A lack of control of the Msunduzi Municipality’s forestry operations is resulting in massive tim ber theft.
NQOBILE MTOLO >>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za
T
HE lack of control of the Msunduzi Municipality’s forestry operations has been earmarked as one of the reasons for the theft of timber at the municipal forest. The municipal forest is located on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg and it has been managed by Natal Co-operative Timbers (NCT) since 1988. The forest is about 1475.2 hectares of planted land and approximately 700 hectares of unplanted land. The planted sites boasts eucalyptus, acacia and pine plantations. Other plantations include wattle and gum trees. At the recent Municipal Public Accounts Committee (Mpac) meeting, Mpac chairperson Mike Tarr said, “It seems like there is no proper control of the forest, no proper access…so anybody can come and steal whattheyfeellike.Thebiggesttheftisalsodone by the contractors who take the timber out because they load the lorry and no one weighs it. “No one controls what trucks come in and out of there and I suspect there is a huge problem,” he said. Mpac member ward 24 councillor Philani
Ngidi said that the stolen timber is used to build illegal shacks on municipal land. “It is a concern, especially with recent incidents that we have witnessed in ward 32 and 31. As a result of us not attending to this issue, forestryshacksarestartingtomushroom everywhere. “People use the very same timber from our foresttobuildtheirillegalstructures.Itishighly important that action is indeed taken in controlling this,” said Ngidi. The worrying factors for the Mpac members were the internal audit findings for the municipal forest which were concluded from 1 July, 2012 to 31 October, 2013. Some of the findings include the nonfunctioning of the forestry board of directors, inadequate repairs and maintenance of plantation roads, no measures are taken to weigh timber stock after harvesting and upon dispatch to market, a lack of a review agreement between NCT and the Msunduzi Municipality, losses incurred by the municipal, forestry and the incomplete verification of municipal assets. Tarr requested a detailed report to be submitted to find out how these challenges are being met.

Baynespruit River rehab
FEVER
NICOLE JOHN >>nicole@pmbfever.co.za
T
HE Baynespruit Rehabilitation Project is the contribution of the Msunduzi Municipality to improve water quality and quantity within the Umgeni Catchment area through community involvement. The Baynespruit river has previouslybeenreportedasunsafeby environmental justice organisation groundWork, as a result of heavy pollution from the industries in the surrounding area. It is still regarded as one of the most highly polluted rivers in the region, with water monitoring results consistently showing the
stream has an E. coli level above 5 000 counts per 100ml nearly 75% of the time. The safe level for swimming is 130 counts per 100ml. According to the Duzi-Umngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT) guide, any E. coli contamination greater than 50 000/100ml is a severe contamination and one in three people may get sick. The key purpose and objective of the Baynespruit Rehabilitation Project is to enhance the water quality of the Baynespruit stream by implementing community based projects to improve ecological infrastructure and reduce pollution. This will ensure that surrounding communities have access to
Northdale hospital gives back NQOBILE MTOLO >>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za NORTHDALE Hospital recently celebrated National Pharmacy Week by giving back to its patients. Northdale hospital’s pharmacy supervisor, Anjori Maharaj, said that even though the aim of Pharmacy Week was to promote the pharmacy, as a hospital, they gave back to the inpatients and outpatients at the hospital’s paediatric ward. “Pharmacystaffdonatedanumber of gifts for patients including sandwiches and cup cakes on Monday,
yoghurt and fruit on Tuesday, popcorn and juice for Wednesday, on Thursday patientshadhotdogsandonFridaywe had a staff fun day. She said that the staff members were able to raise R1000. “This money will help towards the recreation of the paediatric ward play area,” added Maharaj. The theme for the week was ‘use antibiotics wisely’. Patients were taught about the correct way of using antibiotics, diabetes and asthma medication. There were also had daily competitions which included antibiotic quizzes.
water that is considered safe enough for irrigation of agricultural crops, for fishing and recreational purposes. The Baynespruit is approximately nine kilometres with its headwaters in Northdale and joining the Msunduzi River running through Eastwood and Sobantu. The Umgeni Ecological Infrastructure Partnership (UEIP) seeks to formalise the relationship between authorities and the communities living near or using the river and implement UEIP strategies ensuring adequate supply of clean water. Key role players and ward councillors in the surrounding communities have been identified
to assist in developing a range of plans, programmes and projects around reducing pollution, managing potential flood events increasing the quantity of water by removing alien plants. One of the identified projects is already in progress and involves Mini Stream Assessment Scoring System (MiniSASS) training which is a rapid technique used to monitor the health and measure the general quality of the water of a river through the identified lack of presence of certain small animals (macro invertebrates) in rivers. MiniSASS does not however measure the contamination of the water by bacteria and viruses and
thus does not determine if the river water is fit to drink. According to Thobeka Mafumbatha,MsunduziMunicipality spokesperson, local schools including Heather Secondary, Raisethorpe Secondary and Newholmes Primary have been asked to participate in the monitoring of the Baynespruit and are involved in creating environmental awareness regarding water quality issues through environmental education. “Their participation entails each school conducting MiniSASS Assessments on a 200m section of the Baynespruit stream using the miniSASS technique,” she said.

Informal trading unit needs more employees NQOBILE MTOLO >>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za IT is a challenge for the Msunduzi Municipality to deal with illegal street trading since there is only one municipalofficialresponsiblefordealingwith this problem. Msunduzieconomicdevelopment’s Richi Ramharak told the Municipal
Public Accounts Committee (Mpac) that the challenges regarding street trading are great, and that they are increasing on a daily basis. “People need sites, people are unemployed and the streets are filthy. There are a whole range of issues that actually affect us. Today we just have one person working on street trading. Attempts have been made and reports

have been submitted to supervisors on how the unit should be structured regarding the personnel and the resources required, but unfortunately nothing has come forth. This city has not provided any human resources at all and this has not happened for the past 10 years. Promises have been made from higher levels but nothing has been forthcoming,” explained Ramharak. The street trading component has drafted a list of 27 duties, functions and time frames on how to structure street trading. “To resolve issues of street trading and informal economy, there should be real structural changes. As the municipality, we need to organize ourselves in a way that we are equipped to deal with this. We know that it is unethical to take people’s bread from their mouths. These are survivalists we are dealing with. “The important components that are lacking from this report are structural components. In the past, management has promised to create a street trading unit, hire enforcement staff, but unfortunately those things were mentioned in past reportsandwerelost along the way,” said Ramharak. The municipality has passed informal traders bylaws but there is no enforcement to monitor the process.

He is currently undergoing a fiveday aggressive chemotherapy treatment that uses chemical substances as part of a standardised chemotherapy regimen. Now, he is set for a stem cell transplant operation between September and October in Johannesburg. His mother, Chantel Rowe, said the situation is traumatic. “The doctor said if he doesn’t go for the operation, there’s only a 30% chance he could survive. THE Msunduzi Municipality call centre is now working efficiently, said Msunduzi communications and marketing manager Thobeka Mafumbatha. “There are problems which we are busy trying to solve. The problem has not necessarily been the call centre itself, but it has been the faults office. Whatever issues are sent to the infrastructure unit via the faults office, do not get resolved. We have sat down withthedeputymunicipalmanagerfor infrastructure [Sabatha Monganga] to see how we can resolve the issues. “The recommendation was that we need to combine the faults office with the call centre so that the workflow is properly managed,” said Mafumbatha attherecentMunicipalPublicAccounts Committee (Mpac) meeting. Mafumbatha said that what normally happens is that when customers call the call centre, they are
issued with a reference number and their call is then logged at the faults office. The faults office then dispatch es infrastructure electricians or plumbers. “What we have discovered is that the faults office does not open their emails as the information from the call centre is sent systematically. They would claim to not have received the information sent to them. Once the work has been done, there is no report or feedback that comes back to the call centre from the faults office to say that the work has been done,” explained Mafumbatha. Mpac member Naleni Atwaru said that ward councillors should be given information regarding queries logged at the call centre on matters taking place within their wards. “Having frequent electricity outag es in my ward…when I speak to officials they say that they are too busy to answer our calls or to provide a follow up.Wedonotgetfeedbackonwhatthe problem is, when the matter will be resolved and information on how long theresidentswillbewithoutelectricity. Constructive criticism MELA on SABC 2 on Sunday, which has replaced Eastern Mosaic, is fantastic, informative, entertaining and educational. The aim is to produce a program that caters for the viewers in the Indian community. The content is supposed to be for the consumption of all but with particular emphasis on the Asian community as the name Mela suggests. Mela is a magazine program which showcases events pertinent to the asian population. It has fashion shows, cooking demonstrations, yoga lessons and singing and dancing, amongst other things. I enjoy my dose of Mela every Sunday morning. For now I feel the show is great. Maybe SABC 2 needs to flight Sunday Sadna immediately after Mela, like they did previously. Why has the timeslotforSundaySadnashiftedtoanotherday? There are obviously differing viewpoints however when we do criticize, let’s be constructive in our criticism and give an indication of what content you would want to watch. Your ideas and suggestions will enhance Mela, which will make it acceptable to a diverse population. The point is, let’s not criticise without offering a solution that can be explored. ERITAGE - a dubious and ridiculously complex term - finds its greatest expression on 24 September, a nationally declared day of celebration of the diversity that is South Africa. The aim of this day is to encourage critical thought around the importance of celebrating and appreciating our natural and cultural heritage. However, when one analyses Government initiated celebrations which take place on this auspicious day, itisevidentthatonly “select” cultures are promoted and celebrated. Cultures like the Hindu, Muslim, Afrikaaner, Tamil and Coloured traditions are blatantly ignored in the face of the majority. How does this ignite the spirit of our late President, Nelson Mandela, who coined the phrase “Rainbow Nation”? And more importantly, whatisthepointofhavingthis national holiday if minority communities are ignored in these celebrations? Our diverse heritage is very unique and precious as it defines our cultural identity and therefore lies at the heart of our spiritual wellbeing. This diversity, if properly nurtured, could contribute to buildingacohesive society. Our heritage has the potential to affirm our diverse cultures and in so doing, shape our national character as a “rainbow nation” at peace with itself. Therefore, we need to ensure that all groups, White, Black, Indian and Coloured, feel valued within our celebrations.

I AM completely fed up with the lack of service in Pietermaritzburg. Andthistimeit’snotwiththemunicipality, butratherwith private businesses. Over the past few weeks, I’ve had nothing but bad service from companies that charge money for that poor service. I needed cupboard doors repaired; it took three weeks. @NeinQuarterly I needed parts for an appliance; that was also three weeks A gentle reminder, friends, that a good joke ago and I still don’t have them. This particular appliance requires timing as precise as poetry. A touch shop never returns my phone calls and there’s always some as light as prose. We asked a builder to give us a quote on renovations; he arrived, had a look and we never heard from him again. @rickygervais After discussing repairing our concrete boundary wall I share 98.6% of my genetic material with withmyhusband,Icoincidentallyranintoamanatthepetrol chimpanzees and I use most of the other 1.4% station who was advertising that very service on his truck. for tweeting. I VACATED my house due to a termite infestation and engaged a removal company to store my belongings. I chose what I thought was a reputable company. The inventory was professionally conducted and the owner appeared helpful. When my belongings were returned, I received a broken chair and couch, damaged DSTV decoder, six pictures with glass breakage and scratching of the pictures, and six bed legs “lost themselves” and were finally found on their premises. Missing were irreplaceable hand-painted pictures and bookshelves that a carpenter will need to replace with similar wood. A company representative noted the missing and damageditems.Nothingwasdone.Ithenreceivedademand for full payment. I e-mailed the owner to ask when I would be refunded for these items, the cost of which I requested be deducted from my payment. I was told I would be handed over if I did not pay. Following legal advice, I paid and e-mailed the owner again, expressing disappointment. He never replied. My neighbour had the misfortune of choosing the same company. Her new fridge was damaged and boxes were missing. She also received no compensation. It seems honesty, common courtesy and empathy are alien concepts these days and that these companies appear to be above the law. Anyone moving house, choose your company very carefully. In short, our heritage celebrates our achievements and contributes to redressing past inequities. It educates, it deepens our understanding ofsocietywhileatthe same time it encourages us to empathise with the experience of others. For a nation that has just been through apartheid, which had been declared a crime against humanity by the United Nations, the significance of heritage day cannot be overemphasised. Therefore, celebrations must be inclusive and educational so as to facilitate this dialogue and bring people closer together in what we commonly call, “unity through diversity”. ROY BHOOLA VIA EMAIL

Busabout. Spaces are limited, so anybody wishing to enter into the Beer Pong Championships should do so as soon as possible on www.oktober festkzn.co.za. Simply click on the Beer Pong link, fill in the details and bring your printed out form to the gate as your ticket in to the premises on October 4. Those wishing to take part in the Beer Pong Championships and the MTB race need only register for the Beer Pong. They will then need to forward their proof of payment to ROAG, who will sign them up for the ride. 4X4 For the 4x4 enthusiasts, the Land Rover owners club and Killarney have designed and built a 4x4 course especially for Pecanwood Oktoberfest. The team will be demonstrating their 4x4 skills while offering to take festival goers along for a ride. Definitely one for the petrol heads. CAMPING All festival goers are given the option of free camping when purchasing their ticket. The farm is spacious, and Pecanwood Oktoberfest does not want anybody to drive home after having a few beverages. FOOD AND BEVERAGES There will be over 22 different types of beer on
offer from various breweries as well as the full range of Distell’s brands and beverages for those of you who don’t drink beer. As always, traditional German cuisine will be on offer throughout the day but there will also be loads of other food options. OTHER ACTIVITIES There really is something for everybody at this year’s Pecanwood Oktoberfest. Dodge ball, human foosball, a mechanical bull, a bungee trampoline, prizes including free weekend giveaways and the Pecanwood Oktoberfest craft village will all form part of what is sure to be an unforgettable experience. The Springbok game against the All Blacks will be televised at 5.05pm and the atmosphere for that is sure to be electric. Also look out for the 12 2014 Pecanwood Oktoberfest calendar girls, who will be hosting the evening.
THE Gay and Lesbian Network (GLN), in collaborationwithTheRainbowTheatre Group, launched its School Project recently. GLN, through dramatic performances, explores issues in PMB schools such as hate crimes, homophobia, prejudice, discrimination, stereotypes, bullying and peer pressure. The Schools Project is funded by the Embassy of Finland and targets life orientation teachers, pupils and management at schools. It aims to combat hate crimes, homophobia and bullying and to work closely with teachers to ensure that they are able to approach these issues with pupils who are victims. Using drama as a means of exploring these issues, GLN uses strategies of forum theatre, which enables the audience watching the performance to get involved and to present them with challenges that they face.. The forum theatre was adopted by GLNinordertocreateawarenessofLGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersexed) issues through creative strategies. “The performance by the drama group was excellent and they were able to convey the message of bullying in a creative and safe way that allowed pupils to participate in the performance,” said GLN director, Anthony Waldhausen. Schools interested in joining the Schools Project can contact Anthony Waldhausen at 033 3426165.

ELDA la Grange, author of Good Morning Mr Mandela, addressed a packed Colin Webb Hall at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s annual Heritage Day event. Speaking after almost a year after his death, la Grange said that she feared that those who revered Mandela when he was alive, had almost forgotten what he was about and the respect that he had

Khoza’s autobiography, Born Almost Free... In South Africa, will be independently re-issued and has been described in the foreword by his former University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) politics lecturer and academic,
Professor Laurence Piper, as “like a World Cup for the soul - an affirming celebration of life and humanity in spite of all the trials and tribulations of our changing times, both grand and intimate”. The book is a collection of columns published in The Witness newspaper from 2008 to 2010 and consists of unpublished essays about South African social issues. Khoza’s EP, Player Poetry: Learning to Respect Women, is a seven-song album and some of the songs have been taken from Khoza’s current album called Pmb Poison: Personal Moral Regeneration. TECH TALK
MOST people don’t realize there are a number of common techniques used to crack passwords and plenty more ways we make our accounts vulnerable due to simple and widely used passwords. Avoid consecutive keyboard combinations such as qwerty or asdfg. Don’t use dictionary words, slang terms, common misspellings, or words spelled backward. These cracks rely on software that automatically plugs common words into password fields. Many people use first namesaspasswords, usuallythenamesofspouses, kids, otherrelatives, or pets, all of which can be deduced with a little research. When you click the “forgot password” link within a webmail service or other site, you’re asked to answer a question or series of questions. The answers can often be found on your social media profile. Don’t use personal information . When 32 million passwords were exposed in a breach last year, almost one percent of victims were using “123456.” Reusing passwords for email, banking, and social media accounts can lead to identity theft. Social engineering is an elaborate type of lying. An alternative to traditional hacking, it is the act of manipulating others into performing certain actions or divulging confidential information. Phendulani Literacy Quiz 2014 FEVER REPORTER
T
HE sixth annual Phendulani Literacy Quiz gets underway this month, with regional competitions taking place throughout the country. Grade six and seven pupils from over 40 under-resourced schools in South Africa will put their literacy knowledge to the test when they are quizzed on 20 books. The quiz aims to develop the literary knowledge and comprehension skills of pupils through reading. Pupils were given access to each of the 21 books included in the reading list in April this year, and will be tested on questions based on themes from each book. They read the books and are then asked questions about them while competing against pupils from various schools in their region. Marj Brown, founder of the quiz, said that Phendulani was started because there is a lack of basic literacy in South Africa. “There is an urgent need to enhance the comprehension skills of learners who do not have access to libraries and reading material to help educate them. “The quiz is a fun way to get children involved and excited about reading.” Through generous donations from
individuals, publishers, and funds raised by better resourced schools, more than 1000 books were donated in support of the quiz. The book list includes Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Children’s Madiba, The Christmas Mystery, Mr Nobody’s Eyes and The Girl who married a Ghost. The themes for 2014 are: courage, life lessons, school and family life and folk tales. The Phendulani Literacy Quiz takes place in five regions across the country and includes schools in Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Prizes in the form of books or book vouchers to the value of R7 500. The books donated for the quiz will form the start of or addition to, library resources that will be made available to all the pupils at each school. “The support we have received thus far has been phenomenal but we need more educators who are willing to get involved. “Our aim is to expand the quiz to as many schools as possible that have not yet had the opportunity to participate,” said Brown. The Pietermaritzburg Regional quiz will take place at Laddsworth Primary School on Tuesday, 28 October. For more information contact Sharon Houghting at 033 343 3256 or email Laddlib@mweb.co.za

EAM Proudly Bidvest Yamaha Racing might have been without one of their star performers at Patensie for the fifth and penultimate round of the Liquorland National Enduro Motorcycle Championship, but they once again brought home the silverware, scored great results and bagged valuable points. The Liquorland National Winterberg Enduro saw Team Proudly Bidvest Yamaha Racing without their multiple former 200cc champion, Marc Torlage, who is still suffering from injuries. The times of only three special stages counted towards the points for competitors in the master class where Pietermaritzburg businessman, Denzil Torlage, claimed his fifth consecutive runner-up result. Although he never gave up the fight, the multiple former and defending champion admits that Alfie Cox deserves the victories and the friendly but competitive relationship and mutual respect between these two
arch-rivals can serve as an example to many younger riders. Young Brett Swanepoel (19) from SaltRocksteppedoutforhisnewteam for the second national enduro and scooped the third place in the E1 (200cc) class. The defending national off-road (OR1)championfromPretoria,Kenny Gilbert, rode like a star despite an injured ankle that caused him major discomfort right through the race. Gilbert claimed the second place in E2 (open class) and finished fifth overall. Having trained very hard during the weeks before the event, he admitted that his fitness pulled him through during this tough event that was characterised by the extremely high level of competition. Before the final round of the LiquorlandNationalEnduroChampionship on 25 October, Gilbert will tackle the Rysmierbult 200, the final round of the National Off-road Motorcycle Championship that takes place on 27 September.
