The members were also applauded for the arrests of the illegal immigrants, who residents believe have been committing crimes in the area. Thembilishle Informal Settlement formed the second stage of the operation. Police engaged in the same process with patrols and stop and searches when necessary. There were 12 undocumented

persons arrested for not possessing a valid passport or permit. While the illegal immigrants themselves are being arrested, should they be found to be employed, the business manager or owner will be arrested and charged as well. The Immigrations Act 13 of 2002, section 38, states that no person shall employ an illegal foreigner, a foreigner whose status does not authorise him or her to be employed by such person or a foreigner on terms, conditions or in a capacity different

VER 20 undocumented persons living in the Mountain Rise policing area were apprehended on Friday, 30 May, during a successful integrated crime prevention operation. The operation, which lasted over 10 hours, saw immigration officers from the Department of Home Affairs, with other special forces from the police, and almost 100 law enforcement officials infiltrating the Mountain Rise Policing area. Immigration officers said that many of the foreigners come from Malawi. Often these people hide out in ships, on the shelf near the propellers or in the area where the anchor and chain is stored. The officers also said that theses people can survive two weeks with glucose powder and a bottle of water. The first stage of the operation took place in Site 11 informal settlement in Woodlands. Members of the police showed visibility and conducted stop and searches when necessary in order to root out any illegal immigrants. “The entire area was covered with police and immigration officers. Various houses in the informal settlements were identified. Police were able to apprehend 11 undocumented persons without a valid passport or permit to be in our country,” said Warrant Officer Joshua Maistry, corporate communications and youth desk coordinator. High police visibility continued

Child protection week

>> Protecting children from violence, exploitation and abuse is not only a basic value, but also a Constitutional obligation NICOLE JOHN

>>nicole@pmbfever.co.za

A

S South Africa celebrates the annual National Child Protection Week (CPW) from 1 to 8 June, Bevan Clayton put the children first when he hosted his sixth annual Hail Busters community event in Ghost Town on Saturday. CPW is commemorated to raise awareness of the rights of children. South African children live in a society with a Constitution that has the highest regard for their rights. Protecting children from violence, exploitation and abuse is not only a basic value, but also a Constitutional obligation. Clayton, togetherwithmembersof the Saps, held the event recently which highlights the importance of children and their right to a crimefree life.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Clayton said that the children are encouragedtowriteletterstohimand the police about their living conditions and family lives. He offers a gift for the winning letter. According to Clayton, these letters have been the tip off the police need to make certain arrests and root out crime. “Thisyearthewinningletterasked the police and the community to look after the children whose parents go out drinking and leave them alone at home to fend for themselves,” he said. Letters such as this one help the police identify certain issues that the children in the community are facing, ones that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. “Children innocently speak the truth. They have helped the police arrest many people for crimes which they noticed.”

Wear a green ribbon to show support for the promotion of the rights, care and pro tection of the child. The green refers to life and growth and lets victims and survi vors know that the country supports them. This method has been successful for many years now and the event is well supported by the residents of the community. Clayton praised the members of the police who are dedicated to his cause, especially Warrant Officer Shaun Knox, Lieutenant Colonel Brian Oberholzer, Brigadier Derek Captain-Hastibeer and Lieutenant Jack Haskins. Msunduzi investigating Regina Road protest NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

MSUNDUZI municipal mayor Chris Ndlela has called for a thorough investigation into last week’s protest in Ward 28 in the northern suburbs. Last week, parts of Northdale were in a state of anarchy when angryresidentsburnedtyresand used boulders to barricade

Regina Road next to Kharina Secondary School. The protest is said to have erupted after residents’ electricity was disconnected, despite claims that those residents had paid for it. Addressing a full council meetingrecently,Ndlelasaidthat the office of the speaker is facilitating a meeting between the delegation of the aggrieved

parties to unpack the grievances andtogivefinerdetailsastowhat had lead to that protest. “There are very serious allegations made by one of the councillors, which I am not in a position to unpack, because we want to hear the other side of the story. Some of the allegations are suggesting that there may be some involvement of some of us in misleading that particular

community which lead to the demonstrations. We want to get tothedeeprootofthecauseofthis protest because already, there are allegations leveled against the ruling party by one of the councillors. That councillor was not in a position to give us names but we will investigate. “If heads are to roll then we will lead that particular process,” said Ndlela.

Msunduzi approves R4.5 billion budget

>> From July, electricity will increase by 7.39%, water by 8.7% and sanitation and refuse by 5.6% NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

T

HE R4.5 billion Msunduzi Municipality budget for 2014/ 2015 was passed at a recent full council meeting at the City Hall. Addressing full council, Msunduzi mayor Chris Ndlela said that poverty, inequality and unemployment still affect the lives of many people. “We are facing the stark reality of children living and sleeping on the streets. Their daily challenges of being reduced to begging to make a living are the testimony of an unfinished job. Families who live in shacks with no running water, sanitation and electricity are a reminder that the past continues to haunt the present,” said Ndlela. Tariffs and service delivery Come the new financial year in July, electricity will increase by

7.39%, water by 8.7% and sanitation and refuse by 5.6%. “Affordability was taken into consideration for tariff and property rate increases. Tariffs need to remain or move towards being cost effective and take into account the need to address infrastructure backlogs,” said Ndlela. He stressed the importance of service delivery, saying that Msunduzi employees need to ‘shape up or ship out’. The municipality has put aside R60 million to address challenges of critical vacant posts “We are hoping that this will contribute immensely towards accelerating service delivery to those who need it most and need iturgently.Infillingtheseposts,we will not compromise on the issues of skill and capacity,” said Ndlela. Infrastructure Ndlelasaidthateachyear,R120 million is lost due to electricity

theft, illegal connections and technical losses caused by the ageing infrastructure. He said that cable theft and illegal connections are the biggest contributing factorstopoweroutagesinthecity. He said that the municipality will ensure that in the cold months ahead, electricity supply remains uninterrupted. Opposing the budget and IDP After holding a five-minute caucus following Ndlela’s budget speech, the Democratic Alliance (DA) councilors opposed the adoption of the budget and the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for 2014/ 2015. DA spokesperson on the finance portfolio, Dave Ryder, said that their major concern is that they have not seen the final documentation to satisfy themselves. “We have to make sure that we are absolutely happy with what we

might be approving. We are unable to support this budget and IDP on the basis that we haven’t had sufficient opportunity to thoroughly look at this documentation.” Ndlela said that the DA reserves all the rights to support or not to support any motion. “When we did a workshop on these documents, the DA was not represented. We need to understand that when we run government, new as I am in government, we are not here to make each other happy. Therefore the whole question of absolute happiness as raised by Ryder is neither here nor there. We will not be able to work if we are here to make each other happy. We should spell that out categorically,” said Ndlela. Ryder’s motion of not accepting the budget received 11 votes against39voteswhichwereforthe adoption of the budget and IDP.

The way forward after 2014 elections WITH the euphoria and adrenaline rush of the voting behind South Africans, the moment of reckoning has dawned upon political parties to evaluate their policies in the context of their performance in this election. The ANC’s majority is continually declining. They slipped from 70% (2004) to 66% (2009) to 63% in 2014. The DA share of votes increased from 16% in the last election to 22%. The Economic Freedom fighters, with Julius Malema as the commander-in-chief, has done exceptionally well, offering something different but appealing especially to the young disillusioned voters who are unemployed and the landless wanting homes. The challenge now lies in delivery of these promises. Parliament is no longer going to be a place where ministers fall off to sleep. The EFF has probably given new life to the multi-party concept by bringing discontented voices into parliament and the provincial legislature. They carry the hopes and aspirations of approximately 1.2 million voters who have endorsed their election manifesto or parts thereof.

Their emergence on the reconfigured political landscape is going to herald exciting times ahead. The Nkandla debacle was not an issue for the electorate in many provinces where the ANC secured an overwhelming majority. In Gauteng, it may have swung the voters towards the DA. The E-Tolling system has also caused major discontent and added expenses fortheresidentsofGauteng, resultingindeclining votes for the ANC. Trying times are looming on the horizon as theANCchartersaplantoaddresstheinequalities facing our nation. This can be achieved if corruption is eliminated from the system and the relevant personnel, with requisite skills, are placed in key areas such as finance. In the last financial year, the auditor general stated that R170 billion was lost through corruption and unauthorised expenditure. If the ANC is serious about eliminating theft of taxpayers money in any form what so ever, theyneedtointroducelegislationthatwill“fire” civil servants if caught stealing. VIJAY SURUJPAL Via email

Mall parking issues

W

ITH regards to the article “Customers slowly embrace paid parking” in the Maritzburg Fever on 30 April, I have to make my point about changes that have been made with the underground parking area. A large area has been fenced off with palisade fencing. On inquiring with the workers, I was told that this area is for the tenants parking - close to the entrance. My objection to this area being used for tenants parking is that it is so close to the lifts and escalators, and now the shoppers have to park further away. Surely the tenants parking should have been placed at the far end as they are parked for most of the day? Are the shoppers not important to the mall? What about elderly people?

They now have to walk even longer distances to their parking? Your article states that dedicated tenants parking facility frees up additional parking for shoppers. This I find hard to believe with what I have seen. Tenants parking is a large area. Large shopping malls in Gauteng put the tenants parking away from the shoppers, and do not inconvenience the shoppers by making them park further from the lifts and escalators. Hopefully other shoppers will agree with me,and perhaps mall management will have a rethink on this point. ANN GRAY Howick

Umi Khan, Liberty Midlands Mall centre manager responds: Please be assured that Liberty Midlands Mall’s centre management considers the convenience of our shoppers very seriously and we always seek suggestions that can improve our current offering. Currently, the area that the tenant bays occupy is only a small percentage of the overall parking available at Liberty Midlands Mall. The tenant parking area was designed so as not to interfere with public entry into the Mall and allows easy access for shoppers to all entrances underground, including the elevators and lifts situated near the north, west and south entrances.

Tenants can opt, at a cost, for a prereserved leased parking area in the basement, an option which has always been available to tenants. However, previously, the parking bays were reserved only by a ‘reserved sign’ and it came to our attention that shoppers were occupying these bays. Assuch, theMalldecidedtocordonoffthesame designated area, which is now only more visible to shoppers and should not impose on their shopping experience at all.

THE de Kock sisters, Amelia (11) and Talita (8), have raised over R1 000 by making rhino bracelets and will be donating the money to the Save the Rhino fund. “We started with the fundraising becauseweloveanimalsandwewant our children to get the opportunity to see the rhinos too,” said their mother, Liezel de Kock. The girls started in November last year and have sold their bracelets to family, friends, at their school and

anywhere they can. They are also based at the Dunrobin Market at the end of each month and Lindsay’s in Hilton. The bracelets sell at R10 a piece and come in a variety of sizes and colours. The full amount is donated to the rhino fund. De Kock said that her youngest daughter looks up to Ian Player, who is well known as an initiator and team leader of an innovative project Operation Rhino. “Ian Player also supported us and sent us a letter. Karou Charou is MahaDhir

THE enigmatic and charismatic Karou Charou returnstoPMBwithhisbandnewnationaltour show, aptly titled Maha-Dhir. “Maha” is Sanskrit for mighty/powerful whilst “Dhir” refers to a wise man. His blockbuster new show sees the “mighty” and “wise” one return to the form that propelled him to become the most commercially successful Indian comedian on the circuit. He is brash, brazen and unapologetic, which allows him to get away with just about anything on stage. The ‘turbaned one’ is not afraid to push the boundaries and accordingly, anyone and everything is fair game. His trademark “f” bombs drop quick and fastfromhislipsashebouncesonandoffstage, delivering a high octane, high energy, in your face routine that is nothing short of a comedy riot. Accordingly, the show is rated PG-18L, and Karou warns sensitive people with no pulse to stay at home. Always adding a new dimension to his shows, Karou has been hard at work studying hypnosis and he is going to use his new found skills to help people kick bad habits such as smoking and biting their nails. Music, song, dance, magic, hypnosis - and a bit of comedy. Its almost like a Bollywood movie - just a few hours shorter and without subtitles. Catch Maha-Dhir (PG-18) at the Aryan Hall in Khan Road on Friday, 13 June. Tickets are R120 at Computicket/Shoprite/Checkers. Limited early bird tickets at R100 can be bought from the Pharmacy at Spar (Northway Mall). The winners of The Maritzburg Fever Karou Charou double ticket giveaway were: Saruna Dhanilal, Yashika Sukhaye, Lavern Francis, Ashley Anthony, Carol Hyde, Jessica Kenneth, Daphne Kimmy Subbiah, Jeremy Martin Paul and Vilosh Kanniappen.

Kerooshan Pather established KIT Productions to help the youth spend their spare time constructively.

EEPING children occupied and entertained with good, clean fun is the dream that Kerooshan Pather (20) had when he began his organization, KIT Productions, in February this year. Pather, a part-time deejay, is currently studying travel and tourism at Damelin College, and runs the organizationonaSaturdayafternoon from his home in Lahore Road, Northdale. His main goal is to get the youth off the streets and encourage them to occupy their free time doing something productive, rather than get involved in social ills. “My aim is to get them to do something productive with their time because, as youth, we are the future. There are so many children getting involved in drugs and alcohol which sometimes results in them losing

their lives, either in accidents or by committing suicide,” said Pather. Children between the ages of 15 and 20 are encouraged to join KIT Productions at no cost. HE Super Traders 2.0 team at Maritzburg College have won the Equity Growth category in the April leg of the JSE Investment Challenge. The school has been participating in this challenge for about 10 years and the boys have consistently

performed well and are placed in the top five nationally. Last year, team Super Traders placed third overall, won two other prizes and were awarded R11 200. Economics teacher Jean van Heeswijk is very proud of her boys. “The subject of economics is an interesting one and a popular subject choice of the boys here. Part of their work involves the study of markets,

Each team starts the competition with a virtual R1 million and tries to make this sum grow by investing it on the equity

market. The April leg of the competition ran from 10 April to 9 May and during this period, the All Share Index climbed by just over one percent. Super Traders 2.0 posted a return of 9.5% during the same period. The monthly winners win R500 per team member, R500 for their teacher and R500 for their school. “We are once again extremely

proud of our young investors who consistently perform well in this annual competition. We wish them well as they continue in the competition and are sure that they will continue to perform well,” said Ingo Talke, deputy headmaster. The competition ends on 26 September and winners will be announced in October 2014 after auditing takes place.

Ashdown Primary School boys give the thumbs up to the Rugby Cubs Initiative piloted by Cordwalles Preparatory School. Cordwalles coaches (back, from left), Rory Bremner Andre Greyvenstein and Bayanda Mbambo are accompanied by Ashdown's Zanele Ngcobo.

JONATHAN COOK

“T

HEoriginalRugbyCubs startedatCordwallesin 2012. Head of sport Lance Veenstra approached me at the end of 2011 and asked if I would be interested in starting an initiativewherebywewouldintroduce the Grade one’s and two’s at Cordwalles to rugby as a whole and develop their basic skills so that when they started formal rugby in Grade three, they would already be familiar with the concept of rugby. “Through Cordwalles’ already strong outreach link with Ashdown School, it seemed a natural progression to get involved with them and see if we could not help expose some of the boys at Ashdown to rugby.” These are the heart-warming words of Cordwalles teacher and coach Rory Bremner, the former Maritzburg College and PMB Varsity first XV scrumhalf. The Rugby Cubs initiative is part of Cordies’ (as the school is fondly known) outreach relationship with Ashdown Primary, which is in operation on many levels - academic, cultural and other. There is a Hobbies Programme at Cordwalles on Friday afternoons where all the boys from Grade four to seven participate

“The Cordwalles school bus fetches the boys at 1.30pm. When they arrive at Cordies, they go into a brief warm-up and then we put them through various speed and agility drills as well as basic handling, tackling and rucking drills.” Ashdown’s super-keen youngsters absorb it like a sponge and have quality mentors in Rugby Cubs head coach, Andre’ Greyvenstein (the former Maritzburg College first team skipper and current UKZN Impi captain and eighthman) who is assisted by super-enthusiastic Maritzburg College Old Boy Bayanda Mbambo - a PMB Varsity student who was born for teaching kids - and who alsohelpswiththelanguagebarrier for some of the boys. Once training is done, the boys are transported back to Ashdown in the Cordies bus. “Our main outcome that we hope to achieve is the opportunity to expose young boys to the wonderful game of rugby when ordinarily, they probably would have never had the chance to experience it,” said recently qualified teacher Bremner. “Itisafun, safeenvironmentfor them and something different from their normal daily routine and at a young age we are able to identify those with potential and help to develop them further.”

TECH TALK

WEARABLE devices are rapidly becoming a hot topic in the technology industry. Starting with the Google Glass project, which is now in the open beta stage, taking the industry by storm. The idea appeals to a multitude of gamers, geeks and gadget lovers, and has also had a strong corporate response. Samsung took another step forward some time ago with their GEAR watches, which could act as a second screen for your Samsung phone by displaying incoming calls, messages and notifications. Although the GEAR watch had a rocky start due to some unforeseen compatibility issues, it has become an almost essential tool for overly active users. Recently, Samsung also announced that they are working on a project to rival Google Glass. Samsung has been making ginormous strides in the hardware market, and I am personally looking forward to seeing their new projects. With that said, it would be a shame if Samsung and Google took all of the spotlight. Microsoft and Apple feel the same and have also started on a few interesting hardware projects. Apple is poised to announce their first iWatch later this year, whilst Microsoft have secretly been working on their own fitness based smart watch since 2012. The Microsoft Watch will be able to tie in with Android, Apple and Microsoft phones, giving them a massive compatibility boost over the other players. It’s going to be an interesting year in terms of hardware, and we’re so excited!

S

OUTH Africa’s most beautiful road race, the SPAR Women’s 10/5km, will once again entice thousands of capital runners out onto the roads on Sunday, 22 June in Pietermaritzburg. The start and finish of this year’s race will be in The Alexandra Park Oval Cricket Grounds precinct. The route takes runners through the picturesque setting of Alexandra Park and promises to attract over 4000 participants. The route for the 2014 edition remainsthesameaftercomplimentary reports from the top runners who competed last year. “Jenna Challenor, who blitzed her way through the race, only had complimentary things to say about the route so we have decided not to change it. We know that there will be patches of congestion but this is bound to happen when you gather thousands of people together at one time!” race director Brad Glasspoole commented. The defending champion Challenor expects to be back to defend her title having had an amazing start to the year.Thehardworkingmotherofthree took a year off to have a baby, but is making a big impact not only on the local scene but on the international circuit, having run a pacey Maritzburg race last year with her accolades growing from there. Although the Pietermaritzburg event is not part of the SPAR Grand Prix, top athletes such as barefoot runner,Diana-LeoPhalulashouldbeat the starting line along with Challenor. The event is the second biggest annual road running event to take place in the city aside from the Comrades Marathon. The race has been moved forward from September to June which means a cooler start. According to Glasspoole, this is due to the Top Gear Festival taking place on the weekend that was proposed for the Durban leg of the SPAR Women’s 10/5km Race, so the race dates of the Pietermaritzburg and Durban races have been swopped around. Cerebral Palsy Association golf day THE Pietermaritzburg and Districts Cerebral Palsy Association were financially struggling in November 2013. Thanks largely to local philanthropy, the organisation is still providing school preparation and therapeutic interventions for 25

children with Cerebral Palsy. Last year, the R25 000 made from the October Golf day was instrumental in keeping their doors open and their spirits up. This year, the association are hoping that even more golfers will take up their clubs so they can keep

getting the help they need. Book now to play or sponsor a hole at the Cerebral Palsy Golf Day 4-Ball on 12 June at the Victoria Country Club. For more information, please contact Sandi at 076 629 7467 or e-mail cpafinance@futurenet.co.za. - Supplied
