here’s nothing I like more at this time of year than planning my next escape to the sun, and right now there’s nowhere I’d rather be than the Caribbean island of St Kitts, thanks to luxury lifestyle guru Dominique Afacan’s introduction to the superyacht haven of Christophe Harbour (page 60). Azure sea lapping sandy beaches, designer cocktails, the chance to eyeball some of the world’s most stylish megayachts, and all under the Caribbean sunshine – what’s not to love? Back to reality though, and thoughts turn to ensuring our beloved boats see out another winter in style, so timely heating system maintenance advice from Peter Collard of Eberspächer is more than welcome (page 34). Follow his advice and give your system the once over before the big freeze hits, and you’ll reap the rewards come spring. Continuing the practical theme, the RYA experts explain how to handle a disabled craft (page 31), and our resident Stig puts the VW Amarok through its paces (page 42). If you’re thinking of buying a new boat in time for the coming season, there’s no better time to check out what’s available, because the London Boat Show takes place from 6-15 January 2017. We’ll be there too, alongside manufacturers from around the world, so do come and say hello. For those of you whose winter highlight is your Club’s festive celebrations, we’ve packed our lifestyle pages with party fashion (page 76), and skin treats that will have you looking your best no matter how long into the night you choose to stay up (page 84) – enjoy!

he innovative new Manhattan 66 is designed to maximise your entertainment options, with its exceptional panoramic hull and saloon windows providing light-drenched living spaces throughout. Its brand-new deep V hull offers signature Sunseeker performance and impeccable seakeeping. The newly configured flybridge also creates the feeling that you are on board a much larger craft and has been designed with both entertaining and relaxation in mind, with extensive seating throughout, large sunbathing areas forward and a well-equipped wet-bar. The sociable layout continues through to the wide bathing platform and transom ‘beach club’ where an optional barbecue, fold-away bench seat and overhead ‘rain- shower’ truly set the Manhattan 66 apart from its peers. The twin-berth crew cabin, with private access through the transom, enjoys a dedicated en suite and ample stowage. Thanks to the galley being situated on the main deck, there is room enough for four spacious cabins below including two large twin cabins, a forward VIP suite and standout full-beam master cabin with its own private stairway access from the saloon; a first for Sunseeker in this size range. Powered by twin MAN 1,000hp/1,200hp engines on shaft drive or Volvo Penta IPS1200, the Manhattan 66 can cruise comfortably at 25 knots or achieve an exhilarating 34 knots at full throttle. The starting price of the Manhattan 66 is £1,479,000 excluding VAT.

Axopar
37
Scheduled for Düsseldorf Boot 2017, the latest yacht to hit the market in Axopar’s highly successful range will be the Axopar 37 Sports Cabin, a new benchmark in affordable island hopping, overnighting and comfortable commuting. With its raked windshield and sleeker appearance, it offers fully enclosable cabin and aft cabin versions alongside the existing open air models, the Axopar 37 Sun Top and T Top. The 37 retains the usual cool looks and distinctive, modular design and is expected to confidently achieve a top speed of over 40kts from twin 350hp outboard engines. The proven twin stepped, deep V, axe bow hull produces a fast, safe, agile and very dry run for up to 10 people.

The new Beneteau Sense 51 had its world premiere at the Paris Boat Show at the beginning of December, and Ancasta will be presenting her big sister, the Sense 57, at London Boat Show 2017. The Sense 51, designed by Berret-Racoupeau and Nauta Yachts follows the same new sleek and elegant lines as the Sense 57. From stern to bow, the Sense 51 is packed with innovative features and offers a different way of living on board. The Sense 51 makes a superb, comfortable blue water cruising boat with very well thought out living spaces. The fold-down swim platform lifts to make the cockpit safe under sail and a semi-rigid opening bimini top can be added, providing shelter from the sun, wind and any rain, extra elements can also be added to close off the cockpit completely if desired. For dining al-fresco,
The appeal? Well, those looking to extend journey times will appreciate the extra weather protection and enhanced sense of safety afforded by the enclosable SC version. Divers or fisherman, for example, will find the full width aft deck a practical and useful space knowing that they can relax away from the elements as and when they want to. Sun worshippers will appreciate the extended sunbathing area, full-width sliding roof and twin sliding doors to create that sociable boating experience usually only offered by much larger boats. Prestige
630
The Prestige 630 makes its UK debut at London Boat Show 2017. The new model is destined to be yet another highly popular motor yacht from the Prestige yard, one of the big players in the luxury motor yacht market. The Prestige 630 features a Garroni designed interior, which is bathed in light, with one level living and the galley aft. Luxurious furnishings in a selection of materials and harmonious colour schemes create a level of interior design usually reserved for larger cruising yachts. Three cabins, all with their own en-suite, mean both the owners and their guests are spoilt in the exceptional accommodation and there is an additional cabin for crew. The galley offers a bar style opening to the cockpit while the huge flybridge provides a superb area to relax or entertain in absolute comfort. Powered by twin Volvo IPS950

Jeanneau
51
Jeanneau have launched the latest in its luxury yachts line with the new, entry-level 51 model. Already nominated as ‘Yacht of the Year’ by the yachting press, this is the most exciting addition to Jeanneau’s range. Like her big sisters, her hull is a Philippe Briand design, and superyacht designer Andrew Winch has taken care of the interior. This talented partnership, in conjunction with the Jeanneau design team, has yet again set the benchmark for combining functionality, fun and style very high. She sails beautifully and has the fantastic electric terrace option, with long seating that goes right the way forward under the spray hood as seen on the 54. When onboard it’s hard to believe that she is only 14 |
51 feet. Below deck the 51 has several layout options, including a utility room that provides space for a full-size washer-dryer and extra fridge, ideal for those longer stays onboard. You can choose between teak and oak finishes; her U-shaped galley with Corian stone counter tops and well thought through fittings and open saloon give the comforts of home, while master cabin forward and VIP aft cabin mean guests and family don’t compromise either. Trafford Yachts’ demonstrator arrives in April 2017. Price starts at £315,000 inc VAT, delivery and commissioning Trafford Yachts +44 (0)1752 600120 traffordyachts.co.uk

Bavaria
C57
Designs for this revolutionary new yacht, Bavaria’s largest sail boat model to date, were unveiled at this year’s Cannes Boat Show. This new flagship yacht is said by Bavaria to mark a new milestone in the history of their company. The C57’s elegant lines, enormous sail plan and its high performance originate from Cossutti Yacht Design in Italy. Maurizio Cossutti and partner Alessandro Ganz are well known for their beautiful and fast sailing yachts. With its distinctive wrap-round windows, the C57 leaves nothing to be desired. The owner’s cabin comes with a king-sized bed, an en-suite bathroom, a separate shower, and plenty of storage space as part of the standard design. The two spacious guest cabins are located in the aft.
With 88 square metres of stylish living space, the Bavaria C57 offers the largest living area in its class, something emphasised by the wide companionway leading below. Matt Attree, Director of Clipper Marine, who are one of Bavaria’s largest dealers, says enthusiastically, “This is just what we have been waiting for: it offers our sail boat customers a whole new dimension in size, finish and style. Delivery will be available for next season’s sailing”.

am-packed with technological innovations, the Rebel 47 from Italian builders Sacsmarine maintains all the qualities of a rib with the bonus of increased and improved living space without compromising on performance and safety. The D-shaped solid tubes are not inflated but made of a state-of-the-art composition of moldable foams and hi-tech anti collision plastics material, sheathed in Neoprene Hypalon. The additional useable beam created by the ‘D’ shaped tubes allows for the wide lateral deck passageways that extend all the way to the bow. The protective gunnels with handrails reduce the sense of exposure and give even the most nervous of guests the confidence to move around on deck, even when cruising at high speed. Once at the front, you and your guests are rewarded with a unique relaxing area including a massive sunbed and two ergonomic chaise-lounges – definitively the most comfortable and exhilarating position aboard. The lower deck boasts generous head height, unique in a rib of this category, and the designers have emphasised this with a luxurious interior finish featuring a contrasting woods of light Rovere and dark Wengé. The elegant and well-designed owner dinette-room boasts a queen-sized bed, and there’s a second double cabin on the stern, a modern bathroom with a rain-shower and a separate heads.

The yacht is equipped with a helicopter and a three-person submarine capable of diving to depths of 300 metres. Both the submarine and helicopter are available at extra cost.
EYOS Expeditions EYOS Expeditions has been designing private superyacht expeditions since 2008, and the company’s founders, Tim Soper and Rob McCallum, have spent decades designing ground-breaking itineraries. here’s probably no-one at Fairline HQ up in Oundle who would tell you that it’s been an easy time these past couple of years. With more owners than you have bought new boats, the company has experienced more than its fair share of highs and lows recently. But with the London Boat Show beckoning in early 2017, there is thankfully now much to cheer about at Fairline. The company is celebrating its 50th year, its new owners seem passionate about the brand and their designers are releasing a whole slew of fresh ideas that seem set to plot a new course for this once-beleaguered craft. Both Alexander Volov and Igor Glyanenko, the new owners of the company, hail from Russia, and acquired the brand for an undisclosed sum. These two long-term UK-based Russian investors are both

highly experienced in managing and developing marine businesses and are expert in the production of high technology products, IT and media services. Both are businessmen who enjoy boating; they know the brand, they’ve got the cash and there are plenty of folk at Fairline who have got the vision to take the whole shooting match to the next level. This global brand will continue to operate from its manufacturing facilities in Oundle, Northamptonshire, and the new bosses have been quick to ensure the continuation of boat production by inviting previous employees to apply for the hundred or so jobs on offer as they became available. This move confirmed their intention to continue with the design, engineering, manufacture and distribution of luxury boats in the 11-24m range. Issue 11 |

The company plans to show their latest craft at the London Boat Show in January 2017, among them the Targa 53GT. Dubbed ‘The Express Cruiser to the World’, it marks the launch of not just a new model but what the company hopes is an entirely new concept, which eliminates the need to compromise when purchasing a boat… Satisfaction, guaranteed Built to order, this new boat offers a level of personalisation that Fairline believes has yet to be met by other boat builders. It claims there will be no such thing as an ‘off the shelf’ model with the Targa 53GT, allowing customers to design and purchase something that is truly their boat. Designer Andrew Pope comments, “The Targa 53GT represents a dramatic step forward in motorboat design; using our design DNA to create a model that perfectly blends
24 |
form and function. The use of smart design principles throughout the boat eliminates the owner’s need to compromise. We want our customers to regret nothing and when choosing this boat, the owner will receive unrivalled flexibility in layout and complete confidence in its construction and features.” Its build is unique too, with four separate mouldings coming together to create a monocoque construction. This procedure, along with the resin infusion process, adds structural strength and rigidity while reducing weight, noise and vibration. On first sight, the exterior lines reflect a dynamic performance potential and are immediately distinctive. Her classic swept stern shape integrates well with the hull lines, creating a functional yet attractive transom, and gives the boat a dynamic look even when at rest. Design features have been used well to create an “in and out” experience: the 53GT has a single-level floor

Marina Review from the cockpit to saloon, with one step up to the companionway to maximise the feeling of space. Large, three-piece patio doors span the full width of the upper deck, the L-shaped cockpit seating boasts a substantial three-person sunpad utilising a moveable backrest, giving ‘open’ style exterior space while still being able to close the doors on any inclement weather. This new model features a glazed retractable hardtop, a key advantage of which is the pneumatic seal, providing a waterproof seal and one-touch movement from closed to open. The windows in the saloon allow light to flood in and provide a stunning 360-degree panoramic experience with an uninterrupted view. Party craft There is an option for a submersible bathing platform, with variable height hydraulic mechanism and a 500kg capacity. The platform holds an integrated ladder for those wanting to swim, which conveniently swings and locks away when not in use. Emphasis has been placed on creating a flexible layout providing owners with the chance to create their perfect boat, hand-built to their specific requirements. This includes the choice of galley up or galley down, providing the customer with class-leading flexibility in layout. Designed to be a sociable boat inside and out, it combines large cockpit seating and sunbathing areas with interior saloon seating to provide a seamless flow of entertaining and relaxation space. A stone inlaid wooden high/low dining table with folding leaves can convert from dining to coffee table, allowing the main saloon seating to serve as a dining or relaxation area. A drinks unit stands next to the starboard sofa and a 40-inch rise and fall flat-screen television is part of the yacht’s standard inventory. Companion seating opposite the twin helm adds to the boat’s sociable and inclusive experience. The helm station is designed to ensure the best visibility for the driver due to a central helm position, and the boat is equipped with Garmin navigational technology. The full-beam mid-ship master cabin boasts what Fairline describes as a king-size bed, but during our test we measured it across to be just 1.5m wide. In the same cabin we liked the feature headboard, mood lighting and large panoramic windows, but felt the sofa was a waste of space which could have been better used by building in a set of drawers for extra storage. Interior materials used throughout are of good quality and include stone worktops and leather-panelled drawers and bed surround. A flush-mounted 32-inch TV, along with a standalone vanity unit with illuminated mirror, are just a couple of examples of the luxurious touches in the master cabin. The master en suite features the option of marble worktops throughout – a first for this builder – and large windows to light the spacious bathroom. In addition to the master cabin, there is a VIP forward double cabin, with the option to convert the double to a scissor berth, and glazing overhead with integrated blinds. A versatile extra cabin is to port, with side-by-side twin beds. The twin cabin features the same attention to detail as the other accommodation, and design touches including a full-length mirror. For additional accommodation, there is the option of a crew cabin aft, but having negotiated the entrance ourselves we can only suggest hiring skinny crew or using the space for when the kids are on board. On the water, the Targa 53GT’s sea-keeping is excellent in all conditions
Boasting that rare combination of both style and substance, the stylish Targa comes well kitted-out too
Design details The galley is visually open to the upper deck, ensuring those enjoying the ambience below decks are always connected to other guests. Owners can choose from three beautiful stone worktop options, and the galley’s contemporary yet practical features include a full-height fridge freezer, induction hobs and soft close drawers. The marble countertops felt very much akin to those of much larger superyachts. Storage options in the galley include large eye-level lockers above the worktop and an under-floor larder. Customers opting for the ‘galley up’ option will gain an additional day head and flexible utility room in place of the galley. Design details are dotted throughout the boat and include feature piping and stitching on the sofas and leather-bound and stitched handrails. Owners can select options for sofa coverings, fabric and leather from four sumptuous interior schemes. Take to the water Under way, we found her sea-keeping to be nothing short of excellent in all conditions, and we would go as far as declaring she is a true boater’s boat. Fairline offers a choice of two shaft-driven engine options from Volvo. Up to 725bhp is available, but we think bigger better suits the handling and performance characteristics of this 15m-plus boat. Fairline claims the 53GT can reach 33 knots in a fully loaded state, including fuel and water, and boasts high capacity fuel tanks for longer range safer cruising, but during our tests we topped out at just under that. Prices start from £840,330.00 including VAT, with the 2x Volvo Penta D11-675 EVC engine option.

jord is known for unique powerboats, and the 42 Open is no different – the vertical bow and a clear visual language make up this outstanding new design from Patrick Banfield. The 12.59m long and 4.27m wide powerboat is both sporty and multifunctional, with a striking hull design and flat deck layout. The large bathing platform can be lowered hydraulically and used for a dinghy or to access the water. The anchor can be raised and hydraulically stowed in the anchor locker on the bow by the push of a button from the dashboard. The new T-Top contains lots of electronics, first and foremost the electrically retractable soft-top bimini, which shadows the rear cockpit area on request. The new Fjord 42 open is powered by two Volvo Penta IPS engines with 370 hp (or optional with 435 hp each), the larger IPS 600 engines accelerating it to 40 knots and more. It’s
an all-round smooth experience with a joystick enabling easy manoeuvring, an efficient IPS Forward Drive and everything controlled via an innovative dashboard that can be equipped with two 16 inch Raymarine displays. The touch screen displays can thereby be operated from all three sport seats. The deck layout offers two large sunbathing areas on the bow and on the stern. The cockpit is a typical Fjord design, with an outdoor kitchen under the T-Top and seating area, which can be converted into another sundeck. At night, the indirect on-deck lights on the ground, behind the hand rails and on the T-Top create a phenomenal atmosphere. Below deck the master cabin enjoys a large island bed, ample shelves and storage space as well as amenities such as TV and a Fusion sound system. A second cabin with twin beds can accommodate more guests on board. Really, what more could you want from your yachting daydreams? Issue 11 |

Considerations for disabled craft in heavy seas
Learning how to handle a vessel in challenging conditions is a core part of any powerboat or RIB driver’s progression. Yet keeping the boat as safe as possible when stopped in the water is critical, explains the Royal Yachting Association…
R
ecognising and knowing how to mitigate the factors that can lead to a boat becoming disabled could prove a lifesaver. No-one would knowingly sit happily bobbing about in a craft in waves – the boat becomes a sitting duck. So how does it happen to experienced boaters? One of the most common reasons for an engine to stall in waves is that the helm has mistimed their route through the waves, perhaps ‘stuffing’ the bow into the back of the next wave. This sudden deceleration can cause a lot of damage to both the crew and the vessel (detaching tubes from the bow of a RIB, for example). However, the immediate effect can be disastrous: the sudden slowing down can lead to the following wave lifting the transom and broaching the boat; bearing in mind that a breaking wave of equal or greater height to the beam of the vessel will capsize it when taken on the beam, this is a dangerous position to find yourself in. The boat ‘taking off’ in the first place could be down to the helm having misread the situation, finding themselves in a position that is much more challenging than expected. It could be that in heading downwind – which is inevitably calmer – the helm has been lured into a false sense of security. They may have been operating at wide open throttle, with no power left in reserve to get out of trouble.
What can cause a vessel to become unstable? A build-up of water in the bilges and on deck, and unable to drain rapidly, can have a devastating effect on stability, as can the movement around a boat of people or heavy objects that have not been safely secured. If any additional weight moves the CoG to the point where the AVS is reached, a vessel is at a great risk of capsize.

Stability awareness When loading kit and passengers onto your boat, think about how to maintain a stable profile in the water. An outboard engine will present a significant weight on the transom, so considering where other essential kit should be stored is important. Think carefully about where to place any heavy equipment in order to try and even out the weight distribution, keeping heavy objects close to deck level. Dangers when stationary Broaching can occur when wave speed exceeds vessel speed. The wave lifts the stern and turns the boat broadside to the waves, increasing the risk of waves coming over the beam. If a boat isn’t moving, any waves, therefore, pose a potential hazard. It is the distance between waves that is most important here in
terms of how much a boat is able to ‘right’ itself before the next wave hits and exacerbates the problem. The ability to clear water rapidly from decks through elephant’s trunks, open transoms, bilge pumps and bailing is essential. However, boat modifications, engine position and human behaviour all have an impact on a boat’s stability. Say, for example, your outboard stalled at sea, perhaps because you took off from a wave and reduced, rather than increased the throttle on landing, allowing water to be forced into the exhaust system and disabling the engine. The engine leg acts like a flagpole in the water, and turns the boat stern into the wind. What would your immediate reaction be? Instinct might see you rush to the back of the boat to figure out why it had stopped. Add in the extra weight from you leaning over the back trying to get to the catch and the boat’s
wave direction
32 |

Marina tech susceptibility to swamping astern is increased. It would then only take a small wave to roll the boat over. Outboard engine shafts vary in length and it is not uncommon for people to buy a new boat but keep the same engine, only to find when the engine is attached the leg does not sit low enough the water and so they cut a bit out of the transom. When the boat is moving ahead, water won’t come in. But once stopped, the lower the transom the higher the risk. Be especially mindful that bathing platforms with doors at the back of the boat can provide an area of vulnerability should they accidentally be left open at sea.
Buoyancy and stability Understanding your boat’s buoyancy and stability is essential in understanding the risks of a given situation. A vessel is stable if it returns to its original position when disturbed by wind or waves, for example. When a boat is at rest, and its centre of buoyancy (CoB) is acting directly through its centre of gravity (CoG), it is stable.
When it heels, the CoG remains the same but the CoB moves. The offset between the two creates a ‘righting force’ or ‘lever’, which returns the vessel upright and maintains stability.
Balancing act Understanding the particular characteristics of the boat you are driving, how it handles, and the basic principles of stability can go a long way in avoiding capsize. So, for example, if you do instinctively rush to the back of the boat to address a stall, and you have passengers onboard, get them to safely move further forwards. If you’re part of a safety team, ensure that some of the crew remain on the opposite side of the boat when someone is being rescued to keep the boat as flat as possible, mitigating the free surface effect of any trapped water. Other key considerations include the importance of trying to keep the boat pointing into the waves to stop it turning broadside to them. In deep water particularly, a sea anchor – which resembles and works like a windsock – deployed from the bow enables the boat to hold head to wind rather than beam on, and may help prevent capsize after an engine failure. If you don’t have a sea anchor, deploying a coil of rope or the boat’s anchor over the bow will also enable the boat to hold head to wind. Before departing always secure loose items, keep heavy items as low as possible and ensure any hatches and unused seacocks are closed. Ensure bilge water is cleared and that pump capacity can cope with rapid water ingress. And, of course, lifesaving appliances should be ready, the grab bag prepared and easily to hand and lifejackets and personal safety gear worn at all times. Get educated An understanding of wave theory and how their height, speed, frequency and energy can be impacted by such factors as wind strength and direction, tide, fetch, submerged obstructions and localised conditions is also helpful in reading the potential severity of a situation should you find yourself in tricky conditions. Powerboat capsizes are thankfully rare, yet they do happen. Being aware of the dangers and how to be proactive in trying to prevent them is all part of safe, enjoyable powerboating. The RYA Powerboat Advanced course is a great way to hone your skills and learn more about operating in challenging conditions, and navigating in the dark. The course is two days including one night navigation exercise. You can find you nearest recognized training centre by visiting the ‘where’s my nearest’ search on rya.org.uk.
However, if the boat heels to the extent that the CoG and CoB move but are in line, there is no righting force, putting the boat at risk of capsize. This is called the angle of vanishing stability (AVS).
Find out more More information on many of the issues around rough water handling and wave theory can be found in the RYA Advanced Powerboat Handbook at rya.org.uk/shop available in paperback or eBook.

Keep warm this winter With winter in full swing, now’s the time to give your heating system a thorough health check. Peter Collard, marine heating systems expert at Eberspächer UK, shares some useful advice
Is it safe to start? Check your heater is actually safe to start – is the exhaust still in one piece? Flexible exhaust systems can get brittle over time and if knocked or disturbed during summer cruising or maintenance, can leak. Check the fuel system for leaks too, and ensure the combustion air pipe hasn’t been crushed. Is it a new boat to you? Check that a vehicle heater exhaust silencer hasn’t been fitted because it’s NOT gas tight or insulated and should never be fitted in a boat. Water coolant If your boat has a water heat system, similar to Eberspächer’s Hydronic range, check your water coolant. Before starting your heater, check the coolant fluid in the system – it’s more important than you may realise. If you neglect antifreeze, corrosion inhibitors can degrade or get used up. Radiators begin to rust internally and you risk the system ‘sludging-up’ and causing major internal damage. In some heaters, antifreeze is also used as a lubricant for the water pump and will stop calcification (limescale). If you are using a long-life coolant, your heating system should be drained down, flushed out, and fresh antifreeze water mix (Eberspächer recommend a 50/50 mix of any glycol-based product) added every five or six years (two to three years for standard antifreeze). Add one or two years if you use de-ionized water too. Never use more than a 50/50 mix or household inhibitors. And never add neat antifreeze into a single pipe header tank, it will just sit there in the tank fooling you into thinking your coolant system looks great. Check fuel If your boat hasn’t had much use over summer, fuel quality can be a concern. Is it old? Is there any sign of diesel bug? Fuel suppliers usually switch from summer diesel to winter diesel during September. Summer diesel is supposed to start waxing from -5°C, but this threshold can deteriorate. So when you need the heater it may fail due to fuel starvation. Ironically, by the time an engineer turns up, the temperature may have risen and the heater may well start first time! Eberspächer doesn’t recommend the use of an inline fuel filter for this reason: the paper element can block with wax just when you need 34 |
the heater most. Rest assured, there is a small metal filter in the back of the fuel pump. If your fuel filter is blocking, cut two inches off your stand pipe or block it off and fit a shorter one. Use an anti-oxidant and fuel stabiliser to keep your fuel good until next summer and never tee into your engine’s fuel system. Start the heater Heaters may not start first time after sitting unused through the summer. The usual cause is trapped fuel in the heater’s copper fuel line, which can react with it and decompose. When copper fuel line is used, it generally has an extremely small bore size, usually 2mm internal diameter. A minute amount of diesel is surrounded by copper and within a few months, the copper can degrade the diesel and it will no longer ignite without compression. After two or three start attempts the heater will have pulled fresh diesel from the tank and you will be greeted by a brief cloud of smoke as the old diesel is burnt off. It’s a good time to check for exhaust and fuel system leaks too! Finally, listen to your heater The sound emanating from the exhaust should be clear, crisp and even: a steady roar; or, if fully silenced: a steady whisper. With the boards up, listen to the intake noise. This should be a steady whine. If you hear the whine changing erratically it can be a good indication that the blower motor won’t last through to springtime. If you’re thinking of fitting a heating system, the rule of thumb is that boats over 50ft may prefer a Hydronic system. Heat output ranges from 2.4kw up to 35kw. Prices for the smallest kit with sevenday timer start at £1,895, with installation costing approximately £522. For smaller boats there are four sizes of air heater, ranging from 2.2kw to 8kw with similar installation costs. Ultimately, this is specialist marine equipment and Eberspächer always advises you have it professionally installed to ensure a safe installation, avoid uneven distribution of heat, provide easier access for maintenance, and increase reliability. Money spent on installation is likely to save you cash in the long term.
Find out more Eberspächer manufacture two different ‘systems’ for boats, both use air and diesel fuel mixed and ignited, within the heater’s internal combustion chamber to create thermal energy. The Airtronic range lends itself to more instant heat requirements by drawing in fresh or recirculated air which is heated and distributed to cabins and rooms via ducts and air outlets. For larger boats, the Hydronic range uses a heat exchanger to transfer its thermal energy to the boat’s own internal water system and provides a more consistent heat output akin to a domestic radiator/ convector based system. Eberspächer will be at the London Boat Show on stand CO73 – do stop for a chat, or visit eberspacher.com.

A
good first assessment of your system’s health is to watch it on startup – if you notice your heater’s exhaust producing grey smoke or white diesel vapour when it’s trying to start, or your heater is taking two or three attempts to start, it’s time for a service. If you live onboard, I recommend having an accredited dealer inspect your heating system every one or two years. For occasional boaters that’s every three to four years. If your heater goes out when trying to start from cold, puffing a big cloud of white smoke across the marina, this can be a sign the flame tube is getting to the end of its life.

A Race Too Far
£7.99 (PB) penguinrandomhouse.co.uk The true story of the tragic round-the-world yacht race – now the subject of The Mercy, starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz – makes for a compelling read. In 1968, the Sunday Times organised the Golden Globe race, a round-the-world yacht race that must be completed single-handed and non-stop. A Race Too Far is the story of how the race unfolded, and how it became a tragedy for many involved. Chris Eakin recreates the drama of the epic race, talking to all those touched by the Golden Globe: the survivors, the widows and the children of those who died. It is a book that both evokes the primary wonder of the adventure itself and reflects on what it has come to mean to both those involved and the rest of us in the 40 years since. Of the nine sailors who started the race only one would complete it. Alone for months on end in the middle of oceans, often with no radio contact, the men suffered violent storms, extreme physical challenges, shipwreck and, for Donald Crowhurst, ultimately mental collapse and suicide.

As well as being great fun and good exercise, they’re ideal as a tender, for doing maintenance along the water line or discovering hidden coastlines that aren’t accessible by foot. The Ride 10ft6in is the world’s most popular inflatable SUP, and its popularity is down to its versatility. It’s designed to float and glide easily on flat water, and it has just the right amount of curve in the plan shape so it rides smoothly and predictably in surf, no matter what kind of rider you are. And it’s 120mm/4.7in thick, which increases stiffness while not affecting ride and performance. Cargo tie-downs complete an iconic package. New for 2016, MSL involves fusing a second layer of hard-wearing polymer to the dropstitch core at the raw material stage, removing hand gluing errors. The high-tech industrial process also saves almost 2kg in weight and makes the boards stiffer at lower pressures. 38 |

MOB Lifesaver
£19.95, moblifesavers.com All lifejackets are fitted with a lifting strop, which in comparison with the size of body in rough seas, is like finding a needle in a haystack… But the MOB Lifesaver is 3m of brightly visible yellow line, spliced into a loop with a triangle at one end. The other end is fitted to the lifting Becket in an automatic life jacket. When the life jacket inflates, Lifesaver floats out onto the water and is much easier and faster for the rescuer onboard to grab with a boathook and secure the casualty to the boat. Once attached to a retrieval rig, Lifesaver is able to lift up to 1.5 tonnes with its HMPE (Dyneema) strengthened line. To fit, simply undo the jacket, find the lifting Becket, and loop Lifesaver through using a strap hitch knot, neatly fold back in on top of the bladder.
From £20, Argos, Wilko, The Range, Robert Dyas Robust and waterproof, the Hercules Flask from Thermos floats in water even when full. The stainless steel interior flask with strong polymer exterior ensures premium heat retention, keeping hot drinks hot for 24 hours and cold drinks cool for a full 24 hours, too.
Coleman Divide+ 700 LED Torch
£49.99, coleman.eu
Did you know that the batteries in standard electric lights lose power over time, even when the light is turned off, because they’re still connected to the electronic circuit? Which means your emergency torch could let you down when you really need it. But with patented Coleman BatteryLock™ technology, residual battery drain is no longer a problem! Coleman’s Divide+ 700 LED Torch features a 700 lumen light output and a beam distance of 330m, plus by twisting the head of the torch you disconnect the circuit and extend battery life when your torch is stowed. land ahoy! Watersports toys are perennially popular with superyacht owners, but specialist Superyacht Tenders and Toys reports an emerging trend for high-adrenaline land-based vehicles
O
n a recent project, Superyacht Tenders and Toys outfitted the toy garage for M/Y Ulysses, a stunning 107m Kleven explorer yacht. As well as JOBE watersports equipment, Seabobs and Scuba Pro diving kit, the team supplied a selection of hand-picked motorcycles including Harley Davidsons and two heavy duty all-terrain utility vehicles. We take a look at the most popular superyacht toys that are pushing this trend forward… Gibbs Quadski Blurring the lines between water and land-based toys, the Gibbs Quadski is a true amphibian. It’s equally agile on land and water. A simple touch of a switch retracts the wheels after entering the water and deploys them again when approaching land. The Quadski can reach speeds of 45mph on both land and water making for an exhilarating ride. Gibbs is the pioneering global leader in High Speed Amphibian technology; the Quadski redefines the idea of freedom, flexibility and fun. Vintage electric bikes These gorgeous bikes combine cutting edge technology with beautiful craftsmanship. Timeless and built to last for generations, these bikes are certain to turn heads whenever you’re in port. Each model draws inspiration from a different era, the Tracker is inspired by World War One era motordrome racers, while the Cruz is a classic California cruiser and the Scrambler recalls a time when ‘adventures and wheelies were all that mattered’. Behind the stylish good looks are state of the art features like Schwalbe tyres woven with KevlarGuard, a bulletstopping, robust material that protects against flats, Shimano Alfine hydraulic disc brakes, and a patent pending aluminium battery box that
disperses heat allowing the high performance system inside to run at lower temperatures, increasing efficiency. Polaris Ranger These hard-working all-terrain utility vehicles are made for off-road fun. Polaris produces the number one sport performance side-byside vehicles in the world. The great ground clearance, smooth ride and impressive handling all mean you can take on any terrain with confidence. Fuelled by relentless innovation and a passion for the ultimate off-road experience, these really are go anywhere, do anything vehicles! KTM bikes KTM bikes are about more than just the bike, as a brand they dominate the off-road motorbike scene, especially in the US, sponsoring highprofile events and riders. This makes their mountain bikes a natural choice for anyone who knows KTM motorbikes and wants to buy into the brand. Designed, engineered and manufactured in Austria, KTM mountain bikes look great and have that wow-factor. Cruise sub Meanwhile under rather than on the water, the Cruise Sub is making an impression. A true-James Bond style piece of kit, the Cruise Sub from U-Boat Worx is a submersible for five or more people. Acrylic spheres at each end of the sub mean that everyone has the same intimate, panoramic experience and the best views of the underwater environment. Rotating thrusters provide very precise and efficient control of the sub in every direction. With a maximum depth of 1,140m, the Cruise Sub takes exploring to a whole other level.

bold title perhaps, but for many people the reason for owning a sports utility vehicle often comes down to entirely practical choices – the need to transport bulky or heavy equipment, the ability to easily throw wet kit in the back after a day on the water, or the towing capacity that SUVs benefit from. While most of the best luxury SUVs on the market offer the ability to do all of the above, there are often compromises – interior storage is soon taken up if you’re needing to move really bulky gear (fenders, ropes and winter covers all have a miraculous ability to become larger when trying to squeeze them in the back of the car with the back seats in place for the kids), and who really wants to damage that perfectly carpeted interior with soaking wet or dirty equipment? The answer to these and many other problems lies in another form of vehicle – one that has long been embraced by our American brethren – the ubiquitous pick-up truck. | 43
29/11/2016 19:08
L200 Barbarian and the Nissan Navara all accounting for the recent popularity boom. And with the growth has come all the competitive improvements you might imagine, with the latest crop of luxury pick-ups gaining advanced technology derived from passenger cars to deliver a considerably more refined, economical and car-like driving experience than we’ve seen in the past. And nowhere is this more noticeable or truer than with the VW Amarok.
Perhaps falling a little short of classleading against the luxury SUV market, the interior of the Amarok certainly sets the benchmark in the competitive pick-up category
When filthy, simply turn the hose on the loadbay area and scrub it clean. The tail gate can support a staggering 250kg too – useful when loading very heavy objects
The market for pick-ups in the US has always been exceptional, with models such as the best-selling Ford F-series, Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram accounting for well over half the 1.2 million pickups sold in America during 2016. In some states, such as Texas, they’re almost considered obligatory. And yet the UK and European markets have been slow to see the benefits. European market pick-ups have historically fallen a long way short of their US cousins – basic and agricultural rather than plush and refined, the humble pick-up was more likely to have be seen full of tools on a building site than gracing your local marina. But times are changing – all of the mainstream manufacturers are now marketing luxury spec models packed with leather and tech, with vehicles such as the Toyota Hilux Invincible, Mitsubishi’s venerable
A closer look Launched six years ago, the Amarok was an immediate success for Volkswagen – the decision to market a more refined, better equipped pick-up was a brave choice, especially given it entered the race sporting just a 2-litre engine against the 2.5-, or even 3-litre variants offered by the competition. And yet the Amarok has never felt weak. Granted, the entry-level Startline and Trendline models with their 138bhp power units are more workhorse than racehorse, but the 180bhp variant in the Atacama spec tested here is a solid performer – helped in no small part by the addition of VW’s 4Motion selectable fourwheel drive transmission driven through an eight-speed automatic gearbox – managing a respectable 0-60 time of just 11.3 seconds. For those customers seeking greater performance though, great news – VW has announced that the 2016 face lifted Amarok will be strengthened by the addition of a 3-litre V6 diesel, boasting power up to 221bhp and a maximum 550nm of torque – further improving the performance, capabilities and refinement of this already great vehicle. And refinement is the key here, with the Atacama spec boasting leather upholstery, built-in sat nav, dual-zone Climatronic air conditioning and myriad styling and comfort accessories to elevate its luxurious level to that of most SUVs Don’t think that illusion is shattered with the driving

Life with an Amarok The four-door, five-seat double cab configuration of many modern pick-ups offers real versatility with ample space in the back seats for adults to travel in comfort. However, cubbyholes and storage bins aside, there is precious little secure luggage capacity unless you elect for a hard tonneau cover like the one fitted to our test vehicle. This £1,500 option transforms the vast 2.5m2 load space (big enough to take a standard Euro pallet sideways), into an enormous lockable boot – sufficient in size for anyone’s family luggage needs. The cover is removable too, should you ever require additional height (it should be noted its addition does cut the maximum payload limit by 45kg). All this load space comes at a price though, and that price is physical size. The Amarok measures a staggering five and a quarter metres in length – longer than a Discovery, indeed longer than any European market SUV that springs to mind – making parking in the supermarket (or even the office) carpark something of an exercise in optimism and cooperation. Fuel consumption is OK, rather than great – probably unsurprising given its weight: 3,170kg puts it heavier than most SUVs too – and performance, while adequate for the type of vehicle and its designed use, is not likely to win you the traffic light grand prix. That all said, the Amarok is not alone in these challenges – all European pick-ups are comparatively large and heavy, but they’re positively featherweight compared to their US kin. Marina’s opinion So should you buy one? Well, if the benefits offered by pick-ups suit your lifestyle requirements and you’re happy to sacrifice a little of the top end SUV luxury in favour of a more rugged, hard-wearing workhorse, then the case for the Amarok is a fairly compelling one. It’s well made, well styled, refined and – let’s be honest – pick-ups are just a little bit cooler than an SUV too.
If you’re a company car user, the case becomes even stronger. There are some useful considerations that make the choice of a pick-up over an MPV, SUV or even a large estate more attractive – being a commercial vehicle, the Amarok enjoys fixed low Benefit-in-Kind company car tax, regardless of CO2 or market price. Businesses can claim back the VAT just as they can with vans, and being a commercial workhorse means realistic two-year (up to 25,000 mile) service intervals are achievable, so the increased fuel costs can be partly offset by reduced servicing. Add to this the payload of one-tonne, perfect for moving a heavy outboard or all the sailing kit you could possibly wish to carry, and the enormous towing weight, and what’s not to love.
Stylish, rugged and cool – the double cab arrangement provides ample space for five adults to travel in comfort
© Volkswagen Press
experience either – with ABS (and off-road ABS), traction control and stability control systems, hill start and hill decent control, parking sensors front and rear, and a well considered and set-up chassis, the Amarok drives just like a normal SUV too. Add to this the usual high standards of Volkswagen build quality and you quickly forget you’re driving a big commercial vehicle with a load capacity of one-tonne.

ituated at Hamworthy in Holes Bay within Poole Harbour, Cobb’s Quay Marina is a firm favourite with both yachtsman and motor cruisers. A berth at the stunning location gives unrivalled access to the world’s second largest natural harbour, with plenty of wildlife and beautiful bays to explore and enjoy, as well as easy access to award-winning sandy beaches including those at Studland, Sandbanks and Bournemouth. Offering year-round racing and sheltered waters, Cobb’s Quay is an excellent base with the Solent lying to the east and easy routes to the likes of the quaint Victorian town of Swanage and the beautiful Worbarrow Bay, which is close to Lulworth. It’s also only a short stretch from Brownsea Island which really is the perfect place to drop your anchor. Spend the day relaxing with a book, kayaking with the kids and friends or just spending time identifying the abundance of fish and wildlife both in the clear waters surrounding and on the Island. From the marina, you can also travel further west which opens up extensive opportunities for weekend cruising to the unspoilt waters of Torbay. ituated south of Valencia on the Costa Blanca, any time is a perfect time to visit the historic port town of Alicante, but it’s an especially easy winter sun run – a short flight from most UK airports on a budget airline and you can soon be enjoying the best of Spain’s hospitality. Winters here are mild and summers are hot but not stifling – Alicante averages around 3,000 hours of sunshine a year; temperatures average 16°C (60°F) in winter and 32°C (89°F) in summer, making it a fabulous year-round destination. Alicante Marina has an interesting and varied range of entertainment for all tastes: cafes, pubs, clubs, restaurants, casino, shops and the most stunning city beach. You’re spoiled with a multitude of options without ever leaving the port. Its 748 berths take boats up to 60 metres, with each mooring complete with water, electricity and satellite TV. The home of the Volvo Ocean Race since 2008,
Alicante will host the first stopover of the 2017-18 season. It will be the fourth time Alicante has opened the action, and the third since the race set up its permanent HQ in the port. If you can tear yourself away from the coast it’s worth exploring Santa Barbara Castle, 166m above sea level on the top of Mount Benacantil, which affords a breathtaking view of Alicante. In it is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, from which you can clearly see the bay of Alicante below. Having just celebrated 20 years in operation, the Marina provides a welcome stop-off or base to explore the wonders of this charming Mediterranean city. As you watch the blue Mediterranean Sea lap Alicante’s sandy beaches, it’s easy to understand why thousands of tourists flock here every year. So sit back with a jug of sangria and a large plate of the local speciality, paella, and enjoy a spot of people watching and boat spotting.

Test the limits of your sailing abilities as part of an extreme race in the stunning surrounds of the Indian Ocean
H
ave you got what it takes to go back to basics? Whether you sail a one-man Laser or a 90-foot catamaran, the chances are you’ll be awash with modern technology, from sat nav and climate control to the latest carbon fibre sails. But if you stripped away this tech, how would you fare with only your sailing skills and the most rudimentary of boats? The Adventurists are offering sailors the chance to answer this question for themselves this coming January in one of the less traditional races on the sailing calendar. The Ngalawa Cup launched in 2015 and, running biannually, races for over 300km off the coast of Tanzania, snaking around the Zanzibar Archipelago. This January sees the fourth race set sail. The race, which involves reaching a series of regular check points on various beaches and islands, looks to test its competitors’ sailing and endurance skills by stripping things back to basics through the use of Ngalawas, traditional fishing boats whose hulls are carved by hand from mango trees with outriggers lashed on. With a double outrigger, which acts as a hydrofoil for stability, and a triangular lateen sail, the boats can sail at speed remarkably close to the wind. The boats require ongoing care and attention to maintain and sail efficiently, and most previous competitors have had to rely on their seamanship and the knowledge and help of local islanders to get the most from their Ngalawas. You’ll race for up to nine days, depending on how fast you are, choosing your own course and sailing during daylight hours only. By night you’ll be roughing it on uninhabited islets, camping on islands with inquisitive locals or staying in an actual bed in a fishing village. The islands are lush and green, surrounded by pristine white sand beaches and teeming coral reefs. As you sail along you could see all kinds of exotic beasts: barracuda, dolphins and manta rays to name but a few. Inland there are monkeys, exotic birds and butterflies. Zanzibar has plenty of beach bars and party spots, but for the most part its attraction is down to having plenty of places that feel remote and wild. Its main exports include Freddie Mercury and spices. If you were looking for a place to stock up on nutmeg, cloves and peppercorns, Zanzibar is your place. Englishman Ryan Horsnail, who is currently sailing around the world on a Catamaran, entered the race last year and admitted: “I’ve spent the last few years sailing, having sailed my own boat from New York to the Caribbean, as well as being involved in a few ocean races, including across the treacherous Southern Ocean, so I felt pretty much

Meet the winners The July edition of the Ngalawa Cup was won by Team 6, Olof and Martin, who set a new record by completing the race in only three and a half days. We caught up with these salty Swedish sailors now they’re safely ashore, beer in hand… Congratulations! How does it feel to be recordbreaking winners? Martin: We didn’t capsize and we didn’t do anything to damage the boat. It feels good having completed the race with everyone is in one piece. We’ve had a great experience so we’re very happy. How did you manage to complete the race in only three and a half days? Martin: I think there were a couple of reasons. The boat was clearly a good one and was really fast. We did a load of maintenance and reinforcements on it before setting off and we were quite diligent taking care of it every evening even while sailing. Then there was the discipline of getting up at 5am every morning so we were ready to race at 6:30 and trying to go as far as we could to use as much of the daylight racing time as possible. And we didn’t make any major mistakes, so we didn’t capsize and we didn’t do anything to damage the boat. Spending a lot of time alone on smaller boats has given us the confidence to know that we can fix things when they go wrong. How did you like the boat? Martin: Much better than expected. They have an amazing design and sail very well. We were doing 7 or 8 knots these last days. I think we were going 14 knots certainly some days. Was it difficult to sail? Olof: Not particularly, I mean it’s all about expectations. We’ve been sailing a bit before and my image of this boat was that it was supposed to be carved out of a log with a stick and a piece of fabric cloth on it and it’s actually a real boat and you can handle it quite well. You can’t tack though and you can only gybe, which makes it trickier. Apart from that it behaved very well. It’s actually stable at high speed, so we were going at about 35 knots.
Your sailing skills will be tested to the max on these incredible craft
You’ll have to make the most of every day if you want to get ahead
prepared for a sailing adventure. It turned out the Ngalawa Cup was like nothing I’d ever done before.” “Reaching the end was an amazing experience and relief. We’d worked so hard to get there, had so many things gone wrong along the way, been sunburnt, exhausted, scared, bruised and battered around, but we’d taken on the challenge and completed it. Just the thought of it puts a smile on my face every time.” Jake Vanags from California, who was on the winning team for last January’s race added: “Sometimes you can’t see the highlight while you’re sleeping in wet clothes on a random beach with no mosquito protection and you have to go swim your boat out before low tide at 2am every night. But three months later, for some unknown, clinically insane reason, there is nothing you’d rather be doing.”
What was the toughest moment for you? Olof: We were heading for an island we were planning to overnight on and it was close to nightfall. We only had one shot to land on the island. If we missed it we would miss the light and be stuck at sea in the dark. We didn’t have a clue what it looked like, if it was a rocky or sandy. It turned out if we had come the wrong side of it we would have probably just crashed into the island. What about your best moment? Olof: Definitely the crossing we did between Dar es Salaam and the island of Zanzibar; it’s a piece of open water with very strong winds. It was just beautiful sailing for hours straight doing 10 knots. That was the highlight of the trip. I wish we could have kept on it for longer. What advice would you give to future Ngalawa competitors? Martin: If you do nothing to the boat it is very unlikely that it will make it in one piece. You need to prepare the boat for the crossing especially as you’re going to push the boat quite far. Everything is readily at hand. Spend a few days buying a couple of hundred metres of rope and tie everything together and be prepared to repair everything on the move.

“When you go on detailed and guided adventures or tours, you know what you’re going to get, so there’s no reason to repeat it again. But when you stand at the edge of your comfort zone cliff, and jump off like this, your highs and lows are entirely unpredictable, and the stories are never the same. And when the rollercoaster is over, you get addicted to that natural high and line up for another ride.” The race isn’t all about hardships though, and offers some of the best sailing in the Indian Ocean atop beautiful clear waters and amazing coral reefs, with camps on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world surrounded by charismatic and friendly people. “The locals, I’m sure, had never had visitors before but they were so kind and even took us into their homes for dinner and to meet their families. We also spent some
time with a Maasai tribe in an abandoned five-star resort and they took great amusement in our attempts to light a fire before promptly relieving us of that duty and getting a roaring blaze in second,” explains Chris Mattock, who competed in 2015. The next race is due to set sail on 30 December 2016 (starting on Zanzibar Island and finishing in Kilwa) and is hoping to attract 25 teams from around the world. An ‘average’ team should be looking to complete the race in nine days, but the gauntlet was thrown down by July’s race winners who managed to do it in a new record of three and a half days. amed for the goddess of wisdom, Voluspa’s sumptuous scented candles have gained cult status and a dedicated celebrity following, including the Kardashians, Demi Moore and Courtney Cox, since their launch in 1999. Every Voluspa fragrance begins with founder Traci Amtsen’s meticulous scent crafting alongside renowned perfumers. testing and re-testing. Voluspa’s candles are poured with a luxurious, extremely clean burning, coconut wax blend, made first by collecting coconuts and then cold pressing the oil out of their rich flesh. That coconut oil is then turned into coconut wax through the process of hydrogenation. The resulting candles have a beautiful creamy white look and feel and hold a high volume of fragrance. They are ecologically sound, sustainable, and pesticide-free. For more information and to buy online visit voluspa.co.uk. Issue 11 |

marina is no surprise. The plot surrounding the natural harbour ticks every developer’s box, and the island itself has the added benefits of soaring hillsides, white sand beaches and a mellow local culture. Darby likens the discovery of the site to finding a four-leaf clover – and even better, he had total freedom when it came to planning and construction. Vitally, he was also able to bring his wisdom as a superyacht owner to the project. After all, who better to understand the needs and desires of the marina’s future customers? Darby is clearly detail-oriented by nature, and very much aware of what it takes to ensure that an owner or a charter guest experience is the best it can be. As he explains, “I think it’s that first-hand knowledge and experience that’s driven my desire to create something specifically for superyachts, but that is also a harbour and shoreside for yachts of all sizes.” Unusually, the natural harbour was built from the groundup as opposed to retrofitting an existing facility, meaning every last detail

olks are always looking for new destinations and off-the-beaten-path experiences, and St Kitts and Nevis is very young as a destination. It still has that old Caribbean feel to it, which is part of her charm.” The words of Buddy Darby, owner of S/Y Andromeda la Dea and the discerning founder of Christophe Harbour, a 250-berth marina complex and residential resort in St Kitts that is quietly making a name for itself among the superyacht set. The US$100m investment in the project was arguably a gamble, given the popularity of existing Caribbean hubs like Antigua and St Barths – but the traffic so far speaks for itself. “We had a recordbreaking year last year,” says Darby, “and we welcomed 200+ yachts to our waters. That’s a 20% year-on-year growth in large yacht traffic for the fourth year running.” If anything, it seems the marina, which accommodates yachts up to 91m, is a complementary addition to the other offerings in the region, opening up the eastern Caribbean to larger yachts. On closer inspection, the growing popularity of this

investment programs of its kind in the world, and purchase of real estate at Christophe Harbour provides eligibility for the program. Unlike the traditional leasehold model, the berths here are freehold, which translates to a deeded title and ownership of a property in perpetuity. And who wouldn’t residency in this two-island nation? Its rich history, culture and sugar industry legacy makes this much more than a sun, sea and sand destination. has been considered and delivered to the highest possible standards. A new private jet terminal brings guests to the marina in less than 15 minutes, and on site, there’s 24/7 security and a new state-of-the-art fuel farm, capable of providing tarmac-to-castoff service in under 30 minutes. For charter boats, this makes Christophe Harbour a no-brainer for starting and ending trips. For owners, there is also a residency advantage when it comes to buying a berth. Looking to the future In the coming months, things are on the up and up. A new Park Hyatt will open this spring within the Christophe Harbour development, overlooking The Narrows – the straight separating the two islands of St Kitts and Nevis. The 134 guest rooms will help to accommodate the new spike in visitor numbers to this previously almost untouched destination, offering rooftop swimming pools, a resort spa and three restaurants. In addition to the marina’s existing facilities, including The Pavilion beach club and SALT Plage beach cafe (named one of the top eight beach cafes in the world by Condé Nast Traveller) – this is a fast-transforming luxury destination. As Buddy admits, “to have 2,500 acres is pretty rare in the Caribbean, and it allows us to control the experience for our guests and deliver something really special.” By the summer, Christophe Harbour’s Customs House will open, the anchor of the marina village and home to the customs and immigration services, a crew lounge, fitness centre, boutiques, cafes and more. A Tom Fazio golf course is scheduled to follow – and then phase two of the marina village will bring yet more activity to this new hub. For Darby, much of the joy lies in creating a new community with enduring potential. He concludes, “Seeing our members coming together and creating new friendships and watching our community come to life; that’s the rewarding part – knowing that you’re creating something lasting.”

longside all the new boats on show on the first day of the 2016 Southampton Boat Show, a very special yacht was being handed over to the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Support from players of the People’s Postcode Lottery has enabled the charity to purchase its first yacht to be located at its base in Largs in Scotland, which opened in early 2013. The new boat, a Beneteau Oceanis 45, will enable the charity to better support young people from the North of England and Scotland in rebuilding their confidence following cancer treatment. The purchase was made possible after the Trust received an additional £200,000 at the People’s Postcode Lottery Charity Gala from players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.
Confidence boost The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust was set up by Dame Ellen MacArthur in 2003, inspired by a life-changing trip sailing with children with cancer, which was organised by a French charity. The Trust takes young people, aged between 8 and 24, sailing to help them regain their confidence on their way to recovery from cancer. Working with every Young Person Principal Treatment Centre in

“Alec found the sailing exciting, and loved it. This was an opportunity to try something new that fitted round his illness. He regained a lot of confidence he had lost. We have seen a glimpse of the boy we had before he was diagnosed.” Mother of Alec, 16

Marina people the country, who deal with around 95% of people in that age range being treated for cancer in the UK, the Trust receives recommendations of those who would benefit the most from a trip with them. The trips offer a gentle introduction to sailing, while encouraging teamwork and fun. The challenge of a new experience helps to build confidence and allows them to regain the independence that might have been lost during long periods of hospitalisation. Having its own new bespoke boat will enable the Trust to expand its offering and improve the experience for young people sailing with it. Custom by design Although at first glance the new boat, which was chosen following advice from Beneteau and the Ancasta Group, boasts the same sleek look and lines of the Beneteau Oceanis range, it has been specially adapted for its role with the charity and will particularly support those with mobility issues resulting from their cancer treatment. Charged with adapting the boat, Hamble Yacht Services Refit and Repair worked with the charity to ensure that the boat perfectly responds to the needs of the young people who will sail her. The Trust supports a number of young people who have suffered from brain tumours and sarcomas, treatment of which affects their coordination and balance, and may result in an amputation, limiting their ability to move around a boat. So the new boat has been fitted with extra handrails to help these new sailors move around her with ease. The primary winches have also been moved forward to give the crew more room to manoeuvre when trimming the sails. Access is made more straightforward by the fact that the stern of the boat lowers to pontoon height, making it easier to embark and disembark from the boat, a feature which attracted the charity to the Beneteau. Inside, the cabins have been configured to give young people more privacy. The addition of split-level bunks separated by innovative fabric screens means that young people sharing a cabin can feel like they have their own space. In the main saloon the large table creates a social area where the crew can get together in the evening for meals

and games. The gently sloping 45-degree companionway makes going down below even easier. Happy customers The charity is delighted with the final result. As well as being used for the four-day sailing trips that the Trust offers, having the new boat expands the Trust’s capacity to offer ‘Day Sails’ for the families of young people who are too ill to join the four-day trips. Dame Ellen expressed the charity’s gratitude at the handover event at Southampton Boat Show: “It’s been a big day for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, it’s a step that wouldn’t have been possible without the massive support from players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, the Ancasta Group and Beneteau, so a huge thank you!” She continued, “A magnificent job really has been done”. After the handover at the Southampton Boat Show the yacht was sailed up to the Trust’s Largs base, where she will join operations ready to start the sailing season in spring 2017. The charity’s base in Scotland has enabled it to drastically increase the number of young people who have sailed with it. Young people from across Northern England and Scotland have been able to take up trips, whereas previously the distance to Trust’s Isle of Wight base might have made this difficult. However, so far the trips from the base have been run using chartered vessels, which has limited the Trust’s flexibility and has an associated ongoing cost. Frank Fletcher, Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Chief Executive explained: “This new yacht will make operations more cost efficient as the number of vessels needing to be chartered will be reduced,” so crucially the charity’s funds will go further. For the moment, the new boat is called the EMCT 2 but she is due to be named by the People’s Postcode Lottery at a launch event next April, which will mark the start of the new season.
The challenges of sailing can help to rebuild confidence and self esteem during the incredibly tough times these young people endure
“We’ve done so much this week that I never thought I would, sailing, barbecues and rib rides! The best bit has being able to meet new people who understand and being able to have some fun! We have all been through the same thing. I have made some great friends. I would definitely come back to The Trust” Rebecca, 16
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust receives no government funding and relies entirely on voluntary donations to provide sailing trips free of charge to the young people that it helps. Find out how you can support the Trust and help to make a real difference to young people’s lives by visiting ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org. Issue 11 |

Defying the Brexit-based economic doom, British brand Chatham has taken a brave step towards reinvigorating the UK’s manufacturing tradition‌

ritish footwear brand Chatham has a great pedigree – founded in 1989 and headquartered in Exeter, the company has been at the forefront of classic deck shoe design for decades. Like many British companies, the product design and development might take place at home, but much of their manufacturing is based abroad. In 2016, however, there was something of a revolution afoot in sunny Devon, as Chatham Chairman Stuart Marsh explained when we met up recently… “I’ve long felt that there’s a resurgence in demand for Britishmade products, not only at home but also in places like China, India and the US, where British tradition and craftsmanship are revered. Chatham is a British company with British values; all our products are designed and developed in Exeter to our exacting standards, so opening the factory to produce a limited run for the Made in Britain line seemed like the logical next step for us. The staff we have here are craftspeople… We have machinery in the factory, but it isn’t automated – every process is carried out by hand but with machine assistance, and I think you can tell when you look at the quality of this range. So much individual care goes into each pair. We have a manufacturing history in the UK – many years ago we made our shoes here, but rising labour prices and the cost of importing materials from oversees didn’t add up financially, so we moved production abroad. Bringing just this small range home felt like the right thing to do, at the right time.” Production values It’s early days in this new venture and the Made in Britain line won’t be going into full production in its first year, but it currently comprises six designs for men including an ankle boot and a heavier duty deck shoe, both perfect for winter. Katie Turner, Product Development Supervisor at Chatham gave us an insight into how having the new range manufactured in Exeter has helped her team: “Having the factory here has been fantastic! The attention to detail and finishing of the product is spot on. Our workforce is so highly skilled that every pair of shoes is made to exacting standards and doesn’t leave the factory until it’s perfect. They’re even hand packed.”
Design innovation But it’s not just the workmanship that sets the Made in Britain brand apart from the crowd. To complement the hand-crafted nature of the shoes, the materials used are of the highest quality too, as Katie explained: “With this collection we were looking to innovate and build on our design history. The sole unit was designed exclusively for the range, specifically to go with the uppers we had in mind. The leathers we’re using are premium – such as the soft Kudu leather [a Kudu is an African antelope] used on the Churchill and Peel shoes in our summer collection – and have a lot of character. We’ve concentrated on the design details to emphasise the hand-made nature of the Made in Britain collection. So, for example, the top eyelets, the heel collar and tongue are in contrasting colours. The stitching is a little more defined, and the colours we’ve used are richer. Having the factory on our doorstep has allowed us to speed up the turnaround of the Made in Britain range, which I think has encourage us to try new things that we might not have risked had we to wait longer to see the physical product.” With plans afoot to build on the initial success of the Made in Britain range, we’re looking forward to more new styles within the men’s range next year. Given the naming tradition, we may need to wait for a few more female prime ministers before Chatham expands into the women’s market though… Watch this space!

Bavaria 34 2001
This has simply got to be the best example of a Bavaria 34 on the market today. She has had her sail drive gaiter replaced and is about to have a full standing rigging replacement. Very highly specified, this yacht has a full Raymarine electronics suite that includes Radar and auto pilot, and a recently replaced spray hood and cockpit tent. She is ashore here in Plymouth and ready to go, having been polished and re-antifoul painted. Below decks, the three double cabins and large heads compartment with shower provide great accommodation for six in real comfort, while the recently re-upholstered saloon with smart grey suede cushions and large 88 |
saloon table make this a great family cruising boat. The well-equipped galley has large refrigerator, gas cooker with oven and grill, pressurised hot and cold water system and plenty of storage. Diesel cabin heating, stereo music system and colour television make her a year-round home-fromhome. Privately owned and maintained on an uncompromising regime by a fastidious owner this simply has to be the best presented and well cared for yacht in her class and early viewing is highly recommended. Hunter Legend 306
This boat is a real little gem. She has come to Trafford Yachts as part exchange on a new boat – her previous owners have taken great care of her and it shows. She has a spacious cockpit with a sugar scoop for ease of access, and is set up with slab reefing mainsail, single line reefing and a furling genoa. Her bilge keel offers fantastic access to shallow water and can dry out, but also boasts great stability and performance. This boat is as comfortable coastal cruising as she is creek crawling. Inside she is again in excellent condition. Finished in timeless classic teak, the well-equipped galley offers ample storage and usability. Her
50 9 , 3 £2
comfortable saloon has the original blue upholstery and she has good sized chart table and navigation station. She offers six berths, two in the saloon and then a double fore peak berth with good storage. There is also a large double berth in the aft and the heads is a good size with a shower. This boat has had a recent survey, has just been anti fouled and is ready for relaunch. You would be hard-pushed to find a finer example of this fantastic all-rounder. Westerly
Storm 33
The Westerly Storm 33 was designed by Ed Dubois and launched at Southampton Boat Show in 1986 to critical acclaim. She really hit the sweet spot, combining great performance, generous accommodation and dashing good looks, and the public snapped them up. Equinox is an early (1987) example which has been lovingly maintained and extensively updated in recent years. Fin keel, slab reefed mainsail, spare jib and mainsail, Spinnaker, Cruising Chute, warm air heating, plotter, tiller pilot, new headlinings and upholstery in 2005, hull repainted in 2005… You’ll struggle to find a better example of the Westerly Storm than Equinox. 90 |

Made in Britain from wonderful tactile, durable and colourful woollen cloth, Hettie’s range of bags and accessories will brighten up your winter
I
t’s a good day when your dog is as stylishly accessorised as you are, and with Hettie’s gorgeous range of bags and dog accessories you’ll both be turning heads… Lovingly created by a family-run design team, all Hettie’s products are manufactured in Britain from the finest British wool. Made in one of the last vertical woollen mills in the country, their fabrics are sustainable, natural and eco-friendly as well as looking absolutely stunning. We love the combination of heritage patterns and contemporary design, which results in products that are timeless but never boring. We’re smitten with this Hettie bag (£135) and Jasper dog coat (£110). Find out more at hettie.co.uk. Issue 11 |
