No more beds for visitors >> There is not a single room available in the city for the weekend which hosts the Comrades, the Royal Show and more NICOLE JOHN
>>nicole@pmbfever.co.za
T
HE first weekend in June each year attracts many different people to Pietermaritzburg; whether it is the arty fans, agricultural enthusiasts or the marathon runners. LastyearArtinthePark,TheRoyal Agricultural Show and the Comrades Marathon all took place over one weekend, which resulted in bed and breakfasts and hotels bursting at the seams. This year, the Maritzburg College reunion, Royal Agricultural Show and the Comrades Marathon will be taking place over the same weekend, with Art in the Park the weekend prior. “The accommodation situation is already under pressure. This influx of people over one weekend in the city doesn’t help anyone. Because we are
so full, many people have to go out of town for their accommodation needs,” said Dumisani Mhlongo, director of the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association (MPTA). Des Morgan, chairperson of the Midlands Bed and Breakfast Association (MidBaBa), said that many of the bed and breakfasts in the Midlands area are already booked out. “Some places are holding out for bookings for the Royal Show, which is more economically viable than one or two nights for the Comrades Marathon,” said Morgan. Morgan said that, after extensive research, there is not a single room available in the city for that weekend because there are so many people in need of accommodation. “We have reached a point where we are now referring people to the Camperdown, Cato Ridge and Hillcrest areas where there is accommodation available about halfway
between the start and the finish of the race,” he said. To help address this situation, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has launched Comrades Travel, its official travel and accommodation service provider. The aim is to ease the pressure on Comrades runners to find safe, reliable and affordable travel and accommodation catering for both local and international runners, with different packages available. “We understand that there are other similar service providers out there but none of which are endorsed by the CMA to officially cater for Comrades Marathon runners. The CMA aims to provide the running community with an all-round, cost-effective solution via a wide range of travel packages to suit our runners’ various needs,” said CMA general manager, Chris Bruwer. In response to the launch of
Comrades Travel, Morgan said that he welcomed the idea. He said that there was previously no problem when the Comrades Marathon was on 16 June. After the government decision in 2010 to move it to the Sunday before 16 June, some problems began surfacing. However now with the marathon on the first weekend in June, the problems have drastically increased because of all the other events taking place at the same time. Another form of alleviating the accommodation issues in the city is the introduction of home-stays, where people offer their homes to athletes and their families. However both MPTA and MidBaBaemphasizedthatthiscomes with its own challenges. “The key to successful home stays is that the people do it free of charge. If they charge people, they will need
to take out insurance to protect them from lawsuits should anything happentotheguestswhilestayingattheir home,” said Morgan. For Mhlongo, this brings about the issue of monitoring the opening of illegal bed and breakfasts which the Msunduzi Municipality and MPTA are trying to clamp down on. “We don’t want to encourage illegal bed and breakfast and if we do not do proper planning for home-stays, there is no way to manage this,” said Mhlongo. He referred to multiple events at the same time as cannibalism. “Events in the city are a big source of income but if we have a combination of events on at the same time, it is defeating the purpose.” Mhlongo said that he hoped as time went on, the organizers of various events would come together and work towards addressing these issues.

PEOPLE across the world remembered with love and affection those who they have lost, who are suffering and who continue to fight against the disease during World Cancer Day on 4 February. Msunduzi Hospice Association hosted a cancer awareness day for the public. There were talks and free blood pressure testing, blood sugar, cancer risk assessments and other health tests available for interested members of the public. The theme was ‘The truth about cancer: Myths, facts and realities.’ In a recent article in the Maritzburg Fever, Lisa Strydom, regional manager of the Cansa Associa tion, said that awareness is their primary goal this year. As much as people think they know about cancer, there is so much more to understand. At the event, she said that there was so much demand for Lifestyle Risk Assessment tests that more forms had to be printed to accommodate for the needs of people. The test assesses a person’s risk of getting can cer, depending on the lifestyle that they lead. These tests are available at the Cansa Association at 10 Killarney Terrance for a minimal fee. Warren OxfordHuggett, director of Msunduzi Hospice, said that he was grateful that various or ganizations had come to the event in an effort to raise awareness. He hoped that this interest in learning more about cancer continued.

Mayor Chris Ndlela said that if the municipality had spent 72% on its planned projects, then he would say that they had done a great job. “It is common knowledge that it is money that has already been spent but it is too high considering where we are in this current financial year,” said Ndlela. TAFF at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum made a startling discovery early recently when one of them found a pamphlet for
a traditional healer with exactly the same artwork as the entrance ticket used for visitors at the museum. Education Officer, Sakhile Maphumulo, found the pamphlet on the pavement while walking downtown. Noticing that the artwork was the same as the museum’s, he brought it with him back to work to do some investigating. Sandile Miya, deputy director, phoned the number advertised on the pamphlet and, after a few attempts, the man answered and denied knowing anything about the artwork. According to Miya, he blamed the printing company. Viranna Frank from the museum said that they engage with CPW Prints for the printing of their tickets and the company did not know anything about the copycat printer. “They are very reputable and would have brought this to our attention,” said Frank. Initially, the traditional healer gave an address in East Street to Miya, but when another staff member contacted him to make an appointment, he gave an address in Alexandra Road. Unsure of what to do, Frank contacted the Maritzburg Fever to make people aware of this.
Discounts on municipal bills NQOBILE MTOLO

IF you have outstanding municipal debt and are struggling to pay it off, the Msunduzi Municipality is still offering a 50% discount until 31 May this year. The project was introduced last year as
part of celebrating the city’s 175 years. For every R175 paid forward by the con sumers, they get an extra R175 off. The offer started last year September. “As part of the 175th celebrations, we were going to go on a rand for rand basis whereby for every R175 paid, customers were going to be given a discount of a similar amount of money. “That process will run until 31 May this year. The total number of people who have qualified for it to date is 2084 and the amount collected for the month of September was about R4,3 million,” said
municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi. Mayor Chris Ndlela urged residents to take advantage of the opportunity before it expires. Chief financial officer Nelisiwe Ngcobo said that the outstanding municipal debt was R1,5 billion last year August. “The debt is reducing but it is not reducing at a pace we want. OPULAR local graffiti artist Gasak, has touched down on American soil to begin his two month long peace and awareness campaign, Face the Peace. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Gasak said that this project has been in the making for over two years. Face the Peace is about promoting peace and awareness through art. “I will be visually attacking the biggest and most notorious criminal organization in the world by painting the faces of eight large scale international peace leaders on the walls of cartel territory to
bring peace and awareness to the drug war,” he said. The areas he will focus on are Juarez in Mexico and El Paso in Texas. “This border crossing is one of the highest drug trafficking routes in America, and Jaurez in Mexico has one of the highest crime rates worldwide. I will be painting four leaders in Juarez and the other four in El Paso. If you join these faces up geographically, it will form a heart over the border of these two cities,” said Gasak. He decided to embark on his peace awareness project after he was attacked in a club in Durban. He was trying to raise funds to buy spray paint and had set up a meet-

Deadly intersection needs robots EASTWOOD and Cinderella residents are desperate for the municipality to sort out the accident prone intersection at the corner of Bishopstowe and Staling Road. They are wondering what happened to the installation of robots project which was passed by council in 2012. The municipality approved that project, which would have seen the installation of traffic lights at a cost of R129 233,13. Various intersections, including the one at Bishopstowe/ Staling Road, were on the list. Other places include intersections at Archie Gumede/Reggie Hadebe and Gladys Manzi roads, Willowfontein/ Nozulu roads, Willowfontein Road/ Route9,KarelLandman/ReggieHadebe and Blaydon roads, Ohrtmann/Promed roads, Mysore/Bombay roads, Olympia Way/ Deccan Road and Ridge/New England roads. Eastwood Community Forum (ECF) chairperson Fred Wagner urged the municipality to act fast. “It’sbeen10yearssincewetriedtoget the municipality to install robots at the corner of Bishopstowe and Harriette Colenso Road. We approached the municipality when Hloni Zondi was still the mayor and we even took the matter to parliament and held demonstrations, but nothing happened,” said Wagner. Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma said that only four intersections are prioritised for installation of traffic signals before the end of June 2014. He said that this is due to the limited budget of R1 million. The four intersections are Archie Gumede/Reggie Hadebe/ Gladys Manzi Road, French/Barnsley Road, Mysore/ Bombay intersection and Bishopstowe/ Starling. “All other intersection are not part of the current financial year implementation plan. These will be considered in future,” said Zuma.

ing with a club owner to paint the club in return for a sponsorship towards paint. He was then pulled into an abandoned club and beaten up by eight foreign nationals. “They strip searched me and took my only valuable, which was my cellphone, and left my spray paint and sketch pad. I went to the main police station in Durban where an officer accused me of selling my phone for drugs,” he said. He added that he then wanted to get back at the ruthless criminal organizations and instead of doing it in South Africa, he wanted to focus on the heart of the drug war at the most notorious criminal
organizations in the world. “I want to make an impact and let my message be heard on an international platform. I plan to bring peace and awareness to the drug war through my graffiti and, if I’m able to change one persons life, then I know I have achieved what I came to do,” said Gasak. He will begin painting after his third week in America. “I still have meetings with the FBI and DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) about my safety and to track my every move as I am a threat to the cartels and anything can happen,” he said. I was much impressed with the woman checking tickets at the entrance. The combination of well defined biceps and a grenade-belt comforted me. When I told the ticket collector that I had no tag, she asked me to step out of the car, put my hands on the bonnet and answer questions about something called Die Stem. I did as she said but informed her rather curtly that I hadn’t much time to talk about wilting flower-parts. I then asked her to kindly release her meaty knee from my bum cheek so that I could move. She complied with a wink and a nod of her skinhead. As I climbed back into the car she noticed my domestic, Mavis, in the passenger seat. Before she had time to quizMavisonstemsandothersaladingredients, I heard a whizzing sound pass my ear followed by a thwack and saw the lass drop to the ground like a propdivingforaSteersburger.Iturned to Mavis and noticed she had something in her mouth. I immediately told her to stop playing silly-buggers with her pea-shooter and poison darts; couldn’t she see there was an epileptic white supremacist in our midst? I again climbed out of the car, manoeuvred the unconscious she-prop against a small-to-medium-sized arms cache, pulled up her safarisocks, pried the bottle of Klippies from her hand, took a swig, slapped her twice because of her fashion sense and returned to the vehicle, only to find Mavis ululating while hitching home. When the hairdresser arrived, all she said was “what style do you want?” Now, I’m not saying we need to be best friends, but a simple hello and introduction never hurt anyone. It’s just common courtesy. Taken aback and knowing I was in for it, I showed her the picture I had of the style I wanted. She looked, didn’t acknowledge and began to chop away. There was no smile, no communication and her unfriendly demeanour didn’t help me relax at all. I watched, through the tiny little gaps in my hair which covered my entire face, as she cut all the length off my hair. When I questioned about the length she snapped, “It’s still there.” Ihaveheardsomanysimilarstories to mine and I wondered, as I sat there, why some hairdressers just don’t listen to you. I pushed open the door and the hair on my feet shot up. Before me stood 12year-olds in khaki uniforms with embroidered swastikas Goose stepping around a flaming coil of boerewors. I was outraged by the sight as I am a firm believer of twerking instead of Goose stepping at social gatherings. When they eventually caught sight of me, the pubescents broke into a low hum and started marching my way. “I
HAVE played my part and I am grateful for the opportunity. It is time for me to go. If you can go into local government, work and walk away voluntarily, then you are a strong person because local government is very tough,” said outgoing Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma (48). AfterspendingnineyearsastheMsunduziMunicipality’s head of communications and marketing, Zuma will be leaving his office at the end of February to pursue personal projects. “I live by a simple philosophy that says I do the things that I love and I love the things that I do. I am grateful that I had thisopportunitybecauseithasdevelopedmeprofessionally. The experience has made me stronger and even tougher mentally. When I came here, Hloni Zondi was the mayor and Thabani Zulu was the municipal manager. Those people prepared me for the challenges that laid ahead of me in local government,” said Zuma. He said that 2006 was particularly tough for him because with politics playing itself out, he became a victim. “But it’s something which you can expect if you are working in this environment because it is highly politically charged. That experience was a blessing in disguise for me to better understand an environment like this,” said Zuma. Zuma is a teacher by profession and worked for nine years in the classroom. He served two years as a senior education specialist, specializing in youth and culture at the Department of Education. He then moved on to the private sector where he worked as a personal financial advisor for Old Mutual for four years. “I then followed my heart again because I loved radio, and had been doing community radio for some time. I was recruited by P4
Radio (now Gagasi FM) where I started off as a night jockey, then moved to the breakfast show, afternoon show and eventually a programmes director for a year,” said Zuma. In 2005, he joined the Msunduzi Municipality. “In the last 12 months I began to hear the voice inside of me that says it is probably time I pursued something else. I have decided that it is time to breathe life into those projects, and for me to be able to do that, I need to be out of this environment. It will be a totally different environment but I will still be pursuing communications because that is my passion,” said Zuma. He added that his main highlight during his stay at the municipality was being able to assist frustrated citizens. “I love Pietermaritzburg and whatever ways and means I can contribute to enhancing the brand, I will continue to do so. It is my home,” he said. His lowest point was when the municipality went under administration. “You do not want to be part of the organisation that goes under. Everybody, I am sure, would share the same sentiments. It was a sad moment for all of us, from top management to the ordinary worker sweeping the streets. “This is why I am proud of the new administration because they have led this organisation so diligently out of the darkness to be where it is today. I am glad I was still part of that change, so I have a story to tell,” he burst out with laughter before saying: “It is time to go now, now that things have gone back to normal.”

Woza Albert! W
OZA Albert! is one of the plays for which South African theatre is best known internationally. Its style of storytelling has inspired and influenced theatre companies around the world, and it remains one of the most vibrant examples of satirical anti-apartheid South African Theatre. This classic of South African theatre asks what would happen if Christ (Morena)camebackto1980’sapartheid South Africa. The show is primarily a satire that high-
lights the absurdities of apartheidanddisplaysthetalentsof two dextrous actors, in this case TQ Zondi and Mpilo Nzimande, who play a range of ordinary characters on the street. Directed by Peter Mitchell, the first half of this production highlights the absurdity of pass laws and the ultimate control employers had over the lives of their employees. As it moves through to the anticipation and arrival of the saviour (courtesy of SAA), it becomes darker and more foreboding as his life is relived
in an apartheid context. Using the elements of theatre established by Jerzy Grotowski and Peter Brook, and combining them with South African Township Theatre, the creators of the piece, director Barney Simon and performers Mbongeni Ngema and Percy Mtwa, evolved a piece of theatre that has stood the test of time. Woza Albert! will feature at the Hexagon Theatre on 19, 20, 21, 26 and 27 February at 6pm. Tickets cost R60 (R40 for students and seniors). Bookings at Computicket.

ty on the back of healthy economic growth. This in turn exhausted Eskom’s surplus electricity generation capacity and reduced its reserve margin progres sively. The reserve margin is a cushion of spare capacity that can be used when the system is impacted by unexpected technicalfaults, suddenpeaksindemand, or extreme weather conditions. “Furthermore, our power stations are ageing. Planned maintenance has often had to be shifted or deferred to ensure we have the capacity available to meet demand and keep the lights on. However,
T is universally acknowledged that alcohol and a diet do not go hand in hand. Alcohol is laden with empty calories so it has no nutritional value and goes straight to the waist or hips. It will also ensure that all your work with that diet is wasted.Beforeoverindulging, takeamoment to think about the effect alcohol has on the body. One glass of beer is equal to 600kj or 20 minutes of cycling at 15km/h to burn off. That third glass of red wine will need 20 minutes of sit ups or push ups to burn off. That Long Island Ice Tea is a good 30 minute session of skipping. One tequila needs 15 minutes of heavy weights. Suddenly it all looks very depressing. But all is not lost as South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) is offering drinkers the chance to have a dry and healthy February. AlcoFreeFeb aims to raise awareness of the dangers of excessive drinking and to show support for road crash victims. SADD is appealing to the community to pledge to give up alcohol for the whole, or at least part, of February to support this campaign. Special breaks are available for a day at R20. Non-drinkers can also join to make a donation. Visit the SADD website for more information or to sign up www.alcofreefeb.co.za. - Supplied
this approach is not sustainable and it is essential that planned maintenance be done to enable predictable and sustaina ble performance from Eskom’s power stations,” said Zingoni, adding that Es kom will only undertake load shedding as a last resort. Theproject, namedSunSafe, begins in KwaZulu-Natal, with long term plans to roll it out across South Africa. A child’s skin is thinner than an adult’s and far more sensitive, which means children are vulnerable to more sun damage within a shorter space of time. In fact, research shows that people get most of their total lifetime of sun exposure before the age of 18. The SCFSA says that skin cancer is a highly preventable lifestyle disease, which is in dire need of increased public awareness and education. Many moms don’t have the time, or forget, to apply sunscreen before their children leave for school. Even though some may send sunscreen to school withtheirchildren, itseldomcomesout the schoolbags. This leaves children exposed to damaging UV rays at the most dangerous time of day between 10am and 2pm. Some schools in KwaZulu-Natal, including The Wykeham Collegiate, have already got behind this project, with the hope that more schools will follow in months to come. The Sun Safe School Programme is in full swing with installation of sunscreen dispensers taking place in registered Sun Safe school classrooms. BACKING up your data is easily the most overlooked process for most people. I find that 95% of clients who come into our store with a faulty computer are stressed about their data as they have not backed up anything. The sad part is that it is so easy to backup your files, someone just needs to show you how! The process is substantially less complicated than most people assume. The first thing you will need is an external storage device. I would suggest purchasing an external hard drive from your local computer store. The hard drive will come with a USB cable where the one end will connect into your external hard drive, and the other end will connect into your computer. Once you have connected both ends of the cable, wait a few minutes for your computer to automatically install the drive. Yes, it’s that easy! Now, after a few minutes, all you need to do is copy your data to your backup drive. Select the files that you want to backup, right click with your mouse on the files/folders, and select the ‘send to’ option. You will notice that a new list of destinations will appear next to the menu. One of the options will have the brand name of the hard drive that you have purchased. Clicking on that brand name will backup the files to that drive. Yes, it is that easy!

Big weekend ahead for Maritzburg City Marathon NICOLE JOHN
THE Maritzburg City Marathon is just around the corner and this year, there is so much more for the family to do. At a recent briefing, race director John Hall said that they were expecting that the race, to be held from 20 to 23 February, would include over 4 000 participants this year. This year, there has been an increase in the rewards for the top ten participants. The festivities will begin on 20 February with a flame lighting ceremo ny, which doubles as a fundraiser for the Community Chest. Members of the public are encouraged to buy a red candle to support the organization whichwillalsogetlitwiththemarathon flame. This year, registrations for the race will be opened on 21 February from 9am to 8pm. “We thank all our volunteers who have taken leave from their jobs to assist us with the registration process,”

NDURANCE adventurer, Sean Conway, recently became the first and only person in history to swim the length of Britain from Land’s End to John O’Groats. Conway, who matriculated from Hilton College, was born in Zimbabwe and grew up in Hilton. When he is not in England, he is in South Africa at his home in Zululand. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Conway said that he was looking for a new adventure and decided to swim the length of Britain, 1 500kms,
because no one had done it before. “When I researched it, I saw that people had done other things, but no one swam, so I thought, why not?” It took Conway four and a half months to reach the end of his adventure, two months more than he expected due to bad weather and sea sickness. “Toputitintoperspective, itwasthe equivalent of 56 000 lengths of an average sized swimming pool. Each of my arms did three million strokes.” He endured jellyfish stings, lost 60kgs and swam in water of 11 degrees. “Growingabeardshieldedmefrom
jellyfish and inadvertently became my thing,” he said. He admitted that it was a relief when he came to the end of the swim, but that it was an adventure like never before. He got to explore the coastline, swim with dolphins and seals and saw various other animals. “Adventure isn’t about climbing mountains or rowing oceans. Adventure, initspurestform, issimply a way of thinking,” said Conway. To find out more about Conway’s adventures visit his website www.seanconway.com
