BAVARIA SPORT 360

“If someone asked me why I love the new Bavaria 360, the answer is simple. Bavaria has really listened to what people want out of their boats and the new 360 is the result. Offered in a combination of Sports, Hard Top and Coupe guises, the 360 is ideal for boating in the Baltic, the UK or the Mediterranean. Bavaria has always made its boats user friendly, with wide and easily accessible side decks, plenty of storage and easy to clean interior surfaces. Build quality is all that you expect from German engineering and the sea keeping makes longer distance passage making a comfortable reality. The Bavaria 360 offers superb accommodation; she is a boat that is easy to live with and one that you will be proud to own, and at a great price. What’s not to love?” Peter Keats

BAVARIA SPORT 400

“From the first time I saw the new Bavaria Sport 400 at her World Premiere at the Cannes boat show in late 2014, I was convinced she’d be a hit with UK boat buyers. The new range of Bavaria Motorboats represents a major change in philosophy for Bavaria. The new 400 boasts a huge cockpit with versatile seating and sun lounging and huge internal volume with over 2m headroom throughout! The fact that she is available in three different configurations; Sport (Open), Hard Top and Coupe widens her appeal further still. Our stock 400HT, based at our Swanwick Marina office, has caused quite a stir with several boats sold already this year. Powered by twin Volvo Penta D6-400 engines she is capable of a scarcely believable 42 knots with a comfortable cruising speed of 32 knots with ease. I’d be happy to show anyone over her either at our Swanwick head office or at one of the local UK shows or international shows she will be visiting throughout the summer.” Ben Nichols

BAVARIA VISION 42

“The new Vision 42 follows the much anticipated introduction of the all-new Bavaria Vision 46. The second in the new line, Vision 42 made her debut at Cannes and is already a hot-selling model in Europe. This boat follows closely the design, layout and innovative features of the Vision 46. The Vision Series has been designed, from the start, to embody the cruising sailor’s wish list. What is striking about this boat is the attention to detail, and the endless list of thoughtful features – some high-tech, some just common sense – executed simply and elegantly. The unique cockpit design with offset companionway allows for a large port cockpit table that is electrically lowered and convertible to a day/lounging bed – which creates a true living cockpit, not yet seen in the production cruiser class. The Vision’s many unique comfort and handling features combine with elegant interiors, Farr Yacht Design engineering for fast and comfortable passages, and the premium build quality and finish found in all Bavaria Yachts. All combined, this stunning boat is sure to draw attention wherever she drops her hook.” Steve Gunn Issue 3 |

BAVARIA CRUISER 37

“Searching for the perfect family cruiser? One that offers sparkling performance, easy handling and real comfort? Look no further! It’s one of the new generations of Bruce Farr-designed cruisers from Bavaria yachts; The Bavaria Cruiser 37 this is, without question, an extremely goodlooking yacht! Her distinctive clean lines, with a striking sleek windows, uncluttered decks and a powerful fractional rig give her the air of a top quality yacht which is underpinned by some of the best engineering in the industry. She is extremely easy to handle, a sure footed and wellmannered yacht with no vices – this boat offers the cruising family responsive and rewarding sailing but without the temperament of a race boat! Bruce Farr designs excellent sailing yachts and to sail the Bavaria Cruiser 37 is a joy – a real pleasure! Her fantastic styling is by the British super

200 2C

yacht designers Designs Unlimited who have not only given Bavaria a fast track into the best styling but also into a degree of detailing and finish which is not usually found in this price range of cruisers. The Cruiser 37 is available in two-cabin and three-cabin versions. The interior is both light and airy with plenty of ventilation with a choice of great wood finishes. The cockpit is a tour de force with her twin wheels and excellent layout making sailing her so easy – but also when in harbour her enormous drop down bathing platform makes the ideal private beach. It could be that you are looking for a sea-kindly yacht, a stylish yacht or an exceptionally well-engineered yacht, if so the Bavaria Cruiser range offers all of this, and much more, in an extraordinarily well priced package.” Mike Jenning

REVIEW

T

he MINI and the iPhone – two of the most popular products of current times share a common bond – personalisation. MINI claims that there are over 15 million different ways of configuring the specification, making your MINI truly yours. The iPhone, of course, well the sky’s the limit. In the maritime world, the pace of personalisation has been a little slower. Naturally your million pound-a-metre superyacht has always been a blank canvas, but in the realms of the production motor yacht personalisation has typically been about little more than choosing options. Sunseeker’s latest yacht aims to bridge the divide between its higher end (and higher priced) custom superyachts and its production boats. The 86 Yacht, then, is a ‘customisable yacht’. Externally, this sleek but conservative offering is a fine-looking ship. High bulwarks topped with yacht-esque hooped rails encircle

broad decks leading forward to the now de-regeur bow cockpit just ahead of the screens and incorporate an optional fold-down balcony. The flybridge styling features some neat details such as the swept back ‘horns’ that support the trailing edge of the hardtop (carbon fibre to lower the CoG) while large hull windows in Sunseeker’s latest ‘z’ style grace the topsides. But other than the hull colour and a choice of white or black for the hard top, there’s not much for the owner to choose out here. Step aboard via the vast hydraulic bathing platform, however, and choices start coming thick and fast. A door in the glazed transom grants access to a generous twocabin, four-berth crew area however you can lose two of the berths (yet still retain two cabins) in favour of a dinghy garage capable of taking a 3.85 metre RIB. Move up through the large, well-sheltered cockpit and head upstairs and there is yet more to be decided upon.

SUNSEEKER BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN CUSTOM SUPERYACHTS AND PRODUCTION BOATS, SUNSEEKER’S 86 IS THE ULTIMATE CUSTOMISABLE YACHT, SAYS NICK BURNHAM…

Issue 3 |

MAR03_Tech_Sunseeker 68 RM3.indd 15

As you’d expect, there’s a bar, generous dinette and sunpad behind the forward helm, but all the furniture is modular. As a result, you can configure this area however you wish. Want to keep the rear clear for a crane and a jetski? No problem. Prefer more sunbathing? Done. A jacuzzi you’ll never use but that will impress your charter clients? Perfectly configurable. Think of it as a lego set for grown ups! Inside the boat it’s a similar story. Beyond the usual choices of wood and upholstery (the former a classic satin walnut on our test boat although Italian-look ‘Taboo’ bleached white oak is up and coming, while leather finally gives way to fabric) there are a staggering eight different layouts for the upper accommodation level. There are even two positions for the retracting 55-inch TV, or you can have a larger one mounted on the forward saloon bulkhead. Positioning the dining table athwartships at the head of the saloon rather than running it forward alongside the galley has allowed the cook a broader area than the usual corridor of cupboards, in turn granting space in the wheelhouse for a comfy sofa and table, allowing your guests to enjoy the drive. The lower level is accessed via stairs between the galley and saloon leading to a lobby area. Unusually, the master cabin isn’t back against the engine room bulkhead; instead two large en suite guest cabins are aft, the owner’s domain sited toward the centre of the boat. As a result, the gentle hum of generators is completely vanquished two bulkheads away. It’s also further away from the midmounted stabilisers which, whilst commendably quiet in operation being the latest electric CMC system from Italy, still swish the water a little. First world problems, eh? Need more choice? Sunseeker will transpose the master and guest cabins, putting the owner back against the engine room bulkhead in return for more floor acreage. Three, admittedly generous, cabins doesn’t seem enough in a near ninety foot boat, and there is something else missing, too – where’s the central corridor? Both these questions are answered further forward where a second staircase leads from the wheelhouse down to a totally separate VIP guest cabin in the bow. It’s a brilliant

solution as the lack of corridor grants more space for the surprisingly generous bathrooms that grace each cabin, not to mention the walkin wardrobes of the master and VIP guest suites. Engine choices include the MTU 2000 10V 1,622hp diesels giving about 26 knots or larger MTU 12V 2,110hp diesels that ease the top speed past 30. Sunseeker report that customers are seeking economy and range, mainly for convenience. More range equals less downtime, who wants to spend half a day of their charter fuelling up? To that end, Sunseeker have given the 86 Yacht a 1,100 litre fuel capacity – more, even, than the larger 28 Metre. As a result, 10 knots with the smaller engines yields a massive 1,500 miles. Think carefully before going smaller for a lower fuel burn unless you’re committed to low speed cruising however, as at planing speeds the difference is negligible. And if you do most of your cruising at displacement pace the commensurate increase in engine hours per trip throws another curve ball – service requirements suggest that the slightly lower-powered, commercially rated versions also available might be a better bet. After responding so thoroughly to customer demand for lower-powered, long-distance engines, most buyers simply tick the box for the biggest motors anyway. Who said the customer is always right? Having chosen your engines, do you care about how it drives? Interestingly about 35% of owners do, preferring to take the helm themselves rather than employ a skipper, this boat being right on (but not over) the cusp of full crew cruising. And if you count yourself amongst them you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Whilst muted volume levels detach you from the experience at twenty knots, a twist of the wheel instantly re-engages you, the 86 tapping into Sunseeker’s rich sportsboat heritage and responding with real alacrity, banking eagerly into unfeasibly tight turns. Slipping neatly into the gap between owner-operated or crew-run yachts, the 86 Yacht also bridges the divide between production building and custom, offering genuine personalisation at a cool million pounds less than the custom-build Sunseeker 28 Metre Yacht.

“THE 86 YACHT TAPS INTO SUNSEEKER’S RICH SPORTSBOAT HERITAGE, BANKING INTO UNFEASIBLY TIGHT TURNS”

DO YOU HAVE A COMPETENT CREW? ENSURING YOU AND YOUR CREW KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN OUT ON THE WATER IS A MUST, AS THE RYA EXPLAINS…

W

e’ve all been in the situation where a friend – it could even have been yourself – has invited a group of family and friends out for the day, and the person driving the boat has been the only person on board who knows how to do anything on it. The keenest passengers are often happy to muck in with tying and untying fenders, or throwing lines, but usually not without first having been shown how to tie the required knot, for example, and the skipper double checking everything. Picture some of the things you do as skipper when you take a group of non-seafarers out for the day – you have to show them how to put on and inflate lifejackets, emergency procedures, where to stand and not stand when manoeuvring, dangers of coming alongside or picking up a mooring, why things shouldn’t be left unsecured and so on. Wouldn’t it be brilliant to have an extra pair of hands and lookout eyes on board – someone who had a grasp of the basics and who you could encourage to feel like they had an important role to play in ensuring everybody has a safe, enjoyable time when you’re out on the water. In sailing, Competent Crew is one of the most well-established qualifications, giving beginners the essentials to become active crew members rather than just passengers. But in motor cruising no such comparison existed… Until a couple of years ago.

Make sure everyone in your crew knows what to do – don’t just leave it to the skipper

GO ON, START MOTOR CRUISING! In January 2013, the RYA started trialling a motor cruising Competent Crew equivalent at a handful of RYA training centres. This ‘Start Motor Cruising’ course quickly gained popularity, with more and more centres asking to run it. It was embraced as an ideal way to introduce friends or family members to crewing a motorboat, and giving them an understanding of how they can assist the helm. Because kids as young as eight can do the course, whole families can take bits of ownership of a day out on the water, while the way the course is run, it can be done at the same time as Mum, Dad or both are doing their Day Skipper or Helmsman. As Rachel Andrews, the RYA’s Chief Instructor Motor Cruising and Power, explains: “Sometimes it can just be so useful to have someone who knows how to throw ropes on to the pontoon or hook a mooring. Passengers don’t always realise 20 |

The Start Motor Cruising course teaches crew invaluable practical skills

what a helm has on their plate, particularly coming into a marina or mooring up, but they can have such a valuable role to play in basic practical tasks and personal safety.” “Kids especially love getting involved and it is a great early education for them into things to think about on the boat. Many enjoy the responsibility and take their duties seriously while feeling good about being helpful and doing important jobs,” adds Rachel. During the Start Motor Cruising course, which can be one-day as a standalone course or two if accompanying Day Skipper or Helmsman courses, participants get the chance to steer the boat, deploy or observe deployment of the anchor, prepare and throw mooring lines, attach fenders, read GPS, keep a look out and pick up a mooring amongst many other practical skills.

Personal safety, including correctly fitting a lifejacket, and recognising and understanding problems that can occur at sea, including their role in an emergency and how to raise the alarm, are also covered off. As well as families and friends on social motor cruises, the course could also be helpful to people not directly involved in sailing a vessel in the superyacht industry, such as boats stewards and stewardesses for example. Meanwhile, the Sea Cadets have been a big early supporter of the Start Motor Cruising course for youngsters on their 24m training vessels, TS John Jerwood and TS Jack Petchey. MARINA SAFETY crew. A helm may have their Day Skipper or Helmsman qualification but one of the best things about boating is there is almost a limitless landscape to explore. Because it takes longer to get anywhere when travelling under sail, there is an expectation that if you want to go anywhere or do anything further afield for the day, part of the journey is likely to happen in the dark. However motor cruising is different, and similar length trips are possible within daylight hours. Many motor skippers have little night-time cruising experience. People love, for example, taking friends and family out on their boat to watch firework displays around the coast, or air shows and other big coastal and river festivals that go on all over the place during the summer months. But that typically involves a lot of boat traffic heading back to a marina or harbour at the same time after dusk and then manoeuvring in the dark. Lack of experience and confidence in such a situation can either put you off doing it altogether, or create potential safety issues for you, your passengers and the other boats around you. Around 1,200 people take their Day Skipper Motor every year, but very few of those go on to take further courses, as they often perceive the Coastal Skipper qualification, for example, as too advanced for what they want to do. But Day Skipper only introduces what to look out for at night, it doesn’t do the ‘how’. To fill that gap, or provide a stepping-stone to Coastal Skipper, an Advanced Pilotage course has been launched to prepare skippers for more advanced cruising by day and night. Only two days’ long, it opens up a new opportunity for skippers to take their motor

cruising skills further without having to commit to a week’s training. Rachel continues: “We want people to feel comfortable and confident in planning and executing night-time pilotage and entering a harbour and manoeuvring in the dark. It means skippers can use their boats more often and for longer and explore even further afield than they may have been comfortable doing before. Advanced Pilotage takes people through after dark planning and as well as saying this is what it looks like, we then go and find it,” Rachel continues. “Night-time pilotage and manoeuvring can be daunting but there’s nothing to be scared of.” Because of the nature of the course, it lends itself brilliantly to being done over the autumn/winter months, when the days are shorter and dark has descended by mid to late afternoon. It also means people can go into the new season with brand new skills for the entire spring/summer season. The course is also great as a bit of a refresher for people who may have their Day Skipper but that haven’t done much cruising for a while and need a knowledge or confidence top-up. “Everything we do is about trying to encourage people to use their boats more regularly to really be able to take full advantage of the incredible opportunities there are being part of a vibrant boating community,” Rachel concludes. “We hope these new courses will help even more people gain the skills and confidence they need to be able to do the things they want to do as safely and enjoyably as possible for everyone on board.” To find out how you can sign up visit www.rya.org.uk today.

Courses equal confidence and will ultimately help you get more out of boating in the long run

MOVING YOUR BOAT ABROAD

THINKING OF RELOCATING YOUR BOAT TO EUROPE FOR THE SUMMER SEASON? FOLLOW THESE TOP TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE MOVE…

N

ot getting as much use of your boat as you’d like because of the good old British weather? Or perhaps you’re just hankering after a new life abroad with your pride and joy? Whatever your motivation, moving your boat to Europe is now an afforable option. If you want to make your dream into a reality, it’s imperative that you do a recce beforehand. Take a weekend and visit the marina you’re hoping to move to, meet the local team and ask questions. Many berths in Europe are leasehold so it’s absolutely essential to secure somewhere before commencing with the move. The cost of a move can vary from around £6,000 to £10,000 depending on your haulier. It’s a good idea to shop around, especially as you may be able to take advantage of a back load, where your haulier may already be bringing back a boat from your chosen area. For more information, read on for our top tips or for details on the ICC (International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) and having evidence of competency abroad, check out the RYA’s website at www.rya.org.uk.

MARINA’S BIG MOVE Skipper Mark Taylor is an expert at moving boats around the world. So when Marina magazine wanted to move its boat from the UK to Vilamoura in Portugal for the summer, he was our first port of call. We’ll let Mark telll the story from here… “I’ve moved many boats around the world before, but this particular move was a bit more of a challenge because of the short time frame involved. There is no heavy transport allowed on Spanish roads over Easter so the move would have to be done before that, giving us a time frame of about three weeks. “First, we got the transport in place thanks to Anderson Boat Transport in Cornwall (www.andersonsboattransport.com) a company with over 25 years of experience in moving boats throughout the UK and Europe. They said they could help us with the move as long as the boat was ready before the Easter break so we set about getting the other elements in place. “Next we had to organise a lift so the boat could be cleaned and

MARINA TECH Boats are usually loaded nose first but ours was just too high!

TO DO LIST FOR THE UK n BOOK YOUR TRANSPORT

The first thing to do is to book and pay for a transport company to collect the boat. Make sure you get quotes from different hauliers. Also check if you will need a police escort especially if you intend on using narrow roads. Your local constabulary will be able to advise you on this.

n BOOK A CRANE

Book and pay for a crane for loading the boat onto transport in the UK.

n PREPARE THE VESSEL

Make sure that the boat is prepared prior to loading onto the trailer – radar is taken down, lights are carefully removed and everything else on the boat like tea makers, bedding and so on is safe and stowed away.

n ANTI-FOULING

A boat should always be anti-fouled and serviced prior to leaving the UK so she can be easily launched on arrival.

n BOOK A CRANE

Book and pay for a crane for loading the boat onto transport in UK.

Changing the loading direction added about an hour to the schedule

n PAPERWORK P

Make sure your haulier has copies of the boat’s paperwork and everything is in order before she’s taken away.

n OFF-LOADING

Make arrangements for off loading the boat on its arrival at your destination. Your marina manager will be able to assist you with this. Also check that the crane at your destination is working on your arrival day.

n REINSTATEMENT

Arrange for someone experienced to reinstate the radar, lights, aerials on your arrival and power everything back on.

n ARRANGE A MOORING

Arrange for someone to put the boat on her new mooring and set up mooring lines for you. Your skipper will be able to help with this if you’ve hired one to help with the move.

n TELL YOUR INSURER

You must inform your insurance company of the move and the change in location and conditions.

TO DO LIST WHEN YOU’RE ABROAD n SKIPPER COMPETENCY

Has the skipper of the boat got a minimum of an ICC qualification so that they can legally operate the boat in European waters? The RYA have a comprehensive section on this. Visit the website at www.rya.co.uk for more details.

nP PAPERWORK COPIES

Copies of the boat’s paperwork must be left on board the boat in preparation of being boarded by the local coastguard.

n LIFE RAFTS

Is your boat’s life raft and safety equipment up to spec? This is likely to be checked in Europe and must be in place.

n AIR CON

Moving from the UK to Europe will mean warmer temperatures. Does your boat have air conditioning? If not you may want to consider having this fitted retrospectively to suit the new conditions.

n GANG PLANK

Has the boat got a pasarelle (gang plank) for getting on and off the boat at the transom?

n MAPS AND NAVIGATION

Think about getting a new navigation card for the GPS plotter with local information so you can start exploring the new area as soon as possible.

n PAPER CHARTS

You need to get yourself some paper charts for the local area, too, in case your GPS fails as well as a cruising guide for the local area.

n FLAGS

It’s a good idea to fly a courtesy flag of the local country from your radar arch to keep up good local relations.

MARINA TECH serviced before the move. This was done at Plymouth Yacht Haven (www.yachthavens.com/plymouth). We also decided to fuel the boat in the UK as it worked out cheaper to do it that way and the weight doesn’t affect lifting or transport. While the boat was out of the water it made sense to do things such as antifouling, make sure the anodes were changed and the outdrives were painted. We also took this opportunity to get the boat serviced and engineers from Dart Haven Marina carried this out for us, while I stripped the boat for transport, taking off the radar, aerials and the like. As we were on a tight turnaround three engineers made the trip down to make sure the servicing was finished in time – a blessing in disguise seeing as the Brittany Ferry we were catching at Portsmouth had been bought forward by 12 hours! The engineers quickly finished up, then it was time to load the boat onto the transport. Time for the next issue… Boats are usually loaded nose first but ours was an inch and a half too high. Therefore it had to be reversed on to fit, which added about an hour to our loading time.

“THANKFULLY THE TRANSPORT BOARDED THE FERRY AND WAS TAKEN STRAIGHT TO ALBUFEIRA IN PORTGUGAL AS VILAMOURA’S CRANE DOESN’T WORK ON WEEKENDS – AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT TO CHECK IF YOU’RE DOING THIS KIND OF MOVE YOURSELF…” “Finally the boat was secured and the transporters made sure that all the relevant documentation was present before setting off – VAT paid, insurance and so on – and I did a final check of the boat as it went onto the transportation to check there was no damage prior to the move. Then it was off to Portsmouth to catch the ferry… If we could get there on time! “Thankfully the transport boarded the ferry and was taken straight to Albufeira in Portugal as Vilamoura’s crane doesn’t work on weekends – an important element to check if you’re doing this kind of move yourself – and no one wants their boat sat on transport overnight if they can help it. So, in order to get the boat back into the water on the day we wanted, the owners had to arrange a crane at Albufeira first and then we sailed the 25 minutes around to its new home in Vilamoura later that day. I was present at the lift to check no damage had occurred during transit, which it hadn’t, so all was good. “On arrival at Vilamoura we had to show all of our documentation again – passports, insurance, VAT paid and so on – and then spent the afternoon putting the boat back together, replacing fenders, lines, covers and turning the power back on (it’s best to turn power off during transit so you don’t run the risk of a flat battery when you arrive!). Everything like this goes below during a move to prevent theft and protection against bad weather. “The following day was spent on manoeuvring practice, working on the ICC qualification and getting used to our beautiful, new surroundings for the summer.” Read more about the move at www.marinamag.com Issue 3 |

PREMIER’S SWANWICK MARINA MARINA MANAGER ANDY OSMAN REVEALS HOW FAR SWANWICK MARINA HAS COME AND WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2015…

MARINA: What’s your role at Swanwick Marina? AO: I’ve worked for Premier Marinas since 2007 and took on the role of General Manager at Swanwick Marina in March 2014 to guide it through a £5.8million boatyard and dry stack development project. Up until now my main focus has been to manage these changes, with the help of my two Duty Managers. But looking ahead, my role will become a lot more straightforward; managing the day-to-day running and enhancing our services even further. MARINA: What challenges have you faced in the last 12 months? AO: Premier Marinas is not a company that stands still; we continue to invest across all our marinas, with £17 million spent on infrastructure 38 |

projects and upgrades alone this year. Swanwick Marina in particular has benefitted from the investment programme, with an extensive number of improvements made to the site over the last year. This has brought its own challenges, especially when balancing the needs of the building contractors with those of our berth holders. Our berth holders have been incredibly patient throughout this transitional period and I’m looking forward to focusing all my attention on customer service and the berthing side of the business in the coming months. MARINA: What makes Swanwick Marina so special? AO: It has to be its location. Situated on the picturesque River Hamble, with 24-hour access to the cruising grounds of the Solent, our customers are right at the heart of the boating activity. Just off the M27, our 300-berth marina is easily accessible by road and sea and includes Prestige Berthing for boats over 18m. For those who want to stay on dry land, we have extensive shore-side facilities, including a well-stocked chandlery and a busy bar and cafe, The Boat House,

overlooking the prettiest stretch of the river. Swanwick does feel like a new marina, especially with our brand new boatyard, new 80-berth dry stack and the addition of two new luxurious washroom blocks for berth holders; customers can now relax after returning from a day’s sailing and enjoy instant access to experts who will take care of any and all aspects of marine repair – we have over 25 businesses on site providing essential services from maintenance to sales and brokerage. The marina also offers over 370 dedicated car parking spaces for berth holders and we have recently launched a new self-storage facility targeted at berth holders and the local boating community. MARINA: What changes have you seen at Swanwick Marina? AO: What was a family run organisation, Moody’s Boatyard, has steadily grown into a modern commercial business, centred around boating operations. We have a new purpose built boatyard with firstclass equipment and facilities including a new hoist bay; a waiting pontoon, dry stack launch bay; and a brand new dry stack for RIBS and motorboats of between 6m and 11 metres – ideal for those looking for a flexible alternative to marina berthing. Together with a new selfserve fuel bay with a high-speed pump for faster, user-friendly fuelling of large vessels, Swanwick continues to be Premier’s flagship marina.

London Marathon twice and I’m currently training to do a duathlon to combine my two loves and will be doing my first triathlon in two months’ time. When I’m not training on land I am a keen dinghy sailor and hold an RYA Yacht Master’s Certificate. In the past, I have skippered at National, European and World level in a variety of dinghy classes and continue to race at local level, participating in a variety of events including the popular Round the Island race.

berdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is one event you can’t afford to miss this summer. It is one of the UK’s longest running and most successful sporting events, and now stages up to 40 daily races for around 1,000 boats and is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world. The event offers a great mix of competitive sailing and social activities. The 8,500 competitors range from Olympic and worldclass professionals to weekend sailors, attracting competitors from all around the globe. Cowes Week also attracts in excess of 100,000 spectators who come to watch the sailing and enjoy the parties and live entertainment – all contributing to the unique festival atmosphere. 2015 is set to be another exciting year for those planning on visiting this one-of-a-kind event, with yet another jam-packed week. For all those wanting to visit Cowes, it is important to remember the event is free to attend! Cowes will become a hive of activity with plenty to see and do including children’s entertainers, face-painting and the Ferris wheel at Northwood House, this is certainly the day to bring the family.

Cowes Week celebrates the inclusive nature of sailing as a sport as part of the event’s Ladies Day. Throughout the day Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week will be recognising the achievements of women throughout Cowes who have contributed to the event and the sport over the years. The Red Arrows will once again be making an appearance at Cowes Week on Thursday 13th August, a memorable display not to be missed. Friday will see the spectacular fireworks display, a tradition that is viewed by many as an inaugural part of Cowes Week. The best places in town to catch a glimpse are the Cowes Yacht Haven, The Parade and The Green. UKSA, the official charity of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, will be offering ‘Try-Sailing’ in the Cowes Yacht Haven throughout the week to all those wanting to give sailing a go for the first time. And the action doesn’t stop once the sun sets, either! Cowes Week wouldn’t be the same without the legendary ‘après sail’, you’re sure to find something that suits you with live music and bars and a range of daily entertainment shore side. See you there!

“FULFIL YOUR DREAMS RUN AWAY TO SEA”

CELEBRATING THE 46TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS SINGLE-HANDED, NON-STOP JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD, CLIPPER RACE FOUNDER SIR ROBIN KNOX-JOHNSTON TALKS ABOUT THIS YEAR’S EVENT, AND HOW AGE SHOULDN’T GET IN THE WAY OF ENJOYING YOUR RETIREMENT

H

arbouring a dream of leaving everything behind and running away to a life on the ocean waves? You’re in good company. Sir Robin KnoxJohnston, the first person to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world, is challenging older people to do just that. “As long as you think young, you are young,” says the founder and chairman of the Clipper Round the World Race, which turns ordinary people of all ages into seasoned ocean racers – from students to bankers, CEOs to taxi drivers. “And while you think young, you still behave young. Therefore, you keep your body acting young and it’s more supple – so I work on that principle.” “I want to encourage people to think that retirement is when life begins,” continues the

75-year-old sailor who finished third in his class in the transatlantic Route de Rhum in 2014 and vows to take part in the next race in 2018. “You reach 65, get your pension, now what are you going to do? Go out and do something don’t just become a couch potato, go and do something real with your life – look forward to that retirement.” The Clipper 2015-2016 Race Start will happen on 30th August this year, kicking off 8 legs that will lead the teams from the UK to Rio, South Africa, Western Australia, the Whitsundays, China and the west coast of America. Participants need no previous sailing experience to take part in the 40,000 nautical mile race, which is split into 16 individual races and they can choose whether to select individual legs, at around £6,500 each, or

complete the full circumnavigation of the globe, costing just over £45,000. The four levels of training, as one would expect, are extensive – and complusary. Teams compete on 12 identical yachts, each one equipped with a fully qualified skipper to guide to crew around the course. So do they get a lot of applications from older people for The Clipper? “Yes we do. I think the average age last race for the ladies was about 33, men was about 40, but that’s 18 year olds up to 70 year olds,” says Robin. “It’s a lovely cross section of people. I think having that range of experience – experience of life or a job or a skill – brings together an awful lot of what makes a good team. And that team should not be underestimated. These people are pretty competitive when they get going.” “It’s the adventure of a lifetime,” says psychologist and 2015-2016 crew member Sharon Collinge, speaking at the Crew Briefing in London back in January. “I’ve done various challenging things before – I’ve done a few sky dives, I’ve done a few mountain climbs and this just seemed like the next best thing after that.” Operations Manager Issue 3 |

Noel Beavis agrees. “I’ve always wanted to sail and never done anything about it. I saw the posters on the underground and thought ‘I’m going to do probably one of the craziest things that I could do’ which is to learn to sail but race at the same time.” “Every time we meet the new crews and we see their excitement, you realise – this is raw clay we’re going to turn into professional sailors,” adds Sir Robin. “For me, every time that’s exciting. It’s fun. I still get the same buzz out of watching how they turn into good sailors, I always have. We’ve got a new intake and it’s – right, let’s work with you lot! Let’s turn you into good sailors, and that’s what we’ll be doing.” Pretty inspiring stuff. But if you’re still complating the pros and cons and need a little more inspiration before setting sail, Sir Robin has some final words: “The world is full of those who’d hate you to achieve because they’ve done nothing and they’ll try and put you off. If you believe in yourself, do it.”

What has been the hardest part so far? Choosing which legs to take part in. Each leg presents a different challenge, from long ocean trips to coping with high heat with very little wind.

What made you sign up for the Clipper Race? The fact that I can’t sail and that I would learn it as part of my training and the race motivated me.

How does this differ from your day job? I am currently a student studying two A levels, music technology and photography, so this trip will be a big change from what I am currently doing every day. What skills can you bring to the team? I have a positive personality which I hope will keep team moral high. Some quotes used in this feature were taken from an interview with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston by The Huffington Post. To read the full interview go to www.huffingtonpost.co.uk 58 |

MICHAEL BERRY

What advice would you give to others? Do level one so you have a basic understanding of sailing before you start. Sum up your feelings about the race in 3 words Bring it on!

What has been the hardest part so far? The first is that I have never been on a boat before and although I read my pre-course material quite a lot of the nautical language was completely alien to me. The second bit is to negotiate time off from work for the various training sessions. What advice would you give others? I do not think this is for everyone. The lack of privacy, the smells, the competing for weeks on end, the remoteness and the possibility of injury are things that most people do not consider. Sum up your feelings about the race in 3 words I cannot wait.

What made you sign up for the Clipper Race? In the end, the decision came down to one question... “Will you regret not doing it?” My answer was a resounding yes, so I signed up!

What made you sign up for the Clipper Race? Sailing and travelling have always been my passions. I always wanted to combine them

What made you sign up for the Clipper Race? It was the way to fulfil the dream of a lifetime.

What advice would you give to others? My best advice to someone preparing for Level 1 would be to be open minded with everything you do, learn your knots and don’t bother about pyjamas sleeping in clothes is much easier! Everyone on board with you is there for their own journey, so be tolerant and patient, especially when you are feeling exhausted this is their dream too. What did friends and family say? One person said to me “I would love to be able to do something like that, do it for people like me who are not in the position to be able to give a year of their life to follow their dream.”

What has been the hardest part so far My participation was a last minute decision as I was unexpectedly made redundant. There was a hesitation if I should continue in these circumstances and risk our savings. We decided to see it as a once-in-a-lifetime chance and go for it. What are you most looking forward to? Seeing waves as high as buildings, feeling humble as I realise how small we humans are despite our ambitions to control nature. What advice would you give others? Do not wait for adventure, chose it! Sum up your feelings about the race in 3 words Wild, furiously-fast and happy.

Age: 70 Day Job: Retired band teacher Home Country: USA Legs: Round the world

What has been the hardest part so far? Getting used to going from small boat sailing (mainly 22 foot) to BIG BOAT sailing with what I see as GIANT winches, lines, sails and so on. What are you biggest fears about the trip? Being out there with 60 to 80 foot swells, getting seasick and being tossed around. How are you preparing? Racing as much as possible and really concentrating on the sail adjustment, tactics and smooth crew work. What are you most looking forward to? Seeing new places, being with people who have a common goal, learning about myself and others, and of course, the start of it all! What advice would you give others? Just do it. I wish that I had known about this long ago. Issue 3 |

s m a i l l i W n a I 5 MINUTES WITH…

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A WINNER ON THE WATER? MARINA CHATS TO FIVE TIMES WORLD MATCH RACING CHAMPION IAN WILLIAMS TO FIND OUT… MARINA: How did you first get involved in sailing? IW: I got started from a very young age with my parents on their cruiser, so it’s been a part of my life for a very long time. MARINA: What made you go from casual sailor to a competitive one? NO: When I was young, everything I did was competitive! I just had to win at everything that I took part in. I’ve calmed down a bit now but back then it was natural for me that any sport that I played would be on a competitive basis. MARINA: Have you got any advice for anyone looking to follow in your footsteps? IW: I’ve always put a big emphasis on the team right from the start. I’ve been lucky to always have an incredibly strong team around me that has been the key to my success on the WMRT. MARINA: What is your favourite thing about the sport of sailing? IW: I love the fact that you are harnessing the energy from the wind and water and trying to get the most out of it. MARINA: Do you have any unfulfilled ambitions in sailing? IW: Yes – many! Although it was absolutely amazing to become the first skipper to reach five World Match Racing titles with Team GAC Pindar, in the long term I would love to play a part in winning the America’s Cup and bringing it back to the UK.

s MARINA: Give us the highlight of your career so far… IW: I think the first Match Racing World Championship was a real highlight – that felt like a major achievement as no British skipper had even won a medal before me. There was no British example to follow in terms of getting to the top with the lack of facilities we have in the UK, so it was a really great feeling to be first to win the tour.

Ian cites the excitement and pressure of racing as the reason he got into sailing

MARINA: What’s coming up in 2015 for you? IW: In 2015 we will be back out with Team GAC Pindar on the World Match Racing Tour going for another World Title. MARINA: What is it, in your eyes, that sets the World Match Racing Tour apart from the other sailing competitions? IW: There are many things that set it apart; the supplied boats, a different type of boat at each event, the format which means the whole event can turn on a single moment, but for me the biggest thing is that due to the supplied boats and prize money structure, you do not need to be wealthy or have a big sponsor or benefactor to compete which, in professional sailing, is really unusual. It means that the winners are the best team on the day, not necessarily the best funded team who can prepare the best. MARINA: Is there much difference between the Tour when you first started out and now? IW: The introduction of the Tour Card system a few years ago both gave teams a guaranteed entry to each event, but also required them to attend most, if not all, events which has led to the Tour becoming more and more a primary focus for the teams competing on it, which in turn has really raised the level over the years. MARINA: What’s your favourite leg of the WMRT and why? IW: I enjoy the Monsoon Cup the most because that it where the pressure really comes on. The whole thing is on the line there and the whole Tour can be won and lost in a single race. That feeling is why I chose a career in professional sport – the excitement and pressure of having to produce when it really matters.

FAST FACTS WORLD MATCH RACING TOUR

n King Charless II and his brother James Duke of York took part in the first ever Match Racing event in 1660. They raced from Greenwich to Gravesend and back for 100 guineas n Match Racing only involves two boats at the start line n Match Racing carries its own set of rules which often result in close, aggressive sailing where collisions are a common occurrence n Some of the greatest names of the sport have done battle on the Tour, former world champions including Sir Ben Ainslie, Sir Russell Coutts, Ed Baird and Peter Gilmour.

Ian is best known for his success in Match Racing, having won 5 World Championships, 4 National Championships and 3 Youth National Championships in the discipline. He is the only European to hold multiple Match Racing World Titles. He was also the first British sailor to win the world title. Ian is also well known on the professional big boat circuit as an accomplished tactician, having won regattas in many different classes. Shortlisted twice for the ISAF World Sailor of the Year Award and twice for the British YJA Yachtsman of the Year Award you can find out more about Ian at williamssailracing.com

Match Racing involves racing at close quarters with collisions a regular occurrence

MARINA: Which sailors, past or present, have been your inspiration? IW: Russell Coutts was always the benchmark when I was rising up through the Match Racing ranks but now Sir Ben Ainslie is the sailor in the world we look to, to learn how to get it done when it counts. I’m watching his America’s Cup preparations very closely.

Ian celebrates with his GAC Pindar team mates after scooping his fifth WMRT title

MARINA: What does it take to stay competitive? IW: My approach has always been very much to focus on the Team and how we interact on the racecourse. When the Team works well together we are normally very competitive. MARINA: What is your favourite thing about the WMRT? IW: I like the fact that it is purely about the sailing performance, and not how well you can design/prepare the boat which means that at the start of the regatta everybody has an equal chance to win. MARINA: And what’s the worst part? IW: Being away from my family. MARINA: What was it like to win your fifth championship title? IW: It really is a dream come true and something I couldn’t have imagined when I started sailing on the South Coast in the UK. When I decided to take up sailing professionally I dreamt of possibly winning one world title but certainly never thought I’d win five. This really vindicates my decision to choose professional sailing as a career. We’ve worked incredibly well as a team over the year and it really is an honour to sail with them. I’d also like to thank GAC Pindar for all of their support in helping me claim this fifth world title.

MOST BOAT OWNERS WANT THEIR NEW YACHTS WITH A FEW INDIVIDUAL TOUCHES, BUT THE ANCASTA GROUP REALLY WENT ALL OUT WHEN THEY HELPED CUSTOMISE A BENETEAU OCEANIS 48 FOR CHARITY…

A

nyone who loves sailing knows how great it is to be able to share that passion with family and friends, so brokerage network Ancasta was determined to help when approached by Isle of Man-based charity, Sailing for the Disabled. Ancasta is the UK’s largest Beneteau Sail dealer, the charity was on the hunt for a new boat and a Beneteau had made it onto its shortlist. Autumn 2014 saw Pride of Mann III, a brand new Beneteau Oceanis 48, in service for the charity, giving adults and children with a wide range of physical, emotional and mental health conditions, the chance to experience the camaraderie and freedom of sailing. Many of the people that the charity helps have no previous experience of sailing and some have never been on a yacht before. BACK TO THE START We were intrigued by the story behind this very special boat. Heading to PSP Southampton Boat Show with a shopping list of requirements and a precise idea of what they needed, the charity spoke with lots of new boat dealers. It was a conversation with the Ancasta team that led to the charity representatives being introduced 64 |

to Malcolm Hearnden from Hamble Yacht Services Refit and Repair, part of the Ancasta group. Hamble Yacht Services Refit and Repair is a full service boat yard with a reputation built on expertise, skilled workmanship and service, and would be doing the work needed to adapt the boat to the charity’s specific requirements. Being able to speak to someone on the engineering side made a real difference. Malcolm’s enthusiasm and ideas inspired real confidence and the charity decided that the Ancasta group was ideally placed to work with it on the project. The new boat arrived in the UK at the end of July last year and went directly to Hamble Yacht Services Refit and Repair for work, to start making the significant adaptations required. The charity celebrated 30 years in operation in 2014 and the replacement boat project was called Project Pearl as a result. It was decided that the replacement had to be a significant step change from what they could offer with its previous boats, improving access onto the boat – and within it – for those less able, and this meant it needed to be able to take wheelchairs easily.

CUSTOMISATION BEGINS The charity selected the Beneteau Oceanis 48 because it had good access from the transom, which lowered whilst at the same time not losing stern seating. It also had sufficient width between the wheels to accommodate a wheelchair. The large sliding opening to the companionway stairs and the gradient of the stairway itself meant that it was feasible to install a lift. The team at Hamble Yacht Services Refit and Repair were therefore tasked with adding a wheelchair ramp from the transom, installing a sliding cockpit table to allow access through the cockpit with a wheelchair and putting in a motorised lift, allowing a wheelchair user to go down the companionway entrance into the saloon. Pride of Mann III is Sailing for the Disabled’s third proper cruiser and so the charity knew exactly what they needed. Therefore, the process of creating this thoroughly bespoke sailing yacht was a very collaborative one with invaluable input from all sides. Other modifications included the provision of dual engine and bowthruster controls, additional grab handles below deck and the widening of a doorway to one of the heads. Pride of Mann III also has a fully enclosed cockpit cover for the days when the weather is unkind. In terms of electronics, the charity chose Raymarine and was delighted with the support and advice from UK Sales Manager, Harry Heasman. Additional instruments have been installed in the cockpit so that all can see what is going on. The outstanding visibility from the cockpit through the sprayhood, even for those in a wheelchair, was a factor in choosing the Beneteau again because everyone could see what was happening. The charity also benefited from support from Navionics UK, who donated their Platinum system and charts for use in the plotter. WHAT THE USERS SAY David Bridson, one of the charity’s founder members and a wheelchair user, is delighted with the new boat. “It’s amazing to see how the charity has progressed over the years with its boats,” says David. “The new Beneteau provides me with a much easier method of accessing the boat in my chair and the enclosure gives greater comfort in the cockpit whilst still having superb visibility.” After being very well received at the PSP Southampton Boat Show, Pride of Mann III is now in its home port of Douglas on the Isle of Man and a full programme of sailing is underway. The boat has already sparked further interest from the disabled sailing community, and it is hoped that it will provide a fantastic platform for Sailing for the Disabled to share their passion for sailing. “In our 30th anniversary year we were looking for a step change in access for our members with mobility problems,” says Ian McCauley, Sailing for the Disabled Chairman at the time of the project. “What we have achieved is a fantastic improvement, which has already allowed us to take people sailing who we couldn’t get on board our previous boats. We feel rightly proud of our new Pride of Mann.” TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE COMPANIES INVOLVED, VISIT SAILING FOR THE DISABLED AT WWW.SFTD-IOM.COM , ANCASTA AT WWW.ANCASTA.COM AND HAMBLE YACHT SERVICES REFIT AND REPAIR AT WWW.HAMBLEYACHTSERVICES.CO.UK Issue 3 |

n Before you cast off, wait for the weather. Photographs look so much better on a sunny day. The sun can make an ordinary shot look stunning. n Find a nice location, one with a clear background, something free of industrial, manmade structures. If you can’t find anything, use the horizon with a nice clear blue sky. n Keep your camera in a Tupperware pot (if it’s small) or cool box. The latter is watertight, impact resistant and may even float. But don’t blame me if it doesn’t! n Remove anything that could appear in the shot on the boat you’re photographing from, ensigns have a habit of appearing in photographs unexpectedly. n Remember batteries (either spares or to charge them) and spare cards for your camera. n Don’t shoot directly into the sun, you’ll either end up with a very washed-out image or lens flare or both. n Watch out for the horizon, it should always be… horizontal. Boats going up or down hill can look wrong, unless it’s on purpose. n Use a chamois leather to keep your lenses clean and dry. There can be a lot of spray when you’re working on the water. n Take lots of photographs. You can always choose the best and delete the others, it doesn’t cost anymore to take 10 photographs or 1,000 if you’re shooting on digital. n Use a fast shutter speed 1/500th or 1/1000th of a second to freeze the spray. Once you’ve mastered that, try a slow shutter speed to blur the action.  The XSR 48 “This vessel was billed as the £2 million super boat capable of over 80 knots. A slow shutter speed was used to emphasise her speed.”

 Calm at the Needles “This was just when the tide turned during the 2006 Round the Island Race. As Bagpuss says: ‘If the wind doesn’t blow the ship won’t go!’” 68 |

REVIEW

VOYAGEof DISCOVERY FROM COAST TO COAST, MARINA PUTS THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE LAND ROVER FLEET THROUGH ITS PACES

T

he market for premium SUVs has always been a hotly contended one. At the top end, Land Rover’s iconic Range Rover has long ruled the roost, but in the midground the brand hasn’t fared quite so well recently with sales dominated by BMW’s excellent X3 and strong competition from the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60. To stand out in such a talented crowd the new Discovery Sport – Land Rover’s replacement for the outgoing Freelander 2 – needs to offer that little bit more and thankfully it does. Both larger and more luxurious, the Discovery Sport feels more akin to Range Rover models than the old Freelander. The sleek design, borrowing heavily from the Evoque, sets the tone for a new generation of Land Rover Discovery premium SUVs. It shares much of the running gear with the Range Rover Evoque, too, although the addition of all-new multi-link suspension at the rear has increased the afforded more interior space allowing for an extra row of pop-up seats in the boot effectively making the Discovery Sport a seven-seater and giving it a distinct advantage over the competition. Also borrowed from the Evoque is the now a little outdated 2.2 litre diesel, which also saw service in the old Freelander. It’s a solid and strong unit producing a healthy 187bhp and 420nm of torque – enough to drive the 1817kg Discovery Sport to 60mph in just 8.4 seconds if coupled with the excellent nine-speed auto box that was fitted to our test car – it’s just that it’s getting a little long in the tooth now and isn’t the cleanest or most refined engine on offer in this class. Fortunately there is good news on the horizon with the new 2.0 litre Ingenium unit from the new Jaguar XE due to replace the old engine later in 2015. At this point the Discovery Sport will be offered with two engine options – a 178bhp unit that will provide an efficiency improvement to over 53mpg and 139g/km emissions, and a lower tuned version with 148bhp delivering over 57mpg and producing just 129g/km. This lower-powered model will only be available as a five-seater and will become the most efficient vehicle in the Land Rover range. THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE Our two-day road test took us from the Valley of the Rocks on the north coast of Devon (setting of the novel Lorna Doone), through the tight, steep and often-hairpin strewn B-class tracks of Exmoor and Dartmoor into fast, twisty and fun A-roads of Cornwall before

The cavernous boot space on offer is full of nice touches – the rear seats can be lowered electrically from the tailgate. The second row of seats feature tiltand-slide functionality enabling occupants to recline their seats or slide them forward or back by up to 160mm and boasts almost Range Rover standards of legroom.

Design details really set the Discovery Sport apart from the competition. Everywhere you look there are beautiful touches to remind you of the premium nature of the product – illuminated name plates in the door sills, ambient lighting and, on our HSE Luxuryspec test car, stitched leather on the dash and door panels.

The third row of seats provides easy, one-handed access to additional seating for occasional passengers. These rear occupants are not forgotten about, as an optional independent control unit is available allowing them to set their desired temperature and fan speed with row-three air vents positioned midway up the C-pillar.

heading back across the main roads and motorways of Devon to the south coast and our finish at the beach front in Salcombe. The Discovery Sport handled everything thrown at it with consumate ease and a high level of comfort. The chassis is superbly composed, particularly over the rough, broken-up tarmac and gravel that seemed to dominate proceedings in the north, with precise, light steering and an agility that belies its not-insignificant size. Turning in eagerly and handling quick changes of direction with very little body roll – impressively controlled for a such a tall vehicle. The engine never fails to deliver on performance promises with the only occasional issue being a reluctance for the excellent ninespeed auto to kick down early enough when navigating the steep descents and inclines of the valleys around Exmoor – a problem easily circumvented with a quick tap on the manual paddles behind the steering wheel. On faster roads the adaptive-shift system of the auto responds to a more dynamic driving style by holding the lower ratios longer and downshifting more eagerly. For those wishing to have complete control of their driving, a manual six-speed box is also available. Although we stopped short of testing the all-terrain abilities to the full, barring a few gravel tracks, the new car has been engineered from the ground up to maintain the Land Rover heritage and deliver best-in-class, off-road capabilities with short-overhangs, excellent axle articulation, long-travel suspension and the usual raft of driverassistance features such as hill descent control, gradient release control, engine drag torque control (which helps prevent lock-ups under heavy engine braking in slippery conditions) and an intelligent full-time four-wheel-drive system coupled to Land Rover’s excellent Terrain Response which allows the steering, gearbox, centrecoupling, braking and stability systems to be tailored to meet the demands of the terrain including settings for general, grass/gravel/ snow, mud and ruts, and sand. The four-wheel-drive Discovery Sport is capable of scaling incredibly steep gradients of 45 degrees, as much as 14 degrees more than competitors SUVs. It also features an impressive 212mm of ground clearance. The Discovery Sport can wade through water to a class-leading depth of 600mm, invaluable in off-road situations, when encountering flooded roads, or when you need to drop a boat in off the slipway – talking of which, of particular interest to boat owners is the significant 2,200kg towing capacity – great for moving that weekend toy around. PRACTICALITY The Discovery Sport manages a neat trick – it feels far bigger from the inside than it actually is. Make no mistake, this is no super-mini

Beautifully proportioned with a fresh look, yet still distinctly Land Rover, the Discovery Sport is an exercise in carefully considered design detail. The rear C-pillars stop at the window surrounds creating the effect of a floating roof and allowing for a contrasting roof colour, if desired.

74 |

Premium, not precious was the brief to Land Rover designers when it came to the interior. There is an air of robust quality with a solid feel to the controls (much of which is borrowed from the Evoque). Everything falls neatly to hand and the standard spec list will leave you wanting for very little.

and around the narrow lanes during our road test I was continually aware of the dry-stone walls and oncoming vehicles, and yet the gaps always seemed to be larger when squeezing through them. Boot space is generous, offering 981 litres, extending effortlessly to a cavernous 1,698 litres with the rear seats folded (by means of an electrically operated push-button in the boot). The third row of seats folds out of the boot floor providing additional capacity for two more passengers (although they are probably more suited to children if you are planning longer journeys). Talking of seats, the interior of the Discovery Sport is a very nice place to sit, with the dash, switchgear and other controls once again borrowed from the Evoque along with the air of quality and pedigree you would expect to see in one of the Range Rover models, and an added touch of toughness. Our HSE Luxury-spec model boasted a full-leather interior with heated electric seats – a fitting extra for such a premium-quality product. The infotainment system built into the Discovery Sport’s centre console offers easy and intuitive control of everything from audio to mood lighting, via an 8-inch responsive touchscreen. The sat-nav is simple to operate and features excellent 3D mapping. The same screen displays the view from the rear-facing parking camera, which is a very useful feature as rear visibility is restricted when reversing given the elevated seating position and length of the vehicle. Opt for the nine-speed auto and you’re welcomed by a rotary gear selector that rises silently from the centre console when you start the engine. You also get paddleshift controls on the back of the steering wheel offering complete driver control – details such as this just help reinforce the move up-market from the old Freelander. For active owners there is no shortage of accessory sockets available to power those outdoor items with the option to spec up to four 12V powerpoints and six USB charging sockets. MARINA’S OPINION There is no mistaking the improvement the new Discovery Sport brings over the Freelander it replaces. This step forward does, however, come at a price – with the base spec SE six-speed manual starting at £32,395 you might not consider the Discovery Sport a cheaper alternative to the competition (both BMW and Audi’s

base-spec models start below £31,500). Go higher and things look more favourable – our tested HSE Luxury model with the optional automatic gearbox is £42,995, well below the top prices of Audi and BMW (although both competitors offer larger 3.0 litre engines at the upper end of their respective ranges). Throughout our two-day road test the Discovery Sport generated a lot of interest and admiring glances, with several people approaching to ask if this was actually a new Range Rover. One particular gentleman (a current Evoque owner) was so keen to know more he was hanging around the car until we returned just to have a chat – a loyal and knowledgeable life-long Land Rover customer, he agreed the new Discovery Sport was closer to the premium Range Rover models than an addition to the Discovery lineup or replacement to the Freelander 2 – he was seriously considering one to replace his Evoque. With the new 2.0 litre engine on the way to address the emissions and economy questions raised by the old 2.2 litre, the new Discovery Sport could well be the car Land Rover need to take the fight to the European competition.
