Have you spotted traffic officers posted at functioning robots this week? Do you think they are alleviating traffic during the morning rush? Let us know what you think. Gavin Blunt Those that actually read the traffic and prevent grid lock are indeed a God send. The lass at the intersection of Commercial and Victoria is outstanding - as is the chap at Athlone School at the intersection of Taunton. A great initiative - now to control the taxis turning two way single lane roads into 4 lane one way roads.

Grace Do Carmo Edwards The one at the traffic lights opposite Parklane Centre is good, when I go past, if anyone is trying to ignore his instructions he stands in front of them and orders them to wait etc, he’s very good, wish I knew his name so that I can give credit to the individual. I do agree with the comments about the traffic circle at Armitage/Chatterton Road, it is awful trying to get through that in the afternoons, traffic officials to do something about that area.

Rosalind Derrick Anker-Simmons Seen regularly at New England road off ramp in the mornings. Felt once only did they make a difference, otherwise they were going with the traffic lights! And when power is out in the morning, they are nowhere to be seen! How does that work!

Mary Bruce May have had slight effect on gridlocking. Confusing having them overriding working lights though. Some were causing chaos but one made my day by darting out of the intersection and standing on the pavement staring with horror at his handiwork. But they will learn and at least an effort is being made to resolve problems. Well done to all

RAFFIC officers at functioning traffic lights around the city have become a common sight for motorists, withmixedopinionsas to whether they are doing a good job. Traffic officers have been appointed to various intersections during the morning rush and, while traffic lights are functional, direct traffic sometimes causing chaos when motorists continue to follow the traffic lights.

The public shared mixed feelings about the appointment of officers. While some feel that they cause more traffic delays, others feel that they help alleviate the heavy traffic flow. “They are a godsend, although we could do with many more,” said Charlie Shelver. Samantha Barnard concurred saying that they help motorists. However, while people were grateful for the efforts, concern was raised as to why they are not located at non-operating traffic lights and during load shedding. “More than the morning rush,

why can’t they be around when thereisloadshedding,”suggested Lauren Smith. According to Msunduzi Municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha traffic officers are appointed to the operating traffic lights due to a “technical glitch”. “During morning peak hour at certain intersections, the timing of the traffic signals are out of synchronisation and the municipality is addressing this challenge. “In the interim, traffic personal are deployed to regulate traffic during morning peak hour.”

Telkom unsure if PMB staff are to go

NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za TELKOM could not say if staff at its PMB branch will be affected by restructuring plans currently in progress. Last year, the Telkom national office publicly stated that the management pool,

which the company seeks to reduce, is made of up to 2 650 staff. Through these restructuring plans Telkom says it wants to bring services closer to the people by getting rid of unnecessary levels of management, improving customer service.

Telkom’s communications manager Pynee Chetty said in a statement: “We do not break down or segment the statistics per region or small town. Unfortunately, we are not Pietermaritzburg-based. We work on a national scale,” he said.

Chase Valley monkey wars THAMSANQA MAGUBANE A WAR of words has broken out over monkeys in the Chase Valley area. Earlier this year a female monkey and her two babies were found poisoned there. Residents, who declined to be named, said while they did not agree with the poisoning, the monkeys are a nuisance. “ They entered my friend’s living room and completely trashed it, causing thousands of rands in damage.” “It is not true that they do not go into people’s houses. They are in my house daily and I have resorted to keeping all my windows and doors locked,” said another resident. Founder of Monkey Helpline Steve Smit said he had received many calls from residents. He said many of the calls were motivated by a lack of understanding “People need to understand that the monkeys are not invading anyone’s territory. This is their ancestral home. The female monkeys never leave their ancestral home.” Smit said people should avoid provoking, touching or barring teeth at the animals because that will elicit a negative response.

South Africans are the biggest drinkers in Africa, and fourth worldwide, with risky drinking styles such as drink driving, excessive binge dr king, drinking to get drunk or in pass out, drinking from morning to night and drinking without eating food,” Smit explained. Changes in the Draft National Road Traffic Amendment Bill may see the light of day, however, authorities would have to be stringent on enforcement to ensure efficiency, said Smit. “Zero limit must be followed through with rigorous enforcement. A NORTHDALE family are living in fear of their own taps. Fathima Ismail, her husband and two children have woken up each day for the past six months with the fear of being electrocuted when opening their taps to have a shower, get water to drink or wash the dishes. Since October their home and thoseoffourneighboursinDeccan Road have been experiencing “earthing” problems, which resulted in surges of electricity being conducted through their taps. This has resulted in “shocking experiences” where family members have been jolted by bursts of electricity, so strong that in one incident Ismail’s husband collapsed in the shower. After numerous complaints to Msunduzi’s electricity department since October, an electrician turned up to diagnose the problem, whichhesaidisduetoan “earth leak”. Ismail said when she was shocked after turning on the tap to have a shower she “didn’t even know if she was dead or alive”. “It shocked me so badly that my entire hand flung back over me.” She had to use a wooden broom to close the running shower tap afterwards. According to the municipal electrician on scene, who would not be named, the problem comes from the electricitypoleoutsidetheirhome. The occurrences take place once or twice a month. She said the electrician had not resolved the matter. His advice to them was to slowly knock their knuckles on the tap’s handles to feel for any electricity surges before turning them on. Msunduzi municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha did not respond in time.

>> Reformed drug lord Zaineth Shireen Hutchinson was arrested during a police raid recently NICOLE JOHN

A

LMOST a year after sitting down with Maritzburg Fever to tell of her transformation from drug lord to upstanding citizen, Zaineth Shireen Hutchinson was arrested during a police raid recently for possession and dealing in cocaine. Last year, Hutchinson said that she had reformed to being a loved community member in Happy Valley in Woodlands, feeding the needy in the area every Thursday and volunteering at Gift of the Givers. Salim Sayed, Gift of the Givers warehouse manager, said that there was no sign of her dealing in drugs at work and it appeared as

though she had reformed. “Nothing happened with her here at work. We believed that she wanted to change her life and she was an excellent worker who was always reliable and good at what she did.” SayedsaidthatstaffatGiftofthe Givers found out about her arrest in the media and she had even arrived to volunteer that week. “We were all in shock; we couldn’tbelievethatshegotcaught up in the system again.” He said that there were members of the public who had complained about her working at the warehouse. “We believe that people deserve a second chance, that’s what we gave her. It is not possible torunbackgroundchecksonevery

volunteer that comes to offer their services to us. “We take it at face value and we don’t know what they are doing when they leave these premises.” During the 2014 interview, Hutchinson admitted that she was dealing in various hard drugs, with the most popular being cocaine, and she could easily earn about R20 000 a week from selling drugs. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison after she was caught dealing drugs. She served a little over eight years of her sentence and was released on 22 August 2013 for good behaviour. Following the raid, which was a culmination of a two and a half year undercover operation, Hutchinson was arrested and

appeared in court on multiple counts of dealing in cocaine, or alternatively possessing cocaine. Seven of the accused were arrested during a police raid, while the eighth, Faybian MacKay, allegedly handed himself over to police. MacKay, Hutchinson’s son, and his brother Samsam are among the accused. The other accused are Hoosen Mohamed Shaik Cassim, Ramesh Mahabeer, ex-policeman Sagren Pillay, Zaheer Buckroodeen and Deon Gabagas. Only one accused, Zaheer Buckroodeen, was granted bail of R700 while the others bail was opposed and remain in custody. The case has been remanded to 12 March.

Volunteers change lives TWO Mama Ntombi’s Community Projects volunteers, Fiona and Mairi Matheson, have given a month of their time working with two disadvantaged families. One of the cases they are working on is a boy called Nzuzo, whose mother died when he was three, and because he was sickly, he was abandoned by his father who then disappeared from his life. No family members came forward to care for him. One of the neighbours in the area saw him wandering around lost, lonely and hungry. She took him into her home and has been caring for him for the past three years. Now Nzuzo is six, but cannot be enrolled in school because he does not have a birth certificate. The Matheson’s have taken on the challenge of getting through all the loopholes to secure a birth certificate. The second case involves helping a 76-year-old woman - Gogo Zuma - who was diagnosed with leprosy in 1968 and had to have her right foot amputated. She had great difficulty moving around however, the Matheson’s managed to get her a pair of crutches so she is able to move with ease. “We are so grateful to Fiona and Mairi for all they are doing to assist these two families. There are many other children in need, but we are unable to attend to themallaswedon’thavethemanpower,” said Sandra Pillay from MNCP. ORTHDALE Hospital is partnering with faith organisations to ease the congestion of patients who fetch chronic medication from the hospital and neighbouring clinics. Northdale Hospital’s primary health-care manager Sugen Pillay said the hospital currently supplies chronic medication to more than 20 000 patients and the hospital and clinics cannot cope with the influx. He said service waiting time at collection points has improved to no longer than 30 minutes per patient. Pillay said the aim is to increasetheservicepointssothat

they limit the number of patients to only 1 000 per collection point. The hospital currently has six collection points open from 8am to 12pm. TheNewBirthMinistriesat40 Allendale Drive opens on Mondays, theVedDharmaSabha attheSabhaHallinBombayRoad opens on Tuesdays, the Andhra Sabha in Northdale in Ramlingum Road opens on Wednesdays, the Christian Fellowship, on the corner of Judith Crescent and Olympia Way and the Copesville Mosque, both open on Thursdays and Solid Rock Ministries in Retief Street opens on Fridays. “We are looking at increasing collection points and encourage interested faith-based organisations to contact us,” said Pillay.

Northdale Hospital pharmacy manager Matshepo Molefe said: “Due to the decrease in the number of patients at the hospital, nurses are now able to spend more time attending to patients. Collection points are only for patients who are well controlled and need repeat medication.” Copesville Muslim Society’s Naeem Hussain said that when the hospital approached them to assist, they were more than willing to help. “We were willing to assist because of the elderly and the sickly who cannot travel to Northdale Hospital.” Arrangements to fetch medication from collection points should be made at the hospital and clinics he said.

NATURE conservation is everyone’s responsibility. This was said by Wildlands Conservation Trust strategic marketing manager Lauren van Nijkerk after Wildlands recently planted 400 indigenous trees in collaboration with PSG Konsult (Pty) Ltd at the Cascades restoration site. Van Nijkerk said the trees had been grown from seed by “tree-preneurs”, who live in different communities. “The significance of the project is to plant trees in order to restore and green degraded areas. The significance of ree-preneurs is to assist poor communities green their areas and barter trees for livelihood support such as groceries, building materials and school fees. “ The ultimate goal is to restore their dignity and help them provide for their families and take ownership of improving their lives. “The public, or communities, can see they can help their families survive by growingtreesandrealisethatinorderfor their future generations to survive, they need to take care of the environment now before it’s too late,” said Van Nijkerk. She said that Wildlands is working on reviving the Cascades restoration site to breathe life into it and ensure self-sustainability. There are 1 700 known indigenous or native trees in South Africa and to preserve them is everyone’s responsibility. “To preserve them we encourage our tree-preneurs and the public to only plant indigenous trees. By harvesting and growing them, they will exist for generations to come as some of these indigenous trees are used for traditional medicinal purposes. “ It is up to every one of us to conserve nature as this will ensure our heritage is preserved and that in future we have vibrant and flourishing river systems and ecosystems.” There are more than 22 000 species of seed plants indigenous to southern Africa. This includes shrubs, grasses, ground cover, small trees and large trees. Wildlands Greening Your Future (GYF) restoration teams plant on average 900 000 trees a year across South Africa. A beautiful building houses the girls of St John’s. ST John’s was founded in 1897 by the Sisters of the Society of St John the Divine. St John’s is very proud of the value system of love and discipline, based on Christian principles, which form the cornerstone of our school. Although traditionally an Anglican school, we welcome pupils of all denominations and religions, and respect the variety of languages and cultures which are represented throughout our school. Excellent matriculation results prove our ability to provide the tuition and encouragement by dedicated and caring staff for all girls to achieve their full potential. Varied and flexible subject packages cover the humanities and sciences to meet the abilities and interests of all our learners. As a leading independent girls’ school, we offer the IEB National Senior Certificate Examination

which is internationally benchmarked and many candidates are directly accepted into overseas universities. The Grade 9 girls embark on an epic trip to the Drakensberg in the third term each year. uHambo means “journey” in Zulu. The reason for the name is that this trip is a physical, spiritual and emotional journey for the girls. The girls hike, cycle and pony-trek, camp and occasionally stay overnight in mountain huts. This is an enriching experience for the girls during which they look at life in a more meaningful way, and have a brief respite from our fast-paced, often superficial, consumerist society. The young ladies from St John’s DSG have confidence in their ability to contribute positively to their future development, to that of their families, as well as that of their community and country.

The sanctuary, an educational facility, houses multiple non-releasable rehab birds such as eagles, owls, falcons and vultures, including the Egyptian Vulture that is extinct in the wild in South Africa. The girls observed a group of vultures they described as ‘moving around violently in their enclosure all in the name of food’. The guide explained that some cultures believe that if you eat a vulture's brain you are able to predict the future, which has led to the decline in vulture numbers. Rhino poaching has also had a knock-on effect because of the use of poison and vultures feeding off the infected carcasses. The girls fed a Marabou Stork and enjoyed a bird show featuring many of the centre’s birds of prey.

IETERMARITZBURG’S Oval Cricket Stadium was transformed into a kaleidoscopeofcolouronSaturday night when people from around the city celebrated the Holi Colour Festival. Holi is an ancient Hindu festival signifying good triumphing over evil, and is celebrated all over the world. Familiesandfriendsofdifferent races and religions gathered at the stadium to dance, listen to music and throw coloured powder into the air and at each other. Festival organiser Bunny Bhoola said it was a “fabulous, world-class event”. Bhoola said the festival was the first of its kind in PMB and was a step forward in putting the KZN capital city “back into focus”. She acknowledged the turnout was poor, but attributed this to the festivalmakingitsfirstappearance in Pietermaritzburg. “Although the turnout was not

Chauke, a high profile prisoner, managed to escape a high- security prison and while on the run lived a glamorous lifestyle partying with cabinet ministers and moving freely in and out the country. “ HE MADE MY ENEMIES COME AND CONFESS WHAT THEY DONE TO ME” I first heard about Mr Shake on a community radio talk show. I took his number down and booked an appointment. He charged me to read my fortune. I was shocked when he told me my name, and my husband’s name. Mr Shake saw that my husband and I were fighting. He mentioned that my husband was involved with another woman which I couldn’t believe. He then showed me the other woman in a mirror and I was shocked!! I had lived for 10 years with unhappiness in my marriage until now. Mr Shake cast a spell and the other women separated with my husband and later both confessed to me. Today we live happy with respect and no fighting after Mr Shake binded him to me. I recommend him to others who are suffering and regard him as my guide. My husband has been to him and his business has improved. He also helps with other problems, love, luck, marriage, business, work, etc. If you would like to book Call 073 957 0953, private home.

SA-bound Audi R8 to be unleashed >> Revving new wheels for the country

The Audi R8.

A

UDI’S second-generation R8 sports car will debut at the 2015 Geneva auto show in March and be in Europe’s showrooms later in the year. South Africa has to wait until the second quarter of 2016 for delivery - and bear in mind that in Europe the V10 (a new engine)coststheequivalentofR2.1 million and the V10 Plus R2.4 million. South African prices, as always, will be announced at the local launch. The latest R8 has subtle design changes, the new V10, new all-wheel drive and the latest in Audi technology. Theprevious4.2V8hasbeensuperseded by a non-turbo, 5.2-litre, V10 in two variants. Standard, it’s capable of 402kW/540Nm, 100km/h in 3.5sec and 323km/h. The R8 Plus is tuned for 454kW/560Nm, 3.2sec and 330km/h. Each drives a seven-speed S tronic transmission; fuel consumption for the standard version rated at 11.8 litres/100km with emissions of 275g/ km, the Plus at 12.4/100km and 289g/ km. The S Tronic comes with manual mode, launch control and coasting mode. The R8 V10 Plus has a dry weight of 1454kgs, 50kgs less than its predecessor. Ulrich Hackenberg, board member for technical development at Audi, said:

“Motorsport is in Audi’s genes, it has always been a permanent feature of our brand’s character. With the new Audi R8, our engineers are bringing accumulated racing expertise from the race track onto the road. No other model of ours evokes more dynamic emotion. “All of that,” Audi says, “makes the new R8 V10 Plus the most powerful and fastest series production Audi yet.” Its underbody, Audi says, has a diffuser to boost downforce. Its chassis, with double wishbone suspension, demonstrateshowclosethetomotorsport is the new Audi R8. The design remains largely unchanged from the outgoing version at 4.42m long, 1.24m tall and on a 2.65m wheelbase. Its dimensions have changed slightly from its predecessor, the most obvious being an extra 4cm in width. It has a squared-off, single-frame grille with trapezoidal diod lights (“laserpowered” beams as an option) and restyled air intakes. The new R8 boasts dynamic turn signals with a “scrolling function” for the intended turn direction. The rear is more angled and the previous round exhausts are replaced by trapezoidal outlets. It’s equipped with 19” alloy rims shod with 245/30 (front) and 245/35 (rear) tyres though 20” are available. The Plus

version uses carbon-ceramic brakes, the standard steel. The standard V10 has a powered spoiler, the Plus uses a fixed carbon-fibre wing. Like the new TT, launched in South Africa in February, the new R8 has digital displays on its configurable 31cm Virtual Cockpit. The most important controls are grouped in button clusters on the steering wheel. Audi’s MMI navigation plus with MMI touch is standard. According to Audi: “The multimaterial Audi Space Frame (ASF) ensures low-weight and optimum axle load distribution. The combination of aluminium and carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) in the Audi Space Frame opens up new dimensions with regard to weight, rigidity and crash behaviour.” The second generation of the Audi R8 formsthebasisformoremodels.Thelatest version of the electric, high-performance R8 e-tron sports car is capable of 339kW/920Nm and sprints to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds. Equipped with new battery cells, Audi claims its E-tron’s range “now exceeds 450km”. The new Audi R8 LMS race car was developed based on the new GT3 regulations due to come into effect worldwide from 2016. In 2015 it will already be put through its paces at the factory.

Ford SA goes ‘performance’

FORD South Africa’s motorsport activities have been united for the 2015 season with the launch of a motorsport programme under the new Ford Performance brand. Tracey Delate, Ford SA’s marketing manager, said: “Ford remains committed to innovation through performance and the new global Ford Performance team ties together racing, performance vehicles and parts. “Regional performance engineering and racing teams have been united as one global team under Ford Performance, which sees the integration of Ford SVT, Team RS and Ford Racing. This unified organisation serves as an innovation laboratory and test-bed to create unique performance vehicles, parts, accessories and experiences for customers.” This approach sees the development of smart innovations and technologies in aerodynamics, lightweight materials, electronics, powertrain performance and fuel efficiency that can be applied more broadly to Ford’s product portfolio. Ford motorsport manager John Nagel said: “We have focused our motorsport involvement this year on rallying and cross country, which are the most successful championships on the 2015 calendar. “The teams are proven winners with an exceptional line-up of champion drivers and race-winning vehicles in the Fiesta and the Ranger. It will be Ford’s strongestassaultyetonthevarioustitlesandwehave every confidence that the crews will be challenging for victory in every round and doing Ford and its loyal supporters proud.”

It is fantastic having the backing and support of Ford Performance and Ford South Africa, and we hope to add even more silverware to the trophy cabinet throughout the season.” According to Houghton, the team will start off their season on the Tour Natal at the end of February with the same spec vehicle they used in 2014 but they will have the benefit of the latest specification for the Sasol Rally in April 2015. Houghton said: “We sent one of our Fiesta body shells back to M-Sport in the UK at the end of last year, and it is currently being updated to the latest level. Underwater hockey team does KZN proud >> KwaZulu-Natal entered four teams

A

VOORTREKKER pupil was named the most promising junior underwater hockey player at the recent South African junior national underwater hockey tournament at Kings Park Swimming pool in Durban. KwaZulu-Natal entered four teams and with many of the players playing in this tournament for the first time, it was expected that the going was going to be difficult against the experienced players of other provinces. KZN teams won bronze in the boys’ U19 B league and bronze in the development league.

Chrizanne Smit from Voortrekker High was named the most promising junior underwater hockey player in the age category of 15 and younger. She also won bronze in the 50m surface and silver in the 50m apnea (under water) fin swimming events. Interested junior players from any school in the Pietermaritzburg area can attend training sessions from 5pm to 8pm on Thursdays at the Voortrekker swimming pool. Inland salute their fast bowler JONATHAN COOK IT has been a memorable few weeks for the KZN Inland cricket team, as they have witnessed a remarkable performance by likeable fast bowler Matt Pillans for the Dolphins cricket team. Pillans is a stalwart of the Inland attack and much-prized for his contribution by coach Grant Morgan and captain Shane Burger. But their enthusiasm now knows no bounds after their quickie picked up a career best six wickets for 67 in the first innings for the Dolphins against the Knights at Kingsmead recently in Durban, and then got another four sticks in the second innings to finish with the milestone 10 wickets in a first-class match. It is the first time Pillans has achieved the feat and according to Morgan, it is just reward for the hours and hours the paceman has put into his bowling both with the Inland squad, as well as on those lonely days and nights in the gym and on the road. “Mattie is the ultimate professional and it was uncanny that the Fever praised him recently for his promise and just a few days later, he endorsed that feeling with an incredible

performance,” Morgan told the Fever at the Maritzburg Oval on Tuesday. Captain Burger could not agree more. “Mattie is a perfect example to youngsters about how to approach the game if you want to consider making a career of it. He knows that you simply have to put in the hard yards at team sessions and especially when you are on your own with no one watching. That’s what separates the wannabes from those who realise their dream.” The ultra-modest Pillans, whose mom Eileen (nee Fourie) played hockey for SA for over a decade and went to Commercial High (now Linpark), says parental support is also key. “Mom and my dad Dave have always been there for me and I urge parents to be supportive and not pushy with their kids.” Well said Matt. Your success is ours.
