East Coast Radio recently delivered toys to the paediatric wards at three hospitals in the city as part of their Toy Story 2013 project. The annual initiative, launched in September, encouraged members of the public to donate new toys which are handed out to children at government hospitals, crèches, orphanages and child–headed households around the province. They can only prevent the driver from locking it.”
He added that it is important for membersofthepublictoworktogether with the police. The SAPS provides Safe City, each day, with a very comprehensive reportregardingtheprevious24–hours reported crime. So if victims report crime to the SAPS then we will know about it. It also helps us to determine hotspots which then need additional monitoring,” said Holtzhausen.
Aubrina Esther House recently held a Delectable Ladies Breakfast fundraising event at the Redlands Hotel. Over 50 ladies from Pietermaritzburg and Durban came through to support the event. The organizers managed to raise R4 700 from the lucky draw. Guests were treated to talks from various women, with keynote speaker Iris Francis travelling from Johannesburg to motivte the audience. HE financial position of the Child and Family Welfare society in Pietermaritzburg remains precarious, according to director Julie Todd. On 21 November 2012, Maritzburg Fever ran an article stating that the future of Child Welfare was uncertain as a result of decreased sponsorships and funding, and in order to remainopenwouldberelyingonitsreservefunds to do so until the end of December 2013. A year later, Todd said that the organization has depleted all of its reserves. “However due to staff cutbacks and project downsizing, we were able to extend our life as an organisation until the of end March 2014,” she said. Todd added that money from the National Lottery was received as the organization had applied early and were assessed early. However, only half of the requested amount was received and this will allow the organization to operate as they currently are until
August 2014. “Basically we are living hand to mouth and so times remain hard. We have no reserve capital and this is not unique to us. The entire NPO sector is struggling. But the children’s sector and those societies rendering the bulk of statutory services really struggle, as government continue to not pay for statutory services, ratherchoosingtosubsidise, whichisnotcompliant with the legislation,” said Todd. She said that because subsidy payments are paid in arrears, the date of payment cannot always be relied upon. This issue is under review by the Department of Social Development. If resolved, it would help the cash flow of NPOs but does not alleviate the financial crisis they continue to face. “Over the holiday period, the need for material relief for families increases and we have no budget for this. We have no budget for holiday programmes to keep children who would otherwise be out on the streets. Every little donation helps, whether cash or in kind,” said Todd. Empowering the youth NQOBILE MTOLO
>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za A PIETERMARITZBURG based community outreach organisation, Zero 1, Zero 2, is on a mission to empower young people in Pietermaritzburg so that have enough stamina to tackle unemployment and also live a life free from social ills. Although the company only started this year, Zero 1, Zero 2 founders Sipho Khomo and Sanele Ngcobo have established a profound rapport with local residents. The pair recently hosted a women’s empowerment event which dealt with the daily challenges faced by women in society. “We strongly believe that challenges which people encounter everyday, such as unemployment and marital problems, can be overcome. For the women’s event, we designed the programme according to the challenges that women face in their daily lives. A lot of women are breadwinners and they have a lot of pressure to do well. The workshop gives them space to breathe and enjoy the company of other wom-
en,” said Ngcobo. Khomo said that their main target market is youthlivingintownships, ruralareas, especially those who are unemployed. “There are a lot of people in Pietermaritzburg who have tertiary qualifications but they have been unemployed for years. We help them to realize their purpose and help to train them spiritually so that they are able to see opportunities around them. Through our workshops, we show people that being religious is not boring,” said Khomo. With their slogan entitled ‘Sakha umuntu kumuntu’ [we empower people through people], Ngcobo believes that the more people they empower, the more leaders Pietermaritzburg will have. “People cannot blame the past for current circumstances. Young people have enough power to make a change, a change that will see the creation of more jobs and less crime,” said Ngcobo. If you would like to be part of Zero 1, Zero 2, contact the organisation at 071 079 2921 or at 033 342 558.

HE total debt owed to KZN municipalities by the end of the 2012/13 financial year fourth quarter was R11,2 billion. The main culprits are the private sector, provincial and national government departments and ordinary consumers. Addressing the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) gathering which was held in Durban recently, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu said that this debt cripples service delivery. “EThekwini had the highest outstandingdebtofR5,5billion,followed
by uMgungundlovu with R2 billion, of which R1,5 billion relates to debt owing to the Msunduzi Municipality. Sisonke recorded the lowest amountofoutstandingdebtofR159,3 million. This is followed by debtors classified as business at R2,5 billion and government at R697.9 million. UMgungundlovu and uThukela Districts had significant amounts of debt owed to them by government, totalling R320,2 million,”
stated Mchunu. Democratic Alliance (DA) provincial spokesperson Sizwe Mchunu said that this was an issue which the DA has been vocal about, but that nothing has been done. “The debt cripples the financial well–being of the municipalities and compromises service delivery. To an extent, the municipalities are lenient when it comes to recovering the money from government departments. This needs a hands–on approach. Hopefullytherewillbeaclearsolution for this,” said Sizwe. Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) spokesperson on Co–operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Peter Smith, said that this is a major

TALKING TOURISM DUMISANI MHLONGO: DIRECTOR OF THE MSUNDUZI PIETERMARITZBURG TOURISM ASSOCIATION
Heritage, events and business remain our Pietermaritzburg tourism draw card DUMISANI MHLONGO
L
AST month, I attended the annual World Travel Market at ExCel London. This leading global event for the travel industry is the must–attend four day business– to–business exhibition for the worldwide travel and tourism industry. This year, it took place between 4 and 7 November. The first three days, according to re-
view report, experienced an impressive overall delegate increase of five percent, covering increases in all major delegate categories. Invite–onlyvisitorattendancewasup12%on last year’s event to almost 9 000 from 8 916. Scheduled events included responsible tourism and heritage, travel technology – latest trends, bridging the gap between tourism and aviation policies, why cities will drive tourism success and sports tourism – trends and impact.
Europe remains the major source market for South Africa. January to February 2013 is up by six percent compared to the same period in 2012. India is among the top five tourism source markets for South Africa, followed by China, as it was revealed earlier this year. Inbound tourism from these countries has grown substantially in the recent years. Meeting outbound tour operators from those countries was a priority.
Side meetings with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, SA Tourism, the KZN Department of Economic Development, Ezemvelo Wildlife and Durban Tourism added value to the attendance of the show. Heritage, events and business remain our tourism draw card to the city. The latest statistics of KZN Tourism show that Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Zululand are the most popular destinations.

IETERMARITZBURG film maker from Esigodini, Mondli Makhaye, believes that you do not have to relocate to big cities like Johannesburg or Cape Town in order to make it big in the local film industry. Makhaye is the film director, producer and actor in his first film called Izinyembezi Zabesifazane (Women’s Tears). Izinyembezi Zabesifazane highlightsthehardshipsthatSouthAfrican women from underprivileged backgrounds experience, and it was shot from April to July last year. The film was shot in different parts of the Greater Edendale area. Makhaye and his team handle their own promotion campaigns and so far, they have successfully sold about 600 copies. The film is one hour and 15 minutes in length.
“We do our own self promotions and we engage more with the public so thattheviewerscaninteractwiththeir favourite actors in this film. We have worked very hard to make sure that this film becomes a reality. Pietermaritzburgisoozingwithtalentandit’sabouttimethatpeoplerealize that one does not necessarily have to relocate to big cities in order to get a break in the film industry,” said Makhaye. He said that the revenue generated from selling the DVDs is used to support his actors and production team of 25 members with food, transport fare and pocket money. Each copy sells for R30. One of the main acts, Nonhlanhla Bhengu, who plays the part of ‘Lunga’ in the film, said that embracing local talent will create job opportunities for local citizens. Bhengu is also a vocal artist and has worked with internationally acclaimed recording label,

Soul Candy. “To make it in life, we need to support each other,” she said. Nokuthula Dlalisa, who plays the role of ‘Zama’, said that the film also highlights the impact of the economy on the unemployment rate. “A lot of people are desperate to get jobs and would do almost anything to land a job. In the film, we see a serial rapist and murderer who targets women who are job seekers. At the very end, justice is fulfilled,” said Dlalisa. Makhaye said that they did experience financial difficulties as they did not have any financial support and would appreciate any help. “The best is yet to come, this is just the beginning. My dream is to see our actors making it big in local television soapie and drama series such as Generations and Isibaya. When that happens, I will know that I have fulfilled my purpose in life,” said Makhaye.
SABELO Nene (23), Viceroy’s Makoya Mix winner, will be performing at Tiger Tiger on 28 November. Pietermaritzburg’s DJ Sabza, as he is known in the music industry, won the battle of the DJ’s competition this year and with it, a R100 000 recording contract. His album is already available in music stores in the city and the official launch will be at Cocoa Lagoon on 13 December. PHOTO: NICOLE JOHN
Childhood lead exposure contributes to intellectual disabilities LEAD poisoning poses a major risk to childhood development. This was the main message during the international Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action. groundWork, Friends of the Earth South Africa in Pietermaritzburg, stressed that the public needs to be made aware of lead poisoning, its harmful effects and the severe impact on children. “Paints containing high levels of lead are still widely available and used in many countries for decorative purposes,
although good substitutes without lead are available,” said Rico Euripidou, groundwork researcher and environmental health campaigner. According to groundWork, although lead poisoning is preventable, exposure to the heavy metal is estimated to account for 0.6% of the global burden of disease, with the highest burden in developing regions like South Africa. Childhood lead exposure is estimated to contribute to about 600 000 new cases

of children with intellectual disabilities every year. In spite of action taken against this problem, it remains of key concern to health care providers and public health officials worldwide. “Research shows that lead poisoning in children has been linked to lowered intelligence scores, hearing loss, hyperactivity, shortened concentration spans and general poor school performance. Malaria warning
>> South Africans are not aware of how much danger malaria can pose
W
ITH the holiday season around the corner, Netcare doctors are urging holiday makers to be more vigilant and aware oftheeffectsofmalaria, apotentiallylife threatening disease. According to Dr Pete Vincent of Netcare Travel Clinics and Tokai Medicross Family and Dental Clinic, many South Africans are not aware of how much danger malaria can pose. “Families visiting places such as the northern parts of South Africa, or other countries in southern Africa such as Mozambique, over the festive season should be particularly careful to protect themselves. Some of these regions have experienced good rains fairly early in the season and consequently have large numbers of malaria–carrying mosquitoespresent.Beawarethatchildrenunder the age of five and pregnant women should avoid malaria areas altogether,” said Vincent.
Dr Anchen Laubscher, medical director of Netcare, said that the number of malaria cases at Netcare hospitals peaked at 101 in January 2013, when people returned from holiday. Living away from non–malaria areas in excess of six months, causes people to lose their passive–immunity to the illness which results in them contracting it. Vincent said that countries such as Mozambique, Malawi, the DRC, Sudan and Uganda have high rates of malaria, and individuals travelling to these countries should be particularly vigilant. The disease is also found in parts ofZimbabweandBotswana, andnorthern Angola and Namibia. It is also very prevalent in West African countries such as Nigeria. Those who intend heading home after an extended stay should visit their travel clinic prior to travelling. “We are at present seeing quite large
numbersofreturningNigerianworkers with malaria. Many people are not taking the threat seriously enough,” said Vincent. InSouthAfrica, malarianowonlyremains endemic in Venda. However, anyone who intends on visiting Mpumalanga or Limpopo during the local malaria season, September to April, should visit a travel clinic to take the necessary precautions against the disease. Keep an eye out for the symptoms of malaria. Although malaria usually presents with flu–like symptoms, it can also initially express itself in many different ways. The first symptoms in adults may include weakness, lethargy and dizziness, fever and sweats, muscular and abdominal pains, vomiting and diarrhea. “Do everything possible to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes,” warns Vincent. – Supplied

High standard of Hilton matric art
Every year, the staff and children at Ridge Junior Primary School participate in a pet food collection for the SPCA. The children were very excited and proud about their contributions of tin food, pellets and even cat litter for the less fortunate animals. The organisation relies totally on generous donations such as these to continue their work in the prevention of cruelty to animals. This enormous pet food collection was handed over to the SPCA fundraiser Angela Hodgson at a special assembly (from left) Sasha James, Angela Hodgson, Jandré van Huyssteen, Bulelwa Kumalo, Donalie Boshoff, Mieke Koekemoer and Olivia Henning.
The Hilton College matric art exhibition was recently opened by artist Sue Martin, who commented on the very high standard of work on display. She congratulated the matric artists and said she was touched when reading their write–ups on each piece, as it reflected them as artists, and described deeply moving experiences. A sad farewell to Isibindi >> Russell High pupils and their art teacher tasked with decorating a replica of a black rhino for King Shaka airport NICOLE JOHN

M
IXED emotions filled the air at Russell High School when the time came for them to part with their beloved rhino,
Isibindi. Pupils in the art department at the school, under the guidance of art teacher Alana Leigh, were tasked by the Wildlands Conservation Trust to decorate a replica of a black rhino to be displayed at King Shaka International Airport. The rhino would serve as a reminder of the rapid rate at which rhino are being poached and killed in South Africa. ThegirlsbegantheirtaskinJulythisyear, and have worked long and hard to adorn the rhino with symbolic representations which honour the game rangers and other people who risk their lives to save the rhinos. Principal, Jean Rose, said that there have been countless hours put into this project, including weekends, afternoons and after hour work from both teachers and pupils alike.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
Pictured standing proudly with Isibindi are (from left) principal Jean Rose and art teacher Alana Leigh.
The design was developed by Peaceful Khumalo. Fondly named, Isibindi meaning courage, the rhino has been decorated with recycled materials including shattered glass, cans and teabags and includes an artistic interpretation of King Shaka’s necklace and medals of bravery. Khumalo said that she is happy to see the end product of their hard work, but that letting go of their much loved rhino is heartbreaking. “We don’t want her to go, we have spent so much time with her.” Some of the other girls shared the same feelings saying that it had become a habit to work on the rhino in their spare time. Moira Potter of Russell High School said that all credit for Isibindi goes to Leigh and her team of enthusiastic art pupils. “Without her, none of this would be possible, she inspires and directs the girls.” Isibindi was recently revealed at her new home at the airport in Durban. Notice of Application for a Waste Management Licence An application for a Waste Management Licence in terms of the National Environmental Management Waste Act (2008) has been lodged with the National Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA). The proposed activity has been downgraded from a Scoping and EIA and will therefore be subjected to a Basic Assessment process. All interested and affected parties (I and APs) are invited to register with the contact person below within 14 days of this notice. The applicant, E-Waste Africa, proposes to install a Lamp Recycling Plant at 102 Shortts Retreat in Mkondeni, Pietermaritzburg. The plant will be used to recycle fluorescent light bulbs, allowing for the recovery of the plastic, glass, metal and mercury from the bulbs so that these elements can be recycled once separated. These components will then be sold off to recyclers. The bulbs, which contain small amounts of mercury, will be temporarily stored on site prior to being processed through the plant. Up to 100 cu m of bulbs will be stored at any one time and between 1 and 5 tons of waste will be collected per day, which will be processed as it arrives. Swimchix swimathon >> There were 150 swimmers of all ages doing their personal best to swim as many lengths as they could for cancer NICOLE JOHN

S
WIMCHIX recently hosted a swimathon and raised R70 000 for the Pink Drive Cancer charity. The Pink Drive campaign specifically focuses on the fight against cancer. It funds mobile clinics that are able to access remote and underprivileged areas in South Africa, and offers education and testing to those who are in need. The focus is on self examinations and mammograms as well as prostate and testicular cancer in men. There were 150 swimmers of all ages doing their personal best to swim as many lengths as they could in 30 minutes. A total of 4312 lengths were swum. “The sea of pink caps in the pool was a special sight. It is totally incredible to see what can be achieved when people come together for something so positive. Their hard work in the water paid off and the swimathon was an overwhelming success,” said squad member Kath Boast. Boast made a special mention to Jerry Janse van Rensburg, Essence Café and SPAR for their generous donations. “Each person who swam can be very proud of their efforts, they made a difference,” she added. Boast and six other members of the Seals adult swim squad will be doing the 8–mile Aquelle Midmar Dam swim for the Pink drive in February next year.
The Seals Swimchix club raised R70 000 during their swimathon in aid of the Pink Drive Cancer charity.
TECH TALK
Carter pupil cycles the distance
LAST week I wrote about viruses (or virii) regarding their effects, purposes and definitions. This week we will be looking at computer worms. Computer worms are very similar to virii with the exception that they do not require existing files to infect. Worm are rather stand–alone programs that replicate themselves, thus removing a worm very rarely causes damage to system. Due to the stand–alone function, mixed with the self–replicating code, they tend to cause massive system performance loss before they have even achieved their end–result and original purpose. This performance loss is often caused by hard drive space mongering as well network traffic bloating. A worm will continue to replicate itself as much as possible on the local machine which eventually starts filling up the hard drive of the computer and denying space to any other programs. Due to the replication process constantly trying to push itself out over the network to infect additional machines, it also starts limiting network traffic, causing slow internet, emails and other network related actions. Worms in general are much easier to remove from a system (with a few exceptions) than viruses, however due to the speed at which they replicate, they are much harder to avoid. An example of this is the MyDoom worm which on 28 January, 2004 (a mere two days after discovery) was responsible for one in every five emails sent all around the world.
Carter High School pupil Brady Smith (L) competed in the Amashova Durban Classic, completing the race in three hours and 57 minutes. He is pictured being congratulated by headmaster, Ashwin Ramgoolam.

Local rider finishes ‘Roof’

P
IETERMARITZBURG rider, Travis Teasdale (16), recently finished theextremelytoughandchallenging three–day ‘Roof of Africa’ enduro race that took place in horrendous weather conditions in Lesotho. It was the 2013 junior national offroad champion’s first ‘Roof’ attempt, andaneventthatwillgodowninthehistory of the modern ‘Roof of Africa’ as a very wet and slippery race that not only tested the riders’ abilities and skills, but also their determination and perseverance. Teasdale, a Grace College student who competed for the first time for Team Brother Broadlink KTM, started daytwoinsixthplaceafterpostingafast time at the 45km time–trial. After six hours and 42 minutes on a wet saddle, he completed the day in 15th place overall – he injured his leg when he crashed, but the words ‘giving up’ are not in his
vocabulary and he pushed hard till the end. On the Saturday, the 120 odd kilometre route was changed somewhat duetotheincessantrain, buttheslippery rocks and muddy roads did not keep Teasdale back as he enjoyed the challenge. After racing for just over 10 hours on Saturday, Teasdale received the chequered flag as a signal that he had finished his first ‘Roof of Africa’ and he isalreadylookingforwardtomanymore. Histotalracetimeforthethreedays, was 18 hours and just over 14 minutes. Teasdale was in the company of someoftheworld’sbestextremeenduro riders, with UK rider Graham Jarvis taking victory for the second time while the Kiwi, Chris Birch, who lived and raced in South Africa for two years and coached the youngsters, finished second. Teasdale’s teammate Scott Bouverie was third.
