ITH environmental experts speculating that the next world war might be over water, the multi-million water losscrisisstillremainsoneofthemajor challenges currently facing the Msunduzi Municipality due to a frequent and increasing trend of water pipe bursts. Moreover, the sewer system is also a problem, with broken pipes and dislodged joints causing sewer blockages which impacts on the Msunduzi river system and affects the general health of the public. A recent Executive Committee (Exco) report stated that human resources challenges and ageing infrastructure in the water and sanitations business unit make it harder for the municipality to avoid water losses. Asbestos Cement (AC) pipelines make up over 66% of the entire waterreticulationnetworkand have a lifespan of 30 years, with many of them already at the end of their life. This financial year, the munici-
pality has recorded 192 pipe bursts in 50 days which amounts to four bursts per day, and the projected bursts for the rest of the year sit at 1460. Duringthisfinancialyear, themunicipality has had a record of 520 mainline blockages which were picked up in 50 days. This roughly amountsto11blockagesperdayand aprojected4015mainlineblockages for the remainder of the financial year. Themunicipalityisstillcompiling a burst frequency analysis report which will point out areas of priority when it comes to pipe replacement. Msunduzi municipality’s annual reports show that the municipality has lost a lot of money over the years due to water losses with R63,066 million reflected in the 2009/2010 annual report, R75,459 million in the 2010/ 2011 annual report and R75 million in the 2011/ 2012 annual report. The reports collectively state that the loss was due to theft, distribution losses, illegal tampering of water meters and also to the ageing infra-

structure. In infrastructure annual report, the municipality set targets for the reduction of water losses and amongst them were the design of 10 new pressure reducing valves, the commissioning of eight new pressure reducing valves, completion of leak detection and repair activities on approximately 1 350km of reticulation, the inspection and repair of 10reservoirsandthereplacementof five kilometres of existing Asbestos Cement pipelines. However, the inspection of the reservoirs is a difficult task to fulfil because the water and sanitations unit report states that of the four fitter or turner positions passed in the 2004 approved organogram, only one is filled. Moreover, as of July this year, theVulindlelawaterinfrastructure was taken over by the municipality. This poses a challenge to the one fitter who now has to overlook the entire area when it comes to the maintenance work at the 19 reservoirs. From 21 July to 20 August this
year, 114 reports were made to the municipality regarding burst mainlines and 214 for meter leaks. The current loss rand value is still unknown but earlier this year, the Water Research Commission (WRC) reportedly released a report that the Msunduzi municipality was one of the worst municipalities when it came to water loss. At last week’s Exco, Municipal Mayor Chris Ndlela termed the water loss a ‘thorny issue’. Ndlela said that the fitting of new water meters may assist the municipality in reducing water losses. In October last year, Maritzburg Fever reported that water–quality monitoring tests by Umgeni Water found extremely high levels of E. coli in the Baynespruit River. E. coli is a bacteria which indicates a faecal contamination. The Baynespruit River cuts through Sobantu, Eastwood, the Mountain Rise industrial areas, Cinderella Park and Madiba Park. E. coli readings for October 2011 showed readings of between 600 000 E. coli per 100 ml and

1 000 000 E. coli per 100ml. Health effects of E. coli include kidney failure, abdominal cramping, diarrhoea and death. At the time, the department stated that “the causes of the increased incidents of pollution appear to be from failures and capacity constraints in the municipal sewer and storm–water systems, combined with potential illegal effluent discharged from industries adjoining the stream.” Msunduzi spokesperson Brian Zuma responded on the matter by saying that: “All storm water ultimately leads to streams and rivers. The general trendisthatafterheavyrainfalls, the E. coli of streams are elevated in comparison to non-rain days. Sewer pipelines are not designed to cope with storm–water runoff and therefore during storms, this invariably causes sewer manhole lids to be pushed up, with the resultant sewage spilling onto roads, over properties and then invariably back into storm-water drains which lead to streams and rivers.”

Finance minister tackles extravagance FEVER REPORTER THECongressofSouthAfricanTradeUnions (COSATU) supports the stance of finance minister Pravin Gordhan, regarding the cutting out of extravagant spending in government. Last week, the finance minister delivered his mid–term budget statement and highlighted the many opportunities at hand to effectively manage and cut costs. He said that the car cost limits for government officials, including those at municipal level, will be standardized, bulk purchasing will kick in to save money, security features will come into consideration and there will be no compensation when a private vehicle is used. Gordhanaddedthatwhentravelling, only ministers will enjoy the luxury of business class and that each minister will only be allowed a maximum of two assistants. Moreover, ministers awaiting allocation of houses will be accommodated in rented apartments and not hotels and no new credit cards will be issued, while existing ones will be cancelled with immediate effect. Gordhan also said that no public funds will be used to purchase alcohol and enter-
tainment allowances will be limited to R2 000. “We welcome the speech, this will save a lot of money. But the question is, after all these years, why were government officials and ministers allowed such privileges?” asked Cosatu’s regional secretary Zimasile Giyama. Giyama said that the government should also look at the issue of hiring contract engineers. “There are a lot of people in the government departments who are called engineers but all they do is draw up specifications for tenders. The right jobs should be given to the right and competent people,” said Giyama. Inhisspeech,Gordhansaidthatthebudget was a framework that acknowledges that there is hard work ahead – and recognises that a faster growing economy is in everyone’s interest. “We all gain when more people have work. We all gain when our firms can compete on international markets. We all gain when rising incomes contribute to greater capacity for public service delivery. We all gain when our divisions and inequality fade into history and we celebrate a shared more prosperous future,” said Gordhan.

Instead of the common big birthday party celebrations, Murray challenged himself to complete the Comrades Marathon, Dusi CanoeMarathon,MidmarMileandtheAmashova Durban Classic. “I wanted to achieve something that I would rememberandmakemyfamilyproud,”hesaid. Murray said he had completed the Comrades Marathon and the Dusi Canoe Marathon in 2008 and 2011 respectively, and thought it would be a great feat to complete all four of the city’s biggest sporting events in the year that he turned 40. “I was proud of myself at finishing the four events and that I had successfully completed the challenge. I got the most joy from seeing my family and friends at the Amashova finish line cheering me on. They really appreciated my accomplishment,” he said. Murray added that he wants to be an example to his daughter Hayley (12) and son Cohen (9), to show that they need to set goals for themselves and if they work really hard, then they will be able to achieve them. Murraysaidthathechosejustoneeventnext year to compete in – the Comrades Marathon. “I would encourage others to at least take part in one of the events. ESIDENTS in Khan Road are fed up with the lack of interest from the Msunduzi Municipality regarding the river at the back of their homes which is cutting into their land. Gansen Naidoo said that the river, which lines the back of close to ten houses, has over the years cut severely into their land, resulting in the back of some of the houses being right along the river bank. Naidoo said that he has being living on his property since early 1970. “I remember playing in the wa-

It wasn’t even a river back then, it was a little sprout which we used to play in.” Naidoo said that the municipality were going to build channels and a bridge in order to compensate for the excess water flowing into the river, however this has yet to be done. Over the years, what was a little sprout has turned into a river and with the heavy rains during the summer months, the banks have been slowly eroded to the point where they are now flush with some of the back walls of the houses. We have had petitions signed and delivered to the municipality so that they can address the problem but they have ignored us. It is becoming more and more dangerous,” said Naidoo. He said that over the years, affected residents have had to have
telephone poles replaced because theyhavefallenintotheriverwhen the bank eroded. Some of them have also had the banks cut into their properties, under the palisade fencing. As a result there are no fences around their properties because the banks keep falling underneath them. This has increased the risk for small children who play in their backyards. Naidoo said that they fear the worst with the upcoming rainy season, and the inevitable devastation that will come with it. The Msunduzi Municipality was contacted for comment however had not responded at the time of going to print.

Successful Hospice car fair MSUNDUZI Hospice recently held a very successful inaugural car fair. Blessings included good weather, willing volunteers, supportive motor dealers amongst a host of other Hospice friendly sponsors and donors who contributed in cash or kind to the success of the day. The multi–talented Michael Reyhman, who has become the ‘resident” emcee for the Hospice fairs, and Ken Duxbury provided the days entertainment. The Traffic Guy conducted anti–hijacking talks to eager guests who have now become more ‘street wise”. The positive feedback from this event is most encouraging, while funds raised makes the effort worthwhile. Msunduzi Hospice acknowledges and appreciates the support from all participants who have made this achievable. The public support has been phenomenal while the media assisted with publicity. N 9 October at 4pm, my mentally handicapped brother Russell Cohen took the family dog Nirvana for her routine walk around a patch of pine trees in a nearby plantation. When the time reached 5.30pm, my mother Maureen Cohen grew concerned as the entire trip should have taken less than an hour. The next four hours involved my wife Helen and I searching the plantations and surrounding areas for any trace of Russell. We feared the worst as it grew dark and opened up a missing persons report at Hilton SAPS. They dispatched a vehicle immediately and began the search, which continued until 2am the next morning. We resumed our search at 5am that day and all other work commitments were put aside to find Russell. We made a “missing persons” poster and distributed it to all major shop-

Nirvana is an 11–year old German shepherd who is slightly deaf and is by no means a tracker dog. That evening was extremely cold and we feared that Russell especially would have succumbed to the elements. At 10.17am we received a visit from Sergeant P.K Naidoo and Constable Sonia from Town Hill police station. In the back of the vehicle they let out a very exhausted and traumatised Russell and Nirvana. The police officers reported that they had found Russell at
the end of Oakleigh Drive in Wembley, extremely upset with dozens of bleeding scratches all over his legs. The officers could see that Russell was traumatised as he could not tell them his name or even where he lived except that his house was in Hilton. Theofficers, goingbeyondthecall of duty, then drove towards Hilton SAPS using Old Howick Road. Uponseeingourhouseduringthe trip, Russell signalled the officers to stop. Russell had become lost when Nirvanagotlooseandrandownafire break in a thick wattle plantation. In trying to find his way back before it gotdark, hemistakenlywalkedinthe opposite direction and after dark, he had continued to walk to keep warm and even carried Nirvana after her legs decided to give in. His panic and his condition must have kept him walking for at least 16km through dense conservancies and plantations until he reached Oakleigh Drive where he succumbed
to his exhaustion and sat on the side of the road, grief stricken until his rescue. My extreme gratitude goes out to Sgt P.K Naidoo, Cst. Soni and all the concerned residents whose support and prayers made this rescue a success. Russell is still recovering from his traumatic ordeal and I don’t think anyone will ever realise exactly how vulnerable he actually is. We never expected a routine trip that he has been doing for months to almost lead to disaster, but you can never quite understand the thinking of a handicapped person like Russell until something like this happens. We are taking precautions by making Russell take a cell phone, carrying emergency dog tags and taking him on supervised trips. N 7 June, 1893, a young Indian lawyer, known to the world as Mahatma Gandhi, was on his way to Pretoria on a train when a white man objected to his presence in a first–class carriage. He was ordered to move to the van compartment at the end of the train. Gandhi, who had a first– class ticket, refused and was thrown off the train at Pietermaritzburg and left shivering through the winter night in the
waiting room of the station. This was an incidental association with this great icon which was to later be a great benefit for the City of Choice in many ways. Gandhi later wrote: “I was afraidformyverylife.Ientered the dark waiting–room. There was a white man in the room. I was afraid of him. What was my duty? I asked myself. Should I go back to India, or should I go forward with God as my helper, and face whatever was in store for me? I decided to stay and suffer. My active
non–violence began from that date”. He made the momentous decision to stay on in South Africa and fight the racial discrimination against Indians there. Out of that struggle emerged his unique version of non–violent resistance, Satyagraha. Today, a bronze statue of Gandhi stands in Church Street, in the city centre. The city’s annual Gandhi Memorial Peace Walk took place on Sunday, 5 September 2013. The walk commenced
from Freedom Square and stoppedattheGandhiStatuein Churchstreetforaspeech, and then proceeded to the Railway Station where inter–cultural festivities took place. This event symbolises peace and non–violence that the man himself stood for and further, the Unity in Diversity. It is fast growing, reading from participant numbers that last year were at 400 and this year doubled. The event was the last one on the Pietermaritzburg Tourism Month Calendar.

Unit upgrade unveiled NICOLE JOHN

THE plans for the new Mobile Women’s Health Unit were recently unveiled at the annual fundraising event – The Pink Tie Dinner – held at Emperors palace. In four years, the PinkDrive managed to raise enough funds to realise a long term
organizational goal to provide a full women’s health service offering. The unit is the first step in that direction. male diseases and concerns such as HIV and Aids, Diabetes and Hypertension, blood pressure, Tuberculosis, and general health messaging. With this in mind, we would like to call on other organisations that may be involved in these areas of medicine to join us to create a full women’s health service offering. We are excited to

CANSA recently hosted a garden tea party for the Oncology unit patients and staff at Grey’s Hospital. BridgetteDlamini, apublicrelationsintern at Cansa, decided to treat the patients to a tea at the hospital. The Cansa team built close relationships with the patients at the hospital during their weekly wellness day, which they conduct every Tuesday. “I thought it was a good idea to have a garden tea party here because it is Cuppa season and so many organizations are hosting tea parties for Cansa. I thought having one of our own during this season
would be nice,” Dlamini said. She added that they share information with the patients about healthy living and the do’s and don’ts while they are in treatment. “Very often when a patient is diagnosed, they hear nothing after they are told they have Cancer because it is such a life changing thing to hear. We come in to educate them about how to keep healthy,” said Anelisa Msimang of Cansa. Msimang added that they have had great support from the community and theirinternswhogaveuptheirtimetotake part in the tea. “We are just trying to give back to the public because they donate and assist us so much,” she said.

Encouraging women to get tested for breast cancer >> It’s not only a lump that women should look out for – it can be any change in your breasts NQOBILE MTOLO
>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za
“I
T’S no good pretending that it’s not there.Youhavegottodoit.Thesooner you discover your lump, if you have it, the greater your chances are of recovery,” said Denise Phillips (79). Phillips and co–worker Cicely Meter (69) arevolunteersatReachForRecoveryandthey would like to encourage women to test for breast cancer so that it can be treated early. For Phillips, Meter and three other volunteers at Reach For Recovery, the subject of breast cancer is close to their hearts because all of them are survivors. The group reaches out to breast cancer patients in hospital for emotional support, and provide them with information on how they should manage their daily lifestyle, including, but not limited to, physical exercise and choosing the right prosthesis. “I was 56 when I discovered I had breast cancer. Right now we are both living completely normal lives and we are absolutely fine,” said Phillips looking at Meter. “I was 57 and it was after I nine mammogramswhenthelumpwaspickedup.Iamnow going for my 17th mammogram,” said Meter. When doing self–examinations, Phillips said that it is vital for women to look out for any changes in their breasts. “It’s not only a lump that women should look out for but it can be any change in your breasts. Everybody looks for a lump. Mine was actually a dent that I found by chance while I was doing my hair. I happened to look in the mirror and there was this dent. So it can beanychangeinyourbreasts.Ifoundthedent on a Friday and by Wednesday I had a mastectomy. Right now we go every year for a mam-
mogram and we do our monthly self examination tests. We are noticing that younger and younger girls are having breast cancer. Men can also get breast cancer. It’s very rare but it happens. Nevertheless, if a man finds an unusual lump or an unusual change in his breast, he must go and have it checked by a doctor,” said Phillips. Reach For Recovery is a worldwide organisation formed in America in 1952. It has been active in South Africa since 1967. In the Pietermaritzburg area, Reach For Recovery volunteers visit Mediclinic, Netcare St Anne’s Hospital, Midlands Medical Centre Private Hospital, Grey’s Hospital and Howick Private Hospital. “When we visit the patients we take what we call a comfort kit, a bag with a small cushion for under arm comfort and a temporary prosthesis which they can use until they can be fitted with silicone. When we go to visit patients in hospital, obviously we can empathise and sympathise with them because we have had breast cancer. One of the reasons we like to visit is that a lot of them are in shock when they are diagnosed and they find it really hard to deal with that. When they see us walking into the ward, andwhentheyseethatwearefitandwell, they all cheer up immediately. People do take encouragement from that,” said Phillips. She stressed that no two patients are the same. “No one reacts the same to medication. Some people just sail through their treatment and other people battle and they have reactions,” she added. Tackling all obstacles at Pelham
To celebrate its 110th anniversary this year, Laddsworth Primary School in Hilton has held a commemorative event of some kind each term. To mark the start of spring and celebrate the anniversary, the school recently planted 11 indigenous trees along the boundary of the sports field, once for each decade of the school’s history. TECH TALK
A few weeks back I wrote an article regarding the new Haswell Computer Processors, to which I received a response from a lady asking me for some advice regarding her processor as it was having heating issues. The main cause was found to be the Thermal Compound on her processor which had somehow been wiped off. The thermal compound, also referred to as Thermal Paste, is a small layer of grease that is applied to the surface of the processor before the heatsink (the big fan in the middle of the main digital board) is placed on top. It’s an absolute necessary component as there are small gaps of air between the processor and the heatsink. Now as we all know, air conducts heat poorly and therefore causes a very negative effect in transferring heat from the processor to the heatsink. Thermal Paste is used to fill these gaps of air. Thermal compound can be made of a few different types of materials, the most commonly used materials are: ceramic, metal and carbon. The above mentioned materials are often in powder form and suspended in a gelatinous silicone compound which is where the term “silicone paste” derives from. Years ago, CPU’s only dissipated around 10wattsandthermalcompoundwasonlyusedbytechnicianswhooverclocked their computers. However, in today’s day and age, your computer has compound placed under every heatsink!

The point of difference on the field >> Former All Blacks head coach John Mitchell speaks about his passion JONATHAN COOK
T
HERE is an exciting buzz at the UKZN Rugby Club’s headquarters on the Pietermaritzburg campus – and it’s not just on the field. The Varsity Rugby Stadium clubhouse in the Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road in Scottsville has a newly refurbished pub under the direction of the experienced Frans Vorster, while grounds keeper Dave Evans has the rugby field in superb condition ahead of the new season. Much of this impetus is down to one man, former All Blacks head coach John Mitchell who shocked the rugby world when he took the post of head of rugby at UKZN and head coach of the UKZN Impi, the club’s flagship Varsity Shield team. Mitchell spoke exclusively to the Maritzburg Fever at the Sin Bin pub and restaurant in the rugby clubhouse. He said youngsters must remember there is a connectivity unique to the sport that creates job opportunities outside the game, the rugby family rallies around its members all over the world and while few make it to the top echelons of the sport, there is a place for all. But much of this is underpinned by getting a good tertiary qualification post–school. “Rugby connects people for life,” said “Mitch” as he is universally known. “The people you meet, the lifelong friendships you make, the support when in time of need, it’s amazing what rugby can do for you.”
The coach will be imparting his knowledge to all the club’s coaches, so from U20 sides up the players will have the benefit of Mitch’s knowledge.| “Rediscover what’s inside you. I value trust, being honest, working together.”
Pre-season is important. “Conditioning is key. The little things make the difference. Rugby is a game of transition, a game of so many unseen things. Don’t get frustrated, but if you come tomatchdaywithoutapositiveattitude it counts for nothing. Nutrition is very important, putting the right fuel in your body. If you don’t fill your tank correctlyeveryday, itwillcomeback and bite you in the backside at training or on match day in the days ahead.” Pre–season Mitch is big on developing a running base, muscle endurance, repeat effort, physical contact and self–awareness. “You don’t have to be the best player in the team, but what you have got to do is bring out the strengths you have. As a lock you might be just okay in the scrums, just okay in the lineouts, but what is your point of difference? Is it hitting the rucks, the cleanout, what special strengths can you bring to the team? Don’t turn up for the new season thinking it’s going to be the same as last year. What is your point of difference?”

Talent runs in the family

The Spur KZN Trail Series finished recently with a petite 11–year–old girl from Pietermaritzburg taking top honours in the series. Julliete Goebel (R) entered the short course Challenge races in the open category and came in first position in the female category in all but one of the races in the series. She beat male and female runners much older than her, ending third overall in two of the races. Her lowest overall placing was eighth in the last race. Over the course of the series, she has proven herself as a talent worth keeping an eye on, and the future of KZN trail running is bright with this young star at the front of the field. Her dad, Arno Goebel (L), also took part in the longer Championship Series and was the second male in the veteran category.
