f money were no object, where would you stop when designing the yacht of your dreams? For one owner looking to create a megayacht with a masculine edge, a collaboration between CRN’s technical team, Studio Nuvolari Lenard and Studio Gilles & Boissier Interior Design enabled him to obsess over every detail, resulting in a craft that’s sheer perfection. Atlante is a truly unique vessel. At 11 metres wide and boasting four decks and an Owner’s Suite, four VIP cabins accommodating 12 guests, as well as cabins for 13 crew members, she is nothing if not spacious. But clever design touches manage to create an intimate atmosphere on board – the dark colours of the hull and superstructure are also found in the interior, with varying tones of Carrara and Verona marble, combined with shades of smoked oak skilfully mixed with brushed fir, black oak and larch.

This is a megayacht designed for entertaining. The main deck is a multi-purpose area which can be transformed from a technical zone to a living space – a natural continuation of the beach club, a large and comfortable home theatre or even a generous party area. The sun deck features an intimate relaxation zone composed of a sunbathing area with an electrically manoeuvrable sunshade and a stunning swimming pool at the bow facing out onto the sea ahead. An incredible attention to detail and finish even extends to the day loo, which is fitted out in Calacatta Vagli marble and afrormosia teak. And if you tire of the view from the windows, the on-board entertainment system is completely integrated and controlled via iPads and iPhones. Atlante is equipped with two Caterpillar 3512C engines that propel the craft to a maximum speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. Issue 6 |

Vision 46

The Vision Series has been designed, from the start, to embody the cruising sailor’s wish list. What is striking about this boat is the attention to detail, and the endless list of thoughtful features – some high-tech and some just common sense – executed simply and elegantly. The development process for the Vision started with consulting cruising sailors from around the world about what would make the perfect sailing cruiser. Bavaria then combined the expert power of Farr Yacht Design and the British boutique firm Design Unlimited. The result is a boat that has set a new standard in the owner’s cruiser category, with a focus on high-end elegance, comfort and easy handling. The unique cockpit design with offset companionway allows for a large port cockpit table that is electrically lowered and convertible to a day/

lounging bed – which creates a true living cockpit, not yet seen in the production cruiser class. The Vision’s many unique comfort and handling features combine with elegant interiors, Farr Yacht Design engineering for fast and comfortable passages, and the premium build quality and finish found in all Bavaria Yachts. All combined, this stunning boat is sure to draw attention wherever she drops her hook. The two-cabin Vision 46 can be customised with one or two heads and each floor plan includes a separate shower room. She can also be configured with a third cabin in place of the store room. Prices from £181,982 inc delivery, commissioning and VAT. 01489 550583 clippermarine.co.uk

1090 Hard Top

Cleverly designed by boaters for boaters, this hand-crafted motor yacht is a must-see; we believe she’s one of a kind. Setting new standards in the 37ft cruiser category, the new Sheerline 1090 Hard Top will be making her world debut at London Boat Show, 8–17 January 2016. From her hand-crafted timber interior, utilising the latest materials and styling, you would think you were aboard a boat twice the size. There are four berths in two cabins: an island double that converts to v-berths in the spacious master cabin, and the full-beam large double in the mid cabin. Direct glazing in the hull and superstructure gives a light and airy feel to the cabin, offering the protection of a hard 12 |

top in the cockpit with a large electric sunroof; she is perfectly suited for Northern European weather. The semi-displacement hull gives a comfortable economical ride at sea with beautiful slow-speed handling; the advantage of a shaftdrive engine means inland 4 knots cruising or coastal use at 20 knots are both possible. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss building a bespoke boat tailored to your individual needs. Prices from £244,000 inc VAT. 01628 773177 sales@braymarinesales.co.uk

With an established history of building top quality, semidisplacement trawler yachts Explorer have taken all their combined experiences to set a new standard in trawler yacht design at this size. Beneteau Oceanis 41.1

Beneteau’s newest addition to the Oceanis range, the Oceanis 41.1 was launched at Paris Boat Show and will be shown at Boot Dusseldorf in January. The chined hull of the Oceanis 41.1 is a product of the Finot-Conq design team, while Nauta Design has created an interior that looks to have ticked all the boxes in terms of what is needed from a modern-day 40-footer. Ingeniously, the transom converts into a huge aft sailing platform, affording direct access to the sea without encroaching on the space and comfort of the helm stations. The mast is set further aft than on previous Oceanis models,

creating an optimal sail plan and giving outstanding speed and stability under sail. The interior of the Oceanis 41.1 is airy and has plenty of scope for owners to choose an interior that suits them from the choice of woodwork and fabrics to the number of cabins and shower rooms. The new Oceanis 41.1 is set to become ‘best in class’. t 131 feet (40 metres) Sunseeker’s 131 Yacht will be the largest model ever to make its debut at the London Boat Show, and will appear alongside a stunning collection of other Sunseeker models ranging from 50 feet upwards. The first of three large models set for launch in early 2016, the groundbreaking new 131 Yacht takes Sunseeker’s superyacht capabilities to new levels. Exclusive pictures released earlier this year revealed the sumptuous quality and attention to detail that have gone into this innovative new take on Sunseeker’s proven superyacht platform. A standout feature is the addition of feature glass in the Master Stateroom, Saloon and Upper Saloon to create a light-filled, relaxed, comfortable and enjoyable environment for owner and guests. The 131 Yacht enables its owner to tailor every element of the interior design and layout to their personal preferences via Sunseeker’s unique ‘Bespoke’ service. Standard guest configuration is for 10 guests in five cabins, with scope for up to 12 to be accommodated depending on the layout and options selected. The spacious garage can accommodate a tender of up to 6.0m in length plus two PWCs. Based on the classic Sunseeker deep V hull, this large tri-deck yacht is equally comfortable operating at 10 knots for an extended cruising range of 1,500 nautical miles or at 23 knots for ultimate performance. Build time for each new 131 Yacht is around one year, with capacity in place to have up to five yachts in build simultaneously. Demand for the 131 Yacht is already extremely high with the first five already sold.

I

n the 1980s, Bayliner brought affordable sportscruisers to the masses. With the launch of its mass-produced Ciera range the company invaded the UK and put mid-20-foot cruisers in front of customers at prices the premium manufacturers just couldn’t compete with. While there was no doubt that a Fairline 21 Sprint was a far more nicely put together craft, that the cheaper Bayliner 2455 offered much more space for less cash was inarguable. You could put a 2455 Ciera on the water brand new for under £20,000. First time buyers took to them in droves and the range expanded, driving established European builders up in size where quality was an easier sell. By the early nineties, the Fairline 21 Sprint, 24 Carerra and 26 Sunfury were gone, along with the Princess 266 Riviera and sundry Sunseekers. The Americans were here to stay – piling ’em high and selling ’em cheap. A little rough around the edges they might have been, but they probably did more to put new boaters on the water than anyone else. But after two decades at the top of this rapidly burgeoning sector, Bayliner lost their way and, in the late noughties, to everyone’s surprise, announced total withdrawal from the sportscruiser arena to concentrate on speedboats and cuddy cabins. They’re back now though, and as well as selling them in Europe, Bayliner is building them here too, in a brand new plant in Poland. In fact these boats are solely for the European market; they won’t be sold in the States. A very different profile from Cieras of old, this latest model has lost the wedge-shaped form of earlier iterations and lost the pointless vestigial side decks, the cabin top being high, wide and flat. It gives the boat a slightly dumpy look, but it’s not without its advantages. Accessed via a centre opening screen and chunky steps built into the sliding cabin door, the gentle cant of the roof allows this area to become usable deck space, laid out with sun cushions to create a great spot to top up your tan. It makes for a fair-sized drop to the pontoon though, so figure on the bow thruster to control the bow in marina confines while the crew egress via the wide bathing platform. The cockpit is classically laid out with a pair of seats aft around a drop-in table and a longitudinal seat adjacent to the double helm gifting height in the mid cabin. The helm seat is fixed but has a lift bolster and the wheel tilt adjusts. Open-tread steps access the cabin and it is down here that you really feel the benefit of that flat, full-width foredeck. Headroom carries well forward and there’s plenty of elbow room too, as the dinette is allowed to stretch out to the hull sides. Like the cockpit, the layout is entirely conventional. There’s a horseshoe of dinette at the front, a galley to port, heads opposite (which incorporates a shower but not quite standing headroom) and back aft the open-plan mid cabin offers a permanent double berth beneath the forward section

 The Ciera 8’s conventional layout includes a horseshoe of dinette at the front, heads opposite the galley, and an open-plan mid cabin aft

of the cockpit. It’s well thought out: those open-tread steps help alleviate claustrophobia in the mid section, and the unusual profile of the dinette backrests is due to incorporation of the infill cushions that allow this area to convert into a dinette. While the layout might not be a quantum leap over earlier Bayliner boats, the finish certainly is. There is no bare GRP anywhere down here – soft linings are the order of the day. The colour scheme is subtle too, which will appeal to the European tastes that this boat is aimed at. It is still a Bayliner though, so don’t expect Sea Ray rivalling levels of quality. It’s the same at the helm, where Bayliner have built in space for a plotter and chrome-rimmed the gauges, but the panels are still flat grey plastic held in place with exposed black screws. Amusingly, the switches are dead ringers for the toggle switches of Bayliner past – a nice retro touch. One of them operates a power engine-hatch lift though; you wouldn’t have got

Sat centre stage in the engine bay is Mercruiser’s very latest petrol engine, the brand new 4.5 litre V6. In the past, Mercruiser has based its petrol motors around automotive GM blocks. But not this time – this engine is pure Mercruiser through and through. Our test boat sports the more powerful 250hp variant of the two versions of this motor (the alternative being 200hp). With five heavy adults on board on our test it needed every last horsepower of it too: even with the leg trimmed right in, acceleration onto the plane is a stately affair. Once up and running it proves entirely adequate, revving out to 30 knots at 5,000rpm, cruising comfortably at 4,500. And the handling is a revelation in comparison to the bone-shaking hard ride of its

ancestors – their ‘sequential lift’ hull providing plenty of the latter at the expense of your fillings. This latest incarnation does an entirely passable job of parting the waves. It’s dry, too, throwing spray out wide. That flat foredeck does impinge on the forward view though, especially at lower planing speeds where the Ciera 8 is quick to settle at the stern. I found myself using the bolster or standing to maintain forward vision – and I’m not exactly short. It’s fantastic to see Bayliner back in the starter sportscruiser market. Instrumental in introducing many families to the joys of life afloat, this vessel represents exactly the shot in the arm that this sector needs.

Make your way to stand G070 at the London Boat Show and meet Thomas Wills and Jamie Coombes from Sunseeker Torquay

Marina: What can visitors expect from the relocated Sunseeker stand this year? Thomas Wills: We are bringing eight boats to the show this year, including the stunning new 131 Yacht. A VIP tour around the Sunseeker of your choice is a great way to get to know the details that make a Sunseeker the quintessential luxury yacht; we are both looking forward to showing customers on board. Marina: What do you think attracts people to the Sunseeker Torquay dealership? Jamie Coombes: I think our passion is contagious! This is the perfect job if you love boating – being surrounded by these incredible yachts makes every day at work a pleasure. Prior to working with Sunseeker I raced with a professional sailing team, competing against Olympic and America’s Cup Sailors in one-design keelboat classes throughout Europe and the US. The move into brokerage was a natural one also having a sales background, and I think that my hands-on experience allows me to advise customers honestly and without bias. That’s what our customers appreciate. That, and the fact that Sunseeker yachts are stand-out first class in both performance and build quality. TW: I’m most proud of the individual attention we are able to give

each and every customer. Whether you are investing in a 131 Yacht or considering moving up from a smaller boat via our brokerage service, we always give every customer our very best. I also enjoy taking new boat owners to the Sunseeker shipyard, where they can see the yachts in all stages of production – it enables our clients to appreciate the build quality of these world class boats. Marina: Which of the Sunseeker models on display at the boat show is your personal favourite? TW: That’s a tough one! I’d have to say the Predator 57 with the Volvo D13 900s, because my passion is open Predator boats and the Predator 57 has a great combination of performance and practicality, especially with the lowering door in the saloon. JC: The 86 Yacht ticks a lots of boxes for me – daring design, technology use of materials, plus a flybridge to die for! A truly exceptional yacht. aunching at Boot Dusseldorf in January 2016, the new Lagoon 450 SporTop is the result of a partnership between VPLP Architects, Lagoon and the celebrated Nauta Design studio. From the exterior, the cabin-top design of the Lagoon 450 SporTop creates an elegant and striking roof profile with a large sunbathing area on the cabin-top. A lower mast and boom reduce pitching and make the boom easier to access. The cabin-top steering position boasts a large helm station seat with access from the cockpit and the deck. The catamaran’s interior is both elegant and functional. A luxurious owner’s cabin and comfortable guest cabins have plenty of natural light thanks to large glazed panels in the hulls. A ‘U’-shaped galley offers greater comfort at sea and is well-equipped, with large hot plates and ample storage and worktop space. The access between the cockpit and the galley has been optimised and the engine compartments are remote from the living areas and perfectly insulated. The new Lagoon 450 SporTop provides an attractive alternative to those who sail with a small crew and want greater proximity between the living area and helm.

Straight from the factory a Princess 88 is pretty luxurious by anyone’s standards, but with the assistance of Landau UK this yacht was destined for greater things

or most people, taking delivery of a brand new Princess 88, one of the world’s premier production yachts, would be the culmination of a dream. But for one discerning buyer, it was just the beginning – a blank canvas upon which to build his perfect motor yacht, to create something truly personal and unique. With the boat ordered and build commencing, the owner sought an established, reliable and experienced company to make his dream come true… Their initial meeting was at the London Boat Show in 2015. Landau’s massive converted ex-Formula One hospitality unit is fitted out like a luxury yacht, and offers the perfect showcase of Landau UK’s talents. It features over 150 of the latest marine products and systems, giving the Landau team the unique ability to show clients precisely what they can do. Sales Director Chris Doran was the one to sit down and talk through in detail the owner’s exact requirements, offering suggestions and concepts that turned the brush strokes of their ideas into finely wrought and comprehensive solutions. Unrivalled expertise Landau UK has been in the luxury yacht retro-fitting business for nearly 20 years, regularly travelling to all corners of the globe to deliver award-wining installations and retrofit solutions. Widely regarded as the industry leader in its field, the task of creating the ultimate Princess 88 was a perfect fit for the business. Lavish accommodation spreads across four opulent en suite cabins on the lower deck. The main deck sports an enclosed galley

and wheelhouse for the crew, while guests enjoy a generous singlelevel main saloon and a separate dining area for eight, opening out onto a massive aft deck and a drop-down balcony respectively. Crowning it all is a palatial flying bridge complete with spa bath, wet bar, and sprawling seating area around a huge teak table shaded by a long hard top. A transom garage for water toys aft of the crew quarters augments a high/low hydraulic bathing platform. It is the ultimate expression of the 90 foot motor yacht genre, which leads to just one question: “How do you improve upon perfection?” Landau UK had a few ideas. Over subsequent weeks these ideas crystallised into action plans as Chris and the team brought their experience to bear, creating innovative and imaginative solutions and presenting them to the owner. From convenience and safety through to entertainment and that ‘wow factor’, plans were formulated to bring the concept to fruition, marrying state-of-the-art technology and installation craftsmanship. Visual effects Lighting that is not only completely bespoke but also infinitely adaptable was the first challenge. Fifty two RGB deck lights and sixteen underwater lights are complemented by RGB spa bath lights, rope lights and even backlit name lights for the ultimate in lighting control – the whole system accessed and controlled wirelessly, courtesy of a custom-made iPad app. Every light zone can be independently adjusted for colour or intensity, offering infinite permutations to spectacular effect.

That concept of choice and variety also extends to the audio-visual systems. Again divided into zones, everyone can be their own DJ with access to a central server containing up to 9,000 albums. Not enough choice? Then guests can connect their own iPods or other devices and stream their own music through the system. Special software written to link the audio to the lighting creates the ultimate sound and light show. A 50-inch Samsung TV in the saloon is augmented by a Dolby 5.1 surround sound system with upgraded amplifiers and speakers. It sources films and TV shows from a 2TB Kaleidescape 1U Disc Vault server. Again controlled wirelessly, it is capable of storing 180 Blu Ray movies and 500 dvd movies and distributing them to any screen within the accommodation. And there’s one further screen that it feeds – on the flybridge a specially fabricated retractable TV assembly has been installed in the hardtop, allowing a 40-inch TV to be viewed from the spa bath. A self-tracking gyro-stabilised KVH Tracvision M9 satellite dome provides up to the minute broadcasting as an alternative. Water toys But life isn’t all about entertainment coming to you, sometimes you want to go to it, and to that end the hydraulic bathing platform is worth a visit. The transom garage has been turned into a veritable toy box, with three Seabob F5 S underwater scooters (one in each of the available colours) fitted to a Harken track for storage and instant accessibility. Slide them off and go diving, and upon your return each one clips back onto its bracket and simply slides back

along the track and locks into place, a fast-charging docking station for every unit ensuring that they’re ready to go again in no time. There’s even a GoCycle electric folding bike for anyone heading ashore – linked via iPad naturally, allowing access to pedal assist or full electric programs. Trouble-shooting tech On-board security includes a state-of-the-art gyro-stabilised thermal imaging camera. Mounted on a custom-made bracket on top of the navigation light for an uninterrupted 360-degree view, it’s so powerful that it can read a newspaper from half a kilometre away. On a more practical level, clear barriers designed with safety and aesthetics in mind are fitted to the flybridge to provide additional security for younger members of the family. Despite a depth of engineering that even runs to remote gateway access, allowing the systems to be monitored or adjusted and any problems diagnosed from anywhere in the world, the total installation took just two months. Three weeks of the install was carried out at Landau UK’s base in Southampton, the following five weeks completed on location in Barcelona in order to accommodate the owner’s pressing schedule. From the smallest detail to the complex logistics, the team at Landau UK have lived up to their pledge to go beyond – conceiving and delivering ultimate solutions seamlessly and on time. The result, one of the most comprehensively upgraded Princess yachts in the world, and the fulfilment of a dream.

he stunning Fjord 40 Open makes a huge splash at London Boat Show this year with the ‘Black’ version, which elevates a boat already known for its stylish, super-cool looks to another level. The Fjords have undergone a continuous improvement process both with regard to technology and quality since they were first launched, and are now presented in top form, perfected down to the minutest detail. The Open range still sports a fully equipped cabin, making the Fjord motor yacht an ideal companion for day trips or short journeys with overnight stays. A high freeboard provides safety on the sea, while in the stern the tables and seating area can comfortably cater for 12 party guests, or be converted into a huge sun deck with comfortable lounging cushions. Below deck, the Fjord 40 Open offers a breathtaking sense of space and the feeling of a luxury loft. There’s a double cabin, an occasional guest or child berth and a generously sized wet area and toilet compartment – perfect for spending the night. Carefully selected equipment options make every day on board an unforgettable experience and offer comfort for every occasion. The new model is powered with either twin IPS 500 Volvo Penta diesel engines or the more powerful IPS600 each with 435 hp – making speeds of 40 knots child’s play.  Under salvage law, a person who recovers another person’s boat from danger at sea is entitled to a reward

U

nder the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), and other such regulations there is a statutory duty to assist any boat in distress and to save life. When a boat gets into trouble at sea the priority will always be to look after the people on board, but once you and your crew are safe, the last thing you want to discover is a salvage claim is being made against you or your boat. Having an understanding of the principles of salvage will help you avoid such a sting in the tail! What is salvage? Salvage Laws have evolved from the philosophy that the protection of maritime property at sea is considered of sufficient importance that it should be encouraged by the courts through the offer of rewards to those who go to the assistance of others. Under Salvage Law a person who recovers another person’s boat or cargo from danger at sea is entitled to a reward based on the value of the property saved. This is considered fair to the boat owner and salvor based on the principle that a reasonable owner (or their insurer) who has avoided the total loss of their boat or other property through the intervention of a third party should be prepared to pay for the assistance offered,

 To make a claim, the salvor must have performed the service in tidal waters, including harbours

and also the person providing assistance shouldn’t be left out of pocket for doing so. Salvage services could include: n Towing n Pilotage n Navigating n Standing by a boat n Taking off any equipment n Taking a passenger ashore n Floating a stranded boat (or raising one which is sunken) n Saving a derelict or wreck. The underlying principles governing a salvage claim are: n The service must be used by legally recognisable subjects of salvage, that is to say, any boat or property in danger in navigable waters. n The service must be voluntary and not under a pre-arranged contract n The subject of salvage must be in danger n The service must either be successful or prevent or minimise damage to the environment n The service must be performed in tidal waters (including harbours)  Issue 6 |

| 33

06/12/2015 17:54

Given that the reward is normally payable out of the value of the property saved, for a salvor to be entitled to a reward something of value must be saved! This is known as the ‘no cure, no pay’ principle. Salvage in a rescue situation Generally speaking, recreational boaters are happy to help each other out and it is unusual for those offering assistance to claim salvage. However, if you are worried about a claim for salvage being made, it is usually cheaper to agree a payment for assistance in advance rather than to leave it to be determined after the event. If you’re not in imminent danger and the situation does not warrant calling the emergency services, you would probably be better off being up-front about fixing a price with the person offering assistance. If danger is imminent, call the emergency services. HM Coastguard and the RNLI do not normally make claims for salvage. However there will be occasions where a boat is in imminent danger and salvage has to be accepted without an agreement on payment (ie the amount of any payment will be settled later), and therefore a skipper and salvor should be very clear on what is being agreed at the time. Every situation is unique and there are a number of factors a skipper should take into account when considering the options: n Safety of people on board n Proximity to hazards n Weather conditions n Current, tide and sea state n Potential for anchoring If a boat is in distress, it’s unlikely the skipper will be able to arrange a written agreement, so a verbal agreement, witnessed by other crew members or individuals on board, of ‘salvage services’ upon the principle of ‘no cure, no pay’ should be offered. Skippers should also consider trying to agree salvage subject to the terms of the Lloyd’s Open Form, which is a simple form of

34 |

 When summoned in an emergency situation, the RNLI and Coastguard do not normally make claims for salvage

 Ensuring that you have the correct insurance removes the potential for stress if the worst should ever happen

salvage agreement and gives jurisdiction to determine the reward to Lloyd’s of London arbitrators, rather than the courts. Salvage without prior agreement If you find yourself subject to a salvage claim without prior agreement; for example if your boat has been salvaged without your knowledge after it has broken free of its moorings or any such circumstances where salvage is unavoidable, most insurance policies require immediate written notice of any accident or of any claim. No negotiations, payments, settlements, admissions or terminations of any claim should be made without the written consent of the insurers. If a salvage claim arises after your boat has been saved, notify your insurers straight away and leave the negotiations to them.

esign accolades in the sailing world don’t come much higher than the prestigious DAME awards at METS, recognised worldwide as the leading international competition of its type within the field of marine equipment and accessories. So there was great celebration when Henri Lloyd’s Flex 3D jacket (RRP £140) won this year’s Clothing and Crew Accessories category. This ground-breaking, super-lightweight thermal jacket features a revolutionary non-flattening ‘spiral’ wadding, which retains loft under stretch and is proven to be 33% more effective than its predecessor. The jacket’s other main feature is – as the name implies – its stretchiness. The Flex 3D outer fabric and internal wadding offer a four-way mechanical stretch which, when combined with a full-stretch thread and an articulated design, gives complete freedom of movement, unprecedented athletic mobility and immense comfort. The jury were bowled over by the feel of this innovative jacket, commenting: “It’s hard to convey just how light and comfortable the Flex 3D Jacket is without actually picking it up”. henrilloyd.com

It marks and stores up to 1,000 waypoints and 100 tracks, which can be transferred to other devices via its fast USB interface, as well as the tried-and-tested NMEA 0183. Users can also connect the GPS 73 to a computer to utilise the free Garmin HomePortTM trip planning software to plan upcoming routes, and to backup and store tracks, routes and waypoints. Battery life has also been improved to more than 18 hours on two AA batteries. Like the GPS 72, the updated GPS 73 is water resistant to IPX-7 standards (submersible in up to one metre of water for up to 30 minutes), and the unit floats in case of an accidental dunking. The GPS 73 features a high-contrast, sunlight readable display with a built-in backlight, and is easy to read in all lighting conditions. It also features built-in celestial data, including sunrise/sunset times and a fishing and hunting almanac. Issue 6 |

our choice of lifejacket will depend very much on what you’re going to be doing out on the water, so whatever the circumstances it’s crucial to choose your lifejacket carefully. Lifejackets need to be fit for purpose, so whether you are selecting for yourself, your family, your crew or your work colleagues, you should consider worst-case scenarios and the type of lifejacket everyone should be wearing for their ultimate safety overboard in that environment. Key factors that affect whether a lifejacket is fit for purpose include buoyancy level and inflation options. The level of buoyancy your lifejacket offers needs to be suitable for what you’ll be doing out on the water. For example, if you’re heading offshore and likely to be wearing heavy foul-weather gear then you need a lifejacket with a higher buoyancy to support you in that environment. Similarly, the inflation option you choose needs to work in the environment you’ll be out in. If you’re going to be out in all weathers, a lifejacket that has Hammar automatic inflation removes risk of accidental activation caused by wave splash. How to buy Once you’ve found a lifejackets that suits your circumstances, it’s vital to ensure that it fits properly and is comfortable. After all, a lifejacket will only work if you’re actually wearing it, and a loose or ill-fitting lifejacket won’t provide the level of performance required when inflated. For this reason its important to try before you buy. The added benefit of shopping in person for your lifejacket is that retailers are often a source of invaluable advice. Crewsaver operates an Approved Stockists scheme; affiliated retailers have a wealth of knowledge and will be able to talk you through the different lifejackets available. Trying on a lifejacket also means that you can check fit as well as comfort levels. Incorporating Fusion 3D technology into lifejacket design, Crewsaver has created lifejackets that mould to the shape of your body, sitting off the neck, giving total freedom of movement and making them so comfortable you may forget you’re wearing  Issue 6 |

These high-performance lifejackets are a must for anyone who takes safety on the water seriously. Crewsaver lifejackets undergo rigorous testing and retesting to exceed all safety standards. Ergonomic design Fusion 3D shaping creates ultimate wearer comfort and allows unobstructed movement. Crewsaver’s innovative Fusion 3D technology means that the lifejacket moulds to the shape of the wearer’s body and sits off the neck, this increases comfort levels, ensures a better fit and creates a lifejacket that is easy to wear for long periods. Bladder design A top-of-the-range bladder turns you onto your back fast (even when wearing full foul weather ocean kit), supports your head and diverts waves from your face. When inflated, a unique integrated chin support tilts your head back to help keep airways clear. AIS MOB device compatible The lifejacket is compatible with the McMurdo S20 Smartfind AIS MOB Device, which is essential for anyone going offshore. The lifejacket can be purchased with a factory fitted S20 Smartfind, and in this case inflation of the lifejacket activates the device automatically. The S20 features a flashing LED indication light, making you easier to spot at night and provides 24 hours of continuous transmission.

one. Crewsaver’s Fusion 3D range of lifejackets (the new Crewfit and ErgoFit lifejackets) are unisex and come in one size; however, innovation Fusion 3D design means that one size really does fit all. Convenient side waist adjusters allow a comfortable fit for both men and women, meaning that the range is truly versatile. Children’s lifejackets Children’s lifejackets really are more than just adult’s designs in smaller sizes. Manufacturers will have a different range for little ones with lifejackets designed specifically for babies and young children. Foam lifejackets for small sailors give inherent, permanent buoyancy, while crotch straps and adjustable waist straps ensure that the lifejacket is securely fitted and doesn’t ride up. For older children, Crewsaver has introduced its first Fusion 3D lifejacket designed specifically for juniors (20-50kg). As with the adult Fusion 3D range, the Crewfit 150N Junior’s 3D design means that it is supremely comfortable to wear, sitting off the neck and featuring the same side waist adjusters that make the Crewfit and ErgoFit ranges a perfect fit. 42 |

What to spend On the question of cost, what you need to spend on a lifejacket depends very much on your requirements. The Crewsaver Fusion 3D lifejackets start from just £60 (Crewfit 165N Sport – Manual), making them an extremely affordable option. Optional extras like a hood and light mean you can add the features that you need. At the other end of the scale, the top of the range ErgoFit 290N Ocean with McMurdo S20 AIS beacon retails at £473. Crewsaver’s own lifejacket designs evolve as a result of input from the professional crews they work with. Crewsaver’s expert designers work closely with the most experienced lifeboat crews, as well as elite round-the-world racers, used to pushing their limits within the extreme wind and wave conditions of the Southern Ocean. Working with the likes of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Artemis Racing gives Crewsaver unique insight, which is then fed directly into each of its lifejacket ranges, ensuring that whatever your reason for being afloat, your safety is never compromised. Cold a r o f g n i r a p e Pr

Follow these top tips from the RYA and ensure that your boat is in perfect condition and ready for anything come spring, explains RYA Chief Instructor Rachel Andrews…

T

he best way to winterise your boat is to use it – a boat contains a multitude of systems that hate inactivity, particularly the engine. But if you really don’t fancy a winter on the water and you are set on putting your boat to bed for the coldest months of the year, there are a few essential tasks that will help ensure it survives this dormant period. Don’t panic if you won’t have the time to do everything on this list: concentrate on winterising the engine, because it’s the part that will benefit the most  from a little TLC at this time of the year.

shorten the engine’s life, and a neglected oil system will cause expensive damage. Also consider using flushing oil or a flushing additive during the oil change, which helps to remove even more of these contaminants.

4

Check the gearbox or outdrive oil and replace it if it looks cloudy or milky.

5

Most diesel engines use either raw water or keel cooling – both of which need attention when winterising. Raw water systems require draining before leaving for the winter by closing the water inlet valve, or sea cock; disconnecting a hose from the circulating pump (unless there is a dedicated tap or plug); then refilling with a strong solution of fresh antifreeze. Run the engine to fully circulate the new solution. Simply draining the system is unlikely to remove all the water inside, which may then freeze and so cause damage over the winter.

1

First on the list is general engine cleaning and observation. Shine plenty of light, and use a mirror on a stick or a digital camera to see under and behind things. Dry the bilges to prevent corrosion and, if necessary, paint them white to highlight any leaks and drips in the future.

2

Whether your boat is being hauled out for the winter or not, fill your fuel tank to prevent condensation, which in turn prevents the growth of diesel bug.

3

Change the engine oil and replace the oil filter before leaving your boat for the winter. Leaving the old oil contaminated with the acidic by-products of combustion inside the engine block will

46 |

6

Check the water pump impeller and consider replacing it when de-winterising in case the blades have deformed over the winter. Keel cooling systems can be left alone providing they contain the correct water/antifreeze mixture. This can be checked using a strength tester available from marinas and good car spares outlets. Note that antifreeze has a limited life and if it has to be replaced then this is a good time to replace any suspect hoses. Keep the old hoses as emergency replacements.

7

Remove the air intake filter and block the intake with an oily rag to prevent rust inside; then do the same for the exhaust. Squirt a little oil into the intake and turn over the engine (without starting it) to distribute it over the cylinder walls. Be sure to place a warning about the blocked intake on the engine control panel to prevent anyone turning over the engine in your absence.

8

Where possible, remove the batteries and keep them warm and dry over the winter, fully charged or topped up at least every four to six weeks. Batteries left uncharged for long periods may need to be replaced completely. If you’re unable to remove the batteries or if the boat is staying on its mooring, leave them fully topped up and regularly recharged, because full batteries are less likely to freeze in sub-zero temperatures.

9

Relax or remove all belts and protect the drive wheels. Rust on these can chew up a belt very quickly in the new season.

10

If you’re taking the boat out of the water, make sure it is angled bow upwards slightly to enable rain water to run off immediately from covers, decks and cockpit.

11

Covers should keep water out, but remember to allow air to circulate. A proper through-draught will prevent condensation, which leads to dry rot, mould and corrosion (especially if left for more than a single season).

12

The internal freshwater supply system also requires attention. Drain the entire system including tank, pump, calorifier, water filters and all taps – especially shower mixers. Look for any areas where water could still be trapped in pipes. Plastic piping is less vulnerable than copper piping, but rigid unions can still be damaged by freezing temperatures.

13

If you have a water-based central heating system using antifreeze then the same checks carried out to the keel cooled engine system should be applied. If the system doesn’t use antifreeze then it should be drained as for the freshwater supply.

14

Remove any foodstuffs that may be damaged by the frost or attract unwanted visitors such as mice and rats.

15

Store all linen, clothing, blankets, curtains and other soft furnishings ashore – washed and dry. Prop the fridge door open – mould will form in less than a week if it’s left closed and you’ll return to a foul-smelling mess that’s impossible to eradicate. Ensure through-ventilation below deck. Leave cupboards and drawers open, prop up bunk cushions and leave under-berth locker lids open. Your aim to make sure that fresh air can get into every conceivable nook and cranny.

16

Ensure deck-installed electronics have tight-fitting covers, and consider spraying behind electronics with waterrepellent silicone. Check your navigation lights are still serviceable.

17

If you are leaving your boat afloat, check all through-hull fittings for leaks and corrosion. Don’t forget to check your stern glands and repack with grease if appropriate.

18

Make a list of what you have done to winterise your boat this year so that you remember what to reverse in the spring, and leave signs all around the boat so that no-one accidentally operates a winterised system!

safe at Sea

Night Exercise with the Coastguard Helicopter and Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Words and images JOHN PERIAM and GEOFFREY LEE

E

very day around our coast fishermen take to sea, sometimes with a crew, other times single handed. Sadly, the current rules and regulations are forcing many to take risks to earn a living by going to sea in inclement weather, and many feel they have no choice but to go out to work in conditions that they once would have considered extremely unsafe. Thankfully, there are people – both staff and volunteers – who are committed to ending preventable loss of life at sea; the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). In 2014 alone, the RNLI’s lifeboat crews and lifeguards went to the rescue of over 10,000 people. It is the RNLI and MCA who respond when a vessel gets into trouble, and every

time a lifeboat is launched or a search and recuse (SAR) helicopter takes to the air, the crews must be prepared to cope with a multitude of challenging and dangerous situations, which is why exercises are so important. Mainly volunteers, these lifeboat crew often fit their training around full-time jobs, and are on-call 24/7. Recently we joined Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat on several exercises to see firsthand how crews prepare for such an incident. Technology is constantly advancing, and the Shoreham Tamar All Weather Lifeboat Enid Collett is kitted out with state-of-theart equipment. It is a proven and fast boat travelling with 2000hp engines up to a speed of 25 knots. Launching from the boathouse,  Coxswain Steve Smith positioned her several miles off the

Shoreham coast. While we waited for the helicopter to arrive, Smith told us how and why radio procedure is so important when working with helicopters and a casualty: “Valuable time can be saved by following procedure and, if a vessel is lost, sectored searches take place to locate those in the water.” Paul Fisher from the RNLI Operations Department explained the use of radios in more detail: “It is so important that crews are trained how to transmit, while being constructive with their comments to

50 |

all involved – especially the casualty, who may well be in a situation where they need support to reassure them that all is fine and help is at hand. Radio comms between lifeboat and casualty are important but not always possible. It can help to guide the lifeboat to the casualty and inform the lifeboat crew of any possible hazards around them such as fishing nets or lines still in the water.” All Weather Lifeboats (ALBs) and Atlantic 85 lifeboats all have VHF and 121.5MHz direction-finding radio fitted. The usual working channel is 16: the international distress and calling channel on 156.8MHz. Channel 0 is HM Coastguard’s private channel and their consent must be gained prior to publishing the frequency. “It is normally the mechanic who is the radio operator on the ALB Lifeboat,” Paul explained. “However, the majority of crew are radio trained. The RNLI takes crew training very seriously and their training centre at Poole provides support, along with their mobile units that visit lifeboat stations.” Standard international radio voice procedures are used in all communications, but there can be situations when those being rescued do not know these, or don’t even have a working radio on board. Mobile phones are not the most proven means of communication and are easily lost in an emergency situation, so should never be relied on. The RNLI advises all fishermen (and recreational sailors) to undertake one of the available courses that will train them in what to do if disaster strikes, and how to follow the procedures set out by the RNLI to make their rescue swifter and safer. Helicopter training It was not long before H104 – an AgustaWestland AW139, a twin-engine helicopter popular with coastguard agencies globally – appeared, having taken off from Lee on Solent. “We really have to make the most of these exercises because they aren’t a regular occurrence.” said Coxswain Smith. “Lee is currently the busiest Maritime SAR helicopter in the UK and it isn’t uncommon for exercises to be cancelled at the last minute due to a shout.”

“Safety is of the utmost importance for all involved, and the relevant protective gear is now standard. It was calm tonight! However, it puts things into a different perspective when we are out in a force +9. That is why we do these exercises to the book”

Mark Blatcher, the Shoreham Lifeboat Mechanic, works with Second Cox Simon Tugwell to get those onboard involved in the exercise, which can include several incidents. “Our training now is with the aim of getting as many crew members acceptable for the All Weather Lifeboat,” Bletcher explained. “With an inshore lifeboat we are a busy station, especially in the summer. First-hand opportunities such as this must be taken.” The helicopter arrived out of the dark and positioned itself very low over the Tamar, dropping its winchman onto the deck. A brief discussion relating to the exercise was agreed, and the first crew member was winched up. This was followed by a medi-vac in a stretcher, then a search for a casualty in the water. While all this was happening, Smith was at the helm keeping a steady track at a fast speed, with the helicopter to the stern, while in constant radio communication with the pilot. “Safety is of the utmost importance for all involved, and the relevant protective gear is now standard. It was calm tonight! However, it puts things into a different perspective when we are out in a force +9. That is why we do these exercises to the book,” he told us. Exercises over, and Enid Collett was returned to the boathouse. A crew briefing and the all-important “thank you” to the helicopter crew was followed by a wash-down of the lifeboat, fuel checks and a reassuring, “We are now ready for service,” to the Coastguard. Our fishermen, often at sea when others are not, need to know that these services are there to help them when needed. The national press does at times have to report the sad outcome of incidents; but seeing first-hand how The RNLI and MCA work together it proves how important such joint exercises are. Our thanks go to Steve Smith and the crews at Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat for their continued support, and to the MCA Media team at Southampton. If you would like to find out more about the work of the RNLI, or to donate, please visit rnli.org

ake no mistake, the Grand Cherokee is a large vehicle by anyone’s standards. If you’re in the market for an SUV with real road presence then the current offering from iconic off-road manufacturer Jeep has to be on the shortlist. If, on the other hand, you’re after something that you can thread through tight city streets and park in small spaces then you might need to look elsewhere. Certainly the Jeep can handle city driving: its smooth automatic gearbox makes pootling around town a pleasure with that usually high 4x4 driving position affording great visibility, and once on the open road you really get a sense of what this SUV is all about – in fact there’s very little this accomplished vehicle can’t deal with. In North America, by far its largest sales market, the Grand Cherokee feels positively compact compared to the behemoth offerings from Dodge and Ford with their iconic F-150 (the bestselling vehicle in the US). In the UK and Europe, however, the priorities are a little different. Less concerned with overall size, particularly on our cramped streets, European high-end SUV buyers focus more on the luxury aspects of the purchase – a marketplace

forever dominated by the ubiquitous Range Rover and fiercely contested by the likes of BMW and Mercedes. To succeed here the Jeep has measure up to some very stiff competition. A closer look All Grand Cherokees come well equipped, with climate control and automatic wipers as standard, although most will avoid the entry-level Lareno (with its 188bhp variant of the 3.0-litre V6 diesel) in favour of higher-spec models. The Limited adds most of the options potential buyers look for, including leather upholstery, electrically adjustable and heated front seats, parking sensors, rear-view camera and the powered opening tailgate. Move up to the Overland and you gain blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control and a sunroof. Our Summit-spec review car also benefitted from built-in Blu-ray

The boot space is very generous, if not quite class-leading, with a high and level floor offering 782 litres (extending to 1,554 litres) and an array of useful storage options. It also covers a full-sized spare wheel, which accounts for the extra load height. In Summit-spec the Harmon Kardon audio upgrade includes a large boot-mounted subwoofer which does rob a bit of the available space. Climb into the front and you’re welcomed by deep comfortable seats, leather trim and brushed aluminium with chrome detailing. In keeping with the competition, the dash sports a large colour touchscreen that controls most of the vehicle options, with only the climate control and heated screen buttons beneath. Although easy to use and comprehensive, the touchscreen interface lacks a little of the finesse of BMW’s iDrive and offerings from Range Rover and Mercedes. The interior also throws in a couple of Jeep quirks – a single multi-control indicator stalk and foot-operated parking brake control. Move down the centre console and you find the comprehensive

Selec Terrain controls for the 4x4, differentials and ride-height and a rather traditional-looking drive selector. It might look a little outdated, but rest assured it now controls a very modern ZF-derived 8-speed automatic complete with wheel-mounted paddle-shift. Available across the whole range, this new gearbox offers improved acceleration and shifting and goes a long way to explaining the reduction in both emissions and consumption. Combined with the updates to the V6 diesel engine and the addition of an Eco mode, the Grand Cherokee now delivers 37.7mpg on a combined cycle – more on a par with its European rivals. The drive The new auto gearbox does a great job of keeping the engine in the strongest part of the rev-range and affords effortless and relaxed cruising. The only criticism of the gearbox was a slight reluctance to kick-down when overtaking – easily overcome by a quick tap on the steering wheel-mounted manual paddles, although once in manual

mode the gearbox stays there until you put it back into full-auto. Push harder and engine noise does start to intrude on the cabin, but for the most part the Grand Cherokee is a very civil, comfortable and quiet place to be. Ride comfort has always been a strong selling point of the Grand Cherokee, with the American market placing more emphasis on this than overall handling. The entry-level Lareno and the Limited models feature tried and trusted steel spring suspension – fine on smooth or slightly broken tarmac, but prone to a lot of body movements and some jarring over larger potholes. Move further up the range and all models gain the higher-spec air springs and a marked increase in body control and ride comfort; however, bear in mind that the Grand Cherokee remains a large, heavy and tall vehicle. Venture off road and the excellent Selec Terrain system comes into effect. Jeep have built their reputation on tough all-terrain ability and the current Grand Cherokee doesn’t disappoint. Offering complete control over the front and rear differentials, power delivery and distribution and overall ride height, the comprehensive system governing the full-time four-wheel-drive ensures the current Grand Cherokee not only lives up to its predecessor’s pedigree but also holds its own against the European competition. In truth, most vehicles in this market sector will spend precious little time in the mud, but Jeep owners are more likely to take to the hills than many of their peers.

Living with a Grand Cherokee The Grand Cherokee is not a cheap vehicle – our review car with its various added options comes in at £54,140 – but, spec-for-spec, you do get more for your money than you would with the likes of BMW, Range Rover and Mercedes. That said, despite great strides forward in build quality and styling, the Grand Cherokee does still fall behind the best of the European offerings and depreciation remains a big concern. None of the luxury SUVs can ever be considered cheap to own or run and it’s true that Jeep have gone out of their way to make the current Grand Cherokee as competitive in this respect as possible, but unfortunately potential buyers seem more concerned with image and prestige than they do overall running costs. Of course if cost is no obstacle, you could plump for the thoroughly bonkers SRT8 with its 6.4-litre V8 petrol and sub 5-second 0-60 sprint – you’ll probably need to be the heir to a petroleum company to run it though, with real-world mpg falling well below the claimed 20mpg and emissions of 327g/km. Marina’s opinion It’s easy to play the safe option when choosing a luxury SUV – Range Rover has the image, Mercedes the technology and BMW the efficiency. But if you want to stand out from the crowd and go your own way then why not take a closer look at the Grand Cherokee… You might just be surprised how good it is.

London Boat Show

F

Discover the best of boating, from the innovations of the 1960s to the sailing champions of tomorrow

rom 8-17 January 2016, ExCeL London will be transformed into a hub for all things maritime, when iconic brands showcase their newest boats and greatest technical innovations at the London Boat Show. New for 2016 is the London Boat Show theatre, a dedicated area for innovators, adventurers and rising stars to share their inspiring stories and expert knowledge through interactive talks and panel shows. Visitors can expect a mixture of A Question of Sport, Mock the Week and Mastermind. The ‘Mediterranean Bay’ will put boating skills to the test live at the Show. The purpose-built pool will host water seminars on close quarters boat handling, sail reefing and capsize drills. You’ll also have the opportunity to trial an array of watersports, from favourites including water-walking and kayaking to the latest must-have toys, including the Seabob sourced by Landau UK. With over 500,000 litres of water surrounded by faux villas and cafes, this attraction will be a destination in its own right. Alongside today’s cutting-edge technology, the Show celebrates the innovations of yesteryear with its attraction, the ‘Sixties Revival’. Showcasing the best of the 1960s, both boating and culturally, visitors

will be transported back to an era which saw the first man walk on the moon, The Beatles, the arrival of the Mirror Dinghy and Sir Francis Chichester becoming the first person to sail singlehanded around the world. Plus, with the Show’s new layout providing the perfect platform to showcase the finest luxury yachts to the latest in cutting-edge electronics, from over 300 of the leading British and international companies, visitors can expect to witness more than 70 boats and products make their debut at the forthcoming event. As well as seeing new and returning brands for 2016 including Suzuki GB, Four Winns, Arthur Beale and Lewmar. Murray Ellis, Managing Director of British Marine Boat Shows, comments: “At the heart of Europe’s most pioneering city, we are celebrating the rich heritage of British boating at this iconic event. Visitors will be taken on a journey of discovery, from reliving the great moments of our time to technologies of the future which will revolutionise the way we get out on the water.” Advance tickets to London Boat Show start from £10, with two children under the age of 15 going free with each adult. MDL’s Cobb’s Quay Marina With sandy beaches and excellent cruising on your doorstep, and France only a short hop away, Cobb’s Quay has a lot to offer

W

ith its lively, seafaring atmosphere, MDL’s Cobb’s Quay Marina is a favourite with yachtsmen and motor cruisers alike. Situated at Hamworthy in Holes Bay within Poole Harbour, berth holders and visitors have unrivalled access to the world’s second largest natural harbour, with plenty of wildlife and beautiful bays to explore and enjoy, as well as easy access to award-winning sandy beaches including those at Studland, Sandbanks and Bournemouth. For those choosing Cobb’s Quay as a base for cruising, the Solent lies to the east, offering year-round racing and sheltered cruising around the Isle of Wight. To the west is Studland Bay and Swanage, with its popular beach and white cliffs. Travelling further west, there are extensive opportunities for weekend cruising in the unspoilt waters of Torbay and the West Country. For longer distance cruise destinations of a week or more, France, the Channel Islands or the West Country are all within reach and offer plenty of scope for longer term exploring. What’s more, MDL berth holders can also take advantage of the company’s Freedom Berthing package, which enables complimentary stays at other MDL marinas in the UK, Spain and Italy. The cruising network is extended even further to the northwest coast of France with more than 100 marinas to choose from, all the way from Saint Valery on the shores of Normandy to Port Médoc in the Gironde. Accessible facilities Cobb’s Quay has 750 marina berths that can accommodate vessels up to a maximum LOA of 25 metres, as well as 250 dry stack berths with a maximum LOA of 10 metres. Offering increased security and lower maintenance costs, the dry stack service includes unlimited launching on demand seven days a week, 365 days a year. The marina also offers a slipway, accessible at all states of tide, a 25 ton slipway hoist and car and trailer space. The on-site restaurant, Cobb’s Quay Yacht Club, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week, serving up an exciting range of dishes based on fresh local and seasonal produce in a stylish, friendly and welcoming environment. The marina has been awarded four Gold Anchors by The Yacht Harbour Association and is also a member of the RYA’s Active Marina scheme and, as such, encourages and supports

increased berth holder activity which includes training, cruising and social opportunities. Join in the fun The marina has a vibrant social scene and plays an important part in the local community. The team recently held two fundraising events to raise money for worthy causes. Manager of Cobb’s Quay Marina, Dave Wilson, recently organised a very popular fishing competition at the marina. Now in its seventh year, the Open Species Fishing Competition is run annually and raises money for UK sailing rehabilitation charity, Heroes on the Water. The event raised an impressive £650 for the charity. For the second year running, Cobb’s Quay Marina teamed up with the Poole Bay Small Boat Angling Club and the competition saw 19 boats out on the water, reeling in, photographing and then releasing as many species of fish as possible. A group of berth holders also recently took part in a fundraising golf tournament in aid of local charity, Julia’s House. 24 keen golfers took part in The ‘Tyder Cup’, which was organised by Bob Miles, a berth holder at Cobb’s Quay Marina, and Chas Kirkby, Dockmaster at Cobb’s Quay Marina. Bob’s wife and daughter in law both work at Julia’s House, a children’s hospice charity in Dorset dedicated to helping life-limited children and their families across the county. The tournament raised £2,000 for the hospice, a fantastic achievement.

winter fun Adi Togs, Co-founder of PlainSailing.com, shares his favourite secret sailing spots around the UK and Europe for quality time on the water this winter

I

 The Greek island of Santorini, in the Aegean Sea, is part of a volcanic caldera

t’s a well-known fact that when the Northern hemisphere’s winter season sets in there are fewer boats on the water, as enthusiasts and professionals alike moor up for a few months and opt to sit out the worst of the year’s weather on dry land. However, the team at PlainSailing.com think this is one of the most exciting times to be on the water, with many gorgeous sailing destinations to visit and explore – many of which you’ll have virtually to yourself. Sailing in good weather is nice, but if you want a real challenge then head out in winter. The wind often seems that much fiercer, the waves that much choppier, and the conditions always seem on the cusp of a storm; but sailing is meant to be fun, so why not try it? Pull yourself away from the warmth of the fire, get outside and enjoy the beauty of being on the water. Fill your lungs with cleansing breaths of crisp winter air and remind yourself what it’s like to be alive. 

 Enjoy the invigorating rush of sailing the Clyde, Scotland, in the depths of winter

 Greece offers a wealth of islands and mainland coastline perfect for exploring by sail

Scotland One of the most beautiful places to sail (in my opinion), is Scotland. It’s very beautiful in the summer – when the small islands around the Clyde are lit up by glittering sunshine – but it’s even more beautiful in the winter. In the south of England talk this time of year always turns to the likelihood of a white Christmas (usually nil), but this far north you can take in snow-capped hills and mountain peaks in clear view as you go about your sailing. Add the cleansing whiteness of ground frost or drifting snow, and you have the perfect white Christmas. Some particularly stunning locations to sail in Scotland include Portavadie with its world class facilities, and the tranquillity of Lochranza, so hoist that sail and off you go!

Sunnier climes If it’s some winter sun that you’re after, a classic destination is Greece. A new hotspot for charter locations on PlainSailing.com – why not consider sailing around the Greek Islands to celebrate your New Year in style? Picture a handful of boats gently bobbing up and down as you pop open the corks on a few celebratory bottles, in front of a backdrop of idyllic islands and delightfully empty marinas… Bliss! Kos is also a great charter destination. It’s part of the Dodecanese islands in the Aegean Sea, all of which offer an excellent playground for a sailor – lots of islands to explore, a selection of secluded bays, and small forgotten towns like Leros and Kalymnos to wander around and stock up on provisions.  The bustling Kos marina is a gateway to this fascinating and beautiful island

 If you don’t feel confident moving your own boat around the world, why not charter one?

 Fast becoming the new jewel in the Med’s crown, Croatia is still off the beaten track

With a coastline over 1,700km long, countless splendid islands to explore and dependable sunny weather, Croatia is one of the go-to places in a yacht. An added benefit for sailing to Croatia is that the sail tourism is relatively new. This means that a lot of the facilities are newly developed, and many more are already on their way. Berths are often bigger too, which can only be a positive. If you charter near Split, the sheer number of yachts you will see heading out towards the islands of Brac and Vis on the day after changeover can be quite breath-taking. Or if you’d rather sail towards a more private location head for the secluded and exclusive Pakleni Otoci island group from Hvar harbour, which is renowned for its peaceful coves perfect for diving and fishing.

Charter options If setting sail on your own boat this winter is just not for you, chartering is always an option. It’s a win:win situation for everyone – the owner gains in money and maintenance, while the sailor can enjoy the winter months on a well-cared for boat somewhere else in the world without the hassle and expense of transporting their own vessel. And finally this winter, don’t forget that TLC is key. When the winter starts to set in, make sure that if you do decide to tuck your boat away for the season, it’s properly cared for before you close the hatches. There’s nothing worse than the cold getting in: rust can spread and any previous problems can deteriorate. Get your boat serviced before it’s too cold and you’ll have peace of mind for the entire winter.

Find out more PlainSailing.com is a complete online charter service, where users can check availability, compare yachts and upload sailing qualifications in a simple and straightforward process online. Aethic eco-sunscreen If you’re sailing in sunnier climes this winter, protect marine life at the same time as you save your skin

O

ver the last 50 years, 80% of corals have been lost to coastal development and pollution. Although coral reefs cover less than 1% of the Earth’s surface, they are home to 25% of all marine fish species. At least 500 million people rely on coral reefs for food, coastal protection, and livelihoods. Coral reefs form natural barriers that protect nearby shorelines from the eroding forces of the sea, thereby protecting coastal dwellings, agricultural land and beaches. And they provide vital components in medicine – including those for the treatment of cancer, HIV, cardiovascular diseases, ulcers, and other ailments. Did you know that a study published in National Geographic in 2008 by Prof Roberto Danovaro et al. of Marche Polytechnic University demonstrated that most sunscreens can cause terminal damage to coral and marine life? Several commonly used sunscreen ingredients (including some of the most prevalent sun filters) can awaken dormant viruses in the algae that enjoy a symbiotic co-existence with coral species. These chemicals can cause a deadly viral epidemic in the algae, leaving coral with nothing to eat and ultimately to bleach and perish. Now there’s a way to protect your skin without harming marine wildlife, using London-based skincare company Aethic’s new Sôvée sunscreen (150ml, £40, aethic.com), which has just been adopted by Britain’s America’s Cup challenger, Land Rover BAR. Land Rover BAR Sailing Team manager, Jono Macbeth, commented, “With our sustainability ideals and our love of the ocean, Aethic Sôvée sunscreen is the only product that stood up to scrutiny. Constructed with a three-layer GORE-TEX® PRO laminate custom-engineered for Musto, this jacket is built for prolonged offshore sailing. It traps air close to the body, while large fleece-lined pockets keep hands warm and cargo pockets keep essentials accessible. Also available in men’s fit, the articulated elbows and underarms provide comfort and ease of movement. Additional features include a fluorescent GORE-TEX® hood and photoluminescent strips.

Musto’s Baltic Primaloft® Jacket is a durable, versatile mid layer designed to keep the warmth in this winter. A Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating causes water to bead off the fabric making this suitable as an outer layer when the weather is warm, while Primaloft®’s Silver insulation offers a fantastic warmth-to-weight ratio. Plus robust tricot-lined hand-warmer pockets and stretch inner cuffs equipped with thumb loops provide further warmth and comfort against the elements.

Moisture and temperature regulating, naturally antibacterial and incredibly soft merino wool make this t-shirt an essential base layer for any cold weather adventurer. Phenomenal wool fibres wick moisture away from the body to keep the wearer dry and comfortable, and the soft fibres trap vital warmth in cold climates. Available in men’s and women’s fits, this long-sleeve top can be worn as a stand-alone piece or as a base layer for those cold days at sea.

This performance-weight, breathable, waterproof and windproof layer is specifically engineered using Gul’s GCX2 fabric to prevent water penetration while allowing perspiration moisture to evaporate. With waterproof and breathability ratings of minimum 5,000mm and 5,000g/m/24h, all the seams are 100% waterproof heat-taped. Dual storm flaps and high visibility three-way adjustable stowaway ho help make this the ideal coastal sailing jacket. Available in men’s and women’s fit.

A versatile mid-layer jacket, the Code Zero’s advanced GCX 3S Ripstop softshell fabric has been engineered to keep you warmer for longer by combining a durable DWR ripstop nylon outer with waterproof membrane and inner grid fleece thermal liner, offering waterproof and breathability ratings of minimum 10,000mm and 10,000g/m/24h. All seams are fully taped for long-lasting waterproofness, and internal fleece backing and zippered hand-warmer pockets help keep you snug.

H2 Flow Jacket

Skagen Race Jacket

Combining the unique LIFA® fibre technology next to your skin with a premium and 100% ethical Merino wool exterior, the HH® Warm Ice Crew affords superior insulating and wicking properties. LIFA®’s ability to move moisture away from the body has revolutionised everyday life for people who love being active outdoors. HH now combine the original LIFA® stay dry technology with the new HH Warm®, to create a base layer that’s unsurpassed in warmth and wicking ability.

Perhaps the most revolutionary midlayer since Helly Hansen invented the world’s first quick-dry and lightweight fleece in the 1960s, the H2 Flow fleece jacket has received numerous design and gear awards for its well-designed, beautiful and simplistic functionality. The H2Flow technology optimises insulation, using air pockets or holes that store warmth from your body. But you can easily cool down if you get too hot – opening the ventilation zippers lets cold air in and warm air out.

Helly Hansen’s Skagen sailing series is its best product line for coastal sailing. With its protective, yet lightweight Helly Tech® fabric and nearly 140 years of experience incorporated in the construction and design, the Skagen Race Jacket will offer great protection and comfort for years to come. The 2-ply Helly Tech® Professional construction creates a waterproof, windproof and breathable fabric, keeping you dry and warm, and the EN471 Hi-Vis hood ensures you’ll always be visible at sea.

H-Therm Long Sleeve Crew

Squall Jacket

Sail Jacket

The Henri Lloyd H-Therm base layer is a key part in the three-layer system. Designed to wick moisture away from the body, the H-Therm crew is constructed using a high wicking Fast-Dri fabric. Silver ion antimicrobial technology has been incorporated into the design to keep you feeling fresher for longer, while the flatlock seam construction offers increased comfort. And you’re safe if it’s sunny too, with the added benefit of UPF 50+ sun protection.

New for 2015, the Squall Jacket is 100% waterproof and windproof and also highly breathable. It features a heat-retentive fleece lining, and the quilted sleeve linings reduce interlining binding thus making it easier to use the jacket as part of a layering system. The shape of the jacket has been contoured to reduce windage, and the differential hem offers a superior fit. Other features include a non-corrosive front zip and reflective detailing for additional safety.

New for 2016, the Sail Jacket (available in both a men’s and women’s fit) is fully seam-sealed and engineered from Henri Lloyd’s 100% waterproof, 100% windproof and highly breathable TP1 fabric. Trimmed with the iconic 721X branding, a range of design features ensure you stay dry whatever the weather, including an articulated hood pod with water resistant zip, storm flap with drainage channel, and self-fabric foldaway hood with one-handed shockcord aperture adjusters.

Gill KB Racer Jacket

Windproof Fleece Jacket

Hydrophobe Top

The next generation of the Gill KB Racer Jacket combines extreme wet-weather protection with an ergonomic fit that allows for complete freedom of movement as you manoeuvre around the boat. With a re-engineered hood, collar and zippers, the jacket is perfect for those up against the demands of inshore racing. Features include a longer back hem for added protection, adjustable for an optimised fit; adjustable PU cuffs with a low-bulk seal; packable hi-vis hood; brushed collar lining.

This men’s fit fleece is made from 83% polyester and 17% PU formed into laminate breathable and windproof microfleece, designed to keep you warm on even the coldest of days at sea. Close-fitting internal cuffs, an internal storm guard and a drawcord hem keep you fully protected from the elements whatever the weather. Not only will it keep the wind out and be a warm mid layer, but with external zippered pockets it’s an ideal outer layer in mild conditions.

An update to Gill’s award-nominated thermal, the new Hydrophobe Top is a super-lightweight rash vest, with a soft, stretchy fit for freedom of movement. Being a rash vest it doubles as a warm thermal layer next to your skin as well as a cover-up on warmer days – it’s naturally hydrophobic, so water is repelled away from the fabric, meaning it won’t soak up the spray and get heavy and damp when you’re working in wet conditions. It’s available in men’s, women’s and children’s fit.

Bavaria

30 Cruiser

Introduced in 2005, the Bavaria 30 Cruiser marked a turning point in sail boat production from Bavaria. Gone were the dark woods and slightly gloomy interiors of previous models, giving way to lighter wood colours and more hatches and hull windows to give much brighter interiors. Designed by J&J Design, the 30 Cruiser proved to be an instant hit with boat buyers and has been one of Bavaria’s best-selling models since its introduction. Offered with an ‘A’ class ocean-going rating – which is rare in the 30ft production sector – the 30 Cruiser epitomises the build quality and consistency achieved by this prolific German manufacturer. Two well-proportioned double cabins create a real big-boat feel,

while the lighter mahogany woodwork offers a bright and inviting interior. Available in either deep fin or shallow tandem keel configurations, the 30 Cruiser originally sold for £50,000 – £60,000 depending on specification. Even 10 years later, good examples of the 30 Cruiser still change hands for £40,000 – £45,000. On such example is Miss Chief, a shallow tandem keel version of the Bavaria 30 Cruiser, which is available through Clipper Marine in Swanwick.
