The Tobie Norris The Lord Nelson The Prince Rupert The Periwig and Parade Smith’s of Bourne Jubilee Garage

Well what a month for the food industry finally people have realised that you can not buy a box of 100% beef burgers for £1 without there being some dodgy ingredient hidden in there. To be honest it doesn’t bother me about eating horse meat but just the thought of not knowing is a bit worrying. Let me just take this little moment to re assure you all, that all of our meat products are 100% exactly what we say they are and as most of our meat is either from our own farm or from our local meat supplier we know exactly what’s in our food. Phew!! Moving on to a brighter note - it’s nearly Easter which means (even though it’s ever so early) its nearly Spring and spring means lighter, brighter, warmer days which tends to bring us all out of hibernation and we can at least shed our fifth layer of jumper….. Hopefully!! I am going on the theory that normally (for the last 2 years) April and May have been our best summer months so in that case its nearly summer too hooray!! So to help you put the winter blues firmly behind you we have got masses going on in the next couple of months - A Hot-dog eating competition at The Jubilee, Irish Bands at both The Lord Nelson and Tobie Norris for St Patrick’s Day, Quiz nights, Tapas & Jazz and more live music than you could shake a fist at!! Also it’s The Prince Rupert’s third birthday so why not come down and help us celebrate with a pizza from just £3. Just for the boys TOP555 have written an article with loads of great pictures of fantastic cars and we have a new exciting wine that we have just started importing from South Africa definitely worth a try.

What’s Happening Across The Pubs

What’s Happening Across The Pubs We have lots in store for you over the next couple of months what with St Patricks Day and Easter all happening before the end of March this year. Many of our sites have a great line up of live music and great deals to tantalise all your senses whilst not breaking the bank!! John Lowe

Employee of the issue The Thurlby Group comprises of a huge number of people and sometimes it is difficult to recognise each and everyone of them but we are aware of all our staff's contributions and know that the organisation wouldn't be half as good without them. Therefore we have got together with Carlsberg to give one of our employees a well deserved thank you for all their hard work and continued support of the business. We will be giving each winner some Carlsberg goodies and a voucher for £50.00 to be used in any of our establishments. This month we have chosen John Lowe (Jonnie). Jonnie is a chef at The Tobie Norris, he has been a part of The Thurlby Group since leaving college and has grown with the business and adapted to our ever increasing demands and needs. He is organised and hard working – meaning that he is often dropped into different sites as and when we need him. He is also a popular and fun member of the team and well liked by our customers.

Dionysus – Mar-Apr 2013

Nick our executive chef has been working hard on his menus and will be introducing lots of new and exciting dishes throughout all our sites. Look out for tasty treats such as Beef Bourguignon Pie and don’t forget to take the kids over to The Jubilee where they can build their own burger!! Don’t worry though, I am sure he will be keeping some of your old favourites but having had a sneaky peek everything looks delicious so I‘m sure you wont be disappointed!!

What’s Happening Across The Pubs

It all began 6 years ago… The Tobie Norris

Some interesting figures for you:

The Tobie Norris celebrated it’s sixth birthday in December and is going from strength to strength. One of the few occasions that licensing and planning authorities came together for the good of the town allowing one of the oldest and most interesting buildings in Stamford to open for locals and tourists to enjoy!!

• We now employ 29 full-time and part-time staff • In a month on average we sell over: – 7,000 pints of beer – 2,500 meals – 700 bags of crisps, pork scratchings and/or nuts • And we pay SKDC £16,159.00 a year in business rates.

Michael says: “It seems to me now that many of the local objectors at the licensing and planning stage regularly use the pub - it’s a funny old life!!!” Pictured are some of the photos of when we first purchased the RAFA Club in 2006 compared with how you see it today. It just shows how Stamford has evolved since the likes of the closure of The O’Brians Arms, General Gordon and The Victoria!! We are always continually investing, as you can see in the blind arch room and we are looking forward to a small make over in the garden ready for the Spring. Why not come and celebrate St Patricks day with us on Saturday 16th March - we are having an Irish band - Mitchell, Stokes, Lynch and Mills, playing Traditional Irish Music and Sing Alongs From 8pm. In an effort to try and source new and exciting Real Ales, Will is going to do a focus week every couple of months on a different brewery. We are starting Monday 18th March with Oakham Ales, putting 10 of their beers on in a week. Ask one of the bar staff for more information. Also if you have a new brewery or beer you would like us to try get in touch with Will by emailing info@tobienorris.com

Cycling challenge to raise funds The incredible successes of the Team GB cyclists coupled with the historic success of Bradley Wiggins in the Tour de France have made cycling one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. This has inspired members of the Tobie Norris sponsored Uffington Cricket Club to embark on a mammoth challenge to raise money to build the club a new Pavilion. The Uffington Cricket Club Cycle Team plan to cycle around 550 miles in 5 days in May. The team will visit all 6 of the traditional Test Cricket Grounds along the way. Cycling Team Leader and Tobie Norris Landlord Will Fry told us "Uffington Cricket Club has gone from strength to strength over the last few years gaining two promotions in the last three years. But we are in desperate need of a new Pavilion. We are planning on restarting junior cricket at the club and to do that we will need to upgrade our facilities. We have been playing cricket in Uffington for well over 150 years and this generation of players want to leave their legacy on the club." Training is well underway for this fantastic challenge. Keep an eye out for updates and sponsorship opportunities, and other events as the club look to raise £15,000 to build a new Pavilion. Shortly they’ll be setting up a charity donation web page. However in the meantime you can take any donations to Will at The Tobie Norris

Getting to Know Your Landlord

QUICK FIRE FACTS Full Name: William Fry Favourite Drink: Tribute from St Austel / Bishop’s Farewell from Oakham Ales Favourite Pub: The Port Gaverne Hotel, Cornwall This issue we would like to introduce you to our landlord at The Tobie Norris, Will Fry I am sure most of you know him but for those that don’t here is a little insight into one of our best loved landlords. So those of you who know Will know that he has a wide and extensive range of hobbies and interests - this is probably what makes him such a great landlord. He always has a funny story or tale to tell and loves a good gossip. Will was born in Kingston Upon Thames and didn’t move to the Stamford area until he was 14, where he attended the boys school until 1990. He then embarked on a “Gap Yarr” - first working in a Marks & Spencers warehouse sorting bra’s to earn some pennies before heading off around the world - Including Australia, New Zealand, China and hiking through the Himalaya’s. After his year out Will went on to Lancaster University to study Geography, Rugby and Beer and not necessarily in that order!! Will did leave university with a very respectable 2:1 but when reminiscing on his University days is most proud of forming the Real Ale Society - which in his words meant lots of beer festivals, gigs and days out !! After completing University, Will remained in Lancaster and ran a pub for 6 months

Age: 41 Favourite Meal: Cheese Favourite Music: White boys with loud guitars Hobbies: Tigers (Rugby), Music, Cycling, Running, Skiing

with his good friend Matt Jackson. However when Matt was offered a pub in Shrewsbury Will decided to return to Stamford to work out what to do next. He began working at Barnsdale Lodge as Assistant Barman and then moved across to Greetham Valley Golf Club. However when his hours were cut, due to it being Winter and very few Golfers braving the elements - Will started looking for his next venture. This was in 1996 and Michael had just brought The Periwig - Michael asked Will to help him run the Periwig and Will readily accepted, staying here until April 2006!! After 10 years of later and later nights Will fancied a break and so took a 4 month sabbatical where he donned his lycra and cycled across France solo!! Upon his return he knew he no longer wanted to work in the “clubby” atmosphere of The Periwig but still wanted to be involved in the industry. Michael had just brought the RAFA club on St Paul’s Street with the view of changing it into The Tobie Norris and of course this would need a landlord - Will stepped into the role from the very beginning - helping make 100’s of cups of tea for the builders whilst it was transformed into the pub we have today. Will has many interests and hobbies and to be honest most go hand in hand with a pint afterwards. He is as an avid Tigers fan and has been since his first game with his

father at the age of 8. He has been a season ticket holder for 10 years and tries to go to most home games as well as one European trip a year. In the summer he plays cricket for Uffington cricket club where he describes his skills as: “Specialist tea eater and fielder!!!”. He is also a keen runner and has completed no less than 7 half marathons and the Dublin full marathon. As he crossed the finish line of the Dublin marathon he got down on bended knee and proposed to his wife, Rachel - thankfully she said yes!! Which was immediately printed in all the Irish press and even mentioned on the local news!! Last year Will completed the 3 peaks challenge in 24 hours and this year he is turning his attention back to cycling where with the boys from Uffington Cricket Club they are embarking on mammoth ride of 550 miles in 5 days in effort to raise funds for a new cricket club pavilion. One of Will’s passions is music and he has a very wide and varied collection (6x Chumbawamba albums no less) Last month he went down to London to see China Drum and still has the bruises to prove his moshing expertise. He tries to get to Rock City at least once a month but has switched his festival from Glastonbury to Latitude - Which he says: “Is more diverse, cleaner and easier being in Suffolk.” Will and Rachel have two Labradoodles called Fraggle and Sprocket whom he describes as “Over enthusiastic!” He wanted a pub dog that would sit by the fire but Fraggle and Sprocket had other ideas… So finally we come to the pro’s and con’s of being a landlord. “The pros, are the fabulous building, amazing staff that have grown with the pub and I also love the fact that we can sell Real Ale in a simple format making the pub really busy and fun.” In fairness he didn’t mention any con’s apart from the long, unsociable hours but luckily Rachel also works at odd times so it tends to work well. Feature | Our latest import – Ken Forrester’s “Petit” range of wines

Our latest import – Ken Forrester’s “Petit” range of wines from Stellenbosch South Africa At the heart of The Thurlby Group is the notion to provide our customers with products that are different and exciting. We pride ourselves in sourcing and implementing the best quality services and ingredients to ensure that all our customers are able to find something that will be of interest to them. This is especially noticeable in our wine lists – not only do we consult with our dear friend and Master Of Wine John Atkinson on all our wines, we are continually searching out and discovering new varieties from around the world to make our selection as broad as possible. As after all everyone has a differing taste and opinion when it comes to the great grape!! With this in mind on a recent trip to South Africa, Michael and I returned to a vineyard in the Stellenbosch area owned by and called Ken Forrester to sample his wines and look at incorporating them on to both our wine lists and our retail side (so you can enjoy a bottle in the comfort of your own home). This was Michael’s second trip to the vineyard, his first being with Ross, Nick and Will in 2011 - Hence why we have asked Ross to give his opinion of Ken’s wines in “the wine of the issue” section. It is not just the wine that attracts us but also the ethos of the estate. It is young, forward thinking and fresh -Producing great quality wines at very reasonable prices. The farming is in the hands of a small highly dedicated team. Like us Ken believes in building a workforce that want to be part of what you do. With this in mind they have a “Family Day” yearly where all employees are taken away on an all expenses day trip and waited on hand and foot by the management. Also they pay all their workers way above the miserly minimum wage (just £8.00 a day) realizing that it is impossible for anyone to survive on this - let alone a whole family. The farm is a fully functioning, working farm… they have 11 horses that they show, numerous rescue dogs, ducks which are there unique form of organic pesticides (they eat all the snails and sometimes the grapes!!) and their new addition Wagyu cows imported from Japan.

Ken Forrester

14

Dionysus – Mar-Apr 2013

The wines featured can be either purchased in our pubs for just £18.95 or taken out to enjoy at home for just £8.95 per bottle Ken Forrester's philosophy has always been to create a range of handcrafted, individually made wines that suitably compliment a wide variety of food styles. Currently they produce three Ken Forrester ranges however to begin with we are importing just The Petit Range. The "Petit" range is all negotiant fruit, specifically sourced to suit a fruit forward profile, to offer soft, market ready, instantly pleasing easy everyday drinking wines across three styles.

Across three styles – Chenin Blanc, Petit Pinotage, Petit Rose The Chenin Blanc is a youthful fresh wine with quince and pear drop flavours. Earlier picked freshness shows on the palate with crunchy green apple and grapefruit flavours. Good mouthfeel and appetisingly tangy finish. The Petit Pinotage is 100% pinotage harvested fully ripe at 25 degree balling blocks specifically selected for their fruity character. Cool fermented after a cold maceration on the skins and pressed off early, before the development of hard tannins. This cheerfully Petit Pinotage reflects the modern fruit driven wine style that is in huge demand today. The Petit Rose is a very elegant bright pink salmon rose that overwhelms the nose with aromas of freshly picked strawberries, rose petal and cherry flavours. It follows through on the palate with delicious ripe raspberries with a delicate finish.

History of the Vineyard The historic farm Scholtzenhof is one of the oldest wine farms in the Western Cape and was originally granted as Zandbergh in 1689. It is now home to Ken Forrester Wines which is situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, in the heart of South Africa’s most famous wine region Stellenbosch. In 1994 the first wines were produced under the Ken Forrester label, and soon the award-winning wines were at the forefront of the Chenin Blanc revival. The grapes are

sourced from vineyards – some of them more than 30 years old – in the cool Helderberg region of Stellenbosch.

So who is Ken Forrester – Mr Chenin Ken Forrester started a career in the Hotel industry with Southern Sun, in the early days of Sol Kerzner, way back in 1977, after a 3-year course in Hotel Management at the Johannesburg Hotel School. He then went on to specialize in the restaurant trade, buying a share in one of the busiest eateries of the day, Gatriles in the centre of Johannesburg, and from there a string of other restaurants and related activities culminating in being elected Chairman of the Federated Hospitality Association of SA (FEDHASA). Then in 1993 with a young family, he and his wife Teresa set their hearts on an historic vineyard in Stellenbosch. This beautiful farm, complete with historic Cape Dutch homestead built in 1694 had stood vacant and derelict when they bought it in a public auction in 1993. A massive renovation was undertaken, both in the vineyards (Ken) and the house (Teresa!). With most of the vineyard planted to Chenin Blanc it was decided to enlist the help of good friend and Top Winemaker, Martin Meinert, with the quest to produce Chenin Blanc that could rival any white wine in the world. That was 11 years ago, since then the wines have been poured at numerous grand events including the opening of The Scottish Parliament (Ken has been known to wear a tartan quilt – the Forrester’s have their origins in the Western Isles of Scotland !) as well as the 85th birthday of their own icon, ex President Mandela.

The wines have received massive international acclaim with literally hundreds of awards and accolades and the growth of the brand has been nothing short of meteoric, in just 10 short years. So now you’ve read all about Ken and his wines - all that’s left for you to do is go and try it for yourself at one of our pubs. Dionysus – Mar-Apr 2013

name? What’s in a

This issue we felt it should be the turn of The Prince Rupert – why did we change the name from The Woolpack and how on earth did we come to the name The Prince Rupert? Well, first things first when Michael brought “The Woolpack” on Stodman Street it had a pretty lively reputation and it was considered to be quite a rough drinking place. Therefore we felt that by changing the name we were highlighting our desire to change the style and offering of the pub and therefore hopefully change the clientele. Normally Michael stresses “I do not like to change a pubs name however as it had a fairly bad reputation I felt it necessary. The name Woolpack is also uninspiring even though it is a part of history.” We came to the name of The Prince Rupert after reading about the history of the town, the role it had to play in the English civil war and Prince Rupert‘s involvement. The building itself dates from 1452 and being between the Castle and the Governors House must have been at the centre of the action. Rupert was a nephew of Charles I and commanded the Royalist cavalry during the English Civil War. Rupert was born on 17 December 1619 in Prague. His full title was count palatine of the Rhine, duke of Bavaria but he was known as Prince Rupert of the Rhine. His father, the elector palatine, was briefly ruler of Bohemia, but in 1620 was forced to flee to the Netherlands, where Rupert spent his childhood. His mother was Charles I's sister Elizabeth. Rupert became a soldier and fought in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). This gave him useful military experience when, in 1642, he joined Charles I's army in the English Civil War. He was soon appointed to lead the royalist cavalry and fought in the first major battle of the war at Edgehill in October 1642. His cavalry charge completely routed the parliamentarians but he got carried away and pursued them too far from the battlefield, losing the chance to inflict a decisive defeat. Other military successes gave him a formidable reputation although his relationships with other Royalists commanders were poor. They 16

Dionysus – Mar-Apr 2013

thought him arrogant and he was impatient with what he saw as their lack of professionalism. In 1644, Rupert led the spectacular relief of the siege of Newark and York but then in July, he was defeated by a parliamentary army at Marston Moor, losing York and the north of England for the royalists. In June 1645, he took part in the Battle of Naseby at which the royalists were defeated. Rupert now advised Charles to seek a treaty with parliament, but the king believed he could still win. In September, Rupert surrendered Bristol to parliament. In response the king abruptly withdrew his commission. Rupert responded by making his way across Parliamentary held territory to the King at Newark with his brother, Prince Maurice and around a hundred men, fighting their way through smaller enemy units and evading larger ones. King Charles attempted to order Rupert to desist, fearing an armed coup, but Rupert arrived at the royal court anyway. After a difficult meeting, Rupert convinced the King to hold a court-martial over his conduct at Bristol, which exonerated him and Maurice. After a final argument over the fate of the governor of Newark, who had let Rupert into the royal court to begin with, Rupert resigned and left the service of King Charles, along with most of his best cavalry officers. Rupert left for exile in Holland and this was the last time they saw each other. In 1648, part of the English navy mutinied and sailed for Holland where, in January 1649, the Prince of Wales gave Rupert command. The naval campaign took Rupert's ships to Kinsale, then to Lisbon and in November 1650 to defeat by Commonwealth admiral Robert Blake off Carthagena in south east Spain. Rupert escaped and spent the next decade in the West Indies and then in Germany. After the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Rupert held a series of British naval commands, fighting in the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch Wars.

Prince Rupert was a charismatic leader who had an interesting personal life too Towards the end of his life Rupert fell in love with an attractive Drury Lane actress named Peg Hughes. Rupert became involved with her during the late 1660s, leaving his previous mistress, Frances Bard, although Hughes appears to have held out from reciprocating his attentions with the aim of negotiating a suitable settlement. Hughes rapidly received advancement through his patronage; she became a member of the King's Company by 1669, giving her status and immunity from arrest for debt, and was painted four times by Sir Peter Lely, the foremost court artist of the day. Despite being encouraged to do so, Rupert did not marry Hughes, but acknowledged their daughter, (later Howe), born in 1673. Hughes lived an expensive lifestyle during the 1670s, enjoying gambling and jewels; Rupert gave her at least £20,000 worth of jewellery during their relationship, including several items from the Palatinate royal collection. Margaret continued to act even after Ruperta's birth, returning to the stage in 1676 with the prestigious Duke's Company at the Dorset Garden Theatre, near the Strand in London. The next year Rupert established Hughes with a "grand building" worth £25,000 that he bought in Hammersmith from Sir Nicholas Crispe. Rupert seems to have rather enjoyed the family lifestyle, commenting that his young daughter "already rules the whole house and sometimes argues with her mother, which makes us all laugh." He died on 19 November 1682.

Life on The Farm Anyone facing long days at work this month should spare a thought for our shepherd, Robert, who is putting in 14 hour shifts to help deliver lambs. We are currently in the middle of lambing season with our 200plus sheep. Robert said: “It’s been going well and we’ve got a lot of healthy lambs. It’s a very intensive job because it runs 24 hours a day – they don’t just stop because it’s a Sunday.” Unlike most other farm animals, sheep are seasonal breeders and lamb in the spring months when the weather is warming and ample supplies of grass are available. Sheep can be housed for lambing however we let them out in a field close to the farmyard where the shepherd can keep an eye on them. Michael believes that if they are housed they become lazy and if the weather is bright they should be able to roam about freely in the field.

However this year has been marred with various issues Our trainee shepherd Sidney down to both delivering his first lamb of the year weather conditions and disease. One of Michael’s famous phrases is “Sheep want to die” and they often seem to live up to this fact - however this year is doubly hard with the threat of these 3 awful diseases.

Is disease an Issue for us? Cattle and sheep in the south, south west and east of England are currently at the highest risk of showing signs of the disease; at this time this would be manifest, particularly as birth of offspring with deformities or neurological signs. As of yet, as you can see from the pictures we have not experienced any problems with any of theses diseases but they do pose a very serious and real threat - we’ll keep you posted in the next issue of how we ended up at the end of lambing.

Common Diseases Twin Lamb Disease & Hypocalcaemia (Milk Fever) In this month in the run-up to the main bulk of lambing we see most of the problems associated with these two conditions. They are hard to tell apart and often a ewe with one condition will develop the other. Twin-lamb disease (pregnancy toxaemia) occurs in the last month of pregnancy. It affects thin ewes and, rarely, over-fat ewes. The underlying problem is a lack of food intake, particularly concentrate. Affected ewes won't eat and are often blind and trembling. If not treated, worsen over days and die. Hypocalcaemia normally occurs in late pregnancy but can occur just after lambing. This can affect ewes in any condition, often after a change of housing or feeding. Ewes are often lying unable to rise, with their heads down. If not treated they will worsen over hours and die.

Liver Fluke Liver fluke infestation (fasciolosis) has always been a

problem during the late autumn and winter in the wetter western areas of the UK. More recently, liver fluke has been reported increasingly in eastern areas of the country due to the introduction of infested sheep. Slaughterhouse liver condemnations indicate that fasciolosis is now widespread and increasing in frequency. Liver fluke in sheep is on the increase as the UK continues to experience warmer, wetter weather conditions. The liver fluke is a flatworm with a complex lifecycle which relies on moisture and warm temperatures for survival. As well as having a detrimental effect on performance, acute infestation can cause livestock deaths if the parasite is left to multiply unchecked. Sheep of all ages are equally susceptible, with the most acute forms of infestation observed during the autumn.

Schmallenberg Virus (SBV) Between August and October 2011, outbreaks of disease in adult cattle causing mild to moderate fever, reduced milk yield, loss of appetite, loss of body condition and diarrhoea were reported in both the Netherlands and Germany. Testing for common

causes proved negative. From December 2011, abortion and stillbirths associated with foetal abnormalities, affecting mainly sheep but also cattle and goats, were identified in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. A new virus was identified in November 2011 as the cause of both conditions. This was named 'Schmallenberg virus' (SBV) after the German town where the virus was first identified.

Disease in the UK: On January 23 SBV was reported on four sheep farms in Norfolk, Suffolk and East Sussex. In these initial cases, the disease was diagnosed following the testing of deformed lambs. Up to March 5 2012 Schmallenberg virus (SBV) infection has been identified on 121 farms. Eight of the positive cases have been diagnosed in cattle, 113 in sheep, and none to date in other species. Four new counties have reported disease: Devon, Dorset, Cambridgeshire and Somerset. So far, none of the affected farms have reported importing animals during 2011.

Meet the neighbour | TOP555 performance cars

‘Meet the neighbour’ In each and every town where we have a pub we feel very proud to contribute and be a part of the community. We are extremely lucky to have neighbours and businesses that are forward thinking and proactive and we like to try and build a relationship with all of these. With this in mind we thought we could introduce you to some of the exciting and different businesses that are literally on our doorstep. Highlighting that even in these austere times there are people/businesses striving to make a difference and offering people that little bit extra. With this in mind we asked Tim from TOP555 to be our first ‘Meet the neighbour’ which he readily agreed to do - so without further adieu over to Tim… TOP555 if you haven’t already heard of us is the country’s leading Luxury and Supercar showroom situated on the outskirts of the idyllic market town of Oakham in Rutland. TOP555 is also one of the largest companies of its type with 11,500 square feet of pure, unadulterated supercars on display in our showrooms for you to peruse. You will find everything in here from Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche to high specification Range Rovers and Rolls-Royce. It’s not unusual to see in excess of £2.5m worth of stock at any one time when you walk through our doors as we are serious

about what we do. To say that we are very proud and extremely fortunate to be a local business that is family owned and run is an understatement. The ‘Freimuth Family’ (my Father Tommy, brother Charles and myself Tim) along with our loyal sales and support staff are extremely passionate about the cars we deal with on a daily basis. All of our stock is hand-picked and must meet the highest standards for us to put our name to it. This is what has earnt us the reputation for supplying the most discerning clients with magnificently presented cars in a very warm and relaxed atmosphere. “What’s in the name, TOP555” I hear you ask? TOP555 is actually a registration plate which dates back to the mid-1950’s when my Grandfather (on my father’s side) owned a successful knitwear company in London named Toplet Knitwear Ltd. In 1956 My Grandfather purchased his first new Bentley, an ‘S’ Type from Jack Olding & Co. which is now known as Jack Barclay of Berkeley Square in Mayfair. In those days if you were fortunate you could choose the number plate of your choice within reason and as long as it was available, so naturally he chose ‘TOP’ (for Toplet) followed by his lucky number ‘5’ 3 times to make the plate symmetrical thus

20

Dionysus – Mar-Apr 2013

creating ‘TOP555’. The number plate through the years has been on numerous, Bentleys, Rolls-Royce, Range Rovers and so on. This plate was eventually passed down to my father Tommy in the 1980’s as my Grandfather retired. My Father has kept with family tradition and the number plate has been on numerous modern-day cars to include BMW Alpina’s, Porsche’s, Ferrari’s, Range Rovers and Bentley’s and still to this day my father has the number plate on his current car which I am sure if you are local to the Rutland area you will have seen My Father over some 20+ years built up a very successful business founding, manufacturing and supplying pipe freezing equipment to the plumbing industry. When he retired he could see the passion and enthusiasm both my brother Charles and I had for supercars. Charles had already worked for a Ferrari dealership for 3 years in sales until I eventually joined him for another 2 years after I left college and yes I started at the bottom cleaning the cars firstly as did my brother. This gave us a great insight into the luxury and supercar business, getting to know the cars inside out, quite literally, and also meeting the very particular demands and needs of clients . With my father’s expertise and business acumen and both mine and my

brothers’ knowledge, passion and desire for supercars we knew that as a family we could create something very special indeed. This was the start of the family business, “father and his two sons”. So, when thinking of a name to call our newly born company 13 years ago we were looking for a name that people would remember, something that was a little different, a break from the norm to the ‘forename followed by surname’ titles people gave their car showrooms which seemed very obvious to us and we believed we would be viewed as “just another car dealer”. So a totally original name and a ‘dealership with a difference - TOP555 was born!’ We are currently in our 13th year of business and in that time we have grown the company from what started out as a much smaller showroom in Melton Mowbray to where we are today and have seen the business go from strength to strength year on year. We owe this mainly to our extremely loyal team of staff, an extensive client base and repeat customers, some of whom we still sell cars to today that we did in our first year of business back in 2001. Our client base covers a very broad spectrum of people both nationally and internationally. Some of these people have such a strong passion for cars that it becomes one of life’s priorities to be able to afford that car of their dreams and they spend most of their disposable income on one. Drawing on an analogy you could say for some of our clients, our showroom is like a sweet shop. When you were a child and you would count all of the money in your piggy bank to see if you could afford that special sweet, our showroom is very similar…..but without the tears, most of the time anyway!

client base we deal with include very wellknown TV personalities, high profile professional sportsmen & women, leaders in industry, CEO’s and even politicians (no names mentioned I’m afraid) as well as many of our overseas clients. However, each client to us is an individual and we treat everybody with the same amount of respect because at the end of the day the money they are spending is all relative whether or not their decision to purchase has taken them 2 minutes or 2 weeks. They are all equally special to us. Within the marques we deal in, we cover the range of models from entry level right up to the latest, most sought after supercars from Italy, Germany and of course the UK. A small minority of these particular cars we sell for ‘Premiums’ which are prices over and above what the cars would cost to buy new from a main dealer. “How do you sell them for premiums and why would someone pay a premium?” you ask --- Well a simple supply and demand process there is a very high demand from certain clients for particular new model exotica but manufacturers keep the supply low to keep the interest levels high in their brand which ultimately leads to residual prices in the market staying high. So for instance, if you are looking at buying the latest Ferrari that has just been launched but the waiting list is 1, 2 or even 3 years long (not uncommon with this marque) and you

want one today, then the chances are that we will have already been in contact with and purchased one of these cars from a very good client who has already taken delivery of an early car. We purchase the car from our client and we then sell the car on the open-market. The benefit of coming to TOP555 is that you can drive away in that car on that day without having to be subject to lengthy waiting lists. This is a very important side to our business and we are one of only a few dealers in the country to have the capabilities and buying power to achieve this.,. Although this is only a small part of what we do, our day to day operations mainly comprise of buying and selling all of the wonderful cars you see in our showrooms which also feature on our website www.top555.co.uk so please take a look to see what we offer! We are also heavily involved in social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter (@TOP555Cars) both of which can be found on the homepage of our website so feel free to ‘Follow’ us for up to the minute news of what’s going on and new cars arriving! We hope to see you soon and would like to invite you to visit us, so that you can come and form your own opinion. We’re confident you’ll be very impressed with everything you experience and who knows you may not leave empty handed! The TOP555 Team

Then there are the clients that are fortunate enough in life to not even have to think about whether or not they can afford something. They can purchase their dream car when they want it. This kind of Dionysus – Mar-Apr 2013
