Setting the standard for education in the north of England 2
Hymers College
Headmaster’s welcome Welcome to Hymers College. Set in our beautiful grounds in Hull, Hymers has a proud history of delivering exceptional teaching, offering first-rate facilities and supporting all pupils to achieve their potential. For over 125 years we have nurtured all our pupils, from the Junior School right through to Sixth Form, to ensure they receive an outstanding education within an environment that is both warm and supportive and also challenging and stimulating. This has been particularly evident throughout the pandemic. I am incredibly proud of the
overwhelmingly positive feedback we have received from parents and students on our successful delivery of lockdown learning. From day one we were able to deliver a full timetable of online learning with live teaching to all our pupils. Here at Hymers, for our pupils, this academic year is not about catching up, it is about moving forward. At Hymers we continue to give young people the very best start in life and set the standard for education in the north of England. I look forward to welcoming you to the Hymers family. We set your child up for life From a youngster in the Junior School through to our Sixth Form, we create an environment where young people can grow, explore, discover and flourish. We inspire a sense of belonging and ignite a passion to learn. Our characteristically high standards and expectations create a culture where young people are empowered to excel. This is demonstrated by our consistent outstanding results across all academic disciplines and high uptake of the wide variety of co-curricular activities we offer. Our inclusive culture is one where it is respected to succeed, whatever the endeavour. Mistakes are not viewed as failures, but as learning opportunities. We support pupils to fulfil their aspirations within the curriculum and through co-curricular activities, developing well-rounded, grounded young adults who contribute positively to society. Why choose Hymers? 10
Hymers College
How do our results compare to other schools?
What facilities do we offer?
What subjects does the curriculum cover?
Hymers is well known for delivering outstanding academic results year on year.
Situated just a mile from the centre of Hull, our grounds cover 45 acres of land. Within our first-class campus, we have a specialist Art and Design Centre, ICT Centre, Theatre, state-of-the-art Music School with individual music lesson rooms, recently refurbished science laboratories, lecture rooms and an award-winning Learning Resource Centre.
Our curriculum is designed to prepare your child for life beyond school. It gives a comprehensive grounding in key subject areas such as English, Mathematics and Science as well as the opportunity to discover Humanities, Sports, Music, Creative Arts, Technology and Modern Foreign Languages.
Our results at GCSE and A Level show that we are one of the highest achieving schools in the North of England and we have consistently remained at the top of Hull and East Riding’s league table. Most of our pupils choose to progress to higher education, almost always to their first choice university. We also have strong success rates in entrance to medical schools and universities with a competitive entry, such as Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and the London universities.
We also offer a sports hall, gym, swimming pool, newlyresurfaced tennis courts and astro pitch. Our beautiful and historic heritage, combined with our modern facilities, gives our pupils access to a unique educational experience. The theatre, music and sports facilities are utilised by the whole school.
Our curriculum also helps develop key learning skills, such as resourcefulness, resilience, reflectiveness and team work. As your child progresses through school, they will begin to specialise more in subjects of particular interest or ability, having their own choices at GCSE and A Level. For information about the curriculum in the Junior School see page 32, Senior School see page 42 and Sixth Form see page 52.
“The fantastic facilities at the school are superb and co-curricular opportunities are key strengths of a Hymers education. Hymers gave me every opportunity to be the best student I could be.” Ben Partridge, Old Hymerian Hymers College

What support will your child receive?
How do we communicate with parents?
How do pupils get to and from school?
We are sincere in our commitment to inclusivity and care deeply about the physical, mental and emotional well-being of our pupils.
We recognise the importance of communication between teachers and parents when it comes to tracking pupils’ progress. A formal system is in place which includes termly grade cards, academic reports and regular parents’ evenings. We also have an online parent portal found on our website.
Both the Junior and Senior School have areas to lock up bikes if pupils wish to cycle into School. Pupils can also be dropped off and picked up by car at both schools in designated areas.
Our pastoral care network across all year groups allows for individual care and personal attention. As well as supporting pupils through potentially difficult times, our pastoral support includes celebrating them through their triumphs, joys and victories. Children are made to feel secure in confiding with their Form Tutors, Heads of Year, our Head of Pastoral Care, Prefects, School Nurse and dedicated Welfare Nurse, and have access to a visiting professional Counsellor. In the Senior School, our buddy system gives younger pupils a Sixth Form student to support and guide them. Personal, Social and Health Education lessons also encourage pupils to discuss topics that may affect them.
On a more informal basis we encourage parents to contact individual members of staff if they have any concerns regarding their child’s happiness and development.
We also offer an extensive bus service to bring Junior and Senior School pupils to and from School with two buses coming from the South Bank and a number of buses servicing the School from across Hull and the East Riding.
How can you be involved as a parent?
What if a pupil becomes unwell?
Our community is extended to parents as well as pupils. The Hymers College Association (HCA) allows parents to support the school through organising events such as our Garden Party, comedy evenings, Michaelmas Fair and many more.
We have a full-time, highly qualified nursing team in our first aid room here at Hymers. This is located next to the dining hall and is accessible for all our pupils should they feel unwell or want to talk to our nursing staff. Hymers College

The School Day Junior School:
Senior School and Sixth Form:
Pupils can arrive in school from 8:00am and will be supervised by teachers and support staff until registration at 8:45am.
For early risers there are a number of activities, such as swimming, available at the school before registration at 8:45am. Pupils can be dropped off at school from 8:00am and make use of our Learning Resource Centre, including the library and also get a bite to eat before lessons start.
Every pupil has their own form room where they go for registration with coat peg and a place to leave their bag. Lessons which are not held in specialised rooms are also held in these form rooms with teachers coming to the pupils. Hymers College Junior School has a long lunch break from 12:10pm to 13:25pm to allow children to take part in all the different clubs and activities on offer. At lunchtime, pupils have an earlier sitting in the dining hall to the Senior School and eat either a hot meal or their own packed lunch. The School day ends at 3:40pm but children can continue to remain at the School until 5:30pm taking part in a supervised homework club or other after school activities. Regular assemblies in the Hall focus on different aspects of the Junior School CARE Code. On Fridays, we have an uplifting Commendation Assembly, in which we celebrate kindness, effort, achievement and much more. 14
Hymers College
In the Senior School we have a long lunch break from 12:35pm to 13:50pm to allow pupils to take part in the many clubs and activities we run as well as having time for lunch either in our dining hall, from our café, deli counter or bring your own packed lunch. Lessons finish at 4:00pm and again, more clubs and activities swing into action after the end of School. The Learning Resources Centre also stays open until 5:30pm and pupils are welcome to stay until then at no extra charge. We gather twice a week for school assembly, which gives us the chance to celebrate each other’s many successes. We hear from visiting speakers, staff and pupils, providing opportunities to engage with different cultures and promoting positive attitudes towards other people.

Education isn’t confined to the classroom From the Duke of Edinburgh Award, National Citizen Service, CatZero and Young Enterprise, to esports Club, Myths and Legends Club and photography workshops, our range of extra-curricular activities are not only fun, but complete a well-rounded education. Across the school we run over 80 clubs and all our pupils are encouraged to take part in co-curricular activities. We support this by ensuring the timings of the most popular clubs do not clash. This means that pupils are able to participate in varied activities without the requirement to specialise at too young an age.

Pupils looking to explore their enthusiasm for certain key subjects can compete in national academic competitions such as: Science Olympiads, Maths Challenges, Cambridge and Oxford School Debating Competitions and Cryptography, to name but a few. These provide further learning opportunities and healthy competition with other schools around the country. For Junior School through to Sixth Form we also organise a wide variety of educational visits, both in the UK and abroad. These help pupils to become more independent and acquire a lifelong appetite for discovery and adventure.

Inspiring the next generation of creative thinkers In both the Junior and Senior Schools we are proud of the facilities and passionate teaching we are able to offer our pupils in creative subjects. Design and Technology brings a practical and creative edge to our curriculum, inspiring innovation, critical thinking and problem solving. In both our Junior and Senior Schools we have dedicated Design and Technology workshops. Here pupils learn and develop their designing and making skills through a wide range of traditional and modern methods of manufacturing as well as involvement in national design competitions and real-life challenges.
Co-curricular clubs such as the recycling club, the Vex robotic club and the Greenpower race continue to capture the imagination of students of all ages and provide lots of opportunities for them to explore the world of engineering. Students in Greenpower work hard to maintain and develop the car throughout the year and participate in competitive racing events around the country.
In the Junior School we have a specialist art room on the 1st floor and in the Senior School the Art department is situated on the top floor of the Art and Design Centre where all aspects of Fine Art practice can be accessed by students. Student learning is rooted in projects led by teacher demonstrations, designed to stimulate practical and intellectual development. Familiarity with traditional and digital skills is encouraged at all levels.
We are particularly proud of our older students who excel in design or engineering and their continued success in achieving a place on the prestigious Arkwright Scholarship each year. Hymers College

Music to your ears With a dedicated music room and outstanding teaching we are proud of the opportunities we are able to offer all our pupils in the Junior School to explore their musical talents. From singing in our award-winning non-auditioned choirs through to a string group, wind band, percussion group, recorder ensemble and orchestra there is plenty on offer for our younger pupils. The Stephen Martin Music School was built in 2014 to provide first-class music facilities to pupils of all ages. These facilities consist of music technology and teaching classrooms, a state-ofthe-art chamber concert room with ceiling microphones that link to our recording studio and percussion suite. We also provide seven individual teaching/practice rooms and appropriate storage facilities for students’ instruments. There are a large range of ensembles including choirs, chamber groups, wind bands, brass groups, orchestras and rock bands, and we encourage pupils to take part in all these extra-curricular music activities. Frequent concerts in school and performances out of school enable students to showcase their talents. We have 12 visiting teachers delivering over 400 lessons a week on strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, guitar, piano and voice. We also offer additional classes in theory and aural preparation to help students progress through the ABRSM examinations, which are held for a week each term in school. 20

All our children in the Junior School have regular drama lessons and the opportunity to perform in a whole year group production.
In our Senior School encouraging our students to embrace their creativity and individuality is made possible with our outstanding drama department. Whether or not they choose to study drama at GCSE or A Level, every pupil has the opportunity to get involved with productions, be it as a performer, stage crew member or part of the technical team.
There’s also a full programme of theatre visits each year, which enables students of all ages to experience drama productions outside of school. We are very proud that two of our recent Head Boys have gone on to drama school since leaving Hymers.

Giving back to the community Making sure we stay grounded and appreciate our local surroundings is one of our founding principles here at Hymers. Our pupils are encouraged to give something back to the local community through a range of activities outside of the school gates. All year groups work together on projects to raise money for local, UK and worldwide charities. Annually, we give Christmas parcels to vulnerable children and adults, organise a range of sporting and musical events such as our annual charity carol concert, and even completed a charity skydive. We are the only independent school in the country to be a training provider for the National Citizen Scheme (NCS). This scheme, aimed at students aged 15 to 17 from all over the local area, includes a residential outward bound trip and a substantial social action project which benefits the local community. Participating students develop life and work skills and meet some amazing people on their three-week journey. Hymers College

Performing Arts Music is highly regarded in the Junior School with pupils encouraged to take up an instrument and access one of the many ensembles including orchestra, wind band, string group and percussion group. There are regular concerts and performance opportunities, encouraging children to gain in confidence. The school has achieved national recognition for choral singing, having won the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition at the Royal Festival Hall, London, achieving second place at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod and Runners Up at the BBC Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year. A high proportion of the children in the school sing in one of the un-auditioned year group choirs and have ample opportunities to sing in the local community as well as to go on tour to Edinburgh. All children have regular drama lessons and have an opportunity to perform in a whole year group production. This fully inclusive approach aims to build self-esteem for all. Past productions include ‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’, ‘Mystery at Magpie Manor’, ‘The Lion King Jnr’, ‘Peter Pan’ and ‘Hoodwinked’. 34

Field trips & celebrations We believe it is important for our younger pupils to have the freedom to learn outside the classroom. We run a comprehensive series of activities and trips throughout the year ranging from Science day trips, to a cultural trip to Normandy and an outward bound activity week in the Lake District. We host a programme of in-school themed days and weeks, which encourages pupils to immerse themselves in a particular topic and to work collaboratively with each other. During our themed weeks, pupils are empowered to decide for themselves what they wish to concentrate on, culminating in a presentation or exhibition at the end of the week which is shared with parents and the rest of Hymers College. Our Junior School celebrates achievements in weekly Commendation Assemblies and with its own Speech Day which is held at the end of the academic year.

The provision of sport in the Junior School caters for all ability ranges with the principle aim being to improve the children’s skills from whatever starting point in an enjoyable and inclusive way, boosting confidence and independence, whilst still achieving high performance. We have enjoyed plenty of recent successes. Our U11 boys have won the ISFA Boys’ Regional Football
Championship in 2018 and 2019, qualifying for the Nationals at England’s training base at St George’s Park. They have also finished 1st and 2nd in the Hull Schools 5-a-side tournament in 2020 and are current North East HMC Champions.
in the National Finals of the ‘The Great Big Dance Off’ in Oxford. In 2019, our U10 and U11 boys rugby teams had an incredible experience of playing at the home of rugby, Twickenham, in a national rugby festival, before watching Fiji v Barbarians.
Our Athletics teams have had plenty of success at the HMC North East competition at Gateshead Stadium, finishing 2nd overall in 2019 with both the boys’ and girls’ teams respectively finishing 3rd overall. Our U11 swimmers have qualified for ESSA National Finals at Ponds Forge for the past eleven years and, in 2018, our dance group finished third
Our U10 boys and girls get the chance to go on a one day sports tour to Newcastle before they move into Year 6, when the rugby, hockey and netball teams have the opportunity to travel to Worcester for a three day sports tour. We believe offering children experiences such as these will help to nurture and develop a lifelong love of playing sport.

Once a Hymerian, always a Hymerian An education at Hymers is one for life
Once your child’s education at Hymers comes to an end, their links to the school last throughout their lifetime. The Old Hymerians Association exists to promote and encourage former pupils to maintain contact with both their former classmates and to introduce them to nearly 6,500 Old Hymerians. We have members working in almost every sector throughout the country and in every corner of the world. These connections are invaluable and Old Hymerians feel a loyalty to both their school and fellow members alike. It has been humbling to see the recent support and knowledge shared from our alumni towards our current student body in recent years. We have had a number of alumni return to school virtually and in person to deliver our school assemblies and support our Sixth Form including Law, Medical, Biology, Engineering and Language and Culture societies.

It has been a great honour in my role to reconnect so many alumni to the school in so many ways and whilst your education with Hymers came to an end your relationship with the school will always continue.” Emily Pennack OHA President

The John Hymers Bursary Fund In keeping with the founding principles of Hymers, we are proud to be able to offer a generous Bursary Fund (also known as a Fee Remission Scheme) to enable children to attend Hymers when parents are unable to pay the full fees. Under the Scheme, financial help up to the full value of tuition fees may be available, dependent upon the child’s academic ability and an assessment of the income and assets of the family. As a guide, if family income is below circa £61,500 per year, you may be eligible for some assistance. If family income is below circa £19,500 per year, you may not need to pay any tuition fees. Examples of income for assessment purposes include (but are not limited to) pay from employment, net profit from self-employment, benefits and pensions received. Bursaries are given at the discretion of the Governors and all fee assistance is reassessed on an annual basis. The Director of Finance will be happy to give confidential advice to existing or prospective parents about their eligibility under the scheme. The Finance team can be contacted on: 01482 470224. Entry to Senior School Hymers Junior School pupils transition to our Senior School without the need for an Assessment Day.
Assessment Day Candidates sit written examinations in English and Mathematics. Prior to the formal examination they are invited into school for a morning and are tested in Numeracy, Vocabulary and Reasoning using a computer-based test. They also sit a Dyslexia screening assessment to help decide whether they need extra time for the written English and Mathematics Papers. Entrants to all year groups will have an interview with the Headmaster, Mr Stanley.
