y r o t S , a v e 1972

How time flies! Back in 1972, Margarethe, better known as Greti, headed off to run a bed and breakfast with 14 rooms. Back then the chosen site was off the beaten track and a bit uphill. A top location in more ways than one. That same year Greti tackled the first constructional challenges and built a new terrace on steep terrain. Then she put in a completely new kitchen and began offering her guests half board catering. Her daughter Eva was a born skiing instructor. Constantly on the go, always in a good mood. From her early years she's been interested in cosmetics, wellness and good health. Joining her mother's business never crossed her mind. Eva decided to work for herself. She invested her entire seed capital in a chair, a massage chair. Cosmetics, beauty and massage were on offer. In space adjacent to her skiing business, she built up a solid customer base step by step.

1981 1997

In 1981 the next step followed. The garage of 12 square meters was quickly converted into antiny and elegant cosmetics studio. Massage treatments included. During the 1980s business boomed in the garage and in Saalbach too. A life-changing event the following year greatly altered further development plans. In 1982 Eva met a certain Hans. Their shared passion for dancing brought them closer. The native Schwarzach guy (born a few valleys away) was a music and dance maniac. Eva liked that. Exciting and exhausting years of development and transformations followed. Dancing, partying and working to extremes. Armed with the power of youth, they managed to do it all. The two of them climbed to the top of the wedding cake in the year 1988. Their conjugal life had productive aspects, too. It wasn't longbefore their daughter Daniela saw the light of day. The first child. New projects. New suites were established in the maternal guesthouse. That was the start in the hotel business. At that point the boarding house was history. For a little while family life was somewhat calmer. The next milestone was reached in 1997. The hotel was given a general make-over.

We are a about t lready curiou he stor s i e s e v will wr ite. a,

Reception was enlarged, rooms were added and the garden was given a facelift. Hans' and Eva's creativity never gave them a rest. The "Fit for life health weeks" were launched and marketed. The Hay diet, fasting, raw fruit and vegetables, physical exercise and active awakening were completely new ideas brought to life by the couple's personal commitment and attention to detail. The Fit for life tent was the site for the new offering. "Wellness cannot be bought. It comes only with a change of lifestyle," or so the motto said. Hiking, golfing and skiing with the boss became a smashing and entertaining experience for many guests. On the business side, the name of the hotel was changed from Hotel Eva to Garden Hotel Eva.

2006 2012

Eva remained true to her passion. In 2003 the Eva PERFUMERY was opened with what Hans called a "pompous" fashion show. In the same year Hans became chairman of the Saalbach tourist board. Since then the fate of tourism in Saalbach has been in his hands. The eventful days of their earlier life slowly shifted. Work was scheduled around the clock. A dramatic event put 2006 squarely in the family's chronicle. The former Hotel Ingonda went on the market. Eva and Hans were determined to make their lifetime dream come true. On 22 September they signed the sales contract. The first general renovation was completed by December 1st. The eva,VILLAGE was launched. And how life goes, the two got an offer for a second interesting in autumn 2009. The cafĂŠ and pastry shop HĂśll, right next to the eva,VILLAGE, was a great temptation. And a business opportunity. In short: On December 22nd, only one week after the purchase, the eva,ALM opened its doors. "A big hit since Day One," says Hans happily about their quick and smart decision. There's no standing still for the passionate skier. In the following year the terrace was enlarged on different levels. In the year 2012 the next generation got involved. Daniela successfully completed her MBA studies in April and started her professional career in her parents' company that summer. Daniela, the creative spirit, infused the whole business with innovation and a fresh breeze. Again and again, guests were surprised by new ideas.

FAVOURITE

DISHES OF THE UNTERKOFLER FAMILY

It is well-known that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. That’s the reason why the hosts reveal their favourite dishes in this edition. Needless to say, you’ll find them on the eva,MENU. We suggest you give it a whirl. Here's a preview. SOUP TIGER The good spirit of the house has nothing to do with Heinrich Hoffmann's story of the Suppenkaspar (who refused to eat his soup). Eva loves soups in general and the "Kaspressknödel" soup especially. A dumpling soup tastily refined with cheese from the Pinzgau region. "A good soup is healthy," says Eva. "It puts some life into you and does not challenge the stomach." Now you know why Eva is called the good spirit of the house. Secret disclosed. Imitation recommended.

POTATO GOULASH AS A DIET TIP The senior of the house has developed a pretty idiosyncratic relationship with a classic on eva,MENU. The potato goulash. Not amused about his increasing weight, he went on a potato goulash diet in the cold season of 2013. The impressive loss of eight kilos was the gratifying result. The diet faded away with the awakening of spring, but his passion for potato goulash remains. Delicious. Bodyfriendly.

GENERATION BURGER This was kind of predictable. Daniela can’t keep her hands off the creative burger compositions at eva,ALM. It reminds her of Australia, the ocean, freedom, her stay Down Under. That was the cradle of the one and only eva,BURGER. In fact the burger idea was imported to Austria immediately after her in Australia adventure. Okay, naturally prepared with premium ingredients of the region. At first sight, you wouldn't expect a burger recipe behind the Vintschgerl-bun. The odds-on favorite - "in fact, I like all burgers and there is something for every taste" – is the Veggi Burger. "Healthful and light nutrition is important to me".

HOTEL

ABSOLUTELY "LÄSSIG". AN ALPINE AWARENESS OF LIFE In Saalbach you will repeatedly hear the very Austrian word "lässig". It may come up in a "lässig" descent or a "lässig" guy. The best explanation is "easy-going", relaxed and casual, yet strong and independent.

It might be the selection of food or the accompanying wine. Then the demand for quality is pretty high. For other easy-going types, good planning for the next ski run is extremely important. You'd better ask Gunter. Still others might want a striking recommendation for an effective wellness treatment.

People tagged "easy-going" are generally expected to be lax. But you better watch out. Often there is more behind the laid-back facade. These people know precisely what they want and they lead their lives according to clear values. Their moral anchor gives them the freedom to go through life in a casual but self-determined way.

THEY ALL SHARE INTEREST AND CURIOSITY, WHICH PROPEL THEM FROM ONE MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE TO THE NEXT. Their clear vision of life generally steers them in the right direction. You can feel their eagerness for new challenges and inspiring experiences. That should satisfy.

Many of the eva,VILLAGE guests are really "easy-going", especially in the way they communicate and treat others. If something goes wrong, they often respond with a knowing look and a shrug. On the other hand, they can be demanding when something important is at stake. Astute observers know at a glance just what is considered important.

COMFORTABLE. NATURAL VARIETY. ALPINE. LĂ„SSIG. CHIC.

THE SCENT OF NATURE SAYS HELLO.

Again and again the vitality and diversity of nature is an overwhelming experience. Green. White. Blue. In keeping with the laws of nature, the rooms at eva,VILLAGE are furnished with purely natural raw materials. Wood, loden cloth and lovingly selected natural drapery of excellent quality make up the leitmotif found in all areas and rooms.

Curiously, you step into the room and sniff the air. What is that lovely scent? Why, Swiss stone pine, of course. Am I in the forest? No, but close to it. A look out the window is the best proof. The huge eva,Zuckerl catches your eye and you think "sweet seduction". Way off the mark.

And yet, no room is exactly like another. "We take nothing off the peg. That just wouldn't do for the living eva,STYLE that we love," Daniela says about the eva, interior design. The hoteliers' unfailing love of detail repeatedly yields one-of-a-kind creations. It's the diversity that turns every stay into a unique experience.

You open the cupboard door and lean in. There it is again, that woody pine perfume. The senses are enlivened and the view out window is unforgettable.

Winterly breakfast Out of the cozy down feathers. Into a new day full of winter adventures. Freshly fallen snow? Whatever. Anyway the slopes in Saalbach are always in top condition. From the room and down the stairs – your body is screaming for action. In the evening, you happily take the lift. Make a beeline for the fruit and vegetable squeezer. True to the motto "freshly squeezed is half rocked." Apples, oranges, carrots, a dash of fine olive oil – there's no disputing taste. On the way to the table, pick out an herbal tea. Let’s see if there is a new and refreshing blend. Each type of tea is labeled with its special effect. Muesli, yogurts, homemade jams or a bit hardier – sausage and Pinzgau cheese. Of course you can have a dairy-free and gluten-free breakfast if you prefer.

The day can go into full speed now. The sneak peek out the window makes it clear: today’s challenges require a lot of energy. It’s going to be an active, wonderful winter day.

1 THE GOBLET Here's where the wine feels at home. The size of the goblet depends on which gustative nerve is to be addressed. It determines the extent to which the taste is dominated by the wine's acidity, fruity glaze or sweetness. Tulip shapes are most suitable for sparkling wines, because the yeast builds up best on thin and relatively high walls. Apple-shaped glasses with a slightly narrowed mouth are the perfect holder for white wines. The bouquet remains in the glass and the nose can better ingest it. The ample aromas of red wine like bigger, stouter glasses. The wide mouth ensures that the wine can spread throughout the mouth. The sweet dessert wines meant to be sipped come into their own best in small goblets. Then the taste unfolds on the tip of the tongue.

2 THE STEM A long stem keeps the wine at an ideal temperature. The wine glass is supposed to be held by the stem, never by the bowl. Body temperature should never affect the temperature of your wine.

3 THE FOOT The base of the glass should correspond to the overall design of the glass.

4 THE RIM Affects the taste experience too. Shouldn’t be too thick or rounded. Ensures that the wine wets the tongue quickly and evenly. It also helps to dose the wine in small sips.

5 THE GLASS WALLS Should be thin, but thick enough to prevent outer temperature from affecting the wine’s temperature significantly. Otherwise, the wine gets too warm or the glass steams up. You drink with your eyes.

Wine temperatures White wine: 8 to 10°C Red wine: 15 to 17°C

Château Lafite-Rothschild.

G. THE GSELLMANN

One of the world's most famous wineries (chateaux) is near Bordeaux. The wine-growing estate has more than 178 hectares, 103 of which are devoted to viticulture. It is currently managed by Éric de Rothschild. The manor is owned by the French branch of the Rothschild banking dynasty. When the wineries of Bordeaux were rated at the International Exhibition of Paris in 1855, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild was crowned with the grade "Premier Cru" (first growth). Although Napoleon asked that the ranking be based on quality, wine brokers rated wines from the left bank with an annual production of more than 2,000 cases. Lafite-Rothschild claimed first place in the lists for a long time. The vineyard area covers 103 hectares, cultivated with 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 30 years. As grapes from vines less than 10 years old (currently about 20 hectares) are not used for Grand Vin, the average age of vines used for premium wines is 40 years.

This charismatic red wine is made from the autochthonous grape varieties Blaufränkisch (95%) and St. Laurent (5%). Special features of this wine are the age of the vines (about 80 years) and its unmatched balance.

Éric de Rothschild / Château near Bordeaux

Founded in 1859, the GAJA winery is considered one of the finest estates in the world. It was one of the first to shift from filling barrels to filling bottles. GAJA is located in Cuneo near Barbaresco in the idyllic Piedmont region. The winery is now managed by the family's 4th generation. Today’s owner Angelo Gaja, who succeeded his father in 1969, works on new ideas and places great value on excellent varietals and premium-quality manufacture. The vines are cut shorter (lower yield, higher proportion of fruit)

Fully ripe grapes are harvested by hand. The traditional mash fermentation with a submerged cap and maceration takes 50 days. The organic deacidification takes place in small oak casks over a period of 40 months. Repeated stirrings clarify the wine. "After the cuvée is assembled, the wine is aged for four months in big oak casks." Albert Gesellmann / vintner from Deutschkreutz

DARMAGI.

M1. The best from the Markowitsch winery. 80% Merlot / 15% Blaufränksich / 15% Zweigelt. Is among the rarest and most highly desired wines in Austria. Produced in small batches. In an exceptional year, an outstanding cuvée of Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon can be created from the grapes that grow in the sandy clay soil on limestone bedrock. Grapes are selected by hand from the beginning to middle of October.

In 1978 when Gaja planted Cabernet Sauvignon in vineyards previously devoted to Nebbiolo, legend has it that upon hearing the news, his father exclaimed, "Darmagi!" (what a shame!). In honor of his father, Gaja called the wine "Darmagi".

"The M1 poses the greatest challenge to terroir and wine-making. A wine for special occasions." Gerhard Markowitsch / vintner in Göttlesbrunn

THE RARE WINE

SALZBERG.

MAKES THE DAY.

Over the years new vineyards have sprung up around Salzburg as wine growers planted one "belt" of land (local terminology) after the other. In the process they enlarged the grape-growing area and diversified the type of soil for viniculture. Clay, silt, limestone, sand and crushed rock are the five most dominant varieties (complex soil conditions) that offer conditions favorable to Merlot and Blaufr채nkisch. The sites lie in the sun where the grapes get lots of warmth and not too much water. The bunches of grapes are loose; the berries are small and thickskinned. Organic cultivation methods yield fleshy, full-bodied and complex wines. In the high regions of Salzburg, where the soil is less dense and crushed stones dominate, Zweigelt has the last word. Weighty, compact and straightforward, it flows into Pannobile. Heike & Gernot Heinrich / vintner in Baumgarten

iW th love from Eva. Again and again, love of detail inspires the eva,TEAM to search for the very special things in life. Everything done with love is authentic. So things turned out the way they usually turn out for people on a quest. Over the years a conventional wine rack became an outstanding cellar of selected rarities. It's true. We humans are hunter-gatherers. And we gather rarities drop by drop. Rare wines are made for special moments. They match the pleasurable eva, culture. Real eva,MOMENTS are in sight. The love of Lucullan wines is expressed in the selection of an appropriate and classy glass.

ABOUT JOINING IN AND TRYING THINGS OUT. It demands courage. And a readiness to take risks. Absolutely no bashfulness.

The first bookings came in. Guests arrived. Not much clue about the matter. And above all: no program. With the first arrival, jaws dropped. Weight reduction? Ha, ha – the guests were already slender! Had they missed the point?

It demands courage. And a readiness to take risks. Absolutely no bashfulness. Hans has always been known as a fun-loving person. Always out and about. Always passionately involved. During his stay at Thurneralm in 1996, one of his hosts gave Hans a reading tip. Very well. Lucky Hans can do without literary nuggets of wisdom, but this particular topic stirred his wife Eva. Tact was required. The topic in question was nutrition and new health trends (now known as "wellness").

Anyway, it was showtime. "Hello, when is active awakening scheduled tomorrow?" guest Herbert asked. "We are very excited about starting," he added. "If he had known how tense we were! Honestly, I didn't have a clue or a plan." "Oh, so sorry! Our Fit for life coach is ill. The training course is cancelled for tomorrow." A serious emergency justifies anything. Herbert, the guest, had attended a similar fitness session in his hometown. He offered to manage the course. Bingo, what a lucky thing. I reported for duty the next morning. For monitoring and training purposes. Of course, our own Fit for life coach was not able to conduct the training for the whole week. "Thanks once again for your helpful intervention, Herbert."

On the following day Hans stood in front of a bookshop at Zell am See. The book created a vision. Pop in and ask for it instantly – Do you have Fit for life? "The bestseller? You’ll find it right here," the well-read clerksaid as she pointed toward my feet. "Copies of the book were piled right in front of me. What, so many people are supposed to buy this book? And read it through? Incredible for me," said Hans about that long-ago day.

To learn from the guests. A plan for the future? Hans invited well-versed guests to join the team and quickly attained expert status. "With a little luck and a lack of bashfulness we got Fit for life off the ground," Hans says. Today he can still chuckle about the rocky start.

Today we know. This book changed a lot in the life of Hans and Eva. "It was the first book I devoured. "Unbelievable," says Hans with a shake of his head. The topic was spot on. The funds for a big wellness temple – a symbol for the spirit of the age – were not in the budget. Creativity was in demand. A business idea.

That’s hLowucktyhe Hsatonrsy. goes

Starting shot 1997: with a Fit for life tent in the yard. Weatherproof. A creaky timber floor was quickly put down and the tent was pitched. Only the "software" was missing. Losing weight through nutrition and exercise. Food combining, uncooked vegetarian food, active awakening and a lot of physical activity. Hans wanted to get some training in the subject. "No time left. I was working at the reception, doing the service, helping in the kitchen and being responsible for any other short-term need," the boss said.

LOUNGE & BAR

PLEASUREABLE MOMENTS FOR AFTERWARDS. Finished. Caught the last lift to the summit. Tingling with excitement, feelings of pleasure all over. It will be the last run down to the valley – for today. Very well. A gorgeous winter day comes to an end. The desire for more remains.

Hey, there's an empty spot on the cool terrace of eva,ALM. Heated, with cuddly blankets on request. Good. Better now. A cozy corner with a perfect view of the bustling après-ski scene. Get rid of the skis, loosen the ski boots – switch to relaxation mode. Settle down. Chill out to the music.

THE SLOPES ARE NEARLY DESERTED. YOU PRESS THE EDGES ONE MORE TIME INTO THE SNOW. TURN BY TURN. DOWN THE HILL.

Your dry mouth wants you to order now. Should it be mulled wine? Or better a thirst quencher first? Maybe cider. Or taste the eva, beer? OK, eva, beer is new – perfect for slaking your thirst. Sip by sip, you wet your dry throad. Now it's time for eva, mulled wine. Your appetite too demands immediate action. Browse through the menu. Ah, the agony of having to choose. Everything simply tastes marvellous here. The "eva,Almschmaus" is new this season.

Arrive with a self-assured stop in the valley. One last look up. That’s it. For today. Satisfaction with the eventful day floods in. Release the skis and stroll in the direction of the hotel. No need to hurry. Life pulses in the pedestrian zone. Everywhere. Laughter, music, clinking glasses, hugs – pure zest for life. Life in the valley is quite eventful, too. Cool. Typical for Saalbach. Shall I now? Or first back to the hotel?

Now there's a tasty idea. Signs are pointing to indulgence. I wonder what else the evening may bring?

WHEN A CUP GOES ON A JOURNEY.

SKI+WINE 03/17/2016 – 03/20/2016 The Tyrolean drobs by 04/01/2016

It was autumn 2014. The challenge was to design and order new eva,CUPS. So far, so good. No problem at all. The order was sent in good time. Anticipation was high. They look cool, the new cups. Estimated delivery time? Eight weeks. "Reasonable, no time constraints," Daniela thought. As everyone knows, life is full of surprises. This time too. Don't count your chicken before they're hatched. No stress. After 10 weeks, we just had to ask about our cups. The answer: "They're on their way." Okay, we've still got time. After 16 weeks we became seriously worried. We filed a missing item’s report. "Who has seen these cups? They got lost 16 weeks ago." Today Daniela can laugh about it. Nobody knew where they were. "They ought to be on one ship or another." We resigned ourselves to the thought that our cups would remain lost. Winter was heading our way.

"SOME DAYS FOR ME ONLY" ALONE ON TOUR. AWESOME. 3 / 4 / 7 nights from € 606,00 (flexible booking) 01/09/2016 – 01/16/2016

They remained lost. Nobody had them on the radar. "Not good. Anticipation had been pretty high. Somehow winter will have to get by without the new cups," Daniela admitted.

For those who like going on holiday on their own to meet new people. The program provides exciting counterpoints where people can connect casually and spend some time together. Perfectly suitable for buddy trips, too.

In early summer 2015 a delivery was announced. "We had no clue what the delivery could be. And suddenly the cups were on our doorstep. In absolutely sound condition, neatly packed. They arrived surprisingly just as they had unexpectedly gotten lost. We welcomed them with hearty laughter and thought: "Well, those who go on a journey have something to talk about." If only the eva,CUPS could talk.

Joint skiing experiences, lively fondue sessions, perhaps a snowmobile ride, wine-tastings, winter BBQ or a toboggan challenge are all on the agenda. Don't miss out on the daily "Aprés Ski of another kind" at eva,ALM. Find more details on www.evahotels.com

"It tastes best directly out of the bottle", says Martin, the beer specialist and assistant manager at eva,. But great from a glass, too. From the moment you pour the unfiltered amber liquid into the glass, it begs to be sipped. Charismatic and full-bodied. Brewed according to a traditional recipe with an alcohol content of 5.3% vol. and 12.5° original wort, this beer offers an intense malt aroma and a subtle taste of toffee. Have you tried it yet? Very well then. Cheers!

Everyone’s yearning for freedom and harmony with nature is unstoppable. A few years ago the average age of ski touring fans was above 42, but now it's around 30. The number of female touring fans is growing steadily. From families to extreme sport athletes, everybody moves uphill. I am an enthusiastic touring skier myself. The hibernal pleasure in the midst of nature is simply unbeatable. Adrenaline spills out in true moments of happiness. As elsewhere in life, alpine touring has binding rules too. Safety first. Important! The local police have decreed that slopes be closed between 5 p.m. and 8.30 a.m. The mountain railways would like to call your attention to the dangers due to the cable winch preparation and the work of the snow groomers after the close of business. Ski touring on closed slopes is FORBIDDEN. Danger of avalanches and other alpine dangers such as changes in the weather pattern can be life-threatening.

SHOW ME YOUR SKIS... ... AND I’LL TELL YOU WHO YOU ARE Whew! Today many, many different skis, bindings and accessories are on offer. It’s not easy to keep track of all the equipment. Not to mention how difficult it is to make the right choice. As with all decisions, you've got to ask the right questions first.

There’s got to be enough time for that. Well, then ask – for the sake of your skiing pleasure.

HERE A FEW THOUGHTS FOR YOUR WAY TO NEW EQUIPMENT

How do I want to carve? Am I a speed freak on the slope? Or a deep powder junkie? Is my style athletic? Am I physically fit and can I put pressure on the edges? Or do I prefer effortless turns on and off piste?

If someone is an ardent fan of alpine racers who fight for hundredths of a second on risky descents, he or she tends to pull on racing skis, too. The aggressive construction demands a similarly aggressive and powerful skiing style. But take note! The radii are not configured for conventional slopes!

Many questions and even more equipment. Your personal skiing instructor or the local sports outfitters always advise best. The performance of the World Cup skiers on TV is alluring.

Such an outing generally ends with frustration brought on by exhaustion. Or because the skis don’t do what the pilot prescribes! Apropos Pilot: You wouldn’t take a Formula One racing car on holiday.

And the link between you and the snow should be tailor-made.

36

EQUIPMENT TIP. "A real addict lays out the dough for several skis. Which doesn't really make the choice any easier."

SKI BOOTS. Boots have to fit perfectly and never pinch. The flex should correspond to your skiing style. Casual skiers won’t benefit from a hard boot. Hard boots with a flex of more than 130 are made for very athletic skiers. World Cup skiers flex over 170!

WALKING WITH A STICK. In an upright position with arms bent at a 90-degree angle, you should be able to hold the ski pole comfortably in your hands.

WIDE, CERTAINLY. BUT WHEN?

A WISE CHOICE LIES IN THE MIDDLE.

The professional free skis are another phenomenon. It doesn't really make sense to don wide, snowboard-like skis to rush down steep rock slopes and gorges that cannot be negotiated without skis.

A hybrid version of both is possibly the best ski for our realm. These all-mountain skis are at home on the slope. Anyway the "rocker" will grant enough buoyant force off-piste or on unprepared slopes – admittedly a rarity in this skiing region.

Free skiers are cool and that’s why many people want to use the same extremely broad skis as their idols.

The tighter radius ensures easy turns on all kinds of slopes without laying claim to the entire width of the descent. Furthermore, they forgive occasional mistakes and perform beautifully even in slushy snow. Anyone who thinks this is a ski only for beginners is wrong. The ski brilliantly bridges the gap between comfort and performance.

Chances to use this type of skis are rare. The extremely wide geometry provides a usable, yet moderate grip on primed slopes. These skis are suitable for deep powder snow of say, 40 cm. Apropos powder: Because they are not everyday items, the "fat boys" are considered secondary or specialty skis.

Apropos gap: a decent warm-up prevents quick exhaustion and unnecessary injuries. Just do it.

ONE GLANCE OUT THE WINDOW TELLS ME TODAY WILL BE AN AWESOME SKIING DAY. From the diary of Daniela Unterkofler

The admittedly still blurry look out the window makes it clear instantly. Get ready. The sleeping giants are awakening before our eyes. The sun is rising majestically from behind the mountain. Good thing that the Kohlmaisgondola is just around the corner. No time lost. Anticipation arises. Shortly before 8.30 a.m. Still okay. My craving is now completely awake. I can't wait to chisel the first turns into the – as always – perfectly prepared slopes. Ahh, that's just the thing. An avidtelemark skier, I look for my space on the slope. Most times I find it on Kohlmais, the eva,HOME MOUNTAIN. The starting pistol goes off while I'm still in the gondola, headed for the top station. Out and down – I'm wide awake now! Fantastic. Cold air fills my lungs. My sensors go on high alert in the snow. My body releases a flood of endorphins. After three great runs, my thighs are burning. The slopes get crowded. Time for a change. Bernkogel is waiting. The modern six-seat lift takes me to airy heights. The view is breathtaking. I pursue my goal. The mountain pasture of Hinterglemm, the end ofthe ski circus. An intermediate station at Reiterostbahn. How great to sit in the chairlift! Reminds me of my childhood – hovering above the mountains with no glass cupola separating me from the fresh air. Some time and a few runs later, I reach the Hochalm six – outstanding! The broadest slopes await my honed edges. They look like a big screen in front of me. After a few high-speed descents, I wander a bit farther to the T-bar lift of Spieleck – an adorable relict of pioneer times. The subtle decline of the slope is a dream. 100% natural. One glance to the right for a look at the end of the valley. No pillars in the way. Lovely. I return to Saalbach via "Schattseite". My legs are tired – after all Icurtsy with every turn to show my respect for this unique landscape. End of the day. A brief stopover at eva,ALM to have an urgently needed drink. And a friendly chat. What about tomorrow? Heading off to Fieberbrunn, absolutely new territory for me.

WAS THERE MORE WHITE IN FORMER TIMES? Since the mid-1980s, we have had several mild and snow-poor winters. The snowline has risen steadily. Snow is the major asset of all wintersports resorts and snow-making systems are a prerequisite for a safe winter season today.

FIND OUT ABOUT THE "DARK SIDE OF GLEMMTAL". The north walls of Glemmmtal are the playground of the experts and daring skiers. Here thecolorblack indicates really deep black. Since time immemorial these slopes have emanated a masculine fascination. The best control of skis and body is a must. Sufficient power and endurance are prerequisites. Steel edges need to be pushed strongly and skillfully across the steep stretchesof thesometimesstone-hard slopes. Most lightly frequented, they are perfect for short turns. Every turn brings forth the joy of movement. The intense burning of the thighs is just another part of this challenge. Ideally, the rhythm of your breath should be in sync with the rhythm of your movements. Even the approach to the slope is thrilling. The steepness is impressive – you had better become friends with this slope. No, these slopes are definitely not for everyone.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS SEASON.THE WORLD CUP COURSE AT ZWÖLFERKOGEL. It goes without saying – you cannot avoid the color black here. It stands for highest degree of difficulty. The World Cup course is always a struggle for beginners. Even athletic skiers discover their limits too. The pictures from the last World Cup race are still alive in our memories: athletessquatting as they rush down the valley on steepest descents. Tremendous jumps over brinks, overcoming borderline compressions – only the time counts. If you are directly confronted with these brinks and compressions, you can easily see and feel the demand for athletic excellence. Ludicrous precipices are mastered with one to two turns – an incredible exertion. Even critics have to nod their heads in respect. Those who know these descents only from TV broadcasts will be confronted with biting realities. A certain sense of humility arises. You feel humble in the presence of these athletes who perform so beautifully. And the strength of the mountains humbles too.

After a 13-year-long break, the "Audi FIS Ski World Cup" returned to Saalbach Hinterglemm. On 21st and 22nd February 2015, about 22,000 spectators were on hand for two outstanding men's speed races (downhill/Super G). The vibe was outstanding on both days. And the organisational team around President Peter Mitterer, Secretary General Peter Hartl and Race Manager Bartl Gensbichler was delighted by the praise of the athletes and their entourages. "It was a great festival. We received a great deal of praise. The preparation done since August 2014 together with the ÖSV worked out perfectly. Not only the great success of the ÖSV athletes, but also the highly motivated youngsters of our skiing club make me proud, " said President Mitterer. "It was a really cool weekend. I believe everyone can feel satisfied. The hard times of preparation paid off and were appreciated by the public," said Secretary General Hartl. The TV images that presented Sallbach Hinterglemm in radiant sunshine went around the world from Thursday on. Hartl was also fascinated by the enthusiasm of the fans – during the races, at the award ceremonies and at the drawing of the numbers. "There was a fantastic spirit all across the mountain. We would be more than happy to organize events like this for the Glemm valley all the time. And a World Championship certainly would be the biggest deal for Saalbach Hinterglemm." "Yeah, we have shown the skiing world what we are capable of. We experienced two smashing speed races and we stirred up a fire for skiing that reached far beyond the Salzburg region," said Race Manager Gensbichler. The organisational committee was especially proud of the fact that all plans worked out, including slope preparation, public viewing, side programme, traffic. "Honestly, we are very proud to have pulled together – and everything went smoothly. The event contributed to the positive spirit in the valley and created a pleasant feeling of community. Even the notorious nit-pickers I met were enthusiastic. Naturally, the sports results make me very happy, too," said Mayor Alois Hasenauer. Ski history also repeats itself, as can be seen in the World Cup ranking list from Saalbach Hinterglemm.

WORLD CUP REVIEW. 12/22/1999 The Men's Giant Slalom was the last alpine World Cup race of the last century. And this legendary event came about, thanks to Christian Mayer, Hermann Maier and Benjamin Raich in an Austrian triple victory!

02/22/2015 After a 13-year break, an Austrian triple victory at the "Audi FIS Skiing World Cup" crowned the comeback of Saalbach Hinterglemm. This time the winners in the downhill discipline were Matthias Mayer, Max Franz and Hannes Reichelt.

" . n e m l a e r r o f g n i h t e m o s s "That’

Bartl Gensbichler, formally "Barthlmae" and in plain Pinzgau dialect simply "da Bascht", has always been a child of the mountains. Since he was a little boy at Perfeldhof, in the shadow of Zwรถlferkogel.

from Perfeldhofto the valley station of the Zwรถlferkogel cabin. The next thrashing was pre-programmed. Unfortunately, Mom worked there at the lift's cash desk. But this obstacle too was tackled with aplomb. Unseen, the little imps sneaked onto the lift and off they went toward the summit. The next thrashing was pre-programmed. At the summit station, the kids' uncleworked the lift.

Lots of children were there. And a steep slope behind the house. "We were sliding down the hill when we were just three or four years old," the Bascht said. The skis at that time? More or less simple wooden planks. Actually, edges were screwed onto the base and a strap binding added to the top. The coating? "Red lacquer. When it flaked off, we just painted over it," saidBartl.

It was a childhood from a homeland picture book. Every winter day the schoolbag was thrown into the corner and off they went to the slope in search of the next adventure. "Schoolmaster Hannes Margreiter first helped us to fine-tune our style. Skiing was very important back then." As the new president of the Salzburg National Ski Association, Bartl tries to convey that to today's youth.

Times were simple back then. High shell ski boots, functional underwear, breathable ski jackets with anIphone pocket? No such things. Lots of fun anyway and risks galore. Unknown territory begged to be explored. No flank was too steep, no snow pile too high.

His own talent has been acknowledged and boosted by everyone in the village. Skiing schoolmaster Heri Wolf helped out with slalom poles and the first trainers Franz Feiersinger and Hans Hinterholzer encouraged Bartl on to the racing circuit. Already at his side was Hansi Enn. Two years younger and still a little imp, but a huge talent too. And like the Bascht, a bit of a rebel.

"Grandma carried us up the hill again and again when we were very small", said Bartl. What a luxury. It was like a single-seat chair lift with a one-WP (woman power) engine. But what fate awaited Bartl and his cousins when curiosity got the better of them and they slid downhill too far! Grandma was very strict about that. She punished every attempt to break out with a quick slap. But adventurers do not cry or complain. It wasn't long before their high spirits returned and pushed them all the way down

"You had to be really tough at that time. Think alone of the slope preparation. When we got a high starting number, we nearly vanished in the trenches that reached up to our ears, especially when the snow was light," said Bartl about the old days. He'd had his racing debut at the age of nine in Neukirchen. School class I. Wearing the last starting number, he jetted past the rest to land in second place. Trenches, of course. Eyes shut and go for it. A gifted skier plagued by injuries ascent in the national squad, Austrian Downhill Champion at the age of 15.

Streitberger, European Junior Champion. More parallels included. "The Schorschi was an exceptional skier from the beginning and, like me, he had bad luck with injuries. But he is a 'comeback guy'. I want him to win!" says Bartl about his successor. Ideally, it should happen at the Beaver Creek championshipin early January. "That is Schorschi’s mountain. As Lake Placid would have been mine."Bartl has his reasons for wanting Georg to win the title in the Downhill or Super G discipline. "Then it would come to a World Championship rematch at Zwölfer. "The World Cup will come back to the Glemm valley just one week after the World Championships, specifically on 21st and 22nd February. With two speed races on the legendary World Championship descent of 1991. Georg as brand-new World champion in his home valley. That would be a bull’s eye.

Just nine hundredths of a second behind a certain Ingemar Stenmark, who was the same age as theBascht. It still smarts a little to this day. Especially because only a few days later the Swede started his legendary triumphal march past the big guys in the World Cup scene. The silent racer from the north collected 86 victories. It would have been sweet to come out ahead of him. Damned nine hundredths But even the boldest adventurers get caught one day. Torn ligaments followed victories and dulled the will to go after more. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and return to the battle. As reward for perseverance, the World Cup victory in Heavenly Valley, 1977. In the previous century. With help from the legendary trainer Charly Kahr, who put Bartl back on the speed track.

"We put all wheels in motion to finally get these races," said the skiers' president. He is already rubbing his hands together at the thought of a bunch of edgy "wild dogs" descending on his valley during carnival week.

With the Olympic downhill in sight, the Bascht suffered the next body blow. Knee broken. Even the best ointment could not help this time. "That would have been my race. Technically demanding and speedy," said Gensbichler, a little wistfully. He could almost touch the golden laurel wreath. The end of a career instead. The beginning of a new life. Owner of a skiing school, founder of the infamous band "Skilehrermusi", which went as far as China for a gig. For the past four years, he has been the boss of the Salzburg National Skiing Association. Always searching for more risk-takers from the Salzburg mountains. He's had his eyes on one for years. PIONEERS ALWAYS LEAD THE WAY. For a long, long time Saalbach Hinterglemm has been a visionary trailblazer of the mountain lifts. In addition to technological developments, our environmental pioneers have concerned themselves with the careful and sustainable handling of Mother Nature. "Always go with, not against Nature" is the ruling principle. The reservoirs used in the production of artificial snow ensure snow for the skiing season and help to preserve the alpine country. The meadows are a lovely shade of green in the springtime. The slow melting of the ecologically friendly artificial snow provides longer protection for the green surfaces.

ALPINE HOTSPOTS. 4 SELFIES. These moments. Yes, absolutely worth freezing them. More and more selfies do the rounds via "www.like". As unforgettable memories, they enliven a holiday or winteralbum on Facebook & Instagram.

Since 2000 the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn has invested more than 390 million euro to make the skiing region more ecological, modern and convenient.

HIKING IN THE WINTER TIME. A FUN THING. Back to the roots. A recent trend with a rapidly growing number of followers. Winter sports – like skiing and snowshoe hiking – do not remain unaffected by these tendencies. Discovering nature on your own is a new and rewarding adventure. Our inner hunter is becoming active again. Let’s go hunting on snowshoes. To collect a mixed bag of experiences.

snow-cushioned silence. Simply marvelous! If you can manage to advance quietly on your snowshoes, you might see a deer or two. In the deep forest, far from the beaten track. Continue your way along a forested passage. The reward will be a snow-covered meadow. A snow-covered cottage in the rays of the setting sun adds an almost kitschy accent to the magical scenery.

THE EVA,SNOWSHOE HIKING TOUR IS A WINTERLY MECCA FOR NATURE LOVERS.

So much beauty deserves physical effort. The last rise waits ahead. Just a few steps more and you'll be at the finish line of all human and civilized yearning.

We start off in the district of Lengau. Directly over the city limits of Hinterglemm. Here at the end of the valley, a breathtaking natural spectacle reveals itself. Far away from the beloved high tech gondolas of the skicircus, silence & nature are in perfect harmony. A hot tip for cross-country skiers, too.

Let’s go. The Lindlingalm at the end of the valley is within our grasp. Breathe deeply. Before stopping for a bite, we should check out the unusual wooden constructions at Baumzipfelweg.

Start exploring nature alongside a fairly level cross-country ski run. The sight of nature steeped in deep snow warms your heart, despite the hibernal temperatures. Pause for a while and take in the

And then? Eating, drinking, chatting. The simple way to enjoy life.

BACK TO THE ROOTS. TIPP: You are welcome to join guided snowshoe tours every Saturday.
