AST week Tuesday, Msunduzi municipal security guards uncovered dagga with a street value of R16 000 while doing patrols in the Jika Joe informal settlement. Police spokesperson, Colonel Jay Naicker, said that the 20–year–old suspectwastakentotheSAPSPietermaritzburg Police Station, where he was arrested and detained. Naicker said that the suspect will make a court appearance soon.
“The SAPS Pietermaritzburg detectives’ services are investigating a case of possession of dagga. At about midday, two municipal security guards were doing foot patrols in the Jika Joe informal settlement when they came across a shack where three men were sitting and folding newspaper parcels. Upon noticing the guards, two of the men got up and fled,” said Naicker. He said that the other suspect was subsequently apprehended. Naicker said that the municipal security guards found various plastic bags of dagga which weighed approxi-
mately 8,2 kg, with a street value of approximately R16 000. “Two Samsung cellphones and a Nokia cellphone were found in the suspect’s possession. Investigations continue,” said Naicker. Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma applauded the arrest by municipal security officers. “We need vigilance in the enforcement of the law so that the safety of the public is guaranteed. Intake of drugs leads to unlawful behaviour, therefore the arrest is highly commendable,” he said.

Two swift arrests for cops TWO suspects have been arrested in connection with a double hijacking, shooting and robbery that took place in the city last week. Last Friday morning, members of the SAPS Pietermaritzburg Tracking Team made a breakthrough in the investigation of the two cases. Police arrested the first suspect, a 21–year–old male, at a shop in Pietermaritz Street. That afternoon, they arrested the second suspect, also aged 21, in the St. Chads area in Ladysmith. On 27 November, police responded to a report of a shooting along Prince Alfred Street. Upon their arrival, the body of Sandile Hadebe (36) was found lying on the ground outside his house. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the back. Police believe that Hadebe was returning home from work and was confronted by two unknown men, one yielding a firearm, as he was opening the gate to his home. The men demanded the keys to his vehicle, however an altercation ensued and it is believed that Hadebe threw the keys away from him. The armed suspect then shot Hadebe in the back, fatally wounding him. The suspects unsuccessfully tried to push the
vehicle onto the road and then fled on foot. A resident saw the suspects and contacted the police. Within an hour of this incident, police received another call about a shooting along Watt Lane and when they arrived, found Bongani Mthethwa (37) lying on the side of the road. He sustained a gunshot wound to his stomach and was transported to a hospital outside the city when he is in a stable condition. It is believed Mthethwa and a friend were sitting in his car when they were confronted by two unknown men, one armed with a firearm. It is alleged that the suspects forced them out of the car and demanded the keys. Itisfurtherallegedthatwhen Mthethwa handed over the keys, the armed suspect fired a shot, hitting Mthethwa in the stomach. Both suspects then got into the vehicle and fled. The suspects were then spotted in the Northdale area and abandoned the car and fled into the nearby bushes when they noticed the police. Police believe that the two incidents may be linked. The suspects have been charged with the murder and attempted robbery of Hadebe and will be back in court on December 10. – Supplied.

Mall parking upgrade
NICOLE JOHN
>>nicole@pmbfever.co.za THERE has been a lot of activity at the Liberty Midlands Mall during the current upgrade to the entrances, the first phase of which is set to be complete before the festive season rush. “Liberty Midlands Mall recognized that improvements needed to be made to the Sanctuary Road entrance to the mall, in order to reduce the congestion that is sometimes experienced at the entrance and exit
of the parking facilities,” said mall manager, Umi Khan. The project involves an investment of R4.2 million by the Liberty Group and will take place in two phases. Phase one is currently underway, and is aimed at redirecting the traffic flows in the parking area from the third entrance towards the Dischem store side. Traffic markings, signs, curbs, bollards and traffic directional flows are being changed in order toalleviatethebottleneckcausedinthatarea.

“This phase will be completed in early December, barring any delays caused by exceptionally bad weather” said Khan. The second phase will begin in mid–January, and will be aimed at easing the traffic flow towards Chase Valley. This is expected to be completed by April 2014. “We have put traffic control in place, however we appeal to our shoppers to please be patient whilst these improvements are made. We look forward to better flowing traffic,” said Khan. Along with the R380 million phase three
upgrade to the mall, set to begin in early 2014, a new parking system will be introduced as well. The decision to introduce paid parking at the mall follows the trend in the Pietermaritzburg area, and is in line with many major centres across the country. There will be 20 minutes free parking to accommodate those dropping in to the centre to run a brief errand. Those who stay longer will have to pay the parking rates. There will be no differentiation between the open and undercover parking.

without the support of the entire team of managers, waiters and kitchen staff, this achievement would not have been possible,” said owner Sue Malherbe. The KZN Cafe Society was established by two coffee lovers, Ingrid Shelvin and Ralph Bronzin, 14 years ago and the idea of a cappuccino competition was born to raise the standards of coffee in the province. With generous financial backing from Illovo, over the years the competition has achieved its goal, with some of the country’s best coffee and most talented baristas coming from KwaZulu–Natal. Each year, a panel of mystery judges visit coffee shops in Durban and the surrounding areas, South Coast and Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands, in a quest to find the best cappuccinos on offer. The top 100 establishments are then reviewed in a handy coffee guide where the top 10 finalists in Durban, the top five finalists on the South Coast and the top five in Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands are announced. Coffeeberry Cafe has been one of the many establishments that have benefitted from the KZN Cafe Society’s influence on local coffee culture over the years. “We received our first review from their mystery judge only two days after opening our doors in 2005. The judge commented that the coffee on day two of opening already proved to be one of the better coffees in town and that if this was only the start, we were going to be a success,” said Malherbe. Onlyin2007didCoffeeberrymakeitintothe finals and by 2009, had become serious contenders in the coffee scene when they won the Best Cappuccino award for the first time. Since then, they have been consistent top five finalists in the Cafe Society competition. “Our success has been underpinned by the support that we have received from our supplier, Bruce Manning from Tribeca, who provides ongoing training along with technical and product support,” Malherbe said. – Supplied

Clash over music festival NQOBILE MTOLO
>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za
MSUNDUZI Municipality Executive Committee (Exco) members clashed again last week, over whether or not the municipality should financially support the UkhoziFM event to be staged in the city. Maritzburg Fever first reported on a clash which occurred recently amongst Exco members on whether or not the municipality should financially support a gospel music festival to the value of R90 000. The organizer of the event, Big Fish Music, had approached the municipality for financial support as it was planning to run public awareness campaigns on HIV/AIDS during the event. Last week, Democratic Alliance (DA) memberMerganChettyquestionedwhycouncil now has to pay R1,1 million to support Ukhozifm Nyus’ivolume music festival which is due to take place in December in the city. Ukhozifm Nyus’ivolume is a summer campaign which aims to spread the word among the youth of being more responsible over the festive season, while still enjoying themselves. Both Chetty and DA’s Msunduzi caucus leader Bill Lambert, questioned why the municipality has to support the event when there are streetlights that need to be fixed and grassneedingtobecutinotherpartsofthecity. “We have to do what we were elected to do. We should be more responsible and people should get value for their money,” said Chetty. “If we had that kind of money I would say let’s do it. But we don’t,” said Lambert. National Freedom Party (NFP) member Ntokozo Bhengu supported the event, but requested that the amount be adjusted. “I understand that the event will market the city and many people will attend, however R1,1 million is a lot of money to be paid out,” said Bhengu. Acting deputy municipal manager for community services, Nomonde Gwabeni, said that the event will help to change the image of the city as it will help showcase what the municipality has achieved. Municipal manager’s representative, Skhumbuzo Mpanza, said that service delivery has qualitative and quantitative means. He said that Ukhozifm has a major influence on the population of Pietermaritzburg and advised that the amount be reduced.

CHOOLS close today and with that, the festive season officially begins. No more traffic to contend with, fetching children from school or attending sports and other extra– curricular activities. Children all over are excited to begin their December holidays, and put the year of hard work behind them as they look forward to enjoying time at home. Maritzburg Fever spoke to a few pupils at Gateway Christian School who have completed their final year of primary education. Mixed emotions filled the air at their final assembly as they bid farewell to their teachers and friends who they have shared the past seven years with. “I am ecstatic about the new challenges that face me next year. I can’t wait to meet new people and make new friends,” said Bongeka Sokhela. Excited about entering into a new phase in her life and being treated as a young lady and no longer a “little girl”, Nomvelo Zuma said that she feels mature enough now to know how to handle herself at high school. The boys also shared the same sentiments. Luwazi Philison said entering

Project co–ordinator Juanita Chitepo, said that initially, the project was only aimed at pupils in school, however they realized that by educating teachers on the benefits of the project, it will have a lasting effect and a wider reach. “I divided the workshop into three parts; firstly theory which they can take away with them and read at their leisure, secondly I taught them about the effects the right brain has on reading and writing and lastly I taught them how to transfer the knowledge to the students,” said Chipeto. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Zandile Zitha a Grade six teacher at Panorama Primary School, said that she found the workshop very interesting and informative. Another local teacher from Glenwood Primary, Lungile Zondi, echoed Zitha’s sentiments. “This workshop has been very informative. I just wish it could have been more than one day then I would be able to learn more,” she said.

If I am not involved in politics at a public office, then I see myself at an NGO helping other people. Q: What would you like people to remember you for? A: My humility. Playing their part in taking care of the environment, each St Nicholas primary grade successfully adopted a spot within the school where they could grow vegetables or other forms of plantation. This was a joint effort from pupils and teachers as they had to ensure that their gardens were well looked after. Pictured is an example of what has been growing in some of the beautiful gardens. The pupils have since enjoyed making salads and delicious meals from their very own plantations (from left) Andile Mpanza, Luyanda Lamula, Sne Mlaba and Andile Dlamini.

USINESS World, in partnership with Gift of the Givers, distributed shoes to a few public schools in Pietermaritzburg recently. Stacey Francis, Business World CEO, said that it was pure fate that led her to a member of an organization, who requested to remain anonymous, which donated the shoes to her. EastwoodHigh,AlstonPrimaryand Russell High schools were the first
recipients in Pietermaritzburg of the new shoes. “We will be distributing a total of 20 000 shoes to schools within KZN which includes Pietermaritzburg, Richmond and Durban,” said Francis. She said that ideally, they would like to give pupils one pair of shoes every sixmonths. MaritzburgFeverwasable totravelwiththeteamandwaspresent at the handovers. The excitement and joy the pupils showed, particularly at Alston Primary School, was overwhelming.
“The Gift of the Givers have partnered with us and we are truly blessed to have them on board. LAW CORNER What is a will and why do I need one? BY MARGARET MCCULLOUGH A WILL is a legal document which contains the wishes of the person making it. Any person of 16 years or older, and provided they are mentally capable of appreciating the nature and effect of the contents, may make a will. A will is the only way in which a person can ensure that their estate will be divided according to their wishes after their death. Dying without a will has major implications for both the administrationoftheestateaswellasthefamily left behind. If there is no valid willat the time of death, the estate will simply be inherited according to intestate rules. These rules can be both impractical and inflexible.Assetscannotbedistributed until all the rules regarding intestate succession have been adhered to, which can lead to delays and extra costs. If there is no will, and the value of the estate is more than R125 000, the MasteroftheHighCourtcouldconvene a meeting of family members in order to appoint an executor, but in practise, other methods of nominating an executor are often used. During this time, the estate is frozen while it is being wound up, and dependant heirs may not have access to funds during this time. The Master may also require the executor to provide security. TECH TALK
CONTINUING with my theme of virii and other harmful software, I will be looking at Trojan Horses this week. Most of you are familiar with the story of the Trojan Horse, where the Greeks built a wooden statue of a horse and presented it to the Trojans as a peace offering and a war trophy. Inside the horse, however, they had hidden a small group of soldiers who under the cover of night, slipped out of the statue and opened the gates for the rest of the Greeks, allowing them access to the city of Troy. Trojan Horse Sofware follows the same path. Iit is most often disguised as a normal program offered to you freely, butonceinstalleditcandegradetheintegrityofthesystemandtherefore allow more harmful software to transfer over. The most common effect of Trojans, however, is the installation of spyware and remote access/ control applets. Trojans also do not classify as viruses (virii) due to the fact that they are not self–replicating, however as of 2009, are responsible for over 80% of malware infections worldwide. This is due to a concept called botnets which I will discuss in next week’s article. Even though Trojans are not self–replicating, most infections are caused by othermalware, mostlycomputerworms, accessingandinstallingthem. Antivirus applications such as ESET NOD32 can remove infections like these before they get out of hand.

The buzz around the Bin Five of the 2013 UKZN Impi side working with former All Blacks head coach John Mitchell (third from left) at camp on the Pietermaritzburg campus are (from left) Wayne Le Roux, Sanele Malwane, Sanele Mweli, Andre Greyvenstein and Zwela Zondi. PHOTO: JONATHAN BURTON
>> The new UKZN Impi head coach is working with hopefuls over four camps heading into the new Varsity Shield season JONATHAN COOK
T
HE impetus of former All Blacks head coach John Mitchell is creating its own momentum. The new UKZN Impi head coach, and his battery of highly regarded assistants, are working with the hopefuls over four camps heading into the new Varsity Shield season. New Zealander Mitchell, who was assistant coach of Sir Clive Woodward’s 2003 Rugby World Cup winning side in Australia, also steered the then newly formed Perth–based franchise the Western Force through the choppy waters of the Super Rugby competition. He also more recently piloted Johannesburg–based team the Golden Lions to victory over the Sharks in the Currie Cup final. “Mitch” clearly relishes a challenge. NowlivinginDurbanandcommentating on SuperSport, Mitch, whose roots are in club rugby – he played for Waikato for 11 years – has sparked massive interest in Cinderella rugby university UKZN with his astonishing
decision to accept the post of head of rugby, and has gathered around him a stellar cast of Impi assistant coaches. Mitch’s knowledge will brush off on these men and thereby contribute much to the PMB rugby community at school level. Apart from Merchiston and MaritzburgCollegeproduct,2007RWC–winning flyhalf Butch James who wants to put something back into a city that has given him so much, Mitch has brought in Maritzburg College and Michaelhouse directors of rugby Ryan Strudwick and Ryno Combrinck, young Pelham Primary director of sport and highly regarded rugby coach Dylan Campbell, as well as – on a KZN club level – Voortrekker head of rugby Shawn van Rensburg (forwards coach) and Nic Haswell to oversee the growth of the sport. Biokineticist Bryce Jackson and head of player recruitment Shane le Breton, both Maritzburg College products, and local detective Wayne le Roux, the Impi manager, are also integral members of the brains trust. The evening buzz around Frans Vorster’s Sin Bin Pub and Restaurant,
the newly revamped social focal point of UKZN Maritzburg Rugby Club at the Peter Booysen Sports Park rugby stadium off Golf Road in Scottsville, has been exciting to witness this week. Thiswasattheconclusionofaday’s training at the first of four camps engineered by the meticulous Mitch, as the likes of Wayne le Roux, Sanele Malwane, Sanele Mweli, Andre Greyvenstein and Zwela Zondi work out in the hope of being included in the final UKZN Impi squad that will contest the 2014 Varsity Shield season, which kicks off at the end of January. Mitch’s weekly work blocks focus on correct preparation, team culture, individual belonging, improved continuity and professional standards – all keys to match–winning performance. Among primary areas of focus are gym work (upper body and legs), speed and agility, dietary requirements and the all–important aspects of teamwork. And what would rugby be without the team braai? It promises to be a fascinating season.
Connecting with nature through hiking NQOBILE MTOLO
>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za A GROUP of friends who have been hiking the Pietermaritzburg and Midlands reserves for the past three years, are calling for Pietermaritzburg residents to join them during the Mkhambathini Table Mountain hiking trail on 8 December. The Mkhambathini Table Mountain hiking trail takes about three hours to complete. One of the organizers, Nhlaka Mdunge, said that the hiking experience will enable a more personal connection with nature as there are a lot of tourist attractions on site. “We started hiking in 2010 and we really enjoyed it. People’s lives are consumed with stress and going

Busy schedules mean that many people do not get time for physical exercises so for those people, webelievethathiking will be an added, healthier activity which we hope they will continue doing in the future. We really had an
amazing experience and this time around, wewantthepublictobepart of this adventure,” said Mdunge. Mdunge said that another objective is to expose the public to beautiful landmarks and tourist attractions. “If you stand right at the top of Table Mountain, you see the whole of Pietermaritzburg.
