CONCEPT According to the Antarctic Treaty (1959) and related international agreements it is intended exclusively for creative activities and scientific research in the interests of all of humanity. Antarctica is the continent that can encourage people to think about the future of humanity and culture and give an opportunity to create new ways of approaching and seeing life on our planet. This white continent resembles a pure sheet of paper, on which artists from different countries might draft new visions for life in the 21st Century.

The Antarctic Biennale has been granted UNESCO's patronage to map out future scenarios for the planet On January 24, 2017, the biennale got UNESCO's patronage in recognition of the project’s engagement with promotion of cultural and scientific exchange.

EXPEDITION 16 – 27 March 2017

The Antarctic Biennale is an international sociocultural phenomenon that incorporates artistic, scientific and philosophical methodologies, creates a supra-national platform for interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue. The Antarctic Biennale departs from standard exhibition models. It is a creative journey, expanding the parameters of what art can be today. The Antarctic Biennale expedition aboard the research vessel begins in March 2017 and will last for twelve days. It involves around a hundred people from all over the world: artists, architects, researchers, and philosophers. The biennale’s onboard program includes artistic and scientific discussions, performances, poetic and philosophical readings, and screenings. All installations created during the expedition will be dismantled and loaded back on ship. Their lives will continue in the world’s most significant museums and art-centres.
