INDU residents of PMB are up in arms after months of waiting for lavatory and washroom facilities at the Mountain Rise crematorium to be improved. Since the middle of last year, the crematorium has been left without proper lavatory facilities after a municipality-appointed contractor demolishedtheinteriorintheprocess of renovating the site. To date, the renovation has not been completed. What is left is a shell of a building with bags of hardened cement sitting unused in what used to be the toilets. Grass and weeds have sprouted through the concrete floors of its exterior, and water has seeped through the broken or non-existent ceilings, causing damage to the walls. After months of waiting, members of Pietermaritzburg’s Hindu community have raised their concerns with the Msunduzi Municipality, and now hope the projectwillbecompletedaspromised at the end of April. One resident, Rajen Naidoo, who attended a funeral there last year, described the situation as “outrageous”. “When you attend a funeral after a long journey, there are no ablution facilities available, which makes things very difficult if you’re from out of town.
“We [Hindus] are the main group of people who use the crematorium and it is sad to see that the issue is being neglected,” he said. Naidoo also alleged that the cremation burners are in fact incineratorsusedtodisposeofanimal carcasses. Another resident, who wished not to be named, said it was a “great disappointment” that the situation had persisted for so long. “In our religion [Hinduism], it is customary to wash yourself after funeral rituals. “Is this not a violation of our religious rights? “Why has this not been made a priority and been left for so long?” the man asked. Ashwin Trikamjee, head of the South African Hindu Maha Sabah, said their organisation would make a representation to provincial authorities if the problem was not resolved urgently. “It is unbelievable and unacceptable that basic facilities are unavailable at such an important venue. Immediately after a cremation, it is obligatory to cleanse yourself with water,” Trikamjee said. Municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said they had experienced problems with the contractor appointed to do the upgrades and now need to “follow due process”. “In terms of compliance with the

MOTORISTS owe the Msunduzi Municipality a staggering R70 million in unpaid traffic fines. Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said that the number is steadily increasing. When the Maritzburg Fever asked Madonda what action the municipality is taking to recover this amount she said they rely on the overthecounter payment of fines, saying there is not enough manpower in the traffic department to deal with the demand. “Like other similar institutions, the demand exceeds the supply.” She said that the municipality plans to collect R15 million from drivers before the end of the 2014/2015 financial year. On whether the 50% amnesty will be implemented, she said that decision remains the prerogative of council. The money collected for traffic fines is used to address service delivery needs, but the municipali ty is dependent on this money to execute its operations. “The municipality is not dependent solely on traffic fines to function. Motorists are urged to continue paying their traffic fines,” said Madonda. She urged drivers with outstanding traffic fines to pay at 21 Washington Road, at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on the corner of Otto and Church streets and on the first floor of the Pelham Tea Room.

The item has been part of Exco’s outstanding mattersformonthsandthemanagerattheSpeaker’s office, Blessing Dlamini, who was responsible for compiling the report, had previously suggested to Exco that McArthur avail himself to the meeting so that he could respond to this matter. McArthur cited not receiving response from municipal officials on service deliveryrelated matters affecting his ward as the main reason for not holding public meetings during the tabled period. He said that according to his understanding the Speaker, Babu Baijoo, is the one responsible for calling councillors to order for not holding meetings. “I have not been called by the Speaker to explain why the meetings were not held. There are other councillors from other political parties who have not held public meetings. I have had public meetings in my ward in the past six months. I am a parttime

Mayor Chris Ndlela said that he was not sure if McArthur’s recent staging of public meetings falls within January to September 2014. “We are not getting closer to what we want and why the public meetings did not sit,” said Ndlela. Councillor Thulani Xulu said that not holding public meetings forces people to engage in boycotts. Exco member Jabu Ngubo said that oneonone communication should never replace public meetings. “That is never going to be enough. Ndlela suggested that Baijoo and McArthur be invited to sit in the next Exco meeting so that answers can be sourced. McArthur seconded Ndlela’s motion by nodding his head.

City to take over and expand Oribi Airport THAMSANQA MAGUBANE THE Msunduzi Municipality plans to take over the running of Pietermaritzburg (Oribi) airport next year. The airport’s contract with Indiza Airport management ends in March next year. provider. Judge Rishi Seegobin set aside a decision taken by the municipality not to award the contract to Indiza Airport Management. He accused the municipality of dishonesty. Judge Seegobin found that the awarding had been flawed. He ordered the municipality to award the tender to the company within a month and to pay all Indiza’s costs. Nkosi said the municipality will not put out another tender, but will set up its own entity. The entity, he said, will bring a variety of expertise to operations, including a board of directors. “The manager will be appointed now and when the contract with Indiza expires, the manager will continue running the airport,” he said. Nkosi said that the municipality had big plans for the airport. “The airport must be alive, it must not be what it is now where people just come and go.” Dr Ray Ngcobo, responsible for Economic Development in the municipality, said they plan to build an airport hub that will accommodate many businesses in aviation. He said the project has been sponsored by provincial treasury.

F all goes well, regular, legal drag racing could be taking place at Mason’s Mill. The Msunduzi Municipality has moved a step closer to legalising drag racing by identifying a site where the motorsport could take place legally. The old bus depot near Mason’s Mill, Edendale, has been identified as a temporary site. A proposal for the drag racing venue is likely to be tabled before executive committee members for approval this Thursday. Michael Chetty, a member of Illegal to Legal - the racing
organisation that put forward the proposal - said they have been trying to get council approval for the past 13 years. Dr Ray Ngcobo of Msunduzi Economic Development Services said they have decided to regulate the sport. “The sport is quite popular in many parts of the city, especially in the northern suburbs. It is happening in areas not zoned for it.Itisnotregulatedandwefeltthat it needs to be regulated.” An applicant, Ngcobo said, had put a proposal forward to use the site. “If the agenda allows, the municipal manager will table the proposal this Thursday. The site
will be temporary as the municipality searches for a permanent area for drag racing in the city. “The applicant will lease the site and there will be conditions imposed.” He said the applicants will be responsible for all activities associated with the event. This includes putting all security and crowd control measures in place. Ngcobo said the municipality is not looking to make money off the sport. “This is part of our investment in sport and recreation.” In January last year during a meeting with ANC leaders, an estimated 3 500 motor sport enthusiasts gathered at the

Nedbank centre in Raisethorpe. They appealed for a drag strip for the city. Msunduzi Municipality Speaker Babu Baijoo said the ANC leadership had honoured promises it made to the people. Chetty said once the site is approved, several millions of rands will be invested in it to make it suitable. He said the racing is likelytotakeplaceonSaturdayand Sunday afternoons. “The people who are part of the sport will have to pay [for using the site] …Once it is working, it will curb illegal street racing. “The law will come down hard onthosestillracingonpublicroads when there is an area for it,” he said. Racer and organiser Enver Kikia said: “There is a shortage of racing areas in Pietermaritzburg and that is why many kids engage in illegal racing. “The Mason’s Mill site is perfect. It will need a bit of work.” Hesaidenthusiastswillstillfind it even more appealing when it is legalised. “That the sport is currently illegal does not make it more exciting, it makes it more dangerous.” A racing enthusiast who asked to remain unnamed said legalising the sport was a good idea. “I think it would be better to have a legal and controlled strip because when cars pass us at 200 km/h it is scary, especially if you’re parked just one metre away. But it’s all in the fun and thrill of it, that’s why I still go,” he said.

One in 10 women suffer with endometriosis
18 March 2015
maritzburg
FEVER
MARCH is internationally known as Endometriosis Awareness Month. In endometriosis, tissue that looks and acts like endometrial tissue is found outside the uterus, usually inside the abdominal cavity. This misplaced tissue acts like it would if it was inside the uterus. More oestrogen is produced than progesterone, resulting in hormonal imbalances too. Over time, scarring or adhesions inside the repro-
ductive organs, pelvis, and intestines can appear. Some of the common symptoms are painful and heavy menstruationcycles, chronicpelvicpain and reduced fertility. Therearefourstagesofthis disease, ranging from minor to major severity - subtle, typical, cystic ovarian and deep. It affects an estimated one in 10 women during their reproductive years (usually between the age of 15 and 49), which is about 176 million women in the world.
Unfortunately, no cure has yet been found, but the side effects can be controlled with surgery, medication, menopause and proper diet. If anyone suffers from similar symptoms, please don’t ignore them or take any risks. Visit a gynaecologist and seek professional help as soon as possible. Women are gems and their health and well-being is valuable in their busy lives. SADIYYA KHAN Richmond
Amazing service from Grey’s I’M writing this letter to thank all the amazing people at Grey’s Hospital. On March 8, our baby boy Levi, who is 20 months old, was rushed there after being knocked over by a car. We were seen to straight away by a team of helpful, friendly and concerned doctors and nurses. They were nothing but professional, caring and understanding, both to the
hysterical mother and the crying baby. We have never before received such exceptional help and service at a hospital. We also want to express our gratitude to Mark Winterboer and his professional team from Berg Ambulance, who where at our service in record time. They took us to Howick Hospital and then down to Grey’s Hospital, monitoring
our baby boy at all times, as well as giving comforting words to a hysterical mother. We would like to thank personally the Grey’s emergency and casualty staff and Mark and Nadine Winterboer, for their amazing kindness, concern and professionalism. COLIN AND DEIRDRE FERREIRA Howick

Responsibility lies with Dhlomo T
HERE has been a spate of public complaints reported in the press recently regarding the abominable service at Northdale Hospital. This was followed by a scathing statement by the Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo, where he was reported to have named and shamed hospital management at Northdale. More recently, there was a very open and frank response by the Northdale Hospital board chairperson, ANC councillor Rachel Soobiah, who painted a grim picture of the conditions under which the staff have to work, such as doctors having to share cubicles, no privacy for the patients, severe understaffing and poor ventilation, which compromises infection control, as well as a shortage of beds, among several other issues. It was also stated that the CEO raised the issues of a staff shortage with the Health Departmentandthatnothinghasbeendone about it. Dhlomo, who is Soobiah’s
ANC colleague, is the one ultimately responsible for these unacceptable conditions at Northdale and other hospitals, and if he does not have the ability to improve the situation he should make way for someone else to take over the reins. Instead, hemakesglibcommentssuchas “if it [the hospital] was his bank, he would change it”. A very arrogant statement when one considers that those using state hospitals do not have the luxury of being able to change to another hospital as they cannot afford it. They therefore have no alternative but to putupwiththeunsatisfactoryconditionsfor which his department is responsible. Unfortunately, this is not the only government department under ANC control that is failing to deliver a reasonable service to the public. Time for a change. Shocking, filthy state at Kershaw Park MY tennis friends and I were horrified to see what a shockingly filthy state a privileged group of U13 inter-school tennis players, who were taking part in the UKZN trials, left Kershaw Park in this weekend. Wehaveneverseenanythinglikethisbefore - and the lounge - you should see it. I wonder what their principals would say if they were to see the state of the lounge. It must have been a lot of hooligans who were let loose. Styrofoam cups, empty water bottles, plastic packets, containers,
clothing, racket covers and flip-flops were all over the grounds. And there are rubbish bins, by the way. Plastic chairs were carried all over the grounds, even to the furthest corners and left in the rain for Alpheus to fetch and carry back. >>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za 2014 Cansa Relay For Life participants. IT is very rare these days to find someone whose life has not been affected by cancer in some way. Everybody has a story to tell about either their own cancer diagnosis or that of a friend or family member. The Relay For Life, an international event, is an opportunity for people to unite against the disease. “We celebrate those who have battled against cancer and won. We remember those who have lost their lives to cancer and we commit ourselves to fighting back against a disease that has already taken too many lives,” said regional manager for Cansa, Lisa Strydom. Almost 90% of cancers are caused by lifestyle and environmental factors and one of the aims of Cansa is to share information about

cancer prevention. Lifestyle risk assessments, which highlight behaviours that increase an individual’s cancer risk, will be offered free to participants at the Cansa Relay For Life and information will be provided on strategies to lower the identified risks. “Although cancer prevention is our ultimate aim, the second prize is detection of cancer in the early stages. At the upcoming event, our focus will be on skin screening (as South Africa has the second highest rate of skin cancer in the world). “Free scanning of moles using a Fotofinder Machine will be offered for those who have moles they are concerned about,” said Strydom. There are no costs involved for survivors to attend.

HERE is no stopping Clinton Marius whose production, B!#ch Stole My Doek, was recently shown at the Hexagon Theatre. Born in PMB, Marius attended Merchiston Preparatory, Alexandra High and enrolled at the PMB University of KwaZulu-Natal. “Immediately after school I was drafted into the army. It was a horrible, painful, wasted two years of my life withtheonlypositiveoutcome being that it opened my eyes to the atrocities the apartheid government was inflicting on its citizens. I then went to university in PMB and after that I moved to Durban,” said Marius. He has loved the art of writing since he was a child he said. “I have wanted be a writer sinceIwaseightyearsold, and stillhavethenaivelittlepoems and short stories I wrote at that age. The productions I have written for stage, performing in some of them too are The Divine Child, Vergissmeinnicht, Guru, Thank You Very Much, Uncut – The Penis Monologues, iPuppeti, The Calf With No Name, The Fantastical Flea Circus, which scooped four awards in the Children’s Theatre Category of the

In print, is my whacky novella Sunshine – The Booklet of the Biography, and The Calf With No Name, currently a recommended reader for South African schools Grade eight second language,” explained Marius. Whenheisnotbusywriting and directing plays, Marius said he watches movies. His goals include publishing more books, touring South African provinces, writing a movie script and fluently speaking
Zulu. Marius said that being an exceptional writer requires morethanjustanidea.Hesaid that with writing practice makes perfect. “Structure, plot, characterisation are but three of the many things at play when putting fingers to keyboard. I advise that you soak up as much knowledge as you can about the craft, meet writers and writing groups and enter competitions, but most of all write, write, write. “It’s like any other discipline. The more you work at it, the more you perfect it. Listen to the advice of others, but don’t become bogged down by that advice. Your vision may end up being diluted. Writing is a fire in the heart - stoke it, feed it, let it blaze.”

She loves the mist and has researched Hilton’s history with keen attention. Hoepfl showed pupils old photographs of Hilton and shared lots of interesting facts as well as some comical anecdotes. The children gained insight into how Hilton came into being, how precious the Hilton Daisy, featured on the Laddsworth badge is, and how Laddsworth began. I hope I can do justice to the school and continue to serve the community in any way I can,” said Moore. Although born in Greytown, Moore has had a connection with Pietermaritzburg since a tender age. He was a pupil at Cordwalles Preparatory School and moved on to Michaelhouse. “Pietermaritzburg has always felt like home to me,” he said. “ HE MADE MY ENEMIES COME AND CONFESS WHAT THEY DONE TO ME”
SUCCESS STORY
My name is Priya (43 years), from Howick, Pietermaritzburg. From the bottom of my heart I thank Mr Baka for saving my marriage. My husband of 12 years had been taken away from me by another woman. After moving from one herbalist to another without any success, a colleague at work told me about Mr Baka. I went there and within three days my husband came back, using water and a mirror. Bakka also showed me my enemies. I have no other way to thank this man, only to tell the whole world about him. He can also boost business, chase bad spells and tokoloshe, unfinished jobs, quick sale of property, illness, lucky oil to win at the casino and many more. Find him in Pietermaritzburg, Cell: 071 749 6906 privacy guaranteed
I first heard about Mr Shake on a community radio talk show. I took his number down and booked an appointment. He charged me to read my fortune. I was shocked when he told me my name, and my husband’s name. Mr Shake saw that my husband and I were fighting. He mentioned that my husband was involved with another woman which I couldn’t believe. He then showed me the other woman in a mirror and I was shocked!! I had lived for 10 years with unhappiness in my marriage until now. Mr Shake cast a spell and the other women separated with my husband and later both confessed to me. Today we live happy with respect and no fighting after Mr Shake binded him to me. I recommend him to others who are suffering and regard him as my guide. My husband has been to him and his business has improved. He also helps with other problems, love, luck, marriage, business, work, etc. If you would like to book Call 073 957 0953, private home.

HE 2015 SPAR KZN Regional Hockey Tournaments are at the half way point, with two regionals taking place in PMB this Saturday. The two regionals will have schools from around PMB and Hilton competing in the central and north
regionals at the UKZN PMB hockey grounds and at Epworth. Hosting the PMB north regional is Howick High School and the PMB central regional is Treverton College. Defending champions of the central regional, Pietermaritzburg
Girls’ High School (GHS), are aiming to make it five out of five titles. At the grand finals in July, GHS over the past four years have featured in all of the medal games, finishing with two silvers and two bronzes. They will be taking on another seven schools from their area.

Coach for GHS, Taryn de Winnaar, will be at the helm guiding her girls yet again. The passionate coach has just returned from Leipzig in Germany where she was the vice-captain for the SA women’s indoor hockey team and her newly acquired knowledge will sure to be additional armour in the already formidable team. St Anne’s College are the defending champions from the northern suburbs of PMB. St Anne’s fielded a young team at the grand finals last year and walked away with silver and building on their experience hope to make their fourth appearance at the grand finals. They will need to defeat six other schools, including previous regional winner The Wykeham Collegiate. Teams that will be participating in thetournamentsareGraceCollege,St Anne’s College, The Wykeham Collegiate, Carter High School, Howick High School, Voortrekker High School and Linpark High School. In the central regional the teams
are Epworth Independent High School for Girls, Alexandra High School, St John’s DSG, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School, Maritzburg Christian School, Treverton College, Russell High School and Newton School. “Fifteen schools ready themselves to take to the pitch on Human Rights Day for the fifth and sixth regionals in our tournament. Each year, I am so impressed by how this tournament keeps growing. To all the young ladies taking to the field enjoy yourselves and at the end of the day, may hockey be the outright winner,” said MD for SPAR, Rob Philipson. Not only do the top teams go through to the grand finals, but arguably the most important people on the field at all times, the umpires. At each regional, the Most Promising Umpire is selected and then invited to join the teams at the finals in July, where they can further develop their knowledge with the whistle. The two winners of the PMB regionals will be joining Hoërskool Ferrum from the Northern KZN Regional,
Hilton College are Sunfoil champs Hilton College retained its winning form in the 2015 Sunfoil Schools Night League to take the top spot ahead of secondplaced Maritzburg College at the Oval on 13 March. The series has become a high point on the PMB sporting calendar as the KZN Inland Cricket Union strives to promote the sport in the interior of the province. The title is a fiercely contested prize amongst local schools and, as the event grows in stature, so new stars of the future are emerging. At the event are (from left) KZNICU president Yunus Bhamjee, Man of the Series Angus Curtis from Hilton College who scored 205 runs and Hilton Cairns, Willowton national sales and marketing manager.
