Portrait Photography For us, the human beings, there could be nothing more ‘personal’ than a worthy portrait. You look through a pair of eyes and find every single person hiding some emotions deep within. Making of a portrait involves intricate techniques, observant eyes, and a creative mind because a portrait is not supposed to be merely an image; it rather has to hold the essence of the individual personality. Whether it is a gorgeous girl with languid eyes, a rude old man with his skin marked by time, or a child with sad eyes, their portrait has to strike the conscience of a viewer. It has to make them lose their heart. Our job as a photographer is to seize the dream of that girl and make the viewer feel the sourness of the old man’s suffering. Presented here within is a collection of some of the best works of our time.

CATERINA PAGANO Reggio Emilia, Italia

facebook.com/caterina.pagano.90 facebook.com/KateP61/

I was born in a small town in the province of Reggio Calabria and now am living in Reggio Emilia. I graduated with Arts major so I had a sense of aesthetics to start with. I like painting portraits and flowers, which has also transferred to photography, thanks to a person dear to me who transmitted this passion to me.

In 2016 I set up my first exhibition- "famous paintings presented in photography" which had the girl with the pearl earring, the lady with an ermine and many more.. My contributions to Portraiture is a part of my project, which will also be exhibited soon. The photographs are dedicated to the 50s and depicts my models who are girls of today as the divas of yesteryears. 10

CLAUDIO TONIN Venezia, Italia

facebook.com/claudio.tonin.9 facebook.com/claudiotoninphoto/ ebooks “masters - Claudio Tonin on issuu.com facebook.com/groups/fotoreportage.it/ (Editor's note: Caudio Tonn is founder of the "Fotoreportage" group on facebook)

Claudio Tonin was born in Venice on February 13, 1957. Thanks to his parents, who loved traveling, he started traveling with them since he was a small boy and came to know Europe. At 18 years of age, during the military service, he discovered the magic of the darkroom and, from that moment, began his love for photography, especially travel photography.

Over the years he visited all the European countries in campers and subsequently, driven by a constant hunger to know and explore, visited several other non-European countries, among the most important: the United States, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Northern India, Maghreb and Middle East, Tanzania and Kenya, Indonesia and Myanmar. He recently returned to Rajasthan and Myanmar where he mostly photographed people. He organizes photographic trips for small groups and currently in planning are Vietnam and Ethiopia. Since the past few years he has decided to grow qualitatively in photography, moving to professional equipment and dedicating himself to learning and improving post-production techniques. His favorite genre is portraiture, both in the studio and street, especially ethnic. Professionally, he currently holds a managerial position in the Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Group. 22

FRANZ MESSINA Bergamo, Italia

franzmessina.tumblr.com instagram.com/franz_messina/ facebook.com/katrinamessinaphoto/

I am Francesco Buonsante, for everyone but in the art circles I am better known as Franz Messina. Whenever I am introducing myself I am representing a dichotomy as a professor at a school in my real life and as a photography enthusiast in my parallel reality. I took up photography indirectly. I dealt with musical entertainments and events, with radios and televisions. It occurred to have a photographer for these events come as a big extra expense. As an accountant I did not like spending without understanding the real value of a job. For this reason, without ever taking pictures before, I decided to try, as a simple exercise and not with due preparation.

Soon enough I realized that "Photography causes addiction and I have suffered the same". That's why, perhaps because of a form of anhedonia that I had, I approached intermittently at photography, trying and experimenting in an inconsistent way, taking gaps of even months sometimes, always dissatisfied with the work done. In the last few years something changed in my vision for photography. The dissatisfaction, the capacity for self-criticism and the transference between teaching towards my students and myself pushed me in a very precise direction, looking for the minimalist style that characterizes me today, but which I know is only one stage of a longer path. In the last two years I have got some satisfaction, including the publication of my photos on the online platform of Vogue magazine, the participation in several photographic shows in Italy and the publication of my interviews and editorials on several international magazines. I have also started working with various fashion agencies. 34

HENK VELDHUIZEN Alphen aan den Rijn, The Netherlands

www.hajeve-pictures.nl www.facebook.com/hajevepictures Instagram: hajeve_pictures

Working with people is what I like most. For a beautiful portrait photo good cooperation is required, as are the shared ideas on what the end-result shall look like. A portrait photo that makes a difference is one that is really different from what one normally sees in the mirror. That is what I take as a challenge. I am Dutch and I studied at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague. I play drums as well as keyboard and piano. I teach young and adult people. With my students I have made several theater productions in which I had the responsibility for the overall design, the musical content, the choreography and the costumes. This experience also supports my photography ambitions in a way.

I am an autodidact photographer and have discovered portrait photography as my passion. I try to capture the different aspects of the unique individual in front of me, with careful attention to light conditions and background. It is my challenge to create a portrait photo that forces the onlooker to look at it a bit longer. A portrait must provoke a thinking about who the subject person really is, what are his or her emotions and thoughts, and what were the photographer’s intentions in making this portrait photo. I leave it to the one who sees it to find answers to these questions. Being proud of his or her own portrait is always a wonderful experience for people. For myself it is simply fantastic to work with people in such creative processes. 46

MANUEL POGGIALI Roma, Italia

facebook.com/manuel.poggiali.16 500px.com/manuel19precog

My name is Manuel and I am 47 years old. I was born live in Rome. Since I was a child, I have always been attracted to photography. I started this for fun when I was 10, with a Polaroid instant camera. I enjoyed photographing my parents, my brother and my friends. For many years I did not pursue photography, but in the nineties I started shooting with an old Russian camera. With the birth of digital photography, I resumed photographing in a regular way, realizing some of my projects.

Photography has become an important aspect of my life, a great passion, a way to express myself through an image. It’s a continuous comparison with other people, with life, with the world around me. When I photograph I draw inspiration from cinema, literature and music. When I'm around the town, I always stop by to observe people, their movements. I like to imagine their lives, I try to get into their thoughts. 58

NELITA SPECCHIERLA Lucca, Italia

facebook.com/idearteeventi/ facebook.com/nelitaspecchierlaphotography

I was born in Lucca and continue to live in this wonderful city. I am a primary school teacher by profession. I started clicking photographs 5 years ago, for fun, and to document the educational activities carried out with my students and to edit films for foreign country partners of the Comenius Project. Over the time, I realized that my passion for photography grew more and more and so I bought my first camera. I attended a course of basic technique and, later, courses in image and creativity, photo editing and above all a course in black and white also aimed at the press.

I always carry a camera with me and I almost always use fixed optics. It can be said that for almost 4 years I have been taking photography quite seriously. My favorite genres are street and portraiture, with a preference for black and white. I love to photograph with natural light, using the play of light and dark. During past two years I have participated in several national exhibitions, some of which have been designed and organized by the cultural association "IdeArte" of which I am the president. I think that photography should give emotions both to those who shoot and those who observe the photos: the image must tell a story encapsulated in a moment. 70

ROSSELLA VICCICA Catania, Italia

www.rossellaviccica.com facebook.com/R.Viccicafoto

Photography has always been a love of mine. However, I began to seriously study photography and post production only a few years ago. I started with landscape photos and then fell in love with the portraiture in all its facets. I love how the lights play with the beauty and enhance it.

I participated in various art exhibitions in Catania, Taormina, Castelmola and Ortigia. I like to always experiment with new things, learn and grow, and believe that you never stop learning. I love watching all kinds of photography and from time to time shoot different genres while continuing to love the portrait that gives me emotions that I can not try with other genres. 82
