INTRODUCTION : Street

Street photography involves capturing ephemeral moments when subject matter, mood, composition, and light come together to create a meaningful or artistic photograph. The challenge of street photography—and its unique appeal—is finding a way to turn the mundane things we see every day into art. It encapsulates the unforgettable moments of life before they become history, small stories of our existence that would be lost in the flow of time if not captured and portrayed in an image and made immortal. Street life, like most other genres in photography, works around effective composition. It involves anticipation and since as the photographer you don’t usually have the choice of moving your subjects, you have to shift your position or wait for that decisive moment when the subject is right where and doing right what you expected them to do. Street photography may oftentimes be confused with the genre called Reportage. The fine difference lies in the intent and the basic principles about truly documenting the contents. Street life comes with a baggage of ethnic order as some street moments that the westerners define as exotic may be the everyday life for those who live in those places. The Street Photography has many nuances and may range from minimal style to a social report that documents the evils of a society tending to exclude and marginalize the weaker. But these are just a few facets of Street Life and those challenges many a time act as the major puller to the artists of this genre. The presented work is the finest collection of art and we hope that you will enjoy every bit of it.

Born in 1964, I have been living in Ancona since birth.

I grew passionate about photography seven years ago while trying to capture the emotions I felt looking at the nature surrounding me. With travel, I began to appreciate street photography that always entailed the stolen glances of the people, moments of humanity crystallized in a single click, a representation of everyday life to which, in some way, at that moment, I belong. To the outside world, a colorful world. 10

FABRIZIO FONTANA Chiasso, Svizzera

www.fotocineclubchiasso.ch

After a basic training in economics, I worked for a short period in that sector. One day I left for a trip that lasted several months as I travelled to France, Spain, Morocco and Portugal. Back from the trip, my life changed radically. I quit my job, left my family and devoted myself to cultural and social activities. I became an amateur actor and later decided to take this up professionally. In Milan I studied anthropology of the show at Comuna Baires and modern dance. After moving to Paris, after a first circus experience, I continued my training with various well known teachers. Destiny wanted to take me to Rome where I started working in the world of entertainment and cinematography.

During my entire life, amateur photography accompanied me, thanks to my brother Silvano who was a professional photographer at that time. Black and white has always been the most appropriate photographic expression to me, although I do not deny feeling envy and admiration in front of color masterpieces such as the photographs of the great Steve McCurry. Attracted and involved in the world of literature and in life, the "street" was, and still is, an idyllic vision. It is a means that allows me to cross territories, visit countries but above all meet new realities and new characters. Being able to fix these moments in photography is an important goal for me that I am working on in order to learn and apply new techniques and different visions 22

LEONARDO RICCI Sant’Arcangelo di Romagna, Italia

I am a 57 year old amateur photographer with great passion for black and white.

I love photography for my fascination of being able to seize the moments of time forever. I firmly believe that every moment is filled with eternal light and it is our responsibility as humans to capture them in the frame of time so that they can be remembered in future. I join long photography walks and eventually find myself reviving them in my own shots later. I have participated in several photographic exhibitions related to the Marche landscapes. I want to give a face to the emotions through my photographs. 34

VILI GOŠNAK Ljubljana, Slovenia

instagram.com/vgosnak/ http://bit.ly/2ZNNsme

I was born in 1955 in Pula, a coastal town in Croatia. I have been a lover of photography since my tender youth, and am passionate about street photography, especially street portraiture. My inspiration is my grandmother, who would travel alone with the camera in her hand, capturing the places and people everywhere she stayed. She was the cause of my early interest in photography when she permitted me to “touch” her 1935 Voightländer Bessa folder camera, which is still in my possession.

My actual tryst with photography started when I bought my first camera, a Yashica Lynx 1.4E and started to learn photography from books and magazines. In the ‘80s, I had passion for concert photography using Kodachrome and Nikon F3. I never really noticed the people around me, until I moved to live in Tunisia. There I suddenly discovered the treasures hidden in facial expressions of randomly shot portraits and spontaneous events that happened on the street. I started to be part of the street and visited every time I had some spare time. I am convinced that for taking a good street photograph you should know and feel the street. You will find some of the characters that involuntarily became my main actors, in the following pages that I hope you will flip through with interest. 58

YONA ELIG Geneva, Switzerland

It is so difficult to talk about yourself. I wished somebody else would do it for me but apparently “We are our own best advocates as the saying goes. I will just say that I started photography some years ago and it has been a passion since then. I tried to develop a style that suited my images, taking my time and working on every single image that I felt told a story.

I am more of an ‘interior’ photographer rather than a street photographer. I am attracted to street cafĂŠs and museums, to their intimacy, atmosphere and the mood that evokes therein during their interactions. I take my time to capture those moments that most of the time may last for only an instant. I take home those moments and work on them by painting light, contrasts, and texture so that the main subject or the story gets in full focus. A variation of light and shadows that it plays with the people. I shoot people usually gossiping with friends, reading newspapers, talking on phone, or scrolling their laptop and more. This is what I try to capture in my images. It is a part of their reality, and of course, through my camera, mine too. I like to respect their privacy even if I am stealing a moment of their lives. I even try to capture their thoughts as far as I can. 70

ROSALIE HELLER Baltimore Maryland, United States

Edward Weston said “I start with no preconceived idea - discovery excites me to focus. This is my mantra.

I am an American photographer living in Baltimore. Growing up and even now I virtually frame everything that catches my eye as if I were looking through a picture frame. Light and shadow intrigue me. For 30 years I shot film, black and white mostly, and developed the images in my darkroom. The weight of the camera bag became too much for me to carry. Two years ago I discovered that I could capture life on the street with my phone, unnoticed and free from the weight of my heavy cameras and lenses. The images you see here were captured with my Samsung Galaxy 9+ and processed on a tablet using an editing program and my finger as a brush, working the images as if I were back in my darkroom. Photography is my passion. 82
