ITH the general election only six days away, it seems the embattled Pietermaritzburg Home Affairs office is slowly sliding back to its daysofpoorpublicservicedelivery and long queues. Last week, when the Maritzburg Fever, visited the Home Affairs offices along Church Street around midday, there were more than30peoplequeuingoutsidethe main entrance. The queues were split into two. One queue was for people who had come to apply for their identity documents and passports and the other queue was for those who had come to fetch those documents. Pensioner Vela Sithole (79) said that he applied for a new smart card in February. “Wehavetostandtheentireday without proper service. I don’t know how we are going to vote if it takes us more than three hours just to collect our smart cards. The officials don’t seem to care about the fact that we are pensioners and some of us have disabilities,” said an agitated Sithole. Two other pensioners, aged 71 and 64, who refused to give their names, said that they had been standing in the queue since 9am that day. They were both from Northdale. “We came here at about 9am and we have not received our IDs. Last week we were here at 4am and by 3pm, we were sent home. Wehadtocomeagainthefollowing day at 4.30am but the home affairs officialsdidnotassistus.Thisisthe third time we have come to fetch our IDs and still we are standing in queues. They only told us that the computers are not working but there has not been any feedback since this morning. I have a backache and I am tired of standing,” said the pensioner.

>> Agitated pensioners made to stand for hours for their documents Aside from the queues and slow service, another major blow for people waiting was the unavailability of a public toilet. Zipho Mchunu said that if people go outside to look for a toilet, officials do not allow them to rejoin the queues on their return. The acting provincial manager for the KZN Department of Home Affairs, Nosipho Shandu said that there is a queue management system in the morning and clients are screened when entering the office.
“The number of people allowed to enter the public hall is monitored so as to not cause a stampede. This happened during a period when the department was inundated with many clients. When they are in the hall, they utilise seating facilities in the form of terminal benches and floor walkers. Security personnel assist clients who are leaving and entering the office to ensure that they do notlosetheirturn.Themodernisation project, which incorporated Smart ID cards and passports
under one system, meant that the aforementioned offices had to be integrated for efficiency purposes,” explained Shandu. She went on to say that the PMB office was selected as one of three in KZN to issue the new Smart ID cards. Even though the demand of Smart ID cards has increased, the green identity documents are still valid. “Rumours are going around that the old ID is going to be abolished and will not be valid, which is not the case,” said Shandu.

MSUNDUZI Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association (MPTA), in partnership with the Isisekelo Youth Development Organisation, recently launched a programme called the Imbalenhle Tourism Education-
Encouraging tourism entrepreneurship al Awareness programme at the Msunduzi FET College campus. This programme encourages entrepreneurship among tourism students across all tertiary institutions. Other stakeholders that MPTA are working with include Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) uMgungundlovu, Alliance Française and Midlands Corridor. MPTA’s tourism education and developmentcoordinatorSduNdlovu,said
that tourism students should have entrepreneurship skills as this will create more jobs in future. “Tourismstudentsneedtobeproactive in achieving their career objectives. We are promoting young entrepreneurship and urge students to finish their qualifications with a mentality of being self-employed. Seda uMgungundlovu has come on board to advise students on how they can open their own businesses. In our presentations,

Within MPTA, we have community tourism forums where we engage with the community on how they can establish gaps in township tourism. According to the National Development Plan, tourism is one of the six key growth economic sectors. There was a lot ofexcitementfromtheFETstudentswhen we launched this project and we would like to thank FET College for their support. This was the start of a long-term relationship,” said Ndlovu.

Renovations have started at Publicity House. This historic building, which is located next to the new Tourism Hub, is being renovated to complement the new Hub building. At this stage it is not clear how much the renovations will cost. The Publicity House building is located at the corner of Chief Albert Luthuli (Commercial) Street and Langalibalele (Longmarket) Street. It houses the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association (MPTA) offices.

T has been over two months since the paid parking system has been implemented at Liberty Midlands Mall and, for the most part, customers have become familiar with and accepted the changes implemented. “As expected, we have received some feedback, both positive and negative. Many customers have acknowledged the growing trend for shopping malls to charge for parking,” said Umi Khan, centre manager. Khan said that the largest challenge faced was not having enough pay stations available when the system went live. However this was recognised and more machines were ordered. Khan said that another problem is with some customers trying to pay at exits, therefore holding up the exit queue. “Wearedoingeverythingpossibletoaccommodate shoppers, however we strongly encourage shoppers to make use of the parking machines before proceeding to their cars.” Anotherchallengefoundwasthecongestion at the third exit gate due to the proximity to the N3. This gate is favoured by customers and, with the newly developed traffic routes, results in congestion at the gate. “We are conducting a number of activities in order to encourage shoppers to make use of the

However, Khan said that one of the main benefits that came from the new parking system was that prime areas previously occupied by taxi operators and pool parkers, people who park and then travel together in one car, have now been freed up for shoppers to make use of. A dedicated tenant parking facility has also freed up additional space for shoppers. Liberty Midlands Mall is the only major mall in PMB that charges for parking, with the exception of The Sidewalk Mall in Scottsville which charges from R2 regardless of how long a customer is at the centre for. Cascades Lifestyle Centre manager, Cathy Doherty-Bigara and The Mall @ Scottsville centre manager, Lara Gracie, said that there are no plans to implement paid parking at either centre. “We realise the value of free parking at the centre and whilst we understand the motivation for other malls to implement such, we are committed to providing free, safe and convenient parking to our customers,” said Gracie. She added that the entire parking area, includingtheundergroundareas,willbeupgraded during the final stages of the redevelopment of The Mall @ Scottsville to improve flow, lighting, new parking lines and asphalting of all tar areas. The underground parking is still available to customers however the exit has been blocked as part of the phase two upgrade and installation of a larger lift and stairwell. “Theparkingareaswillbecompletedinconjunction with the redevelopment timelines, which are scheduled for completion between September and October 2014,” said Gracie.

The fire, which engulfed about 42 shacks, affected around 68 people. All of the ten affected people had already registered to vote, and they are appealing to local authorities

LOCAL woman, Melissa Vurovecz, has made it into the Top 24 of the Mrs South Africa pageant. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Vurovecz said that the journey so far has been amazing and that she is more confident now that she can bring the title home. Vurovecz, born and raised in Pietermaritzburg and currently living in Hilton, is the only representative from the province. She is involved in Cansa Pietermaritzburg and has helped raise fund, and also does volunteer work. She will also be organizing events for Cansa in Pietermaritzburg and surrounds. “I would like to say thank you to everyone who has been supporting me because I wouldn’t have made it this far without you. VER 170 youth from the uMgungundlovu and eThekwini municipalities have graduated from the Youth Environmental Services (YES) programme hosted by the National Department of Environmental Affairs and the Wildlands Conservation Trust. The main objectives of the YES programme is to expose youth to the green economy, build capacity through training, enable future employment through education, provide experiential learning in the workplace and create eco-entrepreneurs. In 2012, the department called on non-profit organizations and training institutions to get involved in the community as implementing agents in the YES programme. The Wildlands Conservation Trust responded to the call to enable youth participation in the Green Economy in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. A year later, Wildlands and DEA are proud to have hosted the graduation of 179 youth participants of the YES programme. Graduates receive a National Certificate in Nature Conservation Resource Guardianship from the Services Sector Education and Training Authority (SSETA). “There were challenges along the way but we managed to overcome them with good mentorship. Thanks to Wildlands and the Department of Environmental Affairs for the opportunity. I am looking forward to the future after this programme,” said Nikiwe Gcabashe, one of the graduates.

Teach pupils the rules of the road
EVERY year, pupils die and are injured on the roads because they don’t have any knowledge of what to do when the traffic is moving. They just stand on the road and expect the vehicles to stop for them. This has to be eliminated by spreading road safety information in schools. The Department of Transport must conduct information campaigns, as it did previously, by visiting schools and teaching pupils the rules of the road. ARSITY College recently hosted a wellness day to promote a healthy lifestyle to students. Lifeline and the Health Department offered free, confidential testing for HIV, blood sugar and blood pressure for all students and staff. Many students took the opportunity to get tested and discovered new things about themselves. Virgin Active and Absolute Wellness also provided a free service by coming onto campus, showcasing what they have to offer. Ruth Croeser from Virgin Active did a Zumba demonstration, with many students participating and an equally enthusiastic audience. Dave Roberts from Absolute Wellness did a boot camp demonstration, to show exactly what boot camp is all about. The testing and input from Virgin Active and Absolute Wellness tied in perfectly with the monthly theme of ‘physical wellness’ - exposing students to how they can take responsibility for their own health.

TIM Barry will be presenting “Back to the Woods – a guide to idle parenting” hosted by Singakwenza at Cordwalles Preparatory School on 8 May at 6pm. The talk covers research on “fertile neglect” and how children are hard-wired to grow. It covers the ideal conditions in which their natural urges towards exploration and growth are stimulated. It also looks into how some of the most widely accepted parenting practices hinder this process. Barry is a psychologist in private practice. He has a particular interest
in finding alternatives to the prevailing consumerism that typifies Western life. The talk will include how access to technology and pop culture impact children. RIAN Khoza is excited about his first released album titled PMB Poison Personal Moral Regeneration. Khoza said that the 18-track album is about his life. From love, betrayaltosuccess,thealbumtellsall. “This is the first album. All these songs are very old but the lyrics have been upgraded. This album is my timeline from 1999 to 2004. When I was 19-years-old, I was in university and I did not have money, so in order for me to eat I had to be creative. The album talks about my hustles and how I overcame obstacles in life. “My friends and I used to write songs all the time and we did not have a real studio to record the music. The lyrics were more hardcore, but then I grew up and I polished up some of the content. That was when I came up with PMB Poison Personal Moral Regeneration as a subtitle. In this album I am talking about the rough side of life and how you can get out of it,” said Khoza. In this album, Khoza said that he has worked with the best hip-hop artists and producers in PMB such as Mylooe, Zoox, Arifani Moyo and Mfanelo Mchunu. “In 2010 I was getting ready to release the album and after I paid the producertoworkonthemusic,hejust disappeared. The person who was handling my website also dropped everything. I guess I trusted people too much.” Khoza’s album is available at Sophie’s Choice supermarket in Imbali Unit 1 and at Easy Eating on 55 Alan Paton Drive. The album is R60.

FILM produced and written by Pietermaritzburg and Durban filmmaker Janet van Eeden, A Shot at the Big Time, has been selected for the Cannes Court Metrage, the short film corner of the Cannes Film Festival 2014. It was chosen from more than a million entries and could win a Palme d’Or if it impresses the short films jury. “This honour is something my co-producer, Magda M. Olchawska, and I have dreamt of since we joined forces to make A Shot at the Big Time, the short,” said Van Eeden. “We met online when I ran the Indiegogo.com crowd-funding campaign in 2011. I’d given up on the dream recently and am working hard at presently raising funds to make the feature film by the end of the year, so when Magda let me knww that we’d been accepted, I was over the moon.” Van Eeden launched the crowdfunding campaign for Shot on Remembrance Day 2011, in memory of her brother, Jimmy, who was killed on the border in mysterious circumstances after being there for only three days in 1979. “I’d never been able to forget Jimmy’s tragic life, and after being challenged by film and theatre critic Robert Greig to write about my own life instead of writing plays about literary greats, I finally had the couragetoputpentopaperandtackle one of the saddest experiences of my life,” she said.
“Jimmy was my idol in the small town of Odendaalsrus. He was a rock star in the eyes of all the youngsters as he was the lead singer in a band, which dreamed of making the big time. When he received his call-up papers when he was only 17, his dream was put on hold. A terrible accident happened and Jimmy had a breakdown, and was classified as mentally unfit for military service. He tried to put his life back together again, but he was broken by the events. “Three years later the army forgot about the fact that they’d classified him as unfit and called him up to do border duty. He was part of the infantry but he did not want to kill anyone. There are conflicting stories of what happened to him on the border on that fateful
day, but all we know for sure is that three days after arriving on the border, my parents received a phone call telling them that Jimmy had been killed by a ricochet bullet.” When Van Eeden couldn’t get funding for the feature film without givingawaytherightscompletely,she decided to do a crowd-funding campaign and to produce the film herself. She didn’t raise enough money for the feature on Indiegogo.com, but did find gifted young director Stephen de Villiers, who lives in Australia but is originally from
KZN, and London producer Olchawska. Together they decided to shoot a short film instead. De Villiers flew out in July 2012 to film Shot, the short. A Shot at the Big Time was later selected for the Durban FilmMart in 2012 and the short film premiered at the Durban InternationalFilmFestivalinJulylast
year. It was also awarded an eThekwini Film Award in November 2013. Olchawska will represent Shot at Cannes. as there has not been enough time to raise sponsorship for Van Eeden’s visit, but hopes the whole team will represent Shot next year when they enter the feature into the festival.

HE Wildlands Conservation Trust recently hosted an awards ceremony for its school recycling initiative at Russell High School, to recognize and reward the 89 local schools for their recycling efforts of 2013. The Recycling for Life project rewards each school for its recycling efforts in the form of a financial rebate, based on the value of the waste collected. Deccan Road Primary School collected the most waste and was awarded a cheque of R23 337 for collecting 50 917kg’s of recycling in 2013. St John’s DSG collected 41 548kg’s with Epworth in third collecting 35 815kg’s. Siva Gounden, Deccan Road Primary principal, said that the funds received from the recycling collection will be used towards building a facility at the school that incorporates a library, classrooms and a staff room. Athlone junior primary pupils and staff produced a wonderful musical, "Hats Off!". This celebration of music and dance was written and directed by Ronel Wood. Ballerina's from Brenda McLachlan's School of Dance performed a tango choreographed by Di West. Gerrit Coetzee (principal of Athlone Primary) is extremely proud of all the children - their hats and costumes added to the success of the musical, and their enthusiasm and hard work certainly paid off. The teachers added glamour and laughs to the show by appearing on stage as celebrities such as Goldilocks and Cruella de Vil. In a bid to create the best street circuit yet, popular and respected motoring media personality, Marius Roberts has joined the Top Gear Festival Durban team bringing with him the promise of more motortainment than ever before. From the moment the sun rises on 21 and 22 June, to the time the sun sets, there will be non-stop action right in front of them. On track there is plenty for
spectators to get excited about, with more competitive racing action. The newest and most exciting action takes the form of an all new Time Attack Invitational, where 30 of South Africa’s bravest drivers take each other on in 30 of South Africa’s fastest cars. Grade 10 and 11 Epworth sprint canoeists, Donna Hutton (L) and Kayla de Beer, will represent South Africa at the African Youth Games in Botswana at the end of May as members of the SA junior sprint canoeing team. The duo will be part of a four member sprint canoe team which will also consist of two South African boys. They will join 4000 junior athletes from 54 countries, participating in more than 14 sporting codes. Hutton has also been selected for the SA junior Olympic sprint canoe team which will compete in China in August for the junior Olympics.

For the desktop users, you can now boot directly to Desktop instead of having the start screen open up, as well as pin applications from the Modern UI (previously known as Metro) to your taskbar. Along with all of these obvious updates, there are huge improvements in the compatibility area as well as in security sector. Windows 8 has been very secure from the get go, but now it boasts massive improvements with enhanced encryption. One other thing worth mentioning is the improvements on power usage, allowing your laptops and tablets to last much longer.

Explosive league season ahead THE2014SpurSchoolMountainBike High School League is set for yet anotherrecordbreakingseason,with the early season warm-up events around the country getting underway. Currently in its sixth season, the league has surpassed all expectations in terms of participation. “With an average participation growth of around 40% and a jam-packed2014calendarwithmore than 50 races scheduled before the finals at Bekker School in Magaliesburg in October, we are set for a bumper season,” said league co-ordinator Meurant Botha of Amarider. Amarider is also playing a key role in terms of cycling development. Apart from the various rider development programmes that have been successfully implemented country-
wide since the inception of the league, mountain bike tracks are being built around the country in association with regional municipalities, schools and land owners, to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place to support the sport on a regional basis. “We would love to see mountain biking acknowledged as an official school sport. “Being nominated as a finalist for the 2014 Discovery Sport Industry Awards earlier this year is confirmation that there is merit in this endeavour,” said Andrew Cronje, Spur market development manager. ANNO Langehoven will begin his Barefoot Comrades run from Johannesburg to Durban to raise funds so that he can plant vegetables at underprivileged schools, orphanages and community centres in South Africa. Langehoven will leave from the city hall in Johannesburg on 1 May and make his way down to Pietermaritzburg completely barefoot. He will end the first leg of his journey at the City Hall, which will also be the beginning of the second leg down to Durban when he runs the Comrades Marathon, barefoot as well. Fever, Speaking to Maritzburg Fever Langehoven said that he had run the Comrades Marathon in 2000 and decided to tackle it again. “This prompted me to ask how I can combine such a pursuit with living barefoot, whilst at the same time creating awareness of social and eco-justice issues.” Langehoven said he has been living barefoot since 1 January, 2010, to make people aware of social and eco- justice issues and to create
awareness that people need to slow down and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. He said that for the most part, his feet will remain bare however he might need to strap them with plaster when it gets unbearable. “As young kids, we use to run with our front foot strapped when we raced on a track; the same goes for the journey down to PMB.” His preparations included a lot of running barefoot to get him used to the feel of the road. “I think what helped was the first few years of living and walking barefoot, so when I started running barefoot my feet were already used to the absence of shoes,” said Langehoven. Langehoven will be running alone with the support of his wife, Maretha and two daughters. “We are really excited about the project and can’t wait to get on the road,” he said. People can sponsor gardens at R300 per person or R20 per meter; every 15 meters plants a garden for one person.
