I

’m happy to admit that I’m a James Bond fan, completely under the spell of 007’s particular brand of louche charm. So for me, the opportunity to own Bond’s very own boat – the utterly beautiful Soufrière from Casino Royale – is one not to be missed… Should I have the spare thousands needed to become her next owner, I would be at the front of the queue. But until then, I’ll have to be satisfied with gazing lovingly at her on display at London on Water (turn to page 10 to find out more). From a stunning boat to a breathtaking town of the same name, having just returned from a trip to the fabulous Capella Resort and Marina in St Lucia (page 54) we’re all about the luxurious things in life, so what better time to find out more about investing in pearl jewellery (page 72)? And for the realists out there, we’ve got a round-up of lightweight waterproofs (page 77), and the chance to win a fab pair of Chatham deck shoes (page 98). We’ve plenty of new and brokerage yachts to tempt you this issue, from Sunseeker’s award-winning Predator 57 (page 16) to the Elan 30 on test (page 20), an ex-demo Explorer 40 Sedan (page 85) to the only pre-owned Prestige for sale in Europe (page 87). There’s still plenty of time to upgrade before the summer season gets into full swing!

uxury yacht designer and builder Spirit Yachts will be showcasing their iconic 54-foot yacht, which starred alongside Daniel Craig and Eva Green in the Bond film Casino Royale, at this year’s London on Water show at St Katharine Docks from 4–7 May. Officially named Soufrière, this sophisticated yacht was sold following her movie début and spent subsequent years cruising and participating in competitive racing. She recently returned to Spirit Yachts to complete a refit and is now for sale through Spirit’s brokerage department. Spirit Yachts CEO and head designer Sean McMillan comments, “Soufrière was designed specifically for Casino Royale following the production company’s search for a classically elegant, unique, British-built yacht. The scene in which Daniel Craig and Eva Green glide into Venice onboard Soufrière granted her a place in British film history. What better place to re-launch her to the public than London; the home of James Bond?” Describing the filming of Casino Royale, McMillan adds, “Probably the most challenging voyage for Soufrière came

during filming in Venice when we had to take the rig in and out ten times; she was the first sailing yacht to go up the Grand Canal for 300 years.” On display in berth C09 at the London show, Soufrière is designed to appeal to a distinguished owner looking for an iconic British yacht with the style and performance to match. This elegant, modern classic yacht is suited to an owner who desires a balance of racing and leisure cruising. Down below, Soufrière has a forward owner’s cabin as well as a double cabin aft, both of which have en-suite facilities; ideal for owner and guest privacy. Sporting a powerful rig and an impressive displacement of just over eight tonnes, Soufrière excels on longer passages when racing but still has the capacity required for cruising. During her recent refit in the Spirit yard in Ipswich, Suffolk, Soufrière was given a fresh coat of paint on her elegant ice-blue hull and all external varnish was stripped and revarnished where necessary. The interior woodwork has been re-varnished where required and all equipment, from the engine to the rigging, has been inspected and serviced. Issue 8 |

Haines

26

Haines Marine, the British-built brand of river and offshore cruisers, have just announced the launch of their new four berth starter boat: the Haines 26. The design of the 26 has come about from recognition of the demand for both quality and functionality in the smaller boat market. In a relatively small length this boat offers flexibility and generous space inside and out. This cleverly designed boat offers flexibility to cater for: a family of four sleeping in four dedicated berths; six adults comfortably dining; or a group of eight enjoying a very sociable day out on the water. Further, with an air draft of below 7ft, this new model allows

customers to explore what are often the prettiest parts of waterways that larger boats cannot discover. With undisputable Haines build quality, this boat is sure to appeal to a wide market. Whether you’re after a family-friendly weekender, a day cruiser for riverside moorings, or a boat well equipped with all the luxuries required for longer stays onboard, Haines believe with this new addition to their range they may have just the answer. EXPLORER

58 Pilot House

Following an extensive period of design and development, Explorer Motor Yachts are delighted to introduce the Explorer 58 Pilot House into their range of displacement and semi-displacement trawler yachts from 40 to 62 feet. This brand new model takes the renowned and respected Explorer construction and interior finish and combines it perfectly with a stylish yet classic exterior to produce a totally fresh approach to the world of semidisplacement, trawler yacht design. The superb hull form and exterior design has allowed Explorer to introduce a new feeling of light and space into the saloon and pilot house area along with a raised forward galley and interior flybridge access. Below decks the generous beam and

increased hull volume results in a truly superb, full-width en-suite owners’ cabin and a further two more than generous, guest and VIP cabins served by their own heads and shower compartments. Bavaria

E40

A classic contemporary design with clever use of space and efficiency are the central themes of the new Bavaria E40. There will be sedan and fly bridge versions. Central place of life on board of the Bavaria E40 is the spacious saloon. From the central helm stand, to the completely fitted galley – you can enjoy the perfect 360-degree view. any boat manufacturers claim to listen and respond to their customers’ needs, but few take customer contact to the level of Elan CEO Matjaž Avšic. ˇ Despite a startling resemblance to James Bond villain Maximilian Largo (Never Say Never Again, 1983), Matjaž is one of the most affable company bosses you’ll happen across. He started his marine career almost by accident: after hiring out a friend’s motor boat and being asked for further charters it quickly dawned on Matjaž that there was a gap in the market for motor boat charter in Croatia, an area dominated by sailing boat charter. He set up in business with a small fleet of boats in 2000, after a few years realising that it would be advantageous to operate with a single make of boat. The purchase of several Elan Power boats followed, which lead on to the opening of his own Elan Power dealership in Croatia in 2005. In 2010 the opportunity to take over the manufacturer presented itself, and today Matjaž heads up the entire company. Matjaž’ first task was to put a new smaller Elan into production, and this is where his unique brand of customer contact came to the fore. Because for a decade he personally handed over every charter boat and sat with every family upon their return to discuss what they most liked about the boat and what they felt should be changed. The information gleaned over a thousand personal contacts is distilled into the boat you see before you; the direct result of that intensive feedback. There were two hard points to this project that were almost contradictory. Firstly, due to the licensing laws in some countries, the boat had to have a LOA of less than 10 metres. Secondly, the boat had to have two separate sleeping cabins so that a family could use it without having to continually convert the saloon, as is so often the case with boats of this size. Tony Castro, the innovative naval architect from the UK, was commissioned to square the circle and come up  with the impossible – a challenge he rose to with aplomb.

 Coming on board via the bathing platform is a great way to make an entrance on this small but mighty boat

The danger with trying to pack so much into such compact dimensions is that the results can often be most kindly described as ungainly. It’s a bullet the Elan Power 30 has thankfully dodged – this is first and foremost a good looking boat. Use of black mullions and wrap-around tinted glass give the hardtop a sleek, rakish profile and the fabric sliding roof section in white integrates well. High topsides are effectively disguised by a thick coloured hull band that rises as it flows forward. Our test boat is finished in dark blue Awlgrip paint set off by stainless steel bezelled portholes. Only the rather cheap looking stick-on ‘Elan Power 30’ graphics let the side down slightly on closer inspection. The easiest way aboard is via the bathing platform (extended as an option on this highly specced example) through the central transom door into the large single level cockpit. Clearly designed as a social alfresco living area, Matjaž tells me he was keen to avoid the

 Large overhead skylights flood the galley and saloon with light, and create a feeling of space in this Tardis-like interior

22 |

‘sitting on a bus’ row of seating, instead opting for a more inclusive layout that utilises all four sides of the cockpit around a large folding table. Alternatively, lower the table, drop in an infill and you have a huge sunbed. Further forward, the double helm is shifted away from the edge of the boat by a large chart table to starboard. Useful in its own right, the real purpose of this is to discreetly provide good headroom into the mid cabin. Five-inch wide side decks easily accessed via steps built into the coamings either side of the transom complete the deck area. Protected by guard rails that sweep back to the transom and augmented by handrails along the hardtop, they amply aid access forward to the cabin top sunpad or to the foredeck for anchoring. All boats are a compromise, and given the size of the cockpit in this sub ten metre boat, you could reasonably expect the bulk of that compromise to be found down below. But actually this is the area

 The heads is beautifully finished, compact but not cramped, and surprisingly spacious for a boat of this size

 The master cabin gets a proper double berth, headroom and floorspace, although small hull windows are an Elan trait

arguably cleverest of all. Light wood (‘Fineline’ matt-finished Oak) helps the feeling of space, as do the large overhead skylights – particularly useful since the modern fashion of large hull windows doesn’t seem to have reached Elan yet. Talking of overhead, the headroom is remarkable given the low profile exterior. A particularly clever touch is the split galley, allowing it to be pushed back into the corner, freeing up space for the heads to starboard and sofa to port. As a result, the forward bulkhead is positioned further aft, meaning that the master cabin gets a proper double berth and floor space – something you won’t always find in the competition. The one area of compromise is in the mid cabin, where the single level cockpit floor necessitates limited headroom over the bed. Ultimately you’re just not going to cram this much in to a boat of this size without feeling the pinch somewhere. Engine options include a single Volvo Penta D6-400 sterndrive

diesel or a pair of Volvo Penta D3-220 motors, again on sterndrives. Interestingly, the single is apparently no more economical than the smaller twins in practice, although it does offer a purchase cost saving. As a result, the latter is the preferred option. They’re well judged in this boat, giving smooth (if not especially quick) acceleration and topping out at about 34 knots, which results in a comfortable mid 20 knot cruise. The more central driving position gives great visibility in turns because the helmsman suffers less from the blind spot effect of the hardtop roof, and that chart area offers a reassuring back-up to the chart plotter positioned just to the left of the wheel. The Elan Power 30 is proof of what can be achieved by the vision and drive of a man whose unique approach to customer contact grants him an almost unlimited database of information to draw on. It’s a boat focussed directly on satisfying customer demand.

 Splitting the galley allows for it to fit neatly into a corner, freeing up space for the heads and a sofa

 The headroom in the mid cabin is obviously limited, but it’s the only compromise in such a small craft

eanneau have announced that their class-leading 519 flagship from the Sun Odyssey range is now available with electric self trimming sail handling system. This innovation, developed in partnership with Harken, is designed to allow the skipper to handle sails from the helm using a touch screen. Once happy with the trimming, s/he can also set the system to automatically adjust the sail to take account of changes in wind speed and direction. The system can also detect the angle of heel; this will then ease the sheets when a gust of wind makes the boat heel beyond the desired limit. The system is designed for shorthanded sailing, with the

intention of making it easier, safer and more comfortable; it’s bound to be a big hit with families, especially those with younger children, as well as long-distance sailors, who will be able to leave the helm on autopilot in variable winds to do other tasks. The system works by collating existing data from the boat’s electronics, wind direction and speed, the course over the ground and the rate gyro compass of the auto pilot. This information is then used ingeniously to work the winches and control the sails. It’s just another great example of the innovation of Jeanneau working in partnership with its suppliers to make boating better for its customers.

Spinlock BAR T2 Vest

The newest piece of crew kit for BAR helps the team work in harmony with their boat while remaining safe at all times

B

ritish marine technical apparel specialists Henri Lloyd and Spinlock have been working in partnership for the past 18 months to design a range of elite technical products for Land Rover BAR, the British Challenger for the 35th America’s Cup, to give the team every possible competitive advantage. The kit worn by the sailing team incorporates the latest in fabrics, design and new technologies, which allow the sailing team the flexibility, agility and comfort to focus on winning. But it must also provide the protection required when racing in the extreme inshore racing environments of the America’s Cup, where boat speeds can reach up to 50mph, resulting in the chilling effect of constant high winds combined with a deluge of fast-moving spray. The design of the new Spinlock BAR T2 vest focuses on four core design elements that have been identified by the team:

Flotation Ultra-soft compliant foam is cut and shaped to ensure the minimum interference with the crew’s activities on the boat, but gives secure flotation when needed. Dry-coated materials ensure the product absorbs minimal water. Impact Due to the high speeds and the potential for collision and capsize, the Spinlock T2 vests features D30™ motorbike-grade, shock-absorbing body armour. Aerodynamics & Fit The PFD is sculpted and tailored to integrate with the Henri Lloyd Team Sailing Kit, to further maximise the aerodynamic profile of the sailors. The jackets must also be easy to remove. In the event of a capsize it is essential that crew can remove and discard the flotation device within 10 seconds if required.

© Lloyd Images

Accessories Recessed in to the back of the jacket, to minimise bulk and reduce aerodynamic drag, is an emergency air cylinder, used if trapped under an upturned hull to give vital extra minutes. On the front of the jacket, accessible with either hand, is a recessed rescue knife, providing quick release from any entrapment. Issue 8 |

The Green Blue HELPING YOU to MAKE SUSTAINABLE BOATING SIMPLE

T

he Green Blue is the joint environment programme created by the Royal Yachting Association and British Marine for anyone who enjoys getting out on the water or whose livelihood depends on it. The team’s objective is to help boaters and boating businesses to minimise their impact on the environment by raising awareness, reducing harmful discharges, reducing environmental disturbance and encouraging sustainable choices. With support from The Crown Estate’s Marine Stewardship Programme, and working with partners that include marinas, charter companies and manufacturers, the small Hamble-based team raises environmental awareness and identifies eco-friendly products to make boating in the UK as sustainable as possible. Striving to protect the future of our marine ecosystem, The Green Blue aims to make efficiency savings, help boaters and boating businesses minimise their impact on the environment, and safeguard the waters and habitats we enjoy and rely on. Nobody wants red tape and regulations, so The Green Blue works hard to avoid this by encouraging people to voluntarily change their habits and become more environmentally friendly every time they go boating. You can follow The Green Blue’s journey on Facebook and Twitter (@thegreenblue) and readers can also meet the team and find out more about sustainable boating at thegreenblue.org.uk

The Green Blue’s top ten tips for sustainable boating…

1 2 3

Let nothing go overboard – even an apple core takes six months to degrade in the water. Recycle on board and bring waste ashore to recycle in the marina. Buy a reusable sports bottle to fill up at an event rather than a single use plastic water bottle.

4 5

Use phosphate free, environmentally friendly cleaning products on board. Check that your face scrubs and body washes don’t contain micro beads that end up polluting the sea.

32 |

6

Get rid of black water responsibly – use a pump out facility if your boat has a holding tank or empty the heads as far from shore as possible.

7 8 9

Put a bilge sock in the bilges to absorb hydrocarbons from oily bilge water. Refuel with a fuel collar to catch drips and splashes.

Keep a clean hull and remove weed from your anchor before stowing to stop the spread of alien species.

10

Slow down and keep your distance if you spot marine wildlife.

Marina goes in search of the ultimate luxury SUV for today’s Driver and finds something a little different in Thor’s latest chariot

B

ang & Olufsen, Ikea, H&M, Abba… If there’s one thing you can rely on from the Nordic countries it’s that they’ll always do things a little differently, and they do it very well. When I test drove the XC60, this car’s smaller sibling, last year I was suitably impressed – the passive and active safety features on offer set it apart from the competition and the decision to pair a luxury SUV with only two-wheel drive in the search for better fuel economy was inspired. Fast-forward 12 months and I’m sat at the wheel of the XC60’s considerably larger brother, the all-new XC90, and it’s a very similar proposition. To start with, this is no burly off-roader – sure, it has four-wheel-drive and clever hill-decent features and it’ll certainly manage the odd dirt track, but from 

its initial launch in the early 2000s, Volvo made the brave decision to design a luxury SUV that would work exceptionally well where the majority of owners would actually use it – on the road – and sales of the first model proved they’d made the right choice. With the launch of the all-new XC90 the Swedish team took an already successful product and set about making every part even better. Where the competition boast about approach angles, locking diffs and terrain-responsive technologies, Volvo wax lyrical about efficiency, safety and driver aids ideal for today’s congested roads. A closer look If you’re in the market for a luxury vehicle that can accommodate seven adults in comfort then your choices are limited. Some of the larger MPVs offer a third row of seats, as do a few of the other SUVs in this segment – like Audi’s Q7 and the iconic Discovery, but in most cases the seats are only suitable for occasional use. The XC90 seating has always been the ace card in Volvo’s deck. Effortlessly folding with one hand and offering class-leading comfort for passengers up to 170cm tall, the XC90 is a genuine sevenseater. The middle row can even slide forwards to provide increased legroom for rearmost passengers, and gaining access to that third row is as simple as it is in most three-door hatchbacks. The boot space isn’t sacrificed either – with all three rows of seats in place there is still 314 litres of storage. Dropping both sets extends the boot space to a cavernous 1,868 litres. In line with its luxury credentials, the interior boasts the finest nappa leather, woods and brushed metals along with stunning details like the crystal glass gear lever made by famous Swedish glassmaker Orrefors, and understated but beautifully crafted switch gear that operates with the expensive feel of a high-class audio system. Talking of audio, the XC90 features one of the highest quality systems available, with a 1,400 watt Class D amplifier connected to 19 Bowers & Wilkins speakers all connected through the latest in sound-processing systems to manage timing and co-ordination of the speakers and deliver world-class live performance sound. The audio, navigation and climate system are all controlled

through the most modern user interface on the market – Sensus. The myriad buttons and switches that clutter the interior of most cars have all been replaced by a touch-screen that dominates the middle of the dash and features pinch and swipe gesture control just like you find on an iPad. It really is so easy to use it makes competitors’ systems look clumsy and basic. The only possible drawback of Sensus is a tendency for the screen to get covered with greasy finger smudges just like an iPad does, although this problem affects all touch-screen interfaces to a lesser or greater extent. In every respect the XC90 is a hi-luxury offering – it just goes about its business in a more understated stylish way than many of its shoutier competitors. Living with an XC90 It’s not just the interior where Thor’s colleagues have thought a little differently – where the likes of Range Rover, Audi and Jeep fit big 3-litre V6 diesels, Volvo have elected to keep the XC90’s engine to a 2-litre twin turbo diesel in the pursuit of economy. Granted, this could

 ‘Thor’s Hammer’ DRL lights dominate the confident face of the new XC90 – the LED headlights are fully featured and include active bending for cornering assistance and active high beam. They light up the road spectacularly

have been a risk, but actually the D5 units 225bhp allied with 470nm of torque do a perfectly acceptable job of propelling this huge vehicle down the road at a very respectable pace – 0-60 takes just 7.4 seconds. Helped in no small part to the clever weight-savings – the XC90 is well over half a tonne lighter than the Discovery and 900kg lighter than the Q7. At times the D5 engine can sound a little gruff, but for the most part it purrs quietly and returns very good mpg too. For those needing more power, Volvo offer the T6 320bhp petrol and even the T8 petrol hybrid, but even these make do with just 4-cylinder engines. Although running in the standard springs rather than the air suspension enjoyed by its higher-spec brothers, our test car remained surprisingly comfortable and controlled on the varied Aand B-class roads that makes up my regular work commute. Tighter turns at high speed show well-controlled body roll and the steering is precise, if a little uncommunicative. Not bad for a car of its size, and proves once again that designing for the road, rather than off-road has worked to Volvo’s advantage.

 Sensus – Volvo’s comprehensive and state-ofthe-art infotainment system includes highlights such as Apple Carplay, allowing you to mirror your iPhone and access internet radio and other phone-based applications

Volvo’s obsession with safety reaches its zenith with the XC90. The Intellisafe Pro package fitted to our test car – an option most buyers will spec – adds to the already comprehensive cyclist and pedestrian warning, and auto-brake collision warning systems. Drivers gain adaptive cruise control, blind spot indication with an alert that sounds in the event of traffic crossing your path, rear collision mitigation, queue assist and lane-keeping aid – the last of these can prove a little unnerving as it’s designed to steer the car semiautonomously should you drift out of your lane. As with all these luxury SUVs, the XC90 is a very large vehicle – it’s both longer and wider than the Grand Cherokee I tested a few issues ago – yet it’s surprisingly nimble and proved far easier to park. Marina’s opinion Smarter, safer and cleaner – with the sophisticated cool, understated style associated with the very best of Nordic design. There’s so much to love about the new XC90. Potential buyers with a large family should look no further.

push the boat out More than 65,000 people have discovered sailing through the RYA’s Push The Boat Out national ‘have-a-go’ festival since its launch in 2012. Now in its fifth year, a record number of clubs and centres nationwide will again welcome all-comers to get afloat over nine days in May. So what can Push The Boat Out do for you?

A

s the days grow a little longer and Spring sunshine is on the horizon, it’s time to check your boat is shipshape for the sailing season. Whether you overwintered your boat on dry land, an offshore mooring or at a marina, investing time now will help to keep you safe on the water, and you might even save money by spotting a potential issue before it becomes a real problem. They say that small is beautiful and when it comes to sailing sometimes that really is the case. Big boats are fantastic, no disputing that, but sometimes nothing can quite match the fingertip feel of mastering a dinghy in breeze, the camaraderie of a friendly sailing club or even learning the ropes for the first time as perennial cruising ‘crew’. Whether you want to sample life on the not-quite-so-ocean waves, or you have family and  friends who might be keen to discover another side of the sport, RYA Push The Boat Out, Issue 8 |

Last year’s event was incredibly popular, with over 25,300 people taking part

which runs over two weekends and five weekdays from Saturday 14 to Sunday 22 May, gives everyone the perfect chance to have a go at sailing. Events can include dinghies, keelboats, windsurfing, big boats and even RIB rides. “We really did have a mix of people, from those who saw our sign on the beach and walked up to have a go, to people who had seen our event promoted in the local press to friends of our members who no longer had an excuse not to have a go too,” commented Phil Blurton. Phil is the Sailing Secretary at Hastings and St Leonards SC, who last year ran a Push The Boat Out event for the first time. More than 60 people got out on the water over two days with them, and so successful and enjoyable did Push The Boat Out prove for the club they have signed up to run another this year (14-15 May).

“We have run Open and taster days in the past,” continues Phil, “But they lost a bit of momentum a few years back and stopped. Push The Boat Out provides a focus and some structure and people, both club volunteers and those who came along for the first time, felt like they were part of a well-organised national event. It was great. “We made sure everyone who wanted to sail registered and got a slot, and with a Beachmaster, an officer of the day and safety boats on the water even the most nervous first-timer could feel reassured we were taking a professional approach. “The members who had volunteered to take people out on their boats loved it too, and there was a very special feel around the club. It certainly brought everyone together, which ultimately is what life at a sailing club is all about.” Talking numbers Nationally, 2015 Push The Boat Out saw almost 28,500 newcomers attend events at almost 350 locations across the UK, with over 25,300 people taking to the water. Clubs reported that around 2,000 individuals and over 1,500 families had taken out club memberships from Push the Boat Out, while over 3,000 people signed up for follow-on activities, including additional taster sessions and start sailing courses. Also an RYA Training Centre, Hastings and St Leonards, for example, filled their September RYA Level 1 two-day introduction course from Push The Boat Out – the first time they had ever run a course that late in the year – while three of these people are booked on to the club’s full RYA Level 1 and 2 courses this spring. The true essence of Push The Boat Out is to

Marina Lifestyle breakdown any perceptions people may have around the accessibility and inclusivity of sailing as a sport by giving them a real taste of the buzz that comes from being on the water and the warmth of the sailing community who love to share their enthusiasm. It also enables sailing to showcase itself as a lifelong activity with options and pathways for people to stay in the sport. Having started as a one-day spectacle celebrating the start of London 2012, Push the Boat Out grew into a weekend event, before becoming a nine-day extravaganza for the first time last year. This extended the opportunities for clubs and centres to run events either on a weekend or weekday so people have even more chance to find a local event on a day or evening that suits them. It also eases the weather stress a bit. As Phil continues: “We chose to run our event over two days in case the wind wasn’t blowing in the right direction, making launching off the beach difficult, or the weather wasn’t good enough to actually run taster sessions. “It turned out we did the right thing as the weather on Saturday was bad so we could only show visitors our facilities and talk about what we do. But Sunday couldn’t have been more perfect and we had a constant flow of people getting afloat.” Seizing the day With the America’s Cup World Series returning to Portsmouth this summer (21-24 July) and the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in August and September, sailing will undoubtedly enjoy its turn in the national sporting spotlight again. Duncan Truswell, RYA Sport Development Manager,

admits Push The Boat Out will play a leading role in getting the excitement around sailing ramped up heading into a heady summer of sport. He added: “Over the past four years Push the Boat Out has enabled thousands of people who may never have even considered giving sailing a go the chance to try the sport for free or low cost. Many of these have since become club members and volunteers and are inspiring others to follow their lead and try the sport. “Clubs and centres continue to get better and better at providing a warm welcome, and we are really excited for this year’s Push the Boat Out, which I’m sure will prove even more popular. 2016 is gearing up to be the perfect year to get into sailing.”

 Club members really enjoy sharing the sailing experience with keen novices

 The event is a way to encourage more people to take up sailing around the UK

How to get involved More and more clubs and centres are signing up to run Push The Boat Out events all the time. Chatham Maritime Marina Steeped in history, but boasting excellent facilities and set for expansion, this marina offers the best of both worlds

C

hatham Maritime Marina boasts a fantastic location, situated on the River Medway in Kent, with easy access to secluded rivers and estuaries or the cruising waters of the East Coast. Owned by Europe’s leading marina operator, MDL Marinas, Chatham Maritime Marina lies a stone’s throw away from the truly stunning Historic Dockyard of Chatham. The maritime history of Chatham dates back to 1547, with the first record of naval activity being the rental of two storehouses on Jyllingham Water. Half a century later, Chatham had become a major base for the navy of Queen Elizabeth I, and it has served many of the ships that fought against the Spanish Armada. For 414 years Chatham Royal Dockyard provided over 500 ships for the Royal Navy, and was at the forefront of shipbuilding, industrial and architectural technology. Over the next four centuries more than 400 warships were constructed in the Dockyard, including Nelson’s flagship Victory and Achilles, the first iron warship built for the Royal Navy. Offering easy links to London and the South East, Chatham Maritime Marina is a welcome home and visiting port for thousands of boaters each year. Set to become one of the main leisure destinations in Kent, the marina is at the heart of a multi-million pound leisure and retail development. Set for expansion MDL’s Chatham Maritime Marina is investing £500,000 in a state-of-the-art 54 berth marina extension, which will include new 12m and 16m berths. This exciting new development is due to open in May 2016. New berth holders at the marina can expect the best in fully serviced berths and the extension will increase the total number of berths at the marina to 412. Trevor Barnes, General Manager at Chatham Maritime Marina, commented on the investment: “The marina is at the heart of a multi-million-pound leisure and retail development, so it made sense for us to invest in these additional berths and the pontoon to accommodate the extra interest coming into the area. “The marina makes the perfect base for

Premier’s

Brighton Marina

Newly refurbished and upgraded, this East Sussex marina is home to a state-of-the-art floating yacht club

S

et on the East Sussex coastline, Brighton Marina offers value-for-money in-water berthing for over 1,200 boats. Over the past two years, Premier Marinas has invested over £2m in upgrades at the marina, including pontoon refurbishment and finger pier replacement works, new electricity supplies to pontoons, improvements to security and to the boatyard infrastructure, plus new onsite dredging capabilities. Premier Marinas has also invested in its on-site maintenance and cleaning team, which now totals four staff, all dedicated to keeping the marina clean and in order. Last season saw Brighton Marina become home to a stunning new £1m floating yacht club; manoeuvred into its permanent mooring between pontoons six and seven, off the western concourse, at the end of July 2015. The state-of-the-art yacht club started welcoming members and guests from September. One of the UK’s largest floating buildings, at 3,500 sq ft, its relocation and regeneration is the result of a Brunswick Developments, Intermarine and Premier Marinas collaboration. Moreover, the striking wave design of the building was created by Stewart Henton, a local architect and BMYC member. Alongside a 2015 spend of £120,000 on regular

Marina spotlight marina dredging, this year Brighton Marina will take delivery of its own in-house dredger. The £800,000 cutter suction dredger will be deployed to dredge beneath pontoons and finger piers, as well as sub-jetty clearance works and dredging of the minor fairways and approaches. Operating with extraction-based pumping via a discharge pipe, dredging operations will be possible in weather too extreme for conventional trailer suction hopper or backhoe methods. Parallel to the dredging investment, work has also been undertaken to re-deck existing fingers and pontoon walkways in the inner harbour berths and hammer-heads in the outer harbour this year. Now in phase three, this programme completed in January with £205,000-worth of new finger pontoon installed over the Christmas period and with plans to continue replacing finger piers beyond 2016. This year has also seen the refurbishment of Brighton Marina’s West Jetty facilities, an investment of over £60,000, in addition to a general renovation, included new heating, flooring, and LED lighting. Incidentally, Brighton boatyard has had a face-lift, with new security cameras and access control being fitted within the boatyard and a brand new gate installed in the far north/east corner, along with a three-metre-high fence replacing the old fence along the east wall. Brighton Marina has raised the standard of berthing for boats over 14 metres and, as a result, the marina has become increasingly popular with large motor boats. Brighton Marina already holds The Yacht Harbour Association’s Five Gold Anchors award for facilities and service and Premier’s Prestige berthing offers an impressive extras package for boat owners with large boats. Prestige hammer head berths have been either replaced or re-decked throughout the outer harbour, with another five hammer heads at the west of the marina coming back on line in July. Introduced in 2012, Brighton’s Prestige berthing includes quality dock fenders for safer berthing. Boat owners can also look forward to a designated berth with a personalised boat nameplate, a yacht club membership and free WiFi.

ilford Marina, the only marina in West Wales to be awarded four Gold Anchors by The Yacht Harbour Association, has announced that it will be celebrating its 25th anniversary during the forthcoming 2016 season. The Marina has grown in popularity in recent years due to its proximity to the magnificent cruising waters of the Milford Haven Waterway and the commencement of an extensive investment programme by the Port of Milford Haven to improve customer experience. The first phase of a major, multi-million pound redevelopment of the area around Milford Marina began with a £6m investment in new lock gates to speed up access for yachts and fishing vessels. Installation of the new lock gates formed part of Visit Wales’ Coastal Tourism project, partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, to encourage tourism along the Welsh coastline. The Port of Milford Haven, which owns and operates Milford Marina, is planning further investment later this year to attract new shops, homes and businesses into the area. The Marina improvements are part of an overall strategy to make Milford Haven and Pembrokeshire’s unrivalled coastal waters the marine leisure hub for west Wales.

Since opening, Milford Marina has gone from strength to strength expanding from the original 225 berths to the current 320 berths. The Marina welcomes permanent and visiting yachts up to 16 metres, together with related services and lift out facilities and there are lots of exciting events planned to celebrate its 25th Anniversary. Commenting on the 25th Anniversary, Natalie Britton, Director of Operations for Pembroke Port and Milford Docks said, “We are very lucky to have 22 miles of outstanding, sheltered cruising waters on our doorstep. Being next to the only Coastal National Park in the UK makes our Marina quite exceptional and perfect for yachtsmen seeking breath-taking scenery from a base that has great facilities and good quality amenities. We are confident that the ongoing improvements to facilities and services at Milford Marina will provide a major advantage to our many permanent berth holders and allow us to welcome an even greater number of boat owners during 2016.” The Marina was established in 1991 within the original fishing harbour upon which the town of Milford Haven was founded. Today the area remains steeped in maritime history which can be traced back to Viking times.

 The recent expansion at Milford Haven Marina means there are now 320 berths available

omprising 550 berths and additional swinging moorings, with access at all states of the tide, Suffolk Yacht Harbour marina offers the ideal stopover while cruising along the many picturesque rivers of the east coast. The iconic red lightship of the Haven Ports Yacht Club offers a warm welcome and hearty food and drinks for locals and visitors, and the onsite mini market offers plenty to top up supplies. Suffolk Yacht Harbour managing director Jonathan Dyke comments, “There is so much to explore when sailing around the east coast and we welcome anyone looking to pop into the marina; whether it’s to have a hot shower, replenish supplies, carry out maintenance work or simply have a base from which to discover everything East Anglia has to offer.” In addition to a wide array of recreational facilities, Suffolk Yacht Harbour offers an exceptional level of maintenance services, including a well-equipped chandlery, boat hoists up to 75 tonnes, repairs on modern and classic yachts, including Coppercoat application, resprays and GRP repairs. marine engineering, electronics and brokerage services complete the ‘one stop shop’ approach at Suffolk Yacht Harbour. In the summer of 2015, Suffolk Yacht Harbour launched its newly refurbished workshops, offering repairs and renovation work on classic and contemporary sail yachts and motorboats using the latest in marine technology. The well-lit, state of the art workshop includes specialist flash-proof and eco-friendly LED lighting, heating, extraction and ventilation with full climate control. The impressive new facility features specialist ‘zones’; including a 130ft long, two-part spray and preparation bay and a dedicated area with the specific environment and ideal temperature for maintenance work on classic yachts. A custom joinery and machine shop has also been constructed for the design and build of specialist woodwork and shipwright components to meet customers’ requirements. Managing director Jonathan Dyke comments, “The launch of our new workshop facilities has resulted in increased efficiency and a higher demand for refit and repair work at SYH. As a result, we are able to offer extremely competitive prices and we welcome any enquiries.” The modern new set up enables the team at the

marina to work more efficiently, with throughput increased by 30% compared to the previous workshops. As well as its onsite maintenance facilities, Suffolk Yacht Harbour has proven success and a long association with classic boats. This June marks the 15th annual Classic Regatta, one of the largest events for such boats in the UK, which will be a two day celebration of classic boat racing and social events. All interested parties are welcome and should contact the organisers on the details below. In addition, Suffolk Yacht Harbour has recently confirmed the purchase of Classic Marine, a well-established classic boat chandlery. In operation for the last 25 years, Classic Marine sells specialist classic boat fittings and parts such as fastenings, deck fittings, ropes, lights, tools, materials and custom pieces in bronze, stainless or galvanised mild steel. Previously an ‘online only’ chandlery, Classic Marine will continue to supply customers via the current website, classicmarine.co.uk, as well as operating from a new classic boat chandlery located on-site at Suffolk Yacht Harbour. Richard Gadd, chandlery manager, comments, “In addition to the website, the new retail outlet adjacent to the existing SYH chandlery offers more of a ‘visit and view’ approach. We welcome local and visiting yachtsmen to pop into the new chandlery to see what we have in stock and discuss any bespoke requirements.” Away from the classic scene, the Haven Ports Yacht Club series in the spring and autumn will incorporate IRC racing boats and the exciting new Melges 24 fleet, which is now at 13 boats and growing in popularity. The Melges National Championships, hosted by Haven Ports Yacht Club in July, promises to be an exhilarating weekend of racing. Whether it is family sailing, socialising, competitive racing or maintenance work, Suffolk Yacht Harbour is the hub for the scenic waters of the east coast.

Marigot Bay W

hether you long for a sailing or boating destination, a romantic getaway, an intimate wedding location or just a place to relax and refresh, you need look no further than the beautiful Capella resort and Marina situated in the breath-taking Marigot Bay on the west coast of the Caribbean island of St Lucia. From the moment your car delivers you to the resort entrance, you’re immersed in a world of tranquillity, where everyday life is but a distant memory. A glass of ice-cold Caribbean tea (with an optional shot of local rum – who wouldn’t succumb?) offers instant refreshment to the weary traveller, and there’s no scramble to check in, fill forms or swipe your credit card. Instead, your personal assistant takes you on a slow, leisurely walk through the gardens and to your room, suite, or one of two penthouses, where you’ll find your bags have already been delivered. The Capella resort’s ethos is to ensure that each guest is treated as an individual, and the staff go to extraordinary lengths to tailor your experience, starting a couple of weeks before your stay with a conversation about your expectations of the resort, your preferences, wishes and wants, enabling them to make your stay both stress-free and utterly remarkable. This attention to detail is borne out in the impeccable finish of the rooms, from the divine complimentary toiletries to the fridge – 

ready stocked with your drinks of choice. Just as Capella’s celestial namesake is a double star (every employee wears this double star badge to denote the interaction between guest and hotel) so the Capella brand represents the dual relationship and intimacy between some of the most luxurious hotels in the world and its guests. All the hotel staff address you by name, and the customer service is unparalleled. A feast for the senses The aptly named Library is where you will find the hotel’s reception, but rather than the imposing corporate lobbies of most large hotels, at Capella this is a small unimposing desk set in the corner of a relaxed open-plan room filled with books, board games, DVDs and the obligatory local information. From here, make your way across the light and airy entrance hall and take breakfast at the signature restaurant, The Grill at 14*61*. Restaurant is a slight misnomer – the experience is more akin to taking a casual meal with friends and family. A tempting spread is laid out buffet style, catering for everybody’s tastes, while eggs and hot breakfast dishes are cooked to order and delivered to your table. Impeccable fresh and wholesome ingredients are sourced from local suppliers, and staff are on hand to create special requests and tailor any dish to your whims. In addition to the formal restaurant, there are a variety of dining options within the Capella resort. Fresh sushi, burgers and salads can be enjoyed at the amazing swim-up pool bar, Brut. From the comfort of a seat in the pool, parched swimmers can refresh with an expertly mixed drink from the impressive array. The Rum Cave borders the Dinghy Dock, and overlooks the bay – it’s the perfect setting for its simple, freshly produced fish dishes and light bites. A short way down the boardwalk is the Bayside Café. Choose a table with a view of the sandspit (film buffs will appreciate that this was a location in the original Dr Doolittle film), and enjoy breakfast, or a casual lunch of baguettes, burgers, pizzas, salads and, if you’ve room, gorgeous homemade ice-cream. From the Bayside Café take a stroll around the Marina, which boasts boutiques, a well-stocked supermarket and various gift

palate cleansers to eat between tastes, and Dennis will transport you through this history of rum, its origins, the manufacturing process, and the differences between blends. The local distillery is less than 2km from the hotel, and its rums populate the bars around Capella – Chairman’s Reserve, Forgotten Casks, 1931 and Admiral Rodney. This really is local produce at its best!

Ultimate relaxation There’s no better place to sleep off the after effects of a bit too much rum than around the pool on one of the very comfortable sunloungers or in a secluded cabana. Here you will find that towels have already been placed on the beds, and the ever-attentive staff are on-hand with bottles of water and freshly topped coconuts. From the poolside you have a bird’s-eye view of the Marina, and can watch the yachts arriving and departing, immersed in the tranquillity that surrounds you. Drifting off to the sound of tropical birdlife, you’ll be fully immersed in this tropical paradise… But, in typical Capella style, the experience is elevated yet further by the amazing Auriga spa, with its steam room, sauna, hot water bath, massages and relaxation area.  Choose between a Fiksyon Fwote massage, a Panse

body exfoliation or a Volcanic Energy therapy that incorporates acupuncture. Each treatment lasts around 90 minutes. We enjoyed the Fiksyon Fwote massage, an incredible treatment fusing traditional techniques and the scent of limes and herbs, to induce a feeling of complete and utter peace. At the end of your stay, refreshed, relaxed an rejuvenated, we expect most people leave the Marigot Bay resort with a lingering backward glance. Whether you sail or fly into these idyllic hideaway, you’re certain to want to come back time and time again.

Marigot Bay Marina Secluded from hurricanes, this natural shelter offers first-class marina facilities The impeccably run Marigot Bay Marina is managed by Troy Blanchard, and whether it be a tender or a superyacht, each vessel is treated to the same high level of customer service. As with the hotel guests, the staff here contact guests prior to arrival to ensure that their stay is tailor made. Whether your yacht needs maintaining or repairing, provisioning or servicing; if you or your guests require transfers, flights, reservations or tours, you can be sure it will all be sorted before you berth. The Marina at Marigot Bay is known as nature’s hurricane hole, and offers the best available wind, swell and surge shelter in the region. In addition, Saint Lucia has been impacted by less severe hurricanes than any of the Eastern Caribbean islands since records began in 1851. Hurricanes that have passed through the region over the last 12 years, including Dean and Tomas, have informed the Marina staff that Category 3 and below hurricanes do not pose a threat to yachts berthed on their marina docks and mooring buoys. The pricing policy here divides the year up into two arbitrary halves, approximately coinciding with the superyacht charter season: December to May, and the ‘Hurricane Season’ from June to November. Inclusive services include black water pump-out, and captains, crew and on-board guests have access to the hotel’s open facilities including the lower-level swimming pool. The Marina’s wonderful personal assistants and staff operate a full-service marina with both stern-to and alongside berthing. Each berth is serviced with electricity (three-phase, 410V, 50Hz, 2 x 125/200 amp single phase, 110/220V, 50/60 Hz and 30, 50 or 100 amp) with potable water (50psi) Wi-Fi Internet and CATV. In addition, the marina has in-slip high-speed fuel capabilities, with density @ 15°C and ultra-low sulphur content at 0.05 Wt. %. Staff monitor VHF Channel 16 and 12 simultaneously and their Marina Dock Attendants are always on standby awaiting arriving super yachts to escort them into the marina. The Marina Village offers a complete range of shopping services, including a full provisioning service available by advance order. The stock list is available online at marigourmet.com. Affording convenient access to the Caribbean, Capella Marina at Marigot Bay is a favourite start and drop off point for yacht charters due to the large-scale marina and convenient, direct flights to and from the UK. Troy and his team do a tremendous job making the running of the Marina look so easy – berthing some of the larger boats is not a task for the fainthearted, but the guys here make it look easy.

ith just over six months to go until the Games get under way, London 2012 bronze medallists Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell have been selected to contest for medals in the SKUD 18 class, while the trio of Stephen Thomas, John Robertson and Hannah Stodel take their places in the Sonar, looking to make up for the disappointment of narrowly missing a podium place in 2012. Rickham and Birrell are already two-time Paralympians, having made their debut together in the SKUD 18 class at Beijing 2008 and celebrate their selection to Rio 2016 as five-time World Champions and current Paralympic bronze medallists. Thomas, Stodel and Robertson go into the Games as reigning World Champions after striking gold at the 2015 World

Going For 60 |

Championships. They made their Paralympic debut together at Athens 2004, making Rio 2016 their fourth consecutive Games as a trio. All five athletes are determined to bring all their experience to the water in the race for medals in Rio. The five athletes complete the line-up for the ParalympicsGB sailing team, and take up their places alongside London 2012 gold medallist Helena Lucas, who was the first athlete to be selected to ParalympicsGB for Rio back in April 2015 and competes in the 2.4mR event. London 2012 was the most successful Games for the GB sailors since their sport first made its full debut at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games. In the familiar setting of Weymouth and Portland, where the athletes focussed their training ahead of the Games, GB claimed two Paralympic medals on home water. Hannah Stodel said: “London 2012 was tough, but it’s certainly made me more determined for Rio and I’m so excited to be selected to the team. It’s taken years of hard work for us to get to this point and we’re not

going to stop until the moment we finish racing. The three of us work really well together and I’m confident we can achieve our goals.” There are three medal events at the Games. These are the 2.4mR, SKUD 18 and Sonar classes, featuring one, two and three sailors per boat respectively. With the exception of the SKUD, which must have at least one female on board, crews are non-gender specific. Each event consists of a series of up to 11 races – weather permitting. Sailors accumulate points according to their positions after each race, with one point for first, two for second and so on. At the end of racing, all the points except the worst score from each team are added together. The winner is the sailor or team with the lowest points total at the end of the races (unlike the Olympic Games, where there is a one-off final). Penalties are given for rule infringements, with the offending boats having to perform penalty turns before continuing around the course marked out by buoys. In Sailing at the Paralympic Games, modifications are made to the equipment in order to suit the athlete’s functional ability. Some of the modifications often seen in Paralympic Sailing are adapted seats and adapted tillers for steering. Sailing Team Leader and RYA Olympic and Paralympic Manager Stephen Park OBE said: “We’re delighted to be able to finalise our Paralympic team selections today and to be taking six talented and experienced athletes with us to Rio, all of whom have proven themselves in major competition over a number of years. “There’s no doubt that Rio is an incredibly challenging environment to compete in, and the sailors will be focussing all their energies on learning the intricacies of racing in Guanabara Bay. All of these athletes have been to the Games a number of times before and with the removal of sailing from the Tokyo 2020 programme, this could be the last opportunity for them to perform so we will be working all out with them and doing all we can to ensure they fulfil their medal potential in Rio.”

In Manchester this month (March 2016), Helly Hansen welcomed the four bloggers to Salford Quays – Helly Hansen’s UK showroom – to officially launch ‘On The Horizon’, with a launch party and an afternoon of sailing activities on the water, at the Helly Hansen Watersports Centre. Øyvind Vedvik, Helly Hansen’s Sailing Category Managing Director, flew over from Norway to meet with the bloggers to give them an overview of the brand, its extensive history in the world of sailing and to educate the bloggers about the technical (and style) details of the kit they will be using on a regular basis. Over the coming months, Helly Hansen will be taking the sailing enthusiasts on a journey – working very closely with the brand, as well as some of its incredibly talented ambassadors (including Team Concise – one of the UK’s most successful offshore teams made up of Concise 10, Concise 8 and Concise 2; Britannia – a specialist provider of corporate sailing days; and Keronimo – a UK sailing vessel and team), and giving them personal training plans and advice. The four will also be completing their RYA Level 1 and 2 courses for the UK bloggers, and the ISA equivalent in Ireland. In 2015, Helly Hansen introduced the campaign by hosting a hospitality event with the bloggers at the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week – the UK’s biggest sailing regatta. The four bloggers met for the first time on the Isle of Wight to enjoy the atmosphere and explore the island, before spending the day on a 64ft sailing boat, Crusade. This gave them all the opportunity to get to know each other, have a go at sailing and embrace the Helly Hansen brand and maritime lifestyle. Two of the bloggers, Faya and Stuart, have recently been to Barbados with Helly Hansen’s partner, Team Concise, for a week of intense sailing with the UK team. They were dinghy sailing with the team for the first few days, before going up to the Diam 24s (a One Design, ‘mini MOD 70’). The week was finished with a bang – a trip on Team Concise’s new MOD 70 before a celebration beach party for the Helly Hansen team and its partners, including Team Concise, Port Ferdinand in Barbados and Virgin Atlantic. The UK bloggers will now be working with Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre in London to complete their RYA sailing qualifications, and the Irish bloggers will be working with their local clubs to complete their Irish equivalents through the ISA. With lots of practice, professional support and once in a lifetime experiences, the bloggers will be put through their paces, working towards the end goal: becoming competent sailors, ready to compete in Cowes Week 2016 in August. They will become ‘Team HH’ and will pull all their experiences and skills together to hopefully win their class… No pressure then! Watch this space.

Team kit Helly Hansen will also be kitting out the bloggers from head to toe in the latest technical sailing kit, as well as lifestyle clothing and footwear, ensuring they look and feel the part! Some of their Helly Hansen kit will include: n Salt Power Jacket n HP Point Jacket n HP Point Smock Top n HP QD Shorts n Crew Midlayer Jacket n W HP Insulator Jacket n HH Vertex Stretch 1/2 Zip midlayer n HH Dry Stripe Crew baselayer n Marstrand Polo n Sailpower 3 n Berge Viking n HH Rider + buoyancy aid

e recently stumbled across this range of handcrafted ropework accessories made by a talented British knot tyer and designer known only as The Ropeman, who specialises in the historic knot tying skills of sailors, using the same complex knots that would have been used by the crews of Nelson’s Navy over 200 years ago. The historic skill of knot tying has a fascinating history, and can be traced back to the 16th century – about the time Henry VIII founded the British Navy. Decorative rope knots were used on historic sailing ships, and sailors made decorative rope items such as baskets and bracelets for their sweethearts while they were away at sea. On land, every town would have had a ropemaker and a Rope Walk – a very long straight lane where the materials to make rope were laid out before being twisted into rope, which was so indispensable that men could be flogged for stealing it. There are over 1,700 decorative rope knots, each with its own name, such as the Ropeman’s Turk’s Head doorstop (£42). You can see The Ropeman’s complete range of nautical rope knot accessories and buy online at beautifulropedecor.co.uk. Issue 8 |

here’s not much more a symbol of class and sophistication than a beautiful piece of pearl jewellery. Whether a necklace, bracelet or set of earrings, a family heirloom passed down generations or a generous gift from a loving partner, pearls embody the understated sophistication that no amount of money can buy. This queen of gems has fascinated us for centuries – for many thousands of years, divers have fetched up seawater pearls from the Indian Ocean; the Chinese have searched the South China Sea for them since 206BC; and the Spanish Conquistadors found pearl beds in their explorations of what is now Venezuela – and pearls are showing no sign of waning in popularity. Helen Erhabor, Founder and Creative Director of PLAX Jewellery (plaxjewellery. com), explains why she was drawn to work with the subtle beauty of pearls: “Pearls are the ultimate gem, divinely unique with hues and overtones that create a wonderful symphony of natural colours. They possess an innate ability to reflect the multiple facets and characteristics of a woman, beautifully. It was this sheer beauty of pearls that first attracted me. I am fascinated by their transformative powers – when worn they add an almost tangible aura of beauty, strength and sophistication. Each one is unique and they are an inspirational gem to work with.”

Marina lifestyle Natural or cultured? Natural pearls are incredibly rare, which explains their immense value. These accidents of nature occur when an irritant enters the shell of certain molluscs – there are many shellfish that make pearls, but it is those of the pearl oyster, with their rich lustre and subtle hue, that are most sought after. It can take years for a pearl to be created, and finding it is a matter of luck. They are so rare that single natural pearls are most commonly sold as collector’s items or set as the centrepiece to an item of jewellery. Most pearls used in contemporary jewellery are cultured, grown within either freshwater mussels (predominantly in China) or saltwater pearl oysters in Australia, Indonesia, French Polynesia, the Philippines and Japan. Saltwater pearls are renowned for their prominence, opulence and exceptional brilliance, and are finer and more valuable than freshwater pearls. The saltwater pearl family group includes three main types of pearl: Akoya, the iconic beautiful Japanese pearls with exquisite lustre ranging in size from 2-7.5mm; Tahitian, the ‘black’ pearl famed for its enigmatic colour, size (they can reach 14mm in diameter) and lustre; and South Sea, the Rolls Royce of pearls, the rarest and most valuable of all cultured pearls, which can be up to 20mm across.  As Erhabor explains, cultured pearls are just as beautiful and

fascinating as natural pearls. “Cultured pearls also present an array of colours, styles and shapes which makes working with them even more exciting. In fact, a cultured pearl is only distinguishable from a natural pearl with the use of x-ray to display its internal structure.” Precious harvest Freshwater pearl production takes between two and six years from impregnation to harvest. The mussels are carefully impregnated – each mussel can accommodate more than one irritant, producing numerous pearls of varying sizes and quality, which explains the prevalence and thus lower value of freshwater pearls – and immersed at depths of around three feet. The saltwater process is much more complicated, as pearl expert Erhabor describes: “Specialist divers take the oysters that make South Sea pearls to depths of 80m, where the oysters stay for between two and three years. They have to be frequently cleaned to avoid infection, and can only produce one pearl at a time, creating a maximum of just three pearls in their lifetime. At harvest time, the oysters are retrieved and the pearls carefully extracted. Only about 50% of the mussels and oysters implanted

every year will yield pearls, and fewer still – about 10% – will meet the top grading criteria.” Cream of the crop After harvesting, pearls are cleaned and polished, then graded, sorted and matched. A highly experienced pearl sorter will sift through literally thousands of pearls to find matching pearls for necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Pearls are graded on five criteria: lustre, surface, shape, colour and size, with lustre and size being the most important. Freshwater pearls are categorised from AAA to A (with AAA being the best quality) and, just to confuse matters, saltwater pearls from A to D (with A being the best quality). Talented craftspeople like Erhabor create pieces that highlight and enhance pearls’ natural beauty,

Marina lifestyle but did you know that pearl jewellery has its very own vocabulary? Instead of being described in simple measurements, pearl necklaces are named by how low they hang around your neck. From shortest to longest they range: collar, choker, princess, matinee, opera and rope (which is any length that falls below your sternum. Necklaces can also be classified as uniform or graduated. Contrary to their description, uniform strands actually measure within a range, so that the pearls on a 7mm strand will be within 0.5mm of that size. Graduated strands are more affordable than uniform ones, because most of the pearls are small – they were popularised in the 1950s, when many American GIs brought them home with them from Japan. Whatever piece you choose to show off your pearls, you won’t be disappointed. There’s something about the wonder of nature and the creation of something so beautiful from a plain and simple shellfish that continues to capture the imagination of discerning jewellery buyers the world over. Whether you’re looking for a family heirloom to mark a special occasion, or an eye-catching piece for a particular event, show your class with a pearl.

The oysters that produce pearls are sensitive to environmental changes, such as pollution or a rise in water temperature, which can result in poor quality pearls or a failed harvest. While there are currently no industry standards with regards to welfare and the environment, the pearl industry in recent years has begun to adopt a more sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices. Countries like Australia have strict government quotas in place to ensure sustainability and environmental welfare, and further research conducted by the Centre for Social Responsibility in Australia reported that pearl farming in itself is sustainable as it improves water quality, reduces overfishing and impacts coral reef conservation.

Skincare for sailors hits the shelves this month with the arrival from Canada of Skinfix’s range of hard-working products

he Skinfix original skin healing balm was created over 100 years ago by Thomas Dixon, a compound chemist in Yorkshire, using a formula of natural ingredients that were proven to heal and soothe skin ailments like eczema, skin rashes and irritation. Widely popular among customers, the healing balm recipe, alongside the family, emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in the late 19th century. The recipe was passed from generation to generation as word of its effectiveness spread. Sailors know more than most how frigid temperatures, biting winds and indoor heating can leave skin feeling dry, cracked and can trigger sensitive skin and eczema flare-ups. To keep the skin barrier healthy, increasing skin moisture levels with the right blend of natural humectants and emollient oils is a must. A combination of shea butter, beeswax, coconut oils in Skinfix’s ultra-rich Eczema Balm helps repair the skin barrier while also calming the irritation, reducing redness and itching. Thankfully, after all this time, Skinfix is finally available in Boots stores nationwide, so sufferers of dry, sensitive and eczema-prone skin need suffer no more! Soothing wash, £17.99; Soothing Lotion, £17.99; Eczema Balm, £14.99; Hand Repair Cream, £15.99. skinfixinc.com.

Jeanneau

34.2

Daphi is a very nice example of the Jeanneau 34.2, which was a benchmark for yachts of this size and a big success – especially with families. Her horseshoe saloon table arrangement with sliding stool allows six to eight people to sit in comfort and can also make a double berth. The forward-facing chart table, three double cabins and heads with shower are normally only found on boats much larger. She is a shoal draft version, giving access to shallow harbours and estuaries that would otherwise not be navigable. The boat has a mainsheet track in the cockpit, making her easy to sail short- or single-handed. Her real teak interior and rich draylon cushions 84 |

give a warm cosy feel below decks and the well-equipped galley with gas oven and high-capacity refrigerator make staying on-board a home from home pleasure. Maintained to a very high standard and out of the water serviced annually, the boat has been polished, engine serviced and re-antifoul coated so she is ready for the coming season. Daphi also had a full engine overhaul in 2015 and had the standing rigging replaced. Price: £39,995 Trafford Yachts sales@traffordyachts.co.uk +44 (0)1752 600120 traffordyachts.co.uk

PRINCESS 42

The Princess 42 is the benchmark for other 42ft flybridge cruisers and probably one of the finest flybridge cruisers to come out of the Plymouth factory. Superlative build quality, great sea-keeping and spacious accommodation on board all go to make her very much sought-after on the pre-owned market. This particular example is one of the last Princess 42s off the line. She boasts a high level of inventory including bow and stern thrusters, heating, generator and comprehensive electronics package. The master cabin forward has a central island double berth, wardrobe, and en-suite heads and shower. In the en-suite guest cabin to starboard are twin berths, which can be made into a double. Additionally, a

U-shaped seating area in the saloon can convert to a double berth for occasional use. The saloon is well equipped with 32” LED Slimline TV/ DVD, while the galley has Corian style worktops, and a ceramic hob. Outside the flybridge boasts seating and a table, as well as a sun pad area, making it the ideal spot for relaxing. With one owner from new, this is a great example of this desirable 42ft flybridge cruiser. She is currently moored in Chichester and available for sale through Ancasta Chichester. Beneteau Oceanis 343

Launched in 2005, the Beneteau Oceanis 343 came into production as the replacement for the popular Océanis 331, featuring a new hull and powerful rig and design from the award-winning Berret Racoupeau team. The 343 boasts impressive performance with exceptional comfort and spacious accommodation. Her round bilge design makes for good stable cruising, with less of a tendency to heel dramatically under sail than most other yachts of this size. There are imaginative design touches in the cockpit, including the pivoting steering wheel, which allows easy access to the transom for swimming while anchored. This particular 343 was built in 2007 and commissioned in 2008; she is fitted with a Yanmar 3YM30 inboard 88 |

diesel engine (29hp) on shaft drive with 415 hours. Volamus is presented in excellent condition; she has a huge amount of internal space sleeping six in two cabins. She is very well equipped with a full complement of navigation gear, eberspacher heating, in-mast reefing, cockpit enclosure, sprayhood, flexi-teak cockpit and side decks. The Oceanis 343 is easy and safe to sail and her good looks and fast cruising are unlikely to disappoint. Volamus is available through Clipper Marine lying at Swanwick. Price: £69,950 (inc VAT). Hebe is an excellent example of this highly regarded Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i. The 39i was one of Jeanneau’s best-selling yachts; from the drawing board of Marc Lombard, famous French naval architect, it soon developed a reputation as a capable and fast sailing yacht. Presented in very good condition, she has had just two owners from new and has fine inventory with teak laid cockpit and seats, fixed cockpit table, large spray hood, Raymarine colour chart plotters, auto pilot and a DSC VHF. Below decks this owner’s two-cabin version has a large heads with separate shower, two generous double cabins, cabin heating, stereo and

Built and commissioned in 2013, this is a stunning example of a nearly new Fairline Targa 62GT. At first glance, there’s no doubting that this is a powerful sports cruiser with striking good looks. But the real attraction lies in its large, open cockpit that features a J-shaped seating and dining area sitting ahead of a luxuriously large sunpad. The cockpit is a pure entertainment area. Take a seat or stretch out on the sunpad, while taking full advantage of the fully-equipped bar and barbecue. Discreetly housed underneath the sunpad is an integral garage that provides the perfect home for a Williams 325 Jet RIB. With the retractable hardtop roof and the large side windows that gently drop down within the generously proportioned indoor seating area to create a wonderful alfresco environment.

a large L-shaped galley. Her Yanmar engine has been well serviced and pushes her along at up to 8 knots, while her Seldon mast has an almost new 140% Genoa and a slab reefing mainsail with two auto reefs and a lazy jacks pack away, making sail handling very safe and easy. She also has a comprehensive Raymarine electronic suite including Radar and AIS. Fully serviced and ready for the new season this is a great boat with a great pedigree. The stunning full-width master cabin and beautifully presented en suite reflect more of a boutique hotel room; they are both spacious and inviting. Each guest cabin also converts to a double and wherever you find yourself on the boat, when the going gets hot, you can all enjoy the refreshing benefits of chilled water air conditioning. We have recently inspected and sea-trialled this fine motor yacht on her berth at our Essex Marina HQ and can report that we consider her to be arguably one of the best pre-owned examples of her type. This Moody 66 centre cockpit blue water cruising yacht with shoal keel, blue hull & teak deck is the last Moody 66 built and one of the last Moodys built in UK. She was commissioned at Swanwick Marina, Southampton, in 2006, and then sailed and based in the Mediterranean. With accommodation for nine in four cabins and an occasional berth in the saloon, this is a great cruising yacht. The owner’s stateroom has an en-suite shower room, and generous hanging space to both port and starboard. A primary guest cabin also benefits from en-suite facilities and a double berth. The second guest cabin has twin berths, and a skipper’s cabin with two single berths completes the accommodation. The large U-shaped galley is well equipped and boasts a chilled wine bottle rack,

This Trader 64 Sunliner has been rightly praised as our greatest passagemaker, with an awe-inspiring specification and the sea-going abilities to match. Designed in partnership with leading UK designers Tony Castro and Redman Whiteley Dixon, she is one of the most graceful boats afloat. Her interior is the modern Trader style at its finest, combining the best handcrafted furniture with contemporary features and top-quality detailing. Four cabins, including a palatial master suite aft, provide luxurious accommodations. On top of the incredibly comprehensive standard specification, which includes stabilisers, thrusters, twin generator sets, air conditioning, Simrad navigation suite and a 7,000-litre fuel capacity 90 |

This Moody 66 has a very high specification, which includes Raymarine navigation aids, Cruisair air conditioning, Eberspacher heating, electric stainless davits, passerelle, Vacuflush WC, satellite TV system and much more. A hydraulic bathing platform and teak cockpit table add to this Moody’s appeal as a cruising yacht. Currently moored in Limassol, Cyprus, she is available for sale through Ancasta Swanick. for huge range, Starship has the larger engines option for 20-knot-plus speeds when required. Delivered in 2011, Starship is the youngest Trader 64 Sunliner to come to the market, and she presents in showroom condition. Purchased from new by the current owners, she benefits from a host of upgrades added when the boat was first commissioned. As you would expect from a vessel of this calibre she has been very well maintained by her owners – to the extent of spending each winter under cover. aunched in time for the new season, British footwear brand, Chatham, has unveiled its exclusive Made in Britain collection.
