ASTWOOD residents say that armed robberies are a frequent activity in their area. This information surfaced after a shoot-out between the police and three suspects last week. At that time, the police received a complaint of a house robbery in Samana Road in the Mountain Rise police patrol area. The police said that it was reported to them that three suspects entered a residence through the back door of the home and were seen leaving with items. The Pietermaritzburg flying squad responded to the call and the suspects were spotted in a green Neon Chrysler vehicle in Birmingham Road. “Armed robberies are on the riseinEastwood.Alotofpeopleare also afraid to report the robberies to the police because they are

bers, you put your life in danger as you run the risk of being stabbed or shot at,” said Eastside Community Forum chairperson Fred Wagner. The suspects, who had robbed the Mountain Rise house, drove in
the direction of Eastwood. They crashed the car at the intersection of Starling and Tarentaal Roads in Eastwood,andcametoastandstill. After a dramatic shootout between the police and the suspects, two of
the suspects were injured. One of the witnesses to the shootout said that two armed robberies have taken place at her home. She said that she does not feel safe. “They just come inside our houses with their big guns and demand money and cellphones. You cannot argue with them otherwise they will kill you,” she said. With two suspects currently in hospital under police guard, and the third detained in police cells, police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said that all three suspects are linked to other cases in the Mountain Rise area. “The police recovered a firearm, ammunition, a television set, a laptop, jewellery and four cellphones in the vehicle. All the property is suspected to be stolen. All suspectswillappearincourtsoon,” said Naicker.

FIVE unknown, armed men wearing balaclavas recently entered the China Mall Discount Hypermarket and held up the manager and staff before fleeing with R40 000. The store is located along Barnsley Road next to Makro. One of the store managers, Simon He, said that the robbers were travelling in two separate cars. “We were getting ready to close the

shop when they entered. They took money and cellphones. Fortunately no one was injured,” said He. Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said that a case of business robbery was opened at the Alexandra Road police station for investigation. “Five unknown, armed men wearing balaclavasenteredtheChinaMalldiscount hypermarket along Barnsley Road and held up the manager, Wenhui Chen (32) and other employees. They tied them with ropes and forced the victim to open the safe. The suspects then demanded money and gathered the employees, tied them up
and assaulted them before fleeing with R40 000 in cash and a tablet,” explained Zwane. The suspects then fled the scene in their getaway vehicle, said Zwane. He added that no shots were fired, no injuries were sustained and the stolen items have not been recovered. No arrests have been made. “Policearemakinganappealtoanyone who can assist with information regarding the incident to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Ablon Majozi, at 072 818 4145,” said Zwane. Investigations are still underway.
Transport department to end strike

He said that the HPCA prepared materials which provided the traditional healers with introductory information about palliative care. “I sat in on the meetings as I was interested in finding out more about it,andIrealisedthepotentialimmediately for Msunduzi Hospice. The idea is to empower the traditional healers in order for them to recognise when the need arises for the patient to be referred to Hospice,” said OxfordHuggett. At the beginning of 2013, OxfordHuggett tried to implement the initiative at Msunduzi Hospice by assigning one staff member to act as liaison between the hospice care givers and the traditional healers. “Of course, as with any new project, there were teething problems, however the primary focus of the relationship is referral,” he said. MSUNDUZI Hospice Association has formed a new relationship with traditional healers in the UMgungundlovu district. This is as part of its approach of overall holistic treatment to the community. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, director of Msunduzi Hospice Association, Warren OxfordHuggett, said that the relationship was in its very early stages but that there is huge potential. “We have found that almost 80% of our patients seek help from traditional healers at some stage during their illness,” he said. The security guard stationed at the entrance to where the learners’ license test room is located, confirmed that only people who had come to sit for their learners’ tests were allowed inside the building. Gugu Ngubane, who was fuming and ready for a fight, asked for the centre manager to come out and
explain the status quo. “I can’t waste my money for nothing. The manager must come here and explain to us. This shows a lack of respect for the public. I have used money to get here. Will they give me my money back?” she said. Ngubane had come to renew her driver’s licence. One driver who had lost his driver’s licence said that he was thinking of going to the Mooi River licence centre.

Oxford-Huggett offered them the opportunity to join the monthly training and meetings that the Hospice care givers have, allowing them to gain a better understanding of caring for and treating patients. “Wearestillintheveryearlystages but what is important to note is that the traditional healers want to be a part of the relationship,” he said. Oxford-Huggett said that Hospice looks after about 350 patients on a monthly basis, all of whom are treated at their homes. He said that the benefits of this particular relationship will onlybeseenoverthelongterm, but that the wheel has been set in motion. “It is important to remember that we at Hospice are working with the traditional healers, they are not working for us. Together we will enhance the quality of palliative care for our patients,” said Oxford-Huggett.
Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Cyril Vilakazi, one of the traditional healers in the programme, said that he has learnt many valuable things. Vilakazi, who operates in Howick West, has been a traditional healer for over 20 years and sees, on average, 20 people a week. He said that with the help of the programmes that HPCA has implemented, he is now able to better understand and identify the illnesses people who he consults suffer with. “Before the programme, I had misconceptions about how Hospice works, however with the training, I can better understand how palliative care works and I am able to use different approaches from my private practice whichenhancesmywork,”saidVilakazi. He said that he is now able to identify who the appropriate people are and refer them immediately to Hospice so they can get the care that need. He has already referred five people to Hospice

Terrel Gous (17), Calvin Scannell (18) and LukePieterse(18)wereontheirwayhomefrom school when they noticed the burning house. Gous said that Scannell and he were at the back of Pieterse’s bakkie when they saw smoke comingfromahouse.TheyquicklytoldPieterse to turn around so they could go back and help. When the boys got to the house, they could not see anyone outside so they jumped over the gate to check what was going on. “When we got there, we saw an old lady standing outside the house. She was burnt and in shock. We asked her if there was anyone else
in the house and she told us that her two dogs were inside,” said Gous. He said that they got the lady to safety and left her at a neighbour’s house, and then the three of them went back to find the dogs. “There was no question about it, we were going to find the dogs and that was that. When we got inside, the lounge was filled with smoke sowedecidedtotakeourshirtsoffandusethem to cover our faces so we could breathe better,” said Gous. “We heard things popping and exploding all around us but we rushed to find the dogs,” said Scannell. Gous said they noticed a room where the door was closed and ran towards it. “When we opened it the smoke poured out but we went in and called for the dogs and one ran out. Eventually the second dog also ran out of the house and we took it to safety. As soon as we got out of the house, the geyser fell through
the roof. By then all the windows had burst and smoke was coming out of every direction and the fire department and the police took over,” said Gous. The boys said that only after the adrenaline had worn off did they realize that their lives could also have been in danger. “Whenweallgothomewerealizedhowserious it was. We’re just glad that everyone is safe and that no one was seriously hurt,” said Gous. The boys were honoured at a special assembly at Carter High School and were awarded service to the community certificates. “We did this for them because it was out of pure humanity that they rushed in to help. We are very proud of them,” said Jenny Rogers, marketing manager at the school. “We are grateful to everyone for their well wishes and thanks but we didn’t do it for the praise. Nothing went through our minds. We just went with our instincts,” said Gous.

HE Happy Earth Festival recently took place at the Botanical Gardens. Hosted by the Happy Earth Forum, the festival offered opportunities for school pupils and teachers to experience different experiential environmental lessons from participating organisations. Over 750 pupils from pre-school to high school attended the Friday schools event. The WESSA awards ceremony was the highlight of the day, when 20 schools from the city and inland areas received awards for implementing successful eco-schools environmental programmes. All individuals will not lose the same amount of weight on the same exercise program. Some individuals will actually respond very little to a regular exercise regimen in terms of losing fat weight (these individuals are called non-responders).Thisisgoodevidence to show that exercise per se doesn’t make you thin, especially if you’re not endowed with the right genes. Losing body fat is a complicated matter, and it goes far beyond a regular training progra mme. The goodnews,however, is that research has shown that being overweight and fit is much better than being thin andsedentary,as fitness is directly related to a lower risk of all-cause
mortality. Weight training makes women big and bulky Weight training can make you bulkup-ifyouhavetheXYchromosome and it is your distinct intention to build huge muscles. Even then, it is no easy feat to gain muscle. It takes time and effort, a carefully compiled scientific training programme and finely tuned nutritional strategies. For women, however, these sound strategies will not be enough. The reason being that women have nowhere near the required testosterone levels to put on any significant amounts of muscle mass. If you do see women with bulky muscles, you know for sure that their dietary habits include illegal substances such as anabolic steroids and other designer drugs. There is just no other way. The truth is that strength training approximately two to four times a week, doing a variety of exercises for the major muscle groups, will help women to achieve a lean and toned appearance, and strengthen bones and joints. In fact, since women are more prone to osteoporosis, it could be said thatwomenmightactuallybenefit more from weight training than men. If you’re not drenched in sweat, you’re not working hard enough The harder you work out, the more calories you’ll burn within a given period and thus the more fat you stand to lose, but how much you sweat does not necessarily reflect how hard you’re working. Some people tend to sweat bucket loads while others don’t sweat much at all, regardless of their fitness level or degree of exertion. Your sweat rate is related to your body weight, your genetic makeup and external factors such as environmental conditions and clothing.
Acne is one of the most common skin disorders in modern society. Acne or acne vulgaris affects both males and females especially teenagers but can also affect adults. Acne is caused through an over excretion of the sebaceous or oil gland. This is normally due to a hormonal imbalance in the body however there are other factors that contribute to the formation of acne. These include stress, pregnancy, neglect or improper product use. Studies show that there’s an increased risk if an individual has a family history of acne. During puberty, there is an increase in the production of the male hormone, testosterone, in men and women which leads

to an over active sebaceous gland. Once there is an increased production of oil it leads to plug formation within the pore creating an environment where bacteria grows and multiplies forming acne. Contrary to popular belief acne is not caused by poor diet or bad hygiene although this could aggravate a skin problem. Acne is characterized by the formation of blackheads, white heads, pimples, cysts and abscesses. It can also result in psychological and social problems. Acne patients could have low esteem as a result of their appearance. Picking and squeezing spots increases the chances of scarring.

The KZN Rugby Union is not able in providing grants to clubs, but it is not enough to produce a professional, competitive edge that is so vital these days if one is to keep up, and better the other provinces in providing a healthy stability at the lower rungs of the game. Clubrugbyhasproducedthelikesof SpringbokandSharkslooseheadprop,
the popular Beast Mtawarira, who came through the ranks from U20 level at College Rovers. Grassroots rugby needs more money - strapping alone is a huge expense. To this end, Fidelity Security, a seasoned company conceived - and owned still - by former Sharks and Springbok loose forward Wahl Bartmann, a law graduate from the then Rand Afrikaans University himself,decidedtoputsomethingback into the game and his generous sponsorship has made great strides in
adding value to the game in the province. Bartmann, who graduated through club rugby, knows the value of grassroots rugby and also supports various Durban clubs. There was a lot of swimming taking place recently at Ridge Junior Primary School, with the pre-schoolers doing a ‘show and swim’, the Grade one children doing a fun swim and individual Grade two and Grade three galas. Ridge, under the tutorship of well known swimming coach Odette Randelhoff, is committed to ensuring that all children are water-safe. All these swimming events were well supported by parents, grandparents, siblings and friends and the children were very proud to show off their swimming skills. Breaking cricket records
SOME of you may have heard the term heartbleed in conversations regarding internet and security over the last few weeks. Most people don’t understand the details of it, so let me explain it in a simple manner. Everything we do on the internet is a series of communications between your computer and another computer somewhere else. Now for obvious reason, we have to be careful with what information we send over the internet. We protect this information by encoding it with an encryption. This stops people over the internet from “listening in”onourconversationswiththeothercomputer,astheywillnotunderstand the information that was intercepted. Now someone was very clever and found that they don’t need to try andlisteninontheconversationbetweenyouandtheserver.Theycould start a different conversation with the server, and then trick it into giving more information than asked for. It uses an exploit categorized as a buffer overflow. In easy terms, this is similar to me asking you to forward me an email that I sent you a month ago, but my instructions aren’t very clear as to what email, and you therefore accidentally send me all of the emails in your inbox with my name on it. Grace College matric pupils, Matthew Luksich (L, first team cricket captain and KZN U17 inland team member) and Conrad Lilje (R), rewrote the school’s cricketing record books in a match against St Charles fifths earlier this term. Luksich scored an impressive 101 runs not out, off 108 balls and Lilje produced some splendid bowling, taking nine wickets for 32 runs. This is the first time in Grace College history that a century was scored and so many wickets taken by a single bowler in one match.

We have realised that it’s impossible to develop the game properly without registering the teams. “The fact is, we need to know how many teams are we dealing with,” said Hossen. He said that Saifa’s first local
development program will be officially launched on 26 April from 9am to 4pm at Eastwood Primary School. “For starters this day (April 26) is designed for females of all ages only. We are saying to our senior citizens and young girls still in primary and high schools, come play indoor footballwithyourfriendsorfamilymembers. In short it will be a women’s futsal day.”

TEPHEN Burrow and Dave Crewe Brown will be riding the three day Sani2C Mountain Bike event from Underberg to Scottburgh to raise funds for the Tembaletu Trust in Pietermaritzburg. Burrow, a sales manager for Africa at Cummings Filtration, is fairly new to mountain biking and said that he took on the challenge of the race to do something different. Brown, his partner and a supply chain development manager for South Africa Breweries, is an experienced rider and has completed three Sani2C races before. He is also a Cape Epic finisher. “He has been riding for a long time but this is his first big ride in a few years as he is actually a cancer survivor as
well,” said Burrow. Burrow said that they are doing the ride to raise money for the Tembaletu Trust, in order to help them continue with the work that they are currently involved in. “They would be able to use it for programmes they run, maintenance on facilities, anywhere that it would really help ease the burden,” said Burrow. He added that Tembaletu Trust have been partners with Cummins Filtration on corporate responsibility for the last two years, and have been excellent partners who supported initiatives. In turn, the company has been able to offer them some financial support as well. “Tembaletu makes a difference in the community. They help prepare leaders of tomorrow, today. If no one stops and does something, then noth-
ing will ever change,” said Burrow. Burrow and Brown are in need of sponsorships and donations towards their cause. “Essentially, we are not in need of a few people who will donate thousands, but we are in need of many people to donate a R100 or R50. Critical mass. That is what we are after,” said Burrow. “Tembaletu Trust would like to wish Stephen Burrow and Dave Crewe Brown all the best for the Sani2c race in May. We hope that members of the public support Stephen and Dave in their endeavours,” said Richard Rangiah, director of Tembaletu Trust.
