Keeping an open mind as an older adult can be tricky and complicated. But fear not, as there are several ways you stay mentally flexible, curious, and receptive to new ideas and experiences with age.
There are many stereotypes about older adults and closemindedness. Naturally, some are more accurate than others.
Some say as older folks have established routines and beliefs, that it can be hard to leave the comfort of familiarity. But many people, no matter their life stage, fear change.
There’s also the rapid pace of technological and societal changes can be overwhelming, especially for those who did not grow up in the digital age. It can be an isolating world and the generational gap can be incredibly polarising.
Finally, as people age, it’s said they might experience cognitive rigidity. This means they may find it harder to adapt to new ideas or ways of thinking.
The brain's plasticity, or its ability to change and adapt, can decrease with age, making it more challenging to modify established thought patterns or beliefs.
But Age Concern CEO Greta Bond refutes these assumptions. Who is to say that we become more close-minded as we age?
She says she often finds that older people are actually much more open-minded than younger people.
“After all, they’ve lived longer, seen more, and often have a much wider experience of the world than younger people give them credit for,” Greta says.
“Often opportunities for learning are stifled by the assumptions that older people are closed off to new information – if older people aren’t responding, how can you promote your message better?
Keeping an Strategies to stay
“A person who is 85 years old has seen more technological change alone: the end of World War II, the building and dismantling of the Berlin Wall, the moon landing, the first cell phone, the Internet, and AI. They are change experts.”
STAY IN SCHOOL - Greta says keeping an open mind starts by always asking questions.
“Make a commitment to lifelong learning, recognising that there is a fresh opportunity every day to learn something new.”
This can take the form of formal learning. For example, taking a class, reading a book from the library, watching television, talking to your grandchildren, and meeting new people.
“There are organisations such as U3A (University of the Third Age) that are dedicated to learning in later life, which many older people enjoy.”
As for other ideas, keep learning, watch the news, stay informed about the changes around you, and have your say in political and community matters.
If possible, travel to new places. Experiencing different cultures first-hand can be a powerful way to open your mind.
Finally, recognise and challenge your own cognitive biases. Nobody is right all the time.
Try to understand how your background and experiences influence your judgments and be willing to adjust your thinking.
Practice gratitude and mindfulness by journaling, and consider writing down your memories to help you reflect and develop emotional intelligence. Ask questions and show interest in new ideas and viewpoints.
Volunteer, seek challenges, embrace uncertainty, and consider intergenerational activities. Being open to the idea that you might be wrong can be liberating and open the door to new learning.

open mind curious and perceptive
Advice on advice - Older adults can be subject to an overwhelming amount of advice. This article’s sheer existence does contribute to the advice overload, but here is its disclaimer.
“I think it’s pertinent to remember that the phrase is “to offer advice” which suggests that it’s up to the recipient to accept it or not, as suits them,” Greta says.
“People can have many complex reasons for not accepting advice – it’s important to recognise that people have agency, and the right to choose to act on it or not.
“As with anyone, the best any of us can do when offering advice is to be clear about our reasoning, point to the advantages of a course of action, and recognise the disadvantages.
“With regards to accepting advice – if you really trust the person advising, it’s worth considering it and seeking more information if you need it.
“If you really disagree, that’s your right, as well! If you have more questions, don’t feel that it’s discourteous to ask them. Information is power!”
Age Concern Canterbury - Greta suggests that any older adult concerned about their wellbeing calls Age Concern Canterbury.
Like other branches nationwide, Age Concern Canterbury offers a range of services to support and enhance the dignity and well-being of older adults.
If people are concerned about social connection, using digital technology, strength and balance or how to exercise, safer driving, support around accommodation, or even interventions where older people are subject to abuse, they should get in touch.
“We’re a leading provider of services for older people in Canterbury, and if we can’t help you ourselves, we will help you navigate to an organisation that can.”
Remember, keeping an open mind is a continuous process that involves constantly challenging yourself and your perspectives.
It's about embracing change and growth, regardless of age. Stay humble, positive, and curious.
If you’ve made it to the end of this article, your journey has already started.
Breaking generational barriers Building deeper connections with your family
By Jamie Quinn
Are you struggling to connect to your grandchildren? Maybe you’re feeling like an outsider in your own family. As the world changes, so do family dynamics, usually due to generational barriers.
Generational gaps are caused by age and the situation of the world at the time one generation has grown up. It is a chasm that separates the behaviours and beliefs belonging to family members of different generations.
The first step to bridging the generational gap is understanding the existing barriers. These barriers can stem from differences in communication styles, opposing values, generational stereotypes, cultural changes, technological advancements, and generational trauma.
Communication styles are often a significant barrier between generations, with “Baby Boomers” growing up believing children should be seen, not heard. At the same time, Millennials onwards are embracing gentle parenting and creating safe family dynamics where children’s voices and feelings are valued.
Younger generations place a higher value on individualism, equality, and personal freedom, while older generations might prioritise authority, tradition, and conformity. These opposing values can lead to conflict within families, with grandparents disagreeing on how grandchildren should be raised. This alone can cause a disconnect between grandparent and grandchild.
Effective communication involves taking the time to understand a new way of communicating and adapting to make sure your grandchild feels heard and respected. Keeping an open mind and engaging with your grandchild when they express their feelings and struggles will open up opportunities for a much deeper connection.
Sharing stories and family history can help grandchildren understand their roots and feel more connected to their family. This not only provides a sense of identity but also helps to create understanding and respect for each other's experiences.
Stereotypes about different generations can also create barriers to understanding and communication. These stereotypes can lead to preconceived notions and judgments about each other, which can strain relationships and lead to misunderstandings.
With these stereotypes comes a lack of common interests. Younger generations are known to be tech-savvy and place value on digital communication and social media. It’s common for generations to have differing hobbies, leading to a lack of shared experiences. However, when we close ourselves off to societal advancements out of stubbornness, we also close
ourselves off to bridging the gap between our family members who are moving with the times.
These differences in interests don’t have to become a barrier. They can be embraced and used as an opportunity for growth and learning. Shared interests can evolve over time, and the more interaction you have with your grandchild, the more opportunity there is to find common interests.
Traumatic events that occurred during a particular generation can have long-lasting effects, influencing their interactions with other generations. These traumas can range from personal experiences to larger societal events, such as wars, economic depressions, or pandemics.
For example, grandparents who lived through significant societal shifts, such as women’s rights movements or economic depression, might have different expectations and fears than their family. This might present as insecurities around instability and a desire for control due to having lived through hardship and scarcity.
It’s important to know that recognising and acknowledging this trauma is the first step to healing. However, remember that other generations have experienced their own societal events and struggles; try not to dismiss their experiences just because they’re different from yours.
By acknowledging these traumas and their effects on our interactions with other generations, we can work towards understanding and empathy. By discussing these experiences, grandparents and grandchildren can gain a better understanding of each other's perspectives and experiences.
Spending time with your family is the most important building block to building stronger relationships. Even if it’s just a few hours, the shared time can make a big difference in creating a connection between grandparent and grandchild.
This could be as simple as a shared meal or an evening together at home. Regardless of the activity, the key to quality time is simply being present and engaged with each other. By spending time together, you create shared experiences and memories to bond over and reminisce on later.
Breaking down generational barriers takes time, patience and understanding. By actively engaging and communicating, you can build strong connections with your family, no matter the age difference.
Creating connections
As we age, life transitions can lead to a sense of isolation. Retirement, changes in health, and even the loss of loved ones can all disrupt our social connections. However, the desire for connection and belonging remains strong throughout our years.
The good news is that building meaningful social bonds in your golden years is possible, and it's essential for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
The human need for connection is deeply rooted in our biology. From infancy, we rely on others for survival and development. This need for connection doesn't disappear with age; it transforms.
Social connections become a source of emotional support, a buffer against loneliness and isolation, and a source of joy and fulfilment.
Loneliness in older adults is a serious concern with extensive consequences. It can significantly impact both physical and mental health. Notably, it has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension and heart disease.
The stress and anxiety that accompany feelings of loneliness can contribute to physiological changes, such as increased blood pressure and decreased immunity, which in turn elevate the risk of heart-related conditions.
Loneliness has also been connected to poorer sleep quality, leading to a number of negative health effects.
Mentally, the impact of loneliness on older adults can be equally debilitating, significantly increasing the risk of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. The feeling of isolation can lead to a sense of despair and hopelessness, which can exacerbate or lead to the development of depressive disorders.
This mental health decline is not only a matter of diminished quality of life but can also worsen physical health, creating a vicious cycle where psychological and physical health negatively affect each other.
By Jamie Quinn
Anxiety disorders, which can stem from or be aggravated by loneliness, further contribute to this cycle, potentially leading to social withdrawal and reinforcing the isolation that fuels these conditions.
Strong social connections, on the other hand, offer a wealth of benefits.
Boosting mental well-being
Social interaction stimulates the brain, reducing the risk of cognitive decline and depression. Laughter, shared experiences, and intellectual engagement with others all contribute to a more positive outlook.
Enhancing physical health
Social connections can directly impact physical health in older adults. Studies have shown that social connections can strengthen the immune system, making older adults less susceptible to illness. Social interaction can also help lower blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Providing a sense of purpose
Feeling valued and connected to others helps maintain a sense of self-worth and belonging. Engaging with others can also offer a sense of accomplishment and shared experiences, which can further support this.
There are many ways to build social connections in your older years. Technology can connect you with others regardless of location. Social media platforms, video conferencing apps, and even online gaming communities can bridge the generational gap, allowing you to stay connected with children, grandchildren, and even friends scattered across the globe.
Getting involved in your community offers opportunities for social interaction, a sense of purpose, and the chance to contribute your skills and experiences. You can volunteer at a local charity, join a book club at the library, or participate in a community garden.
Staying physically active not only benefits your body but also boosts your social well-being. Group fitness classes, yoga sessions, or even team sports can provide a platform for social interaction and build new friendships.
Keep your mind sharp by engaging in challenging activities, such as puzzles, reading, or learning a new skill. Participating in learning groups or workshops can provide social interaction and a sense of accomplishment.
While building new friendships is important, don't neglect the connections you already have. Family relationships are the foundation of social support for older adults. Make an effort to stay in touch with children and grandchildren.
Schedule regular phone calls, video chats, or family gatherings. Even a simple postcard or handwritten note can brighten someone's day: Organise family outings, game nights, or find a hobby you can all share.
These activities create lasting memories and strengthen family bonds. Be understanding of changing family dynamics. Adapt traditions to accommodate busy schedules or evolving needs. Don't be afraid to ask for assistance when needed, and be willing to offer help to younger family members. Mutual support strengthens relationships.
Creating and maintaining social connections in older age is not just about preventing loneliness. It's about enhancing our quality of life, promoting physical and mental health, and ensuring we live with a sense of purpose and belonging.
How to stay active and engaged Retirement reimagined
By Paige O’Brien
Embracing retirement can be an inviting yet scary phase in your life. The thought of slowing down and easing away from the workforce opens up a lot of spare time for an individual.
However, there are plenty of fulfilling and healthy ways to fill your days and keep you busy at a reasonable pace.
Developing a routine that includes both old and new habits encourages a healthy body and mind, making retirement seem not as daunting as society may make you think.
For example, staying active is crucial, not only for younger bodies but older bodies too. Low-impact exercises and sports are perfect for those looking to keep their joints happy while still getting a good workout. Swimming is a full-body workout that is easy on the joints and a great way to cool off in the warmer months. Walking is another simple yet effective exercise that can be done anywhere, anytime.
It is a great way to stay active and can be turned into a social activity by having a friend come along or by joining a local walking group.

No matter what age you are, learning never stops, and semi-retirement is the perfect time and opportunity to pick up or develop a new hobby or skill.
Learning a new language can be a challenging yet rewarding experience, and activities such as writing and photography can be a fun and creative outlet.
Other exercises suitable for a low-impact workout include yoga, golf and bowls, which also encourages social interaction as a bonus.
No matter what age you are, learning never stops, and semi-retirement is the perfect time and opportunity to pick up or develop a new hobby or skill. Learning a new language can be a challenging yet rewarding experience, and activities such as writing and photography can be a fun and creative outlet. Gardening is a great way to get outside in the sun and soak up some rays, get active and enjoy the beauty of nature.
While it is essential to focus on how to keep yourself healthy physically in retirement, it is also important to strongly consider your mental and emotional health. Social interaction is a great way to improve your
mental health, as by joining local clubs or community groups, you are surrounding yourself with people who may also be in the same boat as you and can relate to what you may be feeling.
Another way to keep up your social interaction is to keep in close touch with your family and friends. Make the most of the new generation's technology and make the effort to have regular calls, texts, video chats or even emails to help maintain those relationships.
It is important to remember that the key to a fulfilling retirement is to find activities and hobbies that you enjoy and that suit your lifestyle. Although daunting sometimes, retirement is a great time to explore new interests, stay active and enjoy your life at your own pace.

'Every year, bereaved New Zealand families are paying lawyers millions more than they need to, for basic paperwork, after a loved one dies' - says Kiwilaw lawyer, Cheryl Simes.
Spurred by a local client who needed letters of administration, Cheryl has developed a nationwide online service for bereaved families who need High Court approval ('probate') before they can uplift their loved one's financial assets or deal with their loved one's land. Although now based in North Canterbury, Cheryl's service is available anywhere in New Zealand or indeed overseas.
Probate is usually needed even if there is a valid will.
You do not have to use the lawyer who holds the will
'Bereavement is hard. But before agreeing to anything, ask your lawyer for a specific probate estimate.
'Most lawyers charge from $1,000 to $3,000 just for probate, not counting the rest of the estate administration.'
Check the fee, before you agree.
Why use Kiwilaw?
It really is straightforward. An initial no-obligation online screening checks the will and any complications. If extra fees are required, you are told at that point. To go ahead, you answer questions in a simple online interview. Court-ready documents then arrive at your door, complete with instructions on what needs to be signed, how, where, and by whom, and how to send everything to the High Court for processing.
Where there's a valid will, Kiwilaw's fee is usually just $490 and you pay the $200 High Court fee direct.

Ageing is a universal journey Unexpected ways
We all know the classic signs: wrinkles, grey hair, the sudden need for a nap after lunch.
But what about the subtler hints, the whispers of time that creep in without us noticing? Age can reveal itself unexpectedly, from the words we use to the apps we avoid.
Our quirky habits, preferences, and even vocabulary choices can give away our vintage, but remember, it’s not about clinging to youth! Age is something to celebrate.
The disconnected - How old we feel is maybe just as important as how old we are. The idea of ‘felt age’ is influenced by many things, including our sense of connection and authenticity.
Finding meaning and purpose in life can be challenging when we feel disconnected from our true selves and passions. If we lose that spark, life feels less vibrant and exciting.
A lack of purpose can lead to stagnation and a sense of time simply passing us by, making us feel older than our years.
When we're not true to ourselves, we might miss out on experiences and relationships that could challenge and expand us.
We feel much younger at heart by reducing stress, reigniting our passions, and fostering a sense of purpose.
The peacekeeper - Another unexpected way we show our age is by giving up our favourite things to keep the peace.
While age often brings maturity, giving up favourite things solely to avoid conflict can sometimes signify resignation rather than growth.
Constantly giving up our favourite things can lead to resentment and a sense of lost identity.
Finding a balance between compromise and self-expression is crucial for long-term happiness, regardless of age.
Indeed, our preferences can change over time, and the context of making a sacrifice can be for the greater good. At other times, though, it might be a sign of unhealthy dynamics that need addressing.
Staying true to ourselves ultimately leads to greater fulfilment and personal growth, even when navigating conflict.
This authenticity contributes to youthfulness and vibrancy, even at the cost of some temporary discomfort.
The next time you try to keep the peace, ask yourself if you’ve kept your inner peace as well.
The dental damned - Neglecting dental care can lead to issues often associated with ageing, such as tooth loss or receding gums.
we show our age?
The WHO Global Oral Health Status Report (2022) estimated that oral diseases affect nearly 3.5 billion people worldwide, with three of four people living in middleincome countries.
Toothaches, gum sensitivity, and difficulty chewing can significantly impact quality of life and well-being.
Missing teeth, visible cavities, and bad breath can also affect self-confidence and social interactions, which might chip away at one’s zest for life.
The mouth is the gateway to the body, and problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body.
Periodontitis, a severe gum infection, has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases because bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream, leading to inflammation and arterial disease.
Diabetes and gum disease often coexist, so good oral health can help improve blood sugar control. Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for preventing these health issues, among many others.
Regular dental check-ups, brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and avoiding tobacco are crucial steps in preserving oral health and, by extension, overall health.
The archaist - Language is a fascinating window into age, cultural experiences and generational differences.
Using outdated language might age you, but does that mean you should change which words you use? Certainly not!
However, developing online literacy, using abbreviations, and keeping up with slang terms are great ways to stay connected to today’s youth.
Age is just one factor influencing how we communicate; other factors like personality, education, and regional variations also play a role.
It's important to avoid making assumptions based solely on language and focus on understanding the individual's message rather than judging their age.
The risk-averse - It's inaccurate to say that being risk-averse directly shows age, but it is a significant stereotype. Maintaining a healthy level of daredevilry and audacity keeps us young.
Studies have shown that older adults are generally more risk-averse regarding potential losses than younger adults. This is evident in decision-making scenarios involving gambling or financial choices.
However, the age difference is less pronounced when considering potential gains. Older adults might be more open to risk when the potential reward outweighs the potential loss.
While there's a tendency for people to become more risk-averse with age, it's important to understand that this is not a universal rule, and there are many factors beyond age that influence risk-taking behaviour. Unique personal factors and life experiences influence our level of risk-aversity.
Staying true to ourselves ultimately leads to greater fulfilment and personal growth, even when navigating conflict.

Bad life advice
By Ben O’Connell
Unpicking old sayings
If you wouldn’t accept their criticism, don’t accept their advice.
Common life advice often comes with good intentions but can be quite misguided or unhelpful when thought about more closely. Think twice when you next hear these phrases.
Always follow your passion
While following your passion can lead to a fulfilling career, it's not always practical or financially viable. Passion alone doesn't guarantee success or job opportunities.
It's often more realistic to find a balance between what you love, what you're good at, and what can sustain you financially.
Never give up
Persistence is important, but knowing when to pivot or cut your losses is equally crucial. Sometimes, persevering on a failing path can lead to wasted time, resources, and missed opportunities elsewhere.
You can be anything you want to be
Yes, you should dream and work towards your goals. However, this advice ignores the role of systemic factors, personal circumstances, and inherent abilities, leading to unrealistic expectations and disappointment.
It's better to focus on improving and playing to your strengths while acknowledging your limitations.
The customer is always right
While good customer service is crucial, this phrase can be detrimental if it leads to employees being mistreated or companies bending over backward for unreasonable demands.
Striving for excellent customer service while protecting the dignity and wellbeing of employees is the more balanced approach.
Money can't buy happiness
While it’s true that happiness is not solely dependent on wealth, financial stability can alleviate stress and provide opportunities that can lead to a happier life.
It's more accurate to say that money is not the only component of happiness, and its effects on wellbeing diminish after meeting basic needs.
Fake it till you make it
Confidence is important, but overconfidence or pretending to have skills or knowledge you don't have can lead to failure and loss of trust.
Authenticity and a willingness to learn are often more valuable than faking competence.
Play hard to get
While the intention behind this advice is often to avoid seeming too eager or desperate, it can backfire by creating unnecessary confusion and miscommunication.
Healthy relationships are built on honesty, respect, and clear communication. Playing games can lead to misunderstandings and may cause potentially good relationships to falter before they even start.
It also perpetuates a manipulative approach to relationships rather than fostering genuine connections.
Ignore the bullies, then they’ll stop
This advice oversimplifies the complex dynamics of bullying.
Ignoring bullies does not always lead to them stopping their behaviour. Sometimes it can even escalate the situation if the bully is seeking a reaction and not getting one.
It's important to address bullying behaviour assertively and involve professionals when necessary. Victims should be encouraged to speak out and seek support rather than just endure silently.
Live each day like it’s your last
This advice aims to emphasise the importance of appreciating life, but it can be impractical and reckless if taken literally.
Planning for the future and considering the consequences of your actions are also key components of a balanced life.
Man up
This phrase is typically used to tell guys to deal with a problem by being tough or suppressing emotions.
It promotes harmful stereotypes about masculinity and suggests that showing emotion or vulnerability is a sign of weakness.
This can be damaging to mental health and hinder open and honest communication.
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
This saying can minimise the impact of trauma and serious challenges.
Not all difficult experiences lead to personal growth, and some can cause lasting harm without proper support and coping mechanisms.
Be positive
Constant positivity is unrealistic and can be toxic. It's important to acknowledge and process negative feelings rather than suppress them.
Emotional health involves experiencing a spectrum of emotions and dealing with them in a healthy way.
Good things come to those who wait
Patience is a virtue, but this advice can be used to justify passivity. Often, proactive steps and taking initiative are necessary to achieve goals and make positive changes in life.
Giving good advice
In all these cases, the advice fails to acknowledge the complexity of human emotions and social interactions. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to your deeply personal and situation-specific problems.
Better advice considers individual circumstances and promotes open communication, emotional intelligence, and seeking support when needed.
It's important to take common advice with a grain of salt and consider how it applies to your unique situation and values. Critical thinking and personal judgment are key when deciding which advice to follow.

Growing pains
By Jamie Quinn
Ageing can be a real pain in the neck. And hips. And knees… But it doesn’t have to be.
As we get older, it’s natural to experience aches and pains, and age-related changes start happening much earlier than you may think. Changes to muscle tone and bone strength actually begin in your 30s-40s.
Joint pain is a common symptom of ageing. It can develop in any joint in the body, but it’s most frequently seen in the hips, knees and back. Typical joint pain can be characterised by discomfort, stiffness, and sometimes swelling in the affected area.
Common causes of joint pain include:
Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of joint pain in older adults. It's a degenerative disease that occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones wears away. As the cartilage thins, the bones rub against each other, causing pain and stiffness.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, causing inflammation and pain.
Lack of Physical Activity can contribute to joint pain by accelerating muscle and bone degeneration. Regular physical activity can help maintain joint health and flexibility.
Regular physical activity is crucial in managing joint pain. Even if you are experiencing discomfort, there are still exercises you can do to work around it. Low-impact exercises like swimming, cycling or yoga can help maintain joint health and flexibility without aggravating an unhappy joint.
A healthy diet is also key in preventing further issues. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can help maintain joint health. Foods with anti-inflammatory properties, like omega-3 fatty acids, can also be beneficial.
Maintaining a healthy weight goes hand in hand with diet and exercise. Extra weight puts additional stress on the joints, especially the knees and hips, increasing the risk of osteoarthritis.
For more severe pain, it’s best to consult your doctor, as treatment may be necessary. This could include medication to manage pain and inflammation, supplements, physical therapy or assistive devices.
Ageing doesn’t have to mean a life filled with constant aches and pains. Nutrition, lifestyle choices, and pain management can help improve the quality of life for many people. Remember, it’s never too late to start making healthy changes.
*This article provides general information and guidance regarding the prevention and management of joint pain and aches associated with aging. However, it is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you are experiencing pain, discomfort, or mobility issues, please consult your healthcare provider immediately.
Accepting ageing
Coming to terms with the changing you
Ageing is a beautiful and natural process to be celebrated; it also brings about changes, both physical and mental, leading to a spectrum of emotions.
The realisation of our evolving limitations can be a source of frustration and even grief. However, it also gives us an opportunity to embrace a new phase of life filled with resilience and a deeper appreciation for the things that truly matter.
The transition into our later years can prompt a revaluation of selfidentity and worth, often onset by societal attitudes toward ageing. Society celebrates a billion-dollar anti-ageing industry when we should be celebrating the privilege of ageing itself. No wonder it isn’t easy to grow old when we live in a society fixated on youth.
Acceptance is the key to ageing gracefully. Switching our mindset to view ageing in a more positive light empowers us to continue living our lives to the fullest.
Coming to terms with physical limitations requires a practical and proactive approach. It’s essential to prioritise health through proper nutrition, regular movement, and mental stimulation to keep our minds and bodies in top shape.
As we age, our connections with others can decrease. Actively seeking to maintain and build new relationships is vital.
We often reach a point where we only spend time with people our own age, but having a broad range of friends in different life stages is incredibly helpful to keep our social lives healthy.
Don’t be too quick to shut down different ideas and new ways of thinking; you might find that an open mind keeps you young.
Ageing may close some doors, but they also open others. It’s the perfect time to explore new hobbies and interests that were sidelined during the hustle and bustle of earlier life stages.
This is your time to live with a sense of purpose; whether it’s art, gardening, or even volunteering, pursuing new passions can be beneficial for our social lives and mental well-being.
We need to challenge our assumptions about ageing. Consider what ageing means to you and where those messages came from. It might be time to take a look at the messaging you are absorbing through social media and advertising. As they say, comparison is the thief of joy.
One of the most beautiful parts of accepting ageing is the ability to live in the present. With more awareness, small moments can take on new significance. When we appreciate the beauty in everyday life and find joy in simplicity, it becomes second nature.

household waste reduction
The Council has two main goals when it comes to waste.
We need to:
1. Improve the efficiency of resource use, so less waste is created.
2. Reduce the harmful effects of waste.
There are heaps of ways you can reduce the amount of waste that comes from your household, that are easy and cheap to do.
• Take your reusable shopping and produce bags to the supermarket
• Choose products with little or no packaging
• Buy in bulk to reduce packaging: bring cleaned-out jars, bottles, or storage containers to refill at the bulk store
• Use reusables, not disposables, where feasible – that includes coffee cups, cleaning cloths and so much more
• Put a ‘no circulars’, ‘no junk mail’ or ‘no ad mail’ sticker on your letterbox
• Learn ways to reduce household food waste by following the National Food Waste Prevention Campaign - Love Food Hate Waste which has great advice like:
- Make a weekly meal plan
We can’t accept:
- Take a shopping list to the supermarket (and stick to it)
- Only buy the quantity of perishables, like fruit and vegetables, that you will be able to eat in the next few days
- Store bread in the freezer
- Eat leftovers or freeze them for a quick meal
- Use the older stuff first
• Attend a seminar, presentation, or site tour around the Southbrook resource recovery park with Lesley Ottey, our Sustainability Educator.
If you do have packaging to recycle, only put the kind of materials we can accept into the bin. Make sure it’s clean and loose - not bagged up. Remember, kerbside recycling has been standardised nationally to minimise confusion about what Councils accept.
Only food and green garden waste can go in your organics bins: paper towels, food contaminated paper and cardboard have to go in the rubbish.
Plastics numbered 3, 4, 6 & 7
No containers larger than 3L or smaller than 150ml
Soft plastics or any plastic you can scrunch into a ball
Takeaway cups and liquid cartons
To ensure your bin gets emptied and to avoid contamination of recycling:
Keep items loose
Don’t squash bottles, tins or cans
Put all lids in the rubbish
Make sure everything is clean
Repeated contamination may result in withdrawal of your kerbside collection service.
Paper smaller than an envelope
Compostable items
Clothes and toys
Nappies
Polystyrene
Pans and foils
Window glass, crockery & light bulbs
Batteries
General rubbish or food.
Your RECYCLING bin is only for the following CLEAN items…

Redefining retirement one mile at a time A nomadic adventure
Imagine waking up to a new sunrise in a different location every other week, your life neatly packed into a caravan, with the world at your doorstep, ready for exploration.
This dream is becoming a reality for a growing number of retirees who, at a time traditionally seen for settling down, are instead choosing a life of adventure on the road.
The allure of this nomadic lifestyle is undeniable. It offers a unique blend of freedom, adventure, and simplicity that is captivating for those looking to make the most of their retirement years. The idea of spending these years exploring, meeting new people, and experiencing the vast diversity of landscapes and cultures within one's own country is a compelling alternative to the conventional sedentary retirement life.
Life on the road is not just about sightseeing and leisure. It's a profound journey of self-discovery and reconnection. Freed from the daily grind and the constraints of a stationary life, these intrepid retirees find themselves developing new skills, indulging in long-forgotten hobbies, and rediscovering passions that were put on hold during their working years.
Community is a surprising yet vital aspect of this lifestyle. Contrary to the notion of a lonely wanderer, life on the road often leads to the formation of deep and lasting connections. Caravan parks, campgrounds, and motorhome clubs become melting pots of like-minded individuals, each with their own stories and experiences to share.
This sense of community is a strong and comforting presence, offering social interactions and bonds that are often stronger than what one might find in traditional residential communities.
Financially, this lifestyle can be both liberating and challenging. On one hand, living in a caravan significantly reduces living expenses, allowing retirees to stretch their pensions and savings further. On the other hand, it requires careful budgeting and financial planning, especially considering fuel costs, caravan maintenance, and unexpected expenses.
The challenges, however, are part of the appeal. They bring about a sense of accomplishment and resilience. Learning to live in a compact space, dealing with the unpredictability of travel, and managing resources efficiently are all part of the journey that enriches the experience.
For those with a sense of adventure and a desire for a life less ordinary, retirement offers a golden opportunity to hit the road and embrace the freedom and joy of living nomadically. It's a choice that speaks of courage, curiosity, and a zest for life that transcends the conventional boundaries of age. For these spirited individuals, retirement is not the end of the road; it’s a new beginning, a path to uncharted territories and unexplored possibilities.

2. To make the salad. Combine the shallots, pine nuts, herbs, and chilli flakes in a large bowl. Heat the olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat until it begins to sizzle. Pour the hot oil over the shallots.
3. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Boil the pasta to al dente, according to package directions. Drain. Add the pasta to the bowl with the oil. Add the olives, peppers, tomatoes, chickpeas, and pepperoncini. Pour over the dressing and toss well. Add the feta.

Ten steps to help lower fuel costs Want to lower your fuel costs?
Service and tune your vehicle
Regular services and tune ups could reduce fuel consumption by up to four percent. To make your car more efficient, replacing worn components such as spark plugs and regularly changing lubricants and filters is important. An MTA General Repairer can help keep your car in good condition.
Use the recommended grade of oil and fuel
Use the oil and fuel recommended in your owner’s handbook to maximise fuel economy.
Properly inflate your tyres
Check tyre pressure monthly and before long trips. Underinflated tyres are a significant contributor to increased fuel consumption. Not sure if your tyres are correctly inflated? Use our tyre checklist to find out!
Fill it up
When filling up, stop at the first click – if you continue beyond this, you risk overflowing the tank and wasting fuel. Also, remember it’s better to use most of your fuel before visiting your local service station. Each time you remove the filler cap, fuel evaporates and is lost to the atmosphere.
Avoid prolonged idling
Modern vehicles are designed to operate efficiently from start-up and don’t need to be ‘warmed up’. If you stop for an extended period and can restart safely, consider turning off your engine.
Use high gears and cruise control
Use the highest gear, relative to the speed you are travelling, to save fuel and reduce wear. Cruise control (if fitted), helps maintain a constant speed and can reduce fuel consumption when used on long flat roads.
Read the road ahead
Avoid quick starts and aggressive driving. You’ll save fuel and avoid unnecessary wear and tear. It also helps if you accelerate smoothly, look well ahead and anticipate stops.
Clean out your vehicle and remove roof racks
Unnecessary weight burns fuel, so avoid carrying heavy items if you don’t need to. Things like roof racks and storage boxes create excessive drag and increase fuel consumption, so remove them if they’re not being used.
Avoid rush hour and combine trips
Where possible, avoid rush hour driving, as stop-and-go driving burns more fuel. Try to plan ahead and combine several trips into one.
Slow down
Fuel consumption increases by around six percent for every 10km/h faster you go over 90km/h. Besides being the open road’s speed limit, 100km/h is a good compromise between travel time and fuel economy for most drivers.

Shampoo and conditioner bars
The effort to reduce plastic waste has brought a wave of people “ditching the bottle”. Instead of buying shampoo and conditioner in plastic bottles, you can switch to a bar which is essentially like a bar of soap but for your hair. Ethique offer some excellent hair care products and ship them to you in sustainable packaging. You can also purchase some in your local supermarket.

Reusable razor
Disposable razors are another big contributor to plastic waste. Eco friendly, reusable razors are becoming more common place and with many companies offering free postage to return used blades and purchase new ones, it’s an excellent way to reduce your overall plastic waste. The metal handle can last a lifetime and the blades are extremely cheap. Cali offer a great blade return service. www.caliwoods.co.nz

cruise Time to
A cruise holiday combines relaxation with adventure, setting sail in style. Here’s everything you need to know to pick the perfect cruise for you.
In New Zealand, most cruise lines reach our shores during the summer cruise season, which runs from October to April. The lesser winter cruise season also runs from April to July.
With a cruise vacation, you unpack once yet experience several destinations. Around-the-world cruises, which can last for over half a year, visit New Zealand from all over the planet.
Some liners spend two weeks or more travelling the length of New Zealand, while others spend shorter periods visiting just one or two ports.
Brucey the Builder
Worldwide cruises are often sold in sections so that passengers can curate their ideal trip. Expedition cruises combine large port stops with niche locations, such as Antarctic voyages and Stewart Island stop-offs, giving travellers even more options.
Choosing a cruise is complicated, so do your research and consider consulting a travel agent for recommendations and potential deals before committing to a voyage.
You should go for the cruise that most specifically caters to your interests and needs. Some cruises are designed for older adults with a relaxed pace and activities you’ll enjoy.
Further, consider your health and mobility. Many ships can accommodate wheelchairs and dietary restrictions and have medical services available.
Choosing a cruise is complicated, so do your research and consider consulting a travel agent for recommendations and potential deals before committing to a voyage.
It’s also wise to get travel insurance to cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and specific health needs.
Many ships have social events and clubs for people of all ages, a great way to meet new people. There are cruises exclusively for every age bracket.
Many Kiwis fly to Australia or another departure point to access a wider variety of itineraries. Pre- or post-cruise land tours in Australia or the South Pacific can further enhance the travel experience.
Finally, don’t feel obligated to do everything. Let go of the stresses of planning as soon as you board. Relax, read a book, and enjoy the scenery; you’ll make the most of the vacation in your way.
Cruising is a great way to explore the world in comfort and style. Just ensure you plan carefully and choose the right cruise for an unforgettable experience!

Ensuring a smooth first-time selling experience
Article by Jen Baird, chief executive at REINZ.
Selling a first home can be an exciting yet daunting prospect with several factors to consider — and its normal to not be entirely sure about the process.
The best way to start is to get clear about what you want to achieve from your selling journey.
Understanding the ‘why’
Everyone’s circumstances are different — there are many reasons for selling a house, from family circumstances or lifestyle changes to downsizing or upsizing. You may need to move for a new job or want to live closer to your family. Or perhaps you are thinking about financial goals and would like to cash in your property and fund a new venture.
Figuring out your selling needs and goals will help form a better idea of the timeframe you’ll need to get your house market ready. Do you need extensive renovations or minor touch ups? A simple marketing campaign, or a more extensive one? Your why will also help your real estate profession deliver in a way that works for you.
What is your property worth?
A home is as much an emotional asset as it is a capital one, and it can be difficult to see it objectively, let alone put a price on it.
There are several ways to get a precise idea of your property’s market value. You can pay for a registered valuation or get a current market
appraisal from a licensed real estate agent. Free online tools can give you a rough estimate, largely based on clever calculations using recent sale comparisons.
It is vital you have in depth conversations with your real estate professional. Automated tools and valuations are a great starting point, but your agent will know what’s happening in the market right now, what is impacting market values and the best approach to take to get a sale.
Consider any changes you can make to increase your property’s value, such as landscaping or fixing a broken fence.
Look at your property through a critical eye. First impressions can make a big difference in real estate: from curb appeal through to repainting the walls, some cosmetic changes inside and out may go a long way to attracting buyers and increasing the sale price.
For more targeted renovations, kitchens and bathrooms are usually key rooms to focus on. Although the most expensive rooms to remodel, if you have the time and budget, a well-planned renovation tends to add the most value.
The magic of marketing
Marketing is fundamental to reaching and attracting buyers and making your property stand out from the rest. Experienced real estate agents know the impact continuous and omnichannel promotion can have on a property’s sale.
High-quality imagery and videos are more important than ever for online listings that enable potential buyers to get a feel for the property and decide whether they are interested in taking their buying journey to the next step.

Making a final farewell affordable
Funerals provide the opportunity to gather, remember and celebrate the life we've lost. But how we do that and how much it might cost are almost limitless.
If your budget is tight remember even a modest farewell can still convey your love and respect and provide you with the grief support you need. Here are some ways to reduce costs:
Cremation vs burial: Burials are typically more expensive unless you have access to an urupa or other private burial ground. Costs vary depending on what your local council charges – a burial plot may be as little as just over $1100 in Taupo to more than $6,000 - $8,000 in places like New Plymouth and Auckland.
Cremation costs including ash interment plots on the other hand will range from $600 - $1000. In addition, cremations require a cremation certificate that may cost another $120 - $200.
Casket choice: Some kind of casket or a shroud and board is required even for cremation so the person can be placed respectfully into the cremator.
The most elaborate caskets may cost $10,000 or more, but there are a range of options, including sustainable wood options in the $1,000 - $2,500 range. Some cities also offer coffin clubs where you can make your own casket.
Professional services fee: Some 99 percent of New Zealanders use a funeral director for at least the death registration process.

on the type of funeral you are having, and, to an extent, the part of the country you are in (funeral homes in expensive cities may cost more to run and part of the fee covers the cost of running the funeral home).
Typically, you might expect something in the region of $4,500 to $6,500. Some funeral directors offer funeral packages for very simple services that might have a reduced professional services component.
Other places to reduce costs
There are many other ways you can reduce costs to make a funeral more affordable. Consider these:
• Providing your own venue for the funeral or reception
• Choosing not to have a photo slide show or choosing not to live stream the service
• Limiting numbers at the reception to reduce catering costs. Or don’t have a reception at all. Instead, meet at a local café where those attending pay their own way, such as:
• A single rose or a spray from your garden on the casket rather than a florist’s cost
• A confident (and organised) family member or friend in place of a paid celebrant
• Placing funeral notices online rather than large newspaper notices.
Ask for an estimate upfront
In addition, a funeral director will attend to other paperwork, manage booking all the suppliers and venue for the funeral, arrange service sheets and photo slide shows, will transport your loved one from their place of death (a 24/7 service), will arrange viewings and much more.
The cost associated with this work will be captured in a ‘professional services fee’ which will vary significantly depending
Funeral Directors Association members commit to always offering an estimate before a funeral. This enables you to make choices that are right for you and your family – and your budget.

Crafting meaningful farewells
Ceremonies are an important part of our lives. Through the act of ceremony, we mark important rites of passage in life, such as coming of age, moving home, anniversaries, marriages, births and death.
No matter what nationally or faith, as a global society, we all have our own ceremonies, rites and rituals that we perform at the time of ones death.
A funeral service is a ceremony where we say goodbye to someone who has died, we also acknoledge, remember and celebrate their life. By gathering together and sharing stories, playing significant music, reading meaningful words, singing, looking at photos and videos and reminiscing about our time with a loved one when they were alive, we begin our healing process of mourning.
Their philosophy centres on the belief that every individual deserves a farewell that mirrors their life’s unique journey.
