Marion Kalter HERSTORY

F La photographie de portraits de femmes exceptionnelles (Anaïs Nin, Nadia Boulanger, Susan Sontag, Gina Pane, Joan Mitchell, Gisèle Freund…), de compositeurs (Pierre Boulez, John Cage, Marc-Olivier Dupin, Iannis Xenakis…), de chanteurs, de musiciens… que la photographe réalise lors de répétitions, de concerts ou dans l’intimité de leurs domiciles, au cours d’entretiens… cette approche intimiste, cette complicité, Marion Kalter a su l’établir avec ses modèles. Cette démarche énonce une quête d’identité où visiblement elle était plongée.

Les instants saisis (professionnels, quotidiens) deviennent des paysages où le temps se fige dans l’arrêt de chaque portrait. Tout en continuant cette vivacité, Marion Kalter (à l’âge de vingt-trois ans) va entreprendre cette quête préalablement citée en se mettant en scène devant l’objectif.

Cela s’ancre dans la maison de famille, elle investit les lieux, elle fouille, non pas intentionnalité de dévoilement mais de recherche. Un fantôme, saisi dans le couloir suspendu qui relie deux corps de bâtiments, indique la nudité exhibitionniste d’une présence inabordable venant comme de plus loin que la franchise du visage déjà profanant et profanée, comme si était forcé l’interdit d’un secret.

L’armoire est ouverte, les vêtements sont toujours pendus, la mise en scène opère par ajouts, peinture, gants, miroirs…, puis vient l’insertion du corps dans ce monde cadré (très jeune, elle perd sa mère et sa grand-mère). Une aliénation première de soi qui assure avec les éléments choisis un jeu de possession, de sécurité. S’approprier les vêtements, les objets, les représentations et cette originalité du corps qui tourne et s’expose. La volonté est atteinte, chose parmi les choses : l’armoire est vide, seuls les cintres sont accrochés.

La lumière traverse la pièce, le visage est solennel. Le noir de la robe englobe la scène. Les souvenirs sont sur la table de nuit. Un rideau soulevé par le vent diffuse la clarté et masque un portrait qui se laisse discerner dans le reflet de la vitre d’une

porte. Les anciennes photographies placées dans de petits cadres verticaux s’érigent devant l’autoportrait couché. Le corps se consume devant les flammes qui dansent et s’échappent de l’âtre. L’irréel s’offre au seuil du réel.

Les draps ne recouvrent plus le mobilier. La table est dressée. Une seule présence, un triste et doux souvenir fait appel. L’essence du temps lui-même se dessine dans les boucles de vapeur provenant de la soupière.

L’intimité comme un retour se personnifie au présent, chaque scène de l’enfance est réinterprétée. Le bonnet d’âne à l’école (elle ne parlait pas la langue de ce nouveau lieu), la couronne de la galette des rois (l’épiphanie où apparaît le visage), les peluches maintenues contre le corps (qui ont à voir avec pluches : flocons de poussières) … ces voiles irradiés de lumière comme une obsession théâtrale d’un délicat et grave mystère de l’être qui remonte dans ces représentations d’un voilé / dévoilé. Cette vie lointaine alloue un retour sur soi, reconstruit une identité.

Les vêtements énoncent l’époque de chaque scène. La chevelure confirme le choix du tailleur. L’apparition de la photo­ graphie illustre les magazines du XIXème siècle qui depuis s’enchaînent (la mode devient l’histoire). Buste parmi les épines, visage distancié de sa préhension, les frisottis renouvellent la feuillaison.

Les autoportraits réalisés avec le miroir, l’appareil tenu à la main ou sur pied, la tête dans un cadre rappellent l’histoire de la photographie et surtout celle américaine des années 1975 – 76 … Bien avant … Le père avec le masque de Groucho Marx incline la tête, il sait qu’il retourne en Amérique, son parcours et sa fin sont sur la carte épinglée derrière lui, la guerre est finie.

Le canapé où le modèle fixe l’objectif assure la possession de soi et se montre nu. Corsage ouvert, nudité qui exprime l’amour, mais éprouve l’incapacité à le dire dans un face à face et l’exhibe. Marion Kalter frappe à la porte de l’être. Il y a un appel à l’autre dans tous ces autoportraits.

La représentation éclot, cette possibilité d’apparence s’impose dans cette succession de tous ces instants arrachés au temps.

Douceur et froideur objective, dans la substance du temps lui-même qui va à l’agonie, diffusent une douleur, une mélancolie de l’absence, un travail de deuil, une quête de soi. Aucun horizon, « le féminin offre un visage qui va au-delà du visage » (Emmanuel Lévinas).

Au Mexique, le corps n’a plus vingt ans. Il le manifeste dans la chambre de Frida Khalo devant un squelette provenant de la fête des morts. Il est debout devant le lit de cette artiste. Au second plan se trouve un baldaquin (au-dessus d’un deuxième lit) avec un miroir pour ciel.

Cet élément est le déclencheur des peintures autoportraits de l’artiste citée.

Mais là … rien … du noir et blanc.

Devant les personnages en plâtre de l’univers de Disney, dans cette fabrique de nouvelles idoles, le visage devient masque, il perce l’image / écran des convenances, vient troubler les nouveaux rituels de la possible fête. Ce masque mortuaire s’impose au lieu de laisser voir.

Le corps est couché ou surpris dans sa chute sur un sentier matérialisé d’une courbe dans l’obscurité. Une pierre est prise et maintenue contre la face.

Au seuil du jardin, une pelle, un balai, un automate, aucune vérité, il faut faire tomber les masques, ce qui est cher à Witold Gombrowicz.

Les yeux sont souvent fermés, il n’y a aucun sourire, nous ne sommes pas là pour poser.

Une vie avec ses sentiments, son parcours, l’enfance, l’adolescence, la maturité, sans tricherie, malhonnêteté, filouterie à accepter ou à découvrir. Cela vient, coule, se poursuit (tout en sachant la perte), ses engagements, ses illusions. Les évènements qui remplissent les espaces de temps. Le réel qui marque à chaque pas, construit et défait le corps, le transforme.

Une fenêtre est ouverte, la nature est grise et striée de traits blancs (les jours sont énumérés d’incisions sur les murs des prisons) : il pleut.

D Die Fotoporträts außergewöhnlicher Frauen (Anaïs Nin, Nadia Boulanger, Susan Sontag, Gina Pane, Joan Mitchell, Gisèle Freund …), Komponisten (Pierre Boulez, John Cage, Marc-Olivier Dupin, Iannis Xenakis …), Sänger und Musiker …, die Marion Kalter bei Proben, Konzerten oder in Gesprächen zu Hause bei ihnen realisiert hat, zeichnen sich durch eine spürbare Nähe und Vertrautheit aus, die die Fotografin mit den von ihr porträtierten Künstlern zu schaffen verstanden hat. Dieses Vorgehen Vorgehen ist der Ausdruck ihrer Suche nach Selbstfindung, die ihr ganz offensichtlich am Herzen liegt.

Die festgehaltenen Momente (beruflicher oder alltäglicher Art) werden zu Landschaften, in denen die Zeit zum Stillstand kommt. Parallel dazu dehnt Marion Kalter (ab ihrem 23. Lebensjahr) die oben erwähnte Suche aus, indem sie sich selbst vor ihrem Objektiv in Szene setzt.

Den äußeren Rahmen bildet dafür ihr Elternhaus, das sie von oben bis unten durchstöbert, aber nicht etwa mit der Absicht etwas zu enthüllen, sondern zu vertiefen. Als sich Marion Kalter wie eine geisterhafte Erscheinung auf einem Gang zwischen zwei Gebäuden fotografiert, wird in dem Foto die exhibitionistische Nacktheit einer unerreichbaren Präsenz angedeutet, die aus größerer Ferne zu kommen scheint als die Offenheit des überraschten und zugleich überraschenden Gesichts, geradezu als handele es sich um den Bruch eines Tabus.

Der Kleiderschrank ist offen, die Klei­der hängen noch dort, die Inszenier­ ung besteht darin, dass Schritt für Schritt Elemente hinzugefügt werden: ein Gemälde, Handschuhe, ein Spiegel … und dann taucht ihr Körper in diesem genau definierten Rahmen auf (sie hat ihre Mutter und ihre Großmutter schon als Heranwachsende verloren). Die erste Selbstentfremdung, die mit Hilfe der hinzugefügten Elemente zu einem Spiel der Besitzergreifung, des sich Sicherfühlens wird. Es heißt, sich der Kleider, der Gegenstände, der Darstellung und der Origi­ nalität dieses Körpers zu bemächtigen,

der sich dreht, wendet und zur Schau stellt.

Der Wille ist gebrochen, ein Ding unter Dingen: der Schrank ist leer, nur die Bügel hängen noch darin.

Das Schlafzimmer wird von einem Lichtstrahl durchquert, der Gesichtsausdruck ist ernst. Das Schwarz des Kleids verschmilzt mit der Szene. Auf dem Nachttisch befinden sich Erinnerungsstücke.

Ein vom Wind hochgehobener Vorhang strahlt Helligkeit aus und verdeckt ein Porträt, das sich in der Scheibe einer Tür widerspiegelt. Ein Selbstbildnis liegend hinter alten Fotos in kleinen Stehrahmen. Der Körper wird von Flammen verzehrt, die aus dem offenen Kamin lodern. Das Irreale bietet sich an der Schwelle zum Realen dar.

Die Laken bedecken das Mobiliar nicht mehr. Der Tisch ist gedeckt. Eine einzige Präsenz, eine traurige und zugleich süße Erinnerung, setzt ein Zeichen.

Die Essenz der Zeit zeichnet sich in den Dampfschwaden ab, die aus der Suppenterrine aufsteigen.

Die Intimität als Rückkehr verkörpert sich in der Gegenwart, jede Szene der Kindheit wird neu interpretiert. Die Eselskappe in der Schule (Marion Kalter beherrschte die Sprache ihres neuen Wohn­ orts nicht), die Krone des Dreikönigs­ kuchens (Epiphania, die Erscheinung des Gesichts), die an den Körper gepressten Stofftiere (deren französische Bezeichnung etwas mit Staubflocken zu tun hat) … diese lichtdurchfluteten Schleier wie eine theatralische Zwangsvorstellung von einem zarten, wichtigen Geheimnis des Seins, das in dieser Veranschaulichung des Verhüllens und Enthüllens zum Ausdruck kommt. Dieses Leben aus ferner Zeit ermöglicht die Rückkehr zu sich selbst, die Selbstfindung.

Die Kleider bringen die Epoche jeder Szene zum Ausdruck. Die Haartracht unterstreicht die Wahl der Kostüme. Mit dem Aufkommen der Fotografie verwandeln sich die Zeitschriften des 19. Jahrhunderts in „Illustrierte“, die sich seither vervielfältigt haben (Mode wird zur Zeitgeschichte).

Der Oberkörper dicht hinter einem Dornenstrauch, auf dem Gesicht ein Ausdruck der Distanz vor den Dornen, die Locken erneuern die Belaubung.

Die mit Hilfe eines Spiegels realisierten Selbstporträts (mit dem Fotoapparat in der Hand oder auf einem Stativ und dem Kopf in einem Bilderrahmen) erinnern an die Geschichte der Fotografie, insbesondere an die der amerikanischen aus den Jahren 1975 / 76 … Lange Zeit zuvor …

Der Vater mit der Maske von Groucho Marx neigt den Kopf, er weiß, dass er bald nach Amerika zurückkehrt, sein Weg und dessen Ende sind auf der an die Wand gehefteten Landkarte hinter ihm abzulesen, der Krieg ist zu Ende.

Ein Sofa, auf dem das Modell ins Objektiv blickt und Selbstbeherrschung wahrt, ehe es sich nackt zeigt. Entblößter Oberkörper, eine Nacktheit, die Liebe ausdrückt, aber auch die Unmöglichkeit, das Auge in Auge auszudrücken, und das zur Schau stellt. Marion Kalter klopft hier an die Tür des Seins.

In jedem dieser Selbstporträts liegt ein Appel an den Anderen. Die Selbst­ darstellung entfaltet sich, die möglichen Daseinsweisen behaupten sich in der Folge all dieser der Zeit entrissenen Augenblicke.

Objektive Kälte und Wärme in der Substanz der im Sterben liegenden Zeit verbreiten Schmerz, eine Melancholie der Abwesenheit, zeugen von Trauerarbeit, der Suche nach dem Ich. Kein Horizont, „die Weiblichkeit bietet ein Antlitz, das über das Antlitz hinausgeht“ (Emmanuel Levinas).

In Mexiko hat sie nicht mehr den Körper einer Zwanzigjährigen. Das wird in Frida Kahlos Schlafzimmer vor einem Skelett deutlich, das vom Fest am Tag der Toten stammt. Sie steht vor dem Bett der Künstlerin. Im Hintergrund ist ein an einem Betthimmel befestigter Spiegel (über einem zweiten Himmelbett) zu sehen. Mit Hilfe dieses Spiegels hat Frida Kahlo ihre ersten Selbstporträts gemalt.

Aber hier … nur Schwarz und Weiß.

Vor den Gipsfiguren der Disneywelt, dieser Fabrik neuer Idole, wird das Gesicht zur Maske, entlarvt das Trugbild tradierter Normen, stört den Frieden neuer Rituale eines möglichen Fests. Der Eindruck einer Totenmaske dominiert, denn das Gesicht gibt nichts preis.

Sie liegt auf dem Boden oder wird bei einem Sturz auf einen Pfad überrascht, der durch eine geschwungene Linie in der Dunkelheit materialisiert wird. Sie hält einen Stein in der Hand, drückt ihn ans Gesicht.

Auf der Schwelle zum Garten steht sie mit einem Kehrblech und einem Besen in den Händen, wie ein Automat, keinerlei Wahrheit, die Masken müssen fallen, wie Witold Gombrowicz sagen würde.

Die Augen sind oft geschlossen, kein Lächeln, wir sind nicht da, um uns in Pose zu stellen.

Ein Leben mit seinen Gefühlen, seinem Weg: die Kindheit, die Jugend, die Reife, ohne Mogelei, ohne Unaufrichtigkeit, ohne Betrug, es ist hinzunehmen oder zu entdecken. Es kommt, fließt dahin, geht weiter (ohne den Verlust zu ignorieren), das Engagement, die Illusionen. Die Ereignisse, die die Zeiträume erfüllen.

Die Realität, die bei jedem Schritt Spuren hinterlässt, den Körper formt und deformiert, ihn verwandelt.

Ein Fenster ist geöffnet, die Natur ist grau und mit weißen Strichen übersät (im Gefängnis werden die Tage durch in die Wand geritzte Striche gezählt): es regnet.

E Photographs of exceptional women (Anaïs Nin, Nadia Boulanger, Susan Sontag, Gina Pane, Joan Mitchell, Gisele Freund …); of composers (Pierre Boulez, John Cage, Marc-Olivier Dupin, Iannis Xenakis …); of singers and musicians … photographs captured during rehearsals, concerts, interviews, or in the intimacy of the artists’ own homes … These photographs establish the sense of familiarity, intimacy, even complicity that Marion Kalter shares with her subjects. Kalter’s approach reveals a quest for identity— self-identity as well as the selfhood of others—a quest she plunges into both visibly and visually.

Moments seized, whether formally or more casually, become landscapes where the fugitive and temporal are arrested in each portrait’s freeze-frame. By age 23, Kalter had already begun this quest for an [oxymoronic] intimate staging before the camera’s lense. That early search was anchored within her childhood house where she combed spaces and captured herself, not in order to produce an intentional reveal, but rather to explore and research the depths of “home”.

A ghost-image caught in the sliver of space between two buildings suggests exhibitionist nudity at the same time that its distant presence asserts the unreacha­ ble; it is both the face of surprise and a surprised face, an apparition whose presence is the assertion and breaking of taboo, the forced interdiction of a secret.

Likewise, a wardrobe is opened, clothes are left hanging, the choreography of the scene operates via additions (a painting, gloves, mirrors) … then comes the inser­ tion of a body, Kalter’s body, into this composed world, a world in which a very young Kalter lost both her mother and grandmother, a world whose alienation and loss is now assuaged by the security and staging of reassuring possessions.

It is here among the appropriation of cloth­ing and other objects, amid the composed presentation, that the body inserts and exposes itself. The originality of this body carries the possibility of choice, of

movement, of taking possession. But the will is broken, it is a thing among things: the cabinet is empty, only the hangers remain.

A beam of light passes through the bedroom, the facial expression is sober.

The blackness of a dress envelops the scene. Memories lie on a bedside table.

A breeze lifts a curtain, and light from its window both illuminates and obscures a portrait that can be glimpsed behind the reflection in a pane of glass.

A series of old photographs are lined up in vertical frames, behind them lies a self-portrait; its body is consumed by flames that flicker and escape from an open hearth. Like an offering, the unreal is presented on the threshold of reality.

Sheets no longer cover the furniture.

The table is set. There is only a single presence. A memory, simultaneously sad and sweet, begins to take shape.

The essence of time emerges within the curling wisps of steam emitted from a soup tureen.

Intimacy takes the form of recurrence embodied in the present where childhood memories are freshly explored and reinterpreted. A dunce cap (from the school where Kalter had not yet mastered the language of her new residence); the king’s crown from an Epiphany celebration (epiphany meaning apparition of the face); the fluff of stuffed animals pressed against her body (the French term “pelushes,” meaning stuffing, being a homophone for “pluches” which indicates particles of dust) … These light-emanating veils present like a theatrical obsession surfacing from the ephemeral and existential quest for the Secret of Being surfacing as they do from a point of departure of both disguising and revealing. This life long-ago lived, returns upon itself to reconstruct its own identity.

The clothes identify the period of individual scenes. The hairstyles underscore these epochs. Just as photography has done since the nineteenth century when it began to appear in magazines as illustrations of contemporary history, so fashion in Kalter’s work reveals history. An upper torso behind a thorn bush, the face

recoiling behind the thorns while locks of hair cascade in tight curls that complete the foliage. The self-portraits executed with mirrors, with hand-held camera or the use of a tripod and with the head contained within a frame, recall the history of photography, especially that of the 1970s.

Taken long before these, an image of Kalter’s father tilting his head toward the camera from behind his desk and wearing a Groucho Marx mask. He knows he will be returning to America from Germany; his work and its completion are laid out as clearly as the sign stapled to the map on the wall behind him which reads: The War Is Over.

Lying upon a sofa, the subject looks directly into the lens and asserts selfcontrol before revealing her nudity. Bodice open, it is a nudity that both expresses love and its simultaneous impossibility in this face-to-face exhibitionism. Here, Marion Kalter knocks on the door of Being.

There is a dialogue among all these self-portraits. Kalter’s self-representations unfold as the potentialities of existencein-succession: a web of scenarios, possibili­ ties and meanings embedded in moments wrested from time.

Surfacing as either a forgiving softness or objective coldness, the essence of time-as-dying forges ahead spreading pain: the melancholy of absence, testaments of mourning, and a quest for one’s self. In the absence of a horizon, “the feminine offers a face beyond the face.” (Emmanuel Lévinas) In Mexico, Kalter no longer has the body of a twenty-year-old. She asserts this in the bedroom of Frida Khalo before a skeleton from the Day of the Dead. Kalter stands before the bed of the artist; in the background is a second bed with a canopy-­ mounted mirror at the top of its four poster bedframe. Kahlo used this mirror to paint her first self-portraits, but here [in Kalter’s photograph] … nothing … only black and white.

In front of plaster characters from Disney World, that factory of new idols, the face becomes a mask that exposes the illusion of the normative and intercepts new rituals at this party. The death mask

comes to dominate precisely because the face itself has nothing to reveal.

The body lies recumbent or is startled along a path by a curve in the dark. Kalter holds a stone in her hand and presses it against her face. Likewise, she stands at the threshold of the garden with a dustpan and broom in her hands, like a machine, without truth, the mask inevitably falls (that which is so dear to Witold Gombrowicz).

Her eyes are often closed, there is no smile, we are not there to observe a “pose.”

A life—with its feelings, its journeys, its childhood, adolescence and maturity, without cheating, dishonesty or shadiness— a life to accept or to discover. Life comes, it flows and goes on (all the while acknowledging the losses) with its commitments, its illusions. The events, those that fill-in the spaces of time. Reality that at every step leaves its imprint, forms and deforms the body, and finally transforms it.

A window is open, nature appears grey and streaked with white lines (like the marking of days that are scratched onto the walls of prisons); it is raining.
