“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” -Oscar Wilde
By Bernita McTernan,. Executive Vice President Sponsorship, Mission Integration, and Philanthropy
We all instinctively know how much a kind word or gesture can mean to us in our own lives, and we’ve seen how it can be a powerful source of healing for the patients we serve. So it’s fitting that this February, in that same spirit of kindness, Dignity Health is celebrating American Heart Month by creating a one-of-a-kind, interactive musical composition to symbolize the connections that tie us all together. It’s called the Heartbeat Symphony. Our very own employees contributed recordings of their heartbeats to this effort, and creative composer Miles Kennedy then assigned them to various instruments. The result is a wonderful piece of music. Now, we want the entire Dignity Health community to join in the chorus. So I’m inviting you to visit www.heartbeatsymphony.org where you’ll be able to use some fun new
technology to read your pulse and add your own unique movement to the original score. You could be anything from a piano to a violin. I hope you’ll log on and give it a look, and a listen. You can also watch this behind the scenes video to see how it all came together. The more beats that join, the more this masterpiece will grow. And I can think of no better treat to send your loved ones on Valentine’s Day than the sound of your heart. With the Heartbeat Symphony, Dignity Health is harnessing the power of the pulse that every human being shares. By combining them into music, we can form a new type of connection with one another, and marvel at the new harmonies we are bound to discover together. Have a happy and heart-healthy February!

Living Spirituality By Sister Lucille Carreau, DHS Spiritual Services Supervisor
THOUGHT FROM POPE FRANCIS:
When you do something good, almost instinctively born in us is the desire to be respected and admired for this good deed, to obtain a satisfaction. Jesus invites us to do these works without any ostentation, and to trust only in the reward of the Father ‘who sees in secret’ (Mt 6,4.6.18).

ACTION:

UC Merced Sorority spreads Valentine cheer throughout Mercy
Extending “Happy Valentine’s Day” wishes, were 12 UC Merced students from the Sigma Theta PSI Multicultural Sorority. They delivered flowers and valentines to all our patients. After visiting all the floors, they ended up with extras and decided to go to the ED waiting room, where they put a rare smile on the faces of those waiting.
