Addressing teenage pregnancy >> The high teenage pregnancy rate indicates that the youth are not practising safe sex

S
TATISTICS indicate that the number of deliveries by teenagers at government hospitals in the Msunduzi Municipality was 1 380 at the end of 2014. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, director at LifeLine Crisis Centre, Sinikiwe Biyela, said that the high teenage pregnancy rate shows that the youth are not practising safe sex. “When LifeLine counsellors visit schools and speak to pupils we often find it is not the lack of knowledge of the importance of using condoms and being aware of sexually transmitted
diseases - they are curious and want to follow the crowd. It’s not easy to fight off peer pressure at that age so when you get children who have low self-esteem they look for acceptance among their peers.” Biyela said that issues such as these should to be addressed by parents who need to play an active role when their children are young. “Peer pressure starts to set in when the child is reaching the end of primary school so issues of sexuality and sexual reproductive health need to be addressed at that stage.” LifeLine’s programme, Families Matter, was developed to train parents how to deal with issues of

sexuality with their preadolescent children that some find difficult to address. “We have identified the preadolescent group as the target because after years of trying to intervene in high schools and teach teenagers about safe sex, it’s time to try something new. “This means that by the time they reach high school they are emotionally ready to deal with the peer pressure and curiosity they will encounter,” said Biyela. Speaking about the statistics, Biyela said it seems to be a pandemic across all races groups and affects rural and urban households.
The online teenage support group that LifeLine has formed focuses both on the mother and the father as well as their parents. “Weeducatethem[mothers]about the changes they are going through and help form a dialogue between them and counsellors, but to also to talk to each other about being pregnant as teenagers because they need that support and a platform to express what they are going through emotionally,” said Biyela. She said often people only focus on the teenage mother, and the father is forgotten. “They too need to be educated about the repercussions so they do
not go out and do it to another girl.” The support group has been running for one year and has gone from strength to strength. “The problem is bigger than what we see on paper. The first step is to change the mindset of young people and also change adult mindsets, this includes parents, nursing staff and the community. “We need to change our attitude without judging because methods of the past have not worked,” said Biyela. Bartering litter for bicycles
Importance of pet vaccinations >> Parvovirus is one of the worst viruses dogs can contract NICOLE JOHN

Wastepreneur, Sululeni Mkhize (70), received three bicycles from Wildlands Conservation Trust recently. Mkhize had to collect hundreds of Pet bottles (cool-drink bottles) to earn these bicycles. ‘I see a difference in the community since I joined this project, it used to be very dirty, it is much cleaner now. I will give these bicycles to my grandchildren. They are here to collect them and ride them home, and are so excited.’ This project was developed through a partnership between Wildlands, Qhubeka, Coca-Cola and the Gary Player Invitational. With their bikes (from left) Thabisa Msane, Sphamandla Msane and Mlungisi Msane with their grandmother Sululeni Mkhize.
HERE has been a significant increase in the number of cases of Parvovirus infection the Hayfields Veterinary Hospital has dealt with since December. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Doctor Derek Clover said the infection is one of the worst viruses dogs can contract. “Often you hear people talking about rabies and other common viruses but Parvo, which is just as common but is more serious, is one that not many people know about.” Clover explained that Parvo is one
of the strongest and longest lasting viruses and can live up to six months outside the body. “The only thing that will kill off the virus is to clean the area with diluted bleach,” he said. Virusparticlescanbetransferredin the air, stool or vomit. It can also be transferred by humans if they step in the infected stool or vomit. Clover said the best preventative method is for dog owners to ensure they take their dogs for all their vaccinations. “Often pet owners remember to take their puppies for the six and nineweek vaccinations, but slip up when it comes to 12 weeks, and this is the most
important vaccination to protect them from many infections, especially Parvo.” When dogs contract Parvo they are put on a drip to ease the pain and manage the other symptoms which include vomiting and diarrhoea. “The survival rate varies however, dogs are put on treatment for five days. If they do not respond during that time they have to be put to sleep because it will be inhumane to let them live and suffer,” said Clover. Parvo is preventable if owners ensure their dogs are taken for all their vaccinations. For more information about the infection contact your nearest vet.

Metered taxi operators join city tourism ambassadors NQOBILE MTOLO
>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za THE Pietermaritzburg metered taxi is an important sector in marketing and selling the city to tourists and potential investors. This was one of the highlights during the recent City Tourism Ambassador’s Programme meeting between the meter taxi representatives and the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association (MPTA). MPTA began the City Tourism Ambassadors’ Programme two years ago with an aim of creating proudly Pietermaritzburg citizens who can confidently sell Pietermaritzburg, the City of Choice, in order to increase the influx of

visitors. The programme has also been joined by the Greater Pietermaritzburg Midlands Region Metered Taxi Association (GPMRMTA). Participants in this programme are only legal meter taxi operators, who are properly registered with the municipality and are m embers of the association. To effectively and efficiently sell the city, the programme covers important tourism elements, including customer service and communication, tourists’ safety, the needs of tourists, overview of the tourism industry and background knowledge on the city of Pietermaritzburg. “We wanted to create a proud Pietermaritzburg resident who can sell our city as a tourist destination. If the people in the taxi industry do not know our city that means they will not be able to take tourists to places they need to visit. That becomes a problem. The taxi industry is an important part of tourism,” said MPTA director Dumisani Mhlongo. On issues of tourists’ safety, Mhlongo added it is important that tourists are alerted about crime hot spots without setting off alarms. “Tourists need information on how they should look after their belongings and need to be provided with emergency numbers. People are the reason the taxi industry exists,” said Mhlongo.

Xenophobic attacks FEVER 3 impede business and tourism maritzburg

HE xenophobic attacks that hit Pietermaritzburg are likely to have a negative impact on business and tourism sectors. The Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB) CEO Melanie Veness said they have been liaising closely with the Msunduzi Municipality city manager’s office and Safe City team to keep abreast of what is happening on the ground. Veness said that PCB has not had any direct complaints from local businesses however, a number of foreign-owned business owners were afraid and closed their shops out of fear. She said currently no report on boycotted local goods has been reported to her office. “Myunderstandingisthatthere was some disruption due to isolated incidents of opportunistic looting. Any attack on a foreigner as a result of his ethnicity is unconscionable and utterly deplorable.
These actions erode civic pride and confidence in our country and I have no doubt that the economic impact of this criminal behaviour will be felt by all of us in some way. The tit-for-tat consequences are likely to be felt by local businesses with interests in Africa, which will negatively impact the economy,” she said. Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association (MPTA) director Dumisani Mhlongo said the attacks on foreign nationals affect domestic and regional tourism. “The attacks also have a negative impact on South Africans who travel to African countries as they have to think twice before beginning their travels. If these movements are restricted it impedes the tourism sector,” said Mhlongo. Mhlongo said that MPTA is contemplating starting a social media strategy against the attacks on foreign nationals. “We are also planning a meeting with the accommodation segment and one of the issues on the agenda will be

THE multimillion-rand budget hotel development in the Hayfields area is back on track. City Lodge Hotel Group has taken over the development of the hotel, to be located at the corner of New England Road and Hesketh Drive. The development was initially proposed as an apartment complex and a Formula One Hotel by developers, Dezzo Holdings. Construction has since ground to a halt and Hayfields residents have complained that the site had turned into a neglected, overgrown eyesore. City Lodge Group told executive committee members in the Msunduzi Council that construction has resumed. The transfer took place in October and developerswentouttotenderandconstruction began. The hotel is scheduled to open in November and will employ 15 people, joining the City Lodge chain of hotels in South Africa, Nairobi, Kenya and Botswana. “Construction commenced in March, and is now well under way on the hotel site with contractors established on site and the platforms being levelled. “Site offices have been established and there is activity visible daily,” said a council report. ILDLANDS Conservation Trust is appealing to Pietermaritzburg schools to get involved in its latest Clothes for Life project and collect clothes which can be bartered allowing those in underprivileged communities to earn a living. “There are many women in our communities who do not work because they cannot find a job or they cannot leave their home because of many socio-economic reasons. There is also a very real need for good-quality clothing in our underprivileged communities,” said Bronwen Bainbridge, Wildlands Partnerships manager. Wildlands has an existing base of about 10 000 “green-preneurs” who generate support for themselves through the barter of trees and waste for building materials, small business grants, bicycles and educational support. “Bartering clothing allows these green-preneurs to generate cash from the bundles of clothing they are bartering trees and waste for. They can also clothe themselves and their families by growing trees for Wildlands and collecting waste in their communities.”

Blood bank ‘is its own worst enemy’ IN days of yore, blood donors were offered, as an inducement to come forward, free blood should they ever need it. I believe this has now been stopped and donors must pay the full price. Donating blood is, for me at least, a very intimidating experience. Every pint remains difficult. I have fainted many times, despite having given about 40 units of blood, but I continue to donate, often I ask myself why. Once I passed out for 20 minutes and was told not to return. Frankly, I’m not surprised the South African National Blood Service is always running low - having stopped the one small inducement to come forward, free blood. I’m not surprised many others have stopped donating as it’s not a pleasant experience. With many folk now unable to afford medical aid, I suspect many donors would return if they were again to get free blood in a time of crisis. I don’t buy that it amounts to payment for people’s blood. The blood service has one other serious flaw - it seems unable to set up a database, sending donors e-mails about this and that, and in particular when its mobile clinics will be going to Hilton, for example. It is its own worst enemy. Fortunately, at a technical level, it seems better than it was 20-plus years ago. BARRIE LEWIS Hilton

IP-HOP artist, writer and event organiser Brian Khoza, known in the entertainment industry as BriandotKhoza, is ecstatic to have won at the 2014 South African Hip Hop Awards. The South African Hip Hop Awards were held in December, but Khoza was only able to
get his award recently. He had previously been nominated twice, but always left empty handed, but his third nomination last year ended on a positive not as he won the King of Hip-hop award. “Honestly, I did not expect to win. However,Iamhumbledbythe achievement. Last year when I was nominated for the third time I had done a lot to promote hip-hop in Pietermaritzburg. This award is for the people who do a lot of work to promote hip-hop behind the scenes. To qualify, the judges

looked at my portfolio and what I have achieved thus far. “From publishing books, staging hip-hop and rap events, conducting public speaking at schools to releasing my hip-hop albums, what I do is all related to the hip-hop music industry.” Khoza said it would be delightful to win again this year. “Winningtheawardmeansthat all my formulas are working towards putting the city of Pietermaritzburg on the map without relocating to big cities.”
Being successful has its own dilemmas because winning the hip-hop award created a lot of haters. “There has been a lot of hatred on social media as some people have never heard of me before. Other people request to be my friendonFacebook, butonceIhave accepted their request they send me hate messages. At times I laugh it off, but truly speaking, haters are a symbol that you are doing something great with your life. I just love the journey,” said Khoza.

Athlone Primary received two outstanding awards from the KZN Department of Education for the 2014 Annual National Assessment. It was the best school in the Umgungundlovu District which covers all schools in Pietermaritzburg from Mooi River to Hammersdale. The school received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Language in the Intermediate Phase. With their awards are principal Gerrit Coetzee (middle) and his two HODs - Kasturi Moodley (left, JP HOD) and Zelda Schonken (SP HOD).

ETER Pan Special School, under its outreach programme Sibahle Sonke, visited Stepping Stones pupils from the PietermaritzburgCerebralPalsyAssociationto celebrate Easter. Sibahle Sonke organised the Easter event so thatPeterPanpupilscouldengageincommunity activities. Fifteen pupils from Sibahle Sonke assisted younger pupils at Stepping Stones to eat their lunch and colour in Easter cards for friends and family. At the end of the day Sibahle Sonke handed out cake and Easter eggs to staff and pupils at Stepping Stones. “We started the community outreach programme in 2011 and the programmes have been progressing successfully. We want our children to be actively involved with the community. Doing the outreach programme
teaches children that they can make a difference in their communities. We want to outline to the community that children living with a disability can do something,” said Phumelele Khumalo, housekeeping supervisor, facilitator and co-ordinator for Sibahle Sonke. Khumalo said they have visited various schools for its community outreach programmes. “Since 2011 Sibahle Sonke has raised funds to buy Christmas gifts for other children. We have managed to do this by selling hot dogs and Sibahle Sonke T-shirts. Every person is beautiful in their own way and there is no room for discrimination,” she said. “We want to raise awareness and teach the community to treat people living with disabilities with respect. We are also planning on visiting animal shelters to encourage love for animals,” said Khumalo. She thanked everyone who was involved in the planning and execution of the Easter outreach programme, including sponsors.
‘Smashing’ fun day at school Laddsworth Primary pupils had great fun in the sun when the entrepreneurial Grade 7s set up a variety of games and stalls for the school to enjoy. Activities included a jumping castle, a foaming water slide, pony rides, games and the popular Zorb ball, which competed only with smashing a wrecked car in drawing the longest queues. Sam Moore (left) oversees that the car smashing activity is safely undertaken with Duncan King and Emily Cramer wearing helmets and eye protection. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

THIS ONE DAY SPECIAL PRAYER FIXED MY MARRIAGE & FINANCIAL PROBLEMS
6 Years ago my life was a mess. My husband had left me and my children were always sick. Luckily I saw a testimony on the local TV station about prayers offered by Professor Osmon. When they prayed for a divorced lady who united with her husband after 9 years of divorce and he was also saved from drugs. I paid R200 for consultation with Osmon. They used the mirror and showed me faces of the people who were trying to pull me down. I was given powerful love crystals, Indian ash plus a special ring to fix my financial problems, within 3 days my husband returned, now I am happily married, I was promoted at work, I recommend him to anyone who has anyone who has marriage, financial problems and unfinished jobs. Do you want to give birth and feeling helpless, heart broken & financially miserable Contact Number: 073 981 2429 Pietermaritzburg up town

Women want midlife-crisis cars too IT turns out women are also susceptible to buying midlife-crisis cars, at least according to a survey by Ipsos. It’s a common theory that when a man reaches middle age he will rush to buy the new car he’s had his eyes on years. A survey by global research specialist Ipsos claims to show that women want midlife-crisis cars too. The survey revealed that, on average, one in four respondents were likely to buy a midlife-crisis car – 30% of men and 21% of women. The sexes differed, however,
on the type of vehicle they were likely to buy - top pick among men was a sports car (24%), among women an SUV (19%). You might think of a red sports car as the classic midlife car but according to the survey 20% said that they would choose a black vehicle; 19% opted for silver or grey. Blue and red were tied on 17%, yellow was dead last with two percent of the vote. The Ipsos survey also showed 29% of men were “feel good” about middle age but only 22% of women. Overall, respondents felt
positive about later life, saying it was “a time for fresh opportunities and experiences”. Robyn Farrell, 1st for Women Insurance executive head, said: “Reaching middle age should be atimeofcelebration–you’reolder but wiser and better equipped to deal with all that life throws at you. “This is reflected in your insurance premium, too, as once you hitthebigfive-ohyoucanusually benefit from lower premiums because you’re viewed as a more responsible driver due to the amount of driving experience you have.” - Wheels4Women.

HREE Pietermaritzburg pupils, who will be representing Pietermaritzburg and South Africa during the upcoming U19 Schools Squash Tour to Malaysia, are appealing for donations for the trip. Each player - Noel Lee, Anele NgubaneandAnaChemaly-willneed R28 000. Noel and Anele are at Epworth School and Ana is at St Anne’s Diocesan College. Noel and Ana are in Grade 11, Anele is in Grade 12.
They are expected to leave for Malaysia on 27 May and return on 10 June. “We will be playing a series of Test matches against teams from Hong Kong, Malaysia and Australia as well as competing in the Penang International Junior Championships from 1 to 6 June. We will also have coaching at an international coaching centre in Malaysia,” said Noel. She said she loves squash because it is an individual sport. “The result of a match depends on me alone and how I play. Squash demands high levels of physical and mental fitness and self-discipline.
Training with the Epworth squad and our coaches is great fun and the Maritzburg squash community is very supportive. I have grown a lot as a person through squash.” Noel and Anele started playing squash in Grade 6. “I started squash towards end of Grade 6 at The Grange Primary. “If I’m aiming to do well I will not need to depend on other people in the team. Squash has helped me grow as a person and has helped me to understand that self-motivation and belief are the most important things,” said Anele. Ana said she loves squash because
