his is the second issue of Marina under the helm of Leopard Print Media, and we’re enjoying every moment. I’d like to thank our loyal readers for their continued support, and look forward to meeting more of you and hearing about your experiences on the water as the year progresses. As well as providing a great read and some reliable advice, we hope to reward you all with yet more fabulous competitions – this issue we’re giving away two Mizzen jackets from the new sailing range by Adidas… Turn to page 98 to find out how to enter. At this time of year, my thoughts turn to spring and the good times around the corner. I know it’s still early, but I have been making the most of the few bright, sunny days we’ve had recently in preparation for an early start to the boating season. In forward-thinking mode, we’ve got essential tips from the experts at Barton Marine to ensure your boat is in peak condition ready for its first run in the sun (page 33). In the meantime, why not explore more far-flung shores? From detox holidays in Thailand (page 56) to marinas in the Adriatic and the Mediterranean (pages 52 & 54) we’ve got plenty of ideas this issue. We’re also really proud to bring you interviews with two inspirational sailors – Alice Driscoll (page 70) and Haydn Sewell (page 62). Five-time World Champion Alice talks about her life in sailing, while Haydn, who’s only 13, explains how he balances competitive sailing with his life on dry land. We hope you enjoy this issue!

he first Fjord 48 Open to be sold in the UK will be delivered in time for this summer season. Sold at the London Boat Show, this first boat will be fitted with the optional triple Volvo IPS 600 power units to power it towards 40 knots. Just like its little brothers, the Fjord 36 and 40 Open, the 48 has a luxurious double master cabin with an en suite wet room. But the 48 has a double guest cabin as well, opening up the possibility of longer trips with friends and family. And, like the rest of the range, the 48 has an amazing cockpit with tables and seating for up to 12 guests – perfect for those times when you are in party mood. At the press of a button, the tables lower to form two huge sunbeds that are ideal for just lazing around in the sunshine. But the fun doesn’t stop there… Open up the aft garage and you can launch the Williams jet tender to get you back and forth to the quay quickly and in style. Top that off with an evening of water skiing before power-winching the tender back into its safe haven and settling down for the night.

Get ready for the new season with a smart new yacht… here’s our pick of the latest motor and sail boats hitting the water over the next month

Trader

42 Signature

The Trader 42 Signature is a landmark model in the 35-year history of the Trader brand and has become one of the most popular craft in her class. This exceptionally versatile passagemaker can be run by a couple and accommodate six in comfort. This year’s updates to the Trader 42 Signature further develop her appeal as a cruising yacht and a home afloat. There are over 120 enhancements on board, focused on comfort, ease of use and refinement. The new glazing features enhance her purposeful exterior lines while also delivering outstanding sea views, and a new central heating system provides greater versatility. Underway, a docking joystick that controls the propellers and bow thruster delivers unrivalled manoeuvring control. The system has 10 |

been developed by Cummins and is matched to their latest 6.7 QSB power units, now offered in ratings up to 480hp per engine for 25-knot top speeds. Noise and refinement levels are greatly reduced by a new proprietary underwater exhaust and the Sea Torque shaft system that isolates the engines from the propeller thrust, allowing much softer engine mounts to be used. The Trader 42 Signature is CE rated Category A, unlimited offshore. Price from £445,000 (plus VAT), with twin CUMMINS QSB6.7 @ 380hp. Dehler

42

The Dehler 42 is the very latest model in the all new Dehler line-up of performance sailing cruisers. Launched at the Düsseldorf Boatshow just a few weeks ago, the Dehler 42 fills in the gap between the award winning Dehler 38 and the Flagship Dehler 42. The pre-launch advertising campaign focussed on the slogan ‘Listen to your Heartbeat’ representing the quickening pace of the pulse you can expect when sailing and cruising in this unique machine, blending cruising comfort with racing performance. The innovative interior features a unique heads layout with a multiway door that closes off just the heads leaving the washroom facilities

instantly available or creating a huge wet area with shower. For those wanting a second heads there is the option of an additional en suite compartment within the fore cabin. Sailors who want to take their racing more seriously, or who just love the thrill of performance, can take the option of a deeper draft keel with a competition rudder and a carbon fibre mast with rod rigging. Cruising or racing, the new Dehler 42 is the boat to look out for. Price from £220,000 (inc VAT). Inspiration Marine +44 (0)2380 457008 dehler.co.uk

Cormate

T27 Supermarine

Designed and developed in Norway, Cormate offer a bespoke built, classically styled range of high performance family sports boats, both cabin and centre console versions available from 21ft to 27ft. The current flagship model is the Cormate T27 Supermarine, which originally debuted at the Norwegian Boat Show in 2006, where it won the ‘Boat of the Year’ award. Fitted with Mercury’s new 4.5-litre MPI 250HP motor, it will reach 44 knots only using 1.45 litres of fuel per nautical mile at top speed; a single QSD 320HP diesel will give 49 knots at just 0.97 litres per nautical mile, pretty good for a boat that is just short of 8.5 metres in length. Unique to Cormate, each hull features a step back transom and balance plane that gives the helmsman far

more control over running attitude. This, coupled with ultra lightweight sandwich construction, gives impressive performance figures. Scandinavian royalty count among Cormate’s high-profile customers. During the Summer of 2015, King Harald V of Norway took delivery of his new Cormate T27 Supermarine to replace his Riva. Given that Cormate has at its core over 30 years of world-record breaking design and development experience, perhaps it should come as no surprise that this brand is setting the benchmark for quality and good design. Prices from £78,669.33 (inc commissioning and VAT), with 4.5L Mercury Mpi engine. Fine Design Marine +44 (0)1202 465327 cormate.co.uk Issue 7 |

Haines

32 Sedan

Val Wyatt Marine is the new Thames agent for British-built Haines cruisers, and the first boat – a Haines 32 Sedan – is arriving to the marina in Berkshire in March 2016. Developed from the Haines 31, the new 32 Sedan offers supreme hand-built quality with design that both looks stunning and cleverly makes use of every inch of space – creating a light and airy feeling throughout a boat that isn’t short on facilities or storage. The unique ‘slide and stack’ door system allows effortless flow from the cockpit to cabin, and solid wood interior finish and luxurious upholsteries give a sumptuous feeling throughout. You can make the most of any weather with huge space both inside and outside the cabins, accompanied by large windows and optional panoramic sunroof.

The huge island double en-suite cabin forward and generous galley provides excellent accommodation for those longer stays on board. The cleverly thought out design is focused on style and ease: easy to board, handle, access, and easy to live aboard – all in unquestionable Haines style. The Haines 32 Sedan, with its low-wash displacement hull, is perfectly suited to river and estuary use, with engine options from 43hp to 60hp; while for those who are looking for more ‘oomph’ its twin, the Haines 32 Offshore, offers speeds up to 22 knots. Price from £150,200 (inc VAT). Val Wyatt Marine +44 (0)1189 403211 info@valwyattmarine.co.uk valwyattmarine.co.uk

Axopar 24

Marking an exciting new entry point into the remarkable and awardwinning Axopar range, the much-anticipated world premiere of the Axopar 24 took place in January at the Düsseldorf boat show. Based upon a modular design concept, with different deck layout and accommodation arrangements that share the same twin-stepped, narrow-entry hull, these very competitively priced, performance-led newcomers show the distinctive cutting-edge style in keeping with their bigger siblings from the Axopar 28ft range. Three new models have been introduced within the 24ft/7m range, namely the AXOPAR 24 OPEN, offering an attractive all round windscreen and optional radar arch, together with the 24 T TOP 12 |

version, offering extra shade from the sun, and the 24 HARD TOP, extending versatility in more diverse weather and cruising conditions. All models incorporate a bow section with fixed seating or sunbathing area, and in front of the central helm position there are comfortable twin sofas inside, which can be used for overnight accommodation for two. In the cockpit there’s enough seating for five people, two in front and three behind. With an extensive array of optional extras, this brand new range offers boaters huge diversity. Price from £22,000 (plus VAT and engine). UK enquiries to enquiries@offshorepowerboats.co.uk axopar.fi

Bavaria Cruiser 34

Based on the hugely successful Bavaria Cruiser 33, the German boatbuilder has just launched a three-cabin, twin-wheel version and branded it the Bavaria Cruiser 34. Using the same Bruce Farr hull design that has received rave reviews from the boating press and public alike, the Cruiser 34 offers comfortable yet rewarding sailing in a stylish and affordable package. Offering eight berths in three double cabins plus the saloon, she features the same bright, spacious interior synonymous with the latest range of Bavaria yachts, created by the UK team at Design Unlimited. A generous galley and well-appointed heads compartment make her great for extended cruising. Above decks, the twin steering pedestals offer great visibility for

windward sailing, while the drop-down bathing platform is ideal for inflating a dinghy and makes access from the stern a breeze. Launched in January at Düsseldorf Boat Show, the Cruiser 34 will arrive in the UK in April 2016. Sailaway prices from £99,932 (inc VAT). Jeanneau

Sun Odyssey 449

Probably the most versatile production yacht in her class, this new model, designed by Philippe Briand, has two keel options, five sail plans and three cabin layouts with up to four double cabins, allowing you to tailor the boat to your own requirements. She has a large cockpit with twin steering stations. The Mainsheet and Genoa sheets are led aft to the primary winches at the helm, allowing single-handed sailing without leaving the wheel. Wide side decks make going forward safer and a new bow sprit with reinforced tack point allows you to fly asymmetric sails well forward of the forestay. Below decks the same attention to detail can be found: lots of rich wood, stainless steel and leather create a quality feel and finish.

Built in state-of-the-art factories in France, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 449 sets the standard for modern boat manufacture. The infusion-built deck is lighter and stronger and the 3G hull liner – unique to Jeanneau – provides direct access to high-load areas of |the hull, as well as making the boats incredibly strong. Robots cut |the windows and drill every hole to ensure exact replication and perfect fit and finish. Prices from £182,000 (inc VAT, premier trim package, electronics pack and commissioning pack). Axopar 37

With strong family resemblances to the triple award winning Axopar 28 and the entry-level 24ft range, four new 37 models have been introduced so far this year – the T-Top and Sun Top versions, both with shaded open centre consul with the latter offering an extended canvas roof for greater protection from the weather, followed by a fully enclosed Cabin version and Aft Cabin model offering four-berth accommodation. Described as the logical evolution to the Axopar family, the extra length in this range affords more options, improved functionality and greater living space all round. Seating provision is increased from five to seven, there’s a larger double berth (with toilet) in the fore cabin, and

better integrated internal storage. Kitchen and wet bar options on the 37ft allow owners to spend more time entertaining friends and family in greater comfort and for extended periods of time. The performance criteria looks good too! Practical cruising speeds between 25 and 35 knots are feasible with an estimated optimum of 28 knots for fuel efficient cruising at 2.3 litres/nm and a maximum range of 330nm to boot. Prices from £58,000 (plus VAT and engines). UK enquiries to enquiries@offshorepowerboats.co.uk axopar.fi

17/02/2016 14:13

The third member of the Beneteau MC family up-scales the brand, but does it still work at 60 feet?

A

re you an iPhone user or Blackberry? Mercedes or BMW? Rolex or Omega? Brands – they’re the standard bearer of the 21st century, particularly among premium products, tapping deep into our tribal cortex and engendering the kind of loyalty once reserved for football clubs and baseball teams. After all, to admit that the competition is better than ‘our’ brand is to admit that we were wrong – and none of us are ever wrong. Big business understands and ruthlessly exploits this phenomenon. Those people in marketing know that if they can wrap their customer up in brand identity then they’ve got an easier sell than anyone else when its time to upgrade. If you’ve got an iPhone 5 then of course your next phone will be an iPhone 6. But in the world of the premium product, brand elasticity only stretches so far. And it’s for that reason that a new Beneteau brand was created. The company wanted to cash in on the loyalty felt by thousands of Antares, Flyer and Gran Turismo owners and give them a conduit to a separate prestige marque that allows them to remain within the extended family. Indeed, it’s interesting to observe how Beneteau has positioned this new brand in the marketplace. Despite being built in France alongside all the other Beneteau models, there is no mention of the Monte Carlo range on its website. Instead it has its own dedicated website and totally separate marketing. The first of this new breed was the MC5, launched at Düsseldorf Boat Show in 2013. Right from the off it was clear that Beneteau were keen to distance this marque not only from their existing model ranges, but from everything else in the fiercely competitive 50-foot flybridge sector. With its distinctive cream and teal colour scheme, bolt upright stainless-steel trimmed stem and huge circular hull windows, no-one was ever going to mistake it for a Princess or an Azimut. The MC4 followed in 2014, its ‘mini-me’ look echoing the MC5 so closely that from a distance it is impossible to set them apart, and last year the range expanded upwards with the introduction of the MC6. As you’d expect, the appearance is pure MC. All the styling cues, from that upright stem proudly bearing the ‘MC’ designer label to the circular hull windows and distinctive colour scheme, are present and correct. In fact, from a distance it is as hard to tell apart as the MC4 is from the 5. It’s only when you get up close that the sheer size of this voluminous 60-footer becomes apparent. On board it’s business as usual, which equates to elegant, contemporary almost minimalist styling inside and out. Side decks from the large aft cockpit are wide, safe and easily accessed and lead to a flat teak-laid foredeck with a couple of unusual surprises. The black panel just ahead of the windscreen lifts to reveal two small panels. These operate what look like large square foredeck hatches but are in fact multiadjustable loungers. There’s even a remote control so that you can make adjustments as you lie on them. It transforms this often wasted space into a superb spot to while away the day catching some rays, reading a good book or simply watching the world go by. Like its sister ships, the flybridge is just vast. Choose from the huge sunpad aft or relax at the dinette, ably provided for from the bar opposite. Or take the carbon fibre framed helm seat, with space for a couple of crew members to join you on the bench alongside. Our test boat has the optional flybridge bimini in black, which integrates well with the design of the boat (although the supporting legs look a little agricultural). Inside the boat the minimalist theme continues. Beneteau have put the galley aft as per the MC5, great for catering for the saloon or cockpit and ideal for those parties that inevitably end up in the kitchen. To port, low-level storage is complemented by large shelves cunningly designed so that anything placed on them will immediately fall off the moment the boat moves. Ahead of this is a conventional saloon and at the front Issue 7 |

 This space-age helm includes an enormous and very comfortable armchair from which to pilot your craft, with responsive joystick control

 From the galley, a teak-laid deck creates the perfect al fresco dining space, with steps up to the flybridge

is a helm position that wouldn’t look out of place on the Starship Enterprise. The captain enjoys a massive armchair with a joystick on one arm that controls the Cummins-Zeus pod drive engines and a built in tracker ball on the other that interfaces with the 24 inch Simrad navigation screen. Your adoring fans can congregate on the adjacent bench seat as you drive the boat with your fingertips. The only oddity here is the single windscreen wiper and the slightly scratchy plastic finish around the helm console – both out of keeping with a boat of this class, and made even odder by the fact that the smaller cheaper MC5 has a pair of proper pantograph wipers and a nicer console finish. Down below the layout follows the classic VIP double forward, twinbedded guest cabin to starboard and full beam master cabin aft. All cabins are en suite (the third cabin by accessing the day heads) and provide plenty of storage and ample floor space. The master cabin splits the heads and shower into two separate units in each corner of the starboard side. A great idea in theory as it allows the heads to be used while someone is in the shower, but the execution is slightly

 With the galley aft, the MC6 boasts a fabulous party space in the distinctive MC colour scheme and minimalist interior design

lacking. Beneteau have kept these cubicles as small as possible to maximise cabin floor space and, as a result, the wash basin is in the cabin between them. So you have to leave the toilet before you can wash your hands and you have to step out of the shower into the cabin before you can dry yourself. It’s a small point, but I’d sooner trade floor space for privacy and convenience. Talking of trading floor space, there’s a really intriguing floor plan layout available for the Asian market. The Asian clientèle rarely sleep onboard, in fact they rarely take them out. What they use their boats for is entertaining. So, the guest cabin and forward VIP are stripped out in favour of a big dinette in the bow and a simply massive galley to starboard. The saloon is then extended aft and the upper galley banished in favour of a smaller bar area. You end up with a single cabin sixty footer – a brave choice, but the ultimate party pad! Beneteau are offering just the one engine option for the MC6, a pair of Cummins QSC 8.3 Zeus at 600hp apiece. Marina Review  The full-beam master cabin boasts acres of storage but an odd bathroom arrangement, while clever lighting and design help emphasis a bright and airy feel

 All cabins on the MC6 are en suite, offering plenty of privacy and convenience for friends and family

manoeuvrability and immediate response to the helm. And it is very very quiet – even at wide open throttle the sound meter didn’t pass 75dB(a) at the lower helm. One rather strange anomaly is the single turn of lock available from amidships to starboard, but two turns to port with a correspondingly sharper direction change. Given the lack of physical link ’twixt helm and pods (it’s entirely ‘fly-by-wire’) and the amount of programmable parameters available, I’m inclined to think that it’s a software glitch – someone hasn’t set the system up quite right. Five minutes with a laptop would probably sort it. Flat out gives 28 knots at a fraction over 3,000rpm, 2,750rpm equates to a brisk 24 knot cruise while throttling back to 2,500rpm eases the speed down to 18 knots. The MC6 proves a worthy addition to the Monte Carlo family, offering an interesting and stylish alternative to the usual mainstream sixty footers without sacrificing practicality or usability in the process. And for Beneteau it adds another layer, allowing the brand faithful to stay within its burgeoning family.

 A VIP double forward cabin provides ample space for any overnight party guests you might play host to

Drive system With Volvo Penta IPS providing the sole motive choice for the MC4 and MC5, it’s interesting to see that Beneteau have sourced Cummins-Zeus units for the MC6. There are a couple of very interesting features and one big difference with these units. The difference is that the propellers exit the rear of the pod, pushing from the back rather than pulling from the front. Cummins believes this offers better protection from debris, although Volvo Penta counter by claiming forwardfacing props are more efficient because they operate in ‘clear water’. Beyond that, there are a several useful features that come as standard with Zeus drives. ‘Skyhook’ is a system that uses GPS to ‘pin’ the boat in position, ideal for waiting for a bridge opening or holding station while deploying fenders. Automatic trim tabs are also included, constantly maintaining optimum fore and aft and lateral trim. And finally an autopilot is bundled in as standard.

With the launch of the Maritime Training Academy’s new distance learning diploma, creating your own watertight craft has never been easier

I

f your dream is to make like a modern-day Noah and build your own ocean-going craft or, on a smaller scale, perhaps tack across a lake on a dinghy inspired by Swallows and Amazons, you’re not alone. Trans-oceanic sailor Jimmy Cornell once wrote: “The planning stage of a cruise is often just as enjoyable as the voyage itself, letting one’s imagination loose on all kinds of possibilities. Yet translating dreams into reality means a lot of practical questions have to be answered.” To answer these questions, then, the Maritime Training Academy has developed a course that guides those dreams to fruition by highlighting some of the intricacies involved with building your own boat. Incorporating aspects of the decision-making, management and construction processes, students are brought one step closer to achieving the dream of building their own vessel. This diploma, with its easy-to-follow steps, will provide trainees with knowledge on various boat-building materials, and highlight the various skills that are paramount to the successful construction of a boat. The course is not intended to be the solitary element in the building

of your boat, but rather best utilised as an overall guide to what steps are needed in order to pursue your ambition. The Maritime Training Academy recommends that this course would be most effective in conjunction with further knowledge and experience in building your own boat. If you can bring the dream and passion, we can bring you the knowledge. The Diploma in Building Your Own Boat is shaped by expert knowledge and first-hand experience by professionals within the industry. Enrol and you’ll enjoy a flexible approach to learning that enables you to learn as you earn. The Diploma in Building Your Own Boat commences on 1 April 2016 and consists of 10 modules. The syllabus includes aspects of constructing a variety of boats, official documentation, mechanical systems and fit out, amongst others. All students are required to complete and pass the 10 module assignments. Diploma students are also required to sit a final examination in either April 2017 or October 2017. The Maritime Training Academy also offers the opportunity for students to attend two tutorial seminars, one mid-way through the course and another before the examination.

flare Chris Feibusch, Head of Global Marketing for Drew Marine Signal & Safety, manufacturer of Pains Wessex and Comet products, explains how to safely get rid of your time expired pyrotechnics

T

he most universally recognised signal indicating distress offshore is the sight of a pyrotechnic flare illuminating the sky, and it has been saving lives at sea for more than a hundred years. However, there is always discussion about the disposal of these pyrotechnics, because they go out of date and need to be disposed of correctly, through recognised initiatives or industry bodies. Flare disposal has become increasingly problematic for leisure boaters since the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) amended the rules for carriage and storage in 2005. It is consequently an offence to dump pyrotechnics at non-licensed sites or put them in household waste. Distress signals cannot be deployed on land, in harbour or at sea for testing purposes, practice or as fireworks. It is illegal to dump flares at sea, on land, or to let them off in anything other than an emergency, for example at a football game. Because flares contain explosives, once they are past their expiry date it is essential that they are disposed of carefully and properly. Out-of-date flares, or time expired pyrotechnics (TEP), are hazardous goods not hazardous waste, and therefore there is no requirement for councils to provide facilities for their disposal. This makes it boaters’ responsibility; but there are a variety of options available:

n Pains Wessex

In collaboration with UK distributor, Aquafax, Pains Wessex – a subsidiary brand of Drew Marine Signal & Safety – recently launched a Flare Disposal Scheme, specifically designed for expired Pains Wessex products. Any outof-date Pains Wessex flares are gathered by participating chandleries and safely disposed

n Specialist waste companies

There are specialist hazardous waste disposal companies that will dispose of unwanted TEPs, but there will be a cost for the service. This will be on top of the cost to purchase the pyrotechnics in the first place. n Local life raft service agent

of by Aquafax for a small fee. The scheme was developed as a preventative initiative to ensure pyrotechnics are not being dumped (especially not in the sea), used recreationally or abandoned. n The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC)

The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre offer a free service, whereby they can take out-of-dates flares or TEPs from the public and responsibly dispose of them. There are several locations around the country that will take the flares – simply phone ahead and book an appointment to drop them off. There is a full list of available contact points on the Government website www.gov.uk/ government/organisations/maritime-andcoastguard-agency/about/access-andopening. All you need to tell them is: n How many flares you have to dispose of n How old they are n What condition they are in n The supplier

Often when you purchase pyrotechnics, the supplier will inform you that they accept TEPs back once they have expired, which offers a straightforward and simple option for disposal. However, it is important to check this is the case before you purchase flares, and to find out where in the country the service is offered.

Local life raft service agents regularly deal with pyrotechnic flare disposals, so it may be worthwhile to speak with an agent locally based to you – they may be happy to help! It is also worth checking if your local port or marina will accept them. n Local fire brigade

It is often acceptable to make contact with the local police or fire brigade for the disposal of pyrotechnics. Neither publicly offer a refuse collection or work as a disposal agency, but in some cases they may accept out-of-date flares. n Flare amnesties

It’s also worth looking out for local ‘flare amnesties’ – businesses or local government bodies can hold a flare amnesty event, where the public is invited to go along and dispose of their flare responsibly, in return for a small donation. Ramora UK often hold these. It is of paramount importance that flares are disposed of safely. If nominated collection points are not convenient, boaters should only purchase their flares from a supplier who will take their out-of-date ones back. If in doubt, UK customers can contact their local Coastguard Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) who will advise them where to take their flares for disposal. Night Cruising Rachel Andrews, RYA Chief Instructor (Motor Cruising and Power Schemes), shares some sound advice about night cruising and the things you should consider before heading out

P

owerboating at night can be exhilarating and scary at the same time – it’s not for the faint hearted, but for those with an adventurous spirit it’s an unbeatable experience. It can feel like you have the ocean all to yourself, and a familiar stretch of water lit by moonlight under a blanket of stars is a beguiling sight. If you want to get the most out of any opportunity to go powerboating at night, it is important to be prepared.

Start by asking yourself some questions to help formulate a plan: n What type of boat are we planning to use? n Who is the skipper and who are the crew? n What is their level of experience at running in these conditions? n How long do we intend being out for? Will we need extra food or drink? n Are there any tidal restrictions we have to take into account? n Where are we going? What is the area like, are there numerous hazards to be aware of such as commercial shipping, underwater obstructions, etc? n Who knows where we are or when we’ll be back? The plan should include making sure the boat is appropriately kitted for the area you will be in, the likely duration you will be afloat (remember that fuel is not always available 24/7) and that the boat will have the required navigation lights in proper working order. Checking that everything works early on allows time to get hold of any replacement parts or to fix a loose wire connection. How experienced is your crew? Think about what you are asking of your team. Are they experienced enough to safely do the jobs you may be asking of 30 |

them, for example helming in the dark, or understanding your plan well enough to be able to navigate for the helm. Driving a powerboat in the dark for the first time can be very intimidating; doing so with little experience of driving a compass course or following the electronic navigation aids can take even a confident day time helm a bit of time to get used to. Expect the first night run with an inexperienced crew to be slow and a bit start-stop as they adjust to interpreting nav marks in the dark and taking instructions on route changes. That said, everyone has to start somewhere, just try not to be too ambitious with the first few trips in the dark, and don’t expect it to be as quick as it would be in daylight. It should go without saying that everyone should be dressed and kitted appropriately, meaning that they should be comfortable, protected from the elements by good waterproof kit, and wearing a life jacket with a light. As with all powerboating, if the boat is fitted with a kill cord, this should be attached around the leg of the helm and worn at all times when the engine is running. Make sure that, when running, everyone is securely seated with good handholds. On a RIB, people often sit on the sponsons – not ideal at any time, but at night it is vital that you know everyone is safe and secure. It’s worthwhile planning in a stop during the night cruise, be it to nip to the loo, get a hot drink, or just to have a few minutes off concentrating so hard. Looking after the crew is about making sure they are happy with what is going on, but equally about not wearing them out with huge long legs in rough conditions leaving them desperate to get off! A flask and some chocolate bars can really perk up a flagging crew.

 All your crew need to be familiar with the navigation aids on board if you’re sailing at night

Plan with care Planning a night cruise should be done with care. In the first instance, plan to go out in an area you know. A word of warning though: be careful not to be complacent – you may be really familiar with the area by day, but once darkness falls it is completely different ball game. Even if you are sure you know the place like the back of your hand, take a chart and make notes about your intended route. Although the most logical way may seem to be to write a table of distances, bearings and light characteristics, it can be hard to follow and easy to skip a line, which may have dire consequences. Drawing a visual representation of the route (including any course alterations and hazards) can be helpful, especially for an inexperienced navigator to interpret. Before you leave harbour, talk your crew through the plan. Show them the chart and any electronic navigation aids you are intending to use. Explain the route and any key points of note. Because distances can be more difficult to judge at night, let the crew know that you want them to get involved in keeping a look out and identifying marks and features of the plan. When the crew feel they have a part to play in the safe navigation of the boat, they feel part of the team and are more likely to learn about night time running than if they were just along for the ride. It pays to be prepared and careful on your first few night cruises. If you want to go through the theory before you take the plunge, the RYA Advanced Powerboat course introduces experienced skippers to the skills required to safely helm and navigate a boat at night and in more challenging situations.

 Before you set sail, make sure that someone on land knows when and where you plan to go

 Take extra care and be considerate to your fellow boaters when leaving and returning to the marina at night

Paul Botterill from Barton Marine shares the team’s top tips for getting your boat ready for the start of the sailing season

A

s the days grow a little longer and Spring sunshine is on the horizon, it’s time to check your boat is shipshape for the sailing season. Whether you overwintered your boat on dry land, an offshore mooring or at a marina, investing time now will help to keep you safe on the water, and you might even save money by spotting a potential issue before it becomes a real problem. Thoroughly inspecting your vessel is vital. To make this easier you might want to create a simple 

checklist to make a record of the maintenance you have undertaken or have paid to be done. It is essential to inspect all your safety equipment, making sure everything is in date, stored correctly and is easily accessible in an emergency. When cleaning the hull, deck and topsides, check for any abrasions, scratches or repairs that are needed. Touch up or replace antifouling paint as required. Make sure you have spare parts and tools and that, below deck, any bilge pumps are in working order. Check that electrical, lighting and navigation systems are in working order and that your engine has had its annual maintenance service. Flush and assess the water tanks and make sure everything in the galley is in shape. Look for wear and chafing on your sail battens and batten pockets and that the sail attachments are in good condition before checking the state of the ropes and rigging. Many of the Barton Marine team spend much of our time sailing, so we’ve learnt lots of tips to help keep your fittings in smooth working order and get the most out of their capability. This means whether you are cruising or racing, all you need to do is concentrate on getting the most out of your boat and having fun on the water. Blocks and mast sheaves Blocks and mast sheaves use precise engineering and should be checked for potential wear and tear before you re-step the mast. Flush the blocks and mast sheaves through with fresh water if they have been exposed to the elements over the winter. If you are using a mild detergent to remove mould and mildew, then make sure it is ecologically friendly. Don’t

use oil or grease because this attracts dirt and salt, which are abrasive. Check for excessive movement on the bearings of both blocks and sheaves, especially at the mast head. A broken mast sheave invites the halyard to jam itself at the worst possible moment, with a trip up the mast the only alternative to remove a sail. Replacement sheaves are available in a range of sizes from chandleries, or you can contact your mast manufacturer for replacements. It’s not a problem if you can’t get the exact same diameter, as long as you make sure your replacement sheave is a tight fit width-way in the mast casing to prevent the mouseline jumping off the sheave and jamming. A sign of blocks being overloaded is elongation around the fixing holes and shackles at the head of the blocks. If you are in any doubt, then it is best to replace it with a higher load block, especially with mast head blocks, which are much harder to inspect once the sailing season has started. Shackle pins are a must aloft and we recommend that they should be wire seized and taped or even cable-tied to prevent unlocking. Take time to check the condition of all your split rings and if they are not tightly coiled then replace them with new ones. Cover both sides of the split ring with a single piece of electrical or spreader tape and stick it onto itself, as this will help prevent the split pin snagging in ropes and halyards. When you are checking ball-bearing blocks the sheaves should spin freely and it is worth flushing the ball-bearing blocks through with fresh water. Any crunching or graunching noises or an uneven spin after flushing would suggest that the block has been overloaded. Ball-bearing blocks are not suitable for

high static loads, such as around the mast base, so we’d recommend using a plain bearing block or a block with a higher rolling load rating. Mainsheet traveller To look after the mainsheet traveller, rinse it thoroughly with a hose pipe and fresh water. It is important to really rinse the underbody where the ball bearings run in the car and along the track. You can use a mild detergent solution for stubborn salt deposits as it will not harm the layer of anodising. Take time to look at the state of the end mouldings on the traveller car and end fittings. Crash gybes are usually the cause of fractures and it is useful to have spare end mouldings. To check for

 When there isn’t enough wind to get out on the water, take the opportunity for a close inspection of your boat

 Rinse the mainsheet traveller with fresh water and inspect for damage

any fractures, remove the traveller car and use a short length of track to transfer the traveller car onto whilst it is being repaired. Flush through the control line cam cleats with water under pressure. The cams should open and return freely – if they don’t, unscrew them and disassemble to check for broken return springs. Worn cam jaws reduce the efficiency of the cleat and will require replacing. Go for the highest specification cleat you can afford for a longer life: for example, the Barton Marine K Cam series are made from Kevlar and Zytel. While you are checking the cam cleats, take the opportunity to have a look at the condition of the control line sheaves, because they are easy to remove, inspect and replace.

 Check genoa cars for signs of excessive movement about the sheave bearing – warning signs include uneven wear

 Your hard work now will pay dividends when you’re out on the water – you’ll be able to relax and enjoy yourself!

Genoa cars When inspecting the genoa cars, check for signs of excessive movement about the sheave bearing. A small amount of play is probably acceptable, but any more than this may cause the sheave to lock up under load. Keep an eye on warning signs including excessive wear to one side of the sheave, which indicates it is not rotating. Sheaves can be replaced as long as the car has been regularly flushed through and looked after to reduce the risk of heavy corrosion of the aluminium around the spindle. It might sound like the list of maintenance jobs is endless, but from our experience it is essential to get the important ones sorted before the start of the season. Minor jobs can be saved for a sunny day in dock or at anchor, or those calm days when there just isn’t quite enough wind to get out on the water!

s a life-long motoring enthusiast, I’ve been extremely fortunate to get behind the wheel of some truly fantastic vehicles in my time – from luxury cars to lowly little hatchbacks, SUVs to sports cars, even the odd van or two – but there’s one brand that stands apart for me, and that is Porsche. When it comes to testing a boat, skill and experience notwithstanding, it’s comparatively easy to explore the full potential. Open water trials allow you to push the engines to their maximum operating window and you can throw the vessel around with ample room to spare. Do the same with a road car on today’s busy congested streets and things get a little more tricky. Try to find those limits in a 321bhp, £50,000 high-performance sports car like the Cayman S on a public road and you’re likely to run into problems with the law very quickly. So when Porsche invited me up to Silverstone – home of their

UK Porsche Experience Centre – for a day driving their latest and greatest models on a private testing track, that was one experience I wasn’t about to miss. Located on the main perimeter road that circles around the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, the Porsche Experience Centre boasts nearly 5km of specially designed track that incorporates a handling circuit set up like a challenging country road with interesting and unexpected gradients, flowing corners and camber changes. There are also low-friction areas, including a water jet covered 7% slope to mimic driving on ice, a kick plate designed to induce a slide or spin, a polished limestone circuit for understanding oversteer and understeer, and two long straights where you can safely explore full acceleration and braking potential, and high-speed direction changes. All of which combine to provide a thorough testbed to safely extract every ounce of performance from both car and driver. 

The Cayman Launched in 2005, it’s easy to dismiss the Cayman as little more than a hard-top Boxster, and it’s certainly true that both models share much of their components, interior, engines and even styling. However, that fixed roof has allowed Porsche to build a car that is both stiffer and sportier than the open-top Boxster as well as providing far more luggage space – something the Boxster has always lacked – making it a rather more practical choice. If outright performance is all you’re interested in then the flagship 911 range offers the ultimate rewards in that respect. But the lighter, more compact, purely two-seater Cayman is the truer drivers’ car. With a mid-engine configuration, the Cayman provides nearperfect weight distribution and handling balance. Where the 911 Carrera coupe has gone for pure luxury, Porsche’s more focussed approach towards the Cayman has resulted in a car that rewards its driver with fantastic steering poise, keen pricing and a communicative, engaging drive that outshines its heavier and slightly numb-feeling Carrera brother. And the performance gap isn’t as large as you might think. Where the base-spec Cayman makes do with just 271bhp from its Boxstersourced 2.7-litre flat-six engine, the Cayman S features the larger 3.4-litre from the out-going 911 Carrera, de-tuned by 25bhp or so. Coupled to a sensational six-speed manual gearbox with perfectly spaced ratios, that 3.4-litre, flat-six engine takes just five seconds for the 0-60 dash – granted, the excellent PDK 7-speed

auto with paddle-shift might shave 0.3 seconds off that, but for sheer enjoyment and driver engagement nothing quite beats the feeling of a manual shift, particularly when it comes equipped with an automatic throttle-blip feature to match the revs on down-shifts. The Driving experience Out on the open road you get a sense of what the Cayman is capable of. Threading through corners, the electric power steering is perfectly weighted and the feeling of outright grip is immense. You can place the car precisely where you want to with minimal effort and complete confidence. Take it to the safety of the Experience Centre track, though, and the car really comes alive – the knowledge that there’s no other traffic or road hazards to temper your enjoyment means you can charge at the bends and really find the limits, and those limits might just amaze you. Trail-braking into a fast corner, the front wheels load up and the feeling of poise is sublime – the car just grips, and at speeds that you’d never try on public roads. But it’s the slower, tighter corners that really surprise and it’s here that you get a true understanding of handling and the driver aids at your disposal. With such feedback as this car offers you can dive into bends and feel the grip through your fingertips, provoking a rear-wheel slip on demand and fully exploiting the Porsche Torque Vectoring and the mechanical limited-slip differential to keep everything under complete control. Braking is also immense. Porsche state that before their models

Marina Wheels

A closer look The interior of the Cayman S is an exercise in form and function. Beautifully assembled with the highest quality leather, everything falls neatly to hand enhancing driver engagement. Deep, comfortable sports seats hold you perfectly, even when sliding around the track. The gearlever is positioned tight and close to the wheel to aid ergonomics and all the functions of the on-board computer and climate controls are intuitive to find and select. The steering wheel puts your hands in just the right place and is pleasingly devoid of the myriad buttons for phones, cruise control and audio so many manufacturers feel we need. The first generation Cayman was a little cramped, but the latest model with its slightly longer wheelbase offers increased comfort for those over 6ft tall, and a generally more spacious interior with great visibility (although parking sensors are an optional extra should you feel the need). Luggage capacity is good too, at least for a two-seater performance car. Open the boot and you’re welcomed by a shallow loading area that covers the engine bay. Although not vast, Porsche claim this area has a volume of 275 litres. There are two deep storage bins either side of the engine cover in the rear and a little space behind the seats, though not much if you’re a tall driver. Up front and things prove more useful with under-bonnet storage offering 150 litres of deep, well-shaped space. Not class-leading, perhaps, but certainly far more practical than the Boxster and much of the competition. Living with a Cayman S With a car designed for high performance it’s safe to say it should stand up to the every-day rigours of on-road use. Porsche build quality is exceptional and they always score well in the driver surveys so reliability should be of little concern. General servicing and running costs can be a little high, but CO2 emissions are acceptable at just 211g/km. Fuel efficiency isn’t too bad either with the 3.4-litre Cayman S offering 31.4mpg combined (and 34.4mpg with the PDK gearbox). Explore that potential too often, though, and your fuel costs will rocket. Later in 2016 the Boxster and Cayman models will switch to a new line of flat-four-cylinder turbo petrol engines – good news for the CO2 and fuel efficiency figures – but gone will be the glorious flat-six wail of the current engines. Marina’s opinion When it comes to driver involvement and sheer enjoyment the Cayman S is peerless. Unless you need the additional cramped seats or phenomenal performance offered by Porsche’s flagship 911 range, the Cayman really is the better option.

Porsche Experience Centre The Porsche Experience Centre is a world-class driver development facility where clients can receive coaching from some of the country’s most highly qualified and experienced Driving Consultants. It offers courses designed with drivers in mind, to build skills and confidence in equal measure. The Porsche tracks have been designed to push both car and driver to the limits. Replicating actual roads and real-world hazards, the individual tracks cater for all levels – whether you are looking to improve your confidence behind the wheel or develop advanced driving techniques. Each Porsche Driving Experience offers one-to-one instruction tailored to your experience and requirements. For more information on the Porsche Driving Experience please call 01327 855911 or visit porsche.com/silverstone/uk Handling Circuit Designed to accurately replicate a challenging country road, with varying cambers, blind corners and highspeed bends.

Ice Hill Simulating sheet ice with computer controlled water jets, this area allows drivers to explore general car control and specific handling characteristics. The Straights A safe, controlled environment to fully explore how a Porsche accelerates and stops, and to try Porsche systems like Launch Control and Lane Change Assist. Kick Plate A moveable metal plate set flush with the road is triggered remotely to induce a loss of rear wheel traction and allow drivers to experience slide correction. Low Friction A polished limestone surface creates the ideal environment where over-steer slides can be provoked, corrected and held.

can leave the factory they must be able to stop from any given speed in half the time it takes to reach that speed – in a car that can reach 60mph in just 4.7 seconds (PDK) that’s quite something, but what’s more impressive is the chassis dynamics under heavy braking and sudden changes in direction – the kind of situation you might encounter when needing to take emergency avoidance action. Porsche Stability Management, fitted as standard, continually monitors direction, speed, yaw velocity and lateral acceleration maintaining stability and traction even at the limits of dynamic driving. In normal conditions PSM monitors for oversteer and understeer, applying selective braking on individual wheels to restore stability – and it works supremely well. Under braking that same system predicts your actions. If you suddenly release the accelerator pedal, PSM automatically prepares for your next action: the braking system is precharged so that the brake pads are already in light contact with the brake discs and maximum braking power is therefore achieved much sooner. Brake assist detects a panic-braking situation and generates the brake pressure required for maximum deceleration. Experienced on the track it takes your breath away, experienced on the road… Well, it might just save your life.

MDL’s

Thames Marinas Bray, Windsor and Penton Hook – tranquil marinas with direct access to London and beyond

M

DL Marinas has three fantastic marinas across the Thames, offering exceptional facilities, first-class customer service and unbeatable locations. With direct access to London, plentiful cruising opportunities and superb surrounding restaurants, bars and places of interest, Thames boaters are truly spoiled with MDL Marinas. MDL’s most northerly Thames marina is Bray Marina, which is situated in a beautiful country park setting close to Cliveden House, a National Trust property with extensive Italianate gardens and woodlands. The marina is also a short journey to the beautiful village of Cookham, home of the Queen’s Swan Keeper – who can sometimes be seen in his traditional costume. Downstream lie the historic towns and villages of Windsor, Eton and Datchet, where you can find MDL’s Windsor Marina. Also located in a tranquil garden setting with a large river frontage for easy mooring, this 175-berth marina prides itself on being one of the most attractive marinas on the Thames. There are many options for a day’s cruising, with several riverside inns, stately homes and gardens to visit. MDL’s third and final Thames location is Penton Hook Marina, nestled on the banks of the River Thames. Set in 80 acres and boasting 575 berths, it is Britain’s largest inland marina and is situated on one of the loveliest stretches of the River Thames. It is close to the vibrant town of Staines-on-Thames and approximately one mile downstream from Runnymede (also run by the National Trust), where King John signed the Magna Carta. The marina provides first-class amenities in sheltered waters and boasts four facility buildings. There are also purpose-built pontoons for narrowboats and Dutch barges, including a number of moorings for vessels up to 30 metres in length. Bray Marina, Windsor Marina and Penton Hook Marina all pride themselves on having very active yacht clubs – holding a full programme of social events and functions – as well as boat training lessons and handling competitions. In addition to each marina’s busy entertainment and activities schedule, the trio of marinas host superb on-site chandleries and class-leading facilities. They are also staffed by highly trained personable teams who pride themselves on caring for your boat and your every boating need. When berthing your boat, it’s important that you have peace of mind, and MDL’s security is second to none. It will come as no surprise that each of the marinas have been recognised by the prestigious ‘Gold Anchor Award Scheme’ with the maximum five gold anchors apiece being awarded for exceptional service and facilities. All of these stunning and tranquil marinas are within a few hours cruising of each other and offer reciprocal berthing for Freedom Berthing members, which gives complimentary access to over 100 marinas across the UK and Europe. Restaurants and entertainmenT With a variety of entertainment on your doorstep, Bray, Windsor and Penton Hook are sociable marinas, ideal locations for river cruising and also perfect for exploring the city lights of London, the historical town of Windsor, or the high streets of Egham and Richmond.

esser known than its sister cities Dubrovnik and Split, Šibenik offers one of Croatia’s most impressive superyacht and marina networks. Best discovered by boat, its dreamy blue seascapes gently waft you to shore, where quaint streets lead to attractive squares and contemporary shop windows blend with the majestic and stylish architecture of vanished centuries. Culturally, Croatia’s single most important architectural monument of the Renaissance age, the Cathedral of St James, is here – a triple-nave basilica dating back to 1298 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby, the breathtaking Krka National Park is home to dozens of stunning waterfalls, including a series of 17 in the space of 450 metres. Among a number of cultural and historical monuments in the Park, the best known is a Franciscan monastery from 1445, with amazing artefacts and a phenomenal library. The newly opened D-Resort Šibenik is making the town an even more desirable destination for anyone looking to discover Croatia. Located on the D-Marin Mandalina Marina, D-Resort Šibenik is the first luxury resort in the area, offering 63 rooms, 6 suites and 3 exclusive villas – nearly all offer utterly stunning views over the marina and further afield. With 429 berths in the sea, 79 of which are specially designed for yachts up to 140 metres in length, D-Marin Mandalina Marina is linking many of the world’s most prestigious yachting destinations to create the ultimate experience and opportunity for all yacht owners and guests.

D-Marin Mandalina Marina is the perfect destination to explore the expansive turquoise ocean of the Dalmatian coast. Alongside its beauty, according to Croatian authorities and the yachting industry, the marina is also one of the safest berthing spots due to its naturally protected location. The marina at D-Resort Šibenik has received many accolades for its impressive reputation including: five golden anchors from The Yacht Harbour Association, making it a quality assured berthing spot since 2011; inclusion in the five anchor category by The Ministry of Tourism of Croatia (January 2011); a five star diamond award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences; and the marina was awarded the Blue Flag for Environmental Compatibility and Care in 2015. Around the hotel there are four bars and lounges: Hotel Roof Exclusive Lounge, Yacht Club Bar, the Pool Bar – located in the main pool area – and the Lobby Bar in the main lobby area. The hotel’s top-floor restaurant offers stunning panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and Šibenik Old Town. The hotel’s spa in the heart of Šibenik is the perfect place to relax and recharge with a private Hammam, two saunas, a steam room, three single treatment rooms, a couple’s treatment room and extensive relaxation area. For guests wanting to get active, the air-conditioned D-Gym has the latest Techno Gym equipment and fitness courses are available whilst basking in an exceptional view, making it the ideal place to refresh and rejuvenate. A True Optimist

British Optimist sailor Haydn Sewell was only 11 when he qualified to sail for team GBR in the 2014 European Championships in Ireland. Now aged 13 and currently sixth in the UK rankings, he has his immediate sights set on the Optimist World Championships, with Olympic hopes further down the line. Marina caught up with him to find out more…

Profile Name: Haydn Sewell Age: 13 Class: Optimist Years racing: 6 Best result: 6th in UK rankings. 7th in 2014 selection trials, which meant qualifying for Team GBR for the European Championships. Home water/club: Solent. Gurnard Sailing Club and Royal Lymington Yacht Club. Sponsors: Crewsaver, North Sails, Wightlink and SailSpy.

“From the start, we were impressed with Haydn’s maturity. He’s a good ambassador for Crewsaver and represents the brand well, as well as being highly motivated, so we knew he’d go far” Hannah Burywood, Crewsaver

Marina: How did you start sailing? HS: I was very lucky, in that I met lots of top sailors before I started sailing because of my dad’s job at the time [Haydn’s dad, Tim Sewell, was Skandia’s Brand and Sponsorship Manager managing sponsorships including Skandia Team GBR, Skandia Cowes Week and Skandia Geelong Week, before moving on to become Head of Marketing and Media at the International Sailing Federation (ISAF)]. I first met Iain Percy when I was a week old! All this got me interested in sailing. Apparently I first went sailing when I was 18 months old in Geelong, Australia, but the first time I remember was going out in a Pico with my Dad from UKSA in Cowes.

 Learning from the best: Haydn benefits from coaching with Matt Mee, RS 200 National Champion 2013

 A model sailor: sponsorship commitments include modelling for a Crewsaver photo shoot before launching the Crewsaver Phase2 dinghy range

Marina: Is it a family activity? HS: My Dad used to sail, but he doesn’t get the opportunity much anymore because he’s always taking me to events and training. We all get involved at the Optimist events and my Mum quite often helps on the Regatta Fleet committee boat, but she doesn’t sail. We have an RS Feva at Gurnard SC, so we sometimes go out for some fun in that too. I have a 10-year-old sister, Freya, who also sails an Optimist. She is in the Regatta Fleet at the moment. Marina: Are you naturally competitive, and do you feel much pressure to get good results? HS: Yes, I’m very competitive! It’s really important to me to get good results and I’m very performance driven. I have the best fun sailing when I’m doing well. On the flip side, I feel a lot of pressure. It can make it tough sometimes so I am having to learn how to deal with that. Marina: How many hours a week/month do you train? HS: I train or race most weekends – we’re away from home and off the Isle of Wight about 40 weekends a year. During the week I do general fitness training and play other sports, like squash. Marina: How do you balance sailing/racing and school life? HS: I do a lot of my homework at school and make sure it’s done during the week so it doesn’t get in the way at weekends. Sometimes I have to miss a few days off school for training or events if they are a long way away, but I don’t mind that! Mum and Dad always tell me that if I don’t get my school work done and try hard then I won’t be able to sail, so I get it done! Marina: How has sailing had a positive effect on your life off the water? HS: Sailing really helps me off the water, especially at school. It helps with knowing how to deal with the pressure of tests and exams and has made me confident when speaking to teachers

Marina people and asking for help and advice. My sailing and the coaching also helps with target and goal setting at school. I like helping out with the coaching at my club, too, and teaching others how to sail better. Marina: Do you have to look after yourself particularly well in order to stay fit and healthy? HS: I try to – I’m quite small and light for my age so need to eat to grow! I try to make sure I have a good balanced diet. I really like fruit and vegetables so it’s not too difficult. Before an event I try and eat lots of carbs at breakfast and before we launch, normally pasta, but sometimes it’s hard to eat when I’m nervous. My favourite quick snack on the water is Tracker Bars. My favourite meals are sushi and tapas. I like a nice big roast dinner after racing and training too. Marina: Do you have a mentor, or someone that you look up to? HS: I’m very lucky to have met Bart [Andrew Simpson (1976– 2013)], Ben Ainslie and Iain Percy – they have all really inspired me to become the best sailor I can be. I even sailed with Iain once and helmed the Star, which was an incredible experience. Marina: What has been the best bit of advice that you’ve received about racing, and who was it from? HS: I’ve had a lot of very good advice from our friends Cordelia and Richard Ellis, in particular: ‘lose loudly and win quietly’. I also read an article by Hannah Mills and Saskia Clarke about Opi sailing that said ‘try not to take it too seriously… Keep it in perspective, remember you are at the beginning of your journey, just learn as much as you can and don’t worry too much about the results.’ It’s advice that I try to remember in those moments when I’m really feeling the pressure to do well. Marina: Where in the world have you raced, and what’s the best place that sailing has taken you? HS: I’ve raced in Monaco, Turkey, The Netherlands, Bermuda, France, Italy, Ireland and all over the UK. I’ve enjoyed everywhere that I’ve travelled, and being with sailors from other countries is great, but Bermuda is probably my favourite place in the world so far.

 Haydn knows the ropes: rigging up pre–training at Warsash Sailing Club on the River Hamble, Southampton

 It’s all about balance: Haydn find that the skills he has developed as a sailor help him with life on dry land too

Marina: Are there any races that you’d really like to compete in? HS: I’d really like to go to the Optimist World Championships. We have a selection event for this every year at the beginning of May and the top five sailors qualify. I would also really like to do the Easter Regatta at Lake Garda. Marina: How have you arranged sponsorship? HS: Crewsaver are my main sponsor, and provide me with all my dinghy sailing kit from their Phase2 range. My parents helped me arrange that sponsorship – I had to write about my sailing and what I wanted to achieve. North Sails offered to help when I was moving from Regatta to Main Fleet because I was doing well but my sails were so bad. Practical support from WightLink has helped with ferry costs when I travel to events and training, an opportunity that came about as part of the Isle of Wight Talented Athlete Scheme. SailSpy kindly gave me a GroPro because they were impressed with what I was doing and had been reading my blog haydnsewell1.blogspot.co.uk. Marina: Where do you hope that sailing will take you professionally? HS: I really want to be a professional sailor more than anything else – I would like to compete at the Olympics and then the America’s Cup. But I also like coaching too, so that’s a possibility for the future.

Find out more The RYA has recently announced a new partnership with Crewsaver giving its members at least 20% off the entire Phase2 Dinghy range, so RYA members can get hold of the kit that Haydn wears at a great price.

Academy

Skipper If you want to turn your passion for sailing into a career that enables you to travel the world, skippering a private yacht could be the right move to make…

hether you’re considering a longterm maritime career, looking for a change of lifestyle or want an unusual gap-year challenge, becoming a professional skipper can open up a world of opportunities. Founded in 2013 and affiliated with six Royal Yachting Association training centres, the Skipper Academy offers young, experienced sailors the opportunity to become a professional skipper. Building on your existing sailing skills, the Academy will teach you the practical skills you need to skipper a yacht of inexperienced sailors – from manoeuvring in ports and marinas to the logistics of rafting fifty or more boats together – as well as offering an education in the business side of things, including insurance, contracts, and crew management. The Skipper Academy was set up by Julian Brockhurst, a former skipper himself, to help fill the increasing void for competent and professional skippers on The Yacht Week. The team realised the need to unify the charter industry and create a high standard for all staff involved. The Academy

66 |

is a way to teach and examine whether alreadyexperienced skippers have what it takes to deal with the pressure and perform. The Skipper Academy is not a learn-to-sail course. This is a high-end MBA of sorts, where the expectations when you apply are already very high. Since the Skipper Academy was first launched, around 320 skippers have been through the course. This year it’s estimated that around 200 people – from school-leavers to career-changers in their 40s – will learn how to skipper. With the benefit of this expert tuition you will be in high demand with crewing agents around the world, and if you successfully complete the course you are guaranteed summer work. The Skipper Academy offers you the opportunity to work with a number of charter companies, such as The Yacht Week and Yachts and Friends, in locations that include Greece, Turkey, Sweden, the British Virgin Islands, Italy, Thailand and Croatia. The Skipper Academy training takes place in the British Virgin Islands and Croatia, and prices start at €695. Find out more at skipperacademy.com

Alex McGaviney

Age 26 Canada

What’s your sailing background?

I’m from Vancouver, British Columbia, and I’ve been sailing recreationally my entire life – I took my first steps on my parents’ boat. I moved from competitive dinghy sailing to keel boat racing, to working as a sailing coach as soon as I hit the age requirements. When did you complete your Skipper Academy course?

I did the Skipper Academy course in April 2013. I was at university having a beer with an old friend who had just spent the summer in Europe – he told me about this amazing sailing trip he went on called The Yacht Week. He showed me the trailer they have on YouTube and was explaining how awesome his skipper was. He said I would be perfect for the role and would love it. A few clicks through The Yacht Week website lead me to their training partner Skipper Academy. So I packed my bag and got on a flight.

y

Did the course live up to your expectations?

It was better! For 10 days I was onboard and training with people who would become my closest friends; it was so essential to develop this bond – the ‘brotherhood’ (and ‘sisterhood’), as we call it. We rely upon each other so much, and building that trust was vital for successful teamwork in the summer. Far beyond that we learned so much about working professionally. Although I was already a skilled sailor, this was my first entry into the professional side. I was used to racing in a team that was just as skilled as I was. My academy instructor, Dennis, grilled me on everything. We practised breaking down nautical commands into simple, clear instructions in layman’s terms. Where did you go on to work after finishing the Academy?

How to apply Register your interest in the Skipper Academy and find out more at skipperacademy.com. Prices start from €695, but with just two weeks of work on The Yacht Week or Yachts and Friends you can recoup that cost. +44 (0) 203 695 2892 info@skipperacademy.com skipperacademy.com

After graduating I worked a full summer season for The Yacht Week, then did a couple of private charters in Croatia. In September, I had every intention of heading home and finding an office job relative to my business degree, but I found myself in Antibes, the superyacht mecca of the Mediterranean, in search of a job as a deckhand on a large luxury charter yacht. I had heard stories of amazing global itineraries, private chefs, and outrageous tips… Partly due to luck, but mostly due to my experience from the summer and contacts I had met, I found a job quickly and was soon on a flight to join a 200ft yacht in Barcelona. I worked onboard for seven months after crossing the Atlantic, then three months straight on back-to-back charters, but after a quick yard period I realised that this wasn’t the yachting career I wanted to pursue – I wanted to be in charge of my own yacht. So I quit and went back to The Yacht Week, this time as a lead skipper. Skipper Academy asked me to help instruct and then manage one of the routes for The Yacht Week for my third season. Here I am in January 2016 with over 100 stamps in my passport and I still haven’t returned to Canada for that office job. What has been your worst/most difficult/scariest moment?

I think my biggest challenge has been a Mediterranean-style mooring in a 20kt side-breeze with a crew that doesn’t even know what a cleat is. We practised this over and over until it became a motor skill so that we could focus on our surroundings and the safety of the guests instead of how to handle the yacht. Issue 7 |

Before joining the Academy, I had done plenty of cruising and racing around Australia, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to travel the world while working and meeting amazing people. I had been working for a big corporate company doing the 9–5 grind, but I always wanted something more. I was unbelievably lucky that everything fell into place perfectly; this was because of the support of the Skipper Academy team and my sailing instructors. I was able to finish my theory for RYA Yachtmaster, organise my flights and everything from Australia with perfect timing. I passed Skipper Academy, did my Yachtmaster exam in Gibraltar and was ready to experience a season in Europe. It was like nothing I’d ever done before. It’s been two years since Skipper Academy, and when I reflect on what I have done, the people I have met and the amazing experiences I’ve had since switching to a life on the water I can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner. I have sailed in Greece, Croatia and the British Virgin Islands, met some amazing friends from every country in the world, and been to amazing parties in unforgettable locations, which are a bonus of the lifestyle you sign up for being a skipper working with flotillas. How has your Skipper Academy training helped your career?

Once I passed the course, I was offered work in Greece for a whole season and was excited to work with Skipper Academy’s biggest partner, The Yacht Week. I have also had opportunities to work for Skipper Academy’s other partners, which include private charter clients such as Yachts and Friends, Cosmos Yachting and Navigare Yachting, which are based around the world. Today, I am the Global Skipper Manager for Skipper Academy, looking after over 300 skippers and hostesses who work for us around the world. When training up our new skippers at the Skipper Academy, we get to put all the potential skippers through their paces and decide whether they have what it takes. I am about to head off to Thailand in the coming weeks to work over there skippering boats for great groups of people over Christmas and New Year’s Eve, exploring the islands around Thailand and, of course, having lots of fun along the way! What did you learn on the course?

A lot of the people I attended the course with said it was like a seven-day RYA Yachtmaster exam (which is normally only about six to eight hours). I was tested in every way to see if I had what it took to be a Skipper Academy skipper. At the end of the week, I needed to prove that I could be trusted to take out the examiner’s family on a charter… We covered skills I had never come across sailing in Australia, but which are applicable to sailing in the Mediterranean. These included Mediterranean mooring (parking stern to a riva/dock with either a mooring line or your anchor), building rafts to the shore of 20-50 boats and building circle rafts of 10-40 boats. I also learnt about crew management, which is vital when taking out a group of guests who may have never been on a boat, let alone sailed a yacht. This is the most vital skill I learned and it gave me the confidence to progress in my career as a skipper. 68 |

Age 23 Netherlands

When did you graduate from the Skipper Academy?

I completed the Skipper Academy in 2015. One of the main things I’ve learnt is how all the forces on the boat really work, so instead of just ‘doing something’ and hope you park or turn the boat right, I’ve learnt to anticipate to how the boat will move. The other thing that they teach you really well is that you can’t expect to have guests on your boat that know how things work. You have to explain in nonboating language what they have to do when you dock/anchor. What have been your biggest lessons learned on the job?

How to handle situations you’ve never been in. In the case of inexperienced crews, you’re the one in charge and you really have to be clear about that. And also unexpected heavy weather conditions – then you really see how important teamwork with all the skippers is. Has there been anyone who has been a particular help?

There have been a couple of standout stars. Jason Glew is very helpful, and always really chilled and calm. He helped me out with diving up an anchor in one of my first weeks. One week I had a damaged prop, so the engine wasn’t working. On the last day Jack Blake towed me all the way back to the base marina because there was no wind – really good example of helping each other out and teamwork! The Skipper Academy emphasises the importance of teamwork, because when you work together your more efficient and safe. Do you feel this was a worthwhile exercise/job?

Definitely! Currently, I study Civil Engineering, and in a few years I’ll probably be working in that field as well. For me skippering is a side job/summer job, but absolutely a great learning experience. I’ve learned to be more flexible, handle unexpected situations and above it all, the huge network of contacts you build up is great! Not many of my friends (especially my age) have a network of people from all over the world that you get from working with Skipper Academy and The Yacht Week. What difference do you think the Skipper Academy has made to your career?

Well for a start I am a qualified skipper, and this has opened up a lot of opportunities and made me much better at sailing. I also got a lot more confidence in the choices I make due to my training with the Skipper Academy. If you want something, especially when it’s out of your comfort zone, just do it! Do you have any advice for potential skippers?

Skipper Academy has to be one of the best things I have done. It has benefited me so much in terms of my sailing and also in how I handle situations. It is so much fun because you are with such a great team of people, but it is hard work. My advice would be to work hard and listen to everything you’re told – no matter how good you think you are you can always improve and it’s so important be able to keep your crew safe at all times. Try to find a good balance, be a fun skipper for your crew, have enough sleep and always skipper safely!

World champion sailor Alice Driscoll talks exclusively with MARINA magazine about how her love of sailing started, why she became so involved with the marine industry, starting her own successful communications agency and what she plans to do next… MARINA: How did you get into the marine industry? AD: Back in the 1980s, my first professional job was working in industrial market research, for the technology and engineering sector. As much as I enjoyed this, I wanted to work for myself, so I set up my own business in public relations (ADPR) working for marine technology and navigation brands – including Garmin, which is once again our client! In 1991 my husband and I chose to live in Somerset, start a family and go sailing at our local sailing club in Axbridge, near Cheddar. I’ve been involved with marine industry bodies for as long as I can remember. I was on the Development and Marketing Committee of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and ended up on RYA Council, which was then – and still is – chaired by The Princess Royal. Today, I’m Board Director for British Marine and sit on many of its sub-groups, and am also still very involved with the RYA because I firmly believe in collaboration and cooperation between these two major industry bodies. MARINA: Tell us about ADPR… AD: ADPR was founded in 1991. We’re one of the leading marine specialist communications agencies in the UK, working with a variety of local, national and global companies from marine technology, electric engines to technical sailing kit and everything in between. We’re based in the heart of the South West and also work with non-sailing clients, for example a European patent attorney firm and local accountancy company. We have a team of 10 marine-enthused PR professionals and often enjoy a day on the water. Although not all sailors, I work hard to share my sailing passion with the team and we all get involved in sailing events – for example, the London Olympics in 2012, where I was lucky enough to be working in the media centre for the Olympic sailing venue at Weymouth. MARINA: When did you sail for the first time? AD: When I was five. My father wanted to get into the sport, so we went to our local sailing club which was in Nairobi, East Africa. I was a lightweight crew in an Enterprise – the class I still sail today! I met my husband through sailing and so our children were also introduced to it at a very young age. MARINA: Have your children always sailed with you? Do they still sail now? AD: We wanted to introduce them to our favourite sport and share our love of sailing – as would any parent. However, our children haven’t always been the biggest fans. This may be because I capsized our youngest, Will, on one occasion… We didn’t want to force them into the sport, but naturally over time they have embraced it and now thoroughly enjoy going to our local sailing club, Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club, on a regular basis and taking part in national and championship events.  70 |

 Alice with now Associate Director, Kate O’Sullivan, enjoying the sunshine on a team sailing day

I have to say (proudly, of course) that my daughter Libby has achieved more in her sailing career than I have! At 18, she’s now a qualified sailing instructor (something I am about to train for) and has won the coveted first lady crew prize in the Enterprise Class for three years running! MARINA: How does sailing fit into your life now? AD: Sailing has always been – and will always be – my passion. It’s my hobby and I love sailing as much as I can. Working at ADPR and being active on many committees for British Marine – I’m pretty much always doing something sailing-related! I tend to dinghy sail almost every weekend, and I’ll sign up to other big races, such as the Round the Island or Women’s Keelboat Racing as often as I can. But I always love it when the whole family is out on the water in different boats, racing against each other! MARINA: What classes have you sailed in? Do you have a favourite? AD: I’ve always sailed in the Enterprise Class – it’s close, tactical, one-design racing, which I love. I’ve owned an RS200 and we have a J24 we sail in Plymouth. But I also love the J109 and J80s for the camaraderie of sailing in a team. I was lucky enough to be on a Baltic 72 for the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) in 2013. Sailing across the Atlantic is something that has always been on my bucket list and I was delighted to have that opportunity. It was an incredible experience – but quite a scary one as well at times.

72 |

MARINA: How hard is it to get into sailing? It is as expensive as people think? AD: It’s really not that hard or that expensive. There’s a common misconception that sailing is elitist and exclusive. But that’s wrong. Find your local club and ask them if they run any ‘start sailing’ sessions. Or find a local sailing school and have some classes. Lots of clubs hold open days, and are happy to encourage families who have never sailed before to get out on the water. It’s also not as expensive as people may think. You don’t have to own your boat, or buy lots of gear. You can charter boats, crew with friends and family, and if you do decide to buy there are plenty of good deals on second-hand beauties! MARINA: Can you make a career out of sailing? AD: Absolutely! You don’t have to be an Olympic champion to be successful in sailing. There’s so many careers, opportunities and support within the industry. A good friend and marine journalist, Sue Pelling, wrote a book Sail for a Living, which is amazing! You don’t have to be a sailor either – you can be an instructor and earn money training others, you can be boat builder or engineer, or you can be like the ADPR team – work in PR and marketing for marine companies. The list is endless! My advice would be do what you love. If you love to sail, sail! But have a back-up plan and go to college or university too (especially one that has a good sailing team), so that you have a Plan B.

Marina people MARINA: Is there help out there for young people keen to get into the industry? AD: Yes! Industry bodies, such as British Marine and the RYA, work tirelessly to encourage youngsters and newcomers to get out on the water and enjoy their experiences. One of our main aims is to spread the word and prove how accessible sailing can be. You don’t have to have sailors for parents or own a boat, you just have to give it a go and love it! Charities like UKSA also work hard to get young people and adults out on the water. They have made schemes and campaigns to get everyone from young people to adults on the water, and that’s exactly what we need! MARINA: Do you have a stand-out memory of sailing, or any heart-stopping memories? AD: The most memorable experience would be when I was three months pregnant with Libby. I was helming in the Enterprise World Championships in Goa, India. The weather was horrendous and the wind was howling, it was the last race of the event and even the rescue boats had been taken off the water because of the conditions. We finished and then had to rescue crew from another boat before we could get onshore. We then had to pack up our boats straight into the container ready for shipping back to the UK in record time. It was both scary and invigorating and extremely exhausting. I think probably being pregnant and sailing in those conditions is not advisable! Another stand-out moment was when I started sailing with my lovely and now long-standing crew: ‘Sharky’ (Andy Massey). I was meant to be competing in the World Championships in 1991 in Zimbabwe and at the last minute my helm couldn’t go. Rather than drop out altogether, I decided to charter a boat myself (called PG Tips), learn to helm, and enlisted the help of Sharky as super crew! Not only was it wonderful racing conditions on Lake Kariba (passing room for the hippo was a common on-the-water call) but I won the First Lady Helm in the race – making me a World Champion. Sharky and I still sail together and have won quite a few events together since that first memorable one. MARINA: Where’s your favourite place in the world to sail, and why? AD: The beauty of sailing is that it takes you all around the world, and you meet some incredible people who become life-long friends. I am very lucky to have sailed in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, South Africa, Ireland and all over the UK. There are some huge waves in Durban, South Africa – which are certainly an eye-opener! Wherever I’m sailing with friends or family will be my favourite place at the time. MARINA: Who is your inspiration? AD: I’ve got a huge level of admiration for Dame Ellen MacArthur and the Foundation she has just launched, which works through education, business innovation and analysis to encourage companies towards adopting a circular economy. I also whole-heartedly admire my children. Libby for doing so well in her sailing career so far, and Will for doing what he loves most – which is cycling first and windsurfing second. It’s ok that sailing comes third! MARINA: Are sailors a superstitious bunch? AD: Yes, I believe so! However, I’m not. I’ve tried wearing lucky pants and having a ritual before sailing or racing, but it hasn’t worked for me. I just make sure I enjoy the adventure every time I get in a boat and set sail. The fighting talk and beers afterwards are always fun too!

MARINA: So what’s next for you? AD: This month (February), I’m returning to India and Sri Lanka with Libby for a holiday and a bit of sailing. We’re staying with the friends I met many years ago through the Enterprise Championships and we’ll sail like the old times – just with my daughter as well this time. I’m also working with British Marine to increase accessibility of sailing and get as many people – young and old – out on the water to experience this amazing sport. Sailing teaches us such so many life skills – how to solve problems, how to navigate, understand weather, wind and tides and how to work both as a team and individually. I’m also planning to get my Dinghy Sailor Instructor qualification with my son, Will. I’ve been meaning to do it for so long and not had enough time – so this is the year! f your ship’s dog loves a dip in the water, here’s one accessory you won’t want to be without – the Doggy Bag dries and cleans your wet muddy dog in minutes, keeping your interior smelling fresh and fur-free too! It’s the amazing microfibre material that makes this blanket so special. With just a quick rub down, Doggy Bag absorbs the bulk of the water off your dog and peels off sand, dirt and thick black mud, then traps it in the bag keeping your boat, car and house clean. And because the material dries out faster than regular cotton towels, it doesn’t smell of damp dog, so there’s no need to machine-wash it every time. Nine times out of ten, you’ll just need to give it a shake clean outside before you use it again. No more wet stinky towels, and a lot less doggy laundry. The Doggy Bag is available in five sizes from XS (tiny terrier) to XL (great Dane). Buy now online at microfibrestore.co.uk/petcare (RRP £49 to £89).

Presented in very good condition, she has had just two owners from new and has fine inventory with teak laid cockpit and seats, fixed cockpit table, large spray hood, Raymarine colour chart plotters, auto pilot and DSC VHF, to name but a few. Oceanis 361 Clipper The Beneteau Oceanis 361 Clipper was designed by Berret Racoupeau in 2001 as a successor to the Oceanis 352. This family-sized cruising yacht combines ease of handling with a well laid out interior and the quality of finish one would expect of a Beneteau Oceanis. This is a yacht that can be easily handled by two people in moderate to bad weather, and her balance and responsiveness under sail and smooth motoring have won her many friends among blue water enthusiasts. Below deck there is plenty of room for four. The separate U-shaped galley is undoubtedly the boat’s showpiece and it offers generous stowage, both dry and refrigerated, good counter spaces and a luxurious cherry-stained mahogany finish. There is good natural lighting and 90 |

ventilation throughout the yacht and the large saloon makes her an excellent choice for entertaining. The head enclosure is also of a very generous size and has a separate walk-in shower with a slatted teak seat. The double forward berth sleeps two adults and the aft cabin has plenty of space and hanging storage. If you’re looking for more space for your family and friends and an upgrade from your usual 25 or 30-footer, this Beneteau 361 Dunikolu is definitely worthy of consideration. To help you easily select the right clothing for your chosen activity, Adidas clothing and accessories are categorised into five self-explanatory ranges: Offshore, Inshore, Speed, Clubhouse and Accessories. This new marine range has benefitted from Adidas’s technical expertise, design heritage and global presence in mainstream sports. and designs have worked well for us in other sporting disciplines and, just as an example, I would consider the advance made with our marine footwear range and grip technology – some with patented drainage systems – to be streets ahead of many well known marine brands.” The benefits are equally reflected in the clothing ranges; from ocean-going GORE-TEX garments through to Adidas’s own patented CLIMALITE, CLIMAPROOF, CLIMAWARM and CLIMAHEAT technologies, the Adidas marine range is fully inclusive with individual colours, sizes and designs for men, women and children of all abilities taking part in all kinds of on-the–water pursuits. How do you get your hands on this 21st century gear? You can order online at adidassailing.com or seek out selected well-known marine chandlers. Or you could enter this issue’s fantastic competition – Adidas are giving away two Mizzen jackets from the Inshore range worth £450!
