Watch the time... The Sapphire Series. The new `Sapphire Watch´ series from JACOB JENSEN™ is clearly not a simple article for every day use, but a pure stylish statement from the person who wears it. The three sapphire crystal glasses as well as the case and steel strap lead your thoughts in the direction of the processed surfaces of a jewel and the reflection of the light in different directions. The strap and lock are completely integrated with the watchcase. Furthermore, the ultra flat movement is a high quality Swiss movement. These characteristics combined with many unique details result in an enduringly modern watch.

MONEY MATTERS
The price is right? Jane Szita considers the value we attach to things that cost nothing ILLUSTRATIONS: JOSE LUIS GARCIA
“The best things in life are free, but you can keep ’em for the birds and bees.” So goes the oft-covered old Motown song. But how true is it? After all, we all love getting something for nothing. It’s an issue that marketers and economists have wondered about for years. Traditionally, economists have been sceptical of the power of the give-away, arguing that nothing is ever actually ‘free’ and that there’s always a cost to someone.

MONEY MATTERS
“People make financial decisions based not on rationality and unbridled self-interest, but on whim, habit and emotion”
More recently however, the field of behavioural economics has developed, as popularised by Duke University (USA) professor Dan Ariely in his book Predictably Irrational. Proponents of this new and increasingly popular field suggest that people make fi nancial decisions based not on rationality and unbridled self-interest (as traditional economists argue), but on whim, habit and emotion. According to Ariely, the word ‘free’ – or has he often puts it, ‘FREE!’– has the power to override our logical thought processes. Rather endearingly, he even confesses that a free offer (in this case, for oil changes) led him to buying an impractical $30,000 Audi sports car, instead of the people carrier he’d set out for: “I chose the wrong car because of an oil change worth $150,” he says penitently, but clearly awed by the power of the magic F-word.
“Free is a powerful force,” he concludes, and anyone who has ever been swayed by a ‘buy one, get one free’ offer into returning home with two products that they didn’t want in the first place will have to agree. Ariely has tested the psychology of give-aways with a Ar raft of practical experiments. One trial offered chocolates to students, who could chose between a c Lindt Truffle for 26 cents or a Hershey’s Kiss for one L cent. Sales were even, as 40% of the students bought a truffle and 40% opted for the Kiss, the rest declining to buy. But then came the interesting part: d both were reduced by a cent, making the Lindt truffle b 25 ccents and the Hershey’s Kiss free. “We observed that suddenly, 90% of participants opted for the free Kiss,” sudd states Ariely. The Th same phenomenon was seen when Amazon launched a ‘free shipping’ offer with the purchase of a launch second book. The offer resulted in a leap in sales everywhere b except France. Amazon marketers investigated and in the world exc offer in France had not actually been free, but for a discovered that the offe nominal charge. Minimal in fi nancial terms, the charge nevertheless prevented

the surge in sales seen elsewhere, lsewhere, which occurred only when the price became zero. But then, “Zero is not just another price price,”” as Ariely says says. “Zero is an emotional hot button – a source of irrational excitement.”
The word free doesn’t always generate positive emotions, however. Another series of studies, by Stanford University marketing professor Baba Shiv, suggests that we need to pay to really enjoy something. In wine-tasting experiments, he investigated the relationship between cost and quality. What he found was that higher priced wines gave drinkers more pleasure – as measured by activity in the medial orbitofrontal cortex of the brain. “There was of course a twist in the story,” adds Shiv. “Unknown to the test subjects, it was the same wine that was delivered across trials.” In similar tests, Shiv and his team have found that more expensive energy drinks really do give more energy (as measured by the ability to solve anagrams), while costlier painkillers actually relieve more pain. So why, when more expensive items give buyers more of a ‘reward’ do free offers remain so irresistible? “Our original thinking was that there is a linear relationship between price and the anticipated reward value,” Shiv explains. “As price increases, the anticipated reward value also increases. Given the recent research on zero costs, I have come to the conclusion that this relationship is not linear – that ‘free’ is also a reliable signal of the anticipated emotional reward value. In other words, when an item is labelled as being free, costs get removed from the equation, and the brain experiences an emotional response which in turn I would imagine will translate to greater actual pleasure.”
The free lunch Conventional wisdom tells us that ‘there’s no such thing as a free lunch’ meaning that any seemingly generous gesture carries with it some sort of hidden cost or obligation. When the ‘free lunch’ in question is literally a meal, then splitting the bill may be the obvious solution. However, Dan Ariely argues that taking turns to pay is better. That’s because when we pay any amount of money,
“Zero cost is an emotional hot button — a source of irrational excitement”
we feel a psychological ‘pain of paying’. That pain isn’t much affected by the actual amount of money we pay, however. So, if you
But free doesn’t always work. Take the case of violin virtuoso Joshua Bell,
lunch with three people,
recruited by the Washington Post (which later won a Pulitzer for the story) to play his $3.5 million Stradivarius in a metro station in Washington DC. He busked for 45 minutes, during which time virtually no one stopped to listen, and the money thrown into his hat totalled less than $30. At the time, he could command $1,000 a minute for live performances. According to a curator at the National Gallery in Washington, who was asked to comment on what happened, it all came down to context. Bell busking in the station was like putting a masterpiece on a restaurant wall. Without having bought a $100 ticket to hear Bell play, most people just couldn’t appreciate what they were getting.

Every year
on the first of November, something miraculous happens in the state of Michoacán in central Mexico. From the north, travelling in over mountains and lakes and vast tracts of desert, come a quarter of a billion butterflies. In pulses of palpitating orange, the migration flutters down between the great ranges of the Sierra Madre Occidental and Oriental, heading for a small region of high-altitude forest on Michoacán’s eastern border. These are Monarch butterflies and their appearance here, at the same time every year, is one of the most astonishing occurrences in the natural world. “You can’t even dream it until you’ve seen it with your own eyes,” says Pablo Span, owner of Rancho San Cayetano, a hacienda-style inn near the town of Zitacuaro and a favourite with Monarch butterfly spotters. “We get some guests so moved they tell us ‘I saw God’.” The Monarchs come here to spend the winter, escaping the cold of Canada and the northern US to hibernate in this ancient oak and pine forest. They form around a dozen colonies with up to 20 million butterflies in each, roosting in the tall, indigenous oyamel trees, where the weight of the insects, densely huddled together to conserve body heat, can break the branches. Their arrival, in swarms of luminescent life, coincides with celebrations for Mexico’s legendary Day of the Dead.

corn-pith figures in tiny wooden coffins. On the nearby lake, fishermen are working overtime, casting for pescado blanco with their distinctive nets shaped like butterfly wings. Tourists, too, are descending on Michoacán, the ‘Land of the Fishermen’, in their thousands. The Tarascans – or Purepecha, as they call themselves – are famous for their ‘Noche de los Muertos’ rooted in an ancient pre-Columbian cult of the dead. In the cemeteries around Patzcuaro and on the islands of the lake itself, they hold graveside vigils, enticing the souls of their loved ones back to earth with the scent of wild marigolds and bowls of smoking incense made from the resin of the oyamel tree. As night descends, the celebrants light a pathway for the spirits with candles, laying

tablecloths over their graves and d ffêting them with a feast of their favourite food and drink. In the days before the Spanish Conquest, when the Kingdom of Michoacán covered a few hundred square kilometres, the Purepecha celebration for the dead lasted for two months. When Franciscan missionaries began mass conversions of the Purepecha in the 16th century, however, they absorbed the ‘pagan’ festival into the Christian calendar, squeezing two months into the two days of All Saints and All Souls. The timing brought the two beliefs together in a way the Christians could never have envisaged. The Catholic ‘Day of All Saints’, known in Mexico as the ‘Dia de los Inocentes’, honouring those who had led a blameless life or who had died as children, fell on November 1 – the day the Monarchs reappeared

“I never tire of seeing people’s expressions when they come here. It’s like watching the sun” every year in Michoacán. It was a day the Purepecha had always considered sacred, believing the butterflies to be the souls of their departed children returning home.
Luis Miguel Lopez Alanis, a tour guide from Michoacán, was born in a village close to the forest that is now designated the Monarch Butterfly Reserve. “Every time I come to the forest to see the Monarchs, my spirit sings,” he says. “It fills me with hope. Suddenly you feel anything is possible.” He brings tourists here almost every week in the
winter season. “People come from all over the world to see them. Even if they’ve read about it, or seen it on TV, they’re amazed by the real thing.” In their densely packed colonies, the insects, with their wings clamped tightly together, blanket the trees in a thick fur of charcoal grey. Around mid-morning, when the winter sun begins to penetrate the branches, the butterflies open their wings and the trees suddenly burst into blossom. result of the lengthening of the North American continent over this time. They travel at around 10 kph, but can cover over 300 kilometres in a day with prevailing winds. Monarchs begin mating in February, towards the end of hibernation, but only the females ever leave Michoacán. The males die after mating, and their bodies litter the forest
of leaves in an autumn wind. Their wings, fluttering together, make an almost imperceptible rustle – scientists call it a ‘susurrus’ – like a distant waterfall or falling snow. As the Monarchs swirl through clearings, pouring down the mountain paths in search of their daily moisture, visitors are enveloped in a kaleidoscope of orange. Sometimes the butterflies, seeking body warmth, will settle on people’s clothes, dressing them in a fabulous fabric of living gossamer, adorning their fingers with extravagant but weightless rings.

“That’s how they make you feel – like dancing. I never tire of seeing people’s expressions when they come here. It’s like watching the sun come out on their faces.” Until recently, no one knew where the butterflies came from. But by March 21, the spring equinox – another sacred day for the Purepecha – they all disappear again, flooding the streets of nearby villages in a final goodbye before heading north. An extensive tagging programme in the 1970s finally solved the riddle but its findings were startling. The Monarchs come from the furthest reaches of North America, some from as far north as the Great Lakes in Canada – over 4,500 kilometres away. They endure two months of starvation and exhaustion, negotiating highways and cities, mountains, rivers and deserts, battling rain and wind and blazing heat. How and why they do this, however, remains one of nature’s most enduring and wonderful mysteries.

It is the fourth generation that makes the epic journey back to Mexico, somehow doubling its natural lifespan to eight months – making it the longest living butterfly in the world – in order to make the journey in one go, flying back to a place that only its great-grandparents have ever been. The distance – around 5,000 kilometres – is about the equivalent of a human making two return journeys to the sun.

Cashing in the clicks The Internet has revolutionised business. So why do so many firms struggle to make money from it? ILLUSTRATIONS: RHONALD BLOMMESTIJN
The Internet has spoiled us. From carefully crafted albums to roughly shot footage of cats falling over, whatever we fi nd online, we expect to get for free. It is not a model that business has adapted to well. Jeff Zucker, the president and CEO of US TV station NBC Universal, famously summed up the concern of companies about how to manage the Internet by saying, “we’ve traded analogue dollars for digital pennies”. Traditional media organisations like his have suffered more than most, and Zucker recently updated his Zeitgeist-capturing quote to say, “we’re up to dimes”, but his worries will be familiar to businesses everywhere. The Internet allows fi rms to reach more potential customers than ever before. It just can’t make those customers spend. Social media site Facebook is valued in billions of dollars, but had more than 300 million users and an entry in the Oxford English Dictionary before it turned a profit. “There are a lot of things for which consumers do not expect to pay,” says Ken Homa, a
professor at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Most of those things are online. The Internet has led many of us to expect to get our TV, music, news and networking for nothing. But these sites are expensive to run, and their owners are not charities.
“The idea that nobody will pay for content online is nonsense,” says Michael Nutley, editor-in-chief of New Media Age. “But to persuade them to pay, you have to offer something that they can’t get anywhere else.” Finding that something is the tricky part. In 2009, Rupert Murdoch, the founder of News Corp, the world’s second-largest media organisation, announced that he would begin charging for online content. News Corp had just reported a loss of $3.4 billion in the 12 months to June 2009. Many felt it was a sudden reaction, reasoning that if the News Corp websites of The Times or The Sun newspapers began charging, readers would simply opt for one of the six daily British national newspaper
websites that were free; something that would be repeated for News Corp titles from Pittsburgh to Papua New Guinea. “This is a vexed issue for media owners,” says Nutley. “It’s very difficult to charge people when you’ve been giving them something for free, so fi rms are having to do more work behind the ‘paywall’.” One area that is having some success is very specialist
“Business has traded analogue dollars for digital pennies” sites that offer information which isn’t available elsewhere. Nutley suggests the UK’s Financial Times website as an example of a subscription model that appears to be working, and perhaps information with a solid fi nancial value will always sell. TECH BUSINESS
“Facebook acebook had 300 million users and a dictionary entry before it turned a profit” In 2009, micropayments were often hailed as the future of e-commerce by those hoping to fi nd ways of making money online. The concept is simple – through a micropayment website, users buy access to individual items – an article for $0.25, a news item for $0.05. But these fail to address basic issues according to Clay Shirky, one of the most prescient and respected writers on matters related to the Internet. Writing about micropayment site BitPass in 2003, he said, “BitPass will fail, as FirstVirtual, Cybercoin, Millicent, Digicash, Internet Dollar, Pay2See. These systems didn’t fail because of poor implementation; they failed because the trend towards freely offered content is an epochal change, to which micropayments are a pointless response.” BitPass closed in 2007.
FREEMIUM – basic services are free, but users pay for ‘premium’ content. See: LinkedIn
AFFILIATED – your site drives traffic to a site that sells a product or service. See: any price comparison site
SUBSCRIPTION – users pay a monthly fee to access the site. See: Netflix and other legal TV download sites
VIRTUAL GOODS – users buy virtual goods, such as points for Second Life or roleplaying games.
But as Google has proved, with a 2009 net income of $6.52 billion, there is money to be made when giving your product away. But it wasn’t always so, as Nutley points out, and Google, “retro-fitted this way of making money” on its free search engine by selling adverts. Others have done the same, as Facebook and YouTube use free services to build huge audiences in

the hope of future revenues from advertisers. They are not in Google’s realms yet. And as Nutley points out, “the fact that online advertising is seen as a distraction is writ large for them. They have tried this traditional method and it’s hard for them to make it work.” If it takes Facebook 300 million users to make money, what hope is there for the start-up entrepreneur?
The answer may be ‘freemium’. Here, a fi rm gives away enough of its product to make it popular, or even better, vital, and charges for the rest. Consider Adobe, which gives away its Adobe Reader, without which its PDF software could never have taken off. But in many cases, firms have to give away the best of their product – be it social networking, music or headline information – to generate interest, leaving the second-rate stuff at a premium rate. Ultimately, this is a conundrum that business must solve as more industries move online. Because, in the words of Chris Anderson, the author, and editor-in-chief of Wired, “every industry that becomes digital eventually becomes free.”

As Belgian holidaymakers Joseph Dunn and Caroline Schwartz amble up the sun-dappled path to their retreat in rural Italy, they find their stresses and strains dissolve into the Tuscan sunset. While most would expect to pay through the nose for such a holiday spot, this Brussels-based duo hasn’t paid a dime. “We got into house swapping a few years ago and haven’t really looked back,” says Caroline, explaining that both she and Joseph were introduced to the concept through the romantic comedy The Holiday. The plot is simple: Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet swap homes, have a great time and fall in love with Jude Law and Jack Black respectively. While a home

exchange doesn’t necessarily come with an A-lister on tap, there are huge financial benefits to swapping your bricks and mortar with a complete stranger’s.
“The state of the economy is definitely swelling our numbers,” says President of HomeExchange.com, Ed Kushins. “Other than getting there, it doesn’t cost any more than staying home. You can shop in a local market, eat at home and have fun doing it all.” While Kushins estimates his listings have increased 20-35% compared to the same month last year and his website currently gets up to 1,000 new posts each month, home exchange is still a small part
of the travel market, according to Michael Oshins, professor of hospitality administration at Boston University. “The concept is never going to challenge the hotel sector, but it is definitely carving a strong niche for itself and offers a good option for those on a budget.”
But you can’t escape the fact that you are allowing a complete stranger to sleep in your bed, eat from your fridge and generally make themselves at home in your abode. “First-timers are extremely concerned about security, but the risks are virtually nil,” says Dan Rubin, President of the International Home Exchange Network. “If you are worried, the key

Swedish wife Anja first swapped in 1983, exchanging their humble two-bedroom flat in central Stockholm for a similarsized Upper West Side apartment in Manhattan, New York. Not only did the couple get an enviable location (close to Central Park) for free, they also got Marnie Pasqual, the owner, a bombastic French-American script writer, who met them for coffee and a doughnut at JFK Airport on arrival. “You really immerse yourself in the place you are staying with a house swap – far more than when you are staying at a soulless hotel,” says Anja, who has visited Marnie’s pad several times since. “I don’t even bother bringing a travel guide anymore because Marnie usually leaves a list of cool things to do on the kitchen table.”

globe. But those in a more remote part of the world, or with a slightly dishevelled abode, may feel the need to up-sell, but Kushins stresses that ‘honesty is the best policy’ to save disappointment.
“If you are uptight about your home, then you should steer clear of home exchange at all costs,” says Oshins. “You have to accept that someone might spill cola on your favourite chair.” But because both parties are equally vulnerable, there generally remains a large amount of trust on either side. Egyptian Jahid Al Shammin and his family exchanged their four-bedroom home in Cairo for a beach-side villa in Dubai and experienced a number of technical issues with the car that came with the house. “I simply phoned up the family and the Pakistani owner just said, ‘use the Audi TT in the other garage’.” One by-product of the rise in home exchange is specialist sites, such as www. gayhomeexchange.com. It promises “an insider’s knowledge of the local scene.” Meanwhile www.sabbaticalhomes.com offers long-term properties to academics. But for anyone wondering whether to dip their toe in the water, it’s a case of deciding whether you are the type to have a fit if a stranger breaks your favourite mug. “It’s a bit like bungee jumping,” says Anja. “You are scared at first, but the rope never breaks, and once you’ve done it, you just want to do it again.”

On the run
Parkour, or free running, is a contemporary urban sport all about the art of moving efficiently (and often fearlessly) to overcome any obstacles. The word parkour comes from the French parcours du combattant, meaning ‘course of the fighter’, referring to military assault courses. FREE Holland Herald

A life without money Mark Boyle hasn’t spent a cent in over a year. How does he do it? And why? He talks Annemarie Hoeve through his existence in south-west England
“I wake up
at five o’clock in the morning and make a cup of tea on my rocket stove, built from old cans. For tea, in early spring, I use nettles or cleavers − you know, the things that stick to your jumper. My toilet is a hole that I dig in the ground and cover up with soil afterwards. To wash, I’ll either go to the river or wait until evening and use the solar shower. It heats up during the day. I live in a caravan off-grid so I have solar panels. When there’s not much sunshine, I just don’t use as much energy. My laptop is solarpowered and I pick up wireless Internet from the farm where my caravan is parked. I only use the Internet to communicate what I’m doing and for my website. It’s not like it’s necessary for survival.

•60_Mark Boyle.indd 60
Most of the time when I go looking in skips, I don’t take any food anymore, because I grow my own. My caravan is on a south-facing slope so it’s a perfect location. It’s all rolling hills; typical British countryside, just outside of Bristol. I can grow carrots, potatoes, parsnips, kale, everything really. I also forage for food from the wild. I’ll go to the woods, bushes and hedgerows where there are lots of nuts, berries and mushrooms, depending on the season. I only use mushrooms I’m sure about because you have to be careful. I’ll also barter for things like grain, which I can’t grow myself. It’s a great deal for people, because I’ll work a whole day for what to them is only worth maybe £10 or £15 (€11-17). I’ve never gone hungry yet and have to give away most of my food. I’m also fitter than I’ve ever been and haven’t been sick in 14 months; not even a cold. In the summer I’ll go camping, sit around a campfire, go to the beach, go walking or cycling – everything that you can do for free. In winter, I’ll hang out with friends or read a book. People get hung up

INTERVIEW
“I also forage for food from the wild” on the fact that you can’t go to the pub or cinema, but they’re the only two things you really can’t do. I miss going for the odd pint, but that’s all. I organise film nights as a kind of alternative cinema, with free films from the Internet. Actually, living off the grid, I have way more friends than I ever had.
The hardest thing is that everything takes much longer, because I don’t have the conveniences that most people have. I have to find and chop my own wood or go to the city for broken vegetable boxes. I get around by bike and cycling to Bristol takes me an hour and a half each way. I cycle around 100 miles (160 kilometres) a week. To wash my clothes I have to boil up nuts to make detergent, then wash the clothes in cold water, hand-wring them and leave them out to dry. I’m living the fast life and the slow life at the same time. I work from early morning to late at night doing interviews and writing a book, but I also have to spend a normal working day just looking after my own needs: growing food and
getting wood. At the end of the day, I lie back, read a book by candlelight and listen to the sound of the owls. People are interested in my lifestyle but can’t imagine doing it. They think it’s all hard work, but I don’t see it as work, even en though on a human level it’s quite demanding. What you do is what you should love doing. I don’t want to do something just because I have to earn a certain amount to pay the bills.
There’s nothing I need money for. Obviously you need it for an iPod or things like that, but I don’t want an iPod. There is nothing I need that I can’t get. Also, you don’t need special skills to live like this. If I can do it, anyone can. To be honest, I think most people could do a much better job than me. It depends on what you want to spend your life doing. Do you want to spend it watching reality TV or do you want to live life in reality? People think it’s more special than it really is, but it’s quite a normal life once you get your head around it. I just don’t use any money.”
Read all about it Mark Boyle is the founder of the Freeconomy Community (www.justfortheloveofit.org). The Moneyless Man, his account of a year living without money, is published by Oneworld and is out in June. And, no, he is not keeping any of the proceeds. They are all going to a special trust fund for the Freeconomy Community.

ight from the start in 1988, our whale safaris have involved research, learning and adventure joined together in one single, integrated unit. The idea has attracted considerable attention both at home and abroad. The guides are scientists and students from many different countries. In such way, every outing has the feel of a special research project.

It is only a one hour voyage from Andenes to the feeding grounds of the great sperm whales. They are found in a specially nutrient-rich area northwest of Andenes. There are no other places in Norway where the edge of the continental shelf lies so close to the shore as it does near Andenes. This means – more time for whale watching!
The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS), has specialized in publishing reviews of this type of tourism all over the world gave us the following commendation:
«The world’s largest, most successful Arctic whale watching operation is Hvalsafari AS (Whalesafari Ltd.) in Andenes.»

KLM NEWS “New destinations and delicious food”
Hangzhou: a first for KLM! Starting on May 8, KLM will launch a scheduled service between Amsterdam and Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport, China, the first airline to offer direct flights between Hangzhou and Europe. Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, is a major residential and business metropolis, situated in the Yangtze River delta, on China’s east coast. Ranked by Forbes magazine as the ‘best city in China for business’, its booming economy has shown consistent growth since the early
1990s, with over 700 foreign-invested enterprises currently established within the city’s precincts. Via Hangzhou, passengers can catch connecting flights to other destinations within China. Together with its partner, China Southern Airlines, KLM offers services to Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hong Kong and now Hangzhou. KLM will operate three weekly flights from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Hangzhou, using Boeing 777-200 equipment.

KLM now operates a code-sharing agreement with Estonian Air on the route Amsterdam-Vilnius. There are six flights a week to and from the Lithuanian capital city, using Boeing 737 aircraft. Flying Blue members, who have booked KLM code-share tickets, will earn Level and Award miles on codeshared flights between Amsterdam and Vilnius.
KLM kicks off the FIFA World Cup in grand style with themed catering for World Business Class (WBC) in May and June. White, red and dessert wines have been specially selected from countries participating in the championships, including USA, South Africa, Germany, Argentina, Spain, Italy, Chile and France. A delicious menu has also been specially prepared by Margot Janse, executive chef of Le Quartier Français in the Franschhoek Valley, South Africa’s ‘gourmet capital’.
It’s become even easier to rebook your ticket! If you haven’t yet checked in, you can go to www.klm.com and click on ‘Manage My Booking’– even if you booked your flight via a travel agent. You can see exactly what alternative flights are available, and how much it will cost. Award tickets can also be changed online! In addition, if you purchased a fully flexible ticket, you can change your flight more than once, at no extra cost. Online rebooking is available both for AIR FRANCE and KLM customers. Holland Herald

KLM BEHIND THE SCENES
Free to fly The flight experience can be exciting and exhilarating. From the busy airport bustle at check-in, to peering down at the world at 30,000 feet cruiselevel, we encounter an unfamiliar environment outside our normal routine. While some people find this thrilling, some of us are unsettled with the experience, and become nervous and anxious before and during our journey. “About one-third of all passengers undergo some degree of psychological discomfort during a flight,” estimates psychologist and pilot Lucas van Gerwen, the founder of VALK, the only recognised institute in The Netherlands for people with a fear of flying. “It is the second largest phobia in the Western world, after speaking in public.”
Custom-made VALK has been helping people overcome fear of flying for 20 years. Originally founded by Leiden University and KLM, the organisation now provides courses and treatment for approximately 750 people a year and benefits from additional cooperation and support from rom Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, ol, and airlines Martinair and transavia. avia. com. It is housed in its own n purpose-built centre in Leiden, den, The Netherlands. “We provide customised d help,” says Lucas. “This

begins with a personal diagnostic evaluation – an intake – followed by two or three additional individual sessions, if necessary. After this, participants spend two and half days involved with various aspects of the flight experience, helped by trained KLM pilots and our own psychologists. “We inform them on how to cope with occurrences such as turbulence and
“Without fear we wouldn’t be able to function” cross-wind landings,” continues Lucas. “A therapist provides stress management training and we provide mock-up cabin situations in one of the many rooms here. We also have (VR) HUD have a a Virtual Reality Rea headset heads (left) which provides simulated prov surroundings, like surro busy airport or a bu confined space, a co people get to help h used to different use
environments which they would normally find unsettling. “Afterwards, participants are taken to Schiphol where they can sit in a cabin simulator and stationary aircraft in the airport hangars. Then we accompany them on a short flight.”
Soaring success VALK’s accomplishment rate is truly impressive: “If participants are still flying anxiety-free one year after attending our courses, then we count that as a success,” says Lucas. “Currently, that figure is running at 98%.” In addition, the methods that VALK has developed over the years are recognised as authoritative and have been adopted by similar institutions worldwide. “Fear of flying, like all fears, has nothing to do with a real threat,” says Lucas. “It is how we imagine a situation could be. In the end, fear is a normal emotion. Without it we wouldn’t be able to function in our daily lives. We teach people how to interpret and handle that emotion.” VALK Foundation, Sandifortdreef 1a, Leiden, The Netherlands. +31 (0)71 5273733; info@valk.org; www.valk.org Holland Herald

KLM PEOPLE & PLANET
Fuelling the future
Every year, millions of passengers board KLM flights with a burning desire to discover new lands. Unfortunately, these countries can also be home to children in need – a need outlined in the UN Millennium Development Goals. KLM AirCares offers promotional, logistical and financial support to NGOs to help them achieve these goals. One of these organisations is Malaria No More! a Dutch foundation that contributes towards the prevention and treatment of malaria, especially in Africa.
NET GAINS FROM MALARIA NO MORE!
In Tanzania, Malaria No More! is supporting FAME, the Foundation for African Medicine and Education. FAME works with like-minded partners to bring quality health care to Karatu, an area in northern Tanzania where malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoearelated diseases are the main cause of death among children younger than five. To donate money and/or Flying Blue Miles to this or any other AirCares charity, please visit www. aircares.nl or make a donation during this flight (see the last page of our shopping section in this issue). If you would like more information on Malaria No More!, please visit www.malarianomore.eu

Malaria is manageable
KLM has been a pioneer in the he research and development off alternative fuels. It recently successfully trialled a passenger er flight powered partly by a bio fuel manufactured from the camelina a plant, and is working closely with third-party rty research and technological institutes titutes to investigate what further fuel options ptions are available. At the influential World Bio Fuels Markets Conference, held in Amsterdam msterdam earlier this year, Jan Ernst de Groot, root, Managing Director KLM, passionately nately outlined what he thinks should be done within the aviation industry to pursue the development – and ultimate usage age – of bio fuels. “Reducing our carbon footprint rint will not be realised solely by the implementation of cost-based measures like emissions trading g schemes,” says De Groot. “A lott has already been achieved through h efficiency measures, but this has as to go hand in hand with technological al advancement. To make the use e of sustainable bio fuels a real possibility, sibility, this alternative technology has to be set in motion. KLM has already taken en action
by ssetting up a consortium that will not only conduct research into alternative fuels but will also develop them and – fuel ultimately – start their production. ultim “This is a huge ‘energy transition’ that “Th demands a multi-party, multi-track deman approach. There are a lot of parties which approa need to get involved – governments, suppliers, scientists –to name only a few. supplie “It is also vitally important that we consider the sustainability of conside manufacturing bio fuels. There should be manufa negative knock-on effects for food no neg chains, biodiversity or any other ecological consideration. To this end, we ecolog work very closely with the World Wide v Fund for Nature in The Netherlands, who supervises the strict sustainability criteria super applied to the eventual feedstock we will applie for our bio fuels.” use fo Johan van de Gronden, Director of the Joh World Wide Fund for Nature in The Wo Netherlands, endorses this view: “KLM Ne on the right track with its bio fuels is o policy. We realise the importance of policy researching different feedstocks for the researc manufacture of bio fuels, but we must man be careful that these processes don’t interfere with any existing food in chains and nature.” c

Hand baggage rules at EU airports To increase passenger safety, security rules for hand luggage are in place for all flights, in accordance with European Union regulations. When passing through security control, you will be required to present liquids, gels, pastes, lotions and aerosols separately, in individual containers of not more than 100ml, packaged in a re-sealable, transparent plastic bag (maximum volume 1 litre, 1 bag per person).
Airport shopping in the EU
Airport shopping outside the EU
Within the European Union, liquids and gels that you purchase after passing through passport control, or on board the aircraft will be packaged and sealed for you, together with the receipt. The unbroken seal is valid for 24 hours.
If you buy liquids or gels at a non-EU airport and change planes at an EU airport, your purchases will be confiscated at the EU airport security check. This can also happen for purchases you make on board an aircraft operated by an airline from a non-EU country. For further information visit www.klm.com

pecialized in the establishment and management of industrial as well as smallholders’ plantations, allied processing and downstream industries. The main focus of the tree crops rests on oil palm and rubber. The group recently diversified its activities into cattle ranching. Currently the Group owns 45.000 ha of oil palm plantations, 15.000 ha of rubber trees and a cattle ranch with 6.000 animals. The Group carries out its corporate responsibility by taking a long term approach to strategic decision-making that recognizes the interests of its staff, shareholders, business partners, consumers, and the world-wide economies in which it operates. Spread over its subsidiaries in Nigeria, Ghana, Gabon and Ivory Coast, Siat employs over 8.000 people. The head office is located in Brussels. The Group strongly believes in an environmentally responsible management and firmly cares about its social responsibilities. For example, all factory waste of the oil mills is recycled into the plantation or used as fuel to generate “green process” steam and electricity. The company also assists communities with education and social infrastructure development such as roads, potable water, electricity, dispensaries and the like. These actions aim at creating commitment and stability, which in turn provides security for the Group’s investments. Siat is constantly looking for new opportunities and for dynamic, motivated people to join its team.
