About This Guide

Welcome to Starin’s comprehensive guide designed specifically for Houses of Worship. As technology continues to evolve, it is increasingly important for faith communities to integrate audiovisual products that enhance the experience of worship, communication, and education. This eBook serves as a practical resource to help you understand and select the right audiovisual tools for your space. Whether you are looking to upgrade your sanctuary’s sound system, install a reliable streaming setup, or improve the audio-visual experience in your classrooms and meeting rooms, this guide provides clear and concise information on the latest products that will suit your needs.

The eBook is organized by the different areas within a House of Worship, allowing you to focus on the specific technology that can be applied in each space. From the sanctuary to the lobby, and even meeting rooms, we’ve outlined the products that are most relevant to each setting.

Lobby

The church lobby serves as a welcoming space for congregants, providing the first impression as they enter. Enhancing this area with audiovisual technology can improve communication and create a more inviting atmosphere. Audio speakers strategically placed in the lobby can help relay important announcements, music, or live audio from the sanctuary, ensuring that those arriving or socializing are still connected to the main service. Digital signage displays offer a modern way to keep everyone informed, displaying upcoming events, sermon notes, or other important information in an engaging format. Beyond the basics, a variety of accessories can be used to complement these technologies, such as mounting solutions, control panels, and networked systems that allow for easy management of all AV components. By investing in these AV options, churches can create a lobby that is not only functional but also enhances the overall experience for members and visitors alike.

Creating a Welcoming Atmosphere: AV Design for Church Lobbies

The lobby of a church serves as the gateway to the spiritual experience within. It’s the first physical space that visitors and congregants encounter, setting the tone for their entire visit. As such, the audiovisual (AV) design in this area plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming, informative, and aesthetically pleasing environment. When it comes to AV design in a house of worship lobby or entry area, subtlety is key. The goal is to seamlessly integrate technology into the space without overpowering the architectural and spiritual elements. This delicate balance ensures that the lobby remains a welcoming space while still

providing all necessary information and creating the right ambiance.

The choice and placement of speakers are critical in creating an inviting auditory environment. Options include pendant speakers , which can be both functional and decorative, blending with the ceiling design; in-ceiling speakers , offering a clean, hidden look that doesn’t interfere with the visual aesthetics; and surface mount speakers , which can be strategically placed for optimal sound distribution. The right combination and layout of these speakers will fill the area with clear,

intelligible audio. This serves multiple purposes: setting a calming or uplifting ambiance through background music, ensuring announcements and messages are heard clearly throughout the space, and creating a seamless audio experience as people transition from the lobby to the main worship area.

Digital Signage Displays are essential for communicating important information, but their placement must be carefully considered. The goal is to make information easily accessible without detracting from the overall design of the space. This can be achieved by placing displays in hightraffic areas where they’re easily visible, using sizes and styles that complement the architectural elements, and incorporating displays into existing structures or creating custom housing that matches the decor. The information displayed should be relevant, including schedules, sermon notes, upcoming events, or community announcements. It should also be clear and legible, using appropriate font sizes and color contrasts, and

regularly updated to ensure the information remains current and useful.

The key to successful AV design in a church lobby is finding the right balance between technological functionality and spiritual atmosphere. When done correctly, the AV elements should enhance the welcoming nature of the space, provide clear and accessible information, support the overall mission and message of the church, and respect and complement the architectural design. By focusing on these principles, we can

create a lobby space that not only makes a great first impression but also serves as an effective transition point between the outside world and the spiritual experience within the main worship area. Through thoughtful integration of audio and visual elements, the church lobby becomes a space that informs and guides while maintaining an atmosphere of reverence and welcome.

Sanctuary

The sanctuary is the heart of the worship experience, where audiovisual technology plays a vital role in engaging and connecting with the congregation. High-quality audio systems ensure that speakers, singers, and musicians are heard clearly, creating an immersive sound environment that enhances every service. Video walls, projectors, and cameras provide visual support, displaying lyrics, scripture, and other content, while also enabling live streaming for those joining remotely. These tools help extend the message beyond the walls of the church, reaching members wherever they are.

Mass notification systems integrated into the sanctuary allow for immediate communication of important or urgent messages, enhancing both the safety and the overall experience of attendees.

Complementing these core elements are accessories such as microphones, stands, cables, and control systems, which ensure that every component functions optimally. Post-production options enable churches to refine and share their recorded services, preserving special moments and making them accessible for future viewing. With the right AV technology, the sanctuary becomes a powerful space for worship, communication, and community connection.

Enhancing Worship: The Role of AV Technology in Modern Sanctuaries

The sanctuary stands as the spiritual epicenter of any house of worship, a sacred space where congregants gather to connect with their faith and community. In this hallowed environment, AV technology has emerged as an indispensable tool, seamlessly blending with traditional elements to create a more immersive and engaging worship experience. The judicious application of AV solutions can significantly enhance the delivery of sermons, the power of music, and the overall atmosphere of reverence and reflection.

The scale and sophistication of AV systems in sanctuaries can vary dramatically, tailored to

meet the specific needs, size, and style of each individual congregation. From modest setups in small, intimate chapels to elaborate installations in vast cathedrals, the underlying principle remains consistent: to facilitate clear communication and foster a deeper connection between the message and the faithful. This adaptability ensures that houses of worship of all sizes can harness the benefits of modern technology without compromising their unique character or spiritual integrity.

At the heart of any sanctuary’s AV system lies the audio component, crucial for ensuring that every

word of scripture, every note of a hymn, and every nuance of a sermon reaches the congregation with clarity and impact. High-quality sound systems, carefully designed and installed, can transform even the most challenging acoustic environments. These systems typically incorporate strategically placed speakers to deliver crisp, intelligible audio throughout the space. For larger sanctuaries, this might involve line array speaker systems to provide even coverage and rich, full-bodied sound. In more intimate settings, discreet inwall or ceiling speakers (see pages 8–9) or even portable speakers might suffice, preserving the aesthetic integrity of the space while still delivering excellent audio quality.

The visual aspect of worship has gained increasing prominence in recent years, with many churches embracing projection systems, DVLED walls , or strategically placed displays (see pages 10–11) to enhance the worship experience. These visual aids serve multiple purposes: displaying song lyrics to encourage congregational participation, showcasing scripture passages to reinforce the sermon’s message, and presenting supporting

imagery or video content to illustrate key points. The choice between projection and LED technology often depends on factors such as ambient light levels, viewing distances, and architectural considerations. Some churches opt for multiple smaller displays distributed throughout the sanctuary, ensuring clear sightlines for all attendees, while others prefer a single, large central display for a more focused visual experience.

In the modern era, the concept of the sanctuary has expanded beyond physical walls, with many churches now reaching global audiences through live streaming and recorded content. This digital extension of the ministry has become increasingly important, allowing churches to connect with homebound members, curious seekers, and remote followers alike. The complexity of streaming setups can range from simple to highly sophisticated. A basic streaming system might consist of a single high-quality PTZ camera connected to a dedicated live video device , capable of broadcasting services with minimal operator intervention. As needs grow, churches

can gradually expand their capabilities, adding multiple cameras, switching equipment, and even dedicated control rooms staffed by skilled volunteers or professionals.

The beauty of modern AV technology lies in its scalability and flexibility. A church can start with a modest setup and progressively enhance its capabilities as the congregation grows or as needs evolve. For instance, a single PTZ camera and basic streaming box can later be supplemented with additional cameras, more powerful encoding hardware, and sophisticated production software . This phased approach allows churches to manage costs while continually improving the quality and reach of their ministry.

Importantly, the integration of AV technology in sanctuaries requires a delicate balance. While these tools can greatly enhance the worship experience, they should never overshadow the spiritual essence of the space. Thoughtful design and installation are crucial to ensure that

technology complements rather than competes with the sanctuary’s sacred atmosphere. This might involve concealing speakers within architectural features, using projectors with quiet operation, or selecting displays that blend seamlessly with the interior design.

In conclusion, the judicious application of AV technology in church sanctuaries has the power to elevate the worship experience, making it more accessible, engaging, and impactful for congregants both present and remote. From crystal-clear audio that carries the word to every ear, to visuals that reinforce and illustrate the message, to streaming capabilities that extend the reach of the ministry far beyond the physical walls, these technological tools are becoming an integral part of modern worship. As churches continue to embrace these innovations, they open new avenues for connection, understanding, and spiritual growth, all while honoring the timeless traditions and sacred nature of their sanctuaries.

Line Array Speakers

High-quality sound systems, carefully designed and installed, can transform even the most challenging acoustic environments. These systems typically incorporate strategically placed speakers to deliver crisp, intelligible audio throughout the space. For larger sanctuaries, this might involve line array speaker systems to provide even coverage and rich, full-bodied sound.

Optimizing Live Streaming for Houses of Worship: Single and Multi-Camera Solutions with Kiloview Encoders

This article will offer solutions for two applications.

1. Online streaming at church with one camera shooting

With only one camera shooting at the speaker in the church, you fix the camera, and then connect its SDI cable with a video encoder which encodes and compress the source video. With configuration on network, the video could be streamed to CDN

(Content Delivery Network) or streaming platform, i.e., Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Wowza with low-latency, loss-less transmission. You can even stream to multiple platforms at the same time (See blog: Why and how to Stream to Multiple Platforms?) And your audience could watch with phone, pad or PC. This could have your audience clearly see what happened with higher resolution compared with phone’s.

Live Streaming at church with one camera shooting

2. Online streaming at church with multiple cameras shooting

With one camera shooting at the speaker and other cameras shooting at the audience in site in the church, you can fix the cameras from different angle, and then connect their SDI cable with corresponding video encoders. With connection to network, the videos taken could be streamed to production center/console for post-production or edits – you can switch the videos for checking as well. Then they can be played on CDN or streaming platform, i.e., Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Wowza with low-latency, loss-less transmission. You can even stream to multiple platforms at the same time. And your audience could watch with phone, pad or PC. Again this could have your audience clearly see what happened with higher resolution compared with phone’s.

Live Streaming at church with multiple cameras shooting

Also live streaming among different centers could be made easily. Deploy an encoder and a decoder in both of the main church and the branch church each. The camera signal of the main church is collected through SDI connected to the encoder, and the encoder is connected to the network and transmitted to the branch church with SRT protocol. The branch church uses the decoder to receive and decode the audio and video of the

main church to the displaying screen. The branch church also uses the encoder to transmit to the decoder in the main church via SRT protocol, and decodes and outputs the audio and video of the sub-church to the display screen, thereby realizing two-way audio and video interaction.

When it come to the joint intercommunication between a main church and several branch churches, or even multi-camera audio and video collection, it is necessary to use production center in the church for transmission. Each church center is configured with the same encoder for transmission.

The use of SRT protocol for remote transmission requires a public network address on either end. For multiple churches, it is recommended to equip the public network address in the main church. All the branch churches’ signals are transmitted to the main church for broadcast production, making sound audio and video interaction across different places.

Kiloview provides loads of solutions with its video encoders via SRT and NDI protocols in video transmission and conversion.

Traditionally, houses of worship relied on physical devices and conventional audio and video connections, requiring extensive wiring and

specialized technicians. In contrast, Kiloview’s advanced IP network-based solution transforms audio and video signals into data packets for seamless live streaming and remote system operation.

Key Advantages of IP Network-Based Setup:

1. Flexibility : Adaptable to diverse scenarios and needs, allowing for the installation and deployment of cameras and microphones in different spaces without the need for extensive wiring.

2. Scalability : Easily scalable and upgradable, supporting more complex audio and video systems with the addition of network nodes and devices.

3. Remote Access and Control : Enables remote monitoring and operation of the theater’s audio/ video system over the Internet, eliminating the need for on-site presence.

4. Cost Savings : Reduces the requirement for physical connections and devices, resulting in cost savings and operational simplicity.

Kiloview’s solution brings numerous advantages, including lightweight design, high efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, making it the best choice for House of Worship live streaming.

The Kiloview E3 provides a seamless and versatile solution for Houses of Worship, enabling simultaneous encoding of multimedia sources like lyrics, photos and videos; and camera feeds with flexible routing options, ensuring an enhanced and engaging streaming experience for online viewers.

Consider a practical example for a House of Worship service setup: run presentation tools like EasyWorship on a computer, connect the HDMI out to the E3, and set up a camera pointing at a speaker with its SDI out connected to the E3. This allows you to create a picture-in-picture layout to send to your preferred streaming destination for online viewers. With the picture in picture functionality, you can adjust which video source is the top layer and choose the position and scale of the top layer.

Another powerful capability is converting multiple baseband cameras into NDI HX2 or HX3. Connect two cameras, one via HDMI and one via SDI, to the E3, simultaneously encoding both cameras to NDI HX and integrating them into any NDI-compatible workflow. The Kiloview E3, a versatile dualchannel encoder, is capable of encoding 4K at 30 frames per second through HDMI and 1080p at 60 frames per second through the 3G SDI port. What makes the E3 stand out is its flexibility in encoding, supporting various protocols including NDI HX 2 and 3, SRT, RTMP, and more.

The E3 also comes with loop-through functionality for both HDMI and SDI ports, along with a Line In jack for incorporating master audio from an external mixer into your video stream. Once your audio and video sources are connected, the Kiloview E3 offers the freedom to choose where to send both channels of video, supporting up to 8 destinations per channel simultaneously. Whether you want to encode different sources to separate destinations or create a picture-inpicture layout for platforms like Facebook and YouTube, the E3 provides the flexibility you need. Additionally, the E3 enables you to send feeds to different destinations. For instance, you can send Camera A to Facebook and Camera B to an SRT destination simultaneously. The kiloview E3 allows for local recording directly to a usb drive or with a Nas system. In conclusion, the Kiloview E3 is a compact package packed with powerful encoding capabilities, offering seamless workflows and unmatched flexibility taking some of the load off of a primary switcher. How to Choose the Best Vocal Mics for Church Worship

Worship Matters. Worship can both inform and transform your congregation. In this guide, you will learn key factors to consider when selecting the best mics for your worship team to ensure crystal clear audio.

Worship leaders have a mission to create an environment where every congregation member feels comfortable lifting their voice in praise. For Houses

of Worship, singing is much more than just the physical act of making noise with one’s vocal cords. Ministry songs are a critical part of the service to get their congregants in the mood to receive the message.

It’s currently rare for vocalists, particularly those who sing in Houses for Worship, to lead songs without the aid of a microphone. When you add on the added pressure to broadcast your worship service via streaming platforms remotely, worship vocalists use microphones more than ever to ensure their audience can clearly hear the songs from any location.

A question that comes up repeatedly for Houses of Worship is figuring out which handheld microphones are best suited for praise vocals. The options can seem endless.

There are many considerations when picking microphones for the praise team, including handling noise, durability, feedback rejection, and sound. This guide will teach you key factors to consider when selecting the best handheld microphone for the worship vocalist to elevate your music experience.

What Are Microphone Polar Patterns?

Each microphone made today has what is known as a polar pattern, but what exactly is this? Though it may sound a little complicated, a polar pattern describes a microphone’s inherent directionality. In more specific terms, polar patterns refer to the sensitivity of any given microphone to sounds arriving from different angles to its central axis.

Omnidirectional Mics can pick up sound equally from all directions and accept sound from anywhere in the 360-degree sphere around the capsule. These types of mics have an open and natural sound, and they’re used frequently in the studio when the engineer wants to include the sound of the room in the recording.

When using omnidirectional mics, one thing to consider is that the mic will pick up any room sound or ambiance during the live performance. Omnidirectional mics are the most prone to feedback in a live sound environment.

Cardioid Mics’ directional characteristics prefer the front of a microphone, and they reject sounds coming from behind the mic – making them an ideal choice for live sound applications. Cardioid microphones also have a reduced sensitivity to sound coming from the sides.

Cardioid mics reduce the relative levels of room ambiance and other sounds coming from behind the mic.

Supercardioid, as the name suggests, is like cardioid but more directional. It exhibits even less sensitivity to sound coming in from the sides than a regular cardioid but more sensitivity to sound at the rear. Despite that, supercardioids perform better when eliminating background noise and focusing on a specific sound source.

Tips & Tricks to Reduce Handling Noise in Handheld Microphones

Handling noise is an important issue, especially in a live setting, compared to studio mics, which will have specially designed shock mounts to protect them from vibrations, bumps, and thumps. Mics used in a live sound environment like a worship service must contain ample internal shock mounts and vibration control.

If you line up ten different mics on the stands, you’re likely to notice dramatic differences in the sound caused by simply removing each mic from its clip. With some handheld mics, just shifting the mic in your hand can cause a dramatic rumble.

Mics that exhibit excessive handling noise will also pick up excess noise from anything that moves on or vibrates on the stage – such as footsteps, the kick drum, dancing, etc.

It’s critical to pick a handheld mic with an excellent design that includes internal shock and minimizes handling noise. Some microphones are practically immune to handling noise.

One thing to consider is that poor handling noise is a common fault of low-quality dynamic microphones. Shure has spent decades advancing our handheld microphones to have an excellent internal shock mount to help minimize handling noise.

Recommended Distances from the Microphone for Vocalists

The most common mistake is holding the microphone too close or too far from the mouth. Your vocalists will sound muffled and distorted or too

distant with no vocal sound by improperly holding the mic.

When people tell singers to “eat the microphone,” this does not mean they should literally eat it. “Eating the microphone” means you should keep the mic one or two inches from the mouth. The mic should be held no closer than 2 to 3 inches from their mouth during regular singing to avoid distortion.

There will be times when your worship vocalists will use more volume to hit higher or louder notes on the chorus of a song versus using lower or softer notes in the verses. When your vocalists get louder, the idea is to move the microphone slightly away from the mouth.

The variance in the distance will be proportionate with the increase in volume – that is, the louder you sing, the more you pull back – but how far is something you’ll need to determine by getting to know the mic. It will probably never be more than 5 or 6 inches. You will have to experiment a little, as the distance is dependent on the singer’s natural power and ability to project.

It can seem to be an unending array of options to choose from when picking the best handheld microphones for your worship team – while being a good steward of your house of Worship budget. We’re here to help by introducing you to three microphones that you will want to have in your audio arsenal. And best of all, these mics are all available as wired or wireless handheld microphones.

Four Best Handheld Microphones for Your Worship Team

The BETA 58A will ensure your vocalists stand out in modern worship bands that consist of drums and electric guitars. The BETA 58A microphone has

been known as the vocalists’ best friend for decades, elevating vocal presence to cut through the other sounds. The brightened midrange and bass rolloff give the lead and background vocals a mighty presence in the mix. The supercardioid pattern works harder to isolate your sound from every other source in the air and allows for high gain before feedback. Beta 58A’s internal pneumatic shockmount minimizes handling noise as well.

KSM9

The choice for the church’s most accomplished vocal performers, the KSM9 is a premium vocal condenser microphone that captures vocal subtlety with extraordinary detail. The KSM9 delivers clear articulation and precise audio production. The KSM9’s advanced suspension shockmount system minimizes handling and stand noise, while a built-in subsonic filter eliminates unwanted low-frequency rumble. If you want studio-quality sound in the most demanding worship environment, the KSM9 is excellent.

SM58

The affordable SM58 is one of the most widely used vocal microphones. Worship leaders worldwide agree that the SM58 is vital to amplifying their ministry. And most importantly, your house of Worship budget will love them. These mics have a typical cardioid pattern and are built like a tank – meaning they can take a variety of abuse and still work beautifully. The SM58 also uses an internal shock mount to reduce handling noise.

Due to an increased extension in its frequency response, the BETA 87A is excellent for low-pitched voices. The BETA 87A has a super-cardioid pattern. This mic has a noticeably brighter tone, and it helps vocalists stand out and break out of the mix. The Beta 87A microphones capture vocal subtlety with

extraordinary detail to deliver clear articulation, functional flexibility, and precise vocal reproduction for live performance. Like all other Shure mics, the Beta 87A is built to withstand just about anything to ensure you can perform worship service after service.

Words Mean Stuff. I Read It in a Book

Safeguarding Your Church: Why Mass Notification Matters More Than Ever

It turns out that words are important. I read about it in a book once. Words can be put together to form thoughts and stuff. Then you can share them with people. Words are important.

There aren’t too many places where the words are more important than a church, otherwise known

as “House of Worship.” I am a big fan of the word “church.” It pretty much says the same thing as “House of Worship” without making it weird when you make it plural.

Now that we have a few facts established, there are some places in and around churches where we

don’t think about our need to hear and understand words. We are all clear that the sanctuary needs to sound great. That is generally the place where the most important words are put together and spoken. We don’t often think about some of the other functions of the church and our need to hear everywhere. These are social places. It is where large groups get together to meet up, talk about stuff, worship.

Folks in AV use our marketing platforms to talk about “pixel pitch” or megabytes. Often, we blab about beam-steering or auto-framing. One thing we don’t talk about enough is “notification”.

We are amazing at getting people to hear the words. The words to a song, the words in a sermon, the words in a wedding vow. We are great at that. There are some other words that are equally important, and as an industry, we need to tell our customers about these words, even though it is less fashionable. We need to do a better job in telling people about immediate, important things. Like when a bad person shows up to do some bad stuff. Yes. There are bad people, and sometimes they do bad stuff.

Starin has been at forefront of mass notification since the category terribly came into existence. There was a time we didn’t need this kind of emergency notification, but that time has passed.

Starin was one of the early partners of Singlewire, the makers of Informacast brand mass notification Software. We still are. We also were the first distributor of Advanced Network Devices IP

speakers. We have been doing this a long time. We can help you get your church campus covered for whatever might happen BEFORE IT HAPPENS. We are actual experts.

Here are a couple of things to note. If you think you can just Tweet or Facebook a problem and everyone will know right away, it is not the case. An on-premises system that does not rely on public networks is critical in an urgent situation. Public networks give priority to Public Safety services.... hence the name “public”. Your parishioners might be last in line to get their messages when stuff is going sideways.

Creating a plan for what might happen is not hard. Keeping that plan in mind as you make investments in technology is what will save the day. Make sure your digital signage is set up to communicate urgent messaged. Use Advanced Network Devices visual products to let people know where to go and what to do.

All those messages can be set up, recorded, and written in advance, so that if something were to happen, there is a small set of decisions to be made. People will have a button to push that says “shelter in place” or “Safely Evacuate the Building’.... depending on the situation. We might make a button that says, “there are donuts in the break room.” That is certainly urgent.

Give us a call to help you start your notification plan. We can get you started, connected with the right tech, and guide you build a system we all hope you never have to use...unless “donuts”.

Meeting Rooms/Offices

Meeting rooms and office spaces in a church are essential for administrative tasks, planning sessions, and small group gatherings. Equipping these areas with the right AV technology can significantly enhance productivity and communication. Audio solutions like speakers and microphones provide clear sound for presentations, virtual meetings, and discussions, ensuring that every participant can hear and be heard. Interactive displays allow for dynamic presentations, brainstorming, and collaboration, making meetings more engaging and effective. Cameras add the capability for video conferencing, connecting staff and volunteers who cannot be physically present.

Mass notification systems also play a crucial role in these spaces, allowing for quick communication of important messages or alerts.

Personal workspaces benefit from accessories like ergonomic mice, keyboards, and other tools that improve comfort and efficiency.

Additional accessories such as mounts, cables, and control panels help streamline the setup and operation of all AV components, making the technology easy to use and manage. With the right equipment, meeting and office rooms can function as efficient, connected spaces that support the mission of the church.

The Heart of Operations: Supporting Office Spaces in Houses of Worship

While often overlooked, the administrative offices are the lifeblood that keeps a house of worship running smoothly. These spaces play a pivotal role in the daily operations of the entire campus, ensuring that the needs of the congregation are met efficiently and that all logistical and organizational aspects are handled seamlessly.

To support the collaborative and administrative tasks happening in these offices, modern technology solutions are essential. Implementing Unified Communication (UC) video bars and meeting room and collaboration solutions

can greatly enhance productivity by enabling staff to conduct video meetings, share content, and communicate effectively with team members, congregants, and external partners. These systems are designed for simplicity and ease of use, making them accessible to users of any technical proficiency, ensuring that staff can focus on their work without technical obstacles.

In addition to facilitating communication, the office is also likely where many critical systems are monitored and managed. Emergency and mass notification systems , for example, ensure

that everyone on campus can be immediately informed and guided in the event of an emergency. Integration with access control and digital signage (see page 10 for digital signage) further enhances campus safety and communication. Whether it’s controlling who enters the facility or providing clear directions through the campus, these systems work together to create a secure and well-organized environment.

Investing in technology for these operational spaces not only ensures a more efficient administration but also provides a safety net for everyone who walks through the doors of a house of worship. By centralizing communication, security, and management in the office, church leadership can confidently focus on their mission knowing that the infrastructure is in place to support their goals.
