HE massive roadwork project outside of the City Hall along Chief Albert Luthuli (Commercial) Street is starting to take shape. The road has been paved with red bricks and electricians are on site to ensure sufficient lighting for the street lights and robots. At the corner of Church Street and Chief Albert Luthuli (Commercial) Street, heaps of soil is stacked right next to the robots, making it hard for pedestrians to cross the road freely. Langa Musa from Elandskop said that this intersection has become a danger zone because there is no proper control of the traffic flow. “Everyday we duck cars because we do not know who has the right of way. Traffic officers should monitor the area before harm is done,” he said. TheconstructionispartofthePietermaritzburg Urban Renewal Programme (Purp) which started this year and includes the upgrade of street paving and road infrastructure, marking of the roads, fixing non–working street lights while being environmentally conscious byinstallingsomesolarpowered street lights, addressing illegal informal trading in the CBD as
well as illegal outdoor advertising. There will also be street furniture and horticulture work done as the main attractions of the project. With the Tourism Hub building alongLongmarketStreetstillunder construction, and the Publicity House building to receive a facelift as well, it is not clear when the precinct will be open to the public. Someofthesolarpoweredstreet lightshavebeenerectedalongLoop Street and Langalibalele (Longmarket) Street. Msunduzi Municipality spokespersonBrianZumasaidthatthere has been a delay to the completion of the road paving on Chief Albert Luthuli Street outside the City Hall, and said that the recent rains have not been helpful either. “We are now at a delicate stage of finishing and winding up. We ask the public just to be a little bit more patient with us. We will open the road before the Christmas rush. They will appreciate the finished product that will add sheer
driving pleasure once finished. From here, the contractor will move to Langalibalele Street, where very minimal disruption will happen to traffic, as they will only be working on the pavements,” ex-

BY2025,thePietermaritzburgairportmay have to be relocated because of a projected increase in passenger volumes. Acting municipal manager, Dr Ray Ngcobo, told the Executive Committee (Exco) that the possible relocation will ensure that bigger flights are accommodated at the airport. “The development of the master plan of the airport is an ongoing process because there is a view that says in 2025, we will have reached a period of saturation at the airportandthegrowthinpopulationwould suggestthatthisairportwillneedtoberelocated,” said Ngcobo. He said that since the Pietermaritzburg airport is able to draw passengers from a 100 kilometre radius, this means that the airport is drawing passengers even from within the eThekwini Municipality. “Wearecurrentlyanaspiringmetroand the population is growing. If we go according to the projections, we believe that 2025 will be the period when we will need bigger flights like the Boeing. Currently, our facilityandrunwaylinedonotallowforaBoeing and it is for that reason that we may consider looking for an alternative site. The arrival of SA Express is another significant milestone. We are also investigating possible flights between PMB and Cape Town. That is a positive development,” said Ngcobo. Ngcobo said that currently, the airport is between 80% and 90% complete. Mayor Chris Ndlela said that the decision on whether or not Pietermaritzburg becomes a metro rests with the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB). “As things stand right now, the status quo remains. Hopefully we will hear developments as soon as MDB has determined that we are ready for that [becoming a metro] in whatever form and content,” said Ndlela.

‘No’ to bikes in Bots NICOLE JOHN
>>nicole@pmbfever.co.za FOLLOWING the recent decision to continue allowing dogs in the Botanical Gardens, parents in the city want
toknowwhytheirchildrenarenotallowedtotaketheir bicycles onto the premises. Speaking to the Maritzburg Fever, local mom CarolineRossouwwantedtofindoutwhatthereasons were for children not being allowed to ride their bikes on the pathways of the gardens. “Just as the decision to allow dogs in the gardens was taken on the basis that the dog owners monitor their animals, clean up after them and keep them on the pathways and out of the flowerbeds, why can we, as responsible parents, not monitor our children while riding their bikes on the pathways,” she said. Roussow said that family outings to the gardens
are so limited for her children because they have do not have much to do. “At least if they could ride their bikes they would be more entertained. We are happy for the dog people butwearejustthinkingaboutthechildren,”sheadded. However Siphuxolo Ngqasa, marketing and events officer of the South African National Biodiversity Institute at the KZN National Botanical Garden, said that there are no plans to allow bikes onto the property. “Bikes with pedals are not allowed in the garden. We only allow push bikes for toddlers. The bikes in the garden are a safety risk because they will be using the pathways that people use to walk on,” said Ngqasa.

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za THE establishment of the plans approval committee, and the new computerized plan approval and archival system, mean a quicker response from the Msunduzi Municipality to business applications submitted by interested investors. In August this year, the municipality received 134 applications and 74 were approved. Acting municipal manager, Dr Ray Ngcobo, told the Executive Committee (Exco) that the municipality has made a significant stride in this field. “The plans approval committee is constituted by officials from all the relevant departments. In the past, an applicant would have to walk through various departments to seek approval. Under the directive of the municipal manager, wehavesetupthiscommitteeandwe are dealing with all the backlogs. We are being
supported by technology that we have outsourced which can easily scan plans and circulatethemelectronically.Thenewplanapproval system will provide better control for the building plan submission, examination and approvalprocess, andwillalsoallowsimultaneouscirculation of building plans to all internal departments and units,” said Ngcobo. The city is currently faced with developments worth over R4 billion. Ngcobo added that he was happy that phase three of the Liberty Midlands Mall would soon take off, as court proceedings which had delayed the plans had been resolved. “We are very happy to say that that development is definitely happening. The project is a R500–milliondevelopment.Wehavesortedout all the outstanding impediments, and all the legal challenges that were there have been resolved. We are signing a service agreement with Liberty to state that the project is definitely happening,” said Ngcobo.

Proud police officers >> Mountain Rise police members received medals for their commitment and dedication
STRAIGHT talking station commander, Brigadier Francis Bantham, is appealing to the public to be extra vigilant this festive season. Bantham said that the community is reaching a time in the year when the need for money is high and people go to extreme measures to get it. “ThebiggestappealIammakingtothecommunity is to encourage them to not keep large amounts of cash in their homes. This makes them a soft target if there are people who are aware that they do this,” she said. Bantham said that during this period, there is also an increase in residential house robberies because many people go away for the holidays. “We are asking neighbours to do the neighbourly thing and keep an eye on homes if they know that their neighbours are going away,” she said. “They [neighbours] are the ones who are familiar with the people and vehicles that frequent their areas, so if they notice something unfamiliar or suspicious they need to report it to us,” said communication officer, Captain Gay Ebrahim. Bantham also emphasized her concern over the increase in protection orders that are being served – over 90% of which is a direct result of alcohol abuse. “We are encouraging people to go back to their family values. We are also appealing to the liquor outlets to adhere to the times in which alcohol can be sold and this will help reduce the abuse,” she said. There will be various and continuous crime prevention operations to raise awareness of crime in the area and to sensitise the public. “This is the year of service delivery. If you have a complaint, I encourage you to contact the duty officer. As a station commander I would like to wish the community a blessed festiveseasonandIwouldliketothankyouforyour takingourhandsinthefightagainstcrime,”said Bantham. “You have earned it [the medals] so wear them with pride,” said Reynders. Reynders also said that in the past, the station had been in the lime light for all the wrong reasons however in recent years, it has achieved a lot. “Beaproudpoliceman.Remember we are here to serve and not to dictate, so do the right thing at the right time for the right reasons,” said Reynders.

Randles Attorneys high tea
NICOLE JOHN

RANDLES Attorneys in Pietermaritzburg recently held its first client function purely dedicated to women. Jo Mayne, a director at the firm, said that she is pleased for the public to know that the firm has a staff compliment mostly made up of women, so it was fitting that they change the way they entertain their clients. The high tea was held at Sa-
vannah Estate . Guests were treated to entertainment by Di Veness and were given fashion advice from Fusion Fashion’s Idoni Forder. Guests at the function were asked to make a donation to Assist Pietermaritzburg if they wished to enter the lucky draw. Assist founders, Mark and Rene Morcom, were present and received almost R5 000 from the guests and the Randles team. To view more pictures from the event, visit www.pmbfever.co.za

YCLESAFE KZN, a project of South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD), recently handed over protective gear to 20 young, disadvantaged cyclists. Local resident, Dumisani Masinga, has partnered with Vertical Spaces and is now training the youth, aged 14 to 18, to participate in decathlons and triathlons. CycleSafe handed over five off road bikes, two road bikes, water bottles, spare tubes, 15 helmets, a goodie bag with reflective gear, cycling tops for each member and a lawn mower. “South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) are very concerned about the large number of cyclists who are being injured or killed on our roads. They [Vertical Spaces] are critically short of equipment, basic ma-
terials and finances. Dumisani receives no salary and is unemployed,” said Caro Smit of SADD. The money which made the donations possible was raised by participants cycling the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour for SADD, and a golf day. Used cycling clothes were donated by Burg Wheelers and Tinus Havenga, aswellasPSGandthePietermaritzburg business community. Smit told the young cyclists that they need to follow road safety rules, especially about being very visible as pedestrians and cyclists. She said that cycling would keep them away from alcohol and drugs. They in turn have committed to work with SADD and promote safety education at the taxi ranks. To donate cycling gear to the team or for more information, visit the SADD website at www.sadd.org.za or phone 033 347 0103.

Spent love-nectar on FEVER Council’s floor
November 13, 2013
maritzburg
DESIREE ERASMUS To: The Publisher (Erotic-romance sec-
tion) Please allow me, through this communiqué, the opportunity to be blunt…as blunt as a chilled spatula on a smooth, toned bottom in a well–lit Pietermaritzburg kitchen. The on–going global financial crisis has taken its toll on my savings, acquired through the organs–for–cash exchange and a brief stint in the Republic of Cape Town as a freedom fighter. Today, I am relegated to the position of impoverished KZN columnist living in acrappyDurbansuburbcalledBerea, with myonlysaleablepossessionbeinga Marlboro–stained lung unworthy of the muti– market. However, given my optimistic outlook, I believe that my untimely financial demise could very well be your literary windfall. I want to write for you. My slightly above–average powers of observation tell me that the romance genre has been breathed new life – in sharp, shallow little spasms–withtitleslike50ShadesofGrey and others falling within the erotic literature genre. Given the sheer calibre of your publications – which teem with razor–sharp wit,
intellectual fortitude and plot complexities – I believe that my uniquely South Africanperspectivewillresultinasalessurge in your erotic–romance market. I enclose herewith my manuscript and a synopsis of my work. As per your guidelines, please note that the novel adheres to the strict criteria established by the Barbara Cartland Light-Bondage Foundation™. Synopsis: Spent love–nectar on Council’s floor This soul–eviscerating tale straddles the hot, sticky suburbs of Pietermaritzburg and the rounded, tender hills of the Midlands. It is here that lust, deception and heartbreak play out in the lives of KZN’s politicians. Blain Hung is a strapping young Pietermaritzburg–based DA councillor with nutmeg hair, cayenne pepper eyes, cinnamon skin and parsley breath. Angel Breasted is his pouty– lipped assistant. Breasted had her chance at political fame thwarted after a disastrous love affair with senior parliamentarian, Chisel Chin. ANC stalwart Chin, native to Pietermaritzburg, left Breasted a broken but beautiful shell–of–a–woman–child after realising she could not amply satisfy his foot fetish. The eight day relationship between Breasted and Chin took place six months before Breasted, once an ardent ANC supporter, signed–up with Hung and the DA. The Breasted Chin romance blossomed over a vetkoek and wooden–paddle combo at Kings Park Stadium, but ended in slow rolling tears of anguish in the deli section of Woolworths. It was here that the couple parted amidst accusations of fetish incompatibility while trying to choose between organic butter lettuce and humus for that evening’s foot fest.
Butnow, withelectionsfastapproaching, the trio find themselves thrown together in a political love triangle – nay, eroticstorm–asChinissenttoinvestigate allegations that Hung has his hands in the office cookie jar, so to speak. Breasted is understandably torn, and at the perky–bottomed age of 25 is faced with her first moral dilemma that does not involve a rash. With whom will she side? Will it be the seniorparliamentarianwithsalt’npepper hair and a foot fetish who broke her fragile, waif–like heart, or the hard–bodied councillor that she carries a phallicky torch for? The book traverses the entire South African political spectrum, summed up in 30 hot, sweaty lawsuits, 200 allegations of cookie–jar shenanigans, 203 sex positions and nine sex–tapes. The climax takes place at a high–brow political function in the Midlands, where various councillors from both parties gather to throw cake at each other. All comes to a head when Chin declares his love for Breasted publicly and asks for her razor–nailed hand in marriage. However, unbeknownsttoBreasted and Chin, Hung has uncovered evidence that puts the cookie jar shenanigans squarely at the often–bound–feet of Chin. Readers soon learn that it was in fact Chin who orchestrated the fraud and corruption set–up so that he could award a tender for a riding–crop factory to his brother–in–law. Who is the fragile hearted and rubber thighed Angel to trust? Who indeed! Eagerly awaiting your response, dear publisher, and so hoping it will be on pink paper! Des xoxoxo (slap, tickle, slap, tickle)

AN you hear me? Probably not if you are one of the many who have written to me regarding noise pollution. One poor soul out there is being bullied, there’snootherwordforit, byabunch of inconsiderate students housed in a digs next to her home. This lady worked hard all her life to afford a nice home in a previouslypeacefulsuburb, onlytohaveherautumn years invaded by constant noise after the house next door was sold and turned into student digs. Repeated pleas to both the digs residents and their parents have had no effect. A visit from the constabulary has had no effect. My suggestion, assuming these idiots behave like normal students and party all night and sleep late, is to take your speakers into your garden at 5am, point them towards the offending digs and blast them awake with the 1812 Overture at full volume, morning after morning. I am sure your other neighbours are as fed up as you are with this digs on their doorstep, so tell them your plan and see if you can get them to do the same. There are an amazing number of hearing impaired residents of Maritzburg’s suburbs – no wonder we have so many choices of audiologists and hearing aid providers. How do I know this? Easy, just listen to the dogs left to bark incessantly through the night in residents’ gardens. The only way the dog owner could sleep through the cacophony was if he was stone deaf. The entire neighbourhood is awake except you! Listen, oops, sorry, you can’t, can you? Adogshouldbekeptinside.Anoutside dog is hopeless as a guard dog, easily poisoned, distracted or let out through a hole in a fence or opened gate. Dogs left outside get bored and bark for the hell of it. It is not their fault. Last

time we had a problem with a constantly yapping canine in our area, and I was still awake listening to it at 2am, I marched round to the offending neighbours house (truly a sight to behold in dressing gown and slippers) and leaned on his doorbell until I saw all the lights go on and he appeared at his front door. I then gave him the name of one of the aforementioned augiologists, wished him a good night and suggested that we should carry on the discussion the next night if I was still awake at 2am. The dog now sleeps inside! What a shame that we have to go to such lengths to claim the right to peace in our homes. And I feel so sorry for those who do not possess my stroppy insistence on a good night’s sleep. Good luck to you all, and if you try out my suggestions and they work, I’d love to hear from you. If you try out my suggestions and get a seriously hostile reaction, email me the ward number and I promise to send flowers! Lastly, thanks to Mrs M Goldie for a letter that made me smile (for those unfamiliar with the term, a letter is hand written, in ink, on paper, put into an envelope, has a stamp...actually that’s probably enough new terms for the moment).

WHILE I laud the work of Esther House, the article describing its work (Maritzburg Fever, 6 November) included its address. This is extremely dangerous since partners/boyfriends must never know where the women are staying. Their safety at Esther House is now compromised. In praise of customer service THERE are many things to moan about nowadays, but then these also provide a great backdrop for the “pockets of excellence” that occur. I had an excellent experience of customer service recently when I visited the Mndeni Meats in Victoria Road. I had reason to return a product that hadn’t been packaged correctly in my opinion. I didn’t rate my chances, however, as I didnt have the till slip and the meat had in the meantime also been frozen since buying it. To make things worse, I foolishly chose to pop in on a month–end Saturday when the butchery couldnt have been busier. In spite of all of this, a friendly lady till server immediately attended to me and took me over to meet the shop manager Trevor. This gentleman heard me out, responded with a warm smile and a “no problem”attitudeandwithintwominutes,Ihadmymeat replaced – and with twice the volume as a courtesy gesture. Then I was given a wonderful handshake andwishedwellasIwentonmyway.Youdoadouble take in todays market place when you are treated so well, and with such a genuine display of customer concern. AVE Karlsen is an institution at St Charles College and has played an integral role in taking their cricket into the mainstream of South African school sport. The St Charles Cricket Oval is where much of the first XI match action plays out, butitisthecountlesshours“Karly” has spent nurturing the talent of promising youngsters during practices that should be most appreciated. A history teacher and master in charge of cricket and football, Karlsen wasoncedirectorofsportbuttheclassroom had a strong pull. “Our aim has always been to compete in the top–rung of cricket amongst South African schools,” the first XI
coach tells Maritzburg Fever. The 2014 season looks to be a good harvest for the first side as the 2013 team had just three Grade 12s. Two of the top players this year have been captain Andy Darroch and wicketkeeper/batsman Ben Philpott. Kylan Naidoo’ssuccesswithbatandballindicates that the future is bright. Karlsen believes in the fundamentals and the skill of thinking on your feet. “Basicsskillsarekey, whilethefacility to adapt to the prevailing match conditions is also very important. We always play for a result and a favourite this year was beating Maritzburg College, a school I admire, on their home ground.” The coach said the challenges that
lie ahead include ensuring the sport is made a compelling attraction, instilling the fun and thrill of cricket right through the school’s teams. “It’s the old saying – if you widen the base the top will flourish, while for our best players it is imperative that we continue giving them the chance to play top cricket at this level on a nationwide scale.” Why the appeal of coaching? “Endeavouring to help youngsters become the best they can be, which is thebeautyoftheteachingprofessionin that you have the opportunity to help make the world a better place. And sport is just one of the tools we as educationists use.” Dave Karlsen – a man of principle and one of school cricket’s finest sons.
