During a live press conference, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced a national and provincial pass rate of 78,2% and 77,4% respectively. Both pass rates were a welcome increase in comparison to 2012, and exceeded the department’s expectation for the year. “The best class since the advent of democracy,” according to Motshekga. Jenny Rogers of Carter High School said that the principal and staff are extremely proud of the results produced by their 2013 matric class. “We are proud to announce that the pass rate for the NSC matric results for 2013 is 98,41%,” said Rogers. Deputy head girl, Jerisa Paday-

achee, achieved eight distinctions in English, Afrikaans, maths, life orientation, accountancy, life sciences, physics and maths 3. Other pupils excelling in the school were Curtley Govender with seven distinctions and six distinctions from Reosha Premduth and Caryn Anthony. “We would like to congratulate allourmatricsontheiroutstanding achievements and wish them well as they embark on the new chapters in their lives,” said Rogers. Russell High School’s top achiever was Bongeka Mntaka who achieved three distinctions.

Arthie Rampesad, deputy principal at Russell High, was equally delighted with the outstanding matric results. Ward 34 councillor Eunice Majola said that the people who are responsible for damaging property at Eastwood swimming pool should be reported to authorities.

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

W

ARD councillor 34, Eunice Majola, is calling on Eastwood residents who have information regarding the vandalism of the Eastwood swimming pool property to immediately contact local authorities. This past Saturday, at around 3pm, the windows of the lifeguards’ office and the public change rooms at the pool were smashed by a group of angry youngsters who demanded to swim. A community source said that the pool had been drained and was being refilled when two groups of youngsters came in through the broken fence and demanded to swim. “They did not understand that the pool had to be cleaned. Two groups entered through the fence openings at opposite ends. When the security guards went to confront one, the other group entered the premises and smashed the windows. They smashed the lifeguards’ office

and broke all the windows of the toilets and change rooms. These were young children below the age of 15. There are often condoms lying all over and years ago, a security guard wasassaultedbyagroupofyoungstersandwas hospitalized due to the seriousness of his injuries. The residents of Eastwood need to report these people because they are vandalizing our only swimming pool,” said the concerned community member. Majola said that vandalism of the swimming pool property has been ongoing for years. “They take out some of the concrete slabs used for fencing and break windows. This is worrying. We should be grateful that we have a pool because other wards do not have one. The community needs to look after its premises which are provided to them by the Msunduzi municipality. There is an investigation into this matter which is being conducted by authorities and we would welcome anyone who has any information related to the matter to contact us so that we can find an amicable solution to this problem,” said Majola.

DESIREE ERASMUS

M

y dearest Nigella Lawson, Iamwritingtotellyouthat I am confounded by the media hullabaloo after you confessed in court to snorting cocaine and smoking marijuana with and in front of your children. You see, I understand, Nigella. I understand that the stress associated with opening countless packets of vacuum sealed almonds is enough to drive anyone to drugs, not just you. Why, just last week in my neck of the woods, the good people of Pietermaritzburg again made the news when a brothel was discovered in one of their fabulous streets. Hours prior to this, a drug bust occurred in Montorse Drive, where R5 million worth of heroin and sugars was confiscated. This is not the kind of sugar you may be thinking of, Nigella. A cupand-a-half of this stuff will see you transmogrify into something awfully unsexy, even if you add a pint of organic cream and three free range eggs. Indeed, ingesting this sugar will see you devolve into a poor person with a drug habit, which is always so much more unappealing than a rich person with a drug habit, as the few Chanel-saturated users of Pietermaritzburg will tell you. Nigella, I must admit that like most people who have watched you on the telly licking spatulas week–in and week–out, I never realised that your

Kitchen intimacy and the dark side cooking talents included whipping up a nutritious meal for the nice drug lord down the street. Many of your detractors have said that your foray into the world of illicit substances is proof that flirting with cooking utensils leads one to the dark side. However, I am confident that your vast fan base understands that even dealers need the four basic food groups on a daily basis. I must confess that I don’t know much about cocaine or marijuana, Nigella. Even so, I find it a tad trivial that so many Nigellaphiles prefer to think of Britain’s domestic goddess smoking only salmon or bacon. Nevertheless, I feel it appropriate to offer my thoughts on other familycentred activities you may want to partake in with your children, now that I am aware of your recreational habits. Research indicates that one of the best ways to bond with offspring once you have smoked marijuana with them is to find a frail pensioner and beat her repeatedly with a cast iron frying pan. It must be cast iron, Nigella. Cast–iron adds a homey

warmth to any occasion. Should you find this too time consuming, consider visiting a whorehouse with the young-uns and mainlining heroin. This can be done in the timeittakesforasimple, hearty, family–sized flan to rise. Alternatively, you could pack a picnic basket, take it to the park, find a comfy bench and play drinking games with two or three bottles of Stroh Rum. Remember, Nigella, not

macaroni as a post–school snack. Macaroni is a well documented gateway–food. From macaroni it’s just a hop, skip and jump away from the children staggering around the house with glazed eyes looking for polony and bread. Polony sandwiches, Nigella! Should the above not appeal to your good sense, you may want to consider trying something radical, and something I must confess I have never heard of being done by a celebrity before. You may want to hire PR people to leak a story to the media about how an insufferable marriage led to your drug–use and how “mortifying” it is to have your entire life on display. I am almost sure the fan base that made you a multimillionaire will swallow this. But, as I said, I have never heard of a celebrity shifting responsibility, sodothinkitovercarefully…as a fragile, damaged and vulnerable domestic goddess should.

WINNING LETTER

Thank you to blood donors

T

O give blood is the most generous, selfless gift that a person can give. Nobodyisgoingtothankyou and you will never know those whose lives you helped to save. My husband was recently rushed to hospital for a blood transfusion. Fortunately, his blood was able to be matched at the blood bank. His life was perhaps saved by an unknown donor who I wish I could have thanked. Blood is always in short supply, so thank you blood donors. I hope this letter will serve to persuade others to give. One day it could be you. Sadly I am too old to donate. SARAH PENNINGTON Hilton

Time to crack the whip WHAT this country needs is an honest president who can ‘crack the whip’ and make his ministers crack theirs too – be they black, brown, yellow or white. Affirmativeactionmustgotoo.Madiba wisely kept out of comment on the ineffectiveness and dishonesty of government in so many fields. In particular, we need a president who really understands how important edu-

cation is for all areas of public life. When almost anybody can pass matric and get to university, what future is there for a country hoping to improve its prosperity and, thereby, the employment and happiness of its people, and play a part in African and world affairs? DMR LEWIS Howick

Speak out about your dilemma to friends, relatives and organisations that will refer you to institutions where you can obtain assistance. You may seem trapped, but summon all the courage within yourself and take those integral steps that will save your life. Violence and abuse in a relationship is symptomatic of a disturbed and unstable mind which once analysed, needs to be treated. However this does not happen and instead of the problem being nipped in the bud, it is allowed to fester until it rages out of control with devastating repercussions. A father drives into the bay with

his children and recently, a father clubstodeathhiswifeandtwochildren with a mace. These acts, as revolting as they may sound, do not happen overnight. They are premeditated, planned and executed with precision. What kind of human can inflict so much damage to his own family without having any remorse for their actions? People in abusive relationships adopt the wait and see approach and have this fictitious hope that thingswillgetbetter...remember,it never does. Youaretheonlypersonwhocan change your circumstances. Continuous deviation from these attributes will mean the relationship is on the verge of a breakdown or has completely broken down. Meddling in the lives of others THE world that we live in today has become somewhat of a place to be on account of those who meddle, pry and prod into the lives and affairs of others. Sadly, it is adults who have taken this as a favourite hobby, totally oblivious of its grave consequences. Discussing the lives and events of others has become something that some adults thrive on. The strangest part of this past

time is that this evil is done with malicious intent rather than noble intentions. The ramifications of this evil act of backbiting are far reaching for both parties while it is obvious that the victim suffers the most in this world. Family structures are sometimes broken down, the reputation of innocent people are heavily tarnished by unfounded accusations and allegations.

When we focus on our own ills instead of the ills of others, we become better people. Finally, there is so much bad in the best of us, and so much good in the worst of us, that it is really difficult to say who is really good and who is really bad.

No shame in secondhand >> There is nothing to be embarrassed about if, due to finances, parents buy school uniform at second-hand shops GABISILE NGCOBO

T

HERE is no shame in scratchingaroundsecond–handshops for school uniforms, and online classified websites are turning out to be a goldmine for bargains. These are some of the tips offered by parents who had to find ways to cut costs when dressing their kids for school. Well–known personal finance columnist Maya Fisher-French said

there is nothing to be embarrassed aboutifparentsbuyschooluniformat second-hand shops. As a mother of two school–going children, she has done it many a time. “I’ve never bought a new blazer in my life for my children,” FisherFrench laughed. Second-hand school uniforms are being re-sold on online classified websites as well. Blazers,tunics,girls’schooldress-

es, trousers, jerseys, tracksuits, caps, schoolbags, sport bags and ties are up for grabs for half the price you’d have to pay in shops. Fisher-French is also advising parents to take care of their children’s uniform. White shirts and T-shirts can be soaked in stain remover as this keeps them looking white longer. She also recommends speaking to friends and chatting about swopping

children’s uniforms instead of buying brand new items. “Parents don’t have to be embarrassed about it and see it as poverty … and that they’ll be seen like they can’t afford it.” She views recycling as a great way to save money while saving the environment as well. Governing Body Foundation CEO Tim Gordon said a group of parents can collectively buy and re-sell

uniforms that their children have outgrown. His other tips included parents avoiding branded stores and doing a lot of shopping around and comparing prices. “Some parents will struggle [to find enough money to buy uniforms] … this is when trading or selling your old or ill-fitting uniforms for ones that fit better can be thought about,” Gordon added.

TEVE Komphela is the beacon of hope who is expected to take Maritzburg United out of its gloomymiseryaftertheirpoorstartin the Absa Premiership. ClintonLarsen, whonotmorethan three months ago was appointed head coach of Maritzburg United, was sacked last week after the team of choice found themselves in the bottom three. Maritzburg United chairman Farouk Kadodia said that Komphela is able to take the team to its initial goal of finishing off the season in the top eight. “It’s an exciting challenge and one needs to acknowledge that it will not

be easy. In 2005 I came here for a very short period but it didn’t work out. This time I’m happy to say that I have officially been given this huge opportunity to be coach of Maritzburg United. It’s a serious responsibility to be brought back again to what I call stress avenue. I accepted the job with the full understanding that this challenge should be turned to an opportunity. Who wouldn’t want to come and work in Maritzburg? The city itself is beautiful, thesupportandtheamount of talented youngsters in Maritzburg are great,” said Komphela. He said that the team of choice needs to face the fact that it is in the bottom three. “It’s a wonderful opportunity. We have been through challenges of this nature before.”

He reflected on his past achievements and said that these should serve as a point of reference that would leave one with hope that something will give. “We are all excited. It’s not going to be easy but we assume the responsibilityfully.Theplayersarequiteexperienced and the squad is respectable. I hope that come May 22, all of us will be smiling. I am prepared to be part of the struggle, opportunity and challenge,” said Komphela. He added that he was happy that Kadodia had already given him approval to bring in new players should the need arise. Until then, he said that he will focus on grooming and coaching the current players. Komphela has coached several teams, including Bafana Bafana.

Junior tennis players shine in Hilton JONATHAN COOK CHRIS Folker Tennis wrapped up a busy 2013 with another successful year–end McDonalds Junior Tennis Tournament. The Hilton Village tennis courts witnessed a flurry of junior tennis activityinaneventthatsaw100entries of keen young players from across the KwaZulu–Natal midlands, and organisers CF Tennis were stretched all the way in completing 250 tennis matches amidst rain–threatening weather, which posed a constant challenge. All the round–robin matches were completed under ominous cloud cover and the organisers said credit must go to the players, plus the numerous spectatorsonthesidelines, forcompeting and watching in the uncomfortable

weather conditions, which did not make the search for quality play very easy. “One of the great spectacles of the finalsdaywasthematchbetweenJames Martens and Murray Baker,” tournament director Chris Folker told Maritzburg Fever. “Playing full–court rallies, these two competitors were hitting hard ground shots and exhibited a wide range of strokes allied to a consistency that was most impressive from young players.” Baker was the eventual winner of the most pulsating of finals. Also gratifying was the support offered by Hilton businesses as co–sponsors. “A special thank you must go to the localbusinessesforsupportingthisannual event with fantastic prizes, namely Talent Window Africa, SMG Pieter-

maritzburg, Quarry Spar, H2O, Hilton Harcourts, Hilton Village Build-it, Aquélle, Hanbury Chickens, the Company Man’s Shop, Blackwood’s Home of Gardening, Racefood and Tecnifibre,” said Folker. WINNERS Singles: Murray Baker, Brooke Veenstra, Matt Bray, Chloe Morton, Gavin Veenstra, Ashley Starmer, James Clark, Jodie Conolly and Cailene Jamaloodeen.
