Elected District Board Positions By: Teasha Kirkwood, District Governor

Hey WUMily! (WUM=family) Anywho, convention is quickly coming up and I can’t help but to wonder where has the time gone?! As I think about convention, I get super excited thinking about the members who will soon be taking over and serving the great members of this district. If you are thinking about running for an elected position or applying for a chairperson position ask yourself just one question “Do you want to serve others and make a difference?”. If the answer to that question is YES then you should do it. You may feel inexperienced or you may feel uncertain or may be terrified of the new responsibility, however your passion for service, generated from your heart, will always show. Therefore, I encourage three things: 1) talk to the person currently in that position, 2) read about some of the responsibilities of the elected positions below, and 3) RUN and/or APPLY!

Governor: Being the Governor is a huge responsibility and great honor. As the face of the district your responsibilities are varied between club, district, and International duties. For example, some club level responsibilities include communicating with club presidents in weekly emails and visiting clubs. District board responsibilities include planning and running district officer training, creating agendas and running board meetings and supporting and directing as needed the board members as they plan events and work with clubs. And lastly, as the face of the district, representing the members, from working with the International trustee to attending International committee meetings. The Governor wears many hats and reads a LOT of emails, staying organized is the key to success! Questions about this position can be directed toward Teasha at teasha.kirkwood.cki@gmail.com.

District Secretary: The District Secretary is a valuable asset to the district board and to the membership. By assisting club secretaries with the Membership Update Center and collecting service hours, to taking detailed meeting minutes and compiling a district directory of all district and club officers, the district secretary is definitely an important member of the team! Questions about this position can be directed toward Megan at mlaufenberg49@gmail.com.

Our Circle K Family History Elected District Board Positions District Treasurer: The District Treasurer takes the complication out of budgets, vouchers, and math in general and makes it significantly less confusing! Keeping the district and district board members from going into the red is great responsibility of the district treasurer. And they get to write and sign checks, and balance the district books who wouldn’t want to do that?! Questions about this position can be directed toward Sara at sara.hujar@gmail.com.

District Bulletin Editor: Beautiful monthly publications (a minimum of 5 required) are the fruit of a talented creative editor. Similar to a magazine editor, the District Bulletin Editor, creates a magazine that exemplifies the amazing things that clubs and members do in the district. From requesting articles to assisting club bulletin editors, the District Bulletin Editor is vital to finding creative methods for showing off the district! Questions about this position can be directed toward Marissa at marissabmore@gmail.com.

Lieutenant Governors (LTG) (Divisional): LTGs are amazingly talented people. They work with every club in their division to achieve their goals and to help them be the most successful that they can. LTGs train club officers, send weekly/bi-weekly emails, attend club meetings and events, plan divisional events, and promote divisional unity. So if you love your division, then running for LTG is a no brainer! Questions about these positions can be directed to the following: Capital: Five, fiveyang01@gmail.com Chippewa: Kirstie, polzinkk.cki@gmail.com Lakes: Taylor, lakesltg@gmail.com Metro: Jim, JDTammen@gmail.com Southeast: Lia, liaslepicka@gmail.com Superior: Sean, superiorltg@gmail.com All elected officers are expected to all scheduled board meetings and district sponsored events. If you want to know what dates have already been set for the 2015-2016 WUM Circle K year please email District Administrator Janet DeGroot at janet.degroot@gmail.com for that information.

A note from the ELIMINATE Chairwoman... Take a moment and think about what you can do with less than $2….not too much, right? That’s where many of us are mistaken. You can actually do amazing things with just $1.80, like save a life! It is amazing to think that just one person can make such a significant impact with such an insignificant amount of money: that person could be you! The Eliminate Project needs your help to end the awful disease of maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT)! Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus and when help is needed, of course, Circle K is there to support! The terrible truth is that MNT is completely preventable yet it kills nearly 60,000 newborn children every year along with a significant number of women. Tetanus may not sound like a big deal to us because we get our tetanus shots, however the effects of the disease are excruciating for those without the same resources. If infected with neonatal tetanus, tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch: this means a mother cannot even comfort her dying baby and can only sit by and watch. Together we can protect the connection and the lives of countless mothers and their children! The Eliminate Project will take a total of $110 million—and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Collectively, we have reached almost $74 million in fundraised money! This is amazing, but we are not quite there. Together, we can reach our District's Goal of raising $10,000 for the Eliminate Project this year, saving 5,555 lives! The Eliminate Project is officially into its final year and we want to end it with a bang by eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus from the remaining 24 struggling countries. Help save a life; help change the world! The next move is yours,

Casey Scheibengraber Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Circle K 2014-2015 Eliminate Project Chairperson

For only $35 you can build your wardrobe and save SIX lives! Who doesn't need a good sweater in WUM?!

Second Do your own Eliminate Project fundraiser! This could be as simple as a piggy bank that you save all of your change in for a month, or even putting on a fun social with your club. There are endless amounts of opportunities to fundraiser for this great cause.

This needs someone to move (“I, (name), move to vote for the position of ___ by acclimation”). This motion requires a second (“I, (name), second the motion”). You have elected (name) as your (year and position). **Continue this process for as many positions as needed** If more than one person is running for a position: Voting is to be done by ballot. Write the names correctly for everyone to see. Each paid member gets a slip of paper on which they write the name of the person running. Have your Kiwanis advisor tally the vote. **Circle K uses the “drop down” rule. This means that any person not elected to the position that they originally ran for. For example… Derek Jeter AND Babe Ruth are running for Vice President. Derek Jeter wins the ballot vote. Babe Ruth can choose to drop down and run for Secretary if he so chooses.

DISTRICT CONVENTION: DIVERGENT FACTIONS There are many things that differentiate the factions. Being in your faction does not simply define how you act, but what you wear, eat, do for fun, and what jobs you have. Each faction has its own piece of society, in a sense, and its own way of life. To prepare yourself for your aptitude test, learning some things about the different factions may be very important. If you are interested in taking your aptitude test today, email DCON Chair Samantha Robinson at samantha.robinson.cki@gmail.com and she will go over the aptitude test with you as well as your results!

ABNEGATION FACTION PHYSICAL TRAITS: Clothing is gray and simple. The only adornment allowed is a watch. Female Abnegation typically wear their hair in a bun/knot. RELATIONS: On good terms with Amity; unknown relationship with Candor; on neutral terms with Dauntless but opposing views on violence; rivals to power-seeking Erudite. JOBS: Caregiver, Nurse, Social Services, Cook, Politician, any other job that others do not want.

DAUNTLESS FACTION PHYSICAL TRAITS: All-black clothes, tattoos, piercings, unnatural hair colors. RELATIONS: On neutral terms with all factions.

JOBS: Security guard, Police officer/Detective/Firefighter, Lifeguard, Driver, Construction, Gate guard, Tattoo artist, or Dauntless leader

16

16

ERUDITE FACTION PHYSICAL TRAITS: Most members wear glasses no matter how perfect their vision is, to give the appearance of intelligence. Each member must wear at least one piece of blue clothing as they believe it a calming color that helps stimulate the brain. RELATIONS: On good terms with Amity and Dauntless; on neutral terms with Candor; harbors a fierce grudge against Abnegation who form the government, a power they seek. They believe them to not be as selfless as they claim. JOBS: Librarian, Scientist, Teacher, IT Tech, Engineer, Doctor, and Inventor.

AMITY FACTION PHYSICAL TRAITS: Members dress comfortably in red and yellow clothing. Their dress code is less formal than other factions, as long as it is bright and pleasant. RELATIONS: On good terms with Abnegation; on very good terms with Erudite who provide them with farming inventions; opposing views on violence to Dauntless but on neutral terms; a slight rivalry with Candor, who believe "those who seek peace will always deceive to keep the waters calm" suggesting Amity can be dishonest. RELATIONS: Artist, Counselor, Bartender, Daycare, Farmer, and Musician.

CANDOR FACTION PHYSICAL TRAITS: Black & white clothes, because they see the truth as black & white. They dress formally, with suits & ties being standard uniform with men, & women seen in long skirts, while their everyday clothing is typically black pants & white shirts. RELATIONS: A slight rivalry with Amity, who they believe would deceive in order to ensure peace; unknown relationship with Abnegation, though its likely they would see them similar to Amity, seeing selfdenial as a form of lying (to oneself), on good terms with Dauntless, probably because honesty & bravery can tie together; to Dauntless, on neutral terms with Erudite. JOBS: Banker, Accountant, Manager, Bookkeeper, Judge, and Financial advisor.

Caroling for a Cause By: Mandy Gallo, Edgewood Circle K President

On Tuesday December 9th, Edgewood College Circle K and UWMadison Circle K joined together to bring holiday cheer to the door steps of residents within the Monroe neighborhood in Madison. In total, seven Circle Ker’s joined together to go caroling on this not so cold winter night. Although our numbers were down from the previous years, the passion for raising money for The Eliminate Project was not. After singing our hearts out for a total of almost two hours, we were able to raise just over $150 dollars for The Eliminate Project. That means we were able to pay for a total of 83 tetanus vaccines and all we had to do was serenade people for a few hours. I could not be more proud of both clubs. Way to help rid the world of maternal and neonatal tetanus!

Whitewater Whitewater participates annually in the Make A Difference Day event that happens at Whitewater. The two-day event focuses on cleaning up the surrounding areas of Whitewater on Friday (all day) and then solely Whitewater on Saturday. This event brings together not only Circle K members, but also connects members with members of other organizations in an effort to better the community and surrounding areas.

Whitewater Circle K holds a monthly event called Banana Night in which members of our club visit with members of the community at the local senior living facility, Fairhaven. It's called Banana night because residents are offered a banana when we visit. Both residents at Fairhaven and members of UW-Whitewater Circle K enjoy these monthly visits.

Letter from the Editor

Dearest WUM Members, I hope you all have been thoroughly enjoying your winter breaks! While I hope there has been plentiful time for rest, I also hope that there has been intentional time to volunteer in the community. January is also a great time to make goals. I encourage everyone to make resolutions to better their health and lifestyle, but it is also a fun challenge to make resolutions to help others. Perhaps you would like to volunteer more this year, or set aside money for a charity or project. Another goal could be to take advantage of leadership opportunities. Circle K is a great place to do this. There are several leadership positions on a club executive board. This would provide you with an opportunity to make a difference locally, in your community and campus. Whether you feel you are more suited as club president or as a chairperson for service projects, there is a leadership position for everyone at the club level. Be sure to check in with your current club executive board so you are informed as to which positions are available and when elections will take place (this should be VERY soon, so do not hesitate!). Another way to lead while serving in Circle K is to run or apply for a position on the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan district board. This group of individuals is responsible for the general operations of the district and planning all district events that you attend each year. Teasha has highlighted the elected positions in this bulletin, and we will touch on the positions you an apply for next month. I must give a special shout out for my position, District Bulletin Editor, because it is a great way to express your creativity while promoting and service Circle K district. If you have any questions about the Bulletin Editor position (or any others), please do not hesitate to ask! Yours in Service, Marissa Blackmore
