Why choose Construction at Loughborough? Our construction courses provide you with the knowledge and skills in technology, management, processes and commerce to succeed in industry. These sponsored courses offer an excellent education for future managers of construction projects. They strongly emphasise personal and professional skills, making our graduates very attractive to employers. Industry focus Our unique courses were created in response to specific requests from industry to fill crucial roles in the sector. Our links with industry are strong, with regular lectures from senior industry staff and input into course content. Many of our alumni now hold senior positions in the companies that sponsor our students and provide placement and graduate opportunities. Placement year The industrial placement year is an integral part of these courses, providing practical experience in applying what has been learnt at University into real world situations. The Loughborough Construction Consortium provides a core of sponsoring organisations that offer excellent placement and sponsorship opportunities, supplemented by extensive collaborating organisations across the wider construction sector. The year in industry can provide many benefits. Placement students earn a salary, typically over £16,500 per annum, and many are offered a permanent job with their host company when they graduate. Our students gain an additional award, a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS) alongside their degree qualification. Professional accreditation Both of our construction courses are accredited. Construction Engineering Management is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying is accredited by both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES). Career prospects 100% of our graduates were in employment or further study within six months of graduating, with 98% of those serving in managerial, professional or graduate level roles (DLHE 2016/17 graduates). The average starting salary of our graduates is £29,000 (DLHE 2016/17).

This is a multidisciplinary, broad-based construction course with a focus on the technical and management aspects of construction projects. This accredited course is sponsored by The Loughborough Construction Consortium. These companies offer sponsorship, work placements and graduate jobs for students, and enable practical experience in the form of site visits and guest speakers. Year 1 Areas studied include professional practice and skills, construction technology (buildings), introduction to materials, structure and construction, legal and economic context of construction, site surveying and measurement. Year 2 Areas studied include construction project delivery, construction technology (infrastructure), mechanical and electrical services, construction law and contract administration, sustainable building design and planning, estimating and cost control. Placement year Compulsory industrial placement (leading to DIS*). Final year Areas studied include management of people, projects and organisations, teamwork and leadership, advanced construction, advanced estimating and planning, maintenance, repair and refurbishment, project definition and optimisation, and a research dissertation. Optional topics include BIM and collaborative design management, construction contracts and a sustainable design project. Graduate destinations The course prepares students for a range of potential paths in the construction industry including estimating, planning, site engineering and project management, leading to a career in construction management. This accredited course specialises in the contractual and financial aspects of managing construction projects. Students develop detailed knowledge of building and engineering contract law and construction project procedures, and gain understanding of commercial issues such as risk and cost management. The course is sponsored by the Loughborough Construction Consortium: a network of construction companies that offer sponsorship, work placements and graduate employability. Year 1 Areas studied include professional practice and skills, construction technologies associated with buildings, introduction to materials, structure and construction, legal and economic context of construction, measurement and site surveying. Year 2 Areas studied include construction technologies associated with infrastructure, mechanical and electrical services, construction law and contract administration, planning, estimating, cost monitoring and control, management of finance and risk, and the measurement of complex structures. Placement year Compulsory industrial placement (leading to DIS*). Final year Areas studied include strategic commercial management, management of people, projects and organisations, project definition and optimisation, advanced estimating and planning and construction contracts. Graduate destinations This course educates graduates to work with equal ease in any aspect of the quantity surveying profession; in consultancy offices, construction companies, central or local government, or property departments of major companies.
