MARK CAMPION (CEO) OF EXPLORER MOTOR YACHTS TELLS US ABOUT HIS HOT PICKS FOR THE COMING MONTHS…

EXPLORER 40 SEDAN

With a range of trawler yachts from 40-75 feet it is difficult to pick a personal favourite, however there’s little doubt that the Explorer 40 Sedan holds a very special place in the hearts of everyone at Explorer – as well as those of happy owners cruising all over the globe in all sorts of conditions. As a traditional full-displacement design, the 40 Sedan is offered with a choice of shaft-driven engine packages, either single or twin. This superb hull form has excellent seakeeping qualities, great

8|

directional stability from the long central keel and unbelievable fuel economy. Externally she offers features often only found on much larger designs, a deep safe cockpit, all round side deck access, wheel house side door and a large flybridge with hard top option. The two-cabin interior has a single-level saloon with traditional or dinette layouts and, of course, the bespoke handcrafted finish found on all of our models. This really is a compact, genuine trawler design packing a mighty punch.

50 SEDAN

There is a certain presence about the Explorer 50 Sedan. With her fresh, clean and elegant lines she definitely turns heads wherever she goes, but don’t be deceived by her beauty – this fine lady can really hold her own at sea. From the personal experience gained during an overnight Mediterranean passage from the Balearics to Barcelona in truly horrible conditions, I can attest that the structural integrity and seakeeping of this trawler is a credit to both the Explorer shipyard and the designers, and gives all her owners both a feeling of pride

of ownership as well as safety and security. She is as equally at home meandering around at 10 knots as she is cruising at 18 knots or even dashing home at over 20, always with style and always safely. A sumptuously comfortable bespoke interior compliments her superb hull design, with a full choice of timber finishes, a great shipyard specification including air con, generator, thruster and flybridge hardtop all as standard, and a lovely twin cabin/twin bathroom layout. All in all, the Explorer 50 Sedan is certainly one to watch if you’re looking for a 50 foot, semi-displacement trawler design displaying beautiful quality throughout.

EXPLORER

60/62 PILOT HOUSE

At Explorer Motor Yachts we fully understand that just as no two owners are the same, neither are their cruising requirements, and we are fortunate to be able to offer a fully bespoke design service to take each owner’s dreams and turn them into a reality. Nowhere does this manifest itself more than in our latest projects for the magnificent Explorer 60/62 Pilot House design. Offered as the Explorer 60 or Explorer 62 with extended cockpit and flybridge, this fine trawler yacht demonstrates to the full the highest levels of quality, finish and attention to detail found in all of our models.

With stunning hand-crafted interiors utilising the very best of materials and fittings throughout, this fine motor yacht is available with a full choice of joinery styles, timber finishes and the particular individuality only found in a truly bespoke construction process. Many of our owners prefer to continue with more traditional ‘trawler yacht’ styling, while others wish to add their own contemporary twist to this wonderful interior – whichever you choose, this individual flair will be fully supported by what we consider to be one of the best 62 foot hull designs available for true semi-displacement trawler yacht performance. EXPLORER HUDSON BAY 50

If you take our many years’ experience designing and building high-quality trawler yachts and translate that into a stylish 50 foot performance cruising design you’re bound to end up with something special. Well, we have done just that. The new Hudson Bay 50 is built to the same exacting standards as all our Explorers but adds that extra touch of sport performance if you are looking to cruise with more pace. Offered with a three-cabin layout or two-cabin version with fullwidth master en-suite stateroom, this is a truly luxurious interior design. With the choice of a traditional or contemporary styled finish and a

single-level saloon and galley flowing seamlessly into a large cockpit, the ultimate relaxing and entertaining space and experience is yours to enjoy. Superb all-round vision comes from the deck-level saloon and galley, while three large vertical hull windows flood the central cabins with a light and airy feel. With a great standard specification and options available such as an electric roof hatch and the extraordinary Hydro-Lift dinghy launch system, if you’re looking for a bit more performance but with all the quality and reliability associated with Explorer Motor Yachts, the Hudson Bay 50 must feature high on the list of ones to watch.

REVIEW AFTER THE SUCCESS OF THE FLYER 6 TRIUMVIRATE, BENETEAU HAS BROADENED THE CONCEPT WITH THE FLYER 7 TRIO. NICK BURNHAM PICKS HIS FAVOURITE…

P

latform sharing is nothing new in the automotive world. Under the three very different bodies of the Skoda Fabia, Volkswagen Polo and Audi A1 lie the same basic engines and underpinnings. It makes sense – share the ‘hard point’ investment costs across three very different markets for a broader appeal. Good news for the manufacturer but good news for the consumer too, who is given more choice than might otherwise be possible. Boat manufacturers are dipping a tentative toe into the platform-sharing water; the Princess V48, for example, is available in a closed coupe version and an open backed hardtop format. Last year Beneteau took it a step further, offering three very different versions of its new Flyer 6 model, each with its own unique appeal. It worked well, so well in fact that there are two new members of the Flyer family this year, following a similar vein. The Flyer 5 is a smaller craft available in two model lines, whilst the boats you see here are the three versions of the bigger brother Flyer 7. All are based on the latest ‘Airstep 2’ development of Beneteau’s stepped hull. Featuring two hull steps designed to break surface tension at speed and therefore cut drag, it has a sharp forefoot to soften the ride into a head sea but broadens out to flatter aft sections, aiding stability and gaining space. Cleverly, Beneteau has managed to segue this pointy front into a surprisingly square bow at deck level, and as you’ll see from the photographs they’ve made it look a lot more elegant than it sounds. It also imbues the range with a distinctive brand identity that mirrors the smaller Flyer models. But the chief benefit is the amount of deck space it bestows on the boat by holding the wide beam well forward, and that’s the key to these three different, but equally spacious, models… SPORTdeck This is the sporty one, akin to a conventional bow rider sportsboat. The layout is simple, a bench seat back aft, console either side behind a dark tinted perspex wind deflector (helm to starboard) and a swivel bucket seat for the helmsman with back to back seats on the port side. In the bow section a pair of wide longitudinal seats port and starboard have comfy backrests against the front of the consoles. But the cleverness in all three models lies in the detail. The rear bench folds out to create a large sunpad at the back. And take a look at the storage cubby lid in the port-side console – it’s upholstered. The backrest that divides the port-side back-to-back seats cantilevers forward to create a terrific sunpad, that lid forming part of the backrest. Beneteau have even squeezed a heads under the port console accessed by lifting the bow seat. It’s not the most inviting loo in the world, but when you’ve got to go – it’ll be a godsend. This then, is the sporty one. Stow your wake boards on the optional tower and head out for a day of watersports. SUNdeck The converting rear bench is the same as the SPORTdeck, but further forward everything changes. On this model the helm and navigator have a bucket seat apiece, adjustable for height and reach (although the helm seat doesn’t slide back far enough to give the longer of leg enough knee space when seated – lift the bolster and stand instead). There’s an almost-vertical heavily tinted screen wrapped by a useful grab rail and a dark grey centre instrument console big enough to

house a navigation screen. To port a pair of chunky steps give rise to the completely flat and slightly inset foredeck laid out with a large cushion – this, then, is the sun-deck of its nomenclature. And what it means is that there’s room beneath for a surprisingly useful cuddy cabin. The Flyer 6 offers a similar arrangement but with room for just a bed with a loo beneath. The extra height and beam gifted by the additional metre in length transform this space in the Flyer 7, giving room for a dinette, a galley area and even a small separate heads. Hull windows do their bit to banish the claustrophobia of the smaller boat too. On the 6 you could camp, on this boat you can weekend away.

SPACEdeck So what if the centre console appeals but you never plan on sleeping aboard? Well then the SPACEdeck is for you (and for me actually, it is my favourite of the three). Now you have the aft seat of the SPORT and the centre console of the SUN, but with a cockpit that extends right to the bow. It means you can walk comfortably around the edge of the whole boat – terrific for fishing or just making close quarters manoeuvring that bit easier. The vertical screen gives you more protection than the SPORT, and the sliding perspex door of the SUN remains, giving access to a massive dry storage space and a sea toilet that’s far more usable than climbing into the locker on the SPORT.

MARINA REVIEW On the SUNdeck the helm and navigator have a bucket seat each

With the engine options on offer, you can really customise the Flyer 7 into a boat that suits every whim

THE DETAIL Storage on these boats is everywhere. All three models benefit from a massive gas-strut assisted lifting floor section at the aft end of the cockpit. The SPORTdeck adds a full length underfloor locker that reaches from bow to stern, perfect for wake boards and water skis as well as more space beneath the forward seating. The SPACEdeck has its huge dry storage area beneath the console whilst the SUNdeck has space for fenders next to the console and more lockers in the cabin. So those are the differences, but what about the similarities? Well, the great news is that underpinning all three of these deck layouts is a genuinely capable hull. I drove all three versions with the variety of engines on offer (a single 250hp, single 300hp and twin 150hp). All ride softly and keep the spray to an absolute minimum; you’ve got to do something really crazy like jump the wake of an MC5 at over 30 knots to get any spray on board. Go on, ask me how I know… Cornering is calm and capable, although there is a fair bit of prop slip with the single 250hp – I’m inclined to put that down to the set up, though: Beneteau didn’t have time to fully tune the boats before letting us hooligans loose. In all other respects the 250hp suits the boat well; strong acceleration, a comfortable mid 20 knot cruise and a 34 knot top end. You’d be very happy with the package provided you never drove a twin 150hp example. If the 250hp gives you everything you need then the twin 150hp gives you everything you want. It adds an extra layer to the experience – harder acceleration, an easy 30-plus knot cruise and a top end that stretches past 40. Oddly, given the extra weight and drag of twins, it was faster even than the equally powerful single

300hp which topped out at 39, and they turn the family friendly Flyer 7 into a banzai machine. VERDICT The joy of the Flyer 7 is its Transformer-like ability to be the boat you want it to be. Three distinct versions, single or twin engines, fast or very fast and a plethora of optional extras allow you to focus on exactly what you need from boating and then fine tune it toward what you really want.

ENJOY A SAFE TRIP ABROAD THIS HIS SUMMER WIT WITH WI TH HT TIPS IPS FROM INSURANCE EXPERTS NAVIGATORS & GENERAL

P

aul Emery, Head of Navigators & General, one of the UK’s leading boat insurers, vividly recalls the pride he felt upon completing his first Channel crossing. He says: “It’s an enormous milestone in your boating career and something to be celebrated!” ‘Passage planning’ was what prudent mariners would do historically, however it is now required by UK law to have a passage plan. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has guidance notes for this and expects mariners to take into account the voyage, vessel, crew, weather, tide and any other relevant factors that may have an influence on the trip. As long as you have prepared properly, you will have one of the most memorable adventures of your life that’s sure to leave you with a huge sense of achievement. The team at Navigators & General have identified some top tips for those crossing to Europe for the first time and for making the most of their “Elbe – Brest” cruising ranges: n Bring a companion who has travelled the route before, especially if it is your first trip, or seek advice from those with experience about your planned route. n Make the most of the long summer days – tide permitting, set off early to give yourself the best chance of reaching your destination well before sunset. n Let family and friends know your plans and arrange to make contact at certain times. Ensure you have a plan in place if no contact is made. n Check the weather, wind patterns and tidal information for your route. n Check safety equipment, including lifejackets and flares and have life rafts and grab bags within easy reach. n Prepare for the crossing of shipping lanes

18 |

and familiarise yourself with any navigational restrictions. If you have one, use a radar system alongside visual and heading compass checks. n Research the destination harbour so you know what to expect upon arrival. Google Maps and pilot books are good tools for getting a “mind’s eye” picture to help you when you get there. n Investigate alternative destinations should you need to change course for any reason. n Check the cruising range in your insurance policy – identify how far you are planning to sail and ensure you are covered for this route and in case there are any restrictions, for example the Bay of Biscay during winter months. n Don’t be afraid to cancel your sailing plans if the weather changes unexpectedly, even if you’ve gathered your crew and made exciting plans. n Don’t forget to carry the right documentation – your passport and proof of liability cover are essential for your voyage. n Further advice can be obtained from the Royal Yachting Association website – rya.org.uk

RELAX – YOU’RE IN SAFE HANDS Navigators & General have more than 90 years’ experience and a network of surveyors throughout Europe. An insurance policy with Navigators & General could protect you against a number of risks you might encounter on your journey – from weather damage to theft or injury risks to the boat and occupants. Navigators & General also have excellent contacts among the best repair yards operating on the continent. Therefore, in the unlikely event that something should go wrong with your boat during your voyage, you will have piece of mind that you are leaving it in safe hands. Navigators & General can also speak to a surveyor to deal with any problems, so language barriers don’t become an issue.

0 SUPPORTING CUSTOMERS OVERSEAS Recently a third-party vessel sailing through the Channel Islands caught fire at its destination marina in France and, as a result, the rising debris and smoke caused severe damage to a number of boats moored close by, one of which was insured by Navigators & General. After helping the customer with their claim, Navigators & General approached the third party to hold them liable for the damage to their customer’s boat. The claims handler was French, so Navigators & General appointed French surveyors and were able to gather estimates for repairs more quickly, achieving a faster resolution for their customer. Paul Emery says: “First time experiences can be daunting; whether it’s the first time you sail in the dark or that initial point when you can’t see land. We want to encourage and empower people to take the next step, and to have an adventure with their boat.”

UPGRADING YOUR a WANT TO GIVE YOUR BOAT A FRESH LOOK FOR THE SUMMER? MARINA CAUGHT UP WITH LUKE SMITH FROM MARINE TEAK TO SHOW YOU HOW… The Nautic Star Soft has smooth, rounded off edges and a classic design

Q A

Why should I upgrade the tables on my boat? Here at Marine Teak we like to think that we can help you to add a personal touch of design to your boat. Most boats come with white or blue plastic tables, maybe plain wood tables, but they could be damaged or in some cases you may have no table at all – that is where Marine Teak can help. We offer a wide range of teak tables that will enhance the look of your boat in the galley, cockpit or flybridge. You could soon be the owner of a table to be proud of, a table you could use and a table that looks as expensive and as elegant as your boat. Why have a boat you love and are proud of and not have a table that you feel the same way about? 24 |

SLIDING SPACESAVER TABLE

Q A

What different options are there available in terms of size, shape and materials? We currently have 16 models of table tops available, five of which are foldable making them more versatile for a broader range of uses and areas. These include the Nautic Star Circle with stationary circle and hidden steel hinges, the Nautic Star Wing with a double folding design, the Nautic Star Slide with an ingenious double sliding mechanism, the Nautic Star Balcony – which can be raised from a vertical surface with a telescopic support – and the Cube, which has a double-folding design. Each of the 16 models of table comes in between two and six different sizes, so we’ve pretty much covered all bases!

Q A

What if I can’t find a design that I like or that fits my exact needs? Marine Teak can also custom-make tables to your exact requirements. We offer a no-obligation quote – just send us your design. You could also phone us on our freephone number 0800 122 3373 to speak to one of our design team, who will be only too happy to assist you. You can choose the size, style, depth, breadth and shape. You could add curved edges, folding leaves, caulking, no caulking, fiddles or no fiddle… The choices are endless when designing your own table.

Q A

What are the tables sold by Marine Teak made from? With only the highest quality timber and the tightest grain patterns being used, each slat is individually selected during construction to ensure consistency in both the colour and the finished look. The tables are constructed around a 12mm, 16mm or 20mm thick twice-epoxied plywood board, made of hardwood, with 4mm-thick teak slats applied to the plywood surface. This is then finished off with a black caulking compound between each slat, giving the table tops a thickness of either 16mm, 20mm or 24mm, excluding the raised edges known as the ‘fiddle’. The frame is solid teak and under the table there is a reinforced epoxy coating covered by a white acrylic film.

Q A

How can I be confident that the teak used for my table was sourced responsibly? We love the environment, as do our customers. That is why all our teak comes from state-controlled sustainable teak plantations in Indonesia. The total area of the plantations has not expanded in 50 years. Through proper documentation, in accordance with the requirements of the FSC-standard, every delivery from Marine Teak can be traced back to its place of origin in the plantation where the trees were harvested and replaced with new plants. Even our deliveries to customers are CO2 neutral!

Q A

How much is a new teak table likely to set me back? Our table tops start at just £89. Delivery within the UK is free and worldwide is just £25. We don’t believe that just because this is a marine product that it should cost a fortune – not everything about boating has to be expensive!

can confidently say we are proud of our efficient service provided to our customers worldwide. We have worldwide daily collections. Delivery within the UK is expected within 24/48 hours. USA/Australia/Canada and Europe is expected in 3-6 working days. Rest of the world is expected within 2-7 working days.

Q A

As a competent DIYer, are your tables easy to install myself? Installing the tables is a simple process. If you are just replacing the table top, unscrew the current table top from your pedestal and replace with your new one. If, however, you do not currently have a table or pedestal, then we do offer a range of pedestals from static to removable ones, both height adjustable and fixed height. Different pedestals suit different uses and environments, so talk to us and we’ll help you choose.

Q A

How do I care for my new teak table – I want it to stay looking fresh for as long as possible. Teak is a tropical wood whose durability and natural protective oils ensure generations of use and elegance. It is the first choice for long-lasting marine use. We recommend giving our table tops a coat of Semco teak sealer; this doesn’t change the colour of the tables but it does provide a protective cover against any spillages, making drinks and sauces easy to wipe off. A coat of Semco once a year will keep your table looking brand new for years to come. Some customers treat their tables with gloss, teak oil, varnish or nothing at all – it really does depend on your own personal preference.

Q A

What happens if the table I like is not in stock? We ship our teak directly from Indonesia to our warehouse in the UK and the current lead time for stock is between 1-12 weeks. You can still order the table top you require and once we have it in stock we will give you a quick call and you can select the day you would like to receive it.

Q A

How do I buy from Marine Teak? Do you have a showroom where I can look at the tables? You can buy your table top and accessories online from marineteak.co.uk, or you can call 0800 122 3373 (freephone) where one of our members of staff will be happy to help. Check out the website to find out which boatshows we’ll be at this year and see our tables in person.

Q A

If I order from Marine Teak, how quickly will I have my new table? We work very hard and closely with our domestic and international carriers to minimise delays and errors and

COMBINE YOUR SAILING HOLIDAY WITH AN ICC TRAINING COURSE – NEW WITH SUNSAIL...

E

uropean countries are increasingly tightening up their regulations about what qualifications people need for yacht charters. Many holidaymakers have sailing experience, but don’t have a required qualification, like the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Day Skipper license, to hire a yacht to sail themselves with their families or friends. To avoid having to do a course separately to gain certification before the yacht charter holiday, Sunsail has come up with a new concept: n Customer books a flotilla holiday in Croatia (choice of two different flotilla routes: either Hvar or Krka in the Dalmatian Islands) starting at Agana n Sunsail provides a qualified ICC instructor/examiner on board of a Sunsail 47Premier for the entire week n Necessary training will be achieved during the week; Pass the exam at the end of the week to achieve the ICC which is required to hire and sail a yacht without having to hire a professional skipper. This combines the full social and sailing holiday experience

of a Sunsail flotilla incorporating the RYA Start Yachting Course Certificate, the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship (ENAS) online course, ICC course and exam. What’s even better, you can be learning together as a family or with friends at the same time. Prices from £2,856 for a Sunsail 47 Premier sleeping up to six (from £476 pp) for one week sailing holiday at the Hvar flotilla in Croatia including flotilla and skipper fees departing 9 May 2015 (yacht damage waiver and flights not included). Curriculum includes the RYA Start Yachting Course, RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship (ENAS) online course – to be completed prior to departing the UK – and the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) course and examination. All party members will be able to complete the Start Yachting certification; however, a maximum of three sailors will be able to sit the ICC course and examination at the end of the week. This combination offer is available for the following weeks on Hvar flotilla or Krka flotilla routes departing on 2, 9 and 16 May; 6, 13 and 27 June; 8 and 15 August; 12, 19 and 26 September 2015.

WITH THE WEATHER WARMING UP YOU’RE PROBABLY PLANNING PASSAGES YOU WANT TO MAKE THIS SUMMER. BUT DOES THAT INCLUDE READING UP ON BASIC FIRST AID OR GOING ON A COURSE? RYA NATIONAL FIRST AID ADVISOR AND YACHTMASTER EXAMINER, SARA HOPKINSON, EXPLAINS WHY IT’S ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA TO CONSIDER FIRST AID…

ccidents happen when you least expect them, but on the water the unexpected has a habit of unfolding. Boating is a relaxing, carefree experience. Yet carefree should never mean careless, and one of the dangers of chilling out is that you can take your eye off the ball. Even in calm conditions, it only takes a squall, an unexpected gybe or someone suddenly being taken ill and you could find yourself in an emergency situation.

than people do every day looking after their family,” explains Sara Hopkinson, a hugely experienced yachtswoman and the RYA’s National First Aid Advisor. “But accidents do happen and how you prioritise can be very important. This is where some first aid knowledge can help.” Here are Sara’s top tips to consider to ensure you can cope with any eventuality at sea this summer.

WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO? Being able to react appropriately to minor or moderate incidents to stop them becoming medical emergencies is often simple common sense. “Most first aid on a boat requires nothing more

LAND AND SEA ARE DIFFERENT Having some first aid knowledge is always better than none. Yet even if you have taken a land-based first aid course, the small, compact nature of boats means things such as resuscitation or the recovery position have to be adapted. The RYA First Aid course has been specifically developed for a boating environment, and one of the huge benefits is all RYA First Aid instructors have practical boating experience; they understand problems you might face. This one-day course provides a working knowledge of first aid for all those who go afloat, on inland waters or up to 60 miles from a safe haven. Topics covered include CPR, drowning, bleeding, head injuries, cold water shock and hypothermia, choosing first aid kit for the boat and getting medical assistance. It shouldn’t just be skippers who do the course. The more people who know basic first aid on a boat, the better an emergency response could be. It’s difficult for one person to navigate, use the radio and resuscitate at the same time! Find your nearest RYA first aid training centre at www.rya.org.uk/coursestraining

2

PACKING A FIRST AID KIT What would you take on an ordinary holiday, a little off the beaten track, perhaps, without easy access to a pharmacy? Big bandages, plasters, pain relief tablets, anti-inflammatories, indigestion tablets, diarrhoea medication, allergy treatment, insect bite cream? Think logically about what could happen, and consider your family’s needs. Remember prescription medications and take your glasses so that you’re able to read the instructions! When you’re packing specifically for a boat, motion sickness tablets are a must – seasickness strikes even the most experienced boaters and it’s always unexpected. It’s miserable, but can become 32 |

MAR04_ e

serious if you get severely dehydrated, so rehydration salts should be in your kit too. Likewise if you take medication that’s been expelled from your system, it could lead to other complications. High factor suncream is also compulsory because prolonged exposure to the sun, in tandem with the sun reflecting off the water, makes sunburn a certainty without it. A useful bit of kit usually demonstrated on RYA First Aid Courses is a pocket mask. Costing as little as £5-10, these make CPR easier in restricted boat spaces. Having a copy of The St John Ambulance/St Andrew’s/Red Cross First Aid Manual aboard is sensible too. The book used on the RYA First Course, it’s excellent for checking symptoms and treatment.

3

DITCH THE PHONE Always use VHF radio to get medical advice or help afloat. In a ‘999 situation’, press the Distress Alert button and send a Mayday. The Distress Alert will send the GPS position, saving valuable time. A mobile phone isn’t nearly as good; reception can fail or the battery can run out in the middle of getting help. Using VHF means the coastguard can co-ordinate the incident response, leaving you and/or your crew to concentrate on the casualty. They can get medical advice from a doctor, and if required, call for a helicopter or lifeboat, escort your boat into a marina and arrange for an ambulance.

25/06/2015 1 :51

MARINA TECH Being on radio also means other nearby boats can hear, and may be able to help. On a phone, you’re just one white boat in the middle of a very big sea.

4

BE AWARE OF COLD WATER SHOCK Even if it’s 30°C and sunny, cold water shock is a danger. The water temperature off the UK can be as low as 5°C in February and rarely rises above 18°C in a good summer. The initial reaction from falling into water is cold shock. The blood vessels in the skin constrict and increase the blood flow back to the heart. This, together with an increased heart rate and hydrostatic squeeze from the water, raises blood pressure dramatically, potentially leading to cardiac arrest or stroke in susceptible individuals. Even in a fitter casualty the inability to breath-hold and a phase of rapid, uncontrollable breathing may lead to the inhalation of water and drowning. Getting a casualty out of the water is the priority; then an awareness of hyperthermia treatment is paramount. Even mild hyperthermia – which can happen just by sitting out on deck in the cold – is a risk, so know what to look out for and how to react.

5

ALWAYS DO SOMETHING In a desperate emergency when resuscitation is required, most people worry that they can’t remember the latest method of CPR, but the Resuscitation Council advise is in all cases it’s better to do something rather than nothing. In serious situations be persistent too. There are some extraordinary cases of people surviving through the prolonged CPR efforts of a team – another reason it’s important to have more than one person on a boat trained as a first aider. Typically on a boat it will be groups of friends and families, people who know how each other well. If someone starts behaving out of character, act on it. Boating shouldn’t be stressful, and thankfully serious incidents are rare. But getting to grips with basic first aid will ensure everyone on board will be in good hands should the unexpected occur.

E

veryone has an increasing need for reliable communications, whether on land or on the water. Unfortunately, the solutions that work on land don’t work at sea, and in the past satellite communication was an expensive amenity that was out of the reach of most small vessel owners. Companies like Intellian have done much to change the industry, making satellite comms options that are tailored to the needs of the leisure user and accessible in terms of pricing and ease of use. Paul Comyns, Intellian VP Global Marketing, answers some of the most frequently asked questions about internet access on board….

Q

There are several ways to access the internet onboard a vessel. Could you explain the advantages that a satellite communication service offers? Because cables obviously aren’t an option for vessels, all internet access is either via radio (this includes your mobile and WiFi hotspots) or satellite. Satellite communications offer significant

A

advantages over radio forms of internet connectivity, the main ones being increased range from shore and consistent coverage, but of course there is also no need to worry about network roaming charges. And with satellite technology the connection is dedicated to the vessel, rather than sharing a WiFi connection, which provides a consistent speed and reliable performance whether you are offshore or entering a marina.

Q A

What are the options available to leisure users of satellite comms services? There is a maritime satellite communications service for everybody who spends time on the water, but care should be taken when selecting the services and equipment in order to ensure the best pricing and experience. There is one significant decision that should be made at the onset: do you need to receive large amounts of data, or just the occasional email? For large amounts of data a fixed bandwidth service is best because you will pay the same amount every month and you’re only limited

by the speed of the connection. For small amounts of data you could opt for a ‘pay per megabit of data downloaded’ service. This type of service is great for the occasional email and small file download, such as weather data updates, but is not recommended for large amounts of data as costs can very quickly skyrocket!

Q A

Where does Intellian fit into the equation?

Intellian has designed and manufactured satellite communication systems for all sizes of vessels, and all data speeds. For smaller users the FleetBroadband systems work globally and ensure you are always connected in a cost-effective manner. Intellian’s FleetBroadband products are some of the simplest and smallest communications products in the marine industry today. In contrast, VSAT antenna systems allow for much higher broadband speeds and Intellian VSATs deliver the industry’s lowest total cost of ownership in this sector. Looking to the near future, the new Inmarsat Global Xpress (GX) network is set to be the first high-speed broadband network to span the world, and in the maritime sector Intellian is the world’s first manufacturer to receive type approval for the supply of terminals for this network.

Q A

There are other providers, so what benefits are there to choosing an Intellian terminal? Intellian systems offer cost-effective and reliable service with access to a global network of more than 300 dealers and trained service technicians in over 45 countries around the world. The entire Intellian range is designed with the user in mind: with the ease of installation, operation and maintenance all optimised. Intellian provides its customers with an industry leading three-year parts and workmanship guarantee and a one-year labour warranty, ensuring peace of mind with your hardware investment. Intellian also provides a range of matching TV antenna solutions, so being connected also means you can watch satellite TV news wherever you are. With Intellian’s unrivalled experience in satellite communications, you can be confident of both the equipment quality and the support behind it.

Q A

How would you go about purchasing a satellite communication service? With so many options available there are a number of questions that you should consider, the first being: how much data do I really need? Satellite data can get expensive and streaming services are often just too costly to be viable. However, checking text-based emails and downloading the occasional manual or document can be cost-effective and enable you to stay connected to business and family contacts. The second question should be: where am I going to be using my boat? Satellite services are offered by many different providers, just like mobile phones, and some have better coverage than others in specific regions, some offer better services for leisure owners, so you need to check them all out thoroughly. There are some helpful comparison charts for assessing the various options and determining the appropriate

system for your use on the Intellian website, intelliantech.com. Your local dealer will also be able to assist you in the selection of the correct solution. To locate your nearest dealer, please visit intelliantech.com/Dealers

Q A

 Whether you want to stream movies and TV or simply check emails, there’s a satellite system to suit your needs

What about the installation process?

Intellian satellite antenna systems need to be mounted in a position on your boat from which they are able to ‘see’ the satellites. From the antenna there are two cables to a small ‘down below unit’ that connects to your computer or WiFi unit. Intellian products are purposefully designed so that you can expect quick, pain-free installation to get vessels connected swiftly.

Q A

Is maintenance costly and time-consuming? All satellite communication systems from Intellian are designed so that there is no user maintenance required. The Aptus software and app allows for simple system monitoring from onboard and from a remote location, providing an easy way to check system performance and run self-check procedures. This is a significant benefit as it allows the service provider to take care of the antennas remotely.

CAN THE MOST SUCCESSFUL OLYMPIC SAILOR OF ALL TIME BRING THE OLDEST INTERNATIONAL SPORTING TROPHY IN THE WORLD BACK TO THE UK? MARINA TALKS TO SIR BEN AINSLIE ABOUT HIS STUNNING PORTSMOUTH HEADQUARTERS, HIS NEW EX-FORMULA 1 CEO AND HOW HE PLANS TO WIN THE 35TH AMERICA’S CUP…

W

ith a state-of-the-art Portsmouth headquarters, an ex-Formula 1 team principal as CEO and the most successful Olympic sailor of all time at the helm, not to mention the backing of the future Queen, could this be our best chance yet of bringing the America’s Cup – the Auld Mug – home to Britain for the first time in its 164-year history? Sir Ben Ainslie certainly hopes so. In fact, it would be the realisation of one of his greatest dreams. “For us in sailing and me personally, there’s no bigger challenge than putting together and running an America’s Cup team,” Ainslie said, speaking on behalf of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation – a charity set up to honour the life and legacy of his friend who died in a sailing accident in 2013. “That’s what gets me up in the morning. It is a huge challenge, a huge responsibility.” The America’s Cup World Series will take place in Portsmouth on 25th and 26th July, followed by Gothenburg in August and Bermuda in October. Bermuda will also host the signature regatta in 2017, which will see the 62ft wing-sailed AC62 catamaran ‘flying’ above the water on hydrofoils at speeds near 50mph. Ainslie was an integral part of the Oracle Team USA team that won the America’s Cup last year – something that has inspired him to set up his own team, BAR, and try for the cup himself. “It is such an historic event,” Ainslie told the Press Association. “It is the one thing we’ve never won in Britain. It is the oldest international sporting trophy in the world, so for us it is the equivalent of going out and winning the Tour de France for the first time. It is a huge deal. It would be very, very special.”

“IT IS THE OLDEST INTERNATIONAL SPORTING TROPHY IN THE WORLD, SO FOR US IT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF GOING OUT AND WINNING THE TOUR DE FRANCE FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT IS A HUGE DEAL. IT WOULD BE VERY, VERY SPECIAL.” SIR BEN AINSLIE

Sir Ben’s bid has certainly attracted some big names. The Duchess of Cambridge, a keen sailor herself, has thrown her weight behind the campaign by becoming Royal Patron of the 1851 Trust, a charity that aims to promote sailing to the under 25s and inspire a new generation to take up the sport. Plus BAR have just added a new CEO into the mix – former McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh. “I’ve been on boats, I’ve owned some boats, but I’m not a sailor, I’ve not been near any of this before and I find that quite an exciting challenge,” he said. Ironically, this coming summer was to have been his first experience of sailboats. “I thought I was in retirement, so I had arranged a sailboat for the summer. It’s a local boat to my home in France on the Ile de Ré near La Rochelle. Sadly, I had to ring the guy and say I don’t think I’m going to be down there very much this year.” As Marina goes to press, the new headquarters on the Camber in Portsmouth has just been unveiled. Created with £7.5million of Government funding, it’s a place Whitmarsh believes will be instrumental to the task at hand. “It will do a lot Issue 4 |

THE AMERICA’S CUP FACT BOX n First offered by Queen Victoria in 1851, the inaugural race was run around the Isle of Wight. n A boat from New York named America claimed the prize and the cup was renamed in its honour. n Only four nations have ever won the cup in more than 150 years. n Nine contests for the cup took place before the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. n There is no prize for second place.

STOP PRESS As Marina went to press, Land Rover announced their partnership with BAR in the America’s Cup bid, and Land Rover engineers will now be supporting the project with their expertise. “We are delighted to have Land Rover as our Title Partner and Exclusive Innovation Partner,” said Ben Ainslie. “Together we will develop race-winning technology for our America’s Cup Class boat.”

of things for us. It will give us the space to operate, it will co-locate everyone and it will help build our identity,” he says. “But I think it’s also a statement of intent. When anyone arrives at the new HQ, the state of mind that I think it will produce from its location, the architecture, the scale of the undertaking, and the seriousness of the investment will then be reinforced by the team of people that they will meet as they pass over the threshold. It’s going to be an extraordinary boost in anyone’s belief in this team.” Whitmarsh’s new role will see him work once again with engineer Adrian Newey, who is now head of the BAR partner Red Bull Advanced Technologies. They were a formidable team during the nine years they spent together at Maclaren and Ainslie is hoping some of that magic can be rekindled. “I’m delighted that Martin is joining us,” says Ainslie. “When we first started to put together the plan for BAR, McLaren were one of the aspirations. So it’s particularly appropriate to have one of the original architects of that model as our new CEO.” Tickets for The America’s Cup World Series, Portsmouth (ACWSUK) are on sale now. Go to ticketmaster.co.uk/ ACWSPortsmouth to secure your place.

BEN LIPPIETT

MARINA MANAGER HASLAR MARINA, GOSPORT “There has been a real buzz around Gosport following the arrival of BAR to Old Portsmouth. Gosport has a long association with the best in ocean racing and everyone is now thrilled to add to this a team in Portsmouth Harbour to challenge for the America’s Cup. Haslar Marina, in partnership with the Gosport Marine Scene, are doing everything it can to help support the events in Portsmouth from the Gosport peninsula. The lion’s share of visitor marina berthing and marine trade sit on the western side of the harbour, so we are delighted to be able to contribute to this exciting event and help Team Origin deliver an event to remember.”

“Gosport’s marine businesses have already benefited considerably from the build-up of Sir Ben Ainslie’s new stable and this looks set to continue as we get closer to the 2015 America’s Cup World Series and on into 2016. Gosport Marine Scene (the marine business network) spent time after the selection of Portsmouth as the BAR base working with them and the ACWS event organisation, to ensure that they are aware of the immense range of services and expertise for sailing and small commercial vessels on this side of the harbour. A range of those services is being accessed directly and indirectly, not only by BAR and the other teams, but by the support teams and of course the supporters and spectators. As one indication, it appears that if visiting boats haven’t already booked their berths in Gosport’s three big marinas, they may have to join the waiting list. Crew houses and other accommodation are at a premium – if there are vacancies to be found. We expect the excellent waterside eateries to be packed for the duration of the four-day event in addition to providing some of the catering on the Southsea site. Support ribs and small vessels, some of them chartered in Gosport, will be stacking, mooring or slipping here and the fuel berth will be topping up supplies frequently. In spite of the on-water space pressures, spectator boats, including the new ship in the Gosport Ferry fleet, will be providing grandstand views afloat. The regular ferry services will be dealing with extra demand from the thousands of spectators crossing the harbour. The boatyards, slips and hoists will be working flat out to cope with demand, while the sailmakers, shipwrights and riggers should not expect too much sleep. To make sure the visitors know what they can find on the sheltered western shore of the harbour, Gosport Marine Scene with the Borough Council has produced a comprehensive pocket guide and map in time for the World Series. Just a few weeks before, Gosport Marine Scene holds its free Festival, aimed at giving hundreds of young people a taste of being on the water and an intelligent understanding of the racing. In short, the decision to create the Ben Ainslie Racing base in the magic half kilometre at the harbour mouth, and to hold the two World Series here, is turning out to be a real stimulus to marine business. We’re working to help Sir Ben bring the Cup back home!” Issue 4 |

APPRENTICES ARE THE LIFE BLOOD OF THE MARINE INDUSTRY, CULTIVATING THE STARS OF THE FUTURE. MARINA CATCHES UP WITH SOME OF THE LATEST TALENT AND REVEALS HOW THE ADVANTAGES OF OFFERING APPRENTICESHIPS WORK BOTH WAYS…

ow easy is it to start a career in the marine industry? Thanks to a new raft of apprenticeships from some of the UK’s major marine manufacturers, it’s now more achievable than you might think. Back in March, the British Marine Federation joined forces with its members to celebrate all the inspirational apprentices within the marine industry during National Apprenticeship Week 2015. In a male-dominated industry it’s not just the boys who are getting a look in. It has also become clear that more women than ever before are taking up apprenticeships in the marine industry with BMF members Sunseeker International, Princess Yachts, Green Marine and Pendennis all currently having female apprentices within their workforces. “I would definitely recommend this apprenticeship because it opens so many opportunities, allowing you to gain so many practical skills whilst going into great detail and understanding about marine systems,” says Olivia Richards-Smith, a current Sunseeker apprentice studying an advanced apprenticeship (level 3) in Marine Engineering and currently fulfilling a placement on Sunseeker’s Test Team. “My work colleagues, college tutor and the apprenticeship coordinator have all been really supportive to help me gain the qualifications and open up great career prospects. If you’re looking for a career in the marine sector this scheme really sets you up for your future no matter what route you’re going to follow.” Many companies are committed to taking on more apprentices, including BMF members such as the Royal National Lifeboat

Institution (RNLI) which is on the hunt for mechanics, electricians, painters and boatbuilders to take up six apprenticeship placements at its lifeboat centre in Dorset; A.S.A.P. Supplies recently took on two apprentices; and Green Marine is actively looking for four apprentices this year among many other companies. Apprenticeships may not always lead to a job but the balance is tipping. For example, over 70% of those who were apprentices at Pendennis Shipyard are now in its permanent workforce – some in senior trade manager positions. “These apprenticeships not only provide Pendennis Shipyard with the next generation of superyacht employees, but provide an opportunity for local young people to build a long-term career in a fascinating and highly skilled industry,” says Mike Carr, Managing Director at Pendennis Shipyard. “Not only does the Pendennis scheme train individuals in yacht fabrication, joinery, paint and engineering skills, but it also creates rounded individuals who are a valuable asset to each project team. Each year it is a pleasure to see new youngsters arrive at the start of their course, and to celebrate the graduation of the final year apprentices as we welcome them into the Pendennis family.” Apprenticeships are all about equipping the marine industry in a positive and sustainable way, as Richard Acland, CEO of Green Marine Ltd explains: “Green Marine is working to help inspire and train the next generation of innovative, world-class boat builders. We want to ensure that our apprentices are the best, brightest and most qualified for the future.”

DANIELLE THOMAS

Apprentice Composite Boat Builder & Laminator MARINA: What prompted you to take up an apprenticeship at Green Marine? DT: I’ve always had a passion for sailing; from a young age it’s been a major part of my life and I love all kinds of boats from dinghies to tall ships. I came to Green Marine on a tour with my college, because I knew I wanted to work with boats. I quickly realised it was the best place for me to become an apprentice. MARINA: How has the apprenticeship helped you so far? DT: As my first job, this apprenticeship has really helped me develop a number of skills, from self-discipline to time management. It has also helped me improve my people skills, enabled me to learn the science behind composite boat building and gain more knowledge of the marine industry. MARINA: What are you currently most proud of achieving whilst on your apprenticeship? DT: Having only been an apprentice at Green Marine for six months, I’ve not yet had the chance to be part of a complete boat build, however I am very proud of the fact that I worked as part of the team constructing the new deck mould for a world -renowned sailor’s boat. (You also have to be good at keeping trade secrets in this role!)

MARINA: What do you do on an average day at work? DT: In this role, no two days are ever the same. I’m constantly learning. Of course there are some tasks that I frequently do, including measuring and cutting materials, joining and gluing materials together, marking out dimensions, preparing work surfaces and laminating. MARINA: Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? DT: I’m looking forward to completing my apprenticeship and becoming a composite boat builder at Green Marine. MARINA: Would you recommend this apprenticeship to other college students? DT: Definitely! It’s varied, and at Green Marine we are constantly finding ways to build better, quicker and more efficient boats – whether that’s using lighter and stronger new composite materials, 3D printing or using laser measuring devices, I get to stay at the forefront of new technology. MARINA: If anything, what does it mean to you to be a woman in the marine industry? DT: Right from the start, I knew that I wouldn’t be working with lots of other women. But to be honest, it’s not something that bothers me, because this job is something I really want to do. Being passionate and ambitious is not something that is gender-specific, I’d like to work my way up the company and prove that girls can do anything that boys can. I’d love to be a role model and encourage more women to join the marine industry.

FAST FACTS n Since 2010, over 2 million apprenticeships have started in England. n Apprenticeships are available in over 170 industries including aerospace, fashion, broadcast media and finance – with 1,500 job roles available. n Women now take up 55% of apprenticeships. n 90% of apprentices stay in employment after finishing their apprenticeship (includes 2% who become self-employed). n 71% of apprentices stay with the same employer. n 82% said their apprenticeship had improved their ability to do the job and 79% said that their career prospects had improved.

MARINA PEOPLE

OLIVIA RICHARDS-SMITH Apprentice Marine Engineer MARINA: What prompted you to take up an apprenticeship at Sunseeker? OR-S: I have always enjoyed working hands-on and learning practical skills. Before taking up this apprenticeship I had previously worked alongside my dad, who is a car mechanic. I did my work experience in a car garage, but I wanted to gain experience in a more unique and specialist trade. I felt that an apprenticeship was the right route for me to follow, and felt that the most successful way for me to learn was to work manually and learn through experience. I had heard of Sunseeker a long time before I began my application and felt that it was a great opportunity to kick-start my career. MARINA: How has the apprenticeship helped you? OR-S: From day one I have been learning practical skills and gaining huge amounts of knowledge both at college and through experiences at work. This goes from learning how to use specific tools to being able to understand full systems throughout the boat I am working on. Before beginning the apprenticeship I knew very little about what is involved in being a marine engineer, and as I come to the end of college-based work I can say I feel confident that I understand engine systems including exhaust, fuel and lubrication systems. When it comes to the boat building and working on the line, I think I have made sufficient progress in my understanding of working efficiently and effectively while preventing defects in the process of the build. Although there is so much more for me to learn, I no longer feel the need to ask so many questions because I am beginning to answer them myself using what I have learned, not only technically but also about the marine industry. I have also gained skills when it comes to working efficiently alone and as part of a team. MARINA: What do you do on an average day at work? OR-S: When participating in an apprenticeship you tend to learn the majority of trades within the company, which makes describing an average day quite difficult! On a day to day basis, I would say the main task was learning, and taking in everything you can. I couldn’t tell you a day when I have done the same thing twice because every boat is

unique and so is every trade. Although there are build specifications to follow, each boat varies in its own individual ways. At the moment I am working as part of the test team and as part of each test we have an IPC (In Process Control) to follow, which basically states the jobs needed to be signed off as completed. This IPC involves checking bilge systems, alarm systems, lighting systems, steering systems and all other systems on the vessel. This operation varies depending on the boat’s specification. Other tasks involve getting the boat safely into the water and organising going out to sea and doing more tests whilst on the water. We also deal with the issues (if there are any) on the boat, for example parts which we may be waiting for or minor defects which may have occurred throughout the build. MARINA: What are you currently most proud of achieving whilst on your apprenticeship? OR-S: I feel that my biggest achievement at Sunseeker would be the fact that I have passed all of my exams. I found the exams a challenge, but have worked hard (with the help of my work colleagues, college tutor and the apprenticeship coordinator). Other than that, I would say that my best achievement would be the amount I have learnt throughout my apprenticeship and how my understanding of marine systems has developed. MARINA: Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time? OR-S: Once I have completed my apprenticeship I would like to gain more experience within Sunseeker, maybe progress through the company and gain knowledge of other marine systems and work on different boats. I feel that this would benefit me hugely as eventually I would like to work abroad crewing as an engineer on a Sunseeker, experiencing the vessels on the water and working to maintain somebody’s dream. I enjoy working on the tools and hope to keep learning more and more and become a successful marine engineer. MARINA: Would you recommend this apprenticeship? OR-S: I would definitely recommend this apprenticeship as it opens so many opportunities, whether you want to work your way up within the company or want to fulfil a job working outside on the boats. It allows you to gain so many practical skills whilst going into great detail and understanding about marine systems. I feel that this apprenticeship gives you qualifications to open up great career prospects and sets you up for your future no matter the route you’re going to follow.

TIM TREGEAR Project Manager

Tim Tregear completed his apprenticeship at Pendennis Shipyard in 2006… MARINA: What attracted you to the idea of an apprenticeship at Pendennis? TT: I joined Pendennis to be part of a growing team who work in a field within which my personal interests lie. I was also attracted to the apprenticeship program as it gave me great career opportunities, as well as a wage whilst I trained. I am inspired by providing a first-class service to our clients, there is a huge level of satisfaction in delivering a well-executed project to a happy customer. As manager of Pendennis Palma I was very much the face of the company in Mallorca, which involved meeting clients both new and existing. Now as Project Manager in Falmouth I am involved once

the work list is agreed and contracts signed which is when I start the planning process. I am then responsible for delivering the completed project back to the client on schedule and within the expected budget. This involves organising the logistics between a whole host of subcontract parties and our own in house teams, as well as working closely with the owners’ representatives to manage the budgets accordingly. MARINA: What advice would you offer to would-be apprentices? TT: Apprenticeships are a fantastic method of further education. To begin with, I would advise anyone considering an apprenticeship to think very carefully about the field in which they wish to work. Once this has been determined, select a company which has a well-structured program with a proven track record. It’s really important to remember that an apprentice always starts on the bottom run of the ladder, which can sometimes be frustrating. But by earning the respect of your mentors you will maximise their input into your learning! Issue 4 |

REVIEW

I

’ll let you in to a (not very) secret – the Princess 43, isn’t. 43 feet I mean. Despite being a direct replacement for the Princess 42, and in spite of the nomenclature, a quick peek at the specification sheet reveals the truth about this space ship, the LOA is a remarkable 47ft 6in. Which neatly answers the question on the lips of everyone that knew and loved the 42 (and there are plenty of them, with over 300 built over its 10-year tenure). Namely, how has so much extra space been created? And it is a fair question because it is everywhere! The master cabin forward has noticeably more floor space and headroom. The en suite now sports a proper separate shower cubicle rather than the rotating screen of old. And there’s another one in the day heads, itself en suite to a guest cabin that feels a size bigger and features the option of beds that slide together at the touch of a button. Move back through the boat and it quickly becomes clear that this surfeit of space isn’t at the expense of the rest of the accommodation. The half level galley – one step up from the lower level, two down from the saloon, keeping it separate yet social – has expanded into a u-shape, finding space for a dishwasher under the cooker and a useful washer/dryer beneath the steps. The saloon itself mirrors the 42 with a big comfortable curve of sofa behind the raised double helm and a two seater opposite twixt galley and drinks cabinet. The saloon table neither folds nor drops, but despite appearances it is free-standing, so you can move it about (or swap it with the base of the smaller sofa, cunningly sized to nestle into the larger one creating an occasional double). The overriding impression is one of quiet class and quality. Lit by the latest flush fit LED lighting, the beautifully finished wood is available in Seritina Cherry or Light Oak as standard, both with high gloss or satin finishes, or upgrade to American Walnut or Rovere Oak at extra cost. Fabrics are soft and silky to the touch, and backlighting of areas like the drinks locker add an extra dimension. It feels an expensive luxury motor yacht – the advantage of buying a boat at the bottom of a range that sweeps past 100 feet and shows no sign of slowing – every inch a Princess. It seems churlish to criticise, but it wouldn’t be a boat test if

I didn’t so I’ll point to the lack of dimmers: you get full beam or nothing. And while a few hand holds about the interior might spoil the penthouse ambience, ultimately this is still a boat. A complete lack of fiddles to flat surfaces means that anything you put down is likely to have an urgent appointment with the floor should excessive passing wash toss the boat too violently – damn you gravity! In the teak soled cockpit you now get two transom gates, the seating curling round a large table atop a thick stainless steel base– fabulous for dining and folding in half should you just want to relax. There’s an even bigger alfresco eating area up top on the flybridge, where the aft end is given over completely to a large table while the forward end sports a double helm with forward facing L-shaped seating area adjacent that infills to

a sunpad. It’s a far better solution than the sideways C-shape forward and sunpad aft of the 42 which really lacked forward facing crew seating. It is, then, a Princess 42 turned up to 11 – the ultimate evolution. Bigger, more intelligently configured, better laid out and with a commensurate lift in quality and ambience. It’s a similar story out on the water. The 42 was always a great sea boat – the new 43 however is simply brilliant. Co-incidentally, both times I’ve trialled the new 43 have been on the tail end of recent storms, the malevolent slate grey seas off Plymouth churned into a boiling maelstrom of confused swell and rolling waves. In these conditions the 43 really proves its pedigree. While many recent models from other manufacturers sacrifice sea-keeping at the altar of accommodation,

IT IS THE ULTIMATE EVOLUTION. BIGGER, MORE INTELLIGENTLY CONFIGURED, AND WITH A LIFT IN AMBIENCE

The extra inches translate into a really luxurious living space

MARINA REVIEW

 The galley now has room for a dishwasher and even a very useful washer/ dryer

the Princess proves that (interior handholds aside) this is still a boat first and foremost, putting its head down and shouldering through the turbulent seas with an impassive softly damped big yacht ride that belies its size. Careful with the trim tabs though, it doesn’t want a lot of bow down. Too much tab results in a frankly spectacular bout of wave piercing. Great fun, but hurling far more solid water at the windscreens than the large pantograph wipers can cope with, so unless you intend to fly by instruments, wind up the tabs and let it find its own balance. In fact, the only areas of this supersized Princess 42 left untouched are the engines. The largest Volvo Penta D6 motors are the same 435hp each as its predecessor, the larger D9 motors unavailable, perhaps due to being almost double the weight of the smaller D6. As a result, where a twin D6-435 equipped 42 would nudge 30 knots, the 43 is all out of options at 28. And whilst the resultant cruising speed in the mid20s is perfectly adequate, for some owners ‘adequate’

is simply not part of their vocabulary. For 2015 models, Princess now have the answer. Cummins QSB 6.7-550 engines are a full 1.2 litre larger capacity than the Volvo D6 motors, power – as their name suggests – up by over 100hp. These are the engines to make the 43 fly. Peaking briefly at 31 knots on test, these motors should restore the genuine 30 knot reach of the 42. But it’s further down the rev range that these brand new British engines excel. That extra capacity results in effortless grunt, punting the boat quickly onto the plane and adding an extra layer of control in big seas, allowing the helmsman to keep the speed down yet power the boat forcefully over the biggest swells. Whilst the standard twin Volvo Penta D6-435 option will prove perfectly sufficient for most owners, the small premium (about 6%) for these new Cummins diesels will ensure that the performance of the Princess 43 matches the comprehensive lift that has been wrought over the 42.

 Wind up the tabs and you can enjoy a splash-free ride in the lap of luxury

V

olvo is a brand name synonymous with innovation in the marine industry – from IPS to the new touch-screen glass cockpit reviewed in issue two of Marina, Volvo Penta has remained at the technological forefront of engine, propulsion and control development in the leisure and commercial sectors for over a century. With a strong focus on safety, ease of use combined with the economy and reliability afforded by an extensive range of marine diesel- and petrol-powered engines it comes as no surprise to find that many boat owners place their trust in the Volvo brand. This same philosophy is carried over into Volvo’s road car development and nowhere is this better represented than the excellent XC60, a car packed with innovative driver-focussed aids and highly developed engine technology to ensure safe, comfortable and controllable performance with a choice broad enough to provide the appropriate balance between price, power and economy. The XC60 D4 we had on test came with the 181bhp four-cylinder D4 turbo diesel from the Drive-E family. This unit is currently only available in front-wheel-drive configuration so if you want, or need, allwheel-drive then you’ll have to step up to the D5 five-cylinder diesel or the supercharged and turbocharged T6 six-cylinder petrol models. Although most SUVs in this highly competitive sector are usually four-wheel-drive, opting for only two driven wheels does come with undeniable benefits and top of that list is economy. Our review car offers a claimed 62.8mpg (combined) with the six-speed manual gearbox fitted. The D4 four-cylinder diesel is also exceptionally refined and quiet, particularly when compared to the D5 unit which

can be a little harsh at higher revs and offers little in the way of increased performance – if you can live without four-wheel-drive the D4 models are probably the best choice for the majority of buyers. SAFETY COMES FIRST With a reputation build on safety it comes as no surprise that the XC60 scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test with front, side and cabin-length window airbags as standard across the range along with the excellent City Safety system, which senses a collision and prepares or even applies the brakes automatically. The D4 SE Lux Nav-spec XC60 supplied for our review is a generously appointed car, additionally benefitting from Xenon headlights, an excellent sat-nav coupled to a five-inch widescreen display (which also controls the infotainment system), and electrically operated tailgate, parking sensors and dual-zone climate control. Our review car was also fitted with several extras from the options list including keyless entry and starting, laminated security windows, heated front seats and active bending Xenon headlights. Of particular note, though, was the £1,900 Driver Support Pack, which builds on the already comprehensive safety features with distance alerts displayed via red lights above the dash, audible lane departure warning, a clever system that reads road signs and displays the speed limits on the dash and a warning that illuminates a light on the inside of

Smarter, safer, cleaner and more controllable – its easy to see the parallels between Volvo’s IPS systems for the sea and the thinking behind the XC60 SUV

 Clean and uncluttered, the interior of the XC60 is quietly understated and yet wants for nothing

 Although not the largest load area, the boot space offered in the XC60 is still cavernous and, with the seats folded, completely flat

front-drive-only cars and for most drivers the benefits far outweigh this occasional slight on an otherwise extremely composed vehicle. The ride is a little firm at times although it stops short of crashy and does aid the handling, with minimal body roll considering the size. The steering is nicely weighted, however it does feel a little artificial and provides little feedback, which does limit confidence when pressing on in the bends. Given the performance available you have to remind yourself this isn’t a sporty model – treat it appropriately and it’ll reward with a comfortable, quiet and effortless drive that is perfect for eating up motorway miles where the visibility afforded by the raised driving position and the many driver safety aids remove much of the stress associated with longer-distance driving.

THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE With all the safety features taking centre stage you could be forgiven for thinking the XC60 would be a little dull and lifeless, however the D4 engine is a surprisingly willing performer. The loss of weight over the four-wheel-drive variants coupled with 400nm of torque available from just 1,750rpm results in a sprightly turn of speed that belies its size. For the most part the loss of four-wheel-drive is barely noticed, although the front wheels can sometimes break traction if the road surface is slippery or loose – though this is no worse than in other

MARINA WHEELS PRACTICALITY AND COMFORT The tall body of the XC60 makes for a spacious and airy interior with plenty of head and legroom for up to five adults. The seats are up to Volvo’s usual high standard, offering a full range of adjustments (electrically operated on our test model) and superb levels of day-long comfort and support. The SE Lux-spec vehicles also benefit from a full leather interior adding to the sense of occasion and luxury. Indeed, the XC60 has a premium feel throughout with the ergonomic dash layout making full use of the infotainment system to avoid clutter. High quality plastics and tastefully considered design features, such as the trademark floating centre console and a full LCD dashboard that changes the rendering of the clocks depending on the information options selected, with a smart animated startup when you turn the ignition on or off, add to that feel. There’s ample storage throughout with numerous cubbyholes, pockets and compartments to hide away everyday items. The boot space – offering 495 litres, extending to 1,455 litres with the rear seats folded – is generous enough for most, although far from classleading and falls short of the space offered in the Discovery Sport we reviewed in the last issue of Marina. It does, however, feature a completely flat area with the seats folded and the huge boot opening and smooth entry makes loading large objects easy. MARINA’S OPINION With competition in the luxury SUV market being so hotly contested and the big names fighting it out with increasingly opulent and highly specified vehicles, it’s easy to overlook the Volvo XC60 in favour of more ostentatious offerings. And yet the Volvo never looks out of place in the company of its competitors – it goes about its business in an understated yet confident manner, and the emphasis on safety

and economy affords it a marketing angle likely to appeal to many potential buyers. If you’re a high-mileage or a business user the XC60 makes a lot of sense with obvious financial benefits from the fantastic mpg and low CO2 figures. Smarter, safer, cleaner and more controllable, just like IPS – those familiar with the Volvo Penta’s latest innovations should feel right at home behind the wheel of the XC60.

BRISTOL HARBOUR FESTIVAL

LYME REGIS REGATTA AND CARNIVAL WEEK

FALMOUTH WEEK

This fabulous, free festival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year and features seven areas including dance, music, children’s activities, a busy on-water programme and phenomenal circus performances. Organisers have promised a packed three-day event, across a two-mile stretch of the city from Brunel’s SS Great Britain to M Shed, and from Queen Square to the city’s leafy Castle Park. On the water, hundreds of sailing vessels, from historic ships and boats to pleasure yachts and harbour ferries, will provide a colourful backdrop to Bristol’s annual celebration of its maritime heritage.

The Lyme Regis Regatta is a nine-day spectacular full of action-packed activities for the whole family. This year’s event will include gig racing, power boat rides, a junk boat race, a carnival procession, workshops, balloon races, live music and a firework display.

One of the largest sailing regattas in the South West, Falmouth Week boasts keelboats and multihulls – as well as the more traditional yachts – racing over seven days. There are also lots of activities taking place shoreside, too, and new for 2015, a Dinghy Week is being held the week after the festivities. Head to Pendennis and St Mawes Castles, St Anthony Head, Castle Drive and Pendennis Point for the best views of the action.

THE WORLD’S BEST WAKEBOARDERS SHOW OFF THEIR SKILLS IN LIVERPOOL’S ROYAL ALBERT DOCK IN THE UK’S BIGGEST WAKEBOARDING COMPETITION

T

his summer the Red Bull Harbour Reach returns to Liverpool’s Albert Dock with what promises to be the most progressive and challenging course ever created, inspired by the city’s industrial heritage. Developed by some of the UK’s top Wakeboarders, including Tim Woodhead of Industry Wake Parks, and US legend Parks Bonifay and Freddy Carter, the course will be the proving ground for the likes of James Windsor – two-time winner and reigning Red Bull Harbour Reach champion, from Australia – and top UK athletes Jonty Green and Freddy Carter. This year’s event – which is free – will be the third time Red Bull’s extreme water sport showcase will take place in the North-West landmark. Last year the festival drew more than 10,000 spectators who marvelled at the explosive stunts, jumps, rails and maritime obstacles. Wakeboarding is one of the world’s fastest-growing water sports and new wake parks are frequently popping up across the UK, with Liverpool’s Industry 1 recognised as one of the country’s flagship locations. Derived from a combination of surfing and waterskiing, using Sesistecs System 2.0 Cable System, the wakeboarders are towed along at speeds of up to 30mph and are able to jump upwards of 15m in distance.

THE PERFECT VINTAGE WITH THE SUN OUT AND REGATTA SEASON IN FULL SWING, THIS SUMMER IS A WONDERFUL TIME TO INDULGE IN A GLASS OR TWO OF SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT…

A

bottle of bubbly makes the perfect end to a long, hot day on the water, whether you’ve been busy fishing or simply enjoying the ocean breeze. Now, more than ever, there’s an array of alternatives to the old stalwarts so why not explore what England has to offer and set yourself apart from the crowd? English wines make for great summer drinking, with plenty of fruit flavour and a crisp, refreshing quality that’s hard to find anywhere else. Sparkling wines are an English speciality; they often incorporate a Champagnelike richness and complexity, but with a little more freshness – making them top of the list when it comes to making a splash! Indeed, in March this year it was a

82 |

Sussex sparkler, Wiston Estate, that launched P&O’s new cruise liner, the Britannia. In the world of wine, England is one of the smallest vineyard regions but it is punching well above its weight. In the last 15 years English sparkling wines have won some 14 trophies in global competitions – no other country has achieved this. This year alone has seen English wines scoop more Gold medals in major competitions than ever before. English wines of all styles are now readily available in supermarkets and wine merchants, on the high street or online. So show off your insider knowledge with some of our top English wines to be seen with this season…

Interboat and Intercruiser exude quality and style, as well as offering a solid build, quiet inboard engines, stable cruising qualities and unparalleled comfort. Perfect for families, extremely versatile, and ideal for socialising (as all Interboat are), the new Interboat NEO 7.0 range is widely considered to be a game changer in the boating industry, thanks to its revolutionary design that maximises space on board. Bold and unique, the NEO 7.0 platform allows buyers flexibility to customise their boat’s layout and design. There is no conventional pointed bow or side decks, ensuring optimum use of the flat cockpit deck space to allow for minimalism or maximum comfort. From the standard platform, customers can choose to add additional seats, enhanced facilities and choice of power options ranging from 27HP to 170HP, and even select a helm position. What’s more, with a bathing platform that can be made completely flat, the NEO 7.0 is also ideally placed to accommodate disability access. For those who may struggle to access a conventionally designed boat, the flexibility of the NEO platform means very few modifications need to be made to allow easy access for anyone. JOIN THE SCANDI-FASHION REVIVAL WITH THIS RETRO SAILING RAINCOAT FROM RUKKA

Y

ou might remember Rukka rainwear – the heritage brand from Finland was big in the UK in the 1970s and is enjoying something of a revival as the antithesis of modern high-tech extreme sports styling. Originally a sailing brand, Rukka rainwear has been in production for 65 years and is renowned for its durability, functionality and value for money. Made in the EU, the Rukka range is soft and comfortable to wear, and the seam-welded construction makes it totally waterproof. And if bright yellow isn’t really your colour, these coats (and matching waterproof trousers) also come in blue. See rukkarainwear.com.

Viva la

CANNES! NINA DONE REVEALS WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO STAY IN THE GLAMOROUS RIVIERA RESORT…

Q

ui li ven li vien: those who come never leave. This ancient Provençal motto perfectly captures the spirit of this uberglamorous and vibrant town. With a hint of old world charm evoking a Belle-Époque era, it is no wonder that Cannes is one of the most sought-after mooring spots in Europe. What is more, just half a mile offshore lie the exquisite Iles des Lérins, four unspoilt islands that include Ile St Marguerite – on which the Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned for 11 years – and Ile St Honorat, which has been the site of a monastery since the 5th century and today still home to Cistercian monks. Cannes enjoys a Mediterranean climate with 12 hours of sunshine during the summer months (May to September), and average temperatures of around 25-30°C, although ocean breezes keeps evenings comfortably cool.

LANDMARKS AND LAZY DAYS Days are easily and enjoyably whiled away in this most glamorous of Riviera cities. You could easily spend a couple of days wandering the charming historic quarter, Le Suquet, exploring its church, medieval castle and museum, and taking in the stunning view across the Bay of Cannes. If you feel like splashing some cash, saunter down the Boulevard de la Croisette, home to some of the biggest haute couture labels and most luxurious hotels on the French Riviera. Cannes is eminently a walk-able town however, there are a raft of transport options available, including a regular bus service and train station, both walking distance from Old Port, and taxi ranks, 96 |

!

Les Allées de la Liberté. There are also supermarkets: Carrefour and Monoprix are nearby and speciality supermarkets, as are Asian and kosher shops, catering for alternative dietary requirements. Further afield and perfect for longer day trips, must-sees are Saint Paul de Vance, a 16th century walled city in the French countryside; Grasse, the absolute holy grail of the perfume industry; and Fréjus, an ancient Roman city founded by Julius Caesar in 49BC, with an amphitheatre and aqueduct.

located at both the bus and train stations. Alternatively, you can hire a car from one of the numerous car rental hire companies operating throughout Cannes. While you’re there you simply must grab a water taxi to the Lerin islands. St Marguerite, the larger of the two islands, offers nature trails, a museum and even possesses a fortress and prison, which played host to the enigmatic Man in the Iron Mask. The monastery on the smaller island of St Honorat sells wine, honey and a liqueur called Lerina, all produced in-house by the monks. DINING – OUT AND IN There are literally hundreds of places to dine in Cannes, from chic pavement cafes to Michelin-starred restaurants, in which you can enjoy local specialities such as bouillabaisse, tapenade and salad Niçoise. Prices in the restaurants and bars do include a service charge. For shopping, rivalling the Boulevard de la Croisette, Rue d’Antibes is home to many luxurious brands, as well as the usual high street names. For local products, the pedestrianised street, Rue Maynadier, is worth a visit. But don’t dine out for every meal or you’ll miss out on some of the best Provençal gourmet treats – stock up on groceries at the open, canopied Marché Forville, a feast for the senses and overflowing with locally produced fruit, vegetables, fish, cheese, eggs, spices and all things Provençal. The best bit? Most can be enjoying with minimal prep and cooking! Cannes’ other open markets include Place Gambetta, north of Rue d’Antibes, and a magnificent flower market in

MOORINGS ON THE MED There are five marinas in Cannes. The most well known is Le Vieux Port de Cannes, or Old Port. It is ideally located in the heart of the centre of Cannes and a short walk to most of the city’s top attractions. It has moorings for up to 800 berths, up to 140m and a maximum draft of 5m. The two quays east and west of the marina, Albert Édouard Pier and Quai Saint Pierre, are where you will find the largest of the super yachts. The capitainerie is located on Quai Pantiero, opposite the Town Hall. There are all the usual amenities; electricity (>400amp/380V), water, fuel dock, pump out, heads and showers, mail and package hold, laundry, WiFi, parking and 24/7 security and surveillance. For boats larger than 65m the cruising yachts quay can be used, on special request, up to maximum LOA of 140m. Port Pierre Canto is a large quiet Marina on the east side of the Bay of Cannes, at the end of the Croisette Boulevard. It has 600 berths and can cater for yachts up to 90m in length and maximum draft of 7m. It was the first European port to be built specifically for superyachts. Like Old Port, Pierre Canto has all the usual amenities, including a full concierge service, limo hire and a yacht brokerage. There are restaurants, bars and a nightclub on site. The marina even provides the use of bikes for its guests. A regular shuttle service between Old Port and Pierre Canto operates throughout the year. Cannes’ ports are very popular. There is a good turnover of boats during the season and, as always, the earlier you book the better but it’s not impossible to get lucky as other yachts’ plans change. Mooring fees vary depending on the size of boat; the most up-todate info can be found at riviera-ports.com/en/fees-reservations-2. Designated anchorage spots are also available, including the channel in between the islands. Issue 4
