Filth angers Retief Street businesses
USINESS owners along Retief Street have slammed the Msunduzi Municipality for not taking on the responsibility of cleaning the dirty and blocked drains along this busy street. These owners say that the municipality has neglected to provide municipal services for the local business district along Retief Street, one of the busiest business district areas in Pietermaritzburg. Lined with filth and concrete rubble, the business owners say that Retief Street has been an eyesore to the public for many years. Seeing that their cries fell on deaf ears, these business owners took matters into their own hands by rolling up their sleeves and cleaning the filthy street. “Can somebody tell me what the municipality is doing? We are the ratepayers of the city and yet we clean the streets ourselves. Why is it that we must clean whereas there are people at the municipality whose responsibility it is to clean the streets? “The mayor usually talks of
lawlessness but he does not know the meaning of it. The Msunduzi managers are only interested in themselves. The general public needs to be taught about keeping their city clean and the municipality needs to provide dust bins for the Retief Street area,” stated one business owner. With the Public Urban Renewal Programme (Purp) underway, piles of concreterubblewereleftuncollected. The project is expected to face-lift the streets of Pietermaritzburg and, among many other elements, involves the upgrade of city pavements. Nonhlanhla Mngomeni from Northdale said that the municipality should meet the demands of its rate payers. “Lack of service delivery affects both residents and businesses. It is about time that municipal management comes down hard on street cleaners. If they are not doing their job, then what do they get paid for?” she asked. Last week Monday, the Msunduzi Municipality’s communications unit was sent a media query but at the time of going to print, the municipality had failed to respond.

The imbizos are a legal requirement of local government. Municipalitiesarerequiredtogooutandconsult with communities on what they want to go into their town’s Integrated

Those attending are supplied lunch and entertainment is provided. Many councillors, including Mayor Chris Ndlela, felt that Pietermaritzburgers across the city should make an effort to attend the imbizos to mix and learn about the different areas and each other. Ndlela said that municipalities
share government’s responsibility to bring about social cohesion and nation building. He said five imbizos were held, representing the five zones the city has been divided into. “We would not like to prescribe to people about what to do, but the invitation is open to make use of such opportunities and attend the meetings in your zone,” the mayor said. Ndlela used the imbizos to inform residents of the progress made by the city in the past year. These included:

The mayor outlined a host of pro-
jects in the various departments, including concrete maintenance plans being put in place for all services. Ndlela also used the imbizos to remind residents of their civic responsibilities: paying for services, keeping the city clean and not damaging municipal infrastructure. He told communities that electricity theft was hurting the city and cost the country R90 million in the past financial year..

S the sun set behind thunderclouds over Pietermaritzburg on Friday night, two police stations began to mobilise for a crime prevention operation. The Pietermaritzburg and Mountain Rise stations embarkedona12-hourfestive season high-density crime operation, which lasted from 4pm on Friday afternoon into the early hours of Saturday. It began with a roadblock set up on Chota Motala Road near the graveyard. As the rain started to pour down, officers swarmed the roadside and pulled over vehicles, while others took off on foot to patrol surrounding areas. As the night progressed, all types of criminals were hauled into the two stations. The
Large quantities of drugs seized in festive season bust Mountain Rise station apprehended more than 27 people suspected of crimes, including rape, house robbery, illegal possession of drugs and dealing in drugs. Drunken drivers were also booked. During the raid, the police recovered an array of items. Large quantities of dagga and heroin were taken off the streets and lots of liquor was seized from unlicensed liquor premises. One unlicensed 9 mm firearm was also seized. According to Warrant Officer Joshua Maistry of Mountain Rise police station, the gun would be tested to ascertain if it was used in crimes. The arrested suspects would soon appear in the PMB Magistrate’s Court.
Maistry estimated that the recovered items are valued at over R100 000. Provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni and Pietermaritzburg acting cluster commander Brigadier Francis Bantham visited the officers during the operation and applauded them for their efforts. Members of the community were also thanked for giving police information that resulted in several arrests.

Ukhozi FM’s summer campaign questioned NQOBILE MTOLO
>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za UKHOZI FM is hosting its annual summer campaign until 20 December, in a bid to encourage youth to live positive lives. For six years, Ukhozi FM had organized the summer campaigns under the banner Nyus’ iVolume. The main theme of this year’s campaign is

‘Drugs and Drugs Abuse’. The campaign costs R100 000. Ukhozi FM approached the Msunduzi Municipality to be a partner of the event. This raised a number of views at the recent Executive Committee (Exco) meeting. “This is a lot of money. Is there any way that we can measure how much benefit it has for the city? According to some people, Ukhozi is a wealthy organization, they have millions of listeners and they have a lot o f advertising. If we are going to give them this money, are we really going to get R100 000 worth of benefits from this?” asked Exco member Judith Lawrence. Exco member Jabu Ngubo said that the summer campaign will help the municipality to disseminate service delivery matters and mayoral izimbizo. “Asamunicipality, wecanbenefitinterms of reaching out to the communities. Very soon, the mayor will be starting with izimbizo. This can be used as a tool to tell people what they can expect at izimbizo and also to inform people as to what we do as the municipality. Looking at the fact that this will be happening over the festive season, it also puts some vibrancy into our city as we are known as a quiet city and a sleepy hollow,” said Ngubo. Exco member Ntokozo Bhengu said that Ukhozi FM will be a communication channel for spreading information on the importance of paying for municipal services. “I support the initiative, provided that we use the platform from Ukhozi FM to encourage the people of Msunduzi to come and pay for their services because there is a backlog. People are not paying,” said Bhengu. Early this month, it was unveiled that government departments, residents and businesses owe the Msunduzi Municipality R1,8 billion and that by end of July this year, the debt was around R1,5 billion. Ordinary residents owed the municipality R975 million, businesses owed R364 million while government departments and other debtors owed the municipality R164 million and R138 million respectively. Msunduzi mayor Chris Ndlela said that the opportunity will also be used to address the public on what challenges the municipality is confronted with.

MAN was shot in the head when he allegedly tried to rob another man sitting in his car at the corner of Boshoff and Langalibalele streets late on Monday. According to a police source who cannot be named, a man approached another man in his car and demanded his belongings. The man then pulled out his firearm and shot the alleged would-be robber in the head and again in the chest. The source said the second bullet went through the alleged robber’s leg and hit a bystander in the leg. ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the bystander had not even realised she had been shot and thought something had jumped up and bitten her. Meiring said although the alleged robber was stabilised on scene, he was in a critical condition. He was taken to Grey’s Hospital. “Gunshot wounds to the head

the incident took place. “There were a lot of rumours going around about what happened but all we saw was someonerunningpastouroffices,” said Bandu. “Every hour someone is pickpocketed on this corner. I have worked here 25 years and it has

ENWYN Retirement Home in Pietermaritz Street recently celebrated its 21st birthday. The retirement home staff and residents celebrated the milestone with a champagne breakfast and a lateafternoonbraaiinthecourtyard. Kenwyn was named after Ken and Winsome Collins, who had given the property to Padca as an independent retirement home in 1983. The building had been standing since 1901. Kenwyn manager Petro Fourie said Kenwyn is a home away from home and is a quiet oasis located near busy streets. “We are very excited that the Kenwyn Retirement Home is celebrating its 21st birthday. When you come here, you get prepared for the frail care phase; however we are not a frail care retirement home. We always look after the needs of our residents and we do celebrate special days. “As soon as you walk inside our premises the atmosphere feels

We know their families and they know our families. The managers live on the premises throughout the year so that we can attend to the residents’ needs. “We pride ourselves on serving a balanced diet and balanced meals. We eat pudding every single day. Unfortunately, our residents are spoilt rotten,” added Fourie with a laugh. She said that it is important for residents to bring their own furniture, except for hot plates and stoves. “We believe that if they are surrounded by their personal stuff they feel more at home,” she said. Thanks to the officer I WOULD like to thank Warrant Officer Ngubane from the Loop Street Police Station for his great service and customer care. After an accident, I went to the Alexandra Police Station to report the incident. The front desk directed me to the Accident Unit’s office. After waiting an hour for assistance, I was told to
report the incident to the front desk.Thewarrantofficersinformed me that the system was slow and they could not assist me, and that I should go to the Loop Street Police Station. Arriving at the Loop Street Police Station, the runaround started yet again. Finally, I ended up at the door of Ngubane, who was extremely professional and diligent. The matter was sorted out within a few minutes and I had the report number I needed. I want to thank him for his professionalism and real community service. It’s great knowing that a man of his calibre is in the service assisting the community. P. VAN STRAATEN Pietermaritzburg
Where South Africa is going... ON a recent visit to the Dominican Republic,Icaughtaglimpseofwhere South Africa is going. Theft of electricity is so bad that the power utility can only provide electricity for less than half the day. Everyone of means has batteries, an inverter and generator too. The poor go without. Business suffers dreadfully. The

Why no ‘imbizo’ in the northern areas? T
HE ANC-led council is embarking on the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) imbizo with fanfare, at a time when the city is deep in debt. The rationale remains inexplicable. The IDP imbizos are intended primarily to present development plans for the different parts of the city and the overall growth plans for the city. Sadly, the ANC exploits this roadshow to lobby for the party. About 10 000 residents in selected areas from Vulindlela to the northern areas (Eastwood and Woodlands)
have been targeted, buses have been arranged and Sassa (South African SocialSecurityAgency)willbevisible, distributing food vouchers in areas where the ANC needs votes. The IDP roadshow is not going to the greater northern areas (Northdale, Orient Heights, Allandale, Raisethorpe and Bombay Heights). Interested ratepayers will be bused to another venue, ignoring the huge, stable, rate-paying base in the northern areas that qualifies for the IDP briefing. Are we being punished for being staunch DA supporters while
Life is a strange wheel ISN’T life a strange wheel? One minute we are sailing in the clouds, living the dream and sipping from exotic streams. We watch people on the other side of the street living miserable lives, working so hard with no reward, and battling to make ends meet. Then suddenly, boom! Without any notice, we find ourselves uprooted from that life of luxury and are flung to the other side of the road. Our lives are turned upside down and we have to try and pick up the pieces and make a new beginning
from nothing. In some cases, especially when we become arrogant, wasteful, stingy and think that whatever we have achieved is a result of our own intelligence, then we are certainly on a head on collision course with our Creator. We will lose dearly. How often have we seen empires crash? How often have we seen mega rich families, that once lived in a glass mansion, now squatting in a tiny one bedroom flat. So what went wrong? Was it poor planning? Was it tough economic times? Was it reckless investing?
our punctual monthly payments from utility bills and extreme rates are devoured by the ANC in council? Notwithstanding being snubbed for an IDP meeting, we remain resilient to ANC victimisation. The DA will continue to play the oversight role in council (like in Parliament) and civic-minded ratepayers must put pen to paper and expose ANC incompetence in the media. JAY JUGWANTH Pietermaritzburg
No, unfortunately it was none of the above. If we ask ourselves a few questions, we will find the answers. In most cases we will find that initially, when one starts up a business, they are generous, humble and very God fearing. We then start to prosper and the business steadily progresses. Soon, margins, profit and figures seem to dominate our lives. Our generosity decreases, our compassion for others diminishes and we start turning to overdrafts and credit to satisfy our lust for more. These are just some of the reasons that will cause our self destruction. ASE AMEEN Mountain Rise

IT is a fact that in South Africa, a lot of our children have chosen to emigrate or move to other countries. Often people who live in South Africa and write out a will are concerned as to whether or not overseas heirs can indeed receive their inheritance, given the fact that they no longer live here. It seems that a lot of people leave South Africa without formally emigrating, and it is a common thought among a large number of thepeoplewhohaveleftSouthAfrica, that, oncetheyhaveobtained citizenship in another country, it means that they have formally emigrated from SA. This is however not correct. Often a person making a will also believes that the executor of his/her estate can simply “put a cheque in the post” to give an overseas heir his/her inheritance. It would be very convenient if this were the case, but unfortunately, due to foreign exchange requirements, it is not as simple as that. It is possible to pay an inheritance to an overseas heir in a variety of manners: 1. Into an account the overseas heir may nominate in South Africa An heir living overseas may instruct the executor to pay his/her inheritance into a bank account in South Africa. 2. Off shore allowance. It is possible in certain circumstances for an overseas heir to receive his/her inheritance as part of his/her offshore allowance. This would apply where such overseas heir has not formally emigrated. In order to do so the following is required: a)The overseas heir must have tax clearance from the South African Revenue Service (SARS); b)Tax clearance is used by SARS to certify that SARS has, after ORDERS TAKEN checking its records, found that the taxpayer named on the Tax FOR WEDDING, clearance certificate is compliant, has filed all required annual tax returns and has paid all taxes, penalties, and interest due as of the BUFFET AND date the Tax clearance certificate is issued. c)SARS must issue, or decline to issue, the certificate within 21 TABLE business days from the date the application is duly filed. ‘PMB turns into a hub of fashion’
New rhythm and poetry venue in the capital city
Neliswa Mntungwa is host of the Rhythm And Poetry Sessions at the Red Door. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
PIETERMARITZBURG’S live music venue, the Red Door in Quarry Road, will host Rhythm and Poetry Sessions on Saturday afternoons starting at 1pm. The sessions are being held in collaboration with Brian dot Khoza and the idea is to hold them monthly in 2015. “Rhythm And Poetry Sessions are about urban voices, whether rapping, singing or spoken-word poetry, and will be a build-up to an annual hip-hop festival called Rhythm And Poetry Fest,” Khoza said. “They will be held at the Red Door at monthly intervals. The theme will be gender dynamics or relationships between men and women, boys and girls, a topic close to my heart.” The Rhythm and Poetry Sessions will feature music listening sessions, performances and music sales by artists in a safe concert venue with a bar and pool tables. The sessions will be hosted by Neliswa Mntungwa, owner and founder of Fusion Productions SA, which hosts events and projects to empower people, including the Beauty Boot Camp for women. Maritzburg rap king StyleZ, has had several songs on national and regional radio, andhasrecordedwithHHPandMXO. IETERMARITZBURG transformed into a hub of fashion at the weekend as the School of Fashion celebrated 49 years with their Fashion Show, which they described as a “glamorous affair”. A total of 52 design students graduated and showcased their stunning collections on the catwalk. The talent was said to be so well received by the fashionistas and celebrity fashion VIPs, that five awards were added and fashion week opportunities awarded to more designers, with opportunities to further their studies. The hall was packed to capacity with the audience dressed in style. “It was a night filled with glitz and glamour but what stood out was the sparkling talent of the students of the School of Fashion,” said School of Fashion director Priscilla Bhika. Bhika said she was very proud of the students, who have continuously put PMB on the fashion map by winning numerous fashion competitions and showcasing their talents and producing quality garments which are of international level. “Next year, the School of Fashion Design will celebrate 50 years. And so the preparations for another brilliant show begins,” she said. Supplied.

Monique Gladding, an Olympic 10m diver and representative of Fillabag.org, visited Howick High School earlier this month to share with the pupils the fundamental qualities that Olympians have to guide them to success, and how they can develop these qualities to help them achieve their own goals and dreams. Each pupil was given a bag to fill with things that could be useful to others in need, such as clothes, blankets, food, kitchen/household wares, etc. The donated items will be distributed to people in need throughout the KwaZulu-Natal area. Howick High School’s headmaster, Rob Langley (L), was pleased to send a full van of charity donations to the Fillabag.org headquarters with their KZN distribution manager, Nkosinathi Sihlophe.

“I
THINK my destiny was linked to Pelham from the moment that I was born,” said outgoing Pelham Senior Primary School principal, and rugby enthusiast, Louis Botha (63). After spending 37 years at Pelham, Botha is saying goodbye to the school which he has called his home for years. Botha’s last day will be on 31 December. “While I was at Newcastle High School, my guidance teacher told me that I would not be suitable for tertiary education and suggested that I go for a trade. The very next day I phoned a local teachers’ training college and I was able to secure a loan to study at the training college. “In 1971, 1972 and 1973 I was at training college.
During that time, when I was a student, I did my practical teaching at Pelham,” said Botha. Atthattime,Botha’sdream of working at Pelham was short-lived when he was given a transfer to another school. After spending about three years in the teaching profession, Botha resigned and went on a European tour with his wife. “We went to Egypt, Israel, Greece, England, Spain and Portugal. While we were doing that, my wife fell pregnant. While overseas, I wrote to the education department and told them that I would like to come back and teach. “While I was in Amsterdam, I got a letter to say that I could come back and teach at Pelham. In 1977, I started at Pelham and I have been here ever since,” said
Botha. “At Pelham I started as a physical education sports master. A couple of years later I was promoted to the HOD position. I have also taught the Grade seven classes. “Before I became principal in 1990, I was the deputy principal. I have always loved coming to school. Real teachers are not made, they are born,” said Botha with pride. He said that teaching has been the most fantastic and enriching moment in his life. “Successful schools are happy schools. I am so happy to leave because the school is in a good position and the staff are wonderful. “I am not happy to leave Pelham but I am satisfied and proud to leave Pelham considering where the school is right now and what it has achieved,” said Botha.

New turbodiesel fills the perfect spot in Hyundai’s ix35 range
H
YUNDAI has added a new turbodiesel derivative to their very popular ix35 range in South Africa, combining a frugal Euro 5 emission standards engine with a well-positioned specification level that will make this addition to their SUV line-up a very lucrative offer. The addition of the ix35 1.7 Premium with its 85 kW, 260 Nm turbocharged diesel engine expands the range of this SUV model of Hyundai Automotive South Africa to 7 derivatives. The power mill’s 1 685 cc capacity is slightly smaller than the 1 995 cc engine of its ix35 2.0 Elite turbodiesel partner in the range, but it generates more than enough power and torque, with lower emissions. “The ix35 has been one of the strongest pillars in Hyundai Automotive SA’s vehicle range, and when we were given the opportunity to bring the 1.7 Premium turbodiesel to the South African customers, there was no hesitation. We expect this derivative to appeal to an SUV buyer who is looking for the benefits of a frugal turbodiesel engine, but at a more affordable price and withaspecificationlevelthatstillofferstheluxury driving experience that made the ix35 a topseller for us,” says Stanley Anderson, marketing director of Hyundai Automotive SA. In the engine bay of the ix35 1.7 Premium is a four-cylinder engine that delivers 85 kW peak power at 4 000 rpm, and a solid 260 Nm peak torque in a range between 1 250 and 2 750 rpm. The engine conforms to Euro 5 emission standards that define the acceptable limits for exhaust emissions of new vehicles sold in member states of the European Union.
In a combined test cycle it delivers fuel consumption of 6,5 litres per 100 km, and lower CO2 emissions of 139 g/km. An improved six-speed gearbox with slightly different ratios than that of its two-litre turbodiesel partner delivers the power to the front wheels. Its top speed has been clocked at 173 km/h, and acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h takes 12,4 seconds. However, the new ix35 1.7 Premium derivative is not all about its engine - it is wrapped in the same attractive body that reflects the Fluidic Sculpture design theme which is to be found throughout the rest of the ix35 range as well as other Hyundai model ranges. The exterior picture is rounded off with 17inch alloy wheels with a gun-metal finish. To complement its very attractive exterior, theix35boastsaroomyandergonomicallywellplanned cabin with a commanding view of the road and one’s surroundings. It is simply a comfortable and very pleasing vehicle to spend time in - whether it is commuting in town or going on a long cross-country trip. The high-tech cockpit comes standard with Hyundai’s signature blue lighting, tilt and telescopic steering wheel to find the most comfortable driving position, steering wheel mounted audio and cruise controls, electrically powered windows and door locks and remote keyless entry. The doors lock automatically at 15 km/h for added security. The ix35 has always been known for its outstanding rear legroom, and second row passengers can also recline their seat backs for even more comfort. The ix35 1.7 Premium’s seats are
Five things to do in a roadside emergency A ROADSIDE emergency can be traumatic and that can cause most drivers to be so overwhelmed that they forget what to do, often leading to disaster on SA’s roads. If a flat tyre, mechanical breakdown, or empty fuel tank forces you to stop driving, the most important thing is to take action to ensure your safety and that of your passengers. Here are some tips from the auto experts at Consumer Reports: 1 - Get off the road Pull your vehicle as far off of the road as safely possible. If your vehicle is in or near traffic and you can safely walk to another location, do so. If the vehicle is parked on the shoulder of a busy highway, exit on the passenger side. Lock the door and leave a note on the windshield in case roadside assistance or the police arrive. 2 - Make your vehicle as visible as possible Turnonthehazardlightsassoonasyourealize that your vehicle is slowing down. Once
stopped, use warning signals (i.e hazard triangle or warning light) to alert drivers to your vehicle’s presence. Place the warning device as far behind your car as practical to give other road users as much notice as possible. 3 - Display a distress signal If you need police help, raise the hood or tie a white cloth to the radio antenna or door handle, or hang the cloth out of the top of the door and close it on the cloth. 4 - Keep the doors locked If the vehicle is in a safe location, wait inside but keep the doors locked and your safety belt fastened. 5 - Exercise caution Use good judgment when accepting help from strangers. If someone of whom you’re suspicious stops next to your vehicle, lower the windowjustenoughtotalkoutof.Ifyou’rewaiting for help, thank them for stopping but tell them you don’t need assistance. If you need help, ask them to make a call for you.

The ix35’s athletic shape is complemented with agile handling and impressive body control. Larger stabilizer bars help to keep the vehicle flat during cornering and help provide quick turn-in response. VARSITY College Pietermaritzburg recently hosted its charity golf day at the Victoria Country Club in aid of the Masixhasane Literacy Project. This corporate social investment project provides mobile libraries to underprivileged schools in surrounding areas. “The school Varsity College chose to donate the mobile library to, Imabliyezwe Primary School, is in Inchanga. “This library is great for the school as itfitsthroughanormaldoorframesoitcan be used between classrooms, it can be locked for safety and has wheels to make the moving of the library simple,” said Bianca Croeser, public relations intern. Many fundraising events took place throughout the year These fundraising events helped a lot and all the money contributed went towards the Masixhasane Library.

OIN the herd and help the Cows reach their goal of one thousand swimming cows for Midmar 2015. The Cows are a fundraising arm of the CHOC (Childhood Haemotology Oncology Clinics) and first gathered in 2008. They have managed to raise over R19 million to date to support children with cancer all over South Africa. The Cows need the public to come and join the Midmar fun when they swim their way across the dam during event two on Saturday, 7 February 2015. As this is the more social event, the public definitely won’t miss them in their eye-catching cow print costumes. Each swimmer that signs up with the Cows is required to commit to raise a minimum of R2500 for
the group. You will be amazed at how family, friends and work colleagues all sponsor a few rands…and before youknowit, you’llhaveachievedyour minimum target. You have a year from date of sign up on givengain.org to achieve your target. However, each Moo is asked to make a mooooosive effort to raise at least R1000 before Midmar to assist with the cost of the costumes. For your efforts, the Cows give each swimmer a costume in the famous cow print in which to complete the event. The Cows will have a kraal set up (aka marquee) before and after the event and invite you to join them.
