‘Illegal’ boom gates removed >>nicole@pmbfever.co.za
B
OOM gates on public roads are illegal. This was the view of some residents living in the Mountain Rise area who were recently faced with the installation of boom gates in their road. Concernedresidentscontacted the Maritzburg Fever last week to report that there had been a boom gate installed at the entrance of Coronet Place in Mountain Rise. The resident, who requested not to be named, reported that the boom gate had been up for about three weeks. She said that there was one security guard at the beginning of the road and two at the gate itself. She said that the people responsible for installing the gate did so as a result of the high increase in crime in the Mountain Rise area. She claims that the residents said the gate would act as a deterrent for criminals. Residents were required to sign in a book stating who they were and where they lived. Their visitors were also required to follow the same procedure. She went on to say that over the weekend, she had three sets of visitor who were refused entry past the boom gate because they did not know the correct address of

her home. “There are residents who have been living here since the 1960’s and they are now being asked to explain who they are and their visitors are being refused access,” she said. According to the source, there was no meeting with the affected residents to approve a boom gate being erected. She also said that she reported it to the municipality on many occasions with no joy. This reporter queried the legalityoftheboomgatewiththeMsunduzi Municipality and the Mountain Rise Police Station on 2 October. Captain Gay Ebrahim from the Mountain Rise SAPS said that the police visited the site after receiving the reports regarding the boom gate. She did not confirm or deny the legality of the boom gates, however confirmed that it has since been taken down. “The police have physically removed the boom gate. All the items removed are kept in our police exhibit room,” said Ebrahim. She added that a criminal case has been opened and no arrests have been made. Ebrahim said she could not comment further on the matter as it is still under investigation. The Msunduzi Municipality had not commented on this issue at the time of going to print, despite questions being sent to them last week.

POLICE have arrested two suspects, aged 26 and 29– years–old, at the msunduzi municipal stores along Havelock Road in connection with the theft of a R150 000 drum containing copper cables. Policespokesperson,ThulaniZwane, saidthaton Sunday evening, police rushed to the municipal stores after they received a report of an alleged businessrobbery.Onarrivalthepolicefoundtwosecurity guards. “Itwasallegedbythementhattheywereconducting their routine patrols when they were confronted by five unknown men, armed with firearms, who ordered them to open the doors to the warehouse and they then removed a drum of copper cable. It is further alleged that the suspects thereafter fled the scene with the drum,” said Zwane. Zwane said that after thorough investigations, the police found that the security guards were never robbed, had made a false statement and that the allegedly stolen copper drum was found on the same premises next to a warehouse. “The security guards were immediately arrested and detained. A bolt cutter, believed to have been used to gain entry into the premises, was also found in their possession. It is believed that during the course of their duties, the guards may have broken into the warehouse by cutting the padlock with a bolt cutter and then rolled the drum of copper cable to premises next door. They thereafter contacted the police and reported the robbery,” said Zwane. Msunduzi municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi applauded the police for their work. “We are aware of the arrest and the pending investigation by the police. It’s still too early to link or to separate the two incidents,” he said. Zwane added that the suspects will make a court appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of housebreaking, theft and perjury. “Policebelievethattheymaybelinkedtoprevious robberies at the warehouse. The Pietermaritzburg police are issuing a stern warning to all those contemplating opening false cases to cover their misdeeds, that they will be charged accordingly and face thestipulatedpenaltiesfromthecourts.Policeinvestigations continue,” said Zwane. – Supplied

Male circumcision numbers on the increase
NQOBILE MTOLO
>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za SINCE the medical male circumcision campaign was launched in 2010, KZN Department of Health statistics showthat41795maleshavebeencircumcised in the uMgungundlovu district. The KZN Department of Health’s district spokesperson, Msawenkosi Mncwabe, said that they are looking at a target of 39266 males to be circumcised by the next financial year.
The department’s target population for male circumcision is from 15 to 49 years of age. However, Mncwabe said that the department has faced challenges such as males who are reluctant to test for HIV, older males who refuse to be circumcised and the shortage of doctors and trained nurses to carry out the job. “Medical male circumcision was launched in the province in April 2010 , following the call by His Majesty, the King of the Zulu nation, Good-
will Zwelithini. The King made this call with an aim to reduce the spread of HIV in the province,” said Mncwabe. He said that the department of health was then tasked with ensuring thatasafe, highqualityoperationwas done to avoid death associated with male circumcision. “The department was to achieve this by performing medical male circumcision in the safest possible way, observing all the necessary guidelines. The Centre of Excellence gives training to provincial health care practitioners on medical male circumcision and its objective is to improve the quality of a medical male circumcision service in the province. From April 2010 to October last year, the department circumcised 85 808 males in the province.

HE National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has ended a four week strike which hit the motor components sector for the past four weeks. Since September 9, Numsa members in the national auto industry, including petrol attendants and workers in the car and spare parts dealerships, embarked on a nationwide strike for a R30 an hour pay increase and a total ban of labour brokers. At the end of September, petrol attendants returned to work after wage negotiations were settled with the employers. Regional secretary for Numsa, Nkosinathi Khoza, said that Numsa and employers who
wererepresentedbytheFuelRetailersAssociation and the Retail Motor Industry agreed on a wage increase of 11,6% for 2013 and nine percent for 2014 and 2015. “The strike was not that effective because some of the members bailed out. In the first week, the strike gained momentum but when it entered into the second week, it lost its strength,” said Khoza. Employeesinotherpartsofthemotorindustry, including components manufacturers, truck body and trailer builders, panel beaters, spares shops, car and parts dealership and fitment workshops, only went back to work this past Monday. Wage negotiations stood at 10%, nine percent and nine percent for 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively in the component manufacturing

sector and increases of nine percent, eight percent and eight percent for 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively were accepted in other sectors. The motor industry is reported to have lost about R20 billion because of the strike. One of the managers at a local Renault branch said that car manufacturers and car dealers were affected across the board. “Therewasaseriouschallengewiththesupply of new vehicles. Most of the truck drivers were afraid to drive and could not deliver new vehicles to car dealerships. The parts department was also affected immensely because manufacturers were not supplying due to the unavailability of staff. However, we pre–ordered from Nissan South Africa and the parts were delayed by maybe by a week or two,” he said.

Nkonyeni’s history:

ITHtherecentappointmentofKZNlegislature speaker, Peggy Nkonyeni, as the new KZN MEC for education, opposition political parties in KZN expect her to crack a whip on corruption and fraud and steer the focus towards improving the matric pass rate, schools infrastructure and the delivery of text books and stationery. On Monday afternoon, Nkonyeni was sworn in by KZN Deputy Judge President Achmat Jappie at a ceremony in Durban. Nkonyeni takes over from Senzo Mchunu who is now the KZN Premier. Mchunu succeeded Zweli Mkhize who is now the ANC treasurer general. Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson Tom Stokes said that Nkonyeni’s appointment shows that the ANC is more concerned about political appointments than education imperatives. “It is disappointing to note that Nkonyeni comes amid a cloud which hangs over her when consideringthecorruptioncase.Nkonyenimaladministered KZN’s health portfolio while she was still MEC for health and has been linked to the multi–million rand “Amigo’s” fraud and racketeering scandal. This is just a political appointment. As the DA, we will look closely at how Nkonyeni performs.IwasimpressedwithMchunuastheeducation MEC and with Mkhize as the Premier of KZN. However, Nkonyeni is a trained teacher. There is some logic in her appointment and her position is a vital appointment in the cabinet. We have millions of people linked to the education systemincludingteachers, pupilsandparents. So she needs to be incredibly careful when carrying out her duties,” said Stokes. Nkonyeni, together with other co–accused, faced charges of racketeering, fraud, corruption and money laundering related to a multi– million rand tender of water purification plants and oxygen generators. National Freedom Party (NFP) provincial spokesperson, Vusumuzi Khoza, said that Nkonyeni will need to

find solutions for the many challenges faced by the education department “We are mostly concerned about the education department meeting its objectives. There are a lot of pupils who still use trees as shelter because they do not have classrooms. The second challenge is the matric pass rate. We would like to see the percentage improve in government schools. If private schools can achieve outstanding pass marks, the public schools can do the same,” said Khoza.

The spirit and importance of sacrifice B
Hechosetosubmit.Qurbanitherefore is not a monetary worship, or a duty that is discharged in distant poor countries. Qurbani or sacrifice is about love for the creator in contrast to love of self-obedience over rebellion. The time for Qurbani begins after the Eid Prayer on the 10th of Zul Hijjah and ends at the setting of the sun on the 12th. To dispel any misconceptions and negative reports that the Muslim sacrifice is performed inhumanely, I describe the method of slaughtering an animal for sacrifice.
First, a Muslim should take care to slaughter an animal without subjectingittounnecessarypainandtorture. This was the instruction of Prophet Muhammad. The following are pertinent points to be kept in mind. 1.Theknifetobeusedforslaughter should be well sharpened so that it slits the throat immediately, without causing undue pain to the animal. 2.The knife should not be sharpened in front of the animals. 3.The animal to be slaughtered should be given food and water.
bA/MeT/11089/13A
Y performing the sacrifice termed“Qurbani”inIslamevery year, a Muslim is abundantly rewarded and drawn closer to the creator. Since this sacrificial devotion can be offered on only three days of the year, in the Islamic month of Zul Hijjah, this God-given opportunity must not be missed by any Muslim on whom Qurbani is compulsory. Prophet Abraham had two options: either to follow the cry of his heart, ortosubmittothecallofhiscreator.
4. It should not be dragged along to the place of slaughter. 5.The animal should be slaughtered at an isolated place where the other animals cannot see. 6.It should be laid on the ground with ease as it is abominable to use undue force. 7.Only three of the legs should be tied together. 8.The animal should not be slaughtered with such force that its head is severed, or the knife reaches the spinal cord. 9.After slaughtering, the head

should not be cut off nor should the animal be skinned until the body is totally cold. It is permissible to slaughter a goat, sheep, cow, bull, buffalo or camel. The minimum age for a cow, bull or buffalo is two years. Goat, sheep or ram must be a year old, and a camel five years. Eid ul Adha will be celebrated on October 16 by Muslims in South Africa. A.S.E. Caught you! SO,allyoumiscreantsouttherewhohavebeen behaving badly as public servants, or relieving yourselves in inappropriate places, you have had 30 days to wonder if we have photos of you doing what you shouldn’t. Yes we have! This gentleman, using the term loosely of course, was caught watering the plants outsidetheWitnessoffices–atmost20pacesfrom the toilets inside the building. I can only assume the poor chap’s one sandwich short of a picnic – the building is full of reporters with cameras! There is no excuse for the disgusting habit that many men (I honestly haven’t seen one woman doing this) have of letting it all out no matter where they are, or who’s watching. Didn’t your mommy train you to go to the loo before leaving home? Here’s my favourite method of dealing with this if the offender is on the side of the road – blow your car horn loudly as you draw next to him. If he is holding the means of delivery inhishand, inmidstream, heusuallygetssuch a fright that the liquid in question ends up all over his clothing! The correct action, Mr Officer, would have been to smile, wave a gesture of apology and move on. In case you, Mr Officer, are in any doubt about your role, you are the ‘servant’, we are the ‘public’ you serve. Do your job, keep itcivilandrememberfromwhenceyoursalary ultimately comes. Thesedaysmostofushavecameraphones. Perhaps all right thinking Maritzburg residents can become a fifth column of photographers fighting against the invasion of bad manners and filthy behaviour. If we can’t name and shame, maybe we can frame and shame. Send me your photos at grumpyoldbag@pmbfever.co.za and watch the Maritzburg Fever Facebook page to see who’s been caught in the act! Next month I will be bemoaning the ever increasing noise pollution in our town and suburbs caused by two–legged and four–legged animals. Although it is only the two legged ones who can be held accountable – excessive noise by four legged animals is usually due to bad management by, and bad attitude of, their two legged owners.

Midlands Medical Centre (MMC) Private Hospital recently launched a new initiative aimed at reaching out to local residents who have diabetes. The Diabetes Conversation Map, held recently at the hospital in partnership with pharmaceutical company Lilly, is the first in a series of monthly educational workshops on diabetes. Created by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and other organisations, the Conversation Map has been implemented across the globe. Education around the condition is critical in order to prevent the spread of misinformation. Pictured at the first workshop are (from left) Pranisha Deonarain (MMC Clinical Dietician), Thandakile Mtolo (patient) and Jodi Aigner (Diabetes Educator – Lilly).

Zimbabwean Moyo moved to South Africa in 1988 as a young missionaryandisnowthefounder and CEO of Ignite My Potential, a global organization whose mission it is to provide the spark that creates a world of ignited individuals who are conscious of their identity. Speaking to a group of some of Pietermaritzburg’s businessmen and women, Moyo emphasized the importance of each person’s uniqueness as the driving force to their success in business. “Until you accept yourself for who you are, you will always be
second class citizens,” said Moyo. His motivational speeches are heard across the world, from Canada to India and he is registered with the London Speakers Bureau. Moyo’s employment history includes sales director for Charter Life, deputy general manager at Discovery Health, regional general manager at Sanlam Life and head of emerging markets development at Allan Gray. He said that the path to true success lies mainly with three things – identity, talents and purpose. “You are born in the perfect environment, to the perfect parents to prepare you for your purpose. If you feel you were previously disadvantaged, youcurrentlythinkof yourself as disadvantaged so you will be continuously disadvantaged,” said Moyo.

TECH TALK
COMPUTER WORLD
WITH the Do Gaming Championships hosted this last weekend, I feel the need to write and explain a little more regarding the gaming aspect of computers. Whilst it is true that there are literally millions of games available to play on a computer, and the average person has snuck in a game of solitaire and/or angry birds at work, gamers themselves are much more elitist. The PC gaming community has grown drastically over the last decade and has become an integral part of the IT industry. Few non– gamers know that you can actually get your SA Colours for PC gaming. There are obviously only a select few games that can qualify you for national colours, and the competitions and opponents are both equally difficult. There are also quite a few benefits for avid gamers. One of the most incredible benefits of a serious FPS gamer (First Person Shooter) is a massive increase in reflexes, split–second decision making as well as enhanced motor skills. Another benefit that is developed by playing RTS (Real Time Strategy) and MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games is a significant improvement in hypothetical–based deductions and the ability to think strategically ahead. One more important benefit to note is a benefit received from MMO (Massive Online Multiplayer) gamessuchasWorldofWarcraftandGuildWars2.Playersinthesetypes of games are taught in rigorous environments how to optimise teamwork as well as the importance of punctuality.

ANGLING Diva has launched its second annual community project, this time in aid of Siyazi Vocavoca Fitness Club, a small gym in Sobantu village. Sobantu resident Sbongile Zimu opened the gym, which she runs under the carport in her backyard, in order to keep men, women and children out of trouble. Zimu also has an unemployed ex– soccer player who helps her by coaching the children soccer. She is only able to pay him R250 a month as this is all she can afford. Dangling Diva owners Tegan Robinson and Shannon Berriman, are ap-
pealing to the community to donate any old gym equipment, sports attire and soccer gear. “We think, or rather hope, this project is going to be bigger than the one last year. We have a list of sponsors that we hope will get onboard with us and as per usual, we have chosen a communitythatgetsnosponsorshipor donations from anywhere,” said Robinson. She added that they are also looking into the possibility of hiring a hall for Zimu to have her gym classes in. Robinson said that Dangling Diva had already approached Sportsmans Warehouse who has come on board as official sponsors. Andre Pienaar, owner of Body Dynamics, has also offered togiveabasicexerciseclasstoteachin-
structors the correct exercises for the classes. “We are thrilled to take this community project on as it is exciting and keeps the Sobantu community fit and healthy and out of trouble. Sbongile is just one woman trying to make a difference in her community using exercise, and we want to help her as much as we can,” said Robinson. There are donation boxes at DanglingDivaatCascadesLifestyleCentre, Body Dynamics and the Quarry Health and Fitness gym in Hilton. The project will run until 31 October. For more information on the project, contact Dangling Diva at 033 347 1425 or email on danglingdivas@gmail.com.

F you are a lover of live music, then make sure you catch the Battle of the Bands show which premiered at Sibaya’s Izulu theatre with three sold out shows. Featuring two of KZN’s oldest and most respected bands – The Magnets and The Tyles – the audience can be expected to be taken on a nostalgic musical journey. Karou Charou, acting as emcee, will have the audience clapping and dancing. But without doubt, the wow factor of the show is the sheer genius of nine–year–old Saiyan Naidoo of the Tyles, who plays lead guitar like a seasoned professional. Watching him play Dire Straits, Santana, The Eagles and Deep Purple has reduced grown men to tears. The Battle of the Bands will feature at the Aryan Hall in Khan Road on October 26 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost R100 and are available at the Pharmacy at Spar (Northway), Medikist Pharmacy and Just Undies (Midlands Mall).

He scored nine first–class centuries during his playing days, captained EasternProvinceandalsorepresented the Warriors franchise, so he knows what a player goes through in the heat of battle. Smith also coaches the Maritzburg College first XI, who enjoyed a competitive Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week recently. The Oppenheimer Week, whichCollegehostsannually, also included St Charles, Hilton and
Michaelhouse, the latter returning four wins from four matches. This is just an abbreviated, rough guide, but the 33–year–old’s goals for College cricket can apply to any sport in any school. Schools look to sport–specific directors to ensure the continuous improvement of a sporting code and its structures, as well as education of age– group coaches. Another focus is the school’s flagship team, the first XI. Smith sees putting good structures in place through the age–groups as the bedrock of development at any school. “To have a strong cricket program, it has to be processed from the earlier
age–groups so that when the boys enterseniorschoolsport, theyknowwhat to expect. Coach education down the line becomes a vital cog in this wheel,” he said. Physical education classes also present an ideal time for a sport–specific director, in Smith’s case cricket, to work with boys during school hours. Spreading time between the A and B teamsintherespectiveagegroupsduring week–day afternoon practices means the school’s top–rated players share the professional coach’s expertise. Apart from the first team, the nextbest coach in the school must be the U14A coach, said Smith, as this is where the foundation for future first XI players is laid. Smith says if players believe in their coach and buy into what the coach is doing with them, then trust, motivation and discipline follow accordingly. “Coach/player relationships are vital. If you have an idea of what drives certain individuals, then getting the best out of your players becomes easier. Some guys need a quiet word, some like to be dealt with straight–up, others like to be put under pressure. As coach, it is your job to find out as quickly as possible what works for each individual.” Smith says he enjoys working with players and watching them grow and develop. That’s good news for Maritzburg College’s aspirational young cricketers, and an absolutely vital ingredient in the make–up of any school coach.

Dads Charity Cycle Challenge THE ninth annual Dads Charity Cycle Challenge kicked off from Johannesburg today and will make a stop in Pietermaritzburg before beginning its final leg on 13 October. The challenge began as a fun idea over a drink with a few determined friends and has now turned into a meaningful reality which, since inception, has significantly changed the lives of hundreds of school children and made some meaningful contributions to charity. Founder Rob Jackson said that eve-
ry year he is overwhelmed by the level of support. “In 2005 we managed to raise R25 000 and were thrilled with our result. This year we are trying hard to raise R400 000. Times are tough at the moment, but already many have come to thepartywiththeirgeneroussupport,” he said. This year, if they reach their goal, the charity cycle would have raised over R3 million since it began. The funds raised will be predominately divided between four charities; The Sun-
flower Fund, Fulton School for the Deaf, theGautengDownSyndromeAssociation (DSA), and The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation. A portion of the funds will also be used for the Dad’s Charity Challenge Bursary which goes to a needy boy or girl to assist with furthering their education. The Dad’s Charity Cycle Challenge will take place over five days and covers almost 668kms from Gauteng to KwaZulu–Natal. – Supplied
