ou might enjoy nothing more than lounging on deck in the sunshine, pootling around the harbour and maybe taking the occasional day trip, but even the most sedate leisure cruiser can’t help but admire the antics of top British round-the-world sailor Alex Thomson. His daredevil stunts, the latest of which sees him towed 280ft into the air on his kiteboard behind his IMOCA open 60 Hugo Boss, are truly breathtaking. Watch his slick and stylish film now at #skywalk – I guarantee it’ll give you goosebumps! We caught up with Alex and his team recently to find out what motivates him, how he trains, and more about his favourite sailing spots in the UK (page 58). This issue is bursting with boats… Nick Burnham takes Sunseeker’s Predator 57 for a spin (page 16) to find out if its popularity (it’s shaping up to be Sunseeker’s fastest-selling model) is deserved; the Howorths pay a visit to Turkey to put Numarine’s 60 Fly through its paces (page 24); and we’ve got first glimpses of some incredible craft, including Glider’s SS18 ‘M’ – an 18m catamaran that will take your breath away (page 22). If you want to kick back and relax after finishing all those essential maintenance tasks necessary to get your boat shipshape for the sunshine, turn to our lifestyle pages, which start on page 49. From fabulous marinas to practical homewares that will make life onboard that bit more stylish, the latest holiday-friendly fashion to treats for your skin, there’s plenty to keep you entertained this month. Enjoy!

Dehler
Dehler celebrates 30 years since the launch of the iconic 34 with the launch of a modern yacht with fast lines and confident appearance – the new Dehler 34!
S
ome 30 years ago, Dehler’s 34 brought the brand global recognition in the yacht world, with its clever combination of sportiness and cruising. With more than 1,300 yachts built, it was the beginning of a new era for the company. To celebrate this anniversary, Dehler decided it was fitting to give this cult classic a facelift… Designed by Judel/Vrolijk & Co, who are known for fast and agile yachts with modern design, the 34’s sporty sailing characteristics are key to its success. The steep stem in combination with the short overhang creates a long water line and allows great top speed. From the exterior, the new Dehler 34 impresses with sportive and elegant lines that correspond to the modern look of the larger Dehler yachts. Two slim, tapered side windows keep her streamlined and flood light to the interior. The low and wide cockpit enhances the sporty look and offers plenty of space for a pleasant breakfast with the family in port or for the crew during active sailing. Inside she boasts two large cabins and a comfortable head, which is equipped with Dehler’s innovative Uni-Door Concept, in which one door separates three areas, providing maximum privacy on limited space. The salon offers two comfortable sofas, a spacious L-pantry and a navigation table. The starting price for the new Dehler 34 is about £120,000 delivered to the UK and including VAT, from Inspiration Marine inspirationmarine.co.uk.

Haines
26
Haines Marine, the British-built brand of river and offshore cruisers, have just announced the launch of their new four berth starter boat: the Haines 26. The design of the 26 has come about from recognition of the demand for both quality and functionality in the smaller boat market. In a relatively small length this boat offers flexibility and generous space inside and out. This cleverly designed boat offers flexibility to cater for: a family of four sleeping in four dedicated berths; six adults comfortably dining; or a group of eight enjoying a very sociable day out on the water. Further, with an air draft of below 7ft, this new model allows
customers to explore what are often the prettiest parts of waterways that larger boats cannot discover. With undisputable Haines build quality, this boat is sure to appeal to a wide market. Whether you’re after a family-friendly weekender, a day cruiser for riverside moorings, or a boat well equipped with all the luxuries required for longer stays onboard, Haines believe with this new addition to their range they may have just the answer. EXPLORER
58 Pilot House
Following an extensive period of design and development, Explorer Motor Yachts are delighted to introduce the Explorer 58 Pilot House into their range of displacement and semi-displacement trawler yachts from 40 to 62 feet. This brand new model takes the renowned and respected Explorer construction and interior finish and combines it perfectly with a stylish yet classic exterior to produce a totally fresh approach to the world of semidisplacement, trawler yacht design. The superb hull form and exterior design has allowed Explorer to introduce a new feeling of light and space into the saloon and pilot house area along with a raised forward galley and interior flybridge access. Below decks the generous beam and
increased hull volume results in a truly superb, full-width en-suite owners’ cabin and a further two more than generous, guest and VIP cabins served by their own heads and shower compartments. The hull design remains without compromise and delivers fantastic sea-keeping, excellent directional stability and all of those qualities synonymous with the Explorer semi-displacement trawler yacht heritage. With three 58 PHs currently in build, the first boat will be delivered to Northern Europe within the next few months. The long waterline combined with strong V hull provides a comfortable ride in rough conditions and at speeds of up to 40 knots. Axopar
Ones to watch
24
Marking an exciting new entry point into the remarkable and awardwinning Axopar range, the much-anticipated world premiere of the Axopar 24 took place in January at the Düsseldorf boat show. Based upon a modular design concept, with different deck layout and accommodation arrangements that share the same twin-stepped, narrow-entry hull, these very competitively priced, performance-led newcomers show the distinctive cutting-edge style in keeping with their bigger siblings from the Axopar 28ft range. Three new models have been introduced within the 24ft/7m range, namely the AXOPAR 24 OPEN, offering an attractive all round windscreen and optional radar arch, together with the 24 T TOP version,
offering extra shade from the sun, and the 24 HARD TOP, extending versatility in more diverse weather and cruising conditions. All models incorporate a bow section with fixed seating or sunbathing area, and in front of the central helm position there are comfortable twin sofas inside, which can be used for overnight accommodation for two. In the cockpit there’s enough seating for five people, two in front and three behind. With an extensive array of optional extras, this brand new range offers boaters huge diversity. Price from £22,000 (plus VAT and engine). UK enquiries to enquiries@offshorepowerboats.co.uk axopar.fi
Jeanneau
Sun Odyssey 449
Probably the most versatile production yacht in her class, this new model, designed by Philippe Briand, has two keel options, five sail plans and three cabin layouts with up to four double cabins, allowing you to tailor the boat to your own requirements. She has a large cockpit with twin steering stations. The Mainsheet and Genoa sheets are led aft to the primary winches at the helm, allowing single-handed sailing without leaving the wheel. Wide side decks make going forward safer and a new bow sprit with reinforced tack point allows you to fly asymmetric sails well forward of the forestay. Below decks the same attention to detail can be found: lots of rich wood, stainless steel and leather create a quality feel and finish.
Built in state-of-the-art factories in France, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 449 sets the standard for modern boat manufacture. The infusion-built deck is lighter and stronger and the 3G hull liner – unique to Jeanneau – provides direct access to high-load areas of |the hull, as well as making the boats incredibly strong. Robots cut |the windows and drill every hole to ensure exact replication and perfect fit and finish. Prices from £182,000 (inc VAT, premier trim package, electronics pack and commissioning pack). sunseeker
r o t a d e Pr Deck saloon or Open? Nick Burnham finds you can have it all with Sunseeker
F
or smaller hardtop sportcruisers the choice is simple. Lack of space on a forty footer leaves room only for a single open-backed cockpit and a dearth of hardtop length makes a fabric sliding roof (less weather-tight but able to concertina into a small space) a no-brainer. At seventy feet it is just as easy – you have all the space you want for a climate-controlled deck saloon as well as an open air space divided by a ‘patio door’, while the elongated length means that a secure, weatherproof, solid sliding roof is the obvious answer. But what about that tricky fifty to sixty foot segment? At this size it is easy to argue the options – open backed or closed, solid roof or fabric, which is why Fairline (for example) offer two versions of their fifty foot Targa 48 – a fabric-roofed open-backed model and a solid-roofed patio-doored equivalent. Problem solved then. Well, not quite, since you can never completely climate-control the open version nor connect with the elements as effectively in the deck saloon model. Add the law of sod that dictates that your dealer will be screaming for the alternative version to the next one off your production line and whichever he chooses, his next customer will want the other one and it’s clear to see that there is plenty of coin tossing to be done. What’s needed of course, is some way for a
boat in this segment to transform between the two. Impossible? Welcome to Sunseeker’s brand new Predator 57. Launched at the London Boat Show last year to great acclaim, the Predator 57 got off to a flying start with a strong forward order book that saw 13 delivered and in service and another 10 in build just six months later. In fact it’s shaping up to be Sunseeker’s fastest selling boat with a production schedule of over forty a year. It’s easy to see why; it is a good looking boat. High of gunwhale as all modern sportscruisers are (interior volume sells), a sleek superstructure that arcs well back toward the transom helps avoid a bulky side profile. A tapering run of hull windows adds interest and further breaks up the visual height. There’s some neat detailing too, triple stainless fillets below the cleats avoid lines chafing the gelcoat and cupholders alongside the spacious forward sunpad are carbon fibre (although lack of an inboard handrail means getting there isn’t as confidence inspiring as it could be). The aft sunpad tops a dinghy garage big enough to consume a Williams 325 RIB and an electric retracting shade extends out of the trailing edge of the hardtop roof so that you can continue to enjoy this area without getting gently roasted, should you wish. Further forward you’ll find a

Marina Review generous C-shaped dinette opposite the wet bar and a sliding glass door accesses the deck saloon complete with a further large dinette opposite the double helm and a sideboard. The layout is pretty fixed, but head down to the lower level and there are a few options to choose between. The standard (and most popular) set-up is as per our test boat – a VIP double cabin forward with en suite access to the day heads, full beam master cabin back aft and in the centre a twin bunked cabin to starboard just aft of a small dinette and opposite a surprisingly spacious galley. But you can opt to lose the dinette in favour of a third heads, giving all cabins their own private en suite – useful for charter work. Or you can use this area to extend the galley, adding room for a wine cooler and a washing machine perhaps. Cherry woodwork makes a welcome return after a decade in the boat building wilderness, or you can up-spec to walnut in satin or high gloss, with oak in ‘Quarter Sawn’ (yellow) or ‘Taboo’ (white) as further choices. The other big choices are mechanical. Volvo Penta’s twin IPS950 system linked to a pair of IPS2 pods and rated at 725hp each are the predictable choice; joystick control offering the new or nervous a welcome confidence lift, but there are a couple of intriguing alternatives. Arneson surface drives harness a couple of MAN 1,200hp motors for an exceptional (if pricey) projected 45 knots if you want to ensure you’re always first back to the marina. But you can also specify good old shaft drive, a rare and welcome alternative for Luddites like me that like to do things the old fashioned way. Available in D13-800 or D13-900 flavours of Volvo Penta, it’s the latter that are burbling beneath the floor as the tide sweeps us through the beautiful surroundings of Poole Harbour and ushers us past the Sandbanks chain ferry and out to sea on an unseasonably wet and chilly day. Visibility from the helm is good, the slope of the foredeck aiding depth of vision whilst a tilt adjustable steering wheel and seat slide adjustment puts the important controls within easy reach. Classy diamond quilted helm seats are comfortable and supportive, if a little over-endowed with thigh support from the lifting bolster section (something that should be easy to remedy). As the last channel
marker slips by and we enter open water proper I ease the throttles forward and the Predator glides smoothly onto the plane. Rudders and shafts give a gentler transition into turns than pods but the helm is responsive and the high speed turning circle satisfyingly small. In a straight line flooring the throttles winds the speed easily into the mid thirties, topping out at precisely thirty five knots averaged over a two way run, giving genuinely pacey thirty knot cruising potential and a very relaxed twenty six knots at just 2,000rpm. With the numbers crunched and the handling assessed we’re taking the opportunity for a quick run along Dorset’s spectacular white faced Jurassic coastline when the weather does that uniquely British Summer thing of turning into a completely different day. Grey rain clouds evaporate and warm sunshine breaks through, turning the sea from slate to turquoise. It’s as though Sunseeker ordained it, because you couldn’t hope for a better demonstration of the Predator 57’s USP – it’s transformer-like ability to turn from weatherproof deck saloon cruiser to an open sportsboat. With the glass saloon door slid in front of the glass bulkhead between saloon and cockpit, a button push allows this entire section to retract slowly but smoothly into the deck, melding the two areas into one. The extended deck-head overhang creates space for a massive solid sliding roof section and with that open as well we find ourselves welcoming the return of summer, on as open a boat as you’re ever likely to find with a lid on it. Verdict There’s much to commend Sunseeker’s new and massively successful Predator 57, offering as it does a winning blend of spacious accommodation, strong performance and sexy looks. But the stand out feature is without doubt that clever retracting bulkhead and generous solid roof. Combining the weather-tight integrity of a deck saloon with access to the elements normally reserved for open backed soft topped sportscruisers is a killer feature, enabling an easy and effective switch between climate control and climate connection.

amed ‘M’, this breath-taking British designed and built sports yacht is an 18m power catamaran with a total beam of 5.3m and a shallow draught of just 30cm, allowing the SS18 to visit bays and beaches that are out of reach of traditional yachts. It can even be beached. With four 270hp waterjet engines providing the power and finger-touch positioning, the Glider is easy to manoeuvre and will quickly accelerate to a heady 56 knots (103kph) even in choppy seas. The wave-piercing hulls and superstructure of the SS18 have been developed using similar techniques as Formula One and aerospace designers to provide exceptional aero and hydrodynamics for a smooth, comfortable ride at exceptional speed with outstanding fuel economy. This allows the Glider to cover long distances in the ultimate luxury of a hand crafted cockpit. Managing Director of Glider (glideryachts. com), Robert McCall comments, “The Glider development has been seven years in the making, with the first SS18 opening up unprecedented cruising opportunities making a range of destinations within easy reach – a trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi could be done in just over 40 minutes and Monaco to Saint Tropez can be reached in under 50 minutes. Every Glider is a masterpiece created without compromise for our elite clientele. Our passion for individuality and world leading engineering, design and quality is a fine example of British innovation and excellence.”

n the dock at the Pendik Marina, not far from Tuzla near Istanbul, sit two Numarine 60 Flybridges, one with a conventional shaft drive and the other, featuring the IPS system from Volvo. We have been here before, to test drive the then-new big brother of this yacht, the 70 Fly, and know that we’re within easy cruising distance of the delightful Prince’s Islands and in for a good day. Both boats have the same bold styling common to all the Turkish yard’s family line products, with a sportive design that respects the exceptional on-board owner space available. Conceived to have the highest volume in the 60 foot category the lines of this boat have been drawn by designer Can Yalman, who has been responsible for the concept, lines and interiors of many of the company’s range. Umberto Tagliavini handles the naval architecture while Gurit are in charge of structural engineering. It is this last point that makes this boat so very competitive in her class. Numarine’s construction techniques and Gurit’s knowhow ensure light weight and strength are guaranteed by vacuum infusion composite construction. That is important if you seek to achieve a top speed of 35 knots and a 28 knot cruising speed. Lighter weight built boats allow for the use of less powerful engines to keep fuel consumption and maintenance costs down and give her a very competitive price. Lying on the dock in the early winter sunshine there is not much save the hull colour, to differentiate the two.
Joystick controls Toy lovers that we are, we opt first for the IPS version, said by Volvo to be superior to inboard shafts in handling, comfort and performance. The joystick is perhaps the most well-known feature of the IPS making it possible to get on and off the dock in a completely intuitive way. This version has two integrated buttons, one for docking mode, the other labelled high mode, making it even easier to get off the dock, which we do with alacrity. Clearing the breakwater we point the bow of the grey hulled yacht towards the Prince’s Islands and open her up. But as we top out at 30 knots we are overtaken by the white-hulled shaft version. “What is this?” we ask. “Have we to choose between performance and handling?” Well, yes, it would appear so, because try as we did, we couldn’t get the podded driven boat to catch up with her shaft-driven sister, which appeared to have at least five knots on us. Both the hard top and the fly feature a large and comfortable cockpit that like her big sister the Numarine 70HT, is asymmetrical in that the only way to get to the side deck on the starboard side is to go round the bow or 24 |

via the swim platform. Truthfully we are not sure we really like this design feature, but we can fully appreciate the comfort and security it offers. We like the Numarine trademark hideaway cleats used for mooring the stern and adore the way they become fully accessible when needed yet remain hidden away neatly except when you need to turn or un-turn the mooring lines. Because the boat was designed to be propelled using IPS, the space required for machinery is smaller than on conventionally driven yachts. Less engine room equates to more passenger carrying space and here this boat truly wins out, big time. Clearly comfort and bonhomie were the guidelines employed when designing the internal layout. The three guest cabins, well fitted out with plenty of storage space, each have their own bathroom that is very much larger than you would expect in a boat of this size. The huge picture windows at water level in the full-beam owner’s suite fill the cabin full of light, and the view it offers to those lying in bed (165cm wide) that is positioned athwart ships will be breathtaking to wake up to. This is the first of the builder’s range of yachts to be totally illuminated using LED

lighting but, having perfected their choice of colour warmth, the designers assure us that all future yachts coming out of the build facility outside Istanbul will be so fitted. The potential versatility of any yachts ventilation is not often appreciated by those who like only air conditioned interiors but throughout this yacht there is the ability to let fresh air circulate through the boat by flipping open hatches in the windows or by electrically lowering the forward side windows in the main saloon, it is a nice and welcome feature. The decor of the yacht’s interior is clean and refreshing and relies heavily on the use of glass, leather and stainless steel to give it a contemporary feel. We particularly like the tactile feel of the leather coated interior hand and holding rails, a first for this builder. With a galley incorporated into the main saloon and

its pods seemed to produce more shudder when at low revs; the bigger MAN beasties felt somehow smoother and sounded infinitely more powerful. Yes, the pod drive was economical and yes, it was great fun to put on and off the docks, but we confess to feeling somewhat pleased with ourselves when we plonked the shaft-driven boat on the dock just as easily using prop wash effect and not even touching the bow thruster switch. Despite having to wait until the Istanbul boat show before the yacht is first seen publicly, we believe that in whatever version she appears in, the Numarine 60 is going to be a well received addition to the Turkish builder’s repertoire and will be a worthy smaller sister to the already popular 78 and 70 models.
Improved economy Volvo will tell you that boats between 10 and 30 metres fitted with their IPS system offer 30% reduced fuel consumption, 30% less CO2 emissions, 50% lower perceived noise level, 40% longer cruising range, 20% higher top-speed, safe and predictable handling. We had the joy of testing two identically hulled boats at the same time and agree with many of their findings. We might, however, beg to differ when it comes to sound levels and vibration. Somehow, the smaller engine and

T
he winter season’s boat shows have us dreaming of the latest Prestige and Princess models, motor yachts with all mod cons, stylish, sleek and stunning. Today’s motor yachts can be customised to the owner’s specification, interiors configured to suit lifestyles, bespoke finishes chosen, but for complete customisation from electronics to décor, it’s hard to beat choosing to renovate a motor yacht whose glory days may seem to be behind them. That’s precisely what the owner of Beyond, a stunning 82ft (25m) Technema, decided to do, despite being in a position to buy a new motor yacht. When she arrived in the UK, Beyond was in a state of disrepair, with a sun-bleached exterior and a dated dark wood interior, but her owner had a clear vision and today she has been completely transformed into an up-to-date luxurious superyacht.
30 |
That vision was one shared by Hamble Yacht Services Refit & Repair (HYSRR), the team behind Beyond’s transformation. Choosing to renovate rather than buy new meant that Beyond could be a one-off, a unique motor yacht, which is a reflection of her owner’s style. The finish had to be modern, of the highest quality and entirely unique. Hamble Yacht Services Refit & Repair is no stranger to unique projects, having previously worked on projects including the commissioning of a Beneteau Oceanis 48 for a disabled sailing charity. The team was chosen for many reasons. The space available in the yard, a big enough shed to house the vessel for 12 months and the expertise and skill available to fully customise the boat were some of the attractions. Plus the yard’s convenient location in Hamble, just a couple of hours from London, meant that the owner was able to be fully involved in the project, visiting on a regular basis.

The team in charge of the renovation even fitted original 1970’s light fittings to complete the look, and care was taken to meticulously match every shade of colour to ensure a harmonious look throughout. Despite the retro styling, the vessel is fitted out with all of the mod cons you’d expect including a modern galley with stainless steel fittings, a designer fridge, dishwasher and washing machine as well as air conditioning and LED lighting throughout. Most of the window frames and door fittings were able to be refurbished. Custom built Corian toilets and vanity units add an extra touch of luxury. True collaboration The project, which took over a year to complete, was a true collaboration between Hamble Yacht Services Refit & Repair and Beyond’s owner. HYSRR brought to bear all their in-house expertise and also worked with external specialists when needed. The team continuously referred to the owner’s exact specification for Beyond,
with the ultimate aim of creating a luxurious and relaxing space for her owner to entertain friends, spend time with family and escape the rat race. The end result is a testament to the passion, innovation and hard work of the team involved, whose skills and expertise were able to turn one owner’s vision into a reality. And Beyond is truly something to be proud of. Following sea trials in the UK, Beyond will be berthed in the Mediterranean, where this unique Technema will take her place alongside superyachts and powerboats. The benefits of refitting a yacht using a trusted team, who are as committed to the project as you, instead of commissioning a new build are clear; from fitting the best onboard systems and state of the art technology and engineering, to choosing bespoke fabrics and customising fixtures and fittings. Yacht refit gives you the freedom to create a boat that is truly unique to you, fulfilling your wish list, and one that you can enjoy and cherish indefinitely. A yacht that is Beyond your wildest dreams.

hen it is still a bit chilly, wet and grey outside, and you are just beginning to contemplate getting your boat ready for spring, nothing is likely to perk you up more than thinking ahead to the lazy summer of cruising you’ve got planned. But in those idyllic visions you are conjuring, is the peace being shattered by bored children moaning or the stress of needing two pairs of eyes in the back of your head? Cruising is meant to be a relaxing, escapist activity, but cruising with kids can be the antithesis of that if you have not prepared to keep them occupied! Fortunately, there is plenty you can do to ensure your trips not only provide an enjoyable day’s boating for everyone onboard but also hopefully spark a passion for being afloat in the youngsters themselves. Getting involved As Vaughan Marsh, RYA Chief Instructor Sail Cruising, explains: “Many people first fall in love with the water as a child thanks to kind, patient family members or friends taking them out on a boat, making learning fun and letting them help out. “Having capable extra pairs of hands to do jobs on the boat can be a big help to a skipper too, so that skipper being confident and experienced enough to give kids responsibilities is a great way to keep the kids engaged and for the skipper to get some valuable help.” If you know you are going to be cruising with younger crew this
36 |
year, then now is a good time to start thinking about the best ways to get and keep their interest. Could they help you get the boat ready to go afloat this year? Show them charts and get them involved in where you might like to explore. What might you see along the way, like famous landmarks, geographical features and wildlife? Talk to them about weather, how different clouds bring different weather and spotting the wind, including using their face to see where the wind is coming from. Teach them knots – there are plenty! Depending on their level of ability and enthusiasm, consider what jobs they could do on the boat itself. Training courses If you think it would be useful for the youngsters to get a bit more ‘formal’ knowledge, there are a handful of RYA courses you could do now that can help the whole family develop a better understanding of how they be useful on a boat and boat safety, after all you may be cruising with inexperienced adults too. And what child doesn’t like getting a certificate or be made to feel like an important grown up? On the sail side, RYA Start Yachting and RYA Competent Crew both have no lower age limit and require no previous experience or knowledge. RYA Start Yachting provides a two-day introduction to the yacht, ropework, getting underway, rules of the road, man overboard recovery, clothing and equipment, emergency equipment and precautions and meteorology. By the end of the course participants

will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework and being aware of safety on board. At five days long, RYA Competent Crew course provides a much more in-depth, hands-on experience of living onboard a yacht and really getting to know the boat. You are the crew and you sail the boat so participants learn all about rigging and sails, sail handling, helmsmanship, meteorology, manners and customs and rowing a dinghy plus all the other topics covered in RYA Start Yachting. By the end participants should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout and assist in all the day-to-day duties and routines onboard. It is great preparation for charter holidays too. On the motor side, anyone from the age of eight can do the RYA Start Motor Cruising course and it can be done either as a one-day standalone course or at the same time as Mum, Dad and/or brothers and sisters are doing their two-day RYA Day Skipper (minimum age 16) or RYA Helmsman (minimum age 12) courses. Participants steer the boat, deploy or observe deployment of the anchor, prepare and throw mooring lines, attach fenders, read GPS and learn to pick up a mooring amongst many other practical skills. Personal safety, including correctly fitting a lifejacket, and recognising and understanding problems that can occur at sea, including their role in an emergency and how to raise the alarm, are also covered. If you are likely to be cruising with children of different ages and experience, the RYA Helmsman course gives slightly older kids, who may have already got a bit of nous on the boat, the chance to develop their knowledge and take on more responsibilities. Vaughan continues: “Everyone has a valuable role to play in basic tasks and personal safety on a boat and every family member, regardless of age, can do their bit to feel fully involved in a day on the water. “Of course every child is different; one might want to do everything while another might be a bit more nervous. But there is still lots more that even the most hesitant children can be gently coaxed into, such as filling in the logbook and looking out for landmarks to helping make cups of tea, to make sure they have a great time too.”

Safety first So the kids are now fully up to speed with, and hopefully excited about, how they can contribute to an enjoyable cruise. But to temper some of the inevitable stress that comes from knowing how easily kids can get distracted or often have no fear, when it comes to safety you need to lead by example at all times. The only way you are going to convince a child they need to wear a lifejacket is by having one on yourself, and the child should be clipped on too. When they are moving around the boat get them used to thinking ‘One hand for you, one for the boat’. Little people can also find it more difficult to get on and off the boat too, so make sure there is a willing adult around to give them a hand or use a fender step. As Vaughan concludes: “Cruising is meant to be relaxed. You are in no hurry so keep things calm, take everything slowly, be measured and keep smiling!”

Children’s lifejackets T
It’s vital that all your crew wear lifejackets when on the water, but this is even more important for small skippers, who need the protection more than most explains Nigel Parkes, Design Manager at Crewsaver
he main purpose of a lifejacket is to protect the wearer by rotating them into a face-up position when they’re in the water. Even the most competent swimmers should wear one – you can’t anticipate a situation where you might fall overboard, and you may not be capable of righting yourself or reaching safety. Whether you’re selecting a jacket for yourself, your family or crew, you should consider worst-case scenarios and the type of lifejacket everyone should be wearing for their ultimate safety. First and foremost to consider is buoyancy, which is measured in Newtons. The more remote your location, the more inclement the weather, and the more layers of clothing you’ll be wearing should all lead you to choose a lifejacket with a higher level of buoyancy.
38 |
Crewsaver are one of the only brands to offer a children’s lifejacket in the 150N offshore category, rather than the more frequently found 100N rated lifejackets. The increase in buoyancy results in quicker spin times, greater mouth freeboard (the distance between the wearer’s airway and the waterline) and increased collar stability. The right choice Children’s lifejackets are, of course, much smaller than adults’, and are either made from foam or are inflatable. Crewsaver also offer a combined foam and air lifejacket within its children’s range, which is an inherently buoyant lifejacket with an inflation bladder that can be orally inflated when the extra lift is needed, taking the affective

Another feature to consider when choosing a jacket is whether you require a harness point, which can be found on the Crewfit 150N Junior and the Supersafe 150N range. Harness points facilitate the use of safety lines which are recommended when sailing in rough weather or during overnight passages. It is important not to use safety lines on powercraft due to the risk of being dragged behind the boat at speed. Correct fit Lifejackets are not something that you can buy to grow into. A lifejacket should be comfortably tight and should not rise up any more than 2.5cm off the shoulders. Make sure the crotch straps are always used and adjusted to the ‘comfortably tight’ position. Too large a lifejacket can result in it riding up and risks not being able to adequately clear the child’s airway from the waterline. Take note of the chest measurements and weight parameters for each item set by the manufacturer. Each lifejacket comes with a handy size guide and if your child is too small for the junior gas lifejacket, there is a fantastic choice of inherently buoyant foam lifejackets to choose from (starting from size ‘baby’). All complete with whistles, reflective tape and crotch straps. Routine maintenance Look after your safety equipment – it’s recommended that all gas lifejackets are serviced annually, and you can find more details on
the Crewsaver website (crewsaver.com). Visually check lifejackets before use, paying particular attention to the firing mechanism on gas lifejackets. Crewsaver’s Crewfit 150N Junior lifejacket has a handy indicator window that shows the status of both the cylinder and capsule. Safe at Sea To help parents encourage their children to wear lifejackets, Crewsaver has created a children’s storybook, Safe at Sea. It follows the adventures of Oliver, a young sailboat, who looks up to Rory the speedboat, but Rory decides not to wear a lifejacket and gets into trouble. The book is free with every lifejacket, some of which are also branded with images of Oliver and Rory.

Partof History National Historic Ships UK launches its Veterans Appeal for maritime WW1 descendants

id your grandparents or great grandparents live, work, serve on or own a vessel during the First World War? If so, National Historic Ships UK would like to hear from you. As part of its WW1: Britain’s Surviving Vessels centenary project, National Historic Ships UK (NHS-UK) has just launched its Veterans Appeal, with the aim of finding descendants of First World War sailors and maritime workers. Once found, NHSUK plans to introduce descendants to vessel owners and arrange for them to visit the ship on which their ancestors served. “People tend to forget that the First World War was a sea war as well as one of horrific land campaigns,” explains Martyn Heighton, Director of National Historic Ships UK. “With this project we are keen to highlight the role of the smaller vessels and we hope that the Veterans Appeal will encourage members of the public to get in touch and tell their forgotten stories, so we can link descendants to the surviving craft on which they served.” The WW1: Britain’s Surviving Vessels project and tells the forgotten stories of more than 60 ships and boats of all types, shapes and sizes, ranging from humble barges to fishing boats and impressive fighting ships, all of which played a vital role during the First World War. These vessels include SS Nomadic, a passenger tender for the Titanic that was pressed into service as an American troopship; HMS Caroline, the last surviving British warship that took part in the Battle of Jutland; the Stour barge John Constable that was scuttled for fear she would be used to transport German troops in the event of an invasion and the topsail schooner Result which was converted into a so-called ‘Q’ ship with concealed armament to lure U-boats into battle. The WW1: Britain’s Surviving Vessels project has its own dedicated website ww1britainssurvivingvessels.org.uk which tells the detailed stories of these vessels, along with images, documents and links to more information. It also describes where to find the accompanying pop-up exhibition, which is visiting sites around the UK during the centenary and can be booked for events or to accompany programmed displays.

Crew Midlayer Jacket When the weather calls for added protection, the Global best-selling crew jacket From Helly Hansen keeps you warm, dry and comfortable

hen it comes to jackets I’m very particular, and have traditionally stuck with a select few high-end brands aimed at the serious mountaineering sector of the market, so when Helly asked me if I’d udertake a long-term test of their top-selling Crew Midlayer Jacket I was a little sceptical. So many technical jackets state they offer water- and windproof, breathable performance, and yet very few really deliver on the claims. Out of the packaging it’s clear this is a serious contender. Helly are well-known in the outdoor world, where they have a long and very successful history, and I’m please to say that technical understanding has been successfully integrated into this well thought out garment. The construction is considered, with a form-fitting cut that doesn’t restrict movement. All the required features are present, with a warm fleece lining, ample pockets just where you’d want them, robust zippers, adjustable cuffs to keep the draughts out, and a one-hand adjustable hem. On the reverse, the jacket shows its purpose clearly, and lives up to its namesake, with a transparent plastic window pocket just under the collar for your crew number. When it comes to performance, the Crew Midlayer doesn’t disappoint either – the two-ply fabric has its seams fully sealed and located away from potential pressure points which could cause water to seep through. The fabric surface is treated with a hard-wearing DWR (Durable Water Repellancy) coating which, after four months of almost exclusive use in all conditions, is showing no signs of losing its effectiveness. The jacket is very quick to dry following a soaking and it’s certainly had a few of those – I’ve worn it in conditions that would test the limits of many full waterproof jackets and at no point has it let in a drop (other than around the neck, where the lack of a hood ultimately limits its use in truly dreadful weather). The breathability is extremely effective too – not quite up to the standards of Goretex or eVents top-of-the-line fabrics, but certainly sufficient for physical activity on board a boat. Through the long winter months this jacket has proven to be a usefully warm garment that keeps out the chill very successfully – it’s easy to see why the Crew Midlayer has become such a great seller for Helly, it’s certainly become my jacket of choice for everyday use. Both men’s and women’s versions are available, £105 from hellyhansen.com.

Power Games: A Political History of the Olympics
£11.99 (PB), verso.co.uk
As Jules Boykoff makes clear in this storyfilled and devastating history, the Games have had a thoroughly chequered political history. Boykoff, a former member of the US Olympic soccer team, takes readers from the nineteenth-century origins of the modern Games, through its flirtations with Fascism, and into the contemporary era of corrupt, corporate control. With the world poised for the Olympic Games this summer in Rio, Boykoff offers a timely reminder of the devastation left behind after the cameras have been turned off. 42 |

Not many cars can claim iconic status – Marina takes a closer look at the latest Cherokee to emerge from the Jeep stable and asks if it lives up to its historic namesake
M
any of today’s 4x4 SUVs trade on their off-road credentials, but the truth is most are clearly focussed on tarmac rather than the rough stuff. Most buyers in the market for a true off-roader think first of the Land Rover brand, and with good reason. The British marque has been building rugged 4x4s for longer than nearly anyone else… Except Jeep, that is. With origins dating back to the 1940s, Jeep is a brand steeped in history, with a proven track-record for delivering the kind of off-road abilities most of the competition can only dream of and a strong family identity. The iconic Cherokee name first graced a bootlid in the 1970s, although the model evolved out of the longer-running Wagoneer, itself considered by many to be the first of the luxury SUVs. The Cherokee has long-traded on its rough, tough image, but sadly earlier models never really caught on in the UK market, where the soft and woolly ride and vague steering was at odds with our twisty A- and B-roads. Absent from our shores since 2011, the Cherokee name is now back and, under the ownership of parent company Fiat, things are looking distinctly better. With the SUV market so hotly contended nowadays, Jeep has elected to take a leaf out of Land Rover’s book and has repositioned the latest Cherokee against more up-market offerings from rival manufacturers. A closer look Viewed alongside the likes of Audi’s Q5 and the new Discovery Sport, the distinctive looks of the Cherokee will certainly polarise opinions. There’s no mistaking the iconic Jeep grille, and the masculine looks continue with squared arches and tough plastic coverings to the lower door panels, arches and bumpers, and while it may not be to everyone’s taste, it does stand out.

Move inside and things get better – sumptuous leather covers most of the interior surfaces of our Limited spec test vehicle, with the fit and finish equalling much of the competition, if not quite rivalling the best of the German offerings. Where the Jeep certainly does win out is with standard levels of equipment. Even the entry-level Longitude model comes with the touch-screen Uconnect Media Centre featuring DAB radio and integrated voice control, parking sensors, climate control, cruise control and a myriad of safety and driver aids that all helped the latest Cherokee achieve an Euro NCAP 5-Star rating. Move further up the range and you gain sat nav and leather trim, with the range-topping Limited spec wanting for nothing. Of course, the highlight of the standard specification is undoubtedly the properly set-up 4x4 system that affords the Cherokee genuine off-road credentials, and all models feature the renowned Selec-Terrain traction control system designed to optimise the four-wheel-drive systems for the conditions That same system ensures road manners are composed and, given its size and weight, this latest model Cherokee feels very European and well-suited to our roads. Body roll can be an issue at higher speeds, and although it can’t match the best in class for outright handling prowess, it’s far from the worst offender. The chassis does a good job of isolating the occupants from the bumps in the road, although it can get a little choppy over broken surfaces, particularly at slower speeds. Higher speed ride quality is very good and the supportive seats make the new Cherokee ideally suited to longer journeys. Living with the Cherokee The old model Cherokee was starting to feel its age towards the end, with outdated engines struggling against the modern high-efficiency turbo diesels from the likes of Audi, BMW and Volvo. Fortunately Jeep have listened and the latest model comes two diesel options – the entry-spec 2.0-litre Multijet producing 140bhp and the considerably better 2.2-litre offering 182 or 197bhp depending on trim-level. The Limited-spec test car came with the 197bhp option and it’s an excellent power unit, producing ample power and torque for a midsize SUV. It’s also one of the cleanest engines Jeep have ever fitted,

Marina Wheels emitting 150g/km of CO2 and achieving an impressive 49.6mpg. The 2.2-litre engine also benefits from a superb nine-speed automatic gearbox which shifts so smoothly at times you find yourself checking to see if it’s changed at all – although occasionally it can be a little too eager to kick down and it lacks the paddle-shift option enjoyed by its rivals and even its bigger brother the Grand Cherokee. Sitting high, general visibility is very good, although, as with all SUVs, rear visibility when parking is atrocious – many buyers will want the rearfacing camera fitted to the Limited-spec model. The steering is light and precise, making slow-speed manoeuvres effortless, but weights up nicely at higher speeds – a pleasant change to the numb, isolated feel that plagues so many of the latest SUVs Storage might not match the cavernous Discovery Sport, but with
Marina’s Opinion As with the Grand Cherokee last year, I found myself surprisingly impressed with the latest Cherokee – Jeep have received a lot of stick in the past, but it’s great to see things improving so much under the guidance of parent company Fiat. The latest offerings from Jeep offer fantastic value-for-money and the opportunity to buy into an iconic brand with true pedigree and style. The latest Cherokee is a huge step on from the previous model and a deserving rival to the established European competition.
Well-built and extremely well-equipped, with a rugged quality that should shrug-off years of use – the latest Cherokee’s interior is a huge leap up from previous models and marks a change of direction for the Jeep brand
Ample, if not quite class-leading, storage and a completely flat load area gives the Cherokee an added advantage over some of its less versatile rivals

MDL’s
Sparkes & Northney Marinas Great locations and a thriving social scene makes these Hayling Island marinas well worth a visit
M
DL Marinas offers two beautiful marinas on Hayling Island: Sparkes Marina on the southeast tip, and Northney Marina on the north shore within Chichester Harbour. Benefiting from easy access to the Solent, Northney Marina is close to the harbour entrance, while Sparkes Marina is positioned on the entrance itself. Unlike many marinas in the area, both enjoy full tidal access affording berth holders the luxury of sailing at any time they choose, without the worry of cutting their day short. Both marinas boast picturesque locations, first-class berthing facilities and everything you need on-site to enjoy and look after your boat. Northney and Sparkes both pride themselves on their warm and welcoming social scenes with the friendly MDL teams offering an abundance of activities and events for berth holders to enjoy all year round, ensuring everyone feels at home. A perfect location for a summer’s day or a cold winter walk, Hayling Island offers beautiful cycle and walking routes, an array of quaint eateries and dining options, along with plenty of things to do with all of the family. Sparkes Marina Set within one of Europe’s largest natural harbours, Sparkes Marina offers a tranquil location to berth your boat. It’s the perfect place to sit back and relax with your morning coffee or an evening glass of wine while taking in the stunning sunsets, calm waters and the many species of birds and marine life in and around the marina. The facilities at this 140-berth marina includes 24-hour showers and toilets, laundry facilities, petrol and diesel, marine gas, yacht brokerage and Hayling Sea School, which offers tuition in power and sail vessels. There is also storage ashore for over 200 boats and a 40-ton mobile crane for lifting out and boat movement. In addition to its berthing and marina services, Sparkes Marina has many skilled professionals on site. These include a number of specialist companies across engineering, outboard engines, rigging and boat management, offering a one-stop shop for your every boating need. Northney Marina Offering another fantastic location, Northney Marina is situated close to the M27 allowing easy access to the excellent facilities which include 228 berths, a relaxing customer lounge with sunny outside terrace, as well as a shop selling essential provisions. The modern facilities building includes plentiful showers and toilets, disabled facilities and a launderette, along with an office and reception. Diesel is also available on-site, enabling boat owners to make the most of their cruising rather than making special journeys for fuel.

Facilities and services at Sparkes Marina
In addition to its first-class berthing and marina services, Northney Marina offers excellent facilities for boat owners wanting to carry out boat repairs or maintenance work. There is storage ashore for over 200 boats as well as a 35-ton boat hoist and facilities for mast stepping. There is a modernised slipway with an access pontoon which is ideal for trailer sailors, as well ample car parking and trailer storage space. Among the extensive facilities available on-site are a number of yacht brokers and marine related trades. Cruising adventures There are plenty of anchorages to explore within the immediate area around the marinas, such as Itchenor with its quaint pubs, or the pretty Bosham Village, which is set between two tidal creeks at the eastern end of Chichester Harbour. Further afield, you can sail west to historic Portsmouth or explore the coastline around the Isle of Wight. As part of MDL Marinas’ comprehensive berthing package, annual berth holders receive Freedom Berthing membership and complimentary access to over 100 marinas across the UK and Europe. This opens up a world of cruising opportunities for anyone berthing at Sparkes or Northney, with the Hamble and Solent marinas all in easy reach. It’s also the perfect starting location for a leisurely cruise to the West Country or for a break in Torquay or Plymouth. With access to a huge network of marinas across Europe there’s no stopping berth holders visiting France, Spain and Italy – the opportunities really are endless. Things to see and do in Hayling Island There’s plenty to keep you entertained in Hayling Island, not least the Hayling Billy Trail which offers a fantastic walk and cycle route where you can see some really interesting views of oyster beds and birds, as well as view some of the old World War II defences. The area benefits from four miles of unspoilt award-winning beaches, perfect for a day at the beach or a spring stroll with lots of little places to stop for coffee and lunch. Those looking for a bit of adventure, or a great place to tire out the kids, should head to Funland at the southern tip of Hayling Island. You are promised a great afternoon with lots of rides and arcades for everyone to enjoy. Visitors can also take advantage of the Hayling Seaside Railway, or enjoy a cosy afternoon watching a film or catching the latest show at the Station Theatre, which hosts some brilliant productions. There are some fantastic restaurants to try including the on-site Piranha Bar & Restaurant which offers extremely good seafood and has an excellent reputation. In addition, there is a lovely seaside bar and restaurant, The Olive Tree, which offers an excellent menu and live music. Or for those looking for something spicier, the Bay of Bengal Indian restaurant is renowned for its superb dishes.

he rich, colourful, romantic Catalan capital of Barcelona, where luxury shopping and world-class sporting events beckon, is on a different orbit from resorts of the Côte d’Azur or Costa del Sol. And unlike other popular ports, Barcelona remains lively throughout the year. A strong sense of identity is part of the appeal of this city which has an attitude that’s way more than the sum of its parts. So too does OneOcean Port Vell – located at the nexus of the picturesque Gothic Quarter and the sassy Barceloneta neighbourhood. Since opening just over a year ago, Europe’s newest superyacht hub – with 150 berths ranging from 5 to 190 metres – has been under the direction of Captain Paul Cook. “I’ve been all over the world as a Royal Navy and superyacht captain and I do not know of another marina that is so brilliantly located.” The General Manager continues, “We are ideally positioned for the Balearics and the Costa Brava, as well as for vessels en route to and from the Caribbean and Mediterranean. With the international airport only 30 minutes away and nearby heliport, Barcelona is a ‘fly in and fly out’ destination.” Rivalling the Catalan capital’s other temples to gastronomy; the members-only Michelin-starred OneOcean Club Restaurant is a paragon. Sublime Catalan brunches and dinners overflow with epicurean élan; while the chilled vibe at the waterside BlueWave tapas bar is perfect for drinks and snacks. OneOcean Club membership allows yacht owners and guests to enjoy first-class complimentary facilities including a range of bespoke 24-hour concierge services. Members enjoy privileged access to The Gallery, a stunning two-storey glass pavilion, with its dedicated business centre as well as OneOcean Wellness Centre and Gym with an array of spa treatments. Crews are especially well catered for with their own lounge and cinema. All berths at OneOcean Port Vell are generously apportioned to permit tenders and toys to be launched stern-to or alongside. Facilities include power, potable water, grey and black water discharge, fibre-optic internet connection, fuel bunker service, storage and car parking adjacent to the berth. It is also one of the few marinas in the world offering full International Ship and Port Facility Security Code compliance. On the doorstep is the Marina Barcelona 92 (MB92) shipyard with the facilities and expertise to repair and refurbish yachts. OneOcean Port Vell also holds a permit to extend the TPA tax-free benefit to berthed yachts, making it one of the only European marinas where VAT exemption can be granted during maintenance periods. Captain Jamie Whitehead of 50-metre M/Y Septimus says, “Berthing the yacht at OneOcean Port Vell is akin to having a big house in what is without doubt the best city on the Mediterranean

coast. Apart from the outstanding features, it’s the little details that you notice straight away, like when you come in to berth and hand your power cable over there’s someone there to plug it in for you.” OneOcean Port Vell has announced that it will offer all new-build yachts (25m to 190m) a complimentary seven night (consecutive) stay at the marina throughout 2016. Commenting on this offer, Paul Cook says: “As someone who has experienced a yacht build both as a Captain and Managing Director of integration companies I am only too aware how important the first marina is in helping a superyacht make the vital step from construction to operation.” Another offer is a complimentary berth on their first night for all yachts over 25m. These offers run from 1 June to 30 September 2016.

L
ying in its own dyke off Womack Water in Ludham, Norfolk, is Hunter’s Yard, home to a fleet of traditional 1930s sailing craft affectionately known as ‘Percy’s Ladies’. On the site in 1932, Percy Hunter, with his sons Cyril and Stanley, built their first shed in the traditional Broads style and, by that summer, they had designed, built and launched the first two-cabin yachts of the Hunter’s Yard fleet. The fleet grew year on year, and a second shed was built in 1935 to house some of the now 14 yachts during the winter. Today, the two boat sheds are largely as they were originally built, and a visit to Hunter’s Yard is something of a step back in time to a calmer age, where sail power ruled, quality craftsmanship was a given and life moved at a somewhat slower pace. Thanks to the hard work of the Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust and a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Hunter’s Yard continues to uphold the skills and traditions of those original boat builders. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a novice, you can either learn to sail or enjoy a relaxing pootle around the Broads on one of these incredible craft. Why not refresh your sailing skills in Brown Bess, a traditional wooden balanced lug? Or take a party of friends or family on one of the magnificent gaff sloops in the Lullaby Class – Lustre, Lullaby and

Thomson’s IMOCA 60 race boat – is race ready. Daniel is overall project manager for all yachts and their crews. Having joined Alex Thomson Racing in 2003, he has worked closely with Thomson ever since to prepare the Open 60 yacht for single-handed round the world challenges. A talented sailor in his own right, he competed in the 2009 Transat Jacques Vabre with Thomson as his co-skipper. Daniel has overall responsibility of the technical team and ensures all standards are met and the boat is always ready for action. Will Jackson joined Alex Thomson Racing in 2008 as Rigging Manager. As part of his role, Jackson helps to prepare the boat and get her ready for any upcoming challenge, services and inspects the rig and rigging components, performs routine maintenance, keeps strict control of weight studies for components, and manages all aspects of sail maintenance and configuration. Over the years, Thomson and his team have become renowned for their daredevil stunts. The first, Thomson’s keelwalk, came about when he was competing in the Round the Island Race, and the stunt was such a huge success with his sponsors that he decided to build on it. The idea for the mastwalk came to Thomson when he was racing in the 2012-13 Vendée Globe – his boat broached and the mast
was lying flat. The two stunts – #keelwalk and #mastwalk – have now been watched online by more than 4.5 million people around the world. A third stunt, #skywalk, was unveiled in March 2016. Thomson has been sponsored by Hugo Boss since 2003, making their relationship one of the longest and most coveted in sailing and sports sponsorship history. The new Hugo Boss yacht – launched in 2015 – was two years in the making and was designed and built with one key, overarching objective: to be sailed around the world by Thomson in the 2016-17 Vendée Globe. The yacht is 5% lighter than Thomson’s previous boat, an improvement which the team firmly believes will help him to sail quicker than ever before, and was designed in partnership with world-renowned industrial designer, Konstantin Grcic. Grcic designed a large section of the boat’s interior, including the navigation and sleeping areas, as well as the aesthetic finish of the yacht. Perhaps the most exciting design feature of Hugo Boss is that the yacht is, for the first time, black. Traditionally, racing yachts are white, because the colour reflects heat. Black, meanwhile, absorbs heat which, in usual circumstances, would make living conditions onboard unbearable for Thomson, and could lead to parts of the boat’s structure melting. However, the team worked in partnership with chemical engineering company BASF to develop a black paint that both reflects heat and is suitable for a marine environment. The end result is a totally unique, visually stunning yacht.

O
ne of the most exciting and talented yachtsmen of his generation, Alex Thomson is the youngest skipper to win a round the world yacht race (1999’s Clipper Race, age 25), and has already broken three sailing world records: n 2003: Monohull singlehanded 24-hour distance record (468.72nm) n 2007: Monohull (up to 60 feet) 24-hour distance record with Andrew Cape: (501.3nm) n 2012: Monohull (up to 60 feet) singlehanded transatlantic sailing record (8 days, 21 hours, 8 minutes and 31 seconds) He cemented his reputation as one of the greatest in the sport when he finished the 2012/2013 Vendée Globe in third place, breaking the British record along the way. But even a solo sailor needs a dedicated team, and Thomson is no different. Founded in 2003, and completing their first race, Transat Jacque Vabre, that year, the team at Alex Thomson Racing has been pivotal to his success. He’s backed up by a permanent staff of 12 people, with a combination of shore crew and technical crew working full-time on the IMOCA 60 Hugo Boss. Each is an expert in their own field, boasting skills in rigging, electronics, composites, naval architecture, project management, sponsorship, logistics and digital media. The team and boat are based at Haslar Marina in Gosport but are often located worldwide when the boat is in a foreign port. Marina: Tell us more about your sailing history and racing background… Alex Thomson: I started sailing as a young child. My dad was a search and rescue pilot in Gosport, so we lived close to the water and I always loved to be out on the boat. Since then I’ve never been far from the sea. In 1999, when I was 25, I won the Clipper Round the World Race, becoming the youngest round the world race winner – a record I still hold. The win inspired me to join the solo racing scene. I made my mark by breaking the single-handed world 24-hour monohull distance record in 2003, and I broke my own record again in 2007. In 2004 I set my sights on the ultimate in offshore solo racing, the Vendée Globe. Unfortunately, my two solo round the world attempts were met with frustration when structural failure forced me to retire early from the Vendée Globe 2004 and the Velux Five Oceans Race in 2006. I went onto a second place podium finish in the double handed 2008 Barcelona World Race, before, once again, focusing on the Vendée Globe – a race which is, without doubt, one of the toughest and most dangerous sporting challenges in the world. However, three weeks before the Vendée Globe was due to begin, in November 2008, my boat was struck by a French fishing vessel – 2008 just wasn’t to be my year! Marina: Which of your many achievements are you most proud? Alex Thomson: In the 2012-2013 Vendée Globe I successfully completed the race, finishing in third place. My race time of 80 days, 19 hours and 23 minutes set a new British record, so that was a particularly special achievement for myself and the whole team. Ever since then, as a team, we have been focused on the 201617 Vendée Globe, where we aim to take home the victory.
Marina: Have you experienced any catastrophic moments at sea? Alex Thomson: During the Velux Five Oceans in 2006 the keel on Hugo Boss broke when I was more than 1,000 miles from land in the Southern Ocean. A temporary repair was not enough to provide a solution and I was forced to abandon the race, because it was just not safe to continue. But when you’re in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by nothing but water, it’s not just a case of giving up and going home! The nearest competitor in the water was my British opponent, Mike Golding, who was about 70-80 miles away. He was informed by race control of what had happened to me and he turned around and came to my rescue, which meant battling some serious headwinds. Even when Mike was able to reach me, the rescue was far from easy. We spent one night within close proximity to one another, aware that the conditions made a rescue attempt that evening too dangerous. The following morning I left Hugo Boss and launched myself into a life raft with my Crewsaver survival suit on. The water was freezing and, without my survival suit, I knew that if I was exposed to it I’d have a matter of minutes before my body would start to shut down. We also battled with engine problems and 15 foot swells, which made everything so much harder. After four hours we finally managed to manoeuvre ourselves to allow for me to be pulled into Ecover by Mike. That was probably the lowest point of my career to date. I had lost Hugo Boss, the boat that had been so important to me for the past three years, been forced to abandon the race and caused another competitor to ruin his chances as well. But I was alive. And that was all that mattered at that moment in time. It was a pretty terrifying experience. Marina: Is there one item that you would never travel without? Alex Thomson: My Hugo Boss Regatta watch. When I’m alone at sea, I always need to be aware what the time is, and I need a watch that is wholly reliable, even when wet.

Marina: How do you make being a professional sailor your business? Alex Thomson: I am fortunate enough to have a fantastic sponsor in Hugo Boss. Our relationship is a solid one, and one which has been in place for many years now. Together, Hugo Boss and Alex Thomson Racing have created a powerful brand. In terms of the team set up, there are many components in place to make sure the business runs smoothly! There are, of course, commitments that come with a career as a professional sportsman. I spend a lot of time travelling in between races to meet with partners, sponsors and media. But this comes with the territory and, ultimately, all of this activity allows me to continue to do what I love.
60 |
Marina: What are your favourite places to sail, in the UK and beyond? Alex Thomson: I lived in the Shetlands Islands for four years between the ages of 11 and 15, and it’s still one of my favourite places in the world. It’s always a nice moment when I spot the north shore during the Round Britain and Ireland Race. It’s a unique place: so stark and raw in its beauty. Particularly in the endless days of June. It honestly feels like you’re at the edge of the world.

It’s the perfect accent to your nautical theme, whether that’s at home or on board. “There’s something magical about being by the sea,” says Sophie. “I’ve spent many happy holidays on the north Norfolk coast, which was the inspiration for this collection. Jeanneau
34.2
Daphi is a very nice example of the Jeanneau 34.2, which was a benchmark for yachts of this size and a big success – especially with families. Her horseshoe saloon table arrangement with sliding stool allows six to eight people to sit in comfort and can also make a double berth. The forward-facing chart table, three double cabins and heads with shower are normally only found on boats much larger. She is a shoal draft version, giving access to shallow harbours and estuaries that would otherwise not be navigable. The boat has a mainsheet track in the cockpit, making her easy to sail short- or single-handed. Her real teak interior and rich draylon cushions 84 |
give a warm cosy feel below decks and the well-equipped galley with gas oven and high-capacity refrigerator make staying on-board a home from home pleasure. Maintained to a very high standard and out of the water serviced annually, the boat has been polished, engine serviced and re-antifoul coated so she is ready for the coming season. Daphi also had a full engine overhaul in 2015 and had the standing rigging replaced. Price: £39,995 Trafford Yachts sales@traffordyachts.co.uk +44 (0)1752 600120 traffordyachts.co.uk

WIN!
WORTH up to
£630!
A hand-cut nautical relief model
One lucky reader will win a unique piece of hand-crafted artwork from Landfall Artwork, worth up to £630…
U
sing original nautical charts, Peter Bolt of Landfall Artwork creates intricate topographical relief models of scenic coastline from around the globe. Capturing each headland, bay and harbour in perfect detail, every chart is bespoke and meticulously crafted by hand in two stages. Stage 1 involves cutting out each layer of the chart by following the contour lines or coastline. Stage 2 involves bonding each layer onto a specialist modelling board. These sections are then re-cut, again by hand, and reassembled to produce the final model. The models are then mounted in a professionally made frame with anti-reflective glazing, making a great nautical gift or memento. Any section of the UK coastline and beyond can be replicated to create a truly personal piece of artwork. To celebrate making over 100 charts, Landfall Artwork is offering one lucky Marina reader chance to win an A2-size framed model of your chosen area. This will be made from any available Imray 2000 series nautical chart and is worth up to £630. For more information – and to find the competition answer – please visit landfall.co.uk.
How to enter To be in with a chance of winning this incredible prize, all you need to do is answer this question:
Landfall Artwork has charts on display around the world, but which two UK marinas have a Landfall Artwork chart on display? Email your answer, along with your name, address and contact details, to info@marinamag.com. Alternatively, pop it on a postcard and send it to: Landfall competition, Marina Magazine, Leopard Print Media Ltd, 130 Old Street, London EC1V 9BD. Terms and conditions: No cash alternative • Closing date is Friday 3 June • The competition prize will be delivered to a UK address • Winners will be announced on Marina’s twitter feed @TheMarinaMag • If you do not wish to receive further news or information from either Marina or Landfall, please make this clear on your entry.
