S
eptember often signals some of the best weather on the water, with late summer days turning into calm, glassy evenings. At this time of year I’m always keen to make the most of dwindling days afloat before winter really kicks in, so I’ll run to the coast whenever I get the opportunity. And I’m not the only one – with our shores and waterways becoming ever more crowded, it’s incredibly important to ensure that all us water users are able to get along, and that’s down in no small part to making sure that we’re all aware of the rules of the water. Luckily, this issue we have a handy reminder from the RYA, so turn to page 31 to refresh your memory on boating etiquette and ensure you’re a pleasure to be around! Other advice this month includes a useful guide to buoyage (page 41), and we were also lucky enough to find out what superyacht designer Philip Briand thinks about the latest trends in yacht design (page 67). This month also heralds the return of the Southampton Boat Show (page 53), now in its 48th year! Among the big names on show at Mayflower Park from 16-25 September this year are Sunseeker, Hanse, Cormate and Haines, all with new models for you to explore (we’ve a round up of many of the new models that’ll be on display on page 12). New on shore is the Festival Stage, which will play host to a line-up of live music and fashion shows that’ll keep the rest of your family entertained. We’ll see you there! .

Manhattan 52
Sunseeker International is delighted to present its smallest flybridge model for over a decade, the new Manhattan 52 at this year’s Southampton Boat Show Stand C080. The Manhattan 52 is devised to maximise entertainment options, light and living space throughout the boat. Cruiser 34
More space, more comfort! A big cockpit with two wheels and a spacious, comfortable layout below deck with three cabins are just two features of the new three-cabin Cruiser 34. Below deck there’s space for six people in three generous cabins. Given that the Cruiser 34 offers an unbelievable space in her boat size, preparing meals in the large L-shaped galley is a pure joy. With two steering wheels the helmsman has optimum visibility. It was important to the yacht’s designers to form the seats ergonomically, so a long day at sea can still be a real pleasure. The cockpit offers a lot of space from the bathing platform through to the companionway. Trimming the sails is an easy operation: the 16 |
main sheet is led on the coach roof and the fore sail is trimmed via winches from the cockpit, all of which is conveniently within reach of the helmsman. Dehler
34
Based on a world championship-winning Dehler yacht, the first genuine performance cruiser ever was created 30 years ago: the Dehler 34. Now she is back – in a ground-breaking and distinctive way. The new Dehler 34 blends speediness with excellent sailing properties in order to find a perfect balance between comfort and performance. Her elegant and dynamic exterior lines also show it is a perfect performance cruiser – representing all the values by which the most demanding sailors recognise a true yacht: velocity, safety, beauty – and German engineering. The new Dehler 34 is as changeable as a chameleon and adapts completely to your wishes. For a family-friendly leisure cruiser with all amenities, select a beautiful teak deck and a large bathing platform for

Review A surprising internal layout sets this mid thirty foot sportscruiser apart from the crowd, discovers nick burnham
2
014 saw the launch of a brand new look for Jeanneau’s Leader range in the shape of the sharp-edged 40 offered in ‘Sportop’ hardtop and open cockpit configurations. The second of this fresh new concept is now with us – the Leader 36. From the outside it looks as though the sum total of design input was to plonk the plans of the Leader 40 into a photocopier, press ‘reduce to seven eighths’ and hit ‘copy’ before retiring for a long lunch to celebrate a job well done, but actually this is a very different boat, nowhere more so than inside. The vast majority of sports cruisers mid thirty feet and beyond offer a two-cabin layout – master forward, mid cabin with a pair of transverse berths aft and a saloon/galley in the centre dividing the two. A quick glance at the plans suggests that this boat is no different, but then you look a little closer and notice that the foot of the forward bed seems to extend over the L–shaped dinette – that can’t be right can it? Once physically on board all becomes clear and in fact, Jeanneau have been very clever indeed. In ‘day’ mode the whole front of the cabin is open plan so as you enter the saloon from deck level you pass the galley to port and generous heads (with separate shower stall) to starboard to find the forward bed on show – a drop down section at the foot of it allowing the whole of the L–shaped dinette to be used. This in itself is nothing new; Regal opt for a similar layout on its 35 Express Coupe, as does Bavaria on its Sport 330. With no fixed forward bulkhead it’s a layout that feels more open plan, offering a greater sense of space albeit at the expense of privacy for those using the forward berth. However the Leader 36 has a very clever trick up its sleeve. At night, a sliding bulkhead transforms everything forward of the galley and heads into a massive forward cabin, taking the dinette with it to

create a master cabin far bigger than you’d achieve with a fixed bulkhead positioned further forward in the boat. It means that the owner benefits from a far larger cabin, but both cabins can access the galley and heads for nocturnal visits without disturbing the other occupants. The only downside is that you can’t used the dinette as a third sleeping area at night, but for most that would be a sacrifice worth making in return for that massively larger fore cabin. And your guests back aft in the mid cabin are hardly short changed. There is masses of space in the lobby area as you enter the cabin, a reasonable level of storage, the ability to infill the two singles to create a double, and even a settee large enough to act as a small third berth – terrific if you have three children and going some way toward making up for that lost converting dinette. In the cockpit the reason for all that headroom at the entrance to the mid cabin becomes clear, Jeanneau have fitted a chaise longue to the forward port side – rather an indulgent feature in a medium sized boat and one that benefits the interior far more than the exterior – a single small seat being the only place to perch underway if you want to keep the helmsman company.

Nick takes the helm and enjoys the ‘Sportop’ option on the Leader 36
Further aft, things improve considerably with a large dinette wrapped around a folding cockpit table. There’s a small sunpad aft that is easily extended by simple dint of folding the dividing dinette backrest forward to create aft facing lounging space, and a useful wet bar takes care of alfresco refreshments. Overhead you can choose between an open boat with a forward canted radar arch or opt for an open backed hardtop that Jeanneau refer to as the ‘Sportop’. Unusually, the latter features a solid sliding roof section rather than the normal concertinaing fabric opening. As a result it doesn’t open as far (it requires a roof section of equal length to retract over) but it is a more weatherproof and durable solution. Michael Peters Yacht Design (based in Florida and with a client list that includes Chris–Craft, Azimut and Cigarette) is responsible for the hull and it’s every bit as good as you’d hope from someone with such an illustrious pedigree. Soft riding and confidence inspiring, it handled the challengingly blustery conditions off Cannes during our test with aplomb. Twin Volvo Penta D4 diesel engines in either 260hp or 300hp guise (there is no single engine option – the only alternative is a pair of Mercruiser V8 petrol engines) provide the motive power. You’ll top 36 knots with the larger D4 motors, but what’s impressive is the ability to back right off to 18 knots yet still stay comfortably on the plane, giving a 26 |
The master cabin is spacious and filled with light
terrific range of cruising speeds from a super economical 20 knots (where you’ll be achieving nearly 2mpg) to a distance shrinking 30 knots plus. Back in port, a huge section of aft cockpit floor lifts electrically to create superb engine access and there’s even a small lazarette beneath the floor just ahead of the engine bay. The finish isn’t quite at Princess yacht levels, but the fit out is good and the price sensible – even after allowing for the inevitably basic spec that turn options into essentials (it’s French, they all do it). Add that cunning interior layout, sharp looks, optional hardtop and offshore capability and you end up with a boat that ought to make the short list of anyone looking for a mid thirty foot sportscruiser.
A clever internal layout turns the L-shaped dinette into another cabin when the boat is in night mode

he all new 78HT Evolution is an exciting and innovative ‘facelift’ evolution of the extremely successful 78 Hardtop and 78 Flybridge models. By applying some subtle aesthetic changes to the original hull, the designers at Numarine have managed to completely revitalise the yachts look while still retaining the existing ‘signature’ design. The vast saloon, awash with natural light thanks to oversized glazing above and around, is complimented by contemporary furniture creating the ultimate entertainment space, with socialising being at the heart of the design. The full width owner’s cabin abounds with style and comfort, and boats plentiful wardrobe space, a walk-in shower, separate head and twin basins. Guest accommodation comprises three very generously appointed en-suite cabins, each outfitted with the finest fixtures and amenities. Outside, emphasis has been given to relaxation space with an ingenious sun-pad configuration on the bow that provides a place in the sun for any number of guests. A forward-facing ultra-wide lounge

seat offers the best view aboard when cruising at speed in absolute comfort and safety. But not all changes are aesthetic: the new 78HT Evolution hides a revolutionary ‘Silent Package’ that utilises a system of lithium-ion batteries along with a smart energy management system and an intelligent multi-stage air conditioning system. In simple terms this allows you to sit at anchor the entire day and run all electrical systems – including air conditioning, audio/video and appliances – with the generator running only for a short charge at midday. The result: complete silence while enjoying the sea. More importantly, after a short charge in the evening before going to bed, you and your guests will be able to sleep in cool, silent cabins. This technical solution, along with the ever improving efforts by Numarine Engineering to reduce all sources of noise, vibration and harshness, has made this 78HT Evolution a new benchmark for comfort on board, both in navigation, with luxury car noise levels, and when moored or anchored. Probably the quietest series-built yacht in its class today, with 66dB in the lower deck area at cruise speeds.

t seems that no matter who you talk to on the water, be they a sailor, an angler, a motor cruiser, a personal watercraft operator or even a kayaker, everyone has a gripe of some kind about another water user. Fishermen complain that yachtsmen use them as rounding marks while they are anchored and fishing. Motor cruisers complain about personal water craft users coming in too close and creating too much noise and wake in quiet anchorages. Yachtsmen complain that power boaters pass them at speed and too close, creating unnecessary wash. And, of course, everyone complains that no-one else knows ‘the rules’…
Mind your manners Take a little time to learn the rules of the road, explains Richard Falk, RYA Director of Training and Qualifications, and remember: a little bit of courtesy goes a long way

On the road Generally speaking, our road system works quite well in that motorists keep a safe and courteous distance apart and the majority of the time, and road users respect one another. The same tends to go for motor bike riders and cyclists. Of course, the situation on our roads is somewhat different. Even though the roads are far more congested and operating at higher speeds, there is clear signage and – even more importantly – lines marked on the road provide drivers with some guidance as to where they should or should not be going.
to the next. A classic example of this is the widely (and incorrectly) held belief that a vessel that is racing has rights over other non-racing water users. This is not the case and has been the cause of many an irate interaction by sailors in crossing situations the world over. Those who know the rules of the road but choose to ignore them or to push the boundaries to their limits do themselves and their fellow boaters no favours. A great example of this would be a sailing vessel tacking up a waterway outside of a shipping channel as a large commercial vessel constrained by draft makes its way up the channel. In reality as long as the sailing vessel remains clear of the
On the water In theory, those on the water should have a much simpler time of it given the lower speeds at which the majority of craft are operating and the significantly smaller volumes of traffic. For some reason, however, many of us still excel at winding up our fellow boaters! For many this comes down to not knowing the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS), while for others it is a case of knowing the rules but simply choosing to ignore them. At best this causes annoyance to others on the water; at worst it risks serious injury or worse. Learning tools Getting to know the rules of the road is not difficult. There are many good books written with useful diagrams and examples of situations in which you are likely to find yourself as a boater, regardless of the type of craft you may favour Be careful, though – there are many urban myths surrounding these rules that seem to get passed from one boating generation 32 |

Marina tech channel it is completely within its rights to be there and there is no harm done. However, if that vessel is sailing right to the very edge of the channel and tacking at the last moment possible, while on an intercepting course with a 40,000 gt ship, the master of the ship has no way of knowing whether the sailing vessel has actually seen them, and so is likely to give the sailors five blasts on the ships horn to ensure they know he is there and that he is unsure of the intentions of the yacht. In short, very few people on the water are blessed with the gift of being able to read minds. Therefore, there are times when taking early and clear actions may well make your life and those of others on the water more peaceful, rather than pressing home your rights when it simply is not necessary. Avoiding increased regulation We are fortunate in this country to still be relatively unburdened in terms of regulation and legislation surrounding leisure boating. A great way of ensuring that situation is maintained is to act in a courteous fashion when afloat. Keeping clear of other craft, operating at speeds that don’t create wash for other craft and generally just being sensible when interacting with other vessels (regardless of what type they may be) goes a long way towards helping everyone enjoy their time on the water a little more. Blood pressures are reduced, tempers controlled and – most importantly – safety is improved. It is much easier to argue against increased regulation when the boating public acts in a responsible and courteous fashion, rather than as a bunch of selfish hoons with no regard for others. So next time you are on the water, think about what you are doing not just in terms of your own safety and enjoyment, but also in terms of how it impacts the other boaters around you. You might just find that you receive a grateful wave as you pass at low speed rather than an angry stream of abuse as you roar past at 25 knots upsetting lunch and throwing people around the cockpit of a boat at anchor. With so many pleasure boaters on the water nowadays, knowledge of the rules of the water are essential if everyone’s to enjoy themselves
Responsible and courteous behaviour on the water will hopefully mean that we can avoid the need for increased regulation
Find out more The RYA offers a wide range of theory and practical courses for all types of boats and craft. Whilst we can’t teach you common courtesy we can ensure you know the rules of the road and the type of behaviour afloat that is likely to keep you safe. From there we hope you can go and put your knowledge and skills to good use with greater confidence on the water. Visit rya.org.uk to find out more.

D
own on the docks in Dorset, Sunseeker International unveiled the first of the eagerly anticipated new 95 Yacht range to selected members of the yachting press on a cold wet blustery day that only Britain calls great. We were there and through the driving rain, we got our first chance to see the new yacht’s exterior. Rushing on board we showed an unusual desire to skip the exterior and began exploring her somewhat innovative layout. She shares the hull mouldings of her successful sister the 28 metre yacht but her interior, 30% larger by volume than her sister, seems to combine a spacious superyacht feel mixed with many more practical advantages of a yacht in this size category. Below deck In its standard layout she features a special master cabin on the main deck that is almost duplex in configuration. The full beam master suite takes full advantage of the side windows and an abundance of mirrored bulkheads to give the feeling of greater amounts of space, while forward, a short staircase leads down to a mid-level dressing area and en-suite that further enhances the superyacht feel of spaciousness. The cleverly designed sleeping area is further enhanced with a small dressing table style desk and a pop-out door to starboard that leads directly from the cabin onto the side deck. There is more sleeping accommodation one deck below and here, on the model we were sea trialling, it is made up of three cabins that are both spacious and well thought out. The option of converting the same space into a four-cabin layout would, we feel, end up feeling small and the initial impact of spaciousness first felt upon boarding would as a consequence be lost. That said, this yacht managed to fit in two twin cabins that could be converted into doubles by sliding the two rather skinny singles together. The third ensuite cabin on this deck was a not-too-shabby VIP where the level of space and comfortable amenities weren’t far short of those in the master suite.
© Sunseeker.com
Main deck Carrying on the split-level concept that began in the master cabin, the raised pilot house offers even more flexibility, contributing as it does to the more expansive main deck layout. This means that the oddly shaped galley/pantry
Issue 10 |

| 37

combination is squeezed into a space that is beside and below the pilot house. Oddly shaped it maybe, but it nevertheless manages to boast its own on deck access door and is well enough laid out to look after the needs of eight guests and four crew. The galley serves a dining table set immediately aft of it and this will be without doubt a most pleasing area to eat in. Drop down bulkheads to starboard give the room a ‘terrace over the sea’ feel. The size of the table and the fact that it lends itself to seating eight reinforces our feeling that this boat is going to be over-crowded if the number of guests exceeds that figure. We might change that view if the boat were not to carry crew and instead be operated by the owner, who would then have the crew spaces aft of the engine room as additional real estate for conversion into guest cabins. Those crew cabins aren’t large, but given that the yacht has to appeal to an audience worldwide it is necessary to show the ability to carry crew. Yet many families will instead, we suspect, use the space as bedrooms for the younger members of the family. The main saloon and the aft deck are bright and spacious and while they are two separate areas act together as the focal point of the boat in warm waters. The décor on these yachts makes use of the builder’s ability to produce wonderfully engineered furniture in-house. Lightweight panels of MDF and marine plywood are cleverly covered in veneers of mahogany and wenge that vary in thickness from 6-18mm. Clever, custombuilt machinery in the factory can both apply the veneer to the thin ends or edges and then a second machine automatically coats those same edges with a high gloss lacquer that is cured within seconds using ultra violet light. The result is a never-wavering supply of well-built, perfectly finished furniture that has that sleek and expensive looking high-gloss quality feel about it. The technical areas While we aren’t fans of the raised pilothouse concept because it tends to make it a somewhat less friendly space when compared to a more conventional wheelhouse, we have to admit that on this yacht, above decks, there is plenty of room for a spacious flybridge that is well equipped with a second helm, bar, optional hot tub and plenty of seating for guests to be entertained in style. Both the upper and lower helm stations are well equipped with the upper one having by far the best view when it comes to confined water handling. Below, there is ample space to handle paper charts, but here again given the yacht’s length and therefore classification regulations that she’ll be obliged to adhere to, it is far more likely that the owner will opt to use electronic charting systems devised for the leisure yachting market and will not need such a large chart table. There are many instances in which Sunseeker has been clever and thought things through from an operational point of view. Much of that can be seen below decks and during the build. For example, this yacht is built with her services and cabling running underneath the decks rather than inside the bulkheads. This allows for more volume to be allocated to the yacht’s beam and, as a result, adds to the feeling of spaciousness. In the engine room a far more flexible method of power generation has been allowed for. This yacht is the first from the builder to carry three smaller generators instead 38 |

Marina Review of two medium-sized versions. On this yacht three, 20 kilowatt Kolhers are controlled to become fully synchronous using a specifically designed automatic power management system All at sea Interior inspection over, and with the continuous rain abating slightly, it was time to take the yacht to sea. Here we would like to report that we were as hugely impressed with her motion as we were with her appearances inside and out. Unfortunately, it seems that in their desire for height and therefore more space the yacht has suffered slightly in regard to her ride. Even with a force two wind speed and seas less than half a metre in height, she seemed to snatch and bounce at all speeds. She has been built using the classic deep V hull with performance at its heart, enabling her to cruise at up to 24 knots or accelerate up to 28 knots, depending on engine option. Yet it was only with the wind astern of the beam that we found the boat to be really comfortable. With the wind aft, she handled well at speed, tucked herself nicely into the turns we threw her into and performed well. In smooth waters of the harbour, she was dream personified reacting well to the slightest of engine command and, using the bow and stern thrusters, seemed to move sideways effortlessly making docking a dream. She is already proving to be a popular boat from a sales point of view and the first six hulls have already been sold. Sean Robertson, Sales Director at Sunseeker International said: “The 95 Yacht is yet another stunning illustration of how striking lines can still be combined with a voluminous interior. Its design has evolved to perfectly emulate the new design direction of our larger models, yet it still remains unmistakeably a Sunseeker. As the second in a series of product launches we have set for this year, this is further evidence of our commitment to invest in developing new exciting models which lead the way in technical and design innovation; providing our customers with the best possible choice within their preferred size range.” The verdict We believe in launching the 95 Yacht Sunseeker have plugged a gap in their model range to produce what will become a worthy successor to the Sunseeker 28 metre. Our verdict is that in designing her, Sunseeker have successfully created a real eye pleaser that will be wonderful in a marina and gloriously at home in a quite sun soaked anchorage with unruffled waters. Just do not add too many rough seas to the mix.

Don’t be blasé about buoyage It never hurts to refresh your memory… There’s a big difference between seeing, understanding and interpreting for a safe passage explains Rachel Andrews, RYA Chief Instructor, Motor Cruising and Power
I
t is a bit of an understatement to say that an understanding of buoyage is pretty important when you are heading out to sea. Even if you are an experienced mariner, it never hurts to refresh your memory, so here is a brief overview of what buoys to look for and what they mean (this is by no means and exhaustive list of all the buoyage you may see out on the water).
Port & Starboard Marks These are the most common marks, marking the outer edge of a channel. They flash red or green to any rhythm (apart from group flashing 2+1, which is reserved for preferred channel marks which may be seen where a channel divides). The light sequence will be marked on the chart for a specific buoy. Lateral marks are laid in the direction of the flood tide. In International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) region A, which incorporates much of the world, including the UK and Europe, red cans mark the port side of the channel, and green cones mark the starboard side. Did you know that in North and South America, and certain parts of South-East Asia, although the shapes of the buoys are consistent, the colour of the lateral marks are the opposite? These areas are part of IALA (B) – just to keep you on your toes! This is something you will need to explore in more detail if you are planning on venturing further afield.

Cardinal Marks These are used to indicate the direction of the safest navigable water from a mark. For example, if you see a South Cardinal ahead, you should stay to the south. The light sequences can be either quick (Q) or very quick (VQ), which allows for two similar nearby marks to be uniquely identified by their lights. Cardinal marks are often seen off headlands, shoals or potentially a change in the direction of buoyage. They are laid to indicate the area of safe water.

Safe Water Mark Sometimes called a ‘Fairway Buoy’ or ‘Sea Buoy’, these are striped vertically red and white, have a single ball on top and flash a single long white flash every 10 seconds. These buoys are usually set in safe, deep water at the seaward end of fairways, or harbour approach channels. They have unobstructed water on all sides. Traditionally, they are the point of departure or, when arriving, the waypoints to aim for, and mark the transition from open water navigation to pilotage.

Direction of buoyage Tip: If you are in any doubt about the direction of buoyage, check the chart for this arrow. Isolated Danger Mark These marks are used to mark a relatively small hazard in the middle of an area of open water. They can be passed on either side, although you should exercise caution when approaching. They can be buoys, beacons, or even concrete pillars but they are always painted with red and black horizontal stripes with two black balls on top. If they are lit it will be with a white light flashing in groups of two. Special Marks These marks have no navigational significance but mark special areas or features such as racecourse areas, swimming or water-skiing zones, anchoring, fish farming, firing ranges and jetties, for example. They are not used to mark a hazard to navigation. Special marks can be all sorts of shapes, but are always yellow and often have a cross as a top mark. If they are lit, it will be with a yellow light. Issue 10 |

Marina’s resident petrol-head and Design guru takes a look at the beautiful Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint
I
t’s long been said that you buy an Alfa Romeo with your heart not your head. Certainly cars of the past had their problems and at times owning an Alfa was akin to having a temperamental Italian mistress – you weren’t sure if she’d wake up grumpy and reluctant or give you a journey to remember. I’ve long been an Alfa-lover. A graphic designer by trade, I’m drawn to the stunning looks and beautiful detailing that sets the brand apart from the mainstream competition, and have previously owned two 156s and recently a 147. All were supremely reliable and problem free, only requiring the kind of regular servicing and maintenance demanded by all modern vehicles. Gorgeous to look at, great to drive and with a style and racing pedigree lacking in rival brands, Alfa Romeo has long-deserved more success than it has enjoyed. Unfortunately a reputation for shoddy build quality, poor electrics and general unreliability born of past models has meant the brand has struggled in recent years to win over customers from its mainstream European rivals. Things are changing though, with models like the Mito and Giulietta enjoying a strong resurgence in Alfa sales – it’s time to take a closer look at what’s changed.

The Giulietta Launched in 2010 as a replacement for the aging 147, the Giulietta is the first of the new-generation to revive a name from the past, last seen on Alfas in the 1950s and ’60s. The silhouette is similar to the old 147 too, with the sculpted bonnet dropping to the trademark shield grille, a confident waistline and distinctive rear styling. Alfa’s trump card has always been its beautiful designs produced by some of Italy’s top automotive design studios, and the Giulietta is no exception. Penned by Alfa’s own in-house design team, and recently facelifted, the Giulietta is achingly gorgeous from every angle and more than holds its own against previous Alfa designs from the likes of Pininfarina and Bertone. The Giulietta Sprint supplied for our review joined the range in 2015 to celebrate the launch of the original Giulietta Sprint coupe in late 1954, and features some unique detailing that sets it apart from other models in the range, with a diffuser-style rear bumper, anthracite-coloured mirrors and five-hole wheel design somewhat
reminiscent of the set that graced my old 156 Veloce. The Sprint also features a 148bhp version of the 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo petrol engine, slotting neatly between the entry level normally aspirated 1.4 and the enthusiastic 170bhp option. A strong and willing performer, the 1.4 MultiAir unit might lack some of the character enjoyed by the old high-revving variable-valvetiming twin-spark engines of the past, but it makes up for it with hugely improved efficiency and emissions – the 6,500rpm ceiling might seem low for an Alfa, but you rarely need to rev it high, with the benefit of increased torque from the turbo at lower revs. The new engine delivers its power through a six-speed manual gearbox with an accurate, slick shift and well chosen ratios, allowing you to keep the little engine nicely in its powerband. Given I was exploring the potential of the engine for the purposes of this test, I struggled to match the official 49.6mpg combined figure quoted, but with more considered use of the throttle I’m sure I could have got closer.

Achingly pretty from every angle – the Giulietta makes its European rivals look dull and unconsidered. A textbook example of the value of great design Efficient, clean and powerful – the turbo-charged 1.4-litre engine features the electro-hydraulically operated MultiAir direct variable valve timing offering more control and increased power and torque over traditional mechanical VVT systems

Marina Wheels
The Giulietta’s chassis is equally impressive – the ride was supple and very well controlled over the less-than-perfect Somerset roads that make up my regular test route. Although I’ve never been a fan of electrically-assisted steering, the system fitted to the Giulietta is nicely weighted and highly accurate, if a little lacking in feedback. It also benefits from Alfa’s DNA switch (Dynamic, Natural, All Weather) – a system that allows on-the-fly changes to the steering weight, traction control, throttle response and setup of the standard-fit Q2 electronic differential. In Dynamic mode, with its sharper throttle response, the steering weight is a little too high for normal conditions, but suits more enthusiastic driving on twisty roads where the Q2 differential helps tighten the cars line through faster tight corners, delivering ample grip and predictable limits. You can certainly feel the system working to help you when pressing on. Natural mode, with its light steering and soft throttle, is much better suited to slower traffic town driving where the sharp throttle response of Dynamic can become twitchy and tedious. A look inside Alfa have always produced beautifully designed interiors and the Giulietta is no exception – offering a remarkably similar driving position to the old 147. Controls fall perfectly to hand with deeply set clocks dominating the drivers view and clean, simple and considered
controls for the climate and infotainment systems. The upgraded UConnect system fitted to our review Sprint includes a 6.5in touchscreen with 3D satellite navigation and voice control – a highly developed infotainment package that has received much praise in the motoring community. The supportive front sports seats, trimmed in Alcantara and cloth, and featuring unique Sprint embroidered badges, are supremely comfortable, even on longer journeys. Rear passengers don’t fare quite so well, with less leg room available than much of the competition. The boot’s a decent size though, with split folding rear seats to increase the available carrying capacity. Higher quality materials, and a better fit and finish, have elevated more recent Alfa interiors to the standards enjoyed by their premium European rivals – overall it’s a lovely driver-focussed place to sit. Marina’s Opinion With modern cars becoming increasingly clinical, it’s nice to see Alfa Romeo sticking to their roots. Yes, the dealer network in the UK is a little thin; yes, it has its quirks and yes, there might be better allround options from some of the competition, but none with passion, style and dynamics offered by the Giulietta. You can’t consider yourself a true petrol-head unless you’ve owned an Alfa, but maybe the time has come where you can finally choose to buy one with your head as well as your heart. The face-lifted Giulietta retains the distinctive Alfa look, with the off-set numberplate shield grille and heavily sculpted bodylines

ometimes the ordinary just won’t do, and there are times when you need to step out of your comfort zone and try something a little more, well, stimulating… So next time you’re thinking about escaping the mundane British climate, instead of jetting off to the sun, why not consider a luxury charter somewhere altogether more chilled – like Antarctica? EYOS Expeditions’ founders Tim Soper and Rob McCallum have spent decades designing ground-breaking itineraries, and they routinely take clients to destinations rarely or never before visited by private yachts. Like Antarctica, South Georgia and the rugged shorelines of Svalbard, only 600 miles from the Arctic Circle. Whether it’s close encounters with incredible wildlife, breathtaking scenery or the awe-inspiring sight of your majestic charter yacht navigating ice floes, these alternative cruises are experiences you’ll never forget. Your journey will take in fjords and remote islands, with landings taking in wildlife colonies, historical sites and research stations. In South Georgia, vast colonies of the colourful king penguin, not seen on the Antarctic continent itself, crowd the beach. Thousands of enormous elephant seals jostle and fight, and albatross soar above. Explore former whaling communities, and learn about the epic tale of human endurance when visiting the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton. In Svalbard, you can cruise deep into the pack ice with the hope of sighting polar bears; you’ll take to Zodiacs to find walrus on ice flows or to land on remote islands;

and you’ll kayak in hidden coves. Cruise spectacular fjords strewn with icebergs, and marvel at glaciers that tumble down to the sea against a backdrop of jagged mountains. In the Antarctic, if conditions allow, you might even cross the Antarctic Circle. A competent, capable and attentive crew take care of your every whim on board, while the expeditions themselves are led by experienced and fascinating leaders. These include Martin Enckell – an experienced and accomplished diver who has stood at the Geographical North Pole seven times, spent well over a year in the Drake Passage, endured (and enjoyed) ten seasons in both the Arctic and Antarctic and crossed the Arctic and Antarctic Circles several times –

Recently unveiled after a $100m restoration, Bermuda’s iconic Hamilton Princess & Beach Club is primed and ready to be the official home of the 35th America’s Cup in 2017. Marina visited to find out more…
trip to Bermuda is never going to be a dull experience, but the sight of the infamous brightly coloured walls of Hamilton’s ‘Pink Palace’ is something that instantly lifts your spirits. First opened in 1885, this grand hotel is one of the largest in Bermuda and was popular with over-wintering Victorians, who came to enjoy the island’s tranquillity and fabulous weather. Nowadays, the weather is obviously still fabulous (Hamilton has a warm, subtropical climate that averages between about 16°C and 30°C year round) and your holiday can be as tranquil – or energetic – as you like! The Princess’s facilities have been completely transformed in the restoration, and guests who prefer the quiet life will fall instantly in love with the newly renovated negative-edge infinity pool, which overlooks the shimmering harbour on the quiet western shore of the resort. Sun loungers shaded by two towering palm trees are perched on island-like pavilions that float just above the pool’s water, with decks made of Syrian limestone and azure blue-glazed tiles. The exclusive Princess Beach Club, which opened during the summer of 2015, is just a short ride from the hotel by private jitney, where it is located on the South Shore along a sheltered turquoise swimming cove that meets a crescent-shaped stretch of soft white-sand shoreline. Wandering from our room to the stunning restaurant, Marcus’ – led by internationally acclaimed Chef Marcus Samuelsson – we take in the tropical planted gardens and immaculate lawns. The focal point of this open-air restaurant is a colourful subway-tiled 30-seat bar lined with teal high-backed stools, surrounded by leather banquettes and a private dining alcove decorated with Warhol portraits of Mick Jagger. Custom hanging pendant lamps and drawings by Nelson Mandela vie with distinctively Bermudian decorative touches such as nautical canvas sail cloths and vintage ephemera above Issue 10 |

the open-air kitchen. An eclectic and delicious menu created by Samuelsson celebrates the island’s vibrant flavours, freshly-caught fish, and locally-sourced seasonal ingredients. A less formal dining experience awaits at the new 1609 Bar & Restaurant, a harbour-side cocktail bar and grill situated on the hotel’s new marina. An openair space with stunning waterfront views, it features a sleek marine-inspired interior with clean, simple lines. Named after the year the survivors of the Sea Venture shipwreck arrived in Bermuda as the island’s first settlers, the open-air dining structure offers a laid-back social atmosphere and a menu that includes charcuterie and flatbread pizza as well as classic Bermudian cocktails such as the Rum Swizzle and Dark & Stormy. In search of relaxation, we take treatments in the bright and peaceful 5,400-square foot spa and fitness centre, Exhale Bermuda, which overlooks Hamilton’s harbour. It boasts nine therapy rooms, four manicure stations and two pedicure thrones with an adjoining Zen lounge and wellbeing boutique. A state-ofthe-art Mind Body Gym and fitness Studio offers expertly created Barre, Yoga and Cardio classes. The spa experience extends outside into a new spa pool and poolside yoga pavilion, while an adjacent 2,150-square-foot fitness centre spans two stories with state-of-the-art equipment by Technogym. Having explored the hotel and grounds, we set off to the private Princess Beach Club, at one of the island’s most picturesque and prestigious spots, South Beaches. We spent a blissful day snorkelling in the clear blue sea, watching shoals of brightly 64 |

Marina lifestyle coloured tropical fish, and lazing under the tropical Bermudan sun. It’s easy to see why this stretch of sand is some of the island’s hottest real estate. But the Hamilton Princess isn’t just about chilled out luxury. The official home of the 35th America’s Cup, it is the first and only full-service marina in Bermuda and houses up to 60 berths, ranging in size to accommodate vessels, pleasure craft, tournament fishing boats, as well as super yachts. A watersports facility outfits guests to tour the island on Jet Ski tours, pontoon rentals, Boston whaler boat rentals, kayaks, Hobie cats, paddle boards, private boat charters, and snorkelling tours. In fact, it’s the perfect spot from which to enjoy the thrills and spills of the America’s Cup next year. We’ll see you there!

Fresh off the back of an exhilarating Caribbean regatta season, where an impressive number of his yachts took podium places, renowned yacht designer Philippe Briand considers the new trend that puts glass at the forefront of sailing yacht design‌ Issue 10 |

F
or decades Philippe Briand’s studio has been a focal point for innovative, technical yacht design. It is a place where trends – strongly based on research – are set and innovations are conceived and refined; the use of glass in sailing yacht design is no exception. Since first introducing curved superstructure windows to his designs over 15 years ago, the possibilities offered through the advancement of glass manufacturing technology have immensely increased the potential applications available for this versatile material. Briand ensures he keeps abreast of these developments: “I spend a lot of time with glass suppliers, helping them to understand the specific requirements of using glass on board any yacht, let alone a performance sailing superyacht like Vertigo or Mari Cha IV (actual Samurai). This continual dialogue ensures that my concepts are always on the cutting edge of what is possible.”
Interior design The fashion for glass superstructures is gaining traction in yacht design. In coming years, the majority of new launches will have a glass coach roof at the very least, and Philippe Briand is at the forefront of this design trend with his sleek, modern concepts including the 130ft Philippe Briand design (pictured right). He credits the material’s continuing growth in popularity to its flexibility, as well as the aesthetic appeal of the futuristic shapes that glass can create. The application of glass in a sailing environment in particular is interesting; the ability to bring the drama and beauty of the exterior inside adds a new dimension to the atmosphere within. Glass can offer near-360-degree panoramic views of the waterline, as well as the uniquely dramatic perspective of a superyacht mast from its base. As Briand hears from clients regularly, owners want their yachts to let in more natural light and provide them with a greater connection with their surroundings. Clever use of glass gives the ‘wow’ factor to any yacht design, creating beautiful, elegant shapes, while also offering an opportunity to embrace new technologies at the same time. Cutting edge technology Briand is a true yachtsman, with high-performance design in his heart. The practicality of using glass is always at the front of his mind, and the ability to walk on top of these structures, unhindered, is of paramount importance. A compound security glass is often used, which is created by using two or more plies of chemically toughened glass. This glass is approved by both Lloyd’s Register and ABS, and accepted by all major classification societies. As larger and larger areas of the superstructure can be built entirely from glass, the team at Philippe Briand has been exploring the use of compound security glass with built-in multifunctional sensor technology, which allows early detection of any glass damage. Here, integrated sensors permanently measure the state of the panes and the information is passed over to the management and alarm systems. Another technology that has been developed is particularly crucial when using glass in the interior of vessels – you can now, with the touch of a button, create a private space on board by turning clear glass opaque. For use in the guest and owner areas, and as clever dividers throughout, this technology stylishly and practically creates virtual space on board. All these factors ensure that the design applications of glass in luxury yachts are constantly evolving, cementing its increasing use as a trend that we will be seeing grace the world’s favourite cruising grounds for decades to come as designers embrace new technology. 68 |

PHILIPPE BRIAND London-based Philippe Briand has been conceiving highperformance yachts since his La Rochelle childhood, and his technical excellence and precision – accompanied by a strong artistic flair – have continued to evolve over what is arguably the most prolific career of any yacht designer today. His portfolio spans four decades, starting with his first IOR Quarter Ton design at the age of 16, and he has created dozens of successful production yacht models, of which over 12,000 vessels have been built. Briand’s designs for competition have included eight yachts for six America’s Cup campaigns. An accomplished sailor himself, he has won the Half-Ton Cup in 1993 and the One-Ton Cup in 1994, in yachts of his own designs. Briand’s first foray into superyachts came in 1995, with a winning submission for the design of the groundbreaking, award-winning 44.7m S/Y Mari Cha III, and then Mari Cha IV. He is one of the few – if not the only – yacht designers with the technical capabilities and experience to design highperformance yachts of both the motor and sailing variety. philippebriand.com

eaturing striking prints and patterns, the National Trust’s summer homewares offer a playful taste of seaside holidays gone by. Highlights include a cream and blue shell-print cushion, while another features a cheerful ‘trio of puffins’ design that was originally painted by hand on the Farne Islands in Northumberland. Manufactured entirely in the UK, this cushion is backed
with striped fabric woven at Quarry Bank Mill, the working cotton mill in Cheshire cared for by the Trust. These are just two of many special places, cared for by the conservation charity, whose stories help inspire beautiful seasonal collections. The designs work in harmony with the collection of soft-to-the-touch throws and rugs. Woven in coastal colours such as
sea green, inky indigo and cool grey, the range reflects the changing colours and windswept shores of the British Isles. The new collection will be available from shop.nationaltrust.org.uk and selected National Trust shops this summer, with 100% of the profits being used to help the conservation charity look after special places like the Farne Islands and Quarry Bank Mill for ever, for everyone. Lovers of luxury fragrance will fall head over heels for this sumptuous selection from Italian perfume house Xerjoff…
F
ounded 10 years ago, the Xerjoff perfume house was launched by Sergio Momo with the aim of blending the most luxurious materials to complement the most affluent global lifestyles through the combination of old world craftsmanship, rare raw materials and a contemporary artistic sensibility. The result is a collection of some of the most exquisite, unique and limited edition scents available in the world today. Years of research and development have culminated in a collaboration of leading international craftsmen combining the distillation, blending and packaging of the precious essences created in Grasse, Spain and Italy. An amalgamation of precious and semi-precious hand cut stones, Quartz, Murano glass, wood, brass, bronze, gold and leather help define each masterpiece which are presented in modern, handcrafted bottles each topped with the signature Xerjoff stopper. Our favourite fragrance in the extensive range, which also includes cologne, is Lira (€255, xerjoff.com). This sparkling Mediterranean citrus blend is gently cocooned by hand picked lavender flowers. Distilled Bulgarian rose and narcotic Egyptian jasmin are both blended in an intoxicating vanilla and caramel love potion. The scent fades with undertones of enchanting oriental spices and liquorice flowers, leaving you with a lingering fragrance that’s both complex and captivating, and nothing like anything you’ll find on the high street. BAVARIA SPORT 34
Hunros is a very clean example of the popular Bavaria Sport 34, commissioned and supplied in 2012 to the current owner. The Bavaria Sport 34 offers great performance powered by twin Volvo Penta D4260 inboards. She’s a really nice boat to drive, with solid and precise handling.
