he excitement, the anticipation – it’s that time of year… TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show is nearly upon us and I for one can’t wait! Back this year with a new name and a new sponsor, it once again promises to be a celebration of all things nautical, boasting a plethora of new launches from the world’s leading yacht manufacturers as well as fun to keep the rest of the family entertained. This issue we’re offering a preview of some of the hottest yachts, which have been kept under wraps until now (from page 8), from the likes of Sunseeker, Prestige and Jeanneau. We’re also giving away 20 tickets to the event, so turn to page 51 to find out more about the Show itself and how to enter this competition. If yacht design really floats your boat, you’ll love our feature on current trends in high-end yacht design (page 30). Marina’s resident luxe guru Dominique Afacan has selected some of her favourite features from the many fabulous yachts she’s had the pleasure of staying aboard this year – I guarantee at least half make it onto your wish list. For those of you already planning some winter sun, we’ve discovered your next dream destination – Phu Quoc in Vietnam. The JW Marriott Resort & Spa opened in January this year, and I was one of the first people to enjoy its uniquely luxurious surrounds (page 56). And if your budget doesn’t stretch to Vietnam, we’ve got a stunning competition from MDL, in association with Dream Yacht Charter and Fairview Sailing (page 98) in which you could win a chartered yacht holiday for two in the British Virgin Islands – so what are you waiting for? Good luck, and enjoy the issue!

he Fjord range of day cruisers with overnight or weekend accommodation – from the 36 Open to the flagship 48 – is already established as a luxury powerboat marque that combines unique design and powerful inboard Volvo Penta engines. Now the brand moves in to a new market with the launch of the Fjord 36 Xpress. Twin 350hp outboard engines give a top speed of 45 knots at low noise levels and with all the benefits afforded by outboards, including driving in river deltas, anchoring in knee-deep water or slipping in and out of the water. With the optional joystick piloting, manoeuvring in confined spaces is easy and the ‘Skyhook’ virtual anchoring system is ideal for short stops. Below deck, the Fjord 36 Xpress has a double cabin as well as a heads with shower. In the cockpit, a wide lounge with two benches and a table create the perfect ambience for an exhilarating open air party. A stylish outdoor kitchen below the T-Top is the perfect place to prepare food and drinks, and when the table and aft bench are lowered, the open cockpit turns into a luxurious sun terrace with a bar, refrigerators and direct access to the water. With all this versatility, the 36 Xpress is as much a private resort as it is an exhilarating powerboat! The Fjord 36 Xpress is priced from £160,000 including VAT but excluding delivery and engines.

g Comin Soon Sunseeker reveals its all-new 76 Yacht at the Southampton Boat Show this September
T
he all-new 76 Yacht from Sunseeker International is the ultimate social and entertaining model of its kind. A natural evolution from its highly successful predecessor, the 75 Yacht, this new model is already in high demand. The 76 Yacht certainly hits the sweet spot in terms of size, space and superyacht feel whilst being extremely manageable for those looking to self-crew. Clever design maximises social and entertaining spaces, whilst the innovative use of glass enhances natural light, making this a bright and airy boat in which to relax and unwind with family and friends. The optional retractable glass skylight over the lower helm affords an open boat experience, allowing light to flood into the helm area, which is complemented by a large companion seating area to port. Natural light also flows into the main deck through extended window lines and unique full-height glazing on the port side, making the dining area a spectacular place to entertain with incredible views over the water. The immensely spacious cockpit, which has a wide flush threshold to the saloon, incorporates flexible layout options, such as lounge seating and cocktail bar. Offering a great variety of
12 |
options to entertain or relax, the generous exterior deck space is 25% larger than the 75 Yacht and the foredeck boasts fore and aft seating, as well as twin sunbeds. There is now also enough space for an increase in tender size to a Williams 445. The vast flybridge is an exceptional feature of the 76 Yacht, and the impressive layout provides the option for a hot tub and cocktail bar. All complemented by the optional transom beach club proving to be a massive hit across several other models, comprising of a BBQ, ‘rain shower’ and fold-down transom seating. The light and space continues below deck, where there are four spacious cabins and four bathrooms, including an impressive full beam master suite with ensuite and dressing area. The spacious crew cabin can accommodate up to three people in a single open-plan layout or can be specified with an enclosed double berth cabin. Although an all new model, the 76 Yacht has an impressive lineage from the Manhattan 73 of 2011 to the recent 75 Yacht, with over 100 boats delivered in just six years; making these models some of the most successful ever in this size range.

Fairline’s new Squadron 53 was crafted with Alberto Mancini’s design expertise. The yacht, based on Fairline’s existing and well proven 53ft hull, features a new Mancini design from the deck upwards, showcasing the direction of Fairline’s future exterior styling. With foredeck seating, a cockpit sun bed and a large flybridge, there’s room to spare whether it’s a short cruise or an extended stay onboard. 16 |

CORMATE
BERTH M020
T27 SUPERMARINE
Fine Design Marine are featuring their new Cormate T27 Supermarine with V8 Diesel power and a full complement of optional extras at berth M020. Designed and developed in Norway, the boat featured at the show this year is fitted with a single Mercruiser 370HP V8 Diesel engine on Bravo 1 XR Racing Drive for 50 knots plus performance and will cruise at 25 knots using only around 1.2 litres per nautical mile, pretty good for a boat that is just short of 8.5m in length. Unique to Cormate, each hull features a step back transom and balance plane that gives the helmsman far more control over running attitude and results in increased comfort to those on-board. This, coupled with ultra-lightweight foam sandwich construction, gives
impressive performance figures. During the Summer of 2015 King Harald V of Norway took delivery of his new Cormate T27 Supermarine to replace his Riva, his new boat now being moored at the royal family’s summer house at Magero, Norway. Given that Cormate has at its core over 30 years of world record breaking design and development experience, perhaps it should come as no surprise that this brand is setting the benchmark for quality and good design. These craft really are something to sit up and take notice of. Price of show boat: £191,818 (including VAT) cormate.co.uk +44 (0)1202 465327

he all new Hanse 548 is introduced to fill the gap between the 505 and the hugely successful 588. With naval architecture by the America Cup winning designers Judel/Vrolijk, the 548 continues their theme of powerful and flexible sailplans allied to the established Hanse traits of stiffness, stability and ease of handling. An optional second forestay takes a furling light weight reacher for those who want to optimise their up wind and reaching performance in light winds, and there is even a selection of keel options for shallow draft or performance requirements. The cockpit is packed full of innovative features with options that include a fixed grp T-top with retractable Bimini, fixed glass windscreen, hydraulic gangway and a wet bar complete with sink, barbecue and fridge. Down below the innovation continues with shower screens in every heads, a master cabin forward, a VIP cabin aft and a galley designed for cooking while sailing or at anchor. The master cabin benefits from the unique Hanse Silent Master Cabin concept with sound insulated bulkheads separating it from the rest of the accommodation. There are various TV and entertainment options and all the electric and electronic systems can be controlled through their own touchpads, the chart plotter or via an app on your smartphone. The Hanse 548 must be one of the most advanced production cruisers available on today’s market with a typical specification costing around £490,000 including VAT, delivery and commissioning.

The latest collaboration between Philippe Briand and Jeanneau, the 44-feet (13.4-metre) SO 440 is a revolutionary new model in the timeless Sun Odyssey cruising boat range that Briand has been designing for the French builder since 2012
T
he Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 is the first of a new generation of Jeanneau yachts. Her hull, drawn by French naval architect Philippe Briand, has taken its inspiration from the latest offshore racing boats to produce as near-perfect sailing experience as possible. The full chine hull and twin rudders provide exceptional stability and speed, while the powerful sail plan is easily managed. The cockpit is a revolution and is unique in the class; the side decks are wide with full bulwark style moulded toe rails, and the sloped side deck allows you to walk straight to and from the cockpit with no climbing over coamings. Below decks, interior designer Jean-Marc Piaton has given the new generation boats a completely new look and feel while remaining in the Jeanneau tradition of seaworthiness and function. He has given us new central galley designs that provide excellent access under way, plenty of counter-top space and innovative space-saving solutions like a pop-up microwave, to name but one. The boat has two layouts with two or three double cabins (all with rectangular beds). Large hull and roof ports provide amazing light throughout the boat. Her world launch is at the Southampton Boat Show this September. Call Trafford Yachts for more details.

“Trends for motoryacht clients are different to sailing yacht clients, as you can imagine. They are perhaps a little bit more open to doing something more flamboyant and taking a risk. Sailboat clients, meanwhile, are sometimes a little bit safer. We’re slightly more involved in the latter, and I’d say the interiors trend has typically been quite clean, clinical – almost minimal. Technology is obviously driving trends, particularly mechanical technology. That allows things like side balconies and clever doors, which we have on some of our recent projects. They are massive engineering pieces – we can dream as much as we want as designers and we can draw what we like, but without some real smart thinking from the technology and structural guys, this sort of stuff isn’t possible. In terms of materials, there’s been a real influx of exterior materials that are actually working inside as well. They feel beautiful, they’re very practical and you can clean them, so it makes sense. In future, I’d like to see sailboats with more visibility into the sea. On motorboats they are always talking about underwater tanks and things, but it’s all very static. It’s difficult with sailboats because of the configuration, but I sail myself and on those days when the dolphins are swimming alongside the boat, it would be nice if you could see that from the cabins.” 32 |

“I always think that the sheer diversity of owners and what they want slightly mitigates against trendspotting, but if you really twisted my arm I’d say there are a couple of things that stand out. One is the much greater connection boats are having with the sea, if that doesn’t sound too obvious. What I mean by that is people wanting beach clubs, fold-down balconies and terraces – there is a blurring of distinction between interior and exterior spaces. Hand in hand with that is much greater use of architectural and structural glazing – more glass or windows in simple terms. Boundaries are being pushed in terms of the structural integrity of glass and what you can do with it. Technology is certainly affecting interiors. There is obvious stuff relating to audio-visuals and you can do great things with lighting now – things like heat efficient LED lighting are working their way in. It’s much the same technology as you’d expect to see on land – sometimes yachting is ahead of the game, but sometimes it can be a slow adopter. There are bands of regulations, too, which become increasingly onerous as yachts gets larger. We’ve had all sorts of things on drawing boards over the years – clients who have wanted a hydroponic garden so that they could be self-sufficient, big, complicated pools – there are all sorts of requests, which you do your best to work in, if budgets allow. We’re quite magpie-like here, we draw inspiration from all over really. If you came in and saw books and pictures on our shelves in our studio, you’d see so much breadth, whether it’s interiors, automotive, architecture – lots of that gets observed and distilled. Our heritage, too, is a big source of inspiration and ideas although we’re probably overly careful not to look back too much – but equally you’d be mad not to be aware of a 50-year back catalogue.”

Claydon Reeves have masterminded some of the world’s most beautiful yachts, including the new 36m Delta One and the award-winning 34m Solis. “Superyachts can be anything they want to be these days. There are more and more possibilities coming all the time, but I think it’s that integration of an exterior and an interior that gets the best results – you can’t do a really striking interior if you’re compromised by what the package of the boat really is. We were involved in both of those elements on both Delta One and Solis. I can’t talk too much about the former yet but Solis was a wonderful project for us. We pursued a very low-to-waterline vista, so there is a nice blend of exterior and interior. It also uses a very nice palette of colours and has quite a laid back aesthetic for that type of boat. Of course, technology is driving some of the current trends – it might not directly affect soft furnishings, but it certainly does affect the build of the boat, which can then be reflected on the interior. In the superyacht industry we often talk about being at a super high level of technology, fit and finish. But if you look at aviation, it’s so much higher than that – just the precision of it. It’s so perfect because it has to be. It can’t fail, ever. That mindset inspires us. Aviation in recent times has become quite a big feature of how we think within Claydon Reeves and it informs a lot of the things we’re doing. In terms of materials, all the normal woods and leathers will continue to be used. But new technology means that things like intelligent fabrics will all be coming into use. That’s an interesting thing. Decking is also a massive element with superyachts. It would be amazing to see someone do a very big yacht and not have a teak deck. It would be a small nod towards our industry becoming more sustainable.” 34 |

Lifejacket evolution We’ve come a long way since the days of cork lifejackets, when a sprayhood was a distant dream. But while technology has advanced hugely, the need to produce lifejackets that save lives has remained unchanged

fair few people claim to have invented the forerunner to the modern lifejacket… In 1765, Dr John Wilkinson not only patented a cork lifejacket but also wrote a 131 page book about it (entitled Tutamen nauticum: or, The Seaman’s preservation from shipwreck, diseases and other calamities incident to mariners – you can read it on Google Books), dedicating it to the King and asking for his patronage for his invention that had already ‘been the means of preserving the lives of a very considerable number of ship-wrecked seamen; some of whom were brought safe to land after being several hours in the water’. Dr Wilkinson’s first experiments with cork lifejackets began in 1757, so by the time his invention was patented he was convinced of its usefulness. He experimented extensively (details of these experiments can all be found in his book) and the most efficient design was found to be ‘two pieces of thin light canvas… sewed together in a proper form; betwixt these, duly inserted and well secure, are put a sufficient number of oval-formed pieces of select sound compact cork… disposed in so convenient a manner as to be perfectly comfortable.’ Like today’s lifejacket designers, from the beginning comfort was key, as was the fact that the jacket needed to allow the wearer flexibility. In 1854, however, the concept behind Dr Wilkinson’s invention benefited from the higher profile offered by the RNLI, which had been founded in 1824. Captain Ross Ward, an RNLI Inspector, created the next generation cork vest-style jacket. This was made in a similar way, but rather than ovals of cork, Captain Ward’s jacket had small blocks of cork sewn to the canvas body. The aim was again, to allow freedom of movement when swimming or rowing, as at the time volunteers had to manually row their boats when launching to rescue in stormy seas. The lifejacket soon proved its worth when, in 1861, Whitby lifeboat capsized with the loss of all but one of the crew. Henry Freeman, the sole surviving lifeboat man, had been wearing one of the new cork lifejackets. Interesting personalities From here, lifejacket design moved forward as more people became involved in refining the concept. James Kinnear, described in the 1875 Aberdeen Journal as an artificial limb-maker, is credited with inventing a new ‘life-saving jacket’, which he tested off Abercrombie Jetty. In 1912, from the comfort of the terrace of the House of Commons, MPs watched William Carrol testing his new life-saving jacket and lifebelt. But little else is known about these two early modern lifejacket pioneers. The extraordinary French inventor, Gustave Trouvé – who invented, among other things, a pocket-sized carbon-zinc battery, an early metal detector and the outboard motor – is also credited with inventing a battery-powered lifejacket in 1900 (although officially his brother, Jules, was granted the patent for this). The battery was used to inflate the lifejacket, to power a light to transmit and receive SOS messages and to launch a distress flare (Gustave Trouvé: French Electrical Genius (1839-1902) by Kevin Desmond). At the beginning of the 20th century, cork was surpassed by kapok as the material of choice for lifejackets. Kapok is a natural fibre with some extraordinary properties. Its hollow core makes Kapok very lightweight. It is also buoyant. It has a waxy coating, which helps to repel water and air bubbles trapped in the centre cavity of each fibre trap air. Kapok is five times more buoyant than cork. Kapok was also used as a stuffing for soft toys, so was much more comfortable. In 1904, the RNLI introduced Kapok lifejackets for its crews and these were used until foam lifejackets became the norm in the 1970s and the Beaufort lifejacket was introduced
Marina tech
for lifeboat crews. The inherent buoyancy offered by closedcell foam supported the wearer and additional buoyancy was available from a bladder that could be orally inflated, giving enough buoyancy to support another person. Despite the bulky nature of the foam Beaufort jacket, it remained in service with the RNLI until 1992. In this period, lifejacket manufacturers proliferated, but few can claim the heritage of Crewsaver, established in 1957 in Gosport, Hampshire, and at the forefront of lifejacket design and technology since then. In 1992, the RNLI and Crewsaver created a lifejacket that was lighter and more comfortable which, rather than offering inherent buoyancy, was inflated by carbon dioxide. And it was this jacket that came to replace the long-serving Beaufort. Crewsaver’s key products echo the development of lifejackets since the mid-20th century, so we traced this evolution through some pioneering lifejackets… Lifevest, 1959 Crewsaver’s 1959 Lifevest may seem a world away from lifejackets available today. For example, it was inflated by the wearers themselves using a ‘non-returnable mouth inflator’ and the recommendation was that you partially inflated it before wearing! The brochure also suggests it ‘can be worn either over or under sailing clothes’, a point on which advice has completely changed. However, dig a little deeper and you find that this product has echoes of the features that are key in the design of today’s lifejackets. The design offered the user ‘complete freedom of movement’ and a loop adjustment on the back strap meant that the lifejackets could fit ‘any sized person’, benefits that can also be found in Crewsaver’s newest lifejackets, the ErgoFit range. Seafire, 1970s A commercial lifejacket, the pioneering Seafire was designed for offshore work, and to comply with the Department of Trade’s requirements for offshore lifejackets. It was unique at its time in that it was a dual chamber lifejacket that offered automatic inflation of both chambers. Its front panel was made with a fire resistant material making it ideal when welding or working in high fire risk areas. With echoes of today’s products it was easy to rearm and repack. Issue 14 |

44 |
Crewfit, 1980s 1984 saw the launch of Crewsaver’s iconic Crewfit lifejacket. The styling and shape revolutionised lifejacket design and proved enduringly popular. It became the benchmark for design and function of lifejackets for the leisure user. With the Crewfit, Crewsaver pioneered gas operated air-only lifejackets. The Crewfit design incorporated features that inform the development of more modern lifejackets, from offering ‘complete freedom of movement and comfort’ to the position of the buoyancy chambers. The evolution of lifejacket design can be seen in the 2009 Crewfit 190N. This moved the range on towards the new style Crewfit and ErgoFit that were to come, it was ‘shorter and more compact than the Crewfit 150N’ and had a three dimensional cover that followed ‘the natural contours of the body’ something that the Fusion 3D technology, introduced with the ErgoFit range, perfected. ErgoFit range, 2010s The ErgoFit range, launched in 2012, introduced new Fusion 3D technology. Fusion 3D creates lifejackets that are moulded to the shape of your body and sit off the neck, giving the user total freedom of movement. Lifejackets so comfortable you forget you’re wearing them. Class leading buoyancy, fast turn speeds and the unique cutaway design, all set the ErgoFit range apart. Next generation In 2014, 30 years after it was originally designed and manufactured, Crewsaver’s Crewfit range had a makeover. Using the same Fusion 3D technology that was developed with the ErgoFit range, Crewsaver added to its complete lifejacket range with new lifejackets including the Crewfit Sport, an affordable, 3D designed, lifejacket with a focus on Crewsaver’s core values of comfort, style and performance. This opened up the market, making comfortable, ergonomically designed, lifejackets accessible. As sailing becomes more physical and more demanding, today’s lifejackets have to work harder than ever. America’s Cup sailors now routinely wear buoyancy aids with added armour to protect themselves from impacts; the Crewsaverdesigned buoyancy aid for the Artemis 2017 America’s Cup team has attachment points for spare air in the event of a crew member being trapped under the boat. Elsewhere, new lifejackets are being designed that emit a signal via AIS as soon as the lifejacket is inflated; that is, when the wearer falls overboard. A tracking programme on an app indicates how long the person has been in the sea, current wind speed, water temperature etc. Another lifejacket specifically for divers uses the wearer’s heartbeat and smart fabric technology to monitor respiration and spot signs of drowning, at which point the vest inflates and returns the wearer to the surface. The future of lifejacket design is moving further down the path of using our obsession with information, data and communication to help save lives, and that can only be a good thing.

he Audi brand has been synonymous with four-wheeldrive performance saloons since the original Quattro first hit the rally stages in 1980. The road-going saloon, based on the Audi 80, was released at the end of that year featuring Audi’s Quattro permanent four-wheel-drive coupled to a turbocharged petrol. There had been four-wheel-drive vehicles before, but Audi were the pioneers of the performance saloon that has spawned the likes of the rally-bred Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Evo. Audi have always remained true to the Quattro formula, and while lesser models in the range may now sport just front-wheel-drive, the top end and high performance models all benefit from an evolution of that original Quattro concept. The Allroad I’ve been fortunate to spend a considerable amount of time driving the latest A4 saloon. It’s a highly accomplished car with impeccable
road manners and a well-considered interior with very high levels of build quality – something that has always set Audi apart from other premium brands. The A4 Allroad is very much carved from the same block as the Volvo V60 Cross Country I tested in issue 12 of Marina. A premium estate car with increased ride height and four-wheel-drive for light off-roading – an SUV for people who don’t want to drive an SUV. In the case of the Allroad, ride height has been increased by 34mm. Not a huge gain in ground clearance, and you certainly won’t be scaling mountains, but enough to ensure rough tracks are no longer met with the sickening sound of scraping metal that befits regular road cars. In the event that ground clearance does become an issue, the Allroad is equipped with metallic skid plates front and rear. To offset the raised centre of gravity the wheel track has also been increased by 20mm over a standard A4, and although there is a proportional increase in body roll from the extra height the chassis remains composed and very well controlled, if a little softer than its

The iconic four rings – forever associated with the Quattro brand and high performance fourwheel-drive Well thought out controls are the story of the Audi – from the simple park button on the auto shifter to the rotary control of the excellent infotainment system, everything inside the car has a job. While other manufacturers try to simplify the number of buttons cluttering their interiors, Audi provide all the buttons you need in just the right place

standard height siblings. Press on, and you can tell the Allroad has lost a little of the sharpness enjoyed by a standard A4, but at normal driving speeds you’d be hard-pressed to spot the difference. Our test car came with the excellent seven-speed automatic, which perfectly mated to the 190bhp 2.0-litre turbo diesel (a combination that will attract most UK sales) the lazy, low-down, nature of the diesel power delivery suiting the more relaxed handling and ride comfort offered in the Allroad. The auto-box features steering wheel mounted paddles and sport-mode, which sharpens up the throttle and holds gears for longer – I have to confess to spending most of the test in sport-mode because I felt it better suited the car, switching back to drive only around town where the sharper throttle becomes tiresome. A look inside As befits a high-level model from a premium brand certain things should come as standard, and the Allroad doesn’t disappoint – with adaptive suspension, xenon headlights, tri-zone climate control, keyless entry and starting, parking sensors and Audi’s excellent infotainment system with 7in display. Our Sport-spec car added to this with Alcantara leather trim, heated and electrically adjustable front sports seats, parking assist, upgraded LED headlights, acoustic glazing and sat nav – it also upgraded the infotainment to include a Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system.
Marina’s Opinion As with the Volvo V60 Cross Country and the other similar offerings by Skoda and Seat, it’s easy to overlook the Allroad in favour of a traditional SUV like the excellent Q5. However, spec for spec, the Allroad is cheaper to buy and run than its taller cousin, rolls far less and handles far better and bridges the gap between an SUV and a traditional estate car in a way that offers key benefits to both customer bases. It’s actually quite hard to argue against it. And if you assume an SUV will offer more luggage space you might be surprised – the Allroad can swallow 505 litres with the seats up and a cavernous 1,510 folded, against 550 and 1,550 provided by the Q5. One competition the Q5 does win hands down is tug of war – the Allroad can tow a maximum 1,900kg, fine for most of us but a long way short of its taller cousin. The Q5 can pull up to 2,400kg, so if you’re looking to move a boat on a regular basis you might well be better off going down the SUV road rather than the Allroad. Clearly not a budget offering, our review spec Sport with a few hefty options came in at £47,955, a not inconsiderable £4,335 more than the V60 Cross Country (which had a very similar spec and performance, if slightly smaller load carrying capability). In its defense, the Audi does manage to feel like a more premium vehicle and, although on paper the performance figures match up, on the road the Audi feels the stronger car.

estled in Southampton’s harbour and located in the very heart of the cosmopolitan maritime city, Ocean Village Marina offers a vibrant and eclectic leisure destination for both boat owners and visitors alike to enjoy. The hotel has been uniquely designed to resemble a luxury cruise liner and will offer a spectacular rooftop champagne bar, which will be further complemented by the opening of a number of new bars and restaurants at the marina. Ocean Village exudes MDL’s ultimate marina experience, perfectly harmonising comprehensive member facilities with a bustling leisure scene. The reconfiguration of the marina will allow members to make the very best of the facilities available and ensure they can accommodate larger yachts and continue to be the preferred destination for visiting superyachts. The transformation at the marina will firmly cement its position as one of the most luxurious five star marina locations in the UK. With all this activity, interest in the completed development is set to be high and, in readiness, MDL Marinas is taking advance membership enquiries. Protecting Eddystone Research reveals that the seabed beneath iconic landmark Eddystone lighthouse is showing early signs of recovery as marine life returns to the area

ddystone Lighthouse stands 13 miles south west of Plymouth, on an outcrop of rocks that are well known as a hazard to shipping. The current lighthouse is the fourth to be erected there. But it’s what lies beneath the waves that interests us… The seabed around Eddystone was recently protected from some of the more damaging kinds of fishing, and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS, /Marina’s/ charity of the year) says that the results are good. The area is showing early signs of recovery after decades of trawling by heavy bottom-towed fishing gears. Over the last three years the site has been surveyed by underwater cameras, and the latest results show that numbers of sea anemones and cup corals – beautiful but fragile animals that live on the seabed – have more than doubled. Many other species that can now live on the seabed undisturbed have thrived, providing shelter and food for fish and other marine creatures. Dr Jean-Luc Solandt, MCS Specialist in Marine Protected Areas, is part of the team looking at the evidence from the underwater camera footage. He says there’s been a visible increase in wildlife: “Seven out of ten types of delicate seabed animals, which grow upright and are churned up by the chains and sharp metal teeth dragged over the seabed by trawlers, have increased. Two years after the dredging ban, the area covered by bryzoans, which are tiny primitive animals that live in colonies and provide habitat for juvenile scallops, has doubled. “When they become dense and carpet the seabed, delicate upright growth forms become a sheltering habitat for other species and filter particles from the water column. By dredging these areas up, scallop dredgers are dredging away their future. Bottom trawls stop the ocean becoming richer.” The remotely operated technology is run by a team from the Marine Conservation Society, the Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority, and the University of Exeter. The work is funded by Plymouth-based Princess Yachts and is set to carry on for another three years. All the organisations involved in the project recently got together at the Princess Yachts headquarters to review some of the footage. Marketing Director for Princess Yachts, Kiran Haslam,
says: “We are incredibly proud to be the first motor yacht brand to partner with the Marine Conservation Society and we are 100% committed to this project. The ocean is our playground, and it is a primary concern of the entire Princess community, with not only customers and our company committed, but also our distribution network showing overwhelming support with pledges from Princess Yachts Monaco and Princess Yachts Russia to provide substantial financial support to the MCS.” MCS says that the results demonstrate how marine protected areas benefit our seas, and wants to see a network of marine protected areas around UK coasts to benefit marine life and people who depend on the seas for their living. mcsuk.org/mpa

Big clean up MCS has teamed up with Waitrose to create biggest beach and river clean event series ever… The Marine Conservation Society is running a year of beach and river cleans around the UK, after receiving funds from supermarket chain, Waitrose. They have joined forces to create a series of beach and river clean events that will get more people than ever before cleaning and recording litter from our beaches and rivers. The Waitrose Beach and River Clean-up series will kick off during our Great British Beach Clean event from 15 to 18 September. You can register now to take part in clean-ups at mcsuk.org/waitrose “Beach litter has steadily risen over the two decades that MCS volunteers have been recording it on UK beaches,” explains MCS Beachwatch Manager, Lauren Eyles. “Last year, on average in the UK, 694 items of litter were collected for every 100 metres cleaned. Plastic bottles and carrier bags, nappies, balloons and tiny plastic pieces can be found on almost every beach in the UK – either washed up, blown there or dropped. Our beaches are suffering, and most of the litter found can be traced back to us – the general public.” Register today to take part in the Waitrose Beach and River Clean-ups. You can join in as clean-up organiser or a volunteer at events between 15 and 18 September or at other clean-ups that are planned throughout 2017 and 2018 at mcsuk.org/waitrose

DONNA BEAUFOY EXPLORES VIETNAM’S NATURAL AND CULTURAL BOUNTY FROM HER LUXURIOUS BASE AT THE JW MARRIOTT PHU QUOC EMERALD BAY, NESTLED IN THE PRISTINE BEACH OF BAI KHEM
T
he first international luxury hotel brand on Vietnam’s ‘pearl island’, JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay opened its doors to the public on 25 January 2017, with the irreverent style of renowned architect Bill Bensley evident throughout this fantastical resort. Bensley’s design narrative for the site was a fictional academy of learning, ‘Lamarck University’, inspired by French naturalist Jean Baptiste Lamarck. This vision is carried throughout the resort, giving it a truly harmonious aesthetic. An evolution in the architectural style, from its supposed beginnings in the 1880s through to the 1940s, ensures that resort feels like a collection of individual boutique hotels, rather than a large resort, and each building is modelled after an academic department. For budding mixologists the best spot would be The Department of Chemistry, where I learnt the fine art of cocktail making; those wanting to test out their sporting ability should head for the Department of Physical Education; and the imagined Mushroom Mycology Wharf has been transformed into a tranquil Alice and Wonderland themed Spa by JW. ACCOMMODATION JW Marriott Phu Quoc enjoys a spectacular, unrivalled location on Bai Khem – which means ‘ice cream beach’ – with its own pristine white beach, overlooking the rugged

Vietnamese coastline and neighbouring islands. The resort offers 244 beautifully appointed rooms, suites, and stand-alone villas all modelled on the early 20th century style of the fictional Lamarck University. To enhance guests’ voyage of discovery, which begins as soon as they drive through the resort’s entrance gates, flanked by enormous ridgeback dogs, accommodation has been artfully decorated with authentic artefacts and unique pieces that reflect the academic department it is based within. These characterful features blend harmoniously with modern comfort and JW world-class service to make for an exceptional stay. A serene landscaped resort village setting surrounds the various tiers of accommodation, which are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, spacious bathrooms with a pair of vanity basins and lavish amenities, and other luxurious facilities such as 24-hour room service. For me the massive shower head fixed high up in the ceiling took showering to a luxurious new level. Music played from the discreetly hidden speakers while I stood in the middle of my en-suite bathroom feeling like I was being rained on by the most gentle of tropical downpours… Bliss. Dining The variety and quality of dining options at JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay is unrivalled in Vietnam, and as with the rest of the resort there is a story to each. Whether guests are looking to enjoy flavoursome, freshly caught fish while overlooking the ocean, tastebudawakening local specialities that have been given a modern twist, or classics inspired by the University’s purported origins under French colonial rule, the offering is tantalising. The resort boasts 5 restaurants and lounges. Tempus Fugit is an all-day dining restaurant, showcasing Vietnamese cuisine with locally sourced ingredients alongside a contemporary Japanese kitchen and classic French dishes. Pink Pearl serves up authentic Cantonese cuisine in a splendid beachfront mansion, while Red Rum specialises in an elaborate selection of fresh local seafood in a more relaxed beachside setting. If French patisserie is more your style, head to French & Co – you won’t be disappointed!
Bill treats his guests to a Mad Hatter’s tea party – simply the best and maddest way to spend an afternoon!

Don’t miss the heavenly experience of visiting French & Co, the resort’s French patisserie, for your sugar fix
If you’d like to indulge in a more immersive gastronomic experience, guests can take part in mixology classes in the Department of Chemistry, the resort’s sleek cocktail bar, where ‘chemists’ don lab coats to mix up an enticing menu of elixirs and small bites for guests to enjoy with a spectacular view of Emerald Bay. At French & Co you can learn the secret art of patisserie; or if wine’s more your thing, why not explore Pink Pearl’s wine cellar during an oenology master class.
Bill greets a delivery of artefacts with his usual excitement – it was like watching a child open their presents on Christmas morning!

Physical Education offers lessons in many traditional Vietnamese activities such as Vo Viet Nam (Vietnamese martial arts) and Thung Chai (learn to manoeuvre a traditional Vietnamese basket boat). These all run alongside activities such as Sunrise Hatha Yoga, Hydro Fit, Paddle Boarding, Beach Volleyball and a weekly ‘Sports Day’ held at the running track. The resort also offers experiences such as stargazing walks, Den Long (traditional lantern) making lessons and Vietnamese language classes. Along with the opportunity to learn about Vietnamese dance and costume during an engaging workshop and Non La (traditional Vietnamese hat) making classes.
A bold colour palette and chic finishing touches make each room strikingly unique
One of the main things that struck me about this completely aweinspiring hotel was the immense feeling of space and height in every room… Even the reception!
EXCLUSIVE EXCURSIONS Further afield, immersive trips from the resort include guided visits to the Phu Quoc Bee Farm and the Vinpearl Safari, and treks into the forest surrounding the resort to learn about the native flora and fauna, ending up at a viewpoint overlooking the resort and sipping tea made from offerings of the forest. The more hands-on survivalists can discover the hidden waterways of Phu Quoc’s National Park via kayak and explore beneath the enchanting rainforest canopy, or learn the delicate art of Vietnamese fishing and even catch their own dinner! By bike, you can travel to Coconut Prison and delve into the dark side of this beautiful island’s history. And at night, experience a real taste of life in Vietnam with complementary transfers from the resort to the local night market – something not to be missed! Staying in such a unique resort, with rooms that each cost upward of US$1m to create, is an incredible experience. Place that hotel in a setting that unrivalled culturally or naturally and that experience genuinely does become once in a lifetime – I can’t recommend it enough!

The cost of staying on board is generally lower than you’d pay in a hotel in a similar location and, because boats are close to the centre of the action, everything you need, from parking to restaurants, can be as little as a few steps away. The owner will tell you everything you need to know about the boat and the area and, with boats in more than 60 countries worldwide, you could find yourself on a luxury motor cruiser, yacht, canal boat or historic schooner in locations including the Bahamas, Mallorca, Monaco, Italy, Jersey and of course hundreds across the UK. Velvet Morning, London Boutique hotels are synonymous with luxury, individuality and cool design; perfect for those who want to stand out from the crowd. If you could find something similar on a London canal, where the sky is reflected in a tree-lined corridor of peaceful water, you’d have a truly unique place to stay. Beds on Board’s romantic narrowboat in Little Venice is just that – a stylish London bolt hole with mesmerising river views and a gorgeous interior. Staying on a boat puts you at the heart of the local action at a fraction of the cost of a room in the city – and the 57ft Velvet Morning is every bit as luxurious and welcoming as any boutique hotel. Guests can slip into the bubbles of a beautiful claw-foot bath, then pad across a gleaming wood floor to cosy up in front of a flickering wood burner in a living area panelled in white wood carved with hearts. Furnishings are comfortable and luxurious, with crisp white bedding on the master bed, and a child’s bunk. The seating area converts to a double bed allowing four people to stay on board. Just to the north of Paddington, the picturesque neighbourhood is home to quirky waterside cafés, and a walk along the river will bring you to Regent’s Park, and on past London Zoo to the open-air markets of Camden Town. Little Venice itself boasts some of the most interesting independent theatre venues in London, and visitors can watch award-winning fringe and comedy from the tables of the Canal Café Theatre or take a seat at a real theatre on a canal boat. The canal is a hidden oasis in the heart of our capital city, and a stay on a traditional narrowboat gives you that perfect boutique experience from a completely new perspective. Prices for Velvet Morning start from only £120 per night for up to four people.
the town’s well-marked network of footpaths. Just inland, wine lovers can visit some of Catalonia’s most popular wineries. At Finca Bell-lloc, winery tours and tastings can be arranged year-round, and organic meals are served on site. Keen cooks can learn about local fish and Catalan cooking styles and methods at the Fishing Museum in Palamos, where there are demonstrations and active exhibits – as well as the chance to sample the local specialities. Catalonian dishes are rich and varied, relying heavily on ingredients popular along the Mediterranean coast, and focusing on fresh fish and seafood with vegetables, olives, tomatoes, and rice or pasta. Local specialities to look out for include butifarra, an uncured spiced sausage; the Catalan stew escudella, made with meat, beans, potatoes and cabbage; bacalao salt cod, typical of the region; and crema Catalana, a creamy pudding made with sugar, egg yolks and cinnamon with caramelised sugar on the top. A good selection of restaurants and bars in both the town and back at the marina offer a choice of traditional Catalan recipes and innovative cuisine – the traditional seafood restaurant Maria de Cadaques is probably the most famous restaurant in town, where the star dish is grilled Palamos prawns. Prices for Mr Whizz start from only £175 per night for up to four people. Issue 14 |

hortlisted for Best New Restaurant 2016 in the Restaurant Magazine Awards, M Victoria St houses a world-class M Grill dining room, a 100% gluten-free M Raw restaurant, public and private members’ bars, private dining room, event spaces and a wine tasting room, all of which are entered via M Wine Store. Chef Michael Reid, who is a regular face on British TV screens and trained at Le Gavroche and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, returned from Melbourne to the London restaurant scene to open M Victoria St. While in Australia, Michael worked closely with celebrity chef Shannon Bennet at the award-winning Vue de Monde restaurant and Jardin Tan. He has worked with some of Australia’s finest chefs, including George Calombaris and Peter Gilmore, and alongside Heston Blumenthal at The Skinny Duck, Melbourne. Marina caught up with Michael to find out what’s on the menu at M Victoria St, and his plans for the future… MARINA What made you decide to return from Australia to open M Victoria Street? MR I started out as a consultant for M, opening our first restaurant the year before in Threadneedle St. I spent about six months travelling between London and Melbourne opening restaurants within months of each other in each location, but M was special and the chance to work again with Martin Williams was just too good an offer to turn down. MARINA How did you get where you are today? MR After I graduated university with a BA in Business and Marketing I did a modern-day apprenticeship at the In & Out Club in St James. I quickly progressed to working for two legends of the industry – Gordon Ramsay and Michel Roux Jnr – at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay and Le Gavroche. This is where my cooking was taken to another level, and the intensity and skill of these kitchens really shaped the chef I have become today. I then opened my first restaurant as sous chef with the Gaucho Group and was quickly promoted to head chef a month later. I went on to run Richmond and the second-largest restaurant at the O2 Arena for another two years before becoming the group Executive Chef, overseeing all 20 restaurants with the addition of their new brand Cau.
I left Gaucho and London for Melbourne, Australia. After a six-month sabbatical where I was a stagiaire in some of the best restaurants in the world, including Attica with Ben Shewry, I took a job with Shannon Bennet of the Vue de Monde group and went on to open his newest restaurant, Jardin Tan, a French/Vietnamese concept. MARINA What defines the M Restaurant concept, and what makes it stand out from other restaurants on the London scene? MR M is so much more than just a restaurant; we are a multifaceted venue with a restaurant, bar, private members’ bar and wine store. We set out to provide the best service in the industry and only use the best products, but the key was to be able to do this at the right price so that everyone could enjoy a world-class offering. I believe we have done this: we have made luxury accessible! MARINA What’s your favourite M restaurant dish and why? MR We have some of the best beef in the world on the menu – I’m very proud of that – from our Blackmore Wagyu, which is exclusively sold at M in the UK, to our new British beef offering at the soon-to-be-opened M Bar & Grill in Twickenham. MARINA Is anything new planned at M Victoria St for this/early next year? MR We have just started doing a Masquerade night every few months, with our next one on the 29 September. The first one we did was so much fun: burlesque dancers, hula hoops, comedians, live DJ and so on! I do a special menu which is a sensory playful experience too, completely different to what we normally do which is a lot of fun! MARINA Do you have any other plans you would like to tell us about? MR We are about to open our third site in Twickenham later this month. It’s a new concept M Bar & Grill which is inspired by the famous London Grill Dining Rooms of the 1970s. I’ve created a modern interpretation of a British Grill; offering a broad menu which includes select cuts of Perthshire Beef (including Highland Wagyu) which are exclusive to M. One of the restaurant’s signature dishes will be undoubtedly my take on everyone’s favourite: fish and chips! You’ll have to eat it to believe it…

Treasure trove Somerset’s Kin Lifestyle, ‘the little green shop’ on North Street, Wellington, is filled with gorgeous goodies from around the globe…
K
in Lifestyle’s proprietors, Alice and Helen, ascribe to the Japanese concept of wabi sabi – finding beauty in imperfection. They value authenticity and simplicity in the pursuit of a modest uncluttered lifestyle that focuses more on the people who live in a space than the objects they share it with. With this in mind, Alice and Helen have carefully sourced original and individual homewares, furniture and skincare products that use natural materials and craftsmanship from different cultures around the world. ‘Made by families for families’ is a principle that the pair try hard to adopt. Step inside the little green shop and you’ll find traditional Indian antiques, chosen for their raw natural materials, unique shapes, functionality and understated charm, including rice measures and metal dendi storage pots. Alongside these antiques sit Scandinavian and Dutch kitchenwares and soft furnishings. Styled like the home you wish you lived in, Kin Lifestyle is forever changing as Alice and Helen discover new trends from around the world and introduce new objects into their decor, so pop in and get inspired. kinlifestyle.co.uk

Created for the eco-conscious adventurer in all of us, this stick contains zinc oxide, which protects physically, not chemically, and provides broad spectrum UVA/ UVB coverage with 80 minutes of water resistance. Shea butter helps to keep skin soft, nourished and protected from moisture loss, while coconut oil – packed with rich fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants – is the ultimate natural moisturiser for skin and hair. Sunflower seed oil, rich in essential fatty acids, helps maintain the skin barrier and reduce trans-epidermal water loss.
