Marin Theatre Company acknowledges our theatre and administrative offices are located on the ancestral, occupied, and unceded land of the Coast Miwok peoples. We recognize we currently benefit from living and working on their traditional homelands, and affirm their sovereign rights as first peoples. We are committed to learning and to strengthening our relationships with members of our local community, and to work toward dismantling the harmful effects of white supremacy and colonization. We acknowledge the Coast Miwok as the original caretakers of this land. We pay our respects to the Coast Miwok community and their elders both past and present, as well as future generations.
The Coast Miwok, from the areas of Novato, Marshall, Tomales, San Rafael, Petaluma and Bodega, are members of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, a community which includes the Southern Pomo peoples from the Sebastopol area.
We pledge to build relationships with sovereign tribal nations and to never cease ongoing learning, to ensure Marin Theatre Company becomes a more inclusive and welcoming space.

We acknowledge that the country we live in today has been made possible by the labor of enslaved Africans and their descendants. We are indebted to their labor and their sacrifice, and we acknowledge the tremors of anti-Black violence throughout the generations and the resulting impact that can still be felt and witnessed today.
(Language developed by Dr. TJ Stewart)
What a thrilling season we’ve had thus far — and a stunning way to bring it home: Where Did We Sit on the Bus? exemplifies many facets of Marin Theatre Company’s mission. Brian Quijada’s play tells a culturally illuminating, relatable, and groundbreaking story; Satya Chávez’s immense talent creates an incomparable live experience each night; and Matt Dickson’s direction helps create a shape that feels both familiar and surprising.
With all of you here, joining as our audience, the work becomes more than just art — it becomes a bond for our community. Every individual who enters this theatre space, whether to stand on the stage or run the box office or sit in the seats, becomes both contributor and witness to the human experience.
As we continue our end-of-year campaign centered around our unique love for live theatre, 100 Reasons Why We Love Live Theatre, I’m reminded of Audra McDonald’s quote about the beauty and power of this art form: “Theatre is a safe place to take risks, where we can try on new ideas and new ways of thinking.”
We want to not only be the safe space but the brave space that Satya, Matt, Brian, and more artists can utilize to take artistic risks that activate all of us in our seats — and as we leave the theatre — to try on new ideas and new ways of thinking, much like those introduced by the character Bee Quijada and the clean and complex soundscape of Satya’s musical performance.
Bee Quijada’s journey begins with a question and ends with a promise to the future — a promise to tell future generations the truth of their origin so they can carry the story forward. In much the same way, the end of a theatre’s season is actually a beginning, and a promise to the future: this season is closing so we can create a new cycle of profound stories that need to be told. We can promise you cutting-edge and incomparable work; your support can make fulfilling this promise possible, so thank you for joining us in the theatre and being a part of our community. I hope to see you all return as subscribers for our 2023–2024 season as we carry new ideas forward. After all, the final performances of this season simply mark the beginning of the next — and a promise to continue telling our stories.

The Latino Civil Rights Timeline is an online classroom resource for grade levels 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12, created by the organization Learning for Justice. It is a companion piece to the website’s lessons: ‘Understanding the History of Latino Civil Rights’ and ‘Exploring the History of Latino Civil Rights’. “When reading this timeline, it’s important to remember that the fight for civil rights doesn’t happen in a vacuum. In many cases, the events listed have fueled—and have been fueled by—other social justice movements, like the African American Civil Rights Movement and the fight for equal employment and education among Chinese and Japanese immigrants. The Latino civil rights struggle did not begin in 1903 and will not end in September 2006. Watch the news and listen to politicians, and you will see the fight for equal rights for ALL people is not over.” CLICK HERE to view the Timeline.
This online research guide from the Hispanic Reading Room at the Library of Congress focuses on 20th and 21st century American court cases, legislation, and events that had important impacts on civil rights in Chicana/o/x, Hispanic, Latina/o/x, MexicanAmerican and Puerto Rican communities. “Each page provides an overview and timeline of a civil rights topic and some breadth of research material for further study at the Library of Congress or your local library. The first of its kind, this comprehensive online compendium of Civil Rights resources includes references to search and seizure, legal representation, selfincrimination, immigration, medical care, and equal access to educational resources. The Hispanic Reading Room will link this guide to webinar and podcast content in which scholars and community members help contextualize these court cases, legislation, and events. Since civil rights events are ongoing in Latinx communities, these references aim to connect the past with the present.” CLICK HERE to view the Guide, and see “Print Resources” tab for further reading.
In Where Did We Sit on the Bus?, when Bee Quijada is 18 years old, Bee visits Ellis Island in New York City. Bee’s perspective on immigration in America is changed indelibly and months later proclaims:
“Let them dream big when the time calls. Because after all, aren’t immigrants the foundation of our country? So let them in.
Let them in.”
Immigrants, much like Monarch Butterflies, are resilient and persevere as they travel long distances in search of a safer home.
• The Monarch is well known for its ability to travel great distances, and the migrations in North America are one of the greatest natural phenomena in the world.
• Every autumn, millions of Monarch butterflies migrate 3,000 miles from their breeding grounds in northeastern North America to spend the winter in the forests of southwestern Mexico.
• Monarch butterflies must migrate because they cannot survive long, cold northern winters. When they arrive in Mexico, they huddle together on Oyamel Fir trees, [also called sacred fir, native to the mountains of central and southern Mexico and western Guatemala. These trees protect the Monarchs and serve as both a blanket and umbrella during the winter]. Each tree may be blanketed in tens of thousands of ‘roosting’ butterflies. They hang almost motionless in semi-dormancy, surviving the winter on their stored energy.
