HE Pietermaritzburg Airport has displaced the Richards Bay Airport as the second busiest airport in KZN. According to research by the KZN Treasury department, this trend has been thriving since 2010. Treasury’s general manager of infrastructure management and economic services, Dr Clive Coetzee, said that PMB Airport passenger numbers have been increasing annually between 20 000 and 25 000 since 2010. Since 2010, the monthly average number of travellers passing through the PMB Airport was 4 933 in 2010, 7 670 in 2011, 8 577 in 2012, 9 158 in 2013 and 9 776 thus far in 2014. HERE is a new chief in town. The outspoken Thobeka Mafumbatha is the new marketing and communications manager for Msunduzi Municipality. “I want to make the city of Pietermaritzburg a brand. People have said a lot of things about coming here. I am a Christian and I believe that God will not take me where He will not be able to sustain me. I am here to give it my best,” said Mafumbatha. She said the first few days have been very hectic. “On my first day I had to hit the groundrunning.Therewasnotimeto catch my breath. There is support from the people I work with which is amazing, and everybody is doing
their best to assist,” she said. Mafumbatha was born on 5 December 1982 in Bizana, in the Eastern Cape. “That is where I did my primary school education. I then moved to Durban where I did my high school at Ridge Park College. I then studied at the Durban University of Technology (Dut) where I obtained my diploma in public relations management. “I then furthered my studies by enrolling at Damelin where I did fundamentals of project management,” she explained. Mafumbatha has worked for O.R. Tambo District Municipality as the senior communications officer for five years, and the KZN South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) as the assistant manager for communications and marketing since 2007.

Mafumbatha’s current projects include the Golden Horse Sprint, the 175th Pietermaritzburg celebration and Ukhozi FM’s 54th birthday. “I believe that the marketing and communications unit is the heart of every organization. We have such iconic landmarks and such wonderful events that are taking place. I want
the municipality’s marketing and communications department to be positioned at the operations of the municipality. “That will take some time because first we need to have a marketing and communications department that is fully fledged. The experience has beenoverwhelmingbutexciting,”she said.

>>nicole@pmbfever.co.za THE annual bread distribution took place at Jonathan’s City Spar recently, with 17 welfare organizations receiving their portion of the 2 200 loaves which were donated by Kay Makan. Makan has been making this contribution, with the help of the Community Chest, for the last 23 years. He appeals to his customers to donate towards the cause and each year, the bread is given to him at cost price by Jonathan’s City Spar. “Mr Makan always strives to lend a helping hand to the disadvantaged children and adults in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas and holds the work of the Community Chest close to his heart,” said Angie Narayanan. She explained that the Community Chest manages and coordinates this community upliftment venture, ensuring that only the most needy welfare organization receive the bread. “This is the 23rd year that we have been donatingbreadtowelfareorganizationsviathe Community Chest. “We want to thank all role players in this initiative who make this bread distribution possible,” said Makan.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Coetzee added that the PMB Airport has become a viable alternative to the King Shaka International Airport.He said that the numbers will double in less than five years from now. “The money that we have spent on the airport is worth every cent. From the local municipality to private operators and provincial government, they have all spent money on that airport. The numbers contradict what a lot of people have previously said about airport upgrades being a waste of money. “There is life in that airport. The numbers may have increased but we have not seen half of it. There are big plans that are geared for that airport. Unfortunately we can’t at this stage say too much,” said Coetzee. Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association (MPTA) director Dumisani Mhlongo said that the municipality plans to assist in the positioning of the PMB Airport as a convenience for Pinetown and Kloof residents. He said that the growth in the airport passenger figures indicate a positive outcome for the city’s economy. Mhlongo said that he is excited that at one of the meetings that he attended at the recent Tourism iNdaba, which was held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban, one of the airlines vowed to contribute to the improvement of the PMB Airport passenger traffic. Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB) CEO Melanie Veness, said that as Pietermaritzburg is the capital city of the province, it is an important city from a government perspective and as a centre of business. “It is good news for the whole region. It also highlights the strategic importance of the Pietermaritzburg Airport, which plays a critical role in facilitating economic development in the district,” said Veness. It has been reported that the PMB Msunduzi Airport, previously known as Oribi Airport, was first licensed by the Civil Air Board in March 1931 and it was officially reopened in July 1967 after extensive renovations. “What we have seen is the doubling of rental cars at the airport and there has been an increase in overnight stay accommodation. The services industry around the airport are starting to benefit, and these are mostly established businesses. “One needs to look and see what opportunities are available,” said Coetzee. Coetzee said that the airport needs to get 200 000 passengers a year for them to see a lot of economic growth in the city. “Oncewegetto200000,wewillseesparksflying.What that will mean is that we will have to prioritize conference facilities,” he said. As the airport is growing, Coetzee said there will be no reason to relocate it elsewhere. “For the next 20 to 30 years there is absolutely no reason why we need to relocate the airport.”

NTOWARD activities said to be taking place at a home in Larkspur Road have been noticed by the Mountain Rise Police station following complaints from concerned citizens. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, a source alleges that an illegal shebeen is operating from one of the homes in the area, causing a nuisance to the neighbours. The patrons at the shebeen are alleged to be violent and in one instance, threw bottles at the neighbours and stones at a neighbour’s window, cracking it and causing damage. The source said that the patrons are vulgar and disorderly. “They drink on the road and perform when intoxicated. There have been many fights in the area between neighbours and patrons.” It is further alleged that the shebeen

operates 24-hours a day and the children in the area are at risk. “People cannot take the children outside to play because they fear what might happen in the event of a fight breaking out. They also don’t want to expose the children to the behaviour, especially young girls,” said the source. Warrant officer, Joshua Maistry, at the Mountain Rise station said that an officer from the station visited the premises and confirmed that there are some activities taking place, however no alcohol was found on the premises. “According to information at the station, in 2012 the owner was charged andthatstoppedallactivities.OurCrime Prevention Unit has been tasked to keep observationonthesaidpremisesandact if necessary,” he said. VARSITY College Pietermaritzburg recently hosted their annual graduation ceremony for their diploma and certificate students at the City Hall, a fitting venue for this highlight in a student’s academic life. The event was attended by family, friends and invited guests all sharing in the 83 graduates’ finest moment. Peter Kriel, head of faculty: Business of the Independent Institute of Education, conferred the diplomas and certificates to the group of excited, although nervous, students. >>nicole@pmbfever.co.za A MARCH celebrating the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) took place for the first time in Pietermaritzburg recently. IDAHO is internationally celebrated throughout the world by all homosexuals who have braved the ridicule of society as a homosexual person. On this day, those who have been victimised because of their sexuality and those who continue to combat homophobia and hate crimes are remembered. The first IDAHO took place ten years ago and has since established itself as the single most important date for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersexed (LGBTI) communities to mobilise on a worldwide scale. The celebration is not centralised to one event, but rather is focused on being a moment and incorporating itself into every community to raise awareness.
The date, 17 May was chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. The Gay and Lesbian Network (GLN) commemorated IDAHO, remembering the many LGBTI people across the world who face ongoing discrimination, hate crimes and even murder as a result of their sexual orientation. “We cannot forget the black lesbians in South Africa who are brutally assaulted, raped and even murdered because of their sexual preferences. It is hoped that this march highlighted the plight of LGBTIs in our society to the Pietermaritzburg community and created awareness of what LGBTI people go through every day,” said Anthony Waldhausen, GLN director. He added that the march also created a space for LGBTI’s and the rest of the community to stand up against all forms of homophobia and hatecrimesbutmostofalltobeunited in the cause of the LGBTI people.
HERE are many changes happening at Netcare St Anne’s Pietermaritzburg. The most recent is the appointment of Ashika Norman and Felicity Basson as nursing manager and deputy nursing manager respectively. Norman has been at the hospital since 1998, when she was a brand new registered nurse. She moved through the ranks as the years went by and last year, was appointed as deputy nursing manager and was quickly promoted to nursing manager in January this year. “All I can say is that when you stay in this company, you grow and becomemoreempowered.Iamhappy to be a part of the change that is taking place here,” said Norman. She said that they have a good team of highly specialized nurses and that she plans to capitalize on that by offering a mentorship programme to empower younger nurses. Norman is joined by Basson who has over 25 years of experience in the nursing field. Born and bred in Pietermaritzburg, Basson worked as a staff nurse at the hospital in 1993. She recently returned from East London where she was managing two hospitals and was appointed deputy nursing manager at Netcare St Anne’s at the beginning of April. “Thisisstillmyhomeanditisvery nice to be able to come back here. It is the biggest honour to come back to the hospital in a different capacity. I come with more experience and

I know there will be challenges but I am eager to begin,” said Basson. Hospital manager, Louis Joubert, said that they are slightly ahead of schedule in terms of the building expansion project, which includes an increase in the number of beds at the hospital. He said that they will be offering an enhanced service of disease
profiling which will cater for patient’s individual needs. Parking, which remains an issue at the hospital, will also be addressed during the project developments. “We are the most specialized hospital in the midlands area and we want to thank the people of Pietermaritzburg for the patience and support during the developments at the hospital,” said Joubert.
Simon Weaver, headmaster of Cordwalles Preparatory School, hosted a successful and well attended workshop on ‘Creating HurtFree Schools’. The workshop was designed for teachers from many schools throughout KwaZuluNatal to share ideas and develop strategies that assist children to become responsible and respectful citizens who do not purposefully hurt and bully others. Their aim through all of this is to develop a schooling en vironment where children are happy, safe and secure, which in turn results in the opportunity for optimum learning to take place. GE spots, sun spots, dark spots, uneven brown patches not only on the face but also on hands, decolletage, shoulders and body. UVA light stimulates your pigment cells [melanocytes] to manufacture more pigment called mellanin. Melanocytes are pigment-producing cells. Melanin production is increased by age, acne, hormone fluctuation, sun exposure and inflammation which can cause irregular darkening of the skin. The sun can, over time, lead to noticable changes in the appearances of the skin. People with darker skin tones are more prone to developing melasma [pigmentation]. It usually appears on the cheeks, chin, foreheadandupper-
lip. Melasma is a condition that requires treatment and management. The first method of treating pigmentation is to prevent its appearance from gettingworsebyapplyinga sunscreen daily. Even if its cloudy or overcast, UV light is still reflected and present. Also, take extra precautions such as wearing a wide brimmed hat,using an umbrella or wearing protective clothing. A good effective skincare regime should be practised daily and should be prescribed by a skincare therapist.
Over the counter products will help if you have minimalpigmentation,but not if you have white spread pigmentation. One should also consider skin peels, microdermabrasion, laser and micro-needling. Peeling treatments renew the skin by lifting dead cells off the skins surface and stimulate the metabolism of cells underneath. OCAL hip-hop artist Siyanda Khoza, famously known in the music business as ‘StyleZ’, recently shot his first music video in Pietermaritzburg. The video shoot was for his debut music single, Money Right. The music video was shot over two days in April. The first day of the video shoot was at the Scottsville Mall fashion store Fierce, and the second day of the shoot was spent in the vicinity of Theatre Lane, right at the heart of the city. Khoza is from Imbali and in 2000, he matriculated at Carter High. “I shot the music video in
Pietermaritzburg because I am from the city. By doing this, I am raising the PMB flag. Money Right will be available in summer as a musicsingle.Arapperandproducer named Phatmouse Da Grindsmith and Stha ‘Star’ Mkhize assisted in directing the music video,” said Khoza. Khoza currently resides in Gauteng where he is not only pushing his music business, but he also sells advertising space for a local website. He also coaches academy soccer for Maritzburg Sport Academy of Excellence (MSAE). In 1996, Khoza was part of a local hip-hop group called Rhyme n Reazon. Over the years, he has achieved greatsuccessbycollaboratingwith
other South African artists such as Maggz, Omen, Rashid, Kruna and M.X.O. In 1999, Khoza took second place on the now defunct YFM radioshowcalledRapActivityJam ,which was then hosted by Rude Boy Paul and DJ Oskido. In 2002 he performed at Durban’s Red Eye 5 festival, and the following year he was part of a radio jingle for Cape Town’s free hip-hop publication called CORE, where he sang alongside South African hip-hop starts such as Hip Hop Pantsula, Amu and Lebo Mashile2003. In 2004, Khoza took first prize at YFM’s annual ESPN and DSTV’s MultiChoice hip-hop and basketball event. In 2006 he won 5FM’s

condition, romance, conspiracy theories and paranormal. The album is best classified as ‘alternative folk pop’. HE gates to the 2014 Royal Show will open this Friday, 23 May at 9am. Over 1 500 livestock will be on site and the Show will host the Border Leicester, Hampshire Down and Suffolk National Championships. There will be a range of exhibitions, including a milking parlour, display of indigenous goats, sheep shearing, a wool and fibre exhibition and more. There will also be a bird and rabbit show. The nine halls of the show will see a mix of commercial and industrial exhibitions, and a wide range of services including the Mercury Hall of Fine Living. In partnership with the South African Police Services, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions,
the Departments of Justice and Correctional Services, as well as Safe City, the hall of safety and security is expected to host interesting information. The entire show is a package deal of entertainment, industry, livestock and more and is often regarded as ‘second to none’ on the annual provincial calendar. There will also be a host of musical performances by the KZN Symphony Orchestra, Watershed, Gangs of Ballet, Prime Circle, Steve Hofmeyr, Carla Botha, Tuis die Bosveldklong and Jak de Priester, as well as the popular Radio Hindvani Eastern Extravaganza and the Ukhozi FM concerts on the final weekend. Gate entry charges are R50 for adults and R35 for children under 12 and pensioners.
Mi Casa at Golden Horse SOUTH African house band, Mi Casa, willbemakingtheirthirdappearance at the Golden Horse Casino, headlining the Sprint Day after party on Saturday, 24 May at 9pm. FEVER REPORTER THE 52nd edition of the Nashua Art in the Park begins today, 21 May and will run until 25 May, a little earlier than usual. This year there are 55 artists exhibitingtheirwork,someofwhom havebeendoingsoforoveradecade. Among the talent will be top selling artists from last year, Ingrid and Lean Fouche’ as well as a comeback from renowned sand-painter, Mat Louwrens. One of the new additions to the exhibition is the inclusion of developing artists identified by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts
and Culture. Another addition is the school competition where, in partnership with Lifeline Pietermaritzburg, 20 schools from underprivileged
communities competed for a chance to exhibit their work at the event. Children were judged based on their artistic interpretations of the theme ‘happiness’.

IS Windows 8 really that bad? Often at our store, we hear phrases that run along lines of: “Is it running Windows 8? I don’t want it, Windows 8 is terrible”. It has been a source of worry to us for quite some time as we all use and love it. We started asking people what their problem is with Windows 8, and have been given very few straight answers. Most people who avoid Windows 8 have been told to do so by a friend. The only reasonable issue we have been faced with regarding Windows 8 has been a lack of understanding. Windows 8 has a new interface and a new way of doing things. When using a new interface on any kind of system, you are often slowed up during the learning process, which in turn can be very frustrating when you are under pressure or in a rush working against the clock. What is important in this understanding is that newer systems are also optimised systems. Windows 8, coupled with the latest Intel hardware, will out-perform any other older device in actual hardware speed and user performance. Our advice regarding Windows 8 is to visit Computer World for a 10 minute crash course on Windows 8. Once you realise, understand and reap the benefits, there will be no going back!

The St John’s U16A hockey team played in the inaugural St Mary’s U16 tournament in the Easter holidays. They ended up winning the pool and played The Wykeham Collegiate in the semifinal, which St John’s won 3 – 1. The final was a very tight match against St Mary’s U16A at full time the score was a 1–1 draw. After the eight second sudden death penalty shootout, St John’s won the tournament. HERE has been much huff and puff recently by the powers that be expressingdispleasureatwhatisconsideredthe slow pace of transformation in players of colour into our senior provincial and national sports teams. Yes, it is true, but the reason why is largely because the incorrect model is being used at senior level to effect that change and for this, the powers that be should look at themselves. Yet at junior, grassroots level, the answer has been easily found. At high school there are an ever-increasing number of outstanding players of colour (POCs) in those establishments’ first teams. Go and watch primary school sport and the number of POC is even greater - the result is a natural transition brought about by a simple, consistent policy. Merit is all that matters - and as far as is practical, every child is given the opportunity to prove themselves. The consequence is that no child, POC or white-skinned, can legitimately claim they have been discriminated against. Yes of course there will always be the disgruntled few, white or POC, who feel they should be in a higher team. That is healthy - it
indicates the degree of competition that drives standards of play up. My own son feels he is B team material, not C. That’s what will make him try even harder to become better. I have seen it numerous times over recent years but it never ceases to thrill me. At Pelham last Saturday, the rugger against Cordwalles was hectic and I saw black ladies screaming their delight when Sipho took the ball at pace to cross the gain line. The vociferous Zulu support for the Pelham lads was highly amusing, even though I didn’t understand a word. There was a Zulu-speaking lady congratulating her Cordies boy in English on the great game he had. There was plenty of white support, too, and the crowd vibe was convivial and generous. There were some very promising white boys showing their skills but, my word, it never ceases to thrill me when I see a POC effecting a technically perfect tackle or pick-and-drive. Sadly, many children of colour will never ever know if they might have had the talent to excel in, say, cricket, rugby or hockey because there is absolutely nothing to offer at these schools. Atthatistherealtragedy,ohpowersthatbe. You have got to start at grassroots - and there will be more on this subject next week.

HE annual gathering of KwaZulu-Natal’s young aspiring rugby playerstakesplaceatWoodburn Stadium from 22 to 24 May for the SPAR KZN Primary School’s Rugby Tournament. The tournament, now in its seventeenth year, will have six regions participating over the three days: Northern Natal, Southern Coastals, Durban Coastals, Pinetown and Districts, Zululand and the Midlands. There will be three divisions each with 330 boys competing in the hope of being selected to represent their province. The Merit Division, or the U13A teams, will be hoping to make the team
that stays in Durban for the Craven Week later this year. The U13B team will select a team that will travel to Sasolburg to play in the interprovincial there and finally the U12 age group hope to identify players who will travel to Vryheid later in the season for the U12 interprovincial. Heroes of the modern day game have all started their competitive careers at this tournament such as Patrick Lambie, former Sharks player now representing England Bradley Barrett, Matt Stevens who has played for Saracens and England and Sharks, Saracens and Springbok player Alistair Hargreaves to name but a few.
“It is fantastic to see the eagerness at this level amongst all the boys. This tournament has proven itself to be an essential ingredient in grooming future players and we at Spar are delightedtobeapartofitforthesecond year,” said MD for SPAR KZN, Rob Philipson. The games kick off on Thursday with nine games on the programme. Teams go head to head on Friday with the finals and the awards ceremony taking place on Saturday.
