Shaping the Future

Mark Day School’s Annual Report 2015-2016

From the Head of School

“The teachers saw a speck of light, and hope, and desire inside me. They reached in my soul and dug, and challenged until they ignited that flame. I always had a little genius inside of me; it just took this school to bring it out.” One of my favorite things about Mark Day School is how, each June, our graduating students stand before our community and share personal reflections on their Mark Day experiences. This has been a tradition for years, but each class creates something entirely new through their individual perspectives. Graduation is one of the best ways to understand what we are up to at Mark Day School. The ceremony always heightens my appreciation for these young women and men as they head out of our doors into the next set of challenges and opportunities, and for the remarkable school and community that guide and support them along the way. The 2016 graduation was no different. Students’ words were inspiring and profound. The opening quote is from a student of the class of 2016, reflecting on overcoming her fear of making mistakes and bringing her inner nerd out for all to see. Another classmate commented on the dichotomy of living in Richmond and going to school in Marin, and how she learned to appreciate all of the different elements of herself: “As I’ve matured, this school has taught me that I shouldn’t be ashamed of who I am. It has taught me that it’s good to be extraordinary because life would be so boring if everyone was the same.” Since the very founding of the school, there has been a growth mindset at work here--an attitude of continual

improvement that has led to the outstanding program we enjoy today and toward the even stronger one we develop for tomorrow. Students touched on it during their speeches at graduation, as in this quote: “What I have gotten the most out of my Mark Day School experience is the idea of never giving up. Everyone will stumble and fall at some point, but it is just a matter of how you pick yourself back up.” And it is the same mindset that led us to develop the plans for the new Learning Commons, Creativity Lab, and Amphitheater and Quad--spaces that will enable teachers to stretch our students in new ways. None of this would happen without our community --and without the generous philanthropy that affects every child and every teacher at Mark Day School. The pages that follow highlight some of the work that our amazing students accomplish here at Mark Day, and the myriad ways that our faculty innovate to ensure that our students are ready for the world beyond. None of it could happen without the commitment of our remarkable community. Thank you to everyone who stretched and participated in the True Blue Annual Fund, in the We Create Campaign, and in the Spring Fundraiser, and who helped in any way to make this school a better one. I would like to end with one more message from the Class of 2016: “I have always been encouraged to do things that were out of my comfort zone and that I never thought I would have. Thank you, Mark Day School, for always letting me be who I am and helping me find my voice. I have been supported from beginning to end, and that is why I am standing here today.” I echo this graduate’s thanks to each one of you for your support. It is why we are standing here today, and why we can look ahead with such optimism and excitement. Sincerely,

Head of School

Our Mission Mark Day School discovers and nurtures what is finest in each child in a vibrant, inclusive learning community. BY THE NUMBERS The 2015-2016 school year was marked by familiar traditions like joke assemblies and the all-school chess tournament, and by new activity around campus--most notably, construction on our new Learning Commons and Creativity Lab. Here’s a breakdown of another successful year by the numbers.

Our Faculty Thank You “Teaching the craft of writing is one of my greatest joys as an educator. This summer, I was thrilled to travel with my 5th grade teaching partner, Lacy Zehner, to attend the Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Program at Columbia University in New York. Joined by educators and administrators from 32 countries and 36 states, this intense 40-hour course included writer’s craft teaching from leading literacy experts and children’s book authors. These inspiring educators generously shared teaching techniques and practical advice that will guide and expand the writer’s workshop programs Lacy and I offer in our classrooms. - Deborah Pannell, 5th Grade Teacher

Our teachers continually seek professional development and look forward to bringing what they’ve learned to the classroom. On behalf of our entire faculty and staff, thank you. Associate Director of Technology Tatian Greenleaf attended Tinkering School for Educators in San Francisco, where he learned how to incorporate SEL into tinkering projects. Mandarin Teacher Joyce Chen learned about motivating students’ learning through games using traditional Chinese toys at First Chinese Innovation Forum in Oakland. First Grade Teacher Geneva Conway joined her peers at Mark Day School’s INSPIRE Summer Institute to redesign the Human Body Unit to meet project-based learning (PBL) standards. Sixth Grade Teacher Tim Evans attended workshops at the National Science Teachers Association Regional Conference led by science educators from across the country. Spanish Teacher LuzMaria Strohm learned how to incorporate Mexican art into her classes at the Hands on Mexican Culture Seminar in Mexico.

Financial Figures

Dear Friends of Mark Day School,

Endowment*

Thank you for investing in Mark Day School in 2015-16. We are grateful to you--the alumni, families, and friends--who show your belief in the school through your generosity. Mark Day School’s students, faculty and staff are shaped by your philanthropy. We salute True Blue Fund co-chairs Carl Reichardt and Melissa Silvers and the team of 30 volunteers who helped raise $689,000 from nearly 500 current and alumni families, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends of the school. Through the leadership of Helen and Victor Castillo, Amie and Terry Dewane, and Anne Pia and Todd Lookinland, departing 8th grade families contributed $33,000 to The Eighth Grade Endowment Fund in 2015-16. The Parents’ Association, led by Stephanie Parker, raised $270,000 through The Future’s So Bright Auction, eScrip/gift cards, and the Fall Social and Golf Tournament. We extend a tremendous thank you to auction co-chair Kathryn Freeman, countless volunteers, and generous donors who made the event a success! The auction Fund-a-Need raised $111,000 for Agile Classrooms. Lastly, we tip our hat to all of you for investing in We Create: The Campaign for Mark Day School. To date, $5.5 million toward the $6.5 million fundraising goal has been pledged, which is outstanding. Thank you to co-chairs Terry Powers and Shalu Saluja for their unwavering energy and enthusiasm. We will be reaching out to all members of the community in the coming year to ask you to come together to support this exciting project that will transform teaching and learning. When we come together, it is amazing what can be accomplished! Sincerely,

Wendy Morris Levine ‘89 Director of Development

Fund-a-Need 2015-2016

Because of the money raised through the 2016 Fund-a-Need, we will be able to offer students a variety of seating options that suit individual learning needs. We have partnered with VS Furniture, designers who recognize the body-brain connection and co-authors of the book The Third Teacher: 79 Ways You Can Use Design to Transform Teaching & Learning.

Desks

In the Lower School, height-adjustable tables will be added to the back of classrooms, which function as sitting and standing desks using a pneumatic lift mechanism. In the Upper School, each classroom will have a set of three to six desks that will be height-adjustable. These desks are designed to blend in with the rest of the furniture to normalize their presence and use.

Active Seating

More active seating will be added to every classroom, including chairs that swivel and roll, and stools with convex bottoms that engage students’ brains by allowing their bodies to slightly shift balance.

Imagination Playground

In order to provide more options for recess and lunchtime play, a new Imagination Playground set will be featured among Lower School playground activities so that students can create, build, and play.

The Eighth Pillar The members of the Eighth Pillar have given either $100,000 or more to Mark Day School since joining the community or $10,000 in the last year. Learning to Code Introducing students to the concept of coding is more than a fun addition to curriculum--it’s an opportunity to empower students to increase their understanding of technology and discover a potential passion. At Mark Day, we have always believed that it’s important to enable students to understand what’s going on behind the technology they use and learn how to control it. Integrating coding into our curriculum is an extention of that belief. During the 2015-2016 school year, 3rd through 8th graders had the opportunity to learn about coding. MV Code Club instructors worked with Mark Day teachers and students in grades 3 through 6 to complete a 10-lesson unit on coding fundamentals using Scratch, an online programming environment developed at MIT. In 7th and 8th grade, MV Code Club taught a java script elective in the Fall.

We Create Campaign

It is an exciting time at Mark Day School as we are on the cusp of creating innovative new learning spaces for Mark Day students. This transformation is possible thanks to your extraordinary generosity. As with all we do at Mark Day, we prioritize people and program first. Thus, as we envision the physical spaces becoming a reality, we are focusing on deepening the curriculum that will fill all the classrooms on campus. These new spaces will be places where the walls disappear, where students practice the value of persistence and iteration, and where they collaborate together with a diverse and talented group of peers. We are working in partnership to create a better future for our students, present and future. We thank you for your investment and look forward to sharing these new spaces with your children as they explore, learn, and grow.

On the other side of the fence

We’re almost there...

Since we broke ground in April 2016, the front of our school has undergone quite the transformation. Here’s what has been accomplished so far:

To date, we’ve raised:

Summer 2015

Mobilization initiated, including moving trailers onto the premises and disconnecting utilities

Winter 2016

Hazmat abatement was completed, which included the removal of hazardous materials

April 2016

Demolition--the old Admin building was knocked down and materials were removed from the area

May 2016

Site work included grading, adjusting utilities, and preparing for the building pad

Summer 2016

Foundation was laid in preparation for building the structure

$5,500,000 The generosity of the Mark Day School community has brought us to this point--$5.5 million has been committed to date and as we launch the community phase of the campaign, we are close to reaching our goal of $6.5 million. This year we are turning to our entire school community--all families, alumni, grandparents, and friends--to support the mission of Mark Day School and join us in creating the campaign of the future.

Learning to Create Thanks to your donations, this past spring, Art Teacher Karen Klier had the opportunity to attend the National Art Education Association Convention (NAEA) in Chicago, IL to advance Mark Day’s visual arts program. Attending the NAEA gave Art Teacher Karen Klier the opportunity to connect with the nation’s best educators and learn about their practices. At the conference, Mrs. Klier learned about keeping digital portfolios, which she has been wanting to do for Mark Day students. “I have long been interested in finding a way for students to write about their work,” says Mrs. Klier. “Incorporating a sustainable writing opportunity into the arts program helps the artist formalize the thinking behind their creation.” She also took two classes offered by The Chicago Art Institute. “This conference helped me expand curriculum and share ideas with other educators.”

Hunger & Homelessness As part of their community engagement, 8th graders alternate between visiting GLIDE, where students take a tour of the Tenderloin and help serve lunch to the homeless, and the San Francisco Food Bank to help package and prepare food to be given to the homeless. By visiting both organizations, students can see both sides of how the process works--both preparing food and interacting with the homeless. These opportunities allow students to participate in an organization that serves a huge population in the community.

Sustainability Seventh graders visit Marin Open Spaces and the Richardson Bay Audubon Center in Tiburon to participate in sustainability efforts. The 7th grade science teacher first teaches a unit on invasive species, during which members from both organizations speak in the classroom. Following the unit, students spend the day removing invasive species in natural habitats.

Building Relationships For over 10 years, second graders have been visiting local assisted living facilities once a month during the school year. This year, students visited Alma Via and Aldersly to spend time with seniors. For Halloween, students visit in costume, and during the holidays, they bring festive cards. It’s a partnership that values spending time together and building relationships across age difference.

Learning to Give Back Recognizing and responding to the needs of others is integral to our mission as a school. Service supported by learning in and beyond the classroom encourages students to become local and global citizens with compassionate habits of heart and mind.

Holiday Giving Several grades collaborate to raise money and donate goods to Adopt-aFamily of Marin, an organization that helps local homeless families. First and 5th grade buddies make cards that accompany their gifts. Kindergarteners also make cards and collect mittens to donate. Seventh and 8th graders raise money by hosting movie night. Each group of students uses money raised to purchase and deliver items on the families’ wish lists.

Why We Give When Ann and Paul Brenner reflect on Mark Day School, they remember it as “an absolutely marvelous school” for their son James, class of 2004. Mark Day School was “academic and challenging, but friendly and warm at the same time.” They cite the strength of the athletics program, too. Because James has been “interested in history since the day he was born, Mr. Fargo [the history teacher at the time] was a dream come true.” James’s love of history grew so much that he and a Mark Day School classmate participated in the Junior States of America, a 3-week civics and leadership education program at Georgetown University, culminating in students visiting Congress. Ann and Paul desire to help others send their children to a great school prompted them to name Mark Day School in their estate plans. In so doing, they are members of the Mark Day School Legacy Society. By naming the school as a beneficiary, they are fulfilling a value that is important to them both--that everyone deserves the best education possible. By designating their donations to tuition assistance, they are helping to provide for children for generations to come. Reflects Ann, “The teachers and the student are most important at a school. It’s what goes on in the minds of the people that really counts.”

What’s Next?

As we begin the 2016-2017 school year, we are excited to learn, grow, and watch our new building rise from the ground. We greatly appreciate the participation of our community to provide our students with an education that will lay the foundation for the rest of their lives.
