APPROACH TO THE BRIEF CONCEPT/ BACKGROUND DRIVERS

THE IMPORTANCE OF OUTSIDE CONNECTION

FOOD-CENTRIC COMMUNITY

MELBOURNE’S GROWTH AND SPATIAL ADAPTIBILTY

It has been proven that a person’s health and wellbeing are dependent on a connection in nature. This relationship and its corresponding architectural study is called biophillic design. As a simple example, a person living or occupying a space with artificial lighting and ventilation is proven to be less productive and more at risk to mental and physical health problems, which can result in stress, depression, and unfitness.

Food brings people together across various different backgrounds. The first cohousing development procured in Denmark fostered the idea of dining together. This spirit spreads around Scandinavian countries but is seemingly forgotten as ‘cohousing’ becomes globally noticed.

Melbourne is the fastest growing city in Australia, which is expected to house between 8.6 to 12 million people by 2066 (ABS). This population boom has created a housing crisis in Victoria.

Amidst the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, the importance of an outdoor natural connection has increased tremendously. In the initial harsh lockdowns in Italy, people were spotted doing activities such as playing music, holding yoga classes, through their balconies as they are not allowed to interact communally. Similar occurences can also be seen in various other countries. It has also been noticed that people who lives in apartments that is not properly designed with natural elements are more prone to sickness and mentally unhealthy.

Food and dining complements the notion of humans as social beings. The longtable allows the creation of bonds and relationship across the community. In our design, we propose the return to the food-centric community, where each residents bond over the longtable. Complemented with on-site fruit and vegetable produce and local shop ensured a community effort. Both elements established a well designed dining community.

In our design, we propose the provision of private open spaces in every unit, wheter in the form of balconies, terraces, backyards, or verandahs complemented with full-height windows to preserve and improve residents’ wellbeing.

As apartments in the inner city and CBD becomes more expensive , not flexible, and poorly designed for the sake of capital, family living becomes undesirable. Young millenials and families are eyeing the middle suburbs where new activity centers around transport access are growing. The middle suburbs is targeted as the young and growing are willing to sacrifice distance for quietness, greenery, and a backyard. We envisioned a future where the middle suburbs are densified enough to change into an inner suburb character of medium density multi-residential apartments and shopfronts. While the middle suburbs will turn into an inner-city character, the inner city will turn into a CBD character will multiple highrises. We also envisioned these new urban centers in the middle ring to grow into satellite cities. The need for densification will reach a critical point where the suburb must undertook massive recharacterization while still preserving enough amenity and character on a reduced square meter per family. In our design, we propose flexible spaces which can be transformed into additional units or a commercial opportunity as well as large units to cater for large families and aging in place.

APPROACH TO THE BRIEF DESIGN STATEMENT AND DIAGRAMS

DESIGN STATEMENT INSERT: NEW AGE NATURAL LIVING INSERT is a statement acting as a departure from the current mediumdensity dwelling typologies that takes into account the future densification of Melbourne’s middle ring while preserving the qualities of the suburb and nature. The project serves the young and growing millenials as well as the large economically stagnant families that needs large and flexible dwellings that allows for aging in place. Ample living areas and amount of bedrooms which can be repurposed or extended prevents residents from expensive relocations and renovations and hardships in finding a new home. Varying degrees of unit types from 2 to 4 bedrooms are available to cater for young and large families, students through retiree.

Communal facilities such as the kitchen, dining, and BBQ area fosters a tightknit mini-community while allowing economic savings for the lower-income residents, complemented with a local fruit and vegetable production on the roof. Commercial opportunities through a local coffeeshop and flexible garage spaces allows for residents to improve their economic sustainability while contributing to the neighborhood. These elements established INSERT as a new multi-residentia typology insert within the suburban fabric.

Each dwelling provides high quality living with large amount of sunlight access and fresh air circulation. A visual and physical connection within the dwelling with the outside through terrace inserts, verandahs, and private courtyards, allows for maintaining and improving mental and physical health and wellbeing.

An underlying structural grid of 1.5m x 1.5m was defined on the site as it is the minimum comfortable spatial size. A central circulation axis connects the front and back yards.

Setbacks according to RESCODE to allow sunlight for neighbors while front and back setbacks for deep soil permeability. Upper form extent to maximum allowable setback at top height.

Terrace inserts for each unit cuts into the form, allowing sun access and natural ventilation as well as connection to outside and nature

Each unit has in possesion a private courtyard lightwell for light and air, creating a sense of ownership of the development.

SOLAR ACCESS AND SHADOWS

Ground floor units have private open spaces which acts as a flexible space for unit expansion or other means. Garage flexible spaces allows for commercial opportunities over time.

Rooftop gardens acts as a replacement of the greenery the building occupies. Fruit & vegetable patch is located in the northern side for maximum sun access, while the communal BBQ area is located on the southern side for comfortable serene shading.

Timber slats operable panels acts as privacy screening, weather protection, as well as sun shading system for the building.

Each unit has northern sunlight access. Solar PV panels on the rooftop are guaranteed consistent power production while the building form itself does not heavily intrudes on neighboring properties.

APPROACH TO THE SITES ADAPTABILITY, SCALABILITY, & REPLICABILITY TWO LOT ADAPTABILITY 30.2 M X 42.6 M | 1286.52 SQM The two lot model is a modest insert to the suburban fabric. THREE LOT ADAPTABILITY 45.3 M X 42.6 M | 1929.78 SQM

FOUR LOT ADAPTABILITY 30.2 M X 85.2 M | 2573.04 SQM

The three lot model turned the concept into a pure near square form, a more representative urban village. A second entryway and a unit’s private garden is added alongside 6 new courtyards, bringing the number of courtyards to 12. New communal spaces are added which can include an outdoor yoga space and an expanded outdoor BBQ area with a reflection and sport area.

The four lot model created a central thoroughfare through the building, as each courtyard acts as a thresholds for the circulation. The form becomes a long extrusion turning itself as a laneway arcade. There are a total of 15 courtyards and several new communal spaces which can include a second fruit and veggie garden and a Japanese style outdoor baths (rotenburo).
