What Does the Bible Say About Dealing With Difficult People? You may know someone else who has had to deal with difficult people, or you may have experienced dealing with them yourself. As you study the Bible, you find that God lets other people and experiences build character in us. Often, we just want the difficult person to go away and bother someone else. But what if that someone else is you? God wants us to strive for peace. So let's look at some relevant scriptures that show how to deal with difficult people.

What should our motive be when dealing with anyone? Hebrews 12:14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord... Romans 12:18 if it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Regardless of how others treat us, we are to try to have peaceful relationships with them. In the beatitudes, Jesus Christ—the Prince of Peace—said that those who are peacemakers will be called the children of God (Matthew 5:9).

6

What important character trait is needed to deal with difficult people? Philippians 2:3 let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS. MANY SENIORS HAVE GOTTEN TO THEIR GOLDEN YEARS AND MAY JUST FLOW WITH THE STATUS QUO BUT THAT IS NOT RIGHT. IF THERE IS A PROBLEM REGARDLESS OF PERSONAL OR ABOUT YOUR SURROUNDINGS, LIFE INSURANCE, HEALTH INSURANCE ETC…AND YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND IT. PLEASE GO TO YOUR RESIDENT SERVICE COORDINATOR AND THEY WILL CERTAINLY FIND THE ANSWERS NECESSARY TO BRING LIGHT TO YOUR UNANSWERED NEEDS.

Letter from the Editor This marks the fourth issue of Mahalia Jackson Senior Residents Quarterly, a newsmagazine which will publish four times a year. The newsmag will bring you the latest news and information about Vital info, Events, MJA Events, Trips, and Health Policies for Seniors, Skating Parties, Arts & Crafts, and Dancing. We will also include information about memory impairments due to disease, injury, and aging, and current findings on how they can be treated. My purpose for this news-mag is to help you make sense out of what is available to you, new health discoveries etc. For example, our cover on this issue represents our pride in being Mahalia Jackson Senior Apartment Residents and what’s new and has been done at, through and by MJA.

Another example, is something that is near to my heart (because I have experienced this); in the areas of health and it is “Memory Loss”. Because our memory may tend to degrade as we age, such as memory for the names of people we have recently met. Other kinds of memory tend to survive well into old age, such as memory for new faces. Also many of the articles in this news-mag have been written by senior residents of MJA. Of that, I am very proud and commend these writers for taking an active part and interest in their newsmag. If you're interested in participating in our MJA Senior Residents Quarterly; I urge you to send your stories, prayers, information, jokes, comments, suggestions and letters to me; the editor (Marie Johnson), please push them under my door, give them to one of the writers or give them to Mr. Ron Sorrells and I promise to include them (after I edit them) in the next quarterly issue. We hope you find this news-mag informative and entertaining, and we welcome your comments. It is provided free of charge and in the meantime, don't forget that your memory is among your most precious assets. Use it every way you can, and work to make it the best that it can be. For advice on how to get started, check out Memory Tips by texting “Memory Tips” in the Google or Bing search. Sincerely, From Your Editor

SOMEONE YOU SHOULD KNOW By Marie Johnson “MJA well renowned photographer is also Mr. James Kitchen, former GG (Golden Gloves) Boxer from 1962-1964 and holds the title for “Open Division Middleweight Champ” with 30 wins & 4 losses; he is our SPECIAL spotlight in this Fall issue of Mahalia Jackson Senior Residents Quarterly News-mag; of someone you should know.” MJA has a large majority of celebrities who are now seniors and many go unnoticed, so we are taking the time to honor our celebrities. Boxing is a well-known sport that holds a large tradition and history, according to the history experts boxing was invented by the Greeks, in the antique Olympic Games boxers squared off against each other to find out who was the best man. Boxing became popular since this origin and spread worldwide, it took time but actually boxing is the most popular contact sport on the planet. You don’t have to be a boxing expert to enjoy boxing. In 1962 through 1964 Mr. James Kitchen was the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) 160pound champion and even though he mentors through the youth mentorship and is a boxing official for The Illinois Amateur Boxing Association; he still has time for photography. And today, Mr. Kitchen is hailed as the No.1 Boxing photographer. When MJA asked Mr. Kitchen what he was proud of about his boxing career he said “That I have had these experiences and I am able to continue through coordinating the Youth Mentorship of C.Y.O. (Catholic Youth Organization). He has many photos displayed of himself at his home, with Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, Sugar Ray Leonard, George Forman, Tommy “Hitman” Hearns and a variety of boxing legends. Mr. James Kitchen is the photographer of all these photographs. We tip our hats in celebration of Mr. James Kitchen; someone we are proud to know.

SOMEONE YOU SHOULD KNOW Continued‌

The tradition of oral narrative; or the art of storytelling, is something that has been with humanity ever since its origin. These days, storytelling sometimes seems like a dead art. Still, there are significant opportunities for someone who wants to become a professional storyteller and rely on this kind of activity for their livelihood. Regardless of their history or background, professional storytellers can often find a range of venues and opportunities for practicing this age-old trade. An inventor is considered the first person to create a new item or different way of doing something. Inventors are highly original thinkers who tend to look for ways to solve problems and improve on existing ideas to develop a useful item that fills a need. Some have changed the way entire nations of people live. At MJA we have someone who does both; Mr. Richard Palmer Thomas, BS. Richard draws upon fantasy, reality, humor and improvisation and his background in science; to tell stories of social and educational relevance, to audiences of all ages and cultures. He has performed solo and with jazz, modern music ensembles and the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, festivals, theatres, music clubs, schools and libraries in Chicago, Seattle, Philadelphia, Atlanta and New York City. And if that is not enough to make your eyeballs pop; read this! The Choice 'n Consequence Board Game was created by Mr. Richard Palmer Thomas. This is a therapeutic, educational board game designed to help substance abusers and potential abusers pin-point and identify personal problems. And it has been in use at The Veterans Hosp. Bldg.14 and a treatment program, Directed by Dr. Eleanor Harris, PhD. MJA can be proud of their residents because of so many accomplishments and it behooves this news-mag to spot-light these wonderful people. It is

appropriate, suitable; it befits and we salute the residents of Mahalia Jackson Senior Apartments with this column. Congrats!

From the Desk of Ms. Mary Love Reid Mahalia Jackson Senior Apartments Building Council President When I took the oath of office as Mahalia Jackson Senior Apartments (MJA) Building President; there was no doubt in my mind that this would be a challenge, yet a challenge well worth giving my all because I knew, this would be a task that needed GOD’S direction and guidance. My prayers are that GOD will protect everyone in this building from all hurt, harm or/and danger and provide the wisdom, knowledge and understanding, which would allow me to do my very best at helping each resident obtain their needs thereby, making it a pleasure to reside at MJA. And that GOD will protect each of us and our family members as we go and come through MJA front/side and parking lot doors. It is vitally important that every resident knows, there is someone standing up for them in situations where they are not there and in circumstances when an advocate is required and necessary for the best possible outcome. I have always worked at helping others, whether in a large or small capacity. It makes me to know that my life has not been lived in vain. We are all connected as brothers and sisters and should always work together and love one another as we love ourselves. If anyone needs my assistance, please knock on my door or give me a phone call and I will do my best to help you or find the answers you need. 1.

Psalm 121:1-2King James Version (KJV) I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

From the Desk of Ms. Doris Riley Mahalia Jackson Senior Apartments Building Council Vice President

”The Lord is my Light/my salvation, the Lord is the strength of my life, whom shall I fear.” Psalm 27. At the onset of this building council, we knew this position would be a challenge. As we discussed the benefit of a building of this size, having concerned residents as council; could be nothing but successful. And our agenda will always be comfort, better living conditions, safe housing, healthcare info and effectiveness for each MJA resident. The Council polled tenants in order to obtain opinions, grievances and suggestions for change, not only to advocate for the betterment of all residents but to also create a better building council. We also adhere to The Bylaws; which must be practiced when gathering information, during meetings and/or when talking to residents. MJA residents must adhere to these Bylaws as well. There have been a few roadblocks but none that will deter our moving forward. Each roadblock has been a learning experience, which will only make this council more effective. MJA is a family and we will learn to work together as one common denominator, looking forward to common good for all.

The Old Days

By Marie Johnson

A grandpa was telling his young grandson what life was like when he was a boy. "In the winter we’d ice skate on our pond. In the summer we would swim in the pond, and pick berries in the woods. We’d swing on an old tire my dad hung from a tree on a rope. And we had a pony we rode all over the farm." The little boy was amazed, and sat silently for a minute. Finally he said, "Granddad, I should a gotten to know you SOONER!

HEARING BETTER NOW An elderly man was having hearing problems and went to see a specialist. The doctor fitted him with some hearing aids that brought his hearing back to full strength. After a few weeks the man came back to make sure the new equipment was working properly, which it was. The hearing specialist said, “It all seems perfect. Your family should be delighted you can hear everything now.” “Oh no,” the man responded. “I haven’t told any of them. I just sit quietly, listening carefully. I’ve changed my will four times.”

This is our FALL issue of the MJA Quarterly News-Magazine and not many of you have added ANY content to this endeavor.
