With updates, new models, and brand-new tech innovations, keeping up with the rapidly evolving digital world can be challenging. Younger generations have grown up amidst the Internet and its impacts, but for adults, it might not come as naturally.
Several challenges emerge as technology continues to advance. Sure, these innovations are increasing the amount of data readily available to us. But the downside is that they impact our ability to stay connected, access services, and maintain a sense of identity and independence.
Some technologies are not designed with every generation in mind. Small fonts, complex interfaces, and a lack of clear instructions can make a website unusable. Vision impairment, arthritis, and memory issues can all create barriers to effective technology use.
One solution for this is creating more user-friendly and accessible technology. Strategies that digital creators can implement include simplified interfaces, consistent navigation and predictable web layouts.
Accessibility features are also slowly being embraced by Internet builders. Voice commands, screen readers, adjustable settings, tutorials and guides, and support services help everyone get what they desire out of the Internet. Naturally, users gravitate toward the friendliest websites. By continuing to use only the easy-to-use sites, the harder-to-use sites are forced to improve.
With Internet changes come new ways to scam and trick. Due to a lack of familiarity with cybersecurity practices, those without a second-nature understanding of technology can be more vulnerable to online scams, phishing attacks, and identity theft. It’s harder than ever to protect your personal information online.
Digital literacy training aims to remedy these challenges. The Dark Times Academy is one initiative that seeks to bring community education to critical digital topics. Recently launched in Auckland,
they offer a range of online courses that aim to help people become better at navigating the modern world.
“We’re aiming to make learning joyful again – something that, in our view, is much needed in these dark times that we are all living through,” says Mandy Henk, who is formerly the CEO of community education group Tohatoha Aotearoa Commons. The initiative was founded by Mandy and Byron Clark, one of the nation’s leading experts on far-right extremism.
“From understanding the role of AI in the real world and fighting disinformation to an updated take on critical literacy, our courses are scheduled to be accessible to working adults across New Zealand and a range of global time zones, including the US and Australia,” Mandy says.
The Digital Steps free, community-based digital literacy programme has a similar goal. Digital Steps runs in over 200 public libraries, community centres, and schools. For flexible and friendly training to build online skills, visit their website: steppingup.nz/ programmes/digital-steps
The Internet is meant to connect us, but it can also contribute to social isolation. If you’re unable to use technology effectively, it can have the reverse effect. These challenges can lead to increased dependence on family members, friends, or caregivers for help with technology. This can be incredibly frustrating! Understanding online privacy is essential to maximising your ability to use digital means to connect with your loved ones.
And it has to be mentioned that constantly updating with technology can be expensive. In this economy!? It’s more likely than you think. Software subscriptions, services, and new devices all have their price.
Planned obsolescence is a new phrase that refers to the practice of designing products with an artificially limited lifespan so that they become obsolete after a certain time. This can be done in many ways, from using cheap materials or making products difficult to repair to creating software updates that slow down devices over time.
Degrowth Aotearoa advocates for a transition to a less consumerist and more sustainable way of life. Opposing planned obsolescence is at the heart of their mission. Phones, batteries, and light bulbs are just some of the products that often fall victim to planned obsolescence. Printer ink cartridges, fast fashion and low-quality clothes, and new car models are also on the list.
Addressing planned obsolescence starts with education. Buy durable products from companies with strong reputations. Support businesses that offer repair services and make spare parts available. Make informed choices and help create a market for products designed to last.
We must also advocate for legislation. Per Degrowth Aotearoa, in 2015, France became the first country to ban planned obsolescence. The French law requires manufacturers to provide clear information about the lifespan of their products and to make spare parts available for a minimum of ten years. There have been calls for New Zealand to follow suit.

These challenges can lead to increased dependence on family members, friends, or caregivers for help with technology. This can be incredibly frustrating! Spring is in the air, and with it comes a renewed sense of energy and a desire to freshen up our living spaces.
While spring cleaning often conjures images of frantic scrubbing and decluttering, it's actually an opportunity to revitalise your home and prepare it for the months ahead.
Let's face it—winter can be tough on our homes. With leaves rotting in the gutter and extra foot traffic from muddy boots, it's no wonder our spaces can feel a little lacklustre when spring arrives.
We all have those dreaded chores that get pushed to the back burner. The grimy stovetop, the dust-coated light fixtures –they're staring us in the face, but we just can't seem to muster the motivation to tackle them. It's time to roll up your sleeves and give your home the attention it deserves.
Beyond the obvious deep cleaning, spring is also a great time to focus on home maintenance. A little preventative care now can save you from bigger problems later. From checking for drafts to ensuring your appliances are running smoothly, these tasks will not only protect your home but also enhance your comfort and enjoyment.
Let's start with the kitchen, the heart of the home. Those appliances that work tirelessly all year round deserve a little TLC. Imagine the satisfaction of sliding open your stove and revealing a sparkling clean surface. To achieve this, carefully unplug your stove and gently pull it forward. Armed with dishwashing soap, you can tackle the grime that often accumulates under and around the appliance. While you're at it, take a moment to inspect for any signs of pest activity.
Ovens can be a real challenge. Spills and splatters can turn into smoky nightmares if not addressed quickly. Here's a handy trick: sprinkle salt over the mess immediately. It works like magic to stop the smoking and makes clean-up a breeze once the oven has cooled down.
Microwaves are another kitchen culprit. Food splatters and grease can create a stubborn mess. To tackle this, fill a microwave-safe bowl with water and heat it on high for a few minutes. The steam will help loosen the grime, making it easier to wipe away.
Remember, spring cleaning is not just about achieving a spotless home; it's about creating a space that nourishes your well-being. So, roll up your sleeves, put on some music, and enjoy the process of transforming your house into a home that's ready to embrace spring.
Now, let's turn our attention to the bedroom. Our bedding takes a beating throughout the year, so it's important to refresh it regularly. Depending on the fabric, you can revitalise your comforters, pillowcases, and sheets with a hot wash using baking soda, white vinegar, and laundry detergent. Mattresses and pillows can also benefit from a good clean. Sprinkle baking soda on top, let it sit for a couple of hours, then vacuum it up to eliminate odours. For stubborn stains or lingering smells, consider using a steam cleaner. Just remember to let everything dry completely before making the bed.
Finally, let’s talk about windows. There's nothing quite like the feeling of fresh spring air and sunshine streaming through clean windows. Start by cleaning the window frames to remove dust and grime. Then, tackle the glass itself using a glass cleaner to achieve that sparkling finish.
Remember, spring cleaning is not just about achieving a spotless home; it's about creating a space that nourishes your well-being. So, roll up your sleeves, put on some music, and enjoy the process of transforming your house into a home that's ready to embrace spring.
As the golden years approach, many retirees think about downsizing as a strategic move to simplify their lives, reduce costs, and line up their living situation with their changing needs.
This decision can lead to a more fulfilling, manageable, and financially sustainable lifestyle.
One of the main advantages of downsizing is the financial freedom it offers. By moving to a smaller home or apartment, retirees can cut down on various costs such as utilities, maintenance and insurance. The savings gathered from these reduced expenses can be spent on enhancing the retirement lifestyle, whether it is through travel, exploring new hobbies, or boosting savings. This financial ease is a key component in ensuring a comfortable retirement.
Downsizing typically means a decrease in the effort required to maintain a home. Smaller spaces are easier to manage and clean, freeing up time and energy for activities that can add value to wellbeing. This is especially beneficial as retirees often seek to minimise physical strain and maximise enjoyment during their retirement years.
Choosing to downsize can also mean improved mobility and safety. Many retirees opt for homes that are more accessible, perhaps with fewer stairs and more convenient layouts, to accommodate health needs and ensure comfort. Plus, moving to a smaller home can mean the opportunity to relocate to a better location. Whether it’s closer to family and friends or finding a community with excellent amenities for seniors, downsizing can significantly enhance the quality of life in retirement.
Another significant benefit of downsizing is that it encourages decluttering. Letting go of possessions that are no longer needed or wanted can be liberating. It allows individuals to focus on the items that are truly meaningful or useful, building a sense of clarity and order in their environment. This decluttering process can lead to a more organised and peaceful home setting that can assist a stress-free lifestyle.
Many retirees choose to move into communities designed for older adults, where they can enjoy an active social life and engage in various community-driven activities.

Plus, moving to a smaller home can mean the opportunity to relocate to a better location. Whether it’s closer to family and friends or finding a community with excellent amenities for seniors, downsizing can significantly enhance the quality of life in retirement.
These communities often provide social interactions, health programs, and collective events that can be important for maintaining a vibrant social life. Engagements like this is crucial for emotional health and can help in building a supportive network of peers.
Downsizing also has a positive impact on the environment. Smaller living spaces consume less energy and resources, making it an ecofriendly choice that contributes to sustainability. This aspect often resonates with those who are conscious of their ecological footprint and want to leave a lighter mark on the planet.
Downsizing for retirement is more than just moving to a smaller space—it’s a thoughtful choice that supports a lifestyle change aimed at maximising personal freedom, health, and happiness. For many retirees, it represents a shift towards a simpler yet richer way of life that allows them to fully enjoy their later years.

We all know the feeling. You've been glued to your chair for hours, the computer screen a constant glow on your face.
Your legs feel stiff, your brain foggy, and a general sense of lethargy hangs over you. What's the cure? Sometimes, the simplest solution is the most effective: a walk.
Walking is an activity so ingrained in our human experience that it's easy to take it for granted. It's a low-impact exercise that requires no fancy equipment or gym memberships, just a good pair of shoes and a willingness to put one foot in front of the other.
Walking is a fantastic way to keep your body humming. Not only does regular walking strengthen your heart and lungs, but it also improves circulation, which delivers oxygen and nutrients throughout your body, keeping you energised.
Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, which can boost alertness and improve cognitive function. You might find yourself feeling sharper, more focused, and ready to tackle whatever the day throws your way.
At Waste Scape NZ, we specialize in house cleans, light commercial and residential cleaning, as well as final cleans. Our services cover everything from interior and exterior cleaning to waste pick-up, ensuring your space is spotless and well-maintained. With years of experience, we’re committed to delivering exceptional results and meeting the unique needs of every client. Trust us for reliable, professional cleaning services that keep your environment clean and sanitized.
Walking also helps to manage weight. Every step you take burns calories, and incorporating walks into your routine can contribute significantly to weight loss or maintenance. Plus, the muscle you build during walks helps your body burn calories, even at rest.
The benefits of walking extend far beyond the physical. Walking is a powerful tool for boosting your mental well-being. Feeling stressed or overwhelmed? A brisk walk can work wonders. Physical activity triggers the release of endorphins, those feel-good chemicals in your brain that have mood-lifting and stress-reducing properties.
Walking in nature adds another layer of benefit. Immersing yourself in the sights and sounds of the outdoors can be incredibly calming. Studies have shown that spending time in nature reduces stress levels, improves mood, and even boosts creativity. So, next time you head out for a walk, consider exploring a park, trail, or green space. Breathe in the fresh air, listen to the birdsong, and let nature work its magic.
Walking with friends or family is a fantastic way to socialise and connect. Sharing conversation while getting some exercise creates
a sense of connection and belonging. It can be a great way to catch up with loved ones, talk about your day, or simply enjoy some time together.
The beauty of walking is its accessibility. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or just starting, you can tailor your walks to your fitness level. Start with short walks and gradually increase the duration and intensity as you get stronger. Remember, it's all about finding a pace that feels comfortable and sustainable for you.
The key to reaping the benefits of walking is consistency. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity walking most days of the week. Break it down into smaller chunks if needed – three 10-minute walks can be just as effective as one long one. Find ways to incorporate walking into your daily routine. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park further away from your destination, or take a walking break during your lunch hour. Every step counts!
So, the next time you're feeling sluggish, stressed, or simply in need of a mood boost, lace up your shoes and head out for a walk. You might be surprised at how this simple activity can transform your physical and mental well-being.
Start on your knees:
Sit on your heels with your knees either together for a more intense stretch in the thighs or spread them slightly apart for a gentler stretch.
Lower your torso:
Bend forward, extending your arms in front of you or letting them rest alongside your body, palms facing up.
Rest your forehead on the ground:
Try to make your forehead touch the mat, deepening the stretch in your spine. If this is uncomfortable, you can also rest your forehead on a block or pillow.
Breathe deeply:
Stay in the pose for a few deep breaths, ideally for a minute or more, allowing your spine to lengthen and your hips to sink closer to your heels.
Release the pose:
To come out, gently use your hands to push yourself back up to a seated position on your heels.
Start in a standing position:
Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your arms at your sides.
Step back:
Step your left foot back about 3 to 4 feet, depending on your height. Angle your left foot at about a 45-degree angle.
Bend your front knee:
Align your right knee over your right ankle, bending the knee until the thigh is parallel to the ground. Keep your left leg straight and strong with your heel firmly planted on the mat.
Square your hips:
Turn your hips forward as if they are facing the front of your mat. This may require pulling the right hip back and the left hip forward.
Raise your arms:
Extend your arms above your head, palms facing each other or touching, and stretch upward while keeping your shoulders down, away from your ears.
Look up:
Optionally, tilt your head back slightly and look up towards your hands.
Hold and breathe:
Maintain this pose for several breaths, feeling the stretch and maintaining balance.
Release and repeat:
To release, lower your arms and step your left foot forward to meet your right. Repeat on the opposite side with the left leg forward and the right leg back.
Start on your hands and knees:
Position your knees directly below your hips and your hands slightly forward of your shoulders. Spread your palms, index fingers parallel or slightly turned out, and press firmly into the mat.
Lift your hips:
Exhale as you tuck your toes under, lift your knees off the floor, and lift your hips toward the ceiling. Your body should form an inverted "V" shape.
Straighten your legs:
Gradually straighten your legs, but do not lock your knees. Bring your body into the shape of an "A".
Ground your heels:
Attempt to lower your heels to the ground, though they do not need to touch the mat.
Align your head:
Keep your head between your arms, facing your knees, and your back straight.
Hold the pose:
Stay in this position for a few breaths, aiming for deep, steady breathing.
Release the pose:
To release, exhale as you gently lower your knees to the floor and transition back to a seated position.

Emotional intelligence is sometimes held up as the ‘x-factor’ in success, the special ingredient that defines the people who stand out in life. It’s what separates leaders from followers.
But is our level of emotional intelligence all mapped out for us when we’re born?
It is often said that we are born with our intelligence (IQ) level, and I’ve heard the same applies to emotional intelligence.
The good news for those of you who may be struggling with emotional intelligence is that, from my own observations and from the available evidence, the people who claim that it is inherited are wrong. Emotional intelligence can most definitely be learned!
Far from having a fixed emotional intelligence ‘quota’, EQ is something that you can work on, improve, and learn to be more adept at. In doing so, you can increase the likelihood of success in business, relationships, and life in general.
Your level of intelligence (IQ) changes little between the ages of 18 and 60. This is because it is mainly inherited, according to most insight on the matter, though childhood development and one’s environment are also thought to have some influence.
Emotional intelligence, on the other hand, is made up of a large set of skills that can be learnt and attributes that can be developed.
Any skill can be improved—from riding a bicycle to listening to people. This means that each of us can become more emotionally intelligent over time if we choose to. The key is that we must choose to change ourselves.
However, as you will see below, there is some complexity to this… it’s not as simple as it may seem at first.
Part of emotional intelligence is something we call personal agility.
This is the ability to anticipate and respond rapidly to changing conditions, take a proactive approach to change, and anticipate challenges and opportunities. It involves a willingness to rethink past assumptions and willingly adapt to change.
Choosing to become more emotionally intelligent requires some emotional intelligence in the first place – specifically in the area of being open and willing to change oneself!
One of the complexities of emotional intelligence is that there are so many attributes that contribute to it. In fact, it has been broken down into 26 separate attributes that span across self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationships.
Most of us will possess more of some of these attributes and less of the others. But it would seem that people with more personal agility, in particular, will be more likely to improve other aspects of their emotional intelligence than those who are less welcoming of change.
If you have a ‘stubborn’ personality that is set in its ways, the door to raising emotional intelligence through personal change may be less likely to open.
Anyone who is able to smile and stay calm in a crisis is doing a good job of modifying their behaviour and connecting the emotional brain with the rational brain.
People who are emotionally intelligent are able to strike a good balance between the emotional and rational parts of the brain. They have an element of control over this connection that those who struggle with EQ don’t have.
But neuroscience tells us that the brain is able to constantly develop, creating new neural pathways throughout our lives as we develop new skills, so the brain we have at 18 is not necessarily the same as the one we have at 60. When we take information in through our primary senses, it first passes through the limbic system of the brain. This is the more primitive part, where emotions are generated; this is why our first reaction is often an emotional (and potentially ill-judged) one. We have not yet subjected the information to the ‘filter’ of our rational mind.
The more emotionally intelligent people are able to create better control and communication between the brain's rational and emotional centres.
However, the neuroscience mentioned above means that we can all learn this skill, create new neural pathways between these centres, and improve communication and control. In other words, we can learn emotionally intelligent skills and turn them into habits through repetition.
While comments and conjectures on emotional intelligence have been widespread in the past two decades, studies are few and far between.
One study led by cognitive scientist Delphine Nelis and published in Personality and Individual Differences examined the effects of four emotional intelligence training sessions over a four-week period on 20 college students; this group was compared with another group of 20 who received no EQ training.
The group that received the training demonstrated a better ability to understand, analyse, express, and regulate their emotions and the feelings of others. These improvements were not only observable immediately after the training but also six months later. While the study group was very small and more research is required, it starts to back up what we have observed about the ability to learn emotional intelligence.
Improving your emotional intelligence has the power to improve outcomes in both your professional and personal life. It can lead to better results in academic and occupational pursuits, as well as help you control stress and improve relationships.
Retirement marks a momentous chapter in life, one rich with opportunities for personal growth, exploration, and self-reflection.
However, amidst these promising ventures, retirees must remain vigilant against the common pitfall of relinquishing their personal power. This phenomenon often manifests subtly through decreased decision-making roles or accepting societal stereotypes about aging. It’s time to reclaim your autonomy and continue to live a life marked by confidence and purpose.
First and foremost, understanding what it means to “give away your power” is important. It can look like hesitating to make financial decisions independently, overly depending on family members for social interactions, or not expressing personal wants and needs. When individuals stop advocating for themselves, they inadvertently let others dictate the course of their lives, which can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction and a lower sense of self-worth. To combat this, begin by setting clear boundaries. Retirement doesn’t mean you are no longer capable of making your own decisions. Whether it’s with family, friends or healthcare providers, communicate your preferences and stand firm. This practice not only reinforces your self-respect but also teaches others to value and understand your wishes.
Engaging in new or continued education plays an important role in maintaining your independence. Retirement is the perfect time to explore subjects you’ve always been interested in. Consider attending workshops, enrolling in courses at your local polytech or even joining online educational platforms. Education sharpens the mind, fosters a sense of accomplishment, and ensures you stay connected to evolving world trends and technologies.
Another fundamental aspect is staying socially active. Isolation can be a significant issue for retirees, which may lead to the gradual relinquishment of autonomy. Maintain your social networks by participating in community groups, volunteering, or travelling with peer groups. These activities not only enrich your social life but also boost your self-esteem and reinforce your role as an active, contributing member of society.
Financial independence is equally important. If you’re not already familiar with the details of your finances, now is the time to get informed. Work with financial advisors to understand your retirement funds, estate plans, and investment strategies. Knowledge is power, and understanding your financial situation is key to maintaining independence and making empowered decisions about your future. Finally, embrace technology. The digital world can significantly enhance your ability to stay informed, connected, and engaged. Whether it’s video chatting with grandchildren, managing investments online, or using health-monitoring apps, technology can empower you to maintain your independence and manage your life on your terms.
Retirement should be a time of empowerment and personal fulfilment, not detachment. By setting boundaries, pursuing continuous learning, staying socially active, managing your finances, and embracing technology, you can ensure that your retirement years are lived with ability and freedom. Remember, it’s not just about adding years to your life but adding life to your years.

Living Wills: A living will, also known as an advance directive, outlines the medical treatments you wish to receive or decline in advance. This document is beneficial if you are unable to make decisions about your medical care in the future due to physical or mental incapacity.
Powers of Attorney: Enduring power of attorney comes in two forms. When setting up an EPA, you can choose to appoint one individual with enduring power of attorney for both your personal care and property, or opt for two separate EPA attorneys.
Reverse Equity Mortgage: Reverse mortgages target older individuals who own their homes outright but have limited income. This type of mortgage allows you to borrow money for immediate use and repay it when you sell the property or pass away.
We take pride in nurturing enduring relationships with our clients and their families, striving to maintain our strong reputation. If you are considering reviewing your Family Trust, updating your Will, or creating a new legal document, we are here to assist you.
We have a group of skilled attorneys ready to support and guide you in various aspects of Elder Law.
This includes creating new Enduring Powers of Attorney, planning the distribution of your assets post your passing, or navigating the process of investing in a retirement community.

Retirement is often viewed as a time to slow down, smell the roses, and perhaps move to a tranquil countryside or a serene beach town.
However, an increasing number of retirees are opting for the vibrancy and convenience of city living. The appeal of urban environments for the aging population is multifaceted, offering plenty of benefits that cater to both practical needs and lifestyle preferences.
One of the biggest advantages of city living is the unmatched accessibility to essential services and amenities. Cities are designed with connectivity in mind, making sure that everything from healthcare facilities to grocery stores is within easy reach. Public transportation systems in cities are typically robust, offering buses, trains, Uber and taxis that make navigating the urban landscape simple and affordable. For retirees who may no longer drive, this ease of movement is super helpful.
Cities often feature walkable neighbourhoods, enabling residents to do their daily tasks on foot. This fosters a sense of independence, reducing reliance on others for errands and contributing to physical well-being through regular exercise. Imagine stepping out of your apartment and, within a short stroll, having access to your favourite coffee shop, a well-equipped gym, and even a beautiful park for morning walks. This level of convenience is the trademark of city living.
Cities often have community centres, clubs, and organisations that offer classes, workshops and social events tailored to older adults. These activities not only provide entertainment but also build social connections, combating the isolation that can sometimes accompany retirement
Access to quality healthcare is an important aspect for retirees, and cities excel in this area. Urban spaces are home to worldclass hospitals, clinics, and specialised medical centres that provide top-tier care. The proximity to healthcare professionals and facilities ensures prompt medical attention in emergencies and convenient access to routine check-ups and treatments. The peace of mind that comes with knowing that you are just minutes away from some of the best medical care available cannot be exaggerated.
City living offers retirees an endless number of cultural and recreational activities that cater to diverse interests. From museums and theatres to concerts and art galleries, urban environments provide a rich variety of cultural experiences. Retirees can indulge in lifelong passions, discover new hobbies, and stay mentally stimulated through continuous learning and engagement. Whether it’s attending a show or visiting an art exhibit, cities provide a cultural feast for the senses.
Cities often have community centres, clubs, and organisations that offer classes, workshops and social events tailored to older adults. These activities not only provide entertainment but also build social connections, combating the isolation that can sometimes accompany retirement
Cities are hubs of social activity, making it easier for retirees to build and maintain social connections. Urban areas offer numerous opportunities to meet new people and form friendships, whether through community groups, volunteer organisations, or simply engaging with neighbours. The diversity of city populations also exposes retirees to a variety of cultures and perspectives, enriching their social experiences. This dynamic environment can lead to a more fulfilling and socially active retirement, enhancing overall well-being.
Urban living provides retirees with a vast selection of dining and shopping options. Cities are renowned for their culinary diversity, offering everything from gourmet restaurants to cozy cafes and food markets. This variety allows retirees to explore new cuisines and enjoy dining experiences that suit their preferences and dietary needs. Whether you’re in the mood for a five-star meal or a comforting bowl of soup from a local eatery, the city has you covered.
Shopping in cities is equally diverse, with access to everything from boutique stores to large shopping centres. Whether it’s daily necessities or unique finds, urban environments ensure that retirees have plenty of choices at their fingertips. The convenience of having a grocery store, pharmacy, and specialty shops within walking distance makes daily life easier and more enjoyable.
For retirees looking to stay active and engaged, cities offer all kinds of volunteer and part-time work opportunities. Urban areas are home to numerous non-profit organisations, community groups, and businesses that welcome the experience and expertise of older adults. Volunteering provides a sense of purpose and satisfaction, while parttime work offers additional income and structure to daily life.
While cities may have a reputation for being less safe than rural areas, many urban neighbourhoods are designed with safety in mind. The density of city living means that help is often nearby in case of emergencies, providing peace of mind for retirees living alone.
Cities offer a range of support services for older adults, including senior centres, home care services, and community outreach programs. These resources ensure that retirees have access to the support they need to live comfortably and independently. The availability of these services allows you to age in place with confidence and peace of mind.
Urban living includes innovative housing solutions that cater to the needs of retirees. From age-restricted communities and senior living apartments to co-housing arrangements, cities offer a variety of living options that provide comfort, convenience, and community. Many of these housing solutions are designed with accessibility in mind, featuring amenities such as elevators, ramps, and on-site healthcare services. These thoughtful designs ensure that your living environment adapts to your changing needs.
The urban jungle, with its pulse of life, offers a unique blend of opportunities and conveniences that cater to the evolving needs and desires of retirees. As more individuals discover the myriad perks of city living, the narrative of retirement is being rewritten. The golden years, enriched by the vibrancy of urban life, promise a chapter of life that is not just lived but celebrated.
Remember that wide-eyed look your kid had when they first toddled around the house?

Now, they’re all grown up, with dreams (and maybe some student loan debt) as big as their future. Homeownership might seem like a distant dream for them, especially with the housing market getting more volatile every month.
The New Zealand property market can be a beast for first-time buyers, and the biggest roadblock for most young Kiwis is the deposit. Let’s face it, saving a 10 percent chunk of change with skyrocketing house prices feels like filling a bucket with a teaspoon. As a parent, you naturally want to help your child achieve their dream of homeownership, but it involves a careful juggle between supporting your child and protecting your own financial security. Here’s how you can help!
One option is to offer a financial gift towards their deposit. It could be a lump sum or smaller contributions spread out over time. This can significantly shrink the mountain they’re facing, bringing that dream home a whole lot closer. The beauty? It’s a gift, not a loan. They won’t be tied down by repayments, giving them more financial breathing room.
Now, before you start emptying your savings account, there are tax implications to consider. Depending on the size of the gift, there might be tax consequences for both you and your child. A quick chat with a financial advisor can clear things up and ensure everyone’s on the same page.
Another option is to use your existing home equity to help your child. Here’s how it works: you become a guarantor on their mortgage. This basically means you’re saying, “Hey, bank, if my child stumbles, I’ll step in and cover the repayments.” This can unlock a bigger loan or a lower interest rate for your child, opening doors to properties they might not have been able to afford otherwise.
For you, it’s a way to support your child’s dream while potentially benefiting from the property’s long-term value increase. But remember, being a guarantor is a big responsibility. If your child can’t make the repayments, it falls on you. So, have open and honest conversations about their finances and commitment before taking this leap.
Co-signing a mortgage is another option. This means you take out the mortgage together with your child. It’s a good choice if their income alone isn’t enough to qualify for a loan or a decent interest rate. The upside for your child? They get on the property ladder sooner and potentially secure a better rate. For you, it allows some control over the property and ensures the repayments are being made.
However, co-signing comes with significant risks. If your child defaults, both your credit scores take a hit. And if they can’t make repayments, you’re liable. Co-signing should only be considered if everyone involved is comfortable with the financial commitment and has a clear exit strategy in place.
Let’s talk about the informal “Bank of Mum and Dad.” This essentially means lending your child money directly to help with the purchase. There are a few things to consider here.
While a handshake might feel good, having a written agreement outlining the loan terms, interest rates (if any), and repayment schedule protects everyone involved.
Is this a true loan that needs to be repaid or a more flexible gift with less pressure? Discuss repayment timelines and interest rates openly to avoid misunderstandings down the road.
Make sure they understand the financial responsibility they’re taking on, and be clear about your own limitations.
No matter which approach you choose, talking things through openly and honestly is a must. Discuss your financial situation, their budget, and their long-term goals. Be upfront about your expectations and limitations.
Helping your child buy a home is a big financial decision. Don’t go it alone! Seek professional advice from a financial advisor or mortgage broker. They can explain your options, assess your child’s financial situation, and recommend the most suitable approach for your unique circumstances.

1. Review your budget, or if you don’t have one, develop one. Check out: www.sorted.org.nz.
2. Think twice about putting anything on credit.
3. Reduce your expenses.
Look at your budget and at ways to decrease your expenses and cut back on your spending.
4. Increase your income.
Can you work extra hours or get a part-time job to get through the tough times? Could you get a boarder or student to help with your expenses?
5. Raise some cash.
Go through your cupboards and use up food that you have been storing. What items do you no longer use that you can sell?
6. Put together a repayment plan in place to pay off any consumer debt you have.
Start with the smallest debts; pay the smallest off first, then use the leftover money to reduce the most expensive interestbearing debt. Of course, you still must maintain your regular monthly payments.
7. Make sure you have an emergency bank account for a rainy day.
You can do this by putting some of your pay away each week.
8. Have you got the correct insurance cover?
You may think you are adequately insured because you have house and contents insurance, but it may pay to check. Get a pen and paper, work through each room, and see how much it would cost to replace all these items. Then, review your insurance policies carefully. If you find reviewing your policies difficult, give us a call. We can help organise your policies free of charge.
9. Having trouble paying your mortgage?
10.
In this brutal landscape you cannot avoid your bank manager or primary funders; instead, you need to contact them immediately and explain your situation. Use the Budget Advisory services through the Citizens Advice Bureau, or see a financial adviser.
Review your goals and keep positive.
Remember that economic slowdowns and bad times do not last forever. There will always be good times after the bad times. Keep this in mind when you are making decisions. If you need to, ask for help before your situation gets too bad.
Bereaved families can save both money and hassle by using Kiwilaw’s online legal service to obtain the necessary High Court paperwork, rather than paying for a traditional law firm or visiting a lawyer’s office.
This paperwork, known as ‘probate’ or ‘letters of administration’, is required when someone dies with over $15,000 in the bank, KiwiSaver, life insurance, or other assets.
Cheryl Simes founded Kiwilaw’s online solution in 2018 to offer a nationwide service that is accurate, excellent, and affordable. With a lifelong interest in computers, law, and communication, and
extensive experience in the legal system, Cheryl believed legal fees could be more reasonable and transparent.
Most families can now get the required High Court approval for under $1000 (including the $260 High Court fee), or even less with a valid will, instead of paying $2000 or more. Kiwilaw’s online resources also allow families to decide whether to pay professionals for the remaining estate work or handle it themselves.
“Just because a lawyer holds the will, it doesn’t mean they hold the purse strings,” says Cheryl. “Check the fee before you agree.”

By Gillian Boyes, Funeral Directors Association CEO.
Shortly after I began in this role I spoke to my parents about their wishes for a funeral.
“I don’t want a fuss,” said my mum. “And it’s so expensive,” dad added.
It’s a common refrain and as a newcomer to the industry was one I was initially challenged to respond to. But over the last few months I’ve come to understand why some kind of farewell is essential to those of us left behind.
Some of the early healing can help when you’re preparing for a funeral
Going through old photos and reminiscing and sharing stories can be a powerful way to remember the significance of the life of your loved one. There will be laughter as well as tears and it can be an important bonding time for your family.
‘event’
The funeral ‘event’ can help you begin to acknowledge the reality that someone in your life has died. Grief is a biological reaction, and it can be externalised though the event –something that will help with your immediate and future mental wellbeing.
How many times have you sat through a funeral eulogy and realised you didn’t know a certain fact about someone? Sharing unique memories and stories helps provide support to all those who attend.
Many funeral homes now offer livestreaming of services reducing the cost and burden on physically attending.
Modern funerals are personalised and can encompass whatever a family needs to help them farewell their loved one in a meaningful way. Venues these days, for instance, range from churches and chapels to sports clubs, theatres, or the local club. And families are encouraged to add their own touches and tributes – both to save money but to also make it meaningful for them.
Finally, people often think they must ‘respect a person’s wishes’. But what about your own? You’re the one left behind so it’s important for you and your own wellbeing that you get that chance to say goodbye, and to have support around you.
If you genuinely fear disrespecting their wishes, have ‘that’ conversation. It doesn’t have to be morbid or difficult – after all you’ll be talking to the person you love most, and they’ll understand you will need help to carry on without them.
Luckily, my parents were already planning to use a Funeral Directors Association member so I don’t have to have that conversation. But with my new found knowledge I’ve also been able to talk to them about what I need from the funeral itself. And at least a little bit of fuss is what’s right for me.
Here to serve when you need us. Local. Historic. Commited.

Article by Jo Rae, head of Property Management at REINZ.
For many Kiwis, owning a rental property is a key investment, often a component of retirement savings plans that generates a steady and passive income. However, it does come with great responsibility.
As the Government introduces more regulations, adding to the list of landlords’ responsibilities, a reputable property management company can add great value to your rental investment and ensure that your tenants and property are handled reliably and fairly, in line with your obligations.
A property management company will help find ideal tenants for your property. This can be a complex job, particularly if you do not have extensive experience in the property management profession. Having a tenant-screening process that is compliant with the recently changed Privacy Act 2020, and facilitated by a property management professional, will enable you to find tenants who are reliable, longterm and with a mutually beneficial respect for the landlord and tenant relationship.
Property management companies oversee all legal aspects of maintaining a property and working with tenants. They are fully informed on the legal responsibilities and up to date with complex legislative changes — giving you one less thing to worry about.
They help manage risk by ensuring landlords do not accidentally get themselves into a difficult situation that may result in a Tenancy Tribunal hearing or financial penalties.
The new Healthy Homes Standards, which became law on 1 July 2019, can be a challenge for real estate investors, as landlords are responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of their rental properties to meet the standards.
While it ensures the landlords provide healthier and safer properties to tenants and have lower maintenance costs, it can be time-consuming for people with already busy lives — particularly for those living in different cities or regions than their investment property.
Property management companies have experience dealing with the various issues that can arise with maintenance and generally have trusted contacts for various service providers, such as plumbers, builders, and electricians.
They’ll also have access to comparative data about the market, ensuring that the rent a property investor is charging aligns with the market rate.
This will involve regular inspections and detailed documentation. A property management agency may also give you valuable feedback and suggestions on upgrades and modifications that tenants prefer, which benefit both parties.
An underrated benefit of using a property management company is the alleviation of stress. Being a landlord can be a full-time job.
By engaging someone to care of this for you, you’ll be free from after hours emergencies, following up rent payments, repairing any damages, paperwork, finding maintenance contractors and other tasks that require a lot of time and thought.
As you may not live where you invest, working with a property manager means that you will meet your obligations and rest assured that someone is undertaking regular inspections of your rental property and supporting your tenants as required.
With an expert tending to the day to day management of your investment property, you’ll win back some precious time.
It is clear that utilising the skills of a property management company is highly beneficial however, it is important to recognise that this will not remove all of your responsibilities.
As a landlord, you will need to manage and trust in your relationship with your property management company.
REINZ recommends doing your due diligence when choosing your property management company — have broad conversations, ask questions and seek legal advice to ensure you are choosing the right company for you, your wants and your needs.
Identifying and repairing any maintenance issues early on will avoid larger and more expensive problems. Experienced property managers will inform you that keeping on top of maintenance and repairs will increase the value of your property and often the length of tenancy.
Choosing a REINZ Property Management member is recommended as they are supported to excel in the profession, provide excellence in customer care, and uphold the best standards of practice.

By Jen Baird, chief executive of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ).
It’s been a market of supply outweighing demand for several months, but activity is expected to pick up.
Here’s what to think about as you look to list your property.
It is important to find a real estate professional who can deliver a standout marketing campaign, advise you on key steps for getting your property ready to list, and who will tell you what you need to know throughout the selling process.
Using a real estate salesperson can result in a more effective sale than selling privately. They will handle the details of the marketing and sales process, the cut and thrust of the negotiation or auction, and you can rest assured that you’re protected throughout the process by their expertise and requirements under the Real Estate Agents Act.
To find the right person for you, ask around; talk to family, friends and neighbours and see if they have any recommendations on real estate salespeople they have previously used and whom they had a good experience with.
It’s also fundamental to understand where the market is today before you head into the selling process. Doing some of your own research is vital, however, you can rely on your salesperson to bring expertise.
Salespeople have the time, access to the latest data and market information, and advise on exactly what is happening in your market for your type of property. Having honest conversations with your real estate salesperson will enable you to understand the current market and the best approach for selling your home.
A real estate professional will help to manage your price expectations with the latest statistics, their knowledge of the current market, the local area, what properties are attracting the most attention and why, the current levels of attendance at open homes, and more.
They should also explain what they will do behind the scenes to ensure the best possible outcome for you.
They can advise you on the best way to present your property for sale including aspects such as required maintenance, tidying up of gardens, decluttering, or home-staging.
With these factors come costs, and your real estate professional should ensure you are aware of the aspects you may need to invest in when selling
your home so there are no surprises, and so you can factor this into your budget.
Look for a salesperson who can demonstrate knowledge of your local area and community, ideally with a network of potential buyers, as this can help ensure your property is best positioned and marketed to the right people.
Make sure you understand what a salesperson’s commission fee is. While fees do vary by agency, our advice is that choosing a salesperson on commission alone could lead to losing a significant amount of money by achieving a lower price for the property.

My journey in real estate kicked off in Waiuku back in 1998, where I’ve facilitated countless property transactions, ranging from units to rural estates. After eight successful years as an agent, I took on the role of branch manager for Barfoot & Thompson Waiuku, leading a dynamic team for seven fulfilling years before returning to my true calling as a professional salesperson in real estate.
Born and raised in Waiuku, I’m deeply ingrained in the community and its people. My local roots give me invaluable insights into the area, including the Awhitu Peninsula, ensuring my clients get the inside scoop on the best spots. When I’m not at work, you’ll find me enjoying the tranquillity and variety of my 3000m2 garden on the town’s outskirts. It’s my sanctuary, where I cultivate a diverse array of trees and shrubs, embracing the semi-rural ambiance.
With a background in banking and customer service, I’ve always thrived on connecting with people and providing them with top-notch assistance. As a proud Franklin resident, it’s my pleasure to introduce others to this great area and all the community facilities and resources available. As a further service to the community I became a Justice of the Peace in 2017 and am proud of the role I perform.
Deborah exceeded our expectations! Her deep understanding of the market and personalised approach ensured we found our dream home quickly.

My focus is on nurturing strong relationships and exceeding client expectations. Ensuring that you find your perfect place in our vibrant community, regardless of your age or stage in life. Let’s embark on this journey together!

Throughout the entire process, she demonstrated an in-depth knowledge of the market and provided valuable insights and guidance at every stage of the selling process. Her expertise and experience were evident in her strategic approach to marketing our property, which ultimately led to a successful sale.
One of the things that impressed me most was her open and transparent communication style which helped to alleviate any stress or anxiety we may have had throughout the selling process. Not only did Hara excel in her professional duties, but she also demonstrated a genuine care and concern for our well-being. Hara the best agent by far, always smiling.
I first met Hara about four years ago, she was selling houses in Dannemora and her smile was so bright it made you feel welcome and put my mind at ease instantly. She was very caring and went out of her way to make you feel at ease as house buying or selling can be very stressful. She was always very professional, kept me up to date with the process and her excitement come Auction time was very heart warming. I would have no hesitation in recommending her to anyone that is buying or selling as she was the very best agent I have dealt with over the years. We wish her all the very best for the future.
I cannot recommend Hara Jeng more highly! She was INCREDIBLE selling my elderly Dad’s house. She worked tirelessly and got us a great price. She was kind and patient with my Dad too. She is a pocket rocket. She knows her stuff. She marketed it brilliantly with weekend (Sat/Sun) and weeknight twilight open homes, sorted legal documents, dealt efficiently with all the suppliers (arranged stagers and a great water blaster to spruce up the outside, etc). We will definitely use her when it comes time to sell again and will be telling everyone we know to get her to sell their place. Thank you Hara. You’re a treasure!
