URING a joint operation, the Mountain Rise SAPS arrested two suspects in Cinderella Park for the possession of marijuana. Captain Gay Ebrahim, communications officer for the station, said that the crime and intelligence unit conducted a cordon and search operation during their usual tour of duties. During their foot patrol, they noticed two males acting suspiciously. The unit kept observation on them and eventually followed them into a house. Upon entering the house, one of the suspects acted as though he was sleeping. The officers proceeded to search the premises with both the suspectsand,atvariousplaces,found marijuana which, in total, amounted to 50kgs with a street value of approximately R30 000. The suspects were immediately arrested. Investigations continue. This drug bust took place during a joint operation which involved all unitsfromtheMountainRiseSAPSinfiltrating their entire precinct, checking on the compliance certificates of second hand good stores, liquor licenses of local pubs and taverns and general monitoring on their hot spot areas. This was the beginning of their festive season crime operation and will be ongoing throughout the holiday period.

KZN had the highest voter registrations

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za MORE than 1000 people in the Msunduzi area registered during the recent voter registration weekend. The general elections will take place next year. According to a report fromtheIndependentElectoralCommission (IEC), there were 774 women and 625 males who registered in the Msunduzi area. KZN had the highest numberofnewregistrationswith283 407. The provinces with the least number of registrations were the Northern Cape and North West with

22871 and 45006 respectively. In KZN, a total of 4747 voting stations were opened and about 9500 staff were employed to administer and monitor registration of voters. Neliswa Ngcamu (18) from Northdale, said that she is looking forward to next year’s elections as she will be voting for the very first time. “I feel happy that I will be exercising my right to vote. It is my responsibility to make sure that my voice is heard and that is why next year, I will bemakingmymarkonthatballotpaper,” she said. The IEC stated that registration

went smoothly and that the turnout of voters was pleasing. “KwaZulu–Natal has increased voter registration figures from 4.5 million before the weekend to, for the first since our democracy, 4,8 million,” said KZN electoral officer, Mawethu Mosery. He encouraged voters to visit their municipalelectoralofficestoregister. “Those who cannot travel to visit their municipal offices can write to us stating their reasons and arrangements will be made for commission staff to visit them at their homes and register them,” he said.

ARKING assistants who put down their tools last week as they demanded better pay have now gone back to work after talks were held with their employer, Panzascore DPS JV. Panzascore is the company responsible for implementing and managing the city’s pay and display parking management system. LastweekMondayandTuesday,theparking assistants abandoned the city streets and went straight to the Panzascore offices to demand answers on grievances, which they said had been previously raised with the

company management, regarding a better pay. One of the assistants spoke to the Maritzburg Fever and said that they were demanding a basic salary as they only get 40% of their daily takings. “Parking in the city costs R5 or R6 per hour. If you do your calculations, you can imagine how much I take home each working day.ItisfarlessthenwhatIusedtoearnwhen I was a car guard. We have families to feed and school fees to pay. We also pay for our own uniform which costs R200.” The assistants also complained that they use their own airtime to phone the office and the traffic department when they spot vehicles whose owners have not paid the parking

tariff. Panzascore managing director Rienus Niemand said that the company management has engaged in discussions with the affected contractors to help find solutions to challenges faced. “The system relies on parking attendants issuing pre-paid ‘pay and display’ parking tickets to motorists wishing to park. The tariffs are set in accordance to the relevant byaws.Parking attendantsreceive40%ofall parking revenue generate d,” he said.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 GETTING to ride around in the back of a police c ar with the blue lights flashing, attending accidents and being right there when drug busts are made will go down as one of the highlights of my year. I was right there during the Mountain Rise SAPS joint operation which took place last Friday night. It all began with us visiting some of the local second– hand good stores in Raisethorpe to check their compliance certificates. This was followed by a visit to certain bars in the area to ensure that the owners had a valid liquor license. Our first piece of action was at a bar in Northdale when the police caught employees loading full cases of beer onto a van, which the SAPS believe was being sold to illegal taverns and shebeens. We witnessed much resistancefromaggrievedcustomers,and,forlackofabetter word, lame excuses from the owner about what exactly was going on. Whileweleftthepolicetosortoutthatissue,wewere taken back to the Mountain Rise police station to report onadrugbustthathadtaken placeafewminutesearlier. When we arrived, the marijuana was spread out on the table with the members who were involved in the operation proudly standing by guarding it. It took us a few minutes to realize that the suspects were also in the room, sitting uninterested on the bench behind us. A sight for sore eyes, I assure you. Another interesting part of the ride along for me was the accident scene which we had to attend to. It happened by chance as we were on our way to Sobantu to visit the local taverns. A minibus had rear–ended a van and was causing a backlog of traffic in the pouring rain. It was then that our blue lights were switched on and our officers quicklyandefficientlyhandledtheincidentandescorted both vehicles back to the station. Visiting Dark City was also exciting. A dangerous place situated deep in Sobantu which I never knew existed before this trip. We visited a few of the taverns in Sobantu before our ride along had come to an end. It was quite an experience getting to see how the police try to keep their area safe. Not the usual way most people spend their Friday night but what a fantastic experience. Thank–you Mountain Rise.

Exco members clash over R90 000 NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za THE City Hall’s council chamber was split in two after opposing views from the Executive Committee (Exco) members surfaced on whether or not the Msunduzi Municipality shouldfinanciallysupportagospelmusicfestival to the tune of R90 000. The festival is organized by Big Fish Music and it is due to take place on 30 November at Woodburn stadium. Big Fish had approached the municipality for R90 000 in financial supportasitwillrunapublicawarenesscampaign on HIV/AIDS during the event. Democratic Alliance (DA) and Exco member Mergan Chetty said that right now, the municipality needs to tighten its belt because of its financial situation. Seconding Chetty’s remarks were the DA caucus leader Bill Lambert and Ntokozo Bhengu of the National Freedom Party (NFP). Bhengu said that he would be very happy if the R90 000 could be used to help poor families in the city. Exco member Inderjit Manilal said that the R90 000 is not a huge investment in terms of the benefits that will be accrued in terms of tourism. Msunduzi marketing manager and spokesperson Brian Zuma said that the event would attract a large crowd, including people from out of town. ActingmunicipalmanagerRayNgcobosaid that the municipality is leveraging on the event and therefore saving a lot of money. “It is the time of the year when we have to makesurethatweruncampaignsaroundroad safety, rape and HIV/AIDS. If we cannot leverage on events like this, it means we have to come up with R800 000 or R1 million where we can stage events to issue our messages,” he said. It was resolved that the municipality grant Big Fish R90 000 for the event, with objections noted.

Residents take back their streets

ESIDENTS in the Clarendon area took to the streets during a Red Socks run last Friday, standing up for their right to run and walk freely and without fear in their area. Following the attack and rape of a prominent doctor while she was jogging on Villers Drive last week, community members decided to take a stand against an incident such as this repeating itself. Margie Henderson, together with her husband Clive, called a community meeting on Wednesday night. Speaking to the Maritzburg Fever, Henderson said the meeting was a great success with over 100 runners, walkers and general community members attending. “There were some good ideas that came from the meeting and many workable and practical solutions that we, as community members, can put into place,” said Henderson. She said that they are not out to solve the problems of the world,

but simply to address the issues affecting their community. “There are many community members who are apathetic about the crime in our area and rely on other people to come up with solutions. We are saying that if you live in this community, you need to go withthecommunityspiritandhelp out where you can,” she said. A resident from the area, Taryn Heathcote, said: “It is just not acceptable and we are not going to take it anymore. I have had staff mugged outside my office and clients mugged down the road. We have had runners mugged for their takkies – oneguyneeded20stitches. We all need to stand together against lowlifes who prey on innocent, hardworking and giving people.” Henderson said that the protest was a great success, with people coming out in numbers to support the cause, despite the heavy rain. “The spirit was

HE recent rape of the doctor in Clarendon, Malema saying he wants Indians out of his country, fraud and corruption, spiralling crime and murders on the increase – corrupt government officials are but a blatant reality check of what one has to endure in our new South Africa. Sadly, women and children have to bear the brunt of a society gone mad. Governmentseemsuninterestedintherepercussions of all these heinous atrocities. Where and when do we stand up as a nation and say, enough is enough. The police can only do so much. I know many policemen out there who risk their lives daily, but who cares? I applaud the community who stood up around Clarendon and have taken measures to

The basic definitions/requirements of a virus is that it replicates itself, and that it installs onto your system as well as modify your system without user consent. n its basic form, it is a program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes. A simple virus that can make a copy of itself over and over again is relatively easy to produce. Even such a simple virus is dangerous because it will quickly use all available memory and bring the system to a halt. An even more dangerous type of virus is one capable of transmitting itself across networks and bypassing security systems. Since 1987, when a virus infected ARPANET, a large network used by the defense department and many universities, many antivirus programs have become available. These programs periodically check your computer system for the best–known types of viruses. A common myth is that viruses only infect Windows based computer systems. This is untrue, however the majority of viruses have been written for Windows systems. This is purely due to the fact that the majority of PC market uses the Windows Operating System.

THE Pietermaritzburg and District Cerebral Palsy Association (CPA) will be hosting a Golf Day on 6 December at Sakabula Golf Club. The CPA relies very heavily on Lotto for annual funds which it has not receivedthisyear,resultinginaverydifficult financial situation, to the point where CPA could face closure of its

clinic and school at the end of January. The organization is appealing to businesses to sponsor holes at the golf day, and participate in order to alleviate its funding crisis. Each hole costs R1 500 and comes with a four ball and four banners per hole. “We are hoping that fundraising will assist the CPA to remain open long enough to bridge the gap between now

Vilakazi said that over the years, there has been an increasing demand, both locally and internationally. “Years back we use to struggle to even reach 14 000. We limit the number to 18 000 runners so that we are able to monitor them. Once we reach18000,noone will be allowed to register for next year’s marathon. For those who are interested, they should

REAMS of competing like a ‘pro’ golfer, and raising the winning trophy in the 19th Amateur World Golfers Championship, came true for a local golfer. Team SA2, which includes PMB golfer Ajith Ghareeb, finished in a

proud third place out of 26 competing countries at the World Final. Ghareeb also finished 10th in his individual 21–25 flighting division. Founded by the late sporting icon Sven Tumba, and supported by the patronage of world–class golfers

Arnold Palmer, the late Severiano Ballesteros and Annika Sorenstam, World Golfers Championship is the world’s largest amateur golf tournament. It gives amateurs the unique opportunity of experiencing the thrill of

PIC Karting in Mkondeni hosted its first Skytrack Cup recently with great success and support from the Pietermaritzburg community. OverSeptemberandOctober, anyone could go to either Epic Karting Galleria or Epic Karting PMB and qualify by getting their fastest lap time on the board. At the end of this qualifying period, the top 12 from each venue were invited to compete in the Skytrack Cup at Epic Karting in Pietermaritzburg, the first double level indoor kart track in South Africa. “The 24 racers were awarded points through their qualifying position, and were broken up into heats, with four drivers ineachheat.The twist was that the more points you had, the further back in the heat you started, with drivers being

spaced by 20 meters on the start grid. What resulted was fantastic racing with the fastest drivers having to come from behind to get maximum points for winning and getting the fastest lap,” said Tom MartensofEpic Karting.

Martens said that there were standout drives in nearly every race, but the overall winner was Hayden Keating. “In each of his heats, as well as his semi–final,hewentfromlasttofirst.He alsosetfastestlapineveryracehecompeted in, shattering the lap records in the final by over three tenths of a second.” Second overall was Clyde Mcree, beating Garren Commins in third. Veolin Padayachee was the most consistent through the day and finished just off the podium in fourth place. “We feel that as a first run of a new race format it went very positively. The list of improvements for the next running is already getting long. We hope to run the next round of the cup early next year,” Martens said.
