Confidence ahead of vote >> Political parties contesting this years election race are optimistic that voters in KwaZuluNatal will choose them NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

W

ITH millions of registered voters in KZN expected to visit the polls today, political parties contesting this year’s election are confident that KZN voters will vote for them. New kids on the block, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Agang SA, are optimistic that they will do better than anticipated. Speaking to the Maritzburg Fever, EFF spokesperson Reggie Ngcobo said that should they win over Gauteng, come the 2019 elections they will “govern this country.” “In South Africa, we have specific targeted areas and that includes Gauteng,LimpopoandKZN.InKZN, we are looking at getting 10% of the

total votes. This will give us enough strength to be part of the legislature. In KZN we might get more than the 10% benchmark. Our rallies and marches have a great turnout and we are confident that we will achieve our targets,” said Ngcobo. Agang SA’s spokesperson Mark Peach, said that they have attracted crowds of supporters in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the North West provinces. “We will do better than anticipated,” said Peach. Minority Front (MF) spokesperson Patrick Pillay said that their expectations are that voters will come out in numbers to vote for MF. “We have always dealt with people at the grassroots level and we know their needs. We are looking at increasing the number of KZN

parliamentary seats. Currently, we have two. We are not afraid of new parties because we have been around for years,” said Pillay. Deputy President of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) Wayne Thring said that they are looking at nothing less than double digit parliamentary seats. “Quite a lot of people have said that they will vote for ACDP and we are extremely optimistic. The ACDP presidenthasgivenusagoalofbeing in the top four,” said Thring. Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) spokesperson Sibongile Nkomo said that they are confident that they will get a lot of votes. “We are willing to get back KZN under an IFP leadership.” Congress Of the People (Cope) provincial chairperson Bheki Khusi

said that they are targeting six parliamentary seats nationally. “We have strongholds in KZN and we are confident that we will get the votes we need,” said Khusi. Even though he admitted that their election campaigns were affected by financial constraints, Khusi said that Cope is not a dying party. “Agang SA will get one national seat by a miracle because they are a failed project. EFF is a strong party, even though their leader talks a lot of rubbish,” said Khusi. AfricanNationalCongress’sSupa Zuma said that in the Moses Mabhida region, the party is not expecting anything less than 80% of the vote. “We are confident that we will get the exact results we got in 2009. We are not afraid of Agang SA and EFF

because they are our grandchildren. They come from the ANC. You cannot expect an organization which was formed out of anger to last for years.YearsbackwhenUnitedDemocratic Movement (UDM) and Cope were formed, their gatherings used to have huge turnouts but where are they now?” said Zuma. Sizwe Mchunu of the Democratic Alliance (DA) said that the party is destined to grow in this election. “I cannot give you exact predictions but we are pleased with how our campaigns have unfolded. We arehappythatthepeopleofKZNand South Africa have welcomed us. We are not threatened or intimidated by the new parties,” said Mchunu. The National Freedom Party (NFP) was not available for comment.

IEC ready to count ballots

>> The commission encourages people to go out in numbers to vote NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

T

HE counting of ballots will start immediately after closure of voting stations at 9pm today, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said. “For voting stations with small registration numbers, we should start seeing results coming in at about 11pm,” said IEC spokesperson, Thabani Ngwira. Voting stations open today from 7am to 9pm. Voters will receive two

ballots. One is for the national legislature and the other is for provincial legislature. Ngwira said that the elderly and the sick will be given priority in the queues at the voting stations, and there will be people monitoring the lines. About 12 million ballot papers have been printed for KwaZulu-Natal. The number has increased because the voters roll increased to five million. There are 4746 voting stations in the province and 228 in the Msunduzi area.

“Political party campaigning is allowed outside the voting station boundaries on election day. What is not allowed are gatherings as defined in the Gatherings Act,” said Ngwira. He stressed how important the voter turnout is for parliamentary seat allocation. “Seats are allocated on proportion relating to the number each political party received during voting. If a political party receives 55% of the total votes cast in the election, then they will receive 55% of the seat allocation, irrespective of whether there was a three million voter turnout. As the commission, we encourage people to go out in numbers to exercise their right to vote,” said Ngwira. In KZN, the IEC completed training on the management of voting stations for 15 000 electoral staff and 900 area managers who will work at the voting stations. Distribution of electoral material was concluded by 25 April, 2014. Special votes took place on Monday and Tuesday. KZN had 64 533 approved special votes.

A

S a result of crime, the toilets at Woodlands Primary School are in a state of disrepair. Maritzburg Fever visited the school recently and noted that the staff and pupils toilets are barely functional due to broken toilet seats, missing sewer and copper pipes, broken or missing taps and sinks, with the boys urinal nonfunctional because the water feed pipe was stolen. Speaking to various parents, residents and concerned community members, who spoke under anonymity for security reasons, it was confirmed that the situation with the toilets is a direct result of increased crime at the school. There have been several robberies at the school, the most recent being on 2 April, 2014. The thieves are alleged to be teenagers from the community. A source said that the school has had eight of its recycling bins stolen. These bins are a part of the Wildlands School Recycling project, which encourages children to recycle, thus making money for the school. There were also 70 hexagonal tables, donated by Maritzburg College which were stolen. However the most common theft of property is the copper pipes, toilet seats, taps and sinks. There have also been holes made intheprefabwallsbytheperpetrators, which have rendered the toilets unusable. Thesourcesaidthattherobberies occur in broad daylight after schoolhasclosedatabout4:30pm.

The toilets in the boys bathrooms are completely nonfunctional. It is alleged that materials are sold to enable the perpetrators to use the money for drugs. The school management work closely with the Mountain Rise SAPS, Community Police Forum and neighbourhood watch. The

success of this is apparent in the recent arrests of some of the youth who are said to be involved in the robberies. “It breaks my heart to see my children going to school knowing that basic conditions cannot be

met,” said a concerned parent. Brenda Jordan, whose child attends the school, said that it is important to encourage those who are able to assist with the repair and revamp of the toilets. “School security is a big issue and unfortunately, like most government schools, this has to be provided by the school. However, my past experience on this school’s governing body alerted metothefactthatmanyparentsdo not pay school fees and as a result, paymentforsuchnecessitiesisnot readily available. “Fundraising then becomes a necessity. In our endeavour to create a positive atmosphere for the current and future generations of this institution, we need the assistance of everyone whocanlendahelpinghand,”said Jordan. Another concerned parent, who asked to remain anonymous, said that her daughter and two sons have complained about the conditions of the toilets. Management at the school havesaidthattheirmain, andonly, priority is to provide both the pupilsandstaffwithtoiletsthatare clean and risk free. The school has received some assistance from various companies and individuals. Many of the community and school governing body members have identified the plight of the school and have started hosting fundraising activities for the revamp of the toilets. Jeralda Isaacs and Merle Clayton-Williams have been the forerunners in raising funds to this effect. The long term plan is to rebuild theschooltoitsformerglorywhich is currently in the pipeline, according to the source.

ITH voting stations opening today at 7am, this week saw long queues outside the KZN Home Affairs building in Church Street. The queue travelled down Church Street and joined Printing Office Street. By Monday morning at 11am, more than 70 people had come to apply for special identity documents (IDs) while others had come to fetch them. Parents and relatives of new born babies also had to endure the long queues in order to apply for and fetch birth certificates. Nomthandazo Masondo from KwaMpumuza had been waiting in the queue for more than an hour. “This queue is not moving. I have come here to fetch my ID because I will be using it to vote,” said Masondo.

Arthur Maseko from Sobantu had lost his ID and had come to apply for a special ID, which will enable him to vote. “The line is moving slowly. I need to get this special ID. If not today, I will have to come back early tomorrow morning,” said Maseko on Monday morning. In another ID saga, approximately 10 Jika Joe fire victims whose belongings, including IDs, were destroyed in the fire are likely not to vote, should they not get their temporary IDs by 9pm today. By Monday afternoon, ward councillor Naleni Atwaru said that she had contacted homeaffairsforassistancebut hadnotreceivedanycorrespondence. “I called the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and they confirmed that you can vote with a temporary ID. They also confirmed that home affairs will be open on voting day,” said Atwaru.

POTHOLES continue to dominate Pietermaritzburg streets. The ward audits report in the recent Executive Committee (Exco) agenda shows that there are a number of identified potholes in various wards which need to be repaired. Msunduzi municipality spokesperson, Madeleine Jackson-Plaatjies, urged residents to report potholes to the municipal call centre. She said that the pothole repair pilot project, which was introduced last year February, was a once off project which lasted for three months. “This has since been completed. Potholes are attended to as an on-going exercise. They are a worrying factor everywhere and develop due to moisture penetrating the underlying road layers and washing out fines, which are gravel materials in road layers that are less than 2mm. “Water or moisture is the main enemy of the road, that is why potholes develop everywhere during the summer rainy season. The other challenge is that potholes cannot be effectively repaired when wet, or if there is high moisture contentintheroadlayers,”explainedJacksonPlaatjies. She said that there are expensive proactive maintenanceactivitiesthatneedtobecontinuously administered to a road a few years down the line after construction. This includes surface overlay, crack sealing, removal of weak spots, eradicating over-loading of roads through management of overloaded heavy vehicles and effective storm-water control. “All these actions ensure that a road lasts longer with minimum road defects. Unfortunately, the municipal roads in the current form areveryoldandtheabovementionedinterventions were not carried out in the past. The road network needs major rehabilitation work which will cost millions of rands. “Currently, the Roads and Transportation unit is updating its Road Asset Management Plan (RAMP), where all roads condition are being assessed. This plan, when complete, will quantify what needs to be done onto our roads infrastructure and costs involved,” she added. To report potholes, residents are urged to call the municipal call centre at 0800 001 868.

a wonderful gift to a mother whose baby is far away. Some tips: •If your mother has passedaway, consider adopting a mother for the day. Nursing homes are often a lonely place, especially on Mother’s Day. Women without families may sit alone all day, watching families come and go, but having no visitors herself. Though it takes some courage, this small deed can change someone’s month, including yours. •Compliment her and make her feel special. •Do not be selfish, do it from the heart. Include other family members. Make her feel like she truly de serves it. Warnings •Do not be selfish and make the day about you. •Don’t bring up past issues. Try to focus on the better times, when she supported one of your decisions, or when she did something silly and made everyone laugh. •It’s not Your Day, it’s Mother’s Day, and if you have brothers and sisters it means she’s a mother to more than just you. Bring the family closer by allowing everyone to show their love and affection for her. http://www.wiki how.com/

Jashvin Pandoo, in Grade 7 at Cordwalles Preparatory School, did very well in the 2013 Beaver Challenge, especially as many Grade six and seven students from schools throughout South Africa participated. A score of 140 is considered phenomenal and last year, Raymond Liversage (dux 2013) scored 156. Pandoo scored an exceptional 164. His score was the highest across 10 other schools in South Africa. This score was shared with another South African student.

Bartman also believes Arrows can still avoid the relegation chop. “It’s still possible to avoid the chop. We did well for the past four games. We can still make it through to the play-offs, provided we do well in our final games. The whole team is sharing one vision and prepared to go all out to fight to stay in the elite league,” said Bartman. On Saturday, Golden Arrows will play their last game against OrlandoPiratesatMosesMabhida Stadium at 3pm.

PIETERMARITZBURG born and current Lamontville Golden Arrows goalkeeper, Arthur Bartman, said that he is far from hanging up his gloves, and his team will survive the relegation chop. Bartman said that he might seriously think about quitting after next season. The former Real Taj, Maritzburg United and ex-Kaizer Chiefs goalminder turned 42 in March, but said that he is still enjoying his game and not yet thinking about calling it a day. “I am enjoying myself at Arrows. My legs, my body can still carry me and I am still feeling lively. More importantly, I still have the hunger and the passion that keeps me going. Age is just a number. I live clean, eat well and rest a lot. I do go out with friends or colleagues but know very well when to call it a night. As a profes-
