PMB street Msunduzi children and Municipality prostitutes >> A task team has been formed to address the issue of street children and prostitutes on the streets of Pietermaritzburg NQOBILE MTOLO >>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za
P
IETERMARITZBURG prostitutes are here to stay. The Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT), an NGO that fights for the rights and well– being of sex workers, has made it clear that it will not entertain the Msunduzi Municipality’snewbylawsofremoving sex workers from the streets. “No! As SWEAT we do not support the removal of sex workers off the streets because we believe that sex work is work,” said SWEAT’s advocacy officer, Ntokozo Yingwana. Yingwana said that even though prostitution has not been legalized in South Africa, SWEAT is working hard to make it so. “SWEAT is advocating for the decriminalisation of sex work. We have sex workers who lobby parliamentarians, unions and community leaders. We are still waiting for the South African Law Reform Commission (SALRC) to release its report on the Discussion Paper on Adult Prostitution, Project 107, which we made a submission to in 2009. Initially the report was said to be released in 2011, then 2012, and now there is no finalisation date. The SALRC keeps telling us that they are waiting for the appointment of commissioners. Until they release this report and make its recommendation, parliament cannot debate decriminalisation of sex work,” said Yingwana. Yingwana said that sex workers experience a lot of abuse and discrimination from both the public and government service providers, such as clinics and police stations.
“A lot of the abuse comes from the police though. The Women’s Legal Centre (WLC) report on police abuse thatwasreleasedlastyearshowedthat of the 308 sex workers interviewed for thisstudy,70%experiencedsomeform ofabuseatthehandsofthepolice,”said Yingwana. Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma said that Prince Alfred and Burger Streets are problem areas, filled with prostitutes as well as street children who rob people and who have sex in full view of the public. “This is a social problem that needs tobedealtwithsensitively.Prostitution is illegal, and indecent acts on our streets cannot be condoned. But again, we need to see the bigger picture. Poverty has serious manifestations,” said Zuma. He said that the presence of street children cripples business operations in the CBD. The Maritzburg Fever spoke to three street children who have formed a small compound at the corner of Hesom and Langalibalele (Longmarket) Streets. Pouring glue from its glass container into an empty milk carton, one said that the municipality abuses them. “They use water cannons so that we move from here. They dump us in desertedareasoutoftownsothatwecan’t come back. Our fathers and mothers fought for our freedom and this is what weget?Ipromiseyou, someonewillget hurt.” Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said that prostitution is a social phenomenon that cannot be addressed by the police alone. “The South African Police and the
office of the mayor are currently addressing the problem of prostitution in the city and surrounding areas. Numerous interventions are carried out and several of the prostitutes are chargedonaweeklybasis.Itisunfortunate that fines are low and are affordable so it does not deter the offenders,” he said, adding that the SAP are monitoringthesituationaswellasproviding regular patrols and searches in the area. “It is also crucial that community leadersandreligiousorganizationsassist in addressing the demand, in order for the supply to decrease,” said Zwane. He said that removing children from the street fulfils a constitutional mandate. Although police say that no reports of child prostitution have been foundinPietermaritzburg,Zwanesaid that parents must take responsibility for their children. “SWEAT does not support the sexual exploitation of children. We actually don’tevenrefertochildrenwhosellsex as sex workers; instead we refer to themaschildrenwhoarebeingsexually exploited. When we do come across a child during outreach or get a tip–off, we immediately contact the police and NGOs to help us remove that child from that brothel or street,” said Yingwana. Zumaaddedthatataskteamofvarious stakeholders, including the KZN Department of Social Development, MsunduziMunicipality,SAPS,KZNDepartment of Health, and Youth for Christ and some other interested parties, has been formed to find a solution. “This is not a problem that can be solved by the municipality alone,” said Zuma.

Future of Tembaletu Trust still uncertain SCHOOL
EFF targets Msunduzi Municipality WHY WE LOVE SEND STORIES AND PICS TO bridget@witness.co.za

Julius Malemas’ party, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has set its sights on Msunduzi Municipality.
ESPITE the uncertainty of its future, Tembaletu Trust is runningfullsteamaheadwith a variety of new and exciting projects on the go. Last year, Maritzburg Fever reported that the non–governmental organization would possibly have to shut its doors at their premises in Burger Street, after receiving a notice of the termination of their 25 year lease with the Department of Public Works.
On a recent visit, director Richard Rangiah told Maritzburg Fever that they had received a nine month extension to the termination date, which is now 30 June 2014. “We are happy to get the extension, however this does not solve the problem. We are still appealing at every possible level to keep this premises as a public facility centre,” said Rangiah. He added that the trust has written to the director general at the Department of Higher Education and Training, Gwebinkunda Qonde, presenting their case and request to re-
main at their current premises and are awaiting feedback. However this has not stopped the organization from moving forward with various activities for the public. They have started a ceramics course which invites unemployed youth to learn how to make ceramics. The two major projects they will be involved in this year are in collaboration with the National Lottery. The first focuses on developing the writing skills of school children, both in primary and high school. The program will take pupils through the whole publishing process, from an
idea, to writing a story, editing it and finally publishing it. At the end of the program, the trust will publish a collection of the best stories which will be available to the public to purchase. The second project is the development of a music training centre for unemployed youth to pursue their musical talents through theory and practice. “The struggle for our location is ongoing but that hasn’t stopped us from continuing to provide our service to the public. We remain positive,” said Rangiah.
NQOBILE MTOLO >>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za JULIUS Malema’s party, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has listed the Msunduzi Municipality as one of its targets. Speaking to the Maritzburg Fever, EFF convener Reggie Ngcobo said thatthepartyhasreceivedalotofinvitations from people who want to be volunteer members. Ngcobo said that although the party is still waiting for a complete formal registration with the Independent ElectoralCommission(IEC),whichhe said should be done by end of this week, he said that there are unanswered questions that need to be ironed out at the municipality. He said that some issues that need transparency include finer details of the maladministration which brought the municipality to its knees in2010whileZaneleHlatshwayowas still the mayor. Ngcobo confessed that the EFF made a mistake by not focusing its attention on KwaZulu–Natal as soon as the party was formed by Malema. “At that time, we did not realize that EFF is a big brand in KwaZulu– Natal. The support in the province is overwhelming and we admit that we havenotputinextraeffort[inmobilizing the party],” added Ngcobo. With many people coming on board, the party aims at achieving 30% to 35% of votes in the KZN area come the 2014 elections, said Ngcobo. “TheMsunduziMunicipalityisone of our target areas. There are a lot of hanging issues that need to be sorted out. Once we become a formal political party, those issues will be boldly raised. Although we are still waiting for the completion of the formal registration with the IEC, nothing stops us from addressing issues concerned with the livelihood of the people,” added Ngcobo. The EFF was formed by Malema, the expelled and former African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) president, in July this year.
The gift that keeps on giving NICOLE JOHN >>nicole@pmbfever.co.za GIFT of the Givers warehouse manager, Salim Sayed, has been recognised by the Mountain Rise Police Stationforhiseffortswithjobcreationandskillsdevelopment. Sayed began a small furniture business project at the warehouse at 31 Willowton Road, which he thought would put the vacant space on the premises to good use. The project started off as a hobby, and then grew into something a little bigger when Sayed realised he could use this as an opportunity to offer employment to a few people in the city. “I started this project in an effort to help people with jobs and help the poverty stricken, even if it is just in a very small way. These men came to me without any skills in furniture making and I taught them what I know and now they can make anything,” he said. There are currently five people who work at the businesswhichhasbeenrunningsincethebeginning of this year. Sayed said that things started off slowly but as people got to see their work, it picked up. Sayed and his team make anything from headboards, beds, chairs, lounge suites and wedding chairs for Indian ceremonies. They even do reupholstering and recovery of lounge suites. Communications officer for the Mountain Rise Police Station, warrant officer Joshua Maistry, applauded the effort of Sayed. “On behalf of the station commander of Mountain Rise, we would like to applaud Mr Sayed on his initiative for job creation and enhancing skills developmentinthecity.Weappreciatedthejobyouhavedone and encourage others to follow suit.” For more information, contact Sayed at 083 651 2006 or 079 502 5944.

volved, these racers are willing to leave the comfort and safety of their homes tobreakthelaw, allsotheycandowhat they enjoy. This should be a clear indication that the municipality is not providing for the needs of these people who would be willing to pay for the use of proper facilities. As opposed to trying to lock these people up, the municipality should pro vide a venue for these events and for a reasonable fee, allow the drag racing enthusiasts to do what they love. I feel
this would serve the community a lot better than trying to apprehend these racers, as this is potentially a new source of revenue which can then be used where needed such as fixing the multitude of pothole on our roads. If our police placed more impor tance on dealing with serious crimes, such as rape and murder, as opposed to chasing down drag racers, our city would be a far more pleasant place to live in. Stand together to save the rhino GREED has driven the rhino to the brink of extinction. Soon children will not be abletomarvelatthesightofabeautiful rhino. At the rate at which the rhino is being poached, experts are predicting that it will be extinct by 2015. When this happens, it will be a sad day for the human race. The number of rhinos poached this year alone stands at a staggering 553. The demand for rhino horn has been in creasing steadily, with 83 rhinos killed in 2008, 122 in 2009, 333 in 2010, 448
in 2011 and 668 in 2012. Thereisalackofpoliticalwilltodeal with this carnage. Too often, the battle is lost in court with documents missing. Poachers get out on bail and continue to kill. Recently, a poacher awaiting his next court appearance was found with two rhino horns on the Swaziland bor der, the cartilage intact and blood still dripping. We are not only losing our rhino, we are also losing our human dignity. Neighbouring countries like Botswana
have implemented shoot to kill policies and tougher penalties on poachers in an effort to protect the rhino. South Africa needs to implement similar strategies if we want to win this battle against rhino poaching. Let’s do our bit to save this magnifi cent creature who may suffer the same fate as the dodo and be poached to ex tinction. VIJAY SURUJPAL Via email

Finance guru at St Charles >> Cees Bruggemans encourages boys, and some parents, to remain focused in life NICOLE JOHN >>nicole@pmbfever.co.za
R
ETIRED First National Bank chief economist, Cees Bruggemans, recently addressed the Grade 11 and 12 pupils, and some of their parents, at St Charles College. Bruggemans addressed their uncertainty about entering into the business world and how the economic climate would affect their lives, and the success thereof. “All we are ever sure of is the total, utter unpredictability of life. All we have to do is remain focused,” he said. He gave the boys a general outlook on his interpretation of what the business world will be like when they enter into their first jobs. Painting a picture of positivity, Bruggemanssaidthatthecountry, and the world at large, were in the process of repair. “You are the lucky generation that will walk into a working world that is fully functional again.”

Two 11–year old Cowan House students, Kezia Taylor and Lauren Wood, raised R5138 for the KwaCheetah Project at a fete they held recently. When Wildlands CEO Dr Andrew Venter heard about this, he was so moved by the young girls’ passion for conservation, he chatted to his team at Wildlands and the Wildlands Conservation Trust decided to match the girl’s donation, rand for rand, and donated a further R5138 to the KwaCheetah Project. Des mond Gouws of the KwaCheetah Project praised the girls and Wildlands for the much needed funds. If anyone would also like to contribute to the con servation efforts of the KwaCheetah Project, please contact Desmond at woodlands@nambiti.com. Pictured at the cheque handover are (front) Lau ren Wood (L), Kezia Taylor (back) Desmond Gouws (L) from the KwaChee tah Project and Dr Andrew Venter from Wildlands.
Grace College pupils delivered an excellent performance at the ‘Grace’s Gifts’ talent show held recently. From entertaining and wellspo ken MC’s, to talented musicians, singers, dancers and actors, the evening held some thing for everyone. Ending their school career on a high note were matric pupils Sarah Tychsen (L) and Skhulu Zondi (R), who shared the winners’ trophy. Tychsen did a beautiful rendition of Adele’s ‘Chasing Pave ments’ and Zondi entertained with his own composition called ‘Loud!’.

TECH TALK COMPUTER WORLD REPAIR or replace? A common phrase we hear every day. Computers will usually last two to three years before the hardware starts running down. In the same breath, it is also worth noting that an average computer will be irreparable due to technological advancements rendering it’s hardware obsolete after six to sev en years. When this happens, the first thing to consider is whether to repair or replace. The basic guide for making a decision like this lies in a logical conclusion based on the information provided above, coupled with the cost of the solution torepair.Forinstance, afour yearoldcomputerthathasbeenriddledwith viruses would be viable to fix based on the average virus removal cost. However, that same machine also having a faulty motherboard and power supply unit might be due for replacement, depending on the original value of the machine. A good rule of thumb to stick to is as follows: Software based crashes and errors are worth having repaired almost every time, however, hardware based repairs are usually only viable during the first thee years. In the case of laptops, the rules change slightly. Laptop parts are expensive, with the exception of the hard drive and the memory (RAM). The average mainboard for a laptop will cost almost double the original purchase value of the laptop. Another point is that laptop hardware repairs are more time consuming due to the sensitive stripping. The rule of thumb for laptops is as follows: If the unit is less than two years old, repair it if the cost of repairing is less than 20% of the original purchase price. If the laptop is over two years old, only repair if it is a software based error or crash.

A race for the ladies >> Thousands of women – and some confused men – expected to turn our for the Spar ladies race this Sunday
T
HE annual Spar Women’s 10/5km race will be held this Sunday, September 8. The running of the original Spar women’s race in the country takes to the streets around Alexandra Park, starting in Princess Margaret Drive outside Maritzburg College and finishing at The Oval cricket stadium. With the increase of interest, the race route has been tweaked to accommodate the anticipated extra numbers. Last years champion, Poppy Mlambo, will be back to defend her title. She will be lining up with Tanith Maxwell,SouthAfricanOlympicmarathon runner. As the clock strikes 8am, a limited field of 4000 women – and confused blokes – will take to the roadstocompeteinthetwodistances.
With only one start for both, runners are urged not to miss the gun. “It is wonderful to see that the Pietermaritzburg race numbers are increasing and that there is so much interest and enthusiasm in the Spar race. JONATHAN COOK COACHING sport at school and university level is no easy task in what is a fiercely competitive environment. All institutions see success as a powerful marketing tool as they compete for the best students. Sporty fathers place as much emphasis on an institution’s prowess on the playing fields as they do on quality in the educational and cultural spheres, and to this end top coaches are employed. Maritzburg College and UKZN Pietermaritzburg product Darryn Gallagher, is a prime example of the new era.HeadofhockeyatNorthwoodHigh in Durban, “Gally” offered insight to Maritzburg Fever on his coaching model. And he walks the talk. Among many, many achievements, the ex– South Africa midfielder played nearly
100 test matches and is a Beijing 2008 Olympian. He has coached a host of teams to national and provincial success. He is head coach of the SA U21 team for the Junior World Cup in Delhi in December. Northwood have come from nowhere to the top echelon of SA schoolboy hockey in Gallagher’s three years there. Here are a few key factors in his school sport coaching model. “Communication with all stakeholders is vital. The first team is only as good as the teams below it. You must build a team of coaches. Basic skills, physical conditioning and tactical awareness are vital components. Boys will have the right grounding when they reach me, allowing for focus on finer things and not having to re–teach the basics.” The teacher/coach versus outside– coach conundrum? “Employ as many
teachers as possible but always employ the best person when it comes to Ateams.Buildathree–yearplan.Bring the most talented into the first team; grade 10s if need be. Grow them. Discipline? You set the example.” Different personalities? “Incrediblyimportanttoknowwhat motivates each player if you want them to function well within a team,” he said. Gallagher is a disciple of Mike Bechet. “MiketurnedCollegehockeyintoan empire that other schools have always strived to emulate. Like Mike, winning is very important to me, but isn’t everything. If we deserve to lose on the day, thenIamallforit.Createawinningculture rather than a win–at–all costs mentality.” The Gally model, tried and tested, can be applied by all school sports coaches.
