Journal #3

We have now had seven classes together. What have you learned so far? Has anything surprised you or did you know everything to date? Share your thoughts about the last seven classes and how you think these lessons may or may not assist you with your journey as an educator.

I think that these classes have greatly benefited me and will continue to do so long into my teaching career. I have learned what behaviourism is and that constructivism is the style of teaching that has replaced it. Students do not truly learn the knowledge and concepts provided if they are merely passive recipients of whatever knowledge we choose to impart on them. Students must be allowed and encouraged to seek out the information for themselves, and rely on their educators for support and guidance. I was surprised to learn that students that challenge your authority as a teacher in class are paying you a compliment. If they did not feel safe in your classroom environment, they would not feel comfortable enough to challenge you.

Learning about the various intelligences has also given me the confidence that I needed in order to teach a variety of students using various techniques. As a teacher I will take the time to get to know all of my students and find out what their learning style is and what they would like to get out of the class. This class has helped cement my desire to become a teacher and given me the tools to do so. I desperately want to make a difference and I strongly believe that the most effective way of doing so is to educate younger generations so that they do not make the same mistakes that we have made. I just hope that my students will recognize how passionate I am about them and that they will be inspired to try their very best at everything they do. Â
