“We are so proud of the efforts of all our Year 13 students. It is wonderful to see them rewarded for their hard work – these results are well-deserved for the pupils and for the excellent staff team at Hymers. Exam success is, of course, just a small part of all that our Year 13 pupils have achieved whilst here at Hymers. From captains of first team sports teams to soaring musical performances, these young people have achieved so much during their time here.
I wish all our students the very best as they journey out beyond Hymers and embark on a new adventure. I am so proud of them all and look forward to seeing what this year group go on to achieve.”
Justin Stanley, HeadmasterMo joined Hymers in Year 10, just in time for GCSEs, after living abroad for two years.
Mo achieved two A*s in Biology and Chemistry plus two As in Maths and French. He is now heading to Girton College, Cambridge to study Medicine. He says he chose Girton College as it has a heated swimming pool!
Above all else, Mo enjoyed playing football at Hymers.
Mo joined Hymers from abroad and says that all his successes can be dedicated to the School. There is an incredible sense of spirit within Hymers and a good community is fostered amongst the pupils. There is lots of motivation and encouragement from all staff and a good community spirit is fostered at Hymers. He will miss seeing his friends every day. He says there was never a day at Hymers that he was not smiling!
Charlotte joined Hymers in Year 4 from Welton Primary School.
Charlotte gained three A grades in German, History and Maths plus an A* for her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). She now plans to study History and German at Warwick University.
Her EPQ focussed on medieval queens and the extent of power they held during the 12th and 13th centuries, specifically Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of Henry II and Isabella of France who overthrew her husband!
Charlotte says Hymers was instrumental in her love of hockey, playing in the school team making many friends in the process. She also enjoyed returning for the pre-season training to help coach Years 7 and 8. She also enjoyed playing netball and was involved in the Language and Culture Society.
Charlotte became Head of Holderness House in Year 13 where she helped run the House Quizes, Sports Day and the Swimming Gala.
Her advice for future students is “Get stuck into all the activities that Hymers offers!”
Finn joined Hymers Junior School in Year 4 from Froebel House School. He achieved three A* grades in Economics, Business and PE and after deciding to turn down an offer to study finance at Edinburgh University he is now heading to London to work as a Financial Markets Apprentice at Standard Chartered Bank.
Finn enjoyed being involved in many sports during his time at Hymers, highlights being first team boys’ hockey captain as well as playing first team cricket and football.
Away from sports, Finn enjoyed being a part of the Economics Club in Sixth Form as well as undertaking the LIBF personal finance course in Year 12. He would highly recommend the course to anyone joining Sixth Form irrespective of what subjects studied.
Finn’s says a stand-out moment for him would be the 2023 multi-sports tour to South Africa, citing that it was an amazing end to his time at Hymers. Playing great matches whilst experiencing the culture of another country, all whilst doing it with friends who I have been with right the way through school!
Finn’s advice to future students would be to “Get involved in any co-curricular clubs; there’s plenty on offer so you’ll definitely find one you really enjoy!”
Ruby joined Hymers College in Year 12 for Sixth Form from Newland School for Girls.
She achieved A grades in Classical Civilisation and History, a B grade in Maths and an A* grade for her EPQ. Her EPQ project focussed on ‘How morality laws have changed over time’ leading naturally into her subject choice of Law at the University of Leeds.
Part of her decision to choose Hymers for Sixth Form was based on the amount of co-curricular activities on offer. She enjoyed being part of the Law Society and also helping with the Classics Department’s seminar on International Womens Day.
Ruby’s advice is “You are in a great place to learn, so enjoy it while it lasts.”
Artin joined Hymers in Year 8 in 2017. Previously he had been schooled in India.
He gained B grades in Physics and Economics and a C grade in Maths. He has secured an apprenticeship with Microsoft and will be heading to London to be a Cloud Solutions Architect in November.
Artin enjoyed all sports here at Hymers, mostly football and is proud have been the first cohort to compete in first XI football matches for the school for many decades.
His advice for new students is to use all the facilities available. He says he should have made the most of the music and drama opportunities as there have been some wonderful productions.
Laura joined Hymers in Year 4 from Welton Primary School.
She gained an A* grade in Physical Education and A grades in both Economics and Geography. She is now heading to Sheffield University to study Geography.
Laura has loved her time at Hymers becoming a Senior Prefect in Year 13 and also being captain of netball.
Laura’s advice is to make the most of every opportunity.
Joel joined Hymers in Year 7 from Paisley Primary School in Hull. He achieved A* grade in Chemistry plus A grades in Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry. In addition, Joel also gained a B grade for his EPQ. The subject for his EPQ study has helped shape his goal for the future basing his project on stem cells and how they could be used in research, specifically in regeneration of cells in the treatment of cancer. He is now heading to University of Manchester to study Biochemistry.
Most of the co-curricular activities Joel enjoyed at Hymers were the academic clubs: chemistry and physics where he was encouraged to enter the chemistry, physics and maths Olympiads with a great deal of success.
A highlight of the syllabus was the Year 12 Biology trip to Cranedale and his advice to future students would be to “Try whatever would be your style!”
Among an outstanding set of results, more than half of students achieved at least seven GCSEs graded 9-7, an equivalent to an A* under the old grading system. Indeed, some subjects produced particularly strong results including English (both Language and Literature), French, Latin and the Humanities. In the separate sciences more than 30% of all grades awarded were at the top level of grade 9. Thirteen top-performing students achieved all grades 9 or 8, while three students got no less than 10 grade 9s.
“This is a fantastic set of results for our GCSE students; I am very proud of them all. With 64% of grades being 9-7, higher than that achieved in 2019 - the last set of pre-pandemic results - the results are exceptional and lay firm foundations for Sixth Form success.”
