Villiers Drive in Clarendon - residents are much more vigilant of any criminal activity in the neighbourhood.

>> Clarendon residents are much more vigilant of any activity in their neighbourhood NICOLE JOHN

>>nicole@pmbfever.co.za

I

N December 2013, residents in the Clarendon area were determined to take back their streets and rid them of criminals and criminal activity following the recent spate of violence experienced in the area. The situation came to a head when a resident and prominent city doctor was raped and left for dead while she was on her morning run. Eager residents have taken to social media to assist with the dissemination of information about any suspicious persons or behaviour in the area, and so the Clarendon Crime Watch initiative was born. The Lower Clarendon Community Association (LCCA), led by Rob Evans, has been instrumental in leading this initiative, with the hope of implementing it through the entire Clarendon suburb. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Rowan White, who assists with the Clarendon Crime Watch Facebook page, said that the initiative has created awareness and residents are much more vigilant of any activity in the neighbourhood, and the SAPS are able to respond accordingly should the need arise. White said that there are currently three Whatsapp groups operating to put all involved

residents in touch with one another, making it possible to send out alerts or photographs of suspicious vehicles or persons in the Clarendon area. “The Bobbies on the Beat continue to patrol the streets, but have become largely ineffective as gangs of criminals have become more sophisticated and more mobile,” said White. A neighbourhood watch has now been in operation for the past four weeks, with pairs of volunteers patrolling the area at different times during the course of the evening. “While these people act purely in an observational capacity, they are in direct communication with and are supported by the SAPS and armed response companies. There are also residents on the lookout during the day while running errands, returning from shopping trips or going about their daily routines,” said White. White confirmed that there has been a significant decrease in criminal activity, with only two cases reported in the last month - a smash and grab from a home and an attempted vehicle theft. “We have a group of very committed night patrol guys in their early twenties, who all work during the day yet go above and beyond to ensure that our streets are safe while everyone else is sleeping,” said White.

The patrols extend all the way to the bottom of Villiers Drive in Prestbury, Taunton and Roberts Roads and all streets within the area. Whitesaidthatthereisdefinitelyaneedformore volunteers for the watch, however he said that those involved in the crime watch continue to be committed. “We will also be securing any vulnerable areas with fencing and razor wire, CCTV cameras will be installed at all entry points to the suburb and eventually throughout the suburb, dependingonthenumberofpeoplewhojointhis initiative. “Residents who subscribe to the association will hopefully have access to all these cameras,” said White. White said that the main objective is to make Clarendon one of the safest suburbs in Pietermaritzburg, where visitors and residents feel safe in the neighbourhood knowing that there are people looking out for their safety. “Obviously this initiative requires 100% community participation, and we appeal to everyone living in the Clarendon area to join us in making our suburb a place where everyone is safe out on the streets and in our homes. “So a message to any criminals visiting Clarendon would be, smile, you are being watched and are probably on camera,” said White.

Municipality deals with electricity theft

THE Msunduzi Municipality has established a special task team that will deal with electricity theft and the abuse of municipal assets. The mayor of Msunduzi, Chris Ndlela, said that from December 23 last year to 2 May this year, 15 criminal cases have been opened at Pietermaritzburg police stations in connections with these two cases. He said that of 30 suspects, eight have been discovered to be Msunduzi

Municipality employees. “We have already dealt with five of these employees internally and will continue in dealing with the remainder.Wewanttosendastrongmessage both to our employees, and those criminals out there, that the theft of resources meant to provide essential services to our people will not be stolen in broad daylight and have an expectation that the municipality will stand aside and watch,” said Ndlela. Electricity losses in the Msunduzi area have cost the municipality exorbitant amounts over the years,

with just more than R122 million in 2012/2013, R119 million in 2011/2012 financial year and R82 million in 2010/ 2011. Last year, municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi told the Executive committee that both businesses and households steal electricity and said that a few cases had been forwarded to the Pietermaritzburg High Court. “A number of flats within the CBD have very high electricity consumption, but the moment you disconnect theirelectricity, theresidentstakeyou to court. We are also fighting a

number of businesses,” said Nkosi. The launch of the task team comes a week after the municipality launched an electrification project of all informal settlements. “We have already started with Nhlalakahle, Ezinketheni and Swapo informal settlements. “All these projects should be completed within the next six months so that we can extend similar services to other informal settlements,” said Ndlela. The electrification project costs R7 million.

All of the accused were charged forpossessionofdaggaandpossession of dangerous weapons. “The said area has been identified as a hot spot area, therefore regular police patrols will continue. When police arrive at the address to carry out stop and search duties, people flee in different directions, afraid of being arrested. However positive arrests were executed,” said Maistry. With regards to the issue of dumping, neighbours have informed the police that the municipality was contacted, however nothing has been done to date. “Our office recommends that the community take a united stand and seek the assistance of the municipal ward councillor in order to rectify the issue of dumping and overgrown grass and trees,” he added. Thobeka Mafumbatha, spokesperson of Msunduzi Municipality, said that there are a number of cases like these in the area. “We are aware and our dedicated team will be addressing the matter urgently. “As for the issue of drugs and criminals, that is a matter that need to be dealt with by SAPS,” she added.

Hospice Casipo launch

>>nicole@pmbfever.co.za

T

HE Msunduzi Hospice Association recently hosted the provincial launch of the Care and Support for Improved Patient Outcomes (CASIPO) programme, which aims to expand and enhance palliative care. CASIPO’s chief of party, Andre’ Wagner, said that they were grateful to the Department of Health for making Hospice a strategic partner and enabling them to develop and emphasize the important of palliative care in South Africa. The idea behind the five year programme, which began in other provinces last year, is to integrate palliative health care into government policies and to get it on the same level of importance as primary health care. “We are excited to be a part of the dramatic changes to improve health care in South Africa, and are committed to support the South African government,” said Wagner. He added that CASIPO is not changing the ways and methods of what palliative health care is currently, but merely enhancing the care that patients receive. “Our primary focus still remains service delivery.” Wagner revealed that not even one percent of Hospice patients are treated in-house; almost all patients

Pictured at the CASIPO Launch are (from left) Doreen Shange, Warren Oxford-Huggett and Mary Moleko. are treated in their homes by caregivers and nurses who go out to visit and care for them, which is why palliative health care training is so important. “With CASIPO we want to change

the delivery of health care in South Africa, we want to build capacity and developmentofpalliativecareandget training included at an undergraduatelevelofstudiesaswellaspostgrad-

HOSPITALS throughout the world celebrated International Nurses Day 2014 on 12 May; honouring those women and men who have dedicated their lives to caring for others. The date chosen celebrates the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The theme this year was ‘Nurses - A vital resource for health’, further emphasizing the importance of nurses when it comes to caring for others and the help they provide to the sick. At various events held at local hospitals, nurses recited their pledge which they first made when they graduatedasnurses.Whileholdingcandles, a symbol of the nurses lamp which is represented at all hospitals, nurses pledged to continue their service of humanity and to endeavour to practise their profession with conscience and with dignity. The event held at Midlands Medical Centre was dedicated to Doctor Dunraj Mani, the founding director of the hospital who passed away during the year. Nurses were thanked for their commitment to the profession, applauded for working long hours but most especially for the care they have for each and every patient they tend to during their time of illness. UMgungundlovu District Municipal Mayor, Yusef Bhamjee, was present at the Netcare St Annes event where he encouraged nurses to continue learning the new developments of medicine, emphasizing that education is key regardless of how long they have been in service for. “Nurses are a universal symbol of compassion and are more often than not the first point of care for patients in need. However, around the world and particularly in South Africa, the work of nurses remains greatly underestimated and undervalued,” said Shannon Nell, director of nursing and nursing education at Netcare.

As part of the Proudly South African theme, Grade 4 boys at Cordwalles Preparatory School experienced the process of voting in a democratic South Africa. Boys had to make an ID and register to vote. Groups were formed to make posters and instead of political parties, boys voted for their favourite chocolate. There was a private voting booth where each boy made a mark on a ballot form before posting their vote in the ballot box. Great excitement was displayed by the boys as they cast their vote and had their nail marked with nail varnish. Crunchies were voted the favourite chocolate.

ASTWOOD Secondary School recently received a generous donation from past pupils Barry Brown and William Nicolson from NMK Forensics in Durban. The sponsorship came following a request from teacher, Brenda Jordan, appealingtopastpupilsoftheschooltohelp improve classrooms. The adopt-a-classroom initiative, implemented by principal Garth Rampaul, would make each teacher responsible for their own classroom and encourage them to get assistance from past pupils and teachers. “In this way, we would each be responsible for securing our classrooms to be done up to assist with our learning and teaching,” said Jordan. Through the use of social media, Jordan

was able to secure a generous sponsorship from NMK Forensics as Nicholson, being a co-founder of the company and Brown a forensic analyst, are past pupils of Eastwood Secondary. Brown and Nicholson donated a smart board for interactive learning, a printer, LED television and three laptops to the school. Jordan said that the technology would be installed in her classroom and teachers would have the opportunity to make use of the equipment when needed for their lessons. “We are sure that this equipment will be put to good use and go a long way in making education more efficient and learning more desirable,” said Brown. Past pupils willing to make any contributions towards the adopt-a-classroom initiative are encouraged to contact the school.

• to give drama students and their teachers the opportunity to create and rehearse pieces of dance theatre for public performance; and •toenableyoungpeopletoseethat movement, dance and dance theatre is accessible to them and not only in the hands of professional adult dance companies.
