Three Things to Remember As long as you're dancing, you can break the rules. Sometimes breaking the rules is just extending the rules. Sometimes there are no rules. - Mary Oliver Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to present Yolanda Sánchez’s fourth solo exhibition Sometimes There Are No Rules. During China’s Tang Dynasty (690-705AD), the Three Perfections first gathered. Perhaps one of the earliest examples of a collective collaborating to create one unique and harmonious work, the Three Perfections is traditionally comprised of a poet, a painter, and a calligrapher. Putting this discipline to the test in her most recent series of paintings, Yolanda Sánchez includes varying aspects of all three “perfections”. Each painting, replete with her typical vocabulary of wildly expressionistic brushwork coupled with expansive passages of white canvas, feels like a fresh sensory experience. By mixing references to the natural world with contrasting compositional structures, Sánchez creates imagery that is experiential while remaining separate from narrative. Using color as a vehicle for experience, heightened by gesture, composition, and texture, Sánchez’s paintings provide a refuge from the day to day. Instead, they encourage their viewers to celebrate the visual and physical world when it may otherwise, be overlooked. Yolanda Sánchez was born in Havana, Cuba and immigrated to the United States in 1960. She obtained a PhD in Clinical Psychology in 1979. Yolanda is a Fulbright scholar. Later she acquired her BFA and subsequently, an MFA from Yale University, where she studied with British painter John Walker. She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and her work is included in many public and private collections including the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Jacksonville, Florida and the Neiman Marcus Corporate Headquarters in Dallas, Texas. Currently, Sánchez lives and works in Miami Beach, Florida.
